As pointed out later in the article, Selena Gomez’s “Ghost of You” made headlines in 2021, over a decade after it was released, due to comparison in name it drew to a song Justin Bieber dropped in March of that year entitled “ Ghost “. 

At the time we debunked the theory that the two were related since fans of pop stars as monumental as these tend to search for even the most superficial evidence to link their lyrics to true-life romances, for as you probably already know Bieber and Gomez dated for some time. 

However, in now researching “Ghost of You” also, it must be said that the two tracks are not only similar in name but also very alike in sentiment. 

And we’re not going back now and say that “Ghost” is actually about Selena or anything like that. Rather let’s just say it wouldn’t be completely ludicrous to believe that it was inspired by “Ghost of You” overall.

Similarities between “Ghost of You” and “Ghost”

For instance, both cases are in fact love songs in which the singer is missing the “ghost” of an ex. And whereas on the surface, using such terminology may imply that said individual is dead, again in both cases this is apparently not the case. 

Rather the titular terminology is more of a metaphor. And what it actually points to is this ex, whom the singer was close to, no longer being in her (or in Bieber’s case his) life. 

And even more specifically despite this person being permanently gone, his “ghost” still lingers, which is an allegory for her being unable to get over him.

Differences

But there are some differences also between the songs also. For instance, Selena doesn’t focus so much on the present per se.  Or rather, it’s more like the way she has changed in the aftermath of falling in love. 

She isn’t the same person that she was before, being “ too naïve ” back then. And apparently the reason she refers to her former self in such a less-than-flattering manner is because in the midst of everything falling apart, she kinda feels dumb for falling in love with this guy in the first place. 

Or as she puts it in the first verse, she “ feel(s) so much better now ” that he’s gone. So it’s pretty apparent that she considered him to be akin to a toxic partner.

Sentiment of “Ghost of You”

Yet and still, as stated earlier such is not the thesis sentiment. Instead it is the fact that this ex still holds a lasting presence in her heart. 

The vocalist is hopeful that with enough time and prayer, she will be able to completely get him out of her system. Yet for the time being, she concludes that she must still be stuck on him for “a reason”.

So it is arguable that the reason she no longer views him favorably isn’t so much because he mistreated her during their relationship. Rather she really lost faith in him after their romance fell apart, insinuating that his behavior may have been the catalyst which caused such to happen. 

In other words, what she is primarily upset about is him leaving in the first place.

So conclusively, the vocalist of this song is heartbroken in the worst kind of way. And that is likely due to being jilted by the man who stole her heart.

Selena Gomez was actually an actress before becoming a music star. In fact she was a young child actress, appearing on  Barney & Friends  from around the time she was 10 years old. 

Then later she got down with Disney before fully venturing into music. And upon doing so she had her own band called the Scene. 

In fact she released three albums as the lead singer of Selena Gomez & the Scene before eventually going solo. And they were pretty successful. For instance, those three albums (which are listed below) all made it within the top 10 of the Billboard 200.

• “A Year Without Rain” (2010)
• “When the Sun Goes Down” (2011)

And the song “Ghost of You” is from the second of those projects, which reached fourth place on the Billboard 200.

But of course upon going solo, Gomez became an even bigger success. In fact all of the solo albums she has released to date, “Stars Dance” (2013), “Revival” (2015) and “Rare” (2020), scored a number 1 on the Billboard 200.

At that time this track was dropped, on 21 September 2010, the main membership of the Scene consisted of Greg Garman (drums), Joey Clement (bass guitar), Dane Forrest (keyboards) and Ethan Roberts (lead guitar).

This song was produced and co-written by Jonas Jeberg, a musician from Denmark. And the other cowriters are Ahmed Bittar, Shelly Peiken and Rasmus Seebach.

Resurgence in Popularity in 2021

This track experienced a slight bump in popularity – or at least quite a few mentions – in early 2021 when  some people began speculating  that Selena Gomez’s ex-boyfriend, Justin Bieber, named his track “ Ghost “, which came out during that time, after this one. 

As argued earlier, that may have been the case – and then some. However, some fans then took the theory a step further to actually postulate that “Ghost” is about Selena Gomez, which seems less likely.

He said: “I think that a lot of people in this day and age, in this time, are losing loved ones due to this crazy virus. But there’s a lot of people who have lost people from other things and just lose people, might not be a death, but have lost people that were in their life for a season and now that person isn’t.

“So, that can feel like a loss almost like you’re grieving that person so this song is kind of like that vibe of grieving that person but still having hope in the process.”

Is Justin Bieber ‘Ghost’ about Selena Gomez?

The many fan theories out there have sparked rumours that the track is about his former long-term girlfriend, who he was in an on-again-off-again relationship with for eight years.

One theory claims that the title of the track gives a nod to Selena’s 2014 track, ‘Ghost Of You’, which also alludes to missing someone after a failed relationship.

Despite JB not confirming the track was penned about his ex, it hasn’t stopped people thinking that the lyrics allude to their turbulent failed romance, with JB singing: “I miss you more than life”.

The song was released on March 19, 2021, as part of Justice , his sixth studio album. The album was recorded during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Bieber explained to Vogue that the song is about “losing somebody you love. And I know a lot of people have; I know this has been a really challenging year where we’ve lost loved ones and relationships too. The hook is saying, ‘If I can’t get close to you, I’ll settle for the ghost of you.’ That works for this quarantine situation […] we’re not relating and connecting in the same way. It has allowed us to only really have these memories. I hope this resonates and I hope it fills your heart up with joy or comfort in some sort of way.” In the music video of the song, Justin stars as he is consoling his grandmother after the loss of his grandfather.

The drama continues to unfold online when fans uncovered different activities between the Rhode and Rare Beauty founders. In one instance, Selena thanked a fan for acknowledging her struggles after her breakup from Justin in 2018 in a comment in a comment on a TikTok video in February 2023. “Does anybody just feel really bad for Selena Gomez? Like can you imagine going through a breakup so publicly with a guy who you were in love with for seven years and then like two months later he just marries someone,” TikTok user @ essymakingsounds  said in the video. “And then you have a chronic illness or an autoimmune disease — I can’t imagine that it’s fun. Living with that and the flareups in the public eye while people are watching you.”

The user continued, “And then dealing with mental health when life is hard enough already. Kudos to her for being so brave and so public and so open about her journey. But I bet if we ever walked a day in her shoes — where everything is so publicized — that would be so hard. So whenever I think about a hard day, I think about Selena Gomez. I feel bad saying that but if she can do it then everybody can.”

Justin Bieber’s Justice album has finally arrived, and fans are already dissecting the lyrics. In fact, some listeners are convinced that one particular song radiates major #Jelena energy . “I miss your touch some nights when I'm hollow / I know you cross the bridge that I can't follow," Bieber sings on “Ghost.” But is he hinting at missing Selena Gomez while currently being married to model Hailey Bieber? Honestly, it’s very unlikely. But hey, Jelena shippers can dream.

Upon hearing the song for the first time, fans flooded Twitter to share their thoughts and speculate about whether or not Gomez was the inspiration behind the track. “Justin Bieber wrote ‘Ghost’ about Selena Gomez you cannot prove me wrong,” one person tweeted . “The chorus in ghost... there's no way this isn’t about Selena,” another fan wrote . Several other people on social media agreed.

Clearly, it didn’t take much to convince some people that Bieber still has feelings for Gomez. However, many fans refuted that theory entirely, explaining that the song was actually written for anyone who lost a loved one to COVID-19.

Those who have been following along since Bieber and Gomez’s most recent split in 2018 know very well that Bieber is not here for anyone comparing his past relationship to his current one. Last year, for example, Bieber took to Instagram to slam a fan for saying that Jelena shippers need to “bombard” his wife’s Instagram live with comments about how “Selena is better.”

“This sad excuse of a human just encouraged people on video to literally go after my wife telling people to say that my previous relationship was better so on and so fourth [sic],” Bieber wrote on his Instagram story at the time. “I just wanted to share this so people get an idea of what we face on a day to day. It is extremely hard to choose to take the high road when I see people like this try and rally to gather people to bully the person I love the most in this world. It is not right.”

Hailey, for her part, took to Instagram after that incident to remind her followers to lift other women up instead of bringing them down. "It has truly gotten to a level of anger and hate that is shockingly unhealthy and sad," she wrote. "I would never in a million years wish for someone to be treated this way and I will never condone this kind of hateful behavior. I want only to support, uplift, and encourage other women in this industry and wish them nothing but love and success and I wish for all of my followers and supporters to do the same!!”

It’s something that truly excites her. 

Gomez has been open about her own journey with mental health. Her 2022 documentary, Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me , shares the story of the star going public with her diagnosis of bipolar disorder. Since then, she has continued to speak openly about her mental health struggles, her battle with lupus (she underwent a kidney transplant in 2017), and how it’s all affecting her daily life. 

“I don’t feel good all the time,” Gomez says. One of her biggest outlets is spending time with her 10-year-old sister, Gracie Elliott. “She reminds me of a perspective in life that can be a bit simpler and pure. Even just having a moment with her makes me feel better.”

The ability to be her true self around supportive friends, like fellow pop star Taylor Swift , also makes a huge difference in her life. “I can gauge the difference between someone who wants to actually get to know me versus someone who just wants to know me as a person,” Gomez says. “I’m grateful that I can tell.”

Gomez also has some advice for people who want to support a loved one who is going through a mental health struggle of their own: “Start with listening. One of the key components of a friendship for me is trust. I would also say: Be careful with who you trust. Hopefully someone can just hear you out and not judge you. The third season of "Only Murders in the Building" finished airing on Hulu earlier this week, and the show has already been renewed for a fourth season .

Short and Gomez's costar Steve Martin , who also cocreated the show, revealed back in 2021 that the cozy murder mystery series was originally intended to star three older men solving crimes.

However, producers eventually decided to write a younger woman into the show — with Gomez landing the part of Mabel.

In 2021, cocreator John Hoffman told the New York Times that they created a younger character so that the main characters wouldn't be too similar.

"Don't we want an alien in their world? The thing that we're not expecting, that doesn't make sense?" Hoffman recalled.

Gomez, 31, told TheWrap earlier this year that she worried that she wouldn't bond with Short, 73, and Martin, 78, before they met.

"I remember when I was leaving LA to go and shoot the first season, I was worried that I'd be a little lonely because I'd be on set and most of the time I would be with Steve and Marty, who I had only met briefly on Zoom," she said. "And the moment I got on set they made me feel included."

Gomez added: "Eventually they kind of just took me under their wing and picked on me and made me laugh and had words of wisdom when I needed them... Some of my best friends are 70-year-olds."

Selena Gomez’s ‘Mystery Man’ in Paris Isn’t Actually a Secret Boyfriend

Fans quickly identified him—and his connection to her friend group.

It didn’t take long for Selena Gomez’s visit to the City of Love to spark some dating rumors. On Monday, Page Six reported that Gomez was photographed holding hands with a “mystery man” while leaving a hotel where she had dinner with friends, including Brooklyn and Nicola Peltz Beckham. The group also attended a Paris Saint-Germain soccer game that day.

But the man isn’t Gomez’s boyfriend, fans quickly pointed out . He’s Ramsey Austin, and he’s dating Theresa Mingus, one of Gomez’s closest friends.

Mingus is also with Gomez and the group in Paris. She even shared photos of her and Austin having a cute PDA moment there.

She appeared with Gomez at the game, wearing a gray blazer at the end of the group’s row:

Gomez, meanwhile, went viral over the weekend when she posted a TikTok poking fun at her single status. She has been vocal about not being taken on her social media for months:

However, Gomez is very dedicated to her friends. Mingus and Gomez, in particular, have a years-long history, with Mingus once working as Gomez’s assistant. Mingus even discussed how it felt watching Gomez’s mental health struggles in the singer’s documentary, My Mind & Me .

Mingus also runs La’Mariette, a swimwear line that’s featured Gomez as a model and a collaborator. “She’s just so supportive,” Mingus told ELLE.com in an October 2020 interview.

For her Paris outing with friends yesterday, Gomez wore a mesh Ronny Kobo leopard dress, which is still available. She paired it with a leather Alexander McQueen robe:

The singer teased her next Paris look on Instagram on Monday, posting a selfie of her in a black blazer and blue eye makeup:

Selena Gomez is known for a lot of things: her music, beloved acting roles, mental health advocacy and, in the last few years, Rare Beauty.

Through the beauty line, the Only Murders in the Building actress found a way to intertwine beauty products with mental health initiatives.

“When I was younger, I thought I could save the world,” Gomez told the publication, crying. “It breaks my heart to hear a girl come up to me and say, ‘I was so close to taking my life, but when I watched your documentary, I couldn’t imagine doing that anymore.’ That’s the coolest gift, but yeah, look at me…,” she said, pointing at her tears. “It’s crazy to have that responsibility.”

The nonprofit aims to raise $100 million in 10 years in an effort to make mental health services and education more accessible for young people around the world. Her first annual Rare Impact Fund Benefit will take place in Los Angeles on Oct. 4, with appearances from her Only Murders co-star, Martin Short, and music producer Marshmello, featuring a special performance by H.E.R.

Elsewhere in the profile, the “Calm Down” singer spoke about her 90-day stint at a treatment facility in Tennessee, her lupus diagnosis and her eventual kidney transplant because of it. She also touched on revealing on an Instagram Live with Miley Cyrus that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, something she struggled to open up about.

When asked why she thought her fans were so loyal to her, the My Mind & Me documentary subject explained she thinks it’s because she’s relatable for a lot of young women.

“I’m not unattainable,” she said. “I look at someone like a Beyoncé, and I am amazed. My jaw drops. Every part of her is just impeccable, and it’s just so beautiful. I went to her show and was blown away. But I’m just not that, and that’s OK. I’m me, and I’m a little silly, but I also like being sexy and fun, and I also want to do good with the time I have here. We need goddesses like Beyoncé and Adele. But I’m just happy to be your best friend.”
