About Ghost

Ghost is a Swedish heavy metal band that was formed in Linköping, Sweden in 2006. In 2010, they released a 3-track demo followed by a 7" vinyl titled "Elizabeth", and later their debut full-length album Opus Eponymous. The Grammis-nominated album was widely praised and significantly increased their popularity. Their second album and major label debut Infestissumam was released in 2013, debuted at number one in Sweden, and won the Grammis Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Album. The band released their third studio album, Meliora, in 2015, to much critical acclaim and high record sales, reaching number one in their home country of Sweden, and number eight in the United States. Its lead single, "Cirice", earned them the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. Ghost is easily recognizable owing greatly to its eccentric on-stage presence. Five of the group's six members, its 'Nameless Ghouls,' wear virtually identical, face-concealing costumes. The most distinguishable member is its vocalist, called 'Papa Emeritus', who wears a prosthetic mask of skull face paint and appears as what can be described as a "demonic anti-Pope." Each album cycle has brought about a change in the band's appearance. Though the vocalist is always portrayed as roughly the same archetypal character, there are slight appearance changes, and even altered personality traits from former versions. All of the band members' true identities were kept anonymous until 2017, when five former members revealed themselves, four of whom filed a lawsuit against the lead singer Tobias Forge, marking the confirmation of his true identity.

Ghost announce UK and Europe ‘Imperatour’ arena dates for 2022

Ghost will perform their dark rituals in some of Europe’s largest indoor venues on their Imperatour in spring 2022

Ghost tour 2022

Ghost will launch their biggest ever European headline tour in April, kicking off the trek with four arena shows in the UK.

With the follow-up to the band’s 2018 Prequelle album due for release at some point next year, Tobias Forge’s ghouls will follow up on their 26-city US co-headline tour with Volbeat, with an expansive tour of their home continent in the spring.

Ghost’s Imperatour will commence on April 9 at Manchester’s AO Arena and visit London, Glasgow and Birmingham before tapping into Europe with a show at Rotterdam’s RTM Stage Ahoy on April 17. The European dates will run through to May 18 at the Budapest Arena in Hungary.

The 2022 Imperatour will call at:

Apr 09: Manchester AO Arena, UK Apr 11: London O2 Arena, UK Apr 13: Glasgow OVO Arena Apr 15: Birmingham Resorts World Arena Apr 17: Rotterdam RTM Stage Ahoy, HOL Apr 18: Paris Accor Arena, FRA Apr 19: Cologne Lanxess Arena, GE April 21: Leipzig Quarterback Immobillen Arena, GER Apr 22: Frankfurt Festhalle, GER Apr 24: Prague Arena, CZE Apr 27: Tampere Nokia Arena, FIN Apr 29: Stockholm Avicii Arena, SWE Apr 30: Oslo Spektrum, NOR May 01: Malmo Arena, SWE May 03: Brussells Forest, BEL May 05: Milan Mediolanum Forum, ITA May 07: Barcelona Olympic Arena Badalona, SPA May 08: Madrid Vistalegre Arena, SPA May 11: Vienna Stadthalle, AUS May 13: Zurich Hallenstadion, SWI May 15: Hanover Zag Arena, GER May 16: Munich Olympiahalle, GER May 18: Budapest Arena, HUN

Support on all shows comes from Uncle Acid And The Deadbeats and TwinTemple. Ghost’s creative mastermind Tobias Forge has already revealed the source material which inspired his writing for the new album. “The album that I have been working on, I came up with that concept years ago,” Forge revealed in an interview with El Paso, Texas rock radio station KLAQ . “We played in Seattle in 2013, 2014 — something like that — we played at Showbox At The Market. I remember that day I came up with the idea for this record, this upcoming record. Because I got a book called The Rule of Empires . So, basically, I wanted to make a record about the rise and ultimately the unescapable fails and falls of empires."

"An idea like that can take — at least me — quite far. So once you get that idea of, like, 'Oh, now I know what the pile is gonna look like. I know now what not to put in there.' And it was the same thing with Prequelle; it was gonna be about the great death, a medieval, primordial threat of annihilation which was, I guess I wouldn't say carnal but maybe a tiny tad more spiritual and philosophical death, with the ever presence of actual termination, whereas this record about the empires was gonna be a little bit more practical, I guess; a little bit more, I don't wanna say political. So it wasn't really hard to be inspired by the last couple of years." Ghost released their first new material in two years at the end of September. Hunter’s Moon features on the soundtrack of the new Halloween Kills film, and will be released on seven inch vinyl on January 21, 2022 with legendary composer John Carpenter’s  Halloween Kills (Main Title)  theme as the B-side.

Vienna Ghosts and Legends Tour

  • 9.10 / 10 509 reviews | 4,886 travellers Luis was an excellent guide, it was very cold but with all the attitude he told us stories, he showed us photos and information about the city. Very nice. 10 Anonymous
  • Free cancellation up to 1 hours before the service starts

Cruel murders and dark secrets lurk in the dark corners of Vienna's old town . Come, if you dare, and discover the mysteries and eerie legends of Austria's capital.

Mysteries lurking

We'll meet at the indicated time at Helmut Zilk Square to begin this chilling tour of the mysteries and legends in Vienna . Are you ready?

First, we'll stop in front of the Vienna State Opera , an iconic building where we'll remember the expulsion of the Jews by the Nazis and how its structure was left after the bombings of World War II . This and many other gory facts hide behind this building's walls, so keep your eyes sharp.

Then, we'll walk along Augustinerstrasse to find out who Erzsébet Báthory was, nicknamed the 'Blood Countess' , who murdered over 30 young women because of her obsession with retaining her looks.

During this tour, we'll pass past St. Joseph's Square and St. Michael's Square to reach the parish of the Friars Minor , where you can still see the cannonball holes from the war between the Habsburg Monarchy and the Ottoman Empire.

In our next destination, we'll unravel the hidden meaning behind the name of the House of the Five Murders and stop at the Am Hof square, the former site of public executions in the city .

But that's not all! We'll also discover the mysteries lurking at Hoher Markt , the Heiligenkreuzerhof building, the Schönlatern alley,  and the 'bloody alley' , where a massacre from the times of the Knights Templar took place.

Lastly, we'll arrive at St. Stephen's Cathedral - what is the significance of the gargoyles on its façade ? Spirits and legends loom over this imposing temple.

After an hour-and-a-half route, the tour will end at the entrance to the church.

The Nu Band | The Dope and The Ghost | Live in Vienna | Not Two Records

Not Two, 2007 | MW 788-2 | CD

Roy Campbell, Jr. – trumpet, flugelhorn, vocals – Mark Whitecage – alto saxophone, clarinet, newspeak | Joe Fonda – bass | Lou Grassi – drums | Marco Eneidi (Guest) – alto sax (track #4 only)

Recorded live at Porgy & Bess Jazz and Music Club, Vienna, Austria , January 27, 2005. Cover: computer image “The Dope” (c) 2006 by Mark Whitecage. Newspeak for BushWacked

We are no longer looking forward to a fascist regime, we are in it. I predict there will be political prisoners before the year is out. The government may go bankrupt, which is what Bush seems to have planned. The head of the ERA, who called for more arsenic in our water and mercury in our air, is going to be the head of our health care. The man (Alberto Gonzales), who believes in no law is going to be Attorney General.

The American people have spoken – they want this fool in power. If Americans have no health care, no jobs, well, so be it. They gave it up for their King. Like the French revolution in reverse, idiotic Americans said, “Here, take our children to war and kill them, blow off their limbs. Take my job and send it to China. Take my health care and we will rely on your healing power to make us well. Let the pharmaceutical industry run the PDA. Take away our rights to sue corrupt corporations and negligent doctors and do not allow us to hold anyone accountable for all the harm you, your administration, and the big guns that elected you, are doing to our air, our water, and our bodies. Continue to leave all children behind with your stupid No Child Left Behind Law.

And while you’re at it, take our social security and give it to Wall Street. Make the head of the ERA, (the agency that wants more arsenic in our water and greater mercury in our air), in charge of the country’s health.

Appoint the worst National Security Advisor in history as head of the State Department. Reappoint the leader of this debacle of a war for another term. Support him in his disdain for the troops.

After all George, you are the voice of God!!! — Excerpt from an article by Elaine Cassel

Mark Whitecage | Photo by Rozanne Levine

Formed as a collaborative venture in 2000

The Nu Band consisting of Mark Whitecage on alto saxophone and clarinet, Lou Grassi on drums, Roy Campbell on trumpet and flugelhorn and Joe Fonda on bass explores in a very interesting way the intersection of mainstream and free jazz. It is clear that the musicians have a great respect for the jazz tradition and use that as a springboard for their compositions and improvisations on this album. “Lower East Side Blues” opens the album with a strong and deep performance, with the soloing and ensemble playing marking a fertile and earthy feel . . . This was a well played and thoroughly enjoyable album of progressive jazz that is quite accessible. The music is both thoughtful and exciting and the musicians involved have a deep sense of the jazz tradition without being beholden to it. — Tim Niland . Music and More

. . . an excellent snapshot

of one day in the life of a quartet that’s taking the basic jazz elements of Swing, surprise, and imagination to make it all Nu again. It gets better each time around.” — Stuart Kremsky . Cadence

The Dope and The Ghost

commences with Joe Fonda’s retro, beatnik style walking bass lines and the artists’ President Bush-bashing in front of a Viennese audience on “BushWacked. The political component sets the tone for the band’s progressive jazz and improvisational forays. The members orate a denouncement for seemingly every policy that the President has put in place, setting high expectations for when the musical festivities would kick in. And the sparks really do fly when the band gets down to business.

This quartet outing highlights the integration of hyper-mode phrasings, torrid exchanges and judicious placement of melodically-tinged themes. They fuse a sweetener into the mix, and it all pans out rather effectively. But trumpeter Roy Campbell, Jr.’s abysmally off-key vocals at the onset of “Where Has My Father Gone?, segues into a wailing cutting session with saxophonist Mark Whitecage and drummer Lou Grassi’s relentless polyrhythmic attack. Here, the band morphs angst—perhaps the political element—with a jubilant melody line that generates a sonorous touch amid the musicians’ fiery exchanges. Then, on the finale, “Next Step, the ensemble, featuring guest artist/alto saxophonist Marco Eneidi, executes a stewing framework, accelerated by rambunctious cat-and-mouse dialogues via a frenetic gait. However, they tone the proceedings down a bit for the coda.

Putting a few beefs aside, the instrumentalists’ stylistic mode of operation and intuitive interplay cannot be understated. These seasoned modern jazz warriors exalt a hodgepodge of emotively-charged and revved-up undercurrents that yield the winning edge. — Glenn Astarita, AllAbout Jazz

The Nu Band is something special.

Free free bop with a political message. On their last album they ended with it, on this one they start with it : a long blues-based romp called “Bushwacked”, with Roy Campbell “reciting” a newspaper article on President Bush’s administration and doubtful policies, and even if this kind of message tends to be tedious in musical settings, this one works well, because the four musicians change this blues into a high energy free jazz piece. The four are Roy Campbell on trumpet, Mark Whitecage on alto sax and clarinet, Joe Fonda on bass, Lou Grassi on drums. Marco Eneidi joins on alto on one – twenty minute long – track. And what can I say? These guys ARE free jazz. Each of them has played a major role in shaping what the genre is today, in showing new ways of expressing emotions and of jointly creating a superb listening experience by … well by listening to the other band members in the first place and then adding to it, enhancing it, pushing it further, creating new dialogues and phrases. This is music that is adventurous, emotional, but at times so tight, so interlocked, so on the same level, that it’s getting uncanny. But the greatest thing : it’s real fun too. The intensity! The interplay! The melodies! The emotions! The music! And indeed, something which can only work in front of a live audience.– Steph.blogspot

One thought on “ The Nu Band | The Dope and The Ghost | Live in Vienna | Not Two Records ”

Not easily pigeonholed, the music of The Nu Band negotiates the boundaries of free-bop, improvisation, chamber, and traditional jazz with bias toward none. That cannot be said of the band’s politics. Giving no quarter to the current Bush administration, they take our ‘king’ to task from the opening notes of the disc’s centerpiece—”BushWhacked.

Saxophonist Mark Whitecage originally recorded BushWhacked: A Spoken Opera (Acoustics ELE, 2005), a Dubya denunciation with his Bi-Coastal Orchestra, a band he leads with his wife Rozanne Levine. The title track easily morphs into this new quartet setting. The 17-minute rant and response between players, is an update on the kind of political tirades you might have heard at a Charles Mingus concert in the late 1960s. Sung and spoken protest is delivered over the slow burning blues centered on the heavy vibe laid down by bassist Joe Fonda. The fireworks soon start, the players trade tirade for interplay—making their point—negotiating tightrope walking acrobatics and burning moments.

The next track “Where Has My Father Gone, at 16 minutes, was penned by trumpeter Roy Campbell for his recently deceased father. His muted trumpet opens the first three minutes. After he expresses grief, the band enters the procession with interlocking horns, before Campbell sings his tribute. The band swells into some very hip swinging changes over their brand of free-bop. This quartet can be heard on two prior sessions, Live At The Bop Shop (Clean Feed, 2001) and Nu Band (Konnex, 2003). Their interplay and cohesiveness is quite impressive. The dialogue they have for such a loosely assembled unit is anything but loose.

The final track adds saxophonist Marco Eneidi to the stage. The quiet opening leads into some intense three horn improvisation as drummer Lou Grassi fuels every exchange. The power displayed by Whitecage and Eneidi are surely enough to stop a war. Well, one can only hope.

In a city as old and historic as vienna, it’s no doubt that it’s going to host one or two places that have an eerie vibe to them. it’s hard to describe what exactly this vibe is, but one word comes to mind – haunted..

Vienna’s got a number of places that own ghost stories that will give your goosebumps when standing in their presence.

You can pay our restless Viennese ghosts, and give yourself the thrill of a scare, by visiting these 10 haunted places!

Hofburg – Most haunted places in Vienna

The Hofburg is probably one of the most haunted places in Vienna.

Not only is there supposed to be a guard who was falsely accused of rape and is now still trying to prove his innocence, but rumour has it that even Sisi is roaming around the hallways at night.

They say that during her lifetime, the Empress was fascinated by the supernatural and that’s why many people believe her spirit is still amongst the living.

Nußdorferstraße 45 – Most haunted places in Vienna

Even though Franz Schubert hasn’t released any new music in quite some time, his ghost seems to be coming up with new rhythms all the time.

It’s said that unexplainable things seem to happen quite often in  Schubert’s birth house at Nußdorferstraße 45. Some visitors claim to have heard weird knocking noises, footsteps and a select few have reported to even have felt the old composer’s presence. Maybe Schubert is really desperately trying to compose a new hit album from the afterlife.

Seitenstettengasse 6 – Most haunted places in Vienna

A white cat that brings mischief to anyone who looks at it? Sounds like something straight out of a creepy children’s story, right?

Well, for the Viennese this is the story that goes with the Katzensteighaus .

As the story goes – a woman once tried to poison her husband but died herself that night. The basement walls and windows are all blocked off and it’s known that no tenant stays for long. Coincidence? We think not.

And what is up with that one old wooden chair in the basement that is emitting electromagnetic rays even though there is no electricity network nearby?

All of these things indicate this building’s full of people living there that are no longer the living.

Esterházygasse 9 – Most haunted places in Vienna

Glasses falling off tables, plates dropping out of the cupboard, and the sound of furniture being moved about. All of this seems to happen occasionally at the restaurant, Kaiserwalzer.

Some regular guests even state that they’ve had encounters with shadowy figures while dining. The Kaiserwalzer used to be the premsise of the k.u.k. Hofkunsttischlers Bernhard Ludwig maybe he is the one who likes to join guests while they’re having their beer.

Hoher Markt – Most haunted places in Vienna

During the 14th and the 19th century, the Hoher Markt was the most famous site where executions took place in Vienna. Yep, it may look fancy now and house one of the fanciest supermarkets in the city (you can think of that next time you order a Leberkäse semmel), but back in the day, this is where hundreds of people were killed.

Most people who were sentenced to death here were either hung and quartered (when executed people are chopped up into pieces).

So think about it the next time you walk by – maybe you’ll feel the torment these people had to endure deep in your bones.

ghost band vienna

Leopoldsberg – Most haunted places in Vienna

Ever since the castle was built on  Leopoldsberg in the twelfth century, people tell each other ghost stories about the place.

Most dogs don’t even dare to go near it and passersby often report seeing lights in the windows like somebody is walking around the halls with a candle.

Can it be the ghosts of the royalty who once lived there? Saint Leopold himself? Or maybe it’s the members of the Turkish or Polish-Austrian armies who clashed in a battle there during the  Second Siege of Vienna

You might want to investigate that place yourself on one of your autumn strolls.

Friedhof der Namenlosen – Most haunted places in Vienna

Ghost hunters from all over the world make a pilgrimage to the cemetery of the nameless .

Apparently, it is one of the most haunted places in Europe. This wouldn’t be too surprising considering most of the people buried there encountered their death at the bottom of the Danube. Some of them drowned some of them were drowned.

Visitors claim to have seen reflections in the gravestone plaques and felt a strange feeling of not being alone.

Maybe it’s true and the nameless souls cannot rest until their names are known.

Augustinerstraße 12 – Most haunted places in Vienna

Countess Elisabeth Báthory liked to spend most of her winters right here in Vienna.

In the Stadtpalais at Augustinerstrasse 12 to be exact. According to her maids, Elisabeth killed more than 80 young girls. Most of them visited her to learn courtly etiquette and never made it back home.

They say that to kill these young women, good old Lizzy used various gruesome methods of torture.

According to the legend Viennese people tell each other: Fresh blood dripped down Elisabeth’s skin while torturing the girls and she realized that she wouldn’t age where the blood had touched her skin.

If you listen closely, you might still hear the screams of pain coming from the Stadtpalais.

Rauhensteingasse 10 – Most haunted places in Vienna

Until 1776, the Malefizspitzbubenhaus – the city’s criminal prison – stood where the building at Rauhensteingasse 10 stands today.

In its basement, prisoners were gruesomely tortured in order to force a confession out of them. A woman who had been accused of being a witch was so sacred of the forthcoming torture that she jumped in a nearby well to kill herself.

According to the legend prevailing at the time, her corpse was not allowed to be cremated. So her body was put in a barrel and thrown into the Danube destined to rot far, far away from Vienna. No wonder she’s haunting the place.

Blutgasse – Most haunted places in Vienna

The houses of Blutgasse in Vienna’s first district have a history that goes way back to the Middle Ages and are located in one of the oldest areas in Vienna.

Since 1862, the official name of the street is Blutgasse. There are many fascinating stories explaining the name, but the most common is the one about the Knights Templar.

Legend has it that in 1312, during the dissolution of this religious order of knights, numerous Templars were slaughtered in Blutgasse. They say their blood flowed down the alley and that’s how the street got its name.

It wouldn’t be surprising if one of them is still out there, wandering around with their sword, waiting to avenge their death.

Auburn wins Metallica Marching Band Competition, gets $85K in prizes

Posted: January 8, 2024 | Last updated: January 8, 2024

Bang the drums and clash the cymbals! The Auburn University Marching Band has won the top spot in the Metallica Marching Band Competition , along with a designation as fan favorite. As a result, the band will receive a total of $85,000 in prizes, consisting of musical instruments and equipment for their school programs.

The members of Metallica — singer James Hetfield, drummer Lars Ulrich, guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo — chose the winners of the contest, announcing the results on Sunday night via social media. Fan favorites were determined by online voting .

“Back in April, we challenged marching bands across the country to create performances incorporating our music into their shows,” the band said on Instagram and Twitter. “The response blew us away and made for a heated competition, and the results are in!”

Auburn’s band was one of 450 marching bands at colleges and high schools throughout the country who signed up for the contest, according to a Metallica publicist. Two other marching bands from Alabama, the Cleveland High School Golden Force Band and the Pell City High School Marching Band of Gold , were top five finalists in high school divisions of the contest, vying for $15,000 each in prizes. However, neither of them was named a winner in their divisions or a fan favorite.

To enter the contest, marching bands submitted YouTube videos of their ensembles playing one of 13 Metallica songs . The list of available songs included “Enter Sandman,” “Master of Puppets,” “Fade to Black,” “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” “Creeping Death” and “Seek & Destroy.” ( See the full contest rules here .) Finalists were selected by a team of seven judges who are professional musicians with experience as band directors and teachers.

Watch Auburn’s winning performance in the video below.

Auburn’s performance was filmed on Oct. 21, 2023, during halftime at a game that pitted the Auburn Tigers against the Ole Miss Rebels, according to The Auburn Plainsman . LED lights were attached to the band members’ hats, and were synchronized to the music. The performance featured Metallica’s “For Whom The Bell Tolls,” “Wherever I May Roam,” “Master of Puppets,” “Nothing Else Matters” and “Enter Sandman.”

Auburn University celebrated its win via social media, saying, “On to VICTORY … strike up the #MetallicaMarchingBand competition winners for the Collegiate Division 1 category! Voted fan favorite, too🥹Way to go, @auburnbands.”

Here’s the full list of finalists in the Metallica Marching Band Competition, with the names of winners in bold type:

Most Haunted Places in Vienna, Austria

Haunted Vienna, Austria

Vienna is a truly picturesque city and one that is easy to fall in love with. The culture, architecture and people make it a lively destination, with plenty of history to discover at every turn. Though the city is a beautiful one, it does have a dark side. Thousands of skeletons lurk beneath the city streets and ties to the infamous Blood Countess exist within haunted Vienna.

The dark side of Vienna, Austria.

Blood Street (Blutgasse)

A name as direct and descriptive as Blood Street should certainly foster a ghost story or two. In the heart of Vienna’s city center lies a completely unsuspecting street. This narrow passage cutting through towering apartment buildings is known as Blutgasse. This translates to Blood Street.

Blutgasse, Vienna haunted.

Blutgasse was the location many of the Knights Templars were murdered. They were hiding out in one of Blood Street’s central buildings before being located and slaughtered. It is told that there was such carnage and blood spilled upon the street it was named Blutgasse as a result.

Adding to the horrific past of this small pedestrian side street is its relationship with executions. Walking down Blood Street is to follow in the footsteps of many who were executed for crimes in Vienna. This was indeed the final walk many took to arrive at the city’s execution area.

Haunted Blood Street in Vienna by night.

This dark and bloody past has led many to believe that Blood Street is one of the most haunted places in Vienna. Could the ghosts of the past be wandering this narrow passage?

Hungarian House (Ungarisches Haus)

One of the most unsuspecting places in Vienna to have housed such terror is known as the Hungarian House (Ungarisches Haus). This simple building was supposedly a temporary home to one of the most infamous serial killers of all time. It is said that Elizabeth Bathory, better known as the Blood Countess, spent some time at this residence whilst her husband was studying in Vienna. She is rumored to have tortured and murdered hundreds of young women to drink and bathe in their blood.

Haunted house in Vienna of the Blood Countess, Elizabeth Bathory.

Majority of these supposed crimes are said to have occurred at Cachtice Castle in Slovakia. Though, her murderous rampage is rumored to have begun in this Vienna property. Her accomplices lured young women from the nearby marketplace to the house, where they were tortured and murdered.

Haunted house of Vienna, Austria.

The truth behind Elizabeth Bathory’s crimes has been debated. Nevertheless, many people think that the Hungarian House is haunted. With tortured souls thought to be trapped within this haunted Vienna residence.

Cemetery of the Nameless

One of the spookiest and least known places in Vienna is the Cemetery of the Nameless . This small, slightly overgrown cemetery is known locally as the Freidhof der Namenlosen. It lies on the outskirts of the city, is rarely visited and is surrounded by large industry.

Crucifix in haunted Austrian cemetery.

This cemetery is filled with unidentified people who washed ashore the Danube River. Consequently, the cemetery was erected to serve as a solution to the many bodies accumulating along the river bank. Especially since they weren’t able to be interred at Vienna’s Catholic cemeteries due to many of them being suicide victims.

Graves of the nameless in Vienna.

Many people claim that the souls of these nameless people continue to roam the area where they were buried. Though, a former caretaker of the cemetery is also thought to remain as a ghost.

Cemetery of the Nameless in Vienna.

St. Stephen’s Cathedral

St. Stephen’s Cathedral is one of the most recognizable, beautiful and sacred landmarks in all of Vienna. It adorns the town center with its mighty presence and is an unmissable attraction within the city. Though, what lies within the bowels of this gorgeous, holy place may shock you.

Inside St. Stephen's Cathedral.

Below the floor of the Saint Stephen’s Cathedral exists a series of crypts and even some densely packed catacombs. One of these crypts is known as the Ducal Crypt. It is best known for containing organs of past royals. Though their bodies are buried elsewhere, it was customary to remove particular organs and have them kept underneath the Cathedral in jars.

What is even more disturbing, is the lower levels beneath the church. Here lies a series of catacombs. Comprised of deep crypts where bodies were once discarded of since the bubonic plague had produced so many deaths. Eventually, this became a problem as the smell of rotting corpses began to waft into Vienna’s most holy place. As a solution, a select few unfortunate prisoners were tasked with creating order amongst these bodies. They were to clean and arrange the skeletal remains into neatly stacked piles.

Though there are no ghost stories that surround the Saint Stephen Cathedral, some do believe it was once haunted by the Devil himself. It is also very creepy to tour the lower levels!

Amazing! Thanks a lot for the info. I want to make a video with creepy locations in Vienna for Halloween and this article was especially helpful 🙂

Glad my article was helpful. Did you watch my video?

I love exploring haunted areas. Do you recommend any specific tours or audio guides for these places?

Hi Angela, Unfortunately I didn’t do any public tours of this nature, but I found most of these we were able to walk to ourselves, and we generally like exploring foreign cities ourseles anyway.
