A Look Back at the Cast and Characters of ‘ER’
The medical drama ‘ER’ was a hit show that ran for 15 seasons from 1994 to 2009. It was one of the most popular shows on television and won numerous awards, including two Golden Globe Awards and 23 Primetime Emmy Awards. The show followed the lives of the doctors and nurses at County General Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. It was a groundbreaking show that featured an ensemble cast of characters who were all equally important to the story. Here’s a look back at some of the cast and characters from ‘ER’.
George Clooney as Dr. Doug Ross
George Clooney was one of the most recognizable faces on ‘ER’. He played the role of Dr. Doug Ross, a pediatrician who worked in the emergency room at County General Hospital. He was known for his good looks, charm, and dedication to his patients. He had a reputation as a playboy but eventually settled down with nurse Carol Hathaway (Julianna Margulies). His character left after five seasons but returned for guest appearances in later seasons.
Anthony Edwards as Dr. Mark Greene
Anthony Edwards played Dr. Mark Greene, an emergency room doctor who was initially introduced as a resident in season one and eventually became chief of emergency medicine by season six. He was known for his intelligence, compassion, and dedication to his work. His character faced many personal struggles throughout the series, including dealing with cancer and his divorce from wife Jennifer (Laura Innes).
Noah Wyle as Dr. John Carter
Noah Wyle played Dr. John Carter, an intern who eventually became chief resident by season six and then chief of staff by season ten. He was known for his intelligence, wit, and dedication to medicine but also had a bit of a rebellious streak that often got him into trouble with his superiors. He also had a romantic relationship with nurse Abby Lockhart (Maura Tierney).
Julianna Margulies as Nurse Carol Hathaway
Julianna Margulies played Nurse Carol Hathaway, an ER nurse who worked alongside Drs Ross and Greene in the early seasons before leaving to pursue her career as an administrator at County General Hospital in season four. She eventually returned to nursing in season eleven after her marriage to Ross ended in divorce. She was known for her intelligence, compassion, and dedication to her patients but also had her own personal struggles throughout the series including depression and alcoholism which she eventually overcame with help from her friends and colleagues at County General Hospital.
These are just some of the many characters that made ‘ER’ such an iconic show over its 15-season run on television. From George Clooney’s charming Dr Doug Ross to Julianna Margulies’ compassionate Nurse Carol Hathaway, each character brought something unique to the show that made it so beloved by viewers around the world.

Ghostbusters 5 cast guide: which characters are returning for the afterlife sequel.
The Ghostbusters 5 cast sees returning favorites from Ghostbusters: Afterlife, including Mckenna Grace, as well as legacy actors like Ernie Hudson.
The Ghostbusters 5 cast sees the return of fan-favorite actors like Mckenna Grace, Paul Rudd, and Ernie Hudson reprising their roles as popular characters from the earlier movies. When it hit theaters in 2021, Ghostbusters: Afterlife performed surprisingly well at the box office (via Box Office Mojo ), so Sony was quick to greenlight a sequel. Picking up where Ghostbusters: Afterlife left off, Ghostbusters 5 will explore the continuing adventures of a new generation of Ghostbusters, led by Egon Spengler’s grandchildren, Phoebe and Trevor. Like Ghostbusters: Afterlife , the movie will also see the return of some beloved legacy characters.
The script for the upcoming Ghostbusters 5 has been written by Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, who previously handled the screenplay for Ghostbusters: Afterlife . Jason Reitman also helmed Ghostbusters: Afterlife , yet Kenan is taking his turn in the director’s chair for Ghostbusters 5 while the former is attached as a producer. Ghostbusters 5 is the first Ghostbusters film with no involvement from the original movie’s director, Ivan Reitman, who passed away in 2022. But the franchise is in very safe hands with son Jason Reitman in control and a cast including such greats as Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, and Patton Oswalt.
Mckenna Grace As Phoebe Spengler
Mckenna Grace reprises her role from the Ghostbusters: Afterlife cast as Egon Spengler’s granddaughter, Phoebe. Grace first rose to prominence playing the younger versions of iconic characters, like Tonya Harding in I, Tonya , Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel , and Sabrina Spellman in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina . She quickly started earning major roles of her own, like Christmas Flint in Troop Zero , Paige Swanson in Young Sheldon , and Esther Keyes in The Handmaid’s Tale . The last of these earned Grace an Emmy nomination, making her one of the all-time youngest nominees.
Finn Wolfhard As Trevor Spengler
Finn Wolfhard also ppears in the Ghostbusters 5 cast, reprising his role as Phoebe’s socially awkward brother, Trevor Spengler. Wolfhard is best known for playing the quotable Mike Wheeler in Stranger Things and Richie Tozier in the Stephen King-based horror blockbuster It and its sequel, It Chapter Two . His voice roles include Pugsley Addams in The Addams Family and Candlewick in Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio . As a musician, Wolfhard joined The Aubreys in 2020 and previously performed as the lead vocalist and guitarist for the rock band Calpurnia.
Logan Kim As Podcast
Logan Kim reprises his role from Ghostbusters: Afterlife as Podcast, Phoebe’s friend and classmate who records all his conversations — and all his idle thoughts — for his podcast. Kim also plays Hershel Rhee, the son of Maggie Rhee and the late Glenn Rhee, in The Walking Dead spinoff series The Walking Dead: Dead City . His only other acting credit is his turn as the grandson in one episode of Home Movie: The Princess Bride , which was Ghostbusters: Afterlife director Jason Reitman’s fan-made remake of The Princess Bride , recorded in self-isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Celeste O'Connor As Lucky Domingo
Celeste O’Connor reprises their role in the Ghostbusters 5 cast as Trevor’s love interest, carhop Lucky Domingo. O’Connor first broke out with the role of Paloma Davis in the Amazon original movie Selah and the Spades . Their best-known roles are Millie’s best friend Nyla Chones in the body swap slasher Freaky , Daniel’s granddaughter Ryan in the drama film A Good Person , and Tessa’s friend Shannon in the sci-fi romance movie The In Between . They also played the teenage version of Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s character Abbie in the Netflix romantic dramedy Irreplaceable You .
Carrie Coon As Callie Spengler
Carrie Coon reprises her role from Ghostbusters: Afterlife as Egon’s estranged daughter — and Trevor and Phoebe’s mother — Callie Spengler. Coon is best known for her TV roles as grieving mother Nora Durst in HBO’s post-apocalyptic series The Leftovers and police officer Gloria Burgle in the third season of FX’s crime anthology series Fargo based on the Coen brothers movie . Her other film roles include Nick’s twin sister Margo in the psychological thriller Gone Girl , editorial writer Meg Greenfield in the historical drama The Post , and Thanos’s minion Proxima Midnight in the superhero epic Avengers: Infinity War .
Paul Rudd As Gary Grooberson
Paul Rudd returns in the Ghostbusters 5 cast as Gary Grooberson, a seismologist and science teacher. Rudd is best known for his roles as Scott Lang, a.k.a. Ant-Man, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Phoebe’s husband Mike in the final two seasons of Friends . He also played Danny in Role Models , Peter Klaven in I Love You, Man , and Brian Fantana in the Anchorman movies. Rudd has regularly worked with director Judd Apatow, playing David in The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Pete in Knocked Up and its spinoff, This is 40 .
Ernie Hudson As Dr. Winston Zeddemore
Ernie Hudson reprises his role as Dr. Winston Zeddemore, one of the original Ghostbusters. Outside the Ghostbusters franchise, Hudson is best known for his TV role as Warden Leo Glynn in the HBO prison drama Oz , as well as his recurring roles as Jacob in Grace and Frankie , Miles in Modern Family , and Detective Ridley in Desperate Housewives . His other movie roles include Reggie in The Basketball Diaries , Solomon in The Hand That Rocks the Cradle , and FBI Assistant Director Harry McDonald in the action comedy Miss Congeniality and its sequel.
William Atherton As Walter Peck
William Atherton appears in the Ghostbusters 5 cast as Walter Peck, the cynical EPA inspector who tried to shut down the Ghostbusters in the original movie. Atherton is also known for playing a different smarmy ‘80s movie villain: unscrupulous TV reporter Richard Thornburg in Die Hard , a role he reprised in Die Hard 2 . Atherton’s other well-known film roles include Professor Jerry Hathaway in the sci-fi comedy Real Genius , Nathan Randall in the direct-to-video superhero sequel The Crow: Salvation , and Bob Gminski in the film adaptation of The Pelican Brief .

It's been 35 years since Ghostbusters answered the question, "Who you gonna call?" when the sci-fi comedy hit theaters on June 8, 1984.
The movie follows three former parapsychology professors and a retired Marine who create a unique business to remove ghosts for their clients. Bill Murray starred as the group's leader Peter Venkman, while Dan Aykroyd portrayed Ray Stantz, Harold Ramis starred as Egon Spengler and Ernie Hudson played Winston Zeddemore.
The film also starred Sigourney Weaver, Rick Moranis, Annie Potts and David Margulies.
Following the critical praise and box office success of the 1984 film, Ghostbusters II debuted in theaters on June 16, 1989 with many of the original castmembers reprising their roles.
Aykroyd and Ramis penned the screenplays for both films, while Ivan Reitman directed.
The franchise has remained relevant over the years and has inspired a number of related projects, including the 2016 female-fronted reboot, which starred Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. That film, which was directed by Paul Feig, received intense online backlash from fans of the original films who didn't want to see Ghostbusters remade with female characters.
Jason Reitman, who is the son of original Ghostbusters helmer Reitman, is set to direct the latest film in the franchise.
Read on to see what the cast of Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II have been up to since Venkman, Ray and Egon opened their paranormal business.

‘Ghostbusters’ Cast: Where Are They Now? Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and More

When something’s lurking in your neighborhood, who are you going to call? The original Ghostbusters film not only catapulted its stars to comedic acclaim , but it also spawned multiple sequels and reboots .
After writer Dan Aykroyd read a parapsychology journal article, he came up with a movie story line about trapping ghosts .
“I thought, I’ll devise a system to trap ghosts … and marry it to the old ghost [films] of the 1930s,” the Canada native recalled to Vanity Fair in June 2014. “Virtually every comedy team did a ghost movie — Abbott and Costello, Bob Hope. I was a big fan of [them].”
The Saturday Night Live alum then enlisted Ivan Reitman as director, along with Bill Murray and the late Harold Ramis to round out the trio of hunters.
The 1984 film followed three parapsychologists who were forced out of their university due to lack of funding. They subsequently set up a unique ghost removal service in Manhattan to make ends meet.
“I wanted the film to be my New York movie ,” Reitman told Vanity Fair in June 2014, which Aykroyd agreed upon, calling it “the greatest city in the world, an architectural masterpiece [and] energy central for human behavior.”
Three decades later, the cast — including Aykroyd, Murray, Sigourney Weaver , Ernie Hudson and Annie Potts — joined forces once again for Entertainment Weekly ’s annual reunion issue in 2014 .

“I knew it was gonna be a huge movie,” Murray said at the cover shoot in November 2014. “At that point, we were still watching Yankee Doodle Dandy on TV, so I thought we had a shot. … We had that car. And in the uniforms, with the car, even the cops thought we were above them somehow [as they drove around] running red lights, [going the] wrong way on a one-way street.”
Several years later, Paul Feig rebooted the film’s premise with an all-female crew of supernatural sleuths, including Melissa McCarthy , Leslie Jones , Kristen Wiig and Kate McKinnon .
“To be able to hand Ghostbusters over to these incredibly talented women felt perfect, and it was time,” Weaver said of passing the torch to a new generation of stars during a July 2016 interview with Harper’s Bazaar . “There is such wonderful chemistry between the four of them. That does remind me of the boys because they were old friends and they had worked together a lot too . That kind of comedic pairing is just gold. You just turn the camera on and let them go at it.”
Weaver and Aykroyd even made a quick cameo in the reboot , telling the outlet, “I think the fans are going to be pleased by how we pop up. It’s just a very sweet movie but also very funny and kind of crazy. I think that’s a big part of what films can do — take us to another world.”
By November 2021, the original stars returned for more in the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel , which tells the story of a single mother who moves to a new town with her two kids. Soon after, they learn that they have a surprising connection to the OG Ghostbusters and discover the secret legacy that their grandfather left behind.

“It was full joy, wall to wall,” Aykroyd told The Hollywood Reporter that November of his return to the beloved character. “What a privilege to be asked back to do that. It was creative satisfaction working again with Ernie, Bill and Sigourney . If it weren’t for Jason [Reitman] and Ivan [Reitman], I don’t know if we would have had the magnificent cast. Some [previous] friction came from how long we had to wear those proton packs and the level of complaint we issued.”
