🎭 Example 1

Theme:  Community

Opening:  Good afternoon, esteemed faculty members, parents, families, friends, and fellow graduates. As the valedictorian, it’s an honor to have you all at our graduation ceremony. My name is [Name]. Today marks the end of a chapter in our lives and the beginning of a new one.

Key Idea 1: (Past)  4 years ago, we were just a bunch of freshmen with no clue of what we were doing, trying to find our way through the maze: which classes to sign up for, which extracurriculars to join, which friend group to try to fit into. And then, before we knew it, we were seniors. We had a sense of purpose, trying to leave our mark on this school. We’ve had countless memories, from finals-week jitters to the carefree days of senioritis. And we made it through, and here we are today, ready to take on the world.

As a theater kid, I spent a lot of my time either rehearsing for a play or performing in one. During our first year, I was cast in our school’s production of “Grease.” I was thrilled. I had always wanted to play Sandy, and my dream finally came true. However, on opening night, disaster struck. As I walked onto the stage, I slipped on a piece of confetti. But I didn’t fall flat on my face. No, even worse: I forgot my line. The silence in the auditorium was deafening. My heart was pounding up to my ears. And for a moment, the entire world froze. But then, the person playing Frenchy ad-libbed a line to get us back on track, and the show continued on.

Later, I was talking to my parents about it, and they had no idea that anything had gone wrong.

Key Idea 2: (Present)  Looking back on that moment, I realize that school and even life are filled with moments like that. We all stumble at different points, and we have to be there for each other. School isn’t just about textbooks. It’s about the communities we discover outside of the classroom. This is how we grow into the best versions of ourselves. No matter how long our friends stay in our lives, they permanently shape our worldview. As Oliver Wendell Holmes once said: “One’s mind, once stretched by a new idea, never regains its original dimensions.”

Key Idea 3: (Future)  As for the future, who knows what it holds? But one thing is for sure: we will make the most of it. We have all worked incredibly hard to get to where we are today, and I have no doubt that we will continue to do so in the future. We’ll scatter around the world and become part of different communities. And the world will never regain its original dimensions.

Closing:  So, to everyone here, I urge you to allow yourself to slip on the confetti, forget your lines, and—most importantly—let people be there for you. Learn from your communities, grow with your communities, and maybe even help build one of your own. Congratulations, Class of [Year], and let’s all enjoy today as a once-in-a-lifetime celebration.

🏀 Example 2

Theme:  Perseverance

Opening:  Good afternoon, fellow graduates, esteemed faculty, family, and friends. My name is [Name], and I am honored to welcome you all to this momentous occasion: our graduation. And I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia for the memories we’ve made and a sense of excitement for the future that lies ahead of us.

Key Idea 1: (Past)  In the past four years, we’ve laughed, cried, learned, and grown together. We’ve experienced moments of triumph and moments of defeat.

One of the highlights of my school experience was being a basketball player. From early-morning practices to late-night games, it has taught me some valuable life lessons.

During our junior year, we were in the middle of a crucial game. With only a few minutes left on the clock, I had the ball in my hands, and I was ready to make the game-winning shot. I could hear the cheers and screams of my teammates and fans in the background. But then, out of nowhere, I tripped and fell, losing the ball and my chance to win the game.

I felt defeated and embarrassed. It was such a low point. But Coach [Name] later told me this: “Life is unpredictable, and sometimes, things don’t go as planned. But it’s how we react to those moments that define us. It’s all about perseverance.”

Key Idea 2: (Present)  Today, we’re ready to take on the next chapter of our lives. Today marks the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Today is a day we honor our teachers, administrators, and staff who have guided and supported us throughout our journey. Today represents a significant milestone in our lives and the beginning of a new chapter.

Key Idea 3: (Future)  And in the future, I can’t wait to see where our journeys take us. Some of us will go on to college, others will enter the workforce, and some will serve our country in the military. Someone will become an entrepreneur, artist, or athlete—or all of the above. Whatever path we choose, I’m confident that we can all achieve greatness. And we will undoubtedly have many moments of triumph as well as many moments of defeat. It’s how we react in those moments that will define us. Whatever we do, I hope we never forget the lessons we have learned here at [School name] and continue to grow from our experiences.

Closing:  Thank you to our friends and families for your unwavering support. And to my fellow graduates, I am honored to have shared these four years with you all. Congratulations, Class of [Year]! Let’s make the future bright!

📚 Example 3

Theme:  Appreciate the small moments

Opening:  Good evening, fellow graduates, esteemed faculty, proud parents, and distinguished guests. It’s an honor to stand before you as the valedictorian of our graduating class. My name is [Name]. I’d like to warmly welcome everyone in attendance and express my gratitude for being part of this memorable occasion.

Key Idea 1: (Past)  I’d like to take a moment to reflect on our past experiences. Four years ago, we came into these hallways as timid freshmen, unsure what the next four years would bring. We stumbled through our first day of school, struggling to find the paths to our classes. But soon enough, we found our way and began to thrive.

One of my fondest memories is when I was a sophomore and sat down in a classroom for a final exam. I sat down, confident in how well I prepared, only to realize I knew nothing about what was on the exam sheet. After frantically flipping through my notes, I looked up to see the wrong teacher staring at me from the front of the room. Then I looked around and realized I was surrounded by seniors! I had walked into the wrong classroom. It was a humbling experience, to say the least. And it was a small moment, but it’s one that I’ll never forget.

Key Idea 2: (Present)  Looking back, I realize now that it’s not just the academic achievements that make our time here so special. It’s these small moments, the laughter shared with our friends, the support of our teachers, and the sense of community that make this an unforgettable experience.

Today is a day we’ll remember for years to come. We’re filled with excitement, anticipation, and a tremendous sense of accomplishment. It’s a day that marks the end of one chapter in our lives and the beginning of a new one, a day where we celebrate the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Today, we’ve come together as a [School mascot] community, ready to take on the world with confidence and determination. It is a day that reminds us of the limitless potential we hold within ourselves and the boundless opportunities that lie ahead.

Key Idea 3: (Future)  As we stand on the cusp of our future, the world is our oyster. We have been given the tools to succeed, and now it is up to us to utilize them to the best of our ability.

We’re moving forward into the next phase of our lives, and we can’t forget the values and lessons we have learned during our time here. The friendships we’ve made, the teachers who’ve guided us, and the experiences that have shaped us—these will always be a part of us.

Closing:  So, to my fellow graduates and everyone who has come here to support us, let us celebrate our accomplishments, cherish the small moments, and look forward to a bright future. Thank you, and congratulations to the graduating class of [Year].

Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) Election Speeches: Tips and Ideas

Are you ready to take the leap and become your troop’s next SPL? If you’re up for the responsibility and running in your troop’s next senior patrol leader election, an epic speech may just be your ticket to victory ! In this article, I’m going to be sharing with you the most powerful tricks I’ve learned on how to deliver a memorable speech and crush your upcoming SPL election.

What should a SPL speech include? An ideal SPL speech will be around 2-4 minutes long and describe your experience in the troop, as well as your plans for the future. By speaking clearly, explaining why you’re uniquely qualified to become the next SPL, and humorously inspiring your troop, you’ll have a great shot at pulling ahead of the competition.

As around 25% of most SPL election’s votes go to the scout with the strongest message, your speech is still incredibly important . While a great speech won’t automatically win you the election, a poor speech might just be the reason why you lose. Now that you know the stakes, don’t worry! After this article, you’ll also know the keys to delivering a killer speech and be ready to crush your upcoming election.

Content of Your SPL Speech

As I mentioned in my article (earlier link) on how to win an SPL election, your speech should be the right mix of inspiring, funny, and actionable. There are 3 main things to keep in mind:

• You’ll want to  paint a great future for the troop  in your vision as SPL.
• You’ll want to  make your fellow scouts laugh  so that they remember you as likable.
• You’ll want  your ideas to be understood as relateable but powerful .

Here’s an example of a funny high school election speech (2:16) that does a lot of things right:

When you’re planning your own SPL speech, I’d suggest focusing more on your message, while still including some of the humor and jokes used by this guy.

How can you put all of this into practice? The first and most important thing to do is decide on your message. Your message is the north star that guides your SPL speech. To find your message, think to yourself, what can I give back to my troop if I’m voted in as SPL?

Choosing Your Message

For some scouts, the answer to this may be creating a more fun atmosphere at troop meetings. Other scouts may want to grow the troop or win more competitions at summer camps. Find your own message of what you can give back to your troop, and build your speech around that central pillar.

Here are some examples of messages that you can frame your speech around:

• Helping scouts earn more merit badges and complete rank requirements during meetings
• Creating more leadership opportunities for scouts to practice valuable skills
• Scheduling more time during camps to have fun and do cool activities
• Organizing troop excursions to new places 
• Planning in-troop competitions that give both younger and older scouts the opportunity to learn new skills

The trick is to honestly ask yourself what you’re able to do that may help the scouts in your troop. Write your message down in a few short sentences once something comes to mind.

Be careful not to include multiple messages in your speech, as this may become confusing to the audience. Instead, spend your time focusing on one key topic. Once you have your message noted down, you’re ready to move on to the next step!

What Makes You Special?

After deciding on a message, the second part of your senior patrol leader speech is YOU. Ask yourself these two questions:

• Why do you want to become your troop’s next SPL? 
• What experiences have you had that will allow you to succeed as a SPL? 

Take the time to quickly write down your answers to these questions. 

In a senior patrol leader speech, you’re basically selling yourself to your troop. That’s why you’ll need to know the answers to these questions about yourself. Your goal is to make each and every scout in the audience certain that if they elect you, you’ll be capable of handling the responsibilities of a SPL.

Make sure that each of your points are concise and easy to understand. Really, each one should be more than 3 sentences long. Once you have these three things figured out: your message, why you want to be SPL, and why you’re qualified to be SPL, you’re ready to begin crafting your election-winning speech!

Scripting Your SPL Speech

No matter how good your speech might be, if you’re reading it off a sheet of paper, no one will take you seriously. By speaking confidently and relying on a few, if any, notes, you demonstrate to your troop that you’re a leader they can trust in and depend on.

While you definitely don’t want to write your speech out word for word, you’ll still want to have a general idea of what you’re going to be saying at all times. This is where notes can come in handy, especially if you haven’t had much practice delivering speeches in the past.

To strike the right balance, I’d recommend you hold a small 3×5 notecard containing your main bullet points during your speech. While you should have the flow of your speech memorized, this small note card will help if you ever need a prompt.

I know that speech writing isn’t easy, so in the section below I’m going to be showing you an example of a full SPL speech, as well as how I would break the speech down into manageable sections for your notes.

“You know what I love? Seeing scouts not earn their Eagle because they’re not given enough troop support in meetings and activities! Just kidding. On a serious note, I see a big issue in this troop with scouts not having enough opportunities to complete their rank requirements or earn their merit badges. If elected as your next SPL, I intend to change that. My name is Cole, I’m a Life Scout who’s been with this troop for five years now, and I know that we can do better. I believe that each and every one of you should earn your Eagle rank, and that it should also be the responsibility of the troop to make that happen.  After leading many successful patrols in the past and recently completing NYLT, I’m now qualified and motivated to lead our troop as your next SPL. I know that if I’m elected, by planning merit badge clinics and scheduling time to work on rank requirements, we’ll not only be able to have more fun activities, we’ll also complete our goals of becoming Eagle Scouts! I want to become your SPL so that we can make this happen. I’ll help the younger scouts learn more and rank up faster, and help the older scouts more easily earn their required badges. Together we can make this change. Are you with me?”

While you can be more creative and humorous in your own speech, remember that your message should be clear and impactful. In my example, my message was that I would use meetings and activities to help scouts complete rank requirements, earn merit badges, and finish their Eagle. Here’s how I’d be scripting my main points:

• You know what I love? (Seeing Scouts not earning badges) Kidding, as SPL I’ll change that.
• Introduce self, troop’s responsibility to help each of you earn your eagles
• Experience: PL, NYLT. As SPL I’ll plan troop meetings and activities to help you rank up and earn badges
• What I’ll do for younger scouts, what I’ll do for older scouts, ask for vote.

While this is what you might write on your notecard, you should also know the main messages behind what you’re saying. Here are the same points as above, this time outlining the messages behind each paragraph.

• Present the issue of scouts not having the opportunity to earn merit badges and rank up
• Introduction, my credentials, and plan as SPL
• More credentials, details of plan, largest benefit of message
• Why I’m running, benefit for younger scouts, benefit for older scouts; ask for their vote.

Delivery of Your SPL Speech

When presenting your SPL speech to your troop, confidence is everything. More than 2/3 of communication is done nonverbally, so you’ll want to be saying that you’d be a great SPL through your body language as well!

The only way to build confident body language is through practice. I’d recommend delivering your speech at least three times before the election. 

• First, practice by yourself in front of a mirror or record yourself on your phone. 
• Second, practice in front of friends or family and ask for their feedback. 
• Third, while trying to use their feedback, practice in front of friends and family one more time.

You’d be surprised by how much of a difference a little bit of practice can make. You don’t want to be the scout that freezes up in the middle of their speech and leaves everyone in the audience super uncomfortable. Instead, practice and you’ll quickly become much more confident.

Here are some other quick tips to keep in mind:

• Make the beginning and end of your speech the strongest parts to grab the audience’s attention
• Speak a bit more loudly than you think you should ( Strong voice )
• Speak a bit more slowly than you think you should (Speak clearly )
• Stand up tall with your shoulders pulled back and keep your hands out of your pockets ( Confident body language )
• Smile and relax, you’ll do great! ( Positive self-talk )

Before it’s your turn to speak, take three deep breaths and then tell yourself, “I’ve got this.” I know it’s nerve-racking to publicly speak, I’ve been there too, but you’re going to be great!

While there’s no secret hack for instantly delivering an amazing speech, there are still ways that you can intelligently prepare. By following these tips, you’ll have a strong chance of presenting the best speech and being elected as your troop’s next SPL!

To recap: First, define your message . Then, script your speech through bullet points . Finally, practice your speech at least 3 times and ask for feedback from friends and family . With just a little bit of preparation, you’ll find yourself miles ahead of the competition!

A tribute takes on so many different meanings, it can be hard to remember what it’s supposed to be. But when you write a tribute speech, you can get to its true purpose, which is to honor a specific person. Usually, you can hear tribute speeches at funerals, memorials, and celebrations -- but all tend to follow a similar formula.

If you’re speaking at a funeral or at a memorial, you might need to write a tribute speech. Or even if you’re speaking at a celebration and simply focusing this piece on a loved one who has died, this guide is for you. 

You want your tribute speech to use the right words and to paint an accurate, admirable picture of the person. A heartfelt speech evokes emotion in the listeners and conveys a clear message.

Step 1: Think About the Person

Step 2: Write an Outline

Before you begin writing, create an outline. Writing an outline helps you organize your thoughts before putting pen to paper. Most tribute speeches follow the same format. Here’s a quick guideline to follow:

• Introduction: Who is the speech about? What is your relation to this person?
• Main point 1: Start off with a key characteristic of the person you’re talking about, such as their caring nature or listening skills.
• Evidence: What evidence do you have that supports your main point? For instance, if they were a caring person, talk about a time they helped others.
• Main point 2: What’s another point you’d like to make about the person?
• Evidence: Again, support your point.
• Conclusion: Repeat your crucial points and end with something meaningful.

Knowing what to say when someone dies is never easy. Using an outline organizes your thoughts in a clear way no matter the purpose of your speech. 

Step 3: Get the Audience’s Attention

The hardest part of a tribute speech is often the introduction. How do you capture the audience’s attention? If your speech is during a funeral, for instance, emotions are already high. If you’re giving a speech at another event or celebration, you similarly need to capture attention. How do you hook listeners with your tribute?

Start by relating to the listeners themselves. You need to appeal to the audience on a personal level to develop a connection with your words. If you’re speaking at a funeral, remind them how the deceased person brought everyone together. Open with your relationship with this person, and talk about your loved one’s role in your life. 

A good way to start is with a personal story. Humans naturally are drawn to stories. Including one at the beginning of your speech brings the audience closer to you. From there, it’s easier to share your main points with the listeners’ full attention. 

Step 4: Make Your Points

It might be tempting to drag out your introduction, especially if you’re using a personal take to capture the audience’s attention. Consider keeping the introduction brief so you can get to your point sooner rather than later. A concisely worded speech makes more of an impact through brevity and pauses than long drawn-out sentences.

With a tribute speech, you might include any of the following:

• The person’s characteristics
• The person’s accomplishments
• The person’s lasting impact
• Your experience with the person

All of these need real-life evidence. Memories, attributes, and physical creations provide plenty of support for what your loved one did in their life, and how they made you feel. How you share these main points is up to you.

Consider how you knew this person personally. Do you have a particularly funny or touching memory that was not shared widely? Did you see a special side of this person? These are all valuable questions to answer when writing a memorial tribute.

Step 5: Finish Strong

Finish your tribute speech on a high note. Popular quotes or poems can provide a way to tie up your speech. Or even ending with a quote or familiar saying from your loved one can leave your audience fondly remembering the person. Wrapping up your tribute speech can also be used to recall your main points and making a final statement about the person. 

You might ask the audience to remember their own favorite memory of this person or to think of them when they visit a certain place. Either way, leave them with something memorable.

Finally, before you present, it’s time to practice. If you’re anxious, use these tips to put you at ease:

• Think of your speech as a performance, not just a reading
• Make eye contact with your audience

The Optimist Club is about bringing out the best in children, and their community; our Scout Oath says “On my honor I will do my best”, and during the Order of the Arrow conference we were told to do our best, to give back, inspire others. By doing simple acts of kindness, serving others, giving back to our community, we show our passions. We can start a movement, a movement of good. By being the example others can follow and the trend will keep moving. We together can change our towns, states, countries, the world. Reach out to another and cheer them on, give them a high five and say “You got this!” Gather together to serve your communities in any capacity. Be a mentor to a youth, be a friend to a senior citizen, clean up a park. This is a challenge I think each and every one of us can accomplish.

HOW TO WRITE A 60TH BIRTHDAY SPEECH

• Gather your content – brainstorm your favourite moments and best stories
• Find a theme – identify a common thread that connects your content
• Prove, don’t tell – it’s not enough to say they’re a great person – how is this true?
• Add humour – don’t lift yours off the internet
• Conclude with the touching bit – think sentimental, not saccharine
• Keep it succinct – stick to 8 minutes max

Okay so, much like the last six decades, let’s take it stage by stage…

1 – GATHER YOUR CONTENT

The key to giving an authentic, heartfelt speech is to keep it personal. Your audience wants to recognise the person you’re talking about, not listen to you reel off platitudes about some generic 60-year-old.

It’s likely you’ve known this person a long time, so you should have plenty of material in your arsenal. Even so, it’s worth doing a bit of extra digging.

Dust off old photo albums and enjoy an afternoon reminiscing. Get in touch with friends and family to ask them about their fondest memories of the person you’re writing about.

2 – FIND A THEME 

Ok, you’ve got your stash of stories, now what are you going to do with them?

Well, you pick the best and bin the rest.

Remember, you don’t need to list everything you’ve ever done. This is not an obituary.

You’re looking for three things:

• The funniest, most entertaining stories
• Stories that make a point (either funny or poignant)
• And a thread that connects them all

Your speech should sound like one flowing narrative rather than simply a collection of anecdotes and thoughts, so that final point is important. 

EXAMPLES OF THEMES 

• Pinpoint the standout characteristics and personality traits of the birthday boy/girl; the ones that everyone in the room will recognise as being truly ‘them’. It could be that they always, somehow, find themselves in bonkers situations. If so, find examples of that happening through the years and use these stories as the foundation for your speech.
• ‘Older, not wiser’ – a classic theme for any ‘big’ birthday speech. Recount the funny tales through the ages. 
• Alternatively, you could talk about the various things you’ve learned from your loved one over your years together – whether it’s how to make a killer risotto or why it’s important to write thank you letters. 

3 – PROVE, DON’T TELL 

Adjectives are easy. And just a bit boring. 99% of people could be described as ‘fun-loving’ and ‘caring’. 

Instead of the obvious, highlight what makes your loved one unique . And then prove their qualities in action to make your description come to life and sound more than just a platitude. 

Are they incredibly fun to be around? Explain why even a trip to Lidl with them turns into an adventure. 

Or if they are very kind-hearted, tell everyone about the time they picked you up at 2am from the train station (when no taxi driver would!) and didn’t even mention it in the morning. 

4 – THE IMPORTANCE OF HUMOUR 

This is a party, not an episode of This Is Your Life. Keep it as light and as entertaining as possible.

Not everyone is a natural crowd pleaser and speaking in public makes most of us nervous. But the beauty of a celebratory speech is that everyone is there to have fun so there’s goodwill from the off.

Don’t rely on dodgy jokes off the internet. Chances are at a 60 th , there are people in the crowd who’ll recognise them as recycled!

In fact, you don’t have to come up with ‘jokes’ at all per se. Just be as real as possible about the star of your story, while maybe exaggerating some of their more interesting quirks.

Look for inconsistencies in their character. Are they quite serious by nature but they’re happy to be given a glamorous ‘makeover’ when the grandchildren come to visit?

Ask yourself what makes them different and think back to seminal moments or eras of their lives. Consider their fashion choices over the decades – were they a mod or rocker? Did they pull off a mullet in the 80s and are now bemused at today’s generation acting like they invented it?

Once you start thinking about it, you’ll realise just how much there is to play with. 

5 – The Touching Tribute… 

A warmed-up audience will respond well to some well-timed sentiment towards the end of your speech. Most of us accept that some affectionate teasing is the best way to pay tribute to someone you love, but it’s also nice to show your softer side with some genuine praise.

By now, the crowd will be running high on nostalgia, so trade on those good feelings and speak honestly about what you truly admire and appreciate about your person. 

Make sure your speech sums up a lifetime of love and creates one of life’s special moments. 

6 – Keep It Snappy 

Of course, you can have too much of a good thing. 

Any celebration speech should be delivered well within ten minutes, even allowing for laughter and any good-natured heckles!

Head Boy and Girl – Leaving speech to the school

This is the transcript of an inspirational speech given by our outgoing head boy and girl to the whole school at the Year 13 leavers’ assembly.

  Stephen: 6 years ago, I was standing up here reading my speech to be House Captain of Ormerod House. Now, in Year 13, I’m here saying my thank you and goodbye speech, which really does make me quite sad, yet excited to move onto new adventures.

The opportunities I have been given at Crompton House have been absolutely phenomenal. I really cannot thank all the staff, governors and students enough for this. To finish my Crompton House journey as Head Boy has been a dream come true; I’m not sure that I would have had these same opportunities anywhere else. It is because Crompton House have so much interest in enriching us to be all rounded individuals that these opportunities arise.

Every day, I walk through the school gates with a feeling that I am cared for, with the presence of a huge sense of community. When I leave this school today, every day for a long time, something will feel missing in my life.

If there’s one thing to take away from what I say, please grasp every opportunity you have while you’re at Crompton House. The ethos and attitudes towards school life are there for a reason, to set us up for the future to be outstanding people. If you feel ‘ordinary’ and there’s not much to school life at the minute, there will be an opportunity to grasp. If you’re always getting into trouble and want a new start, it’s not too late, make that change and feel like you’re becoming a better person. I honestly believe everyone has the potential to do what they want to do, so make it happen.

Lois:  For me, Crompton House has shaped me as a person. I have been given amazing teachers and I have made so many friends, all of whom have influenced me in a positive way.

Seven years have gone by, and I still love this school as much as I did on my first day in Year 7.

Today I will leave the school gates for the last official time; however I leave with more knowledge and more wisdom than what I started with.

Crompton House is almost like a family, and there will be a hole in my heart once I leave. I am so grateful for the teachers who have influenced me to do the best I can, and I am grateful for the many opportunities Crompton House has offered me. Most importantly, I am grateful to have been a part of such an amazing school, which has allowed me to make the best memories over the past 7 years.

Stephen: Coming to Crompton House School and Sixth Form, has been the biggest and best experience of my life so far, one which I will cherish forever and one which I will never forget. Thank you again to everyone here and to those who have now left us for being such a big part of it.

We wish everybody here the very best in the years to come.

Congratulations  

There’s no need to deliver a whole commencement address in your card. “Congratulations” is a great basic message, and it’s easy to say even if you don’t know the graduate well. Here are some ideas for going a word or two beyond to warm up and personalize your congratulations.

More casual

• “Congratulations and BRAVO!”
• “This calls for celebrating! Congratulations!”
• “You did it! Congrats!”
• “Caps off to you, Graduate! Well done!”
• “What a proud day! We just couldn’t be happier for you!”
• “What an impressive achievement!”
• “Happy Graduation Day!”
• “Good looks, brains, heart and now a diploma too? You’ve really got it all! Congrats!”
• “You did the damn thing, Grad! SO proud.”
• “The community, the church, your family and especially your mama could not be prouder of you.”
• “You deserve all KINDS of high fives and hugs! You worked hard and got it done.”
•  “¡Bravo! ¡Felicidades en tu graduación!”

More formal

• “Congratulations on your well-deserved success.”
• “Warmest congratulations on your graduation.”
• “Congratulations on your graduation and best wishes for your next adventure!”

• “Prayers and blessings on your graduation and for your future.”

Helpful tip: If the card you’ve chosen already has “congratulations” printed, follow it with an ellipsis […] and add to the “congratulations” message.

Look to the Future  

Graduation is the perfect time to look ahead, offer encouragement and express optimism and excitement about the graduate’s future. And you don’t even need a crystal ball to do it!

• “Hope you’ll always find yourself as happy and full of big, crazy dreams as you are today!”
• “Hope you’re able to take a well-earned rest, vacation—whatever kind of break sounds like fun. You’ve earned it!
• “You’re going to be a star! Congratulations!”
• “You deserve to see your dreams come true…congrats!”
• “This definitely won’t be the last time I get to brag about you.”
• “I’m so happy for you, even if this does mean you’re an [add school mascot here] for life.”
• “You’ve stepped up on the world stage ready to be a star. Love to see your shine!”
• “¡Lo lograste! Que todos tus sueños siempre se hagan realidad.”
• “I’m sure today will be only the first of many proud, successful moments for you.”
• “Sending warm congratulations today and wishing you all the best at Michigan State in the fall!”
• “Congratulations today and best wishes for all your tomorrows.”
• “I just know life has even more wonderful things in store for you.”
• “Today, the field of education gains a very promising new addition. Congratulations on your graduation and best of luck in your teaching career!”
• “Can’t wait to see where life will take you next. Wherever it is, our prayers go with you!”
• “¡Muchas felicidades! Tu actitud triunfadora te seguirá llevando muy lejos.”

Helpful tip: Let your relationship be your guide if you decide to write a lighthearted message. If humor is part of how you communicate with the graduate in everyday life, then feel free to be your funny self when you sign the card.

Graduation During a Difficult Time  

Graduation is supposed to be a time of joy, but sometimes life has other ideas. Here are some message ideas for when difficult personal, family or broader circumstances make it impossible to celebrate the way you and the graduate would have hoped.

When Commencement Is Canceled

• “Of course, we’re disappointed we won’t get to watch you walk across the stage like we’d always dreamed—but that just means we’re going to celebrate you even bigger as soon as we get the chance!”
• “Even though graduation is going to look different for you, the achievement is still the same. You’ve put in the same hard work. You’ve learned and grown so much. And I couldn’t be prouder.”
• “We’re sorry you’ve had to let go of the graduation ceremony and celebrating you’ve been looking forward to for the past four years. We wish it could have been different, but we want you to know we’re still so proud of you and what you’ve achieved.”
• “It’s going to take more than a canceled graduation ceremony to stop me from blowing an air horn in your honor. Way to go, Grad!”
• “You are still celebrated for this amazing accomplishment.”
• “Aunque por el momento no podemos celebrar tu graduación, celebramos con orgullo tu logro.”

When the Graduate Is Struggling

• “Congratulations on your graduation. I wish it could have happened at a happier time for you, but I hope it helps to know how loved you are and how proud you’ve made all of us who care about you.”
• “You might not feel up to celebrating as you graduate, but we hope you do feel the pride, caring and good wishes surrounding you right now.”
• “This is not how I pictured your graduation going, but you sure are the strong, resilient person I always imagined you’d grow to be. Anytime you don’t feel strong, please know you can lean on me.”
• “As you graduate, you’re in all my proudest and happiest thoughts…and in my most caring, heartfelt prayers, too.”
• “Sé que ahorita estás pasando por un mal momento, pero quiero que sepas que eres una persona que inspira a todos a su alrededor, y que se te desea todo lo mejor en tu graduación y siempre.”

When the Future Feels Uncertain

• “You’re graduating at a tough time, but I believe in my heart that better days are coming. It may take some time, but I hope you can hang in there and keep believing, too.”
• “Someday you’ll look back and think, Wow, I graduated at the strangest time ever… Until then, we’ll be here for you, cheering you on, looking forward to wherever life takes you next, and feeling so proud of you.”
• “Graduation cards are supposed to wish you a bright future, but right now, I’m all for taking things one day at a time. I hope you’re able to do that, too. Especially today, I hope you can just enjoy all the pride and good wishes coming your way.”
• “Praying for you as you graduate—for pride today, hope for tomorrow, and for love and support to go with you always.”
• “Your talent is still your talent. Your hard work is still your hard work. Your dreams are still your dreams. You will help turn the world right side up again. Because you are still that amazing.”
• “Hard work, talent, drive and vision will always outlast tough times. That’s how I know you’re going to make the world what you want it to be.”
• “Recuerda que Dios está contigo hoy que te gradúas y siempre. Él te guiará y te acompañará a cada paso.”

Helpful Tip: It’s okay to be real in the face of hard circumstances. If the real you would say “This sucks,” then write “This sucks.” But don’t leave it at that. Try to take your message in a more hopeful, caring direction from there.

When You Can Be There  

If you’re going to be at the commencement ceremony or a part of the celebration afterwards, you might choose to focus your message on the pride and fun of sharing in the graduate’s big day.

• “Congratulations, Jamal. It means so much to be a part of your graduation day!”
• “WOO-HOO! We’re thrilled to be celebrating your graduation with you!”
• “First I get to see you walk across the stage. Then there’s a party? Awesome!”
• “Your whole village is stomping their feet and shouting your name right now, Kendrick.”
• “¡Qué alegría poder ser parte de tu graduación!”
• “So happy we could be here to watch you graduate with honors. It’s an honor to share in such an important day.”
• “It’s my great privilege to know you…to think about all you’ve achieved…and to be with you on your graduation day.”
• “You’ll always remember this day and so will all of us who were here cheering you on. Best of luck to you always!”
•  “¡Muchas felicidades! Es un privilegio poder acompañarte en tu graduación.”

When You Will Not Make It  

Even when you can’t make it to the commencement ceremony or reception, you can still make your presence felt by letting the graduate know you’re with them in spirit.

• “Congratulations on your high school graduation, Tyler! Wish we could be there to see it.”
• “I wish I could be at your graduation to give you a hug and tell you in person how proud I am of you.”
• “Even though we’ll miss seeing you in your cap and gown, we would never miss this chance to tell you we’re proud of you.”
• “I feel a shout coming on! You can probably hear me from all the way over here. Congrats, Grad!”
• “Sending warm thoughts and big congratulations to a graduate we’re so very proud of.”
• “Thinking of you with love and pride on your graduation day.”
• “Our warmest thoughts and highest hopes are with you as you celebrate your graduation.”
• “Ojalá pudiera estar en tu graduación para decirte en persona que mi corazón está lleno de un orgullo inmenso por ti.”

Writing tip: When you can’t be there in person, you don’t have to include an apology in your personal message. Just the act of sending the card lets the graduate know you’re thinking of him or her.

Give Advice  

Graduation is a good time for the kind of advice that’s more about building people up than bossing them around. Keep your advice general, upbeat and encouraging, and it will be appreciated.

• “Always remember: There’s no limit to what you can do if you keep believing in yourself.”
• “Take pictures. Take your time celebrating. Take it easy for a while. Then get ready to take on the world!”
• “It took a lot of hard work to reach this goal. You had to show up every day, whether you felt like it or not. I hope you feel great about what you’ve accomplished, and I hope you’ll continue to be a person who shows up day in and day out for those things that are worthwhile and important in life.”
• “Graduation is like a bridge to the next part of your life, and everything that got you here—hard work, drive and confidence—is going to carry you across to the future you deserve.”
• “Para alguien como tú ningún sueño es imposible de cumplir. Eres muy especial y tu determinación te llevará muy lejos.”
• “May you always dare to do great things with your life.”
• “Keep on growing. Keep adding to the goodness and beauty in the world. Keep developing those unique dreams and talents that make you who you are!”
• “At my graduation, our commencement speaker challenged us to be lifelong learners, and that’s my advice for you as you graduate. Whatever you do, never stop learning, exploring, growing and challenging yourself to be your best.”
• “Sigue esforzándote para alcanzar todas tus metas. Tu graduación es solo el comienzo de un futuro lleno de posibilidades.”

Writing tip: What’s the best life advice you’ve ever received? Or, what’s the most important thing you’ve learned so far? Answering either of those questions might be the perfect lead-in to a meaningful graduation message.

For a Family Member  

When it’s a family member graduating—whether it’s your sibling, your child, your niece or nephew, your cousin or even your parent—you might want to add an extra measure of warmth and pride.

• “Your graduation day is a proud day for you and a dream come true for our family.”
• “Congrats on graduating summa cum laude! I’m beyond proud to be related to someone so smart.”
• “Know what makes your graduation extra special? It’s having watched you grow up, having so many good memories of you and knowing all the challenges you’ve worked through to get to this day.”
• “Tu graduación es un día de orgullo para toda la familia, ¡así que vamos a celebrar!”
• “Congratulations, with love for the grandson you are and with pride in the amazing person you are becoming.”
• “It seems like just yesterday you were just a kid starting high school…now you’re a confident young man about to receive your diploma. It’s been our joy to watch you grow and achieve so much these past four years. Hope you know how proud we are and how much we love you.”
• “It’s a beautiful thing, watching the daughter we’ve always loved growing up and getting one step closer to her dreams. Congratulations, with all our love,”
• “Es maravilloso verte crecer y alcanzar tus metas. Te queremos mucho y estamos muy orgullosos de ti.”

Helpful tip: It’s probably most natural to share a memory of the graduate, but you could also share a memory from your own life experiences or graduation—anything that would be relevant to the graduate and fun or meaningful for him or her to read.
