Fan Film Review: Freddy vs Ghostbusters!
May 19, 2018 Chuck Ransford Retro Review , Reviews
As is obvious from the title, this short film (34 minutes) pits the Springwood slasher, Freddy Krueger, against a new team of Ghostbusters.
The nightmare is always the same: dirty brown hat, striped sweater, and a glove of razors. Neil is having a lot of trouble sleeping lately, and the terrors are getting worse. Fortunately, help soon arrives in the the form of an old friend, Ed Spengler–nephew of Ghostbuster great Egon Spengler. With the help of their friend Eugene, Ed and Neil establish a Denver division of the Ghostbusters. Before long business is booming, but eventually they know they will have to face off against Freddy Krueger himself.
The same could be said of the way Bradley J. Roddy portrayed Freddy Krueger. I was glad to see that Roddy’s performance of the iconic slasher wasn’t something to be embarrassed by. It is obvious that Roddy is a fan of the series and has studied the way Robert Englund has played Freddy. Freddy looked great, sounded great, and Roddy’s performance is a big part of the reason why Freddy vs Ghostbusters should be near the top of the list of horror fan films.
An impressive thing for me was the authenticity of the Ghostbusters gadgets. Faithful to the originals, the equipment didn’t look like shoddy cardboard and tape. Closely related to this was the above average use of digital effects in a low budget fan film. The Slimer cameo was well done, and the proton beams coming from the proton gun looked great. While not over the top with gore, the practical effects used in the various Freddy kills were satisfactory, not looking laughably cheap or weak.
The real standout with this movie, though, is the story itself. Sometimes when movie crossovers happen, they happen in such a way that seems forced or doesn’t make any sense. Such is not the case with Freddy vs Ghostbusters . The execution of the plot is superb, and the match-up between the two cinema giants was just as fun as you’d hope it’d be. I won’t spoil the winner, you’ll have to just watch it for yourself to see who comes out on top.

The ability to build props and apply makeup is not a sufficient reason to make a fan film . Terrible writing, directing, and acting. - ▼▼

“I’ve had enough of this crap, I’m going to Quiznos’!”
“Why’d your uncle tell me to drop my psych major, so I could look at some spooks?”
“ ‘Queer!’ ‘You must be mistaken, he’s a scientist’ “
“These proton packs, they’re hella cool”
That’s all in the first 5 minutes...
The BAD TO THE BONE needledrop over the “Denver Ghostbusters” just sitting at a bar talking is emblematic of the entire film.

It's fun to pretend.

honestly, this film was really entertaining, works well with the established lore of both franchises and leans into the comedy aspects of both. there are of course criticisms to be had with the writing, but honestly, this is such a fun and charming fan film i can’t but help write those off because the passion and well thought out jokes that had me laughing as i watched it. great fan film and is worth a watch

i think most of the people giving this movie poor reviews are trying to be the next professional movie critic, and forget that sometimes, a big budget and a hollywood patina is not all that makes a movie good.
yes, a lot of things about this movie has aged poorly including the special fx and humor, but you can't deny that it's a fan project with a lot of heart and devotion to a franchise that has meant a lot to people over the past near 40 years. to me, putting your heart into something is still worth quite a lot, even if it isn't blockbuster quality! fan films have a certain charm to them and the creators deserve a lot of respect for all that hard work.

A fun little fan film. Some aspects haven’t aged well, but I had fun watching it.

Not to spoil anything but fans of the classic Nightmare on Elk Street series should pay attention to the emblem on the letter that Freddy Cruger gets at the end

Neil Anderson dreams of being chased by Freddy Krueger and wakes up as Freddy slashes with his claws. After arguing with Chuck, his layabout roommate, Neil leaves his apartment to pick up his friends Ed Spengler (nephew of Egon) and Eugene O'Fitzpatrick. While stopping at a bar they discuss Neil's crush on Nancy, Chuck's girlfriend, and Ed's reason for coming to Denver: a recent surge in PKE. A green poltergeist resembling Slimer appears in the bar, and using equipment brought by Ed the three successfully bust it. A montage follows of the new Ghostbusters setting up a new franchise.
After an exhausting week, Ed finds time to question Neil about the recurring nightmares he has about meeting Freddy. At the same time, Chuck falls asleep in Neil's bed (his own is buried under a pile of garbage) and meets Freddy, who guts him and uses his head for a bong. Ed concludes that Freddy's spirit is contained in Neil's mattress, and his presence is what brought the other ghosts into the city. They burn the mattress hoping to either destroy Freddy or reveal him, but nothing appears to happen.
Freed of the mattress, Freddy kills a string of teenagers and then traps Nancy in the dream world, seemingly to provoke a confrontation with the Ghostbusters. They arrive at Nancy's house but wonder how they can defeat Freddy until Jared, mascot for Subway restaurants, appears and tells them how to rig equipment to allow them to project themselves into Freddy's dream world. Jared then takes a nap and is killed by Freddy as well.
Neil and Eugene are sent to the dream world, where Eugene grabs hold of Freddy and has Ed transport them back to the real world. However, Freddy damages the equipment, stranding Neil in the dream world. He is almost immediately surrounded by menacing phantoms that prove immune to his proton pack. Eugene tries to keep Freddy busy while Ed enters the dream world and manages to catapult himself and Neil back to reality by crossing the streams. The Ghostbusters trap Freddy, and a grateful Nancy flies into Neil's arms.
Following the credits, Freddy is seen walking through a black void(presumably the inside of the Denver Ghostbusters' Containment Unit) where he meets Jason Voorhees (villain of the Friday the 13th movies), and the two killers run to attack each other.
- In one scene, music from the Mega Man video games can be heard(specifically the boss theme from Mega Man X and Bubble Man's stage theme from Mega Man 2).
- Freddy's battle against Jason is a reference to the film Freddy vs. Jason.
