2023 Ghost Train Trail Race

Ghost Train is New Hampshire’s  O riginal  30 -H our  U ltramarathon and 100 miler! 

All  profits from the race  go to the conservation commissions of brookline and milford n.h.  every dollar gets put back into the trails, and returning runners can see the improvement each year  so far this race has raised over $100,000 for trail improvements.

Join us for the 14th annual Ghost Train Rail Trail Race to run 7.5 miles, 15 miles, 30 miles, or 30 hours along the  Granite Town Rail Trail .  

Race along the old railroad tracks that were used in the late 19th and early 20th century to ship granite from Milford and ice from Lake Potanipo in  Brookline  to Massachusetts.  The rails themselves were removed for scrap metal during World War II, but a few of the railroad ties are still in the ground and can be seen on the trail.

The trail itself is mostly straight, flat, and well groomed  with  only one hill.  Approximately one mile of each 15 – mile out-and-back is paved.  The race will consist of one or more  15- mile trail out-and-backs  and the trail will be well marked.  We don’t want you wandering off…  After all, the trail is haunted…  Find out more on our  course   page.

Welcome to New Hampshire's original 30-Hour 100 Mile Race! Ghost Train started in 2009 and is still running today as a fundraiser for the Brookline and Milford Conservation Commissions for trail improvements. ALL profits go directly back to the trails to make them more accessible to the community. The course is along the historic Granite Town Rail Trail, where you will race along the old railroad bed that was used in the late 19th and early 20th century to ship granite from Milford and ice from Lake Potanipo in Brookline to Massachusetts. The rails themselves were removed for scrap metal during World War II, but a few of the railroad ties are still in the ground and can be seen on the trail. Ghost Train leaves the station in mid-October when the local foliage peaks and the trail is bursting with color!

Ghost Train is proud to offer two new races in 2023! 30-Hour Ultramarathon (Saturday October 14th at 9am) 30-Hour Relay Race (Saturday October 14th at 9am) - NEW! Haunted Sunset 30-Mile Race (Saturday October 14th at 6pm) - NEW! 15-Mile Race (Sunday October 15th at 8am) 15-Mile Relay Race (Sunday October 15th at 8am) All the details about our races can be found on our website and in our Ghost Train Handbook .

No Refunds or Deferrals

If for any reason you are not able to attend the race, there are no deferrals and no refunds. Your entry fee will be a donation to the Brookline and Milford Conservation Commissions and used to improve the local trails for the community. Thank you for your donation!

The Ghost Train Rail Trail Race  race is for people who love running in the woods and are pretty self-sufficient and can take care of themselves. It is New Hampshire’s one and only 100 mile race, and is only one of two ultras in the Granite State! a race that welcomes new trail runners into the sport as well as provide a solid race for more experienced runners.

In the spirit of Halloween, expect to see some interesting things along the trail. We don’t call it the "Ghost Train" race for nothing. This is possibly the only race in the world that guarantees it will be haunted.

For the ultra, runners may run any multiple of 15 miles or 100 miles. The race also features a 15 mile run.

Course highlights

The race starts and finishes at Camp Tevya.

Fun halloween ultra.

Fills up fast. Well organized with pot luck food and a campfire on either end and the middle so you are never more than four miles to the next food stop. 30 hour race Great 15 mile out and back on a rail trail with a hill on one end to mix things up. Run as many 15 mile loops as you want. No DNFs! Halloween costumes jack o lanterns, and usually a real coyote pack howling at sometime in the night. Low registration fee is donated to local organizations. Race for time, or make it a annual gathering with running friends.

13.1 Mile Relay

Description.

The Parks & Recreation Departments of Hebron, Colchester, and East Hampton are collaborating along with the State of CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection to host our 20th Annual Ghost Run – On our beautiful 13.1 mile certified half marathon course. Runners registered by October 8th will receive a t-Shirt.  Registration deadline is 11/1. YOU MUST PREREGISTER, there will be no registration on race day! 

Early Bib pickup is scheduled for Friday November 3rd from 8am-3pm at the Burnt Hill Park Office Building - 148 East St. Hebron, CT

$50 Individual Runner / $100 Relay Team

COURSE: The race begins at Hebron Elementary School located on Route 85. Runners will run south on Route 85 and pick up the Air Line Trail behind Juliano’s Pools. The race continues on the Air Line Trail through Colchester and into East Hampton. At the Trail Head runners will continue on the trail to Watrous Street, to Summit Street. Follow Summit Street to Center Elementary School. Shuttle Buses will be available for all the runners in each direction. The trail is flat and is surfaced with packed dirt.

RELAY LEGS: #1. Start to Grayville Road, Hebron (3.6 mi.) #2. Grayville Road to River Road Overpass, Colchester (4.2 mi.) #3. River Road Overpass to Finish Line –Center School, East Hampton (5.3 mi.)

RELAY RUNNERS: Shuttle buses will drop you off and pick you up at designated locations (see shuttle bus schedule).

SHUTTLE BUS SCHEDULE: Bus 1 Depart Center School in East Hampton (7 Summit St.) at approx. 7:45AM transport runners to Hebron Elementary School (Rt. 85 in Hebron), stay at Hebron Elementary School and be the shuttle for Grayville Road Relay location, drop runners off and stay at this location until runners have reached this relay leg of the race. Leave Hebron Elementary School at 8:45AM just before the race starts and head to the Grayville Road location. Return runners back to Hebron Elementary school then to Center School in East Hampton. Stay at Center School and return runners to Hebron Elementary School on a rotating basis through the rest of the race as needed.

Bus 2 Depart Center School in East Hampton at approx. 8:10AM transport runners to Hebron Elementary School, Rt. 85 Hebron. Stay at Hebron Elementary School and be the shuttle for the River Road Underpass relay location. Leave from Hebron Elementary School at 9:05AM or just after the race starts. Proceed to River Road underpass, drop off runners and stay at this location until runners have reached this relay leg. Transport these arriving runners to Center School in East Hampton. Stay at Center School and return runners to Hebron Elementary School on a rotating basis as needed.

Bus 3 Depart Center School in East Hampton at approximately 8:25AM transport runners to Hebron Elementary School, rt. 85 Hebron, return to Center School and return runners to Hebron Elementary School on a rotating basis through-out the rest of the day as needed.

Bus 4 Shuttle from Hebron Elementary School to Grayville Road relay location. The bus will leave Hebron Elementary School just after the race starts. This bus will wait to leave Grayville Road until after the last runner crosses. Bus 5 Shuttle between Center School and Hebron Elementary School throughout the day starting at 8:00AM.

Ghost Train Trail Races

Ghost Train Trail Races is an exciting event with lots of participation and support. It will have an amazingly beautiful course because the time of the race coincides with the yellow leaf fall. Organizers say it’s going to be a haunted race … Participants will encounter a lake, several ponds and streams on the course. All proceeds go to local conservation commissions for trail improvements.

Everyone is invited to a delicious spaghetti dinner in the New England church basement on the Friday before the race.

There will be hats for sale at the race. Pacemakers are allowed on the course. To reduce waste, organizers are asking participants to bring a reusable cup or bottle to fill with water at the aid stations. Dogs are not allowed on the course or at the race venue.

There is no registration on the day of the race. Entry fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. The time limit for overcoming 30M is 13 hours, for the 15M – 4 hours. The weather in October can be just about anything. It can be sunny, or it can snow or heavy rain.

Time: 9:00am on Saturday to 3:00pm on Sunday (30 hour time limit)

Distance: Any multiple of 15 miles or 100 miles total.  Run 30, 45, 60, 75, 90 , 100, 105, 115 or more miles .

Choose your distance on race day- there are no DNF's!

All proceeds go to local Conservation Commissions to improve the trails!

30 Hour Relay Race

Team Size: From 2 to 7 people. (Runners are responsible for their own transportation if needed)

Haunted Sunset 30 Mile Race

Starts at Milford DPW (Milford)

Time: 6 :00 p m on Saturday to 7 :00 a m on Sunday ( 13 hour time limit)

Distance: 30 Miles

15 Mile Relay Race

There is no race day registration available for any of the Ghost Train Trail Races.

T here will be no refunds or deferrals, and bibs are non-transferrable.  If you register and can't attend for any reason, please consider your entry fee to be a donation to the Conservation Commissions of Brookline and Milford to help maintain and improve the trails.  We thank you!  Runners on the waitlist would consider it kind of you to withdraw if you can't run the race so that they can then enter.

No dogs or pets are allowed at Camp Tevya base camp, any aid stations, or any other areas of the course.  We are sad to say this as we love all animals, but our insurance doesn't cover pet incidents and with hundreds of runners, pacers, crews, volunteers and families we would hate for there to be any mishaps between pets and people.  (And we'd hate for any pets to be eaten by random demigorgon)  

Licensed service dogs are welcomed per state and federal laws and guidelines
