3 Minute Thesis Entries Now Open!

It’s that time again… 3MT time!

One of the most exciting (and prestigious) competitions for research students is now underway for 2021. At the 3 Minute Thesis competition, your challenge is to present your Masters or doctoral research in just 3 minutes, with only 1 slide.

If you can do that well enough, you could become AUT’s 3MT champ and progress to national and international competitions (as well as winning great prizes).

Entries are now open, and you can find all the info and online entry forms on our Student Hub Online 3MT page .

If you’re quick, you can also book into our Presentation Skills for the 3MT Competition workshop on Monday at 1pm on the city campus. (If you can’t make that time, there’s another session on Thursday 10 June .) This workshop covers the judging criteria and lots of tips and tricks for writing your content, fine-tuning your delivery, and designing the perfect slide.

This year, like last year, entry is via video. That’s because 3MT is an international competition, and many competing nations are still in COVID lockdown and unable to gather for live presentations. But don’t worry, we’ll support you through the process of making and editing your video. It may require slightly more technical work than presenting live, but at least there’s no stage fright!

For more insights into the process of creating a video 3MT entry, check out our articles about the experiences of last year’s winners Marianne Carroll (Masters) and Megan Burfoot (Doctoral) .

The University of Otago is continuing its success at national and international Three Minute Thesis competitions.

Two of the University’s competitors picked up the People’s Choice award at the 2021 Matariki Network of Universities 3MT competition and a Highly Commended award at the National Universities 3MT Masters Competition.

Tourism PhD candidate, Patrick Boudreau was named the winner of the People’s Choice award in the 2021 Matariki Network of Universities Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition. This is the third year in a row Otago has won this award.

Patrick competed against fellow Otago PhD candidate Pradeesh Parameswaran and 11 others from Dartmouth, Durham, Queen’s, Tübingen, Uppsala and University of Western Australian universities.

He said it was an award for his research participants and the numerous communities that supported him throughout the 3MT process.

“Adventure sports have helped me through the grueling journey that is a PhD. My hope is that my research will help more people to safely venture on their own adventurous journey and reap the benefits of the great outdoors for themselves,” Patrick said.

Patrick’s thesis investigates the integrated model of flow and clutch optimal psychological states in the context of adventure recreation

Additionally, master’s student Giverny Forbes (Zoology) received the Highly Commended award at the National Universities 3MT Masters Competition at Waikato University recently. Her research is investigating the perceived impacts of human-leopard seal cohabitation in New Zealand and the goal is to support the wellbeing of both.

Graduate Research School Manager, Andrew Lonie says the University is consistently producing high quality and engaging Three Minute Thesis presentations, as evidenced by Otago finalists’ further success at national and international competitions.

“Giverny and Patrick have performed extremely well to maintain this record this year,” he said.

“Otago candidates are clearly recognised by wider audiences as well as judges, picking up People’s Choice awards with particular frequency.

“Most pleasing of all, has been how professional and supportive of each other our 3MT candidates are, no matter what stages of the competitions they have reached.”

3MT competition

Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) is a research communication competition developed by The University of Queensland (UQ) where competitors have just three minutes to present their thesis and its significance in an inspiring and captivating way. The 2024 AUT 3MT Competition is by video submission.

Read more information about the 3MT Competition on the UQ website.

Dates, criteria, rules and resources

  • Presentations are limited to 3 minutes and competitors exceeding 3 minutes are disqualified.
  • Presentations are considered to have commenced when a presenter starts their presentation through speech (timing does not include the 3MT title slide and commences from when the competitor starts speaking, not the start of the video).
  • Filmed on the horizontal;
  • Filmed on a plain background*;
  • Filmed from a static position;
  • Filmed from one camera angle;
  • Contain a 3MT title slide;
  • For ‘cut to’ the slide can be displayed as many times as you like for a maximum of 1 minute.
  • For top right corner or right side the slide must be displayed for the entire presentation.

  • The 3 minute audio must be continuous – no sound edits or breaks.
  • No additional props (e.g. costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment and animated backgrounds) are permitted within the recording. Presentations are to be spoken word (e.g. no poems, raps or songs).
  • No additional electronic media (e.g. sound and video files) are permitted within the video recording.
  • The decision of the adjudicating panel is final.

*Entirely in one colour and has no pattern, design, writing - no sheets, furniture, visible wall seams, etc.

Please note:

  • Competitors will not be judged on video/ recording quality or editing capabilities (optional inclusions). Judging will focus on the presentation, ability to communicate research to a non-specialist audience and 3MT PowerPoint slide
  • After each competition round, competitors have the option to either submit their current presentation or rerecord and submit a new presentation for entry into the next round

At every level of the competition each competitor will be assessed on the judging criteria listed below. Each criterion is equally weighted and has an emphasis on audience.
