The family-friendly comedy features much of the cast of Horrible Histories as the ghosts that haunt the house, including Laurence Rickard as caveman Robin, Simon Farnaby as disgraced politician Julian Fawcett MP and Jim Howick as the overly polite scout leader Pat.
This latest series sees Alison and Mike open their much anticipated, bijoux B&B in the gatehouse at Button House. With their livelihoods depending on it being a success, the couple are pulling out all the stops to get the very best reviews, but things inevitably don't go quite to plan.
Ghosts season 4 introduces a new ghost into the ranks too, while Bridget Christie is set to make a return as Puritan Annie, who had previously been shown as having ascended to the afterlife. Below we'll explain how to watch Ghosts season 4 online from anywhere.

Ghosts is back on the BBC this weekend to bring some joy and laughter to the Friday night schedules, with the latest episodes set to be just as anarchic as ever.
The sitcom follows married couple Alison and Mike as they renovate a grand country manor that they unexpectedly inherited, while dealing with the fussiness of a group of ghosts that happen to be haunting the property.
This season, they'll try their hand at offering the place to holidaymakers on Airbnb, which is no small task in ordinary cases, but will prove particularly difficult for this remarkable home.
Ghosts star Charlotte Ritchie has also teased the introduction of a new entity, although there's no word yet on who's playing them nor whether they could become a permanent addition to the show.
Read on for all your essential information on Ghosts season 4.
Ghosts season 4 release date
Ghosts returns for a fourth season on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 8:50pm on Friday 23rd September 2022 , taking a prime slot right after the opening of this year's Strictly Come Dancing.
We've known more episodes are coming for some time now, with the news first announced by star Katy Wix during a guest spot on Distraction Pieces Podcast .
Later, the creators said in a statement: “We are thrilled to be returning to Button House for a fourth series. We have an exciting batch of new stories in store and can’t wait to share the next chapter.”
Filming commenced at West Horsley Place at the start of this year.
Ghosts Christmas Special 2022 release date
It has been confirmed that Ghosts will be warming up our festive celebrations once again this year, with a Christmas special due to air after the fourth season .
No air date or time has been set for the episode just yet, but previous Ghosts specials have been handed primetime slots in the schedules on 23rd December. This latest offering could well follow suit.
Last year's Christmas special was notable for having a major guest star in Jennifer Saunders, a vocal celebrity fan of the show, who played the mother of Lady Fanny Button (Martha Howe-Douglas).

Ghosts season 4 cast
The writing team behind Ghosts, comprised of Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond, are all returning for this latest series.
In addition to their roles in the Ghosts cast , they also dreamt up the concept and have previously worked together on CBBC's Horrible Histories and Sky One's Yonderland.
Meanwhile, lead cast members Charlotte Ritchie and Kiell Smith-Bynoe are also back as married couple Alison and Mike, alongside co-stars Lolly Adefope and Katy Wix as Kitty and Mary respectively.
Recurring guest star Geoff McGivern will reappear as intrusive neighbour Barclay Beg-Chetwynde, who has been both friend and foe at points over the past three seasons.
We don't expect Jessica Knappett's Lucy to return for more episodes in a possible season 4, as the mystery surrounding her character is wrapped up nicely by the end of the third outing.
Ghosts season 4 plot: what will happen?
While most episodes of Ghosts can be enjoyed as their own self-contained stories, there are some plot threads that carry over across multiple chapters of the sitcom.
From the beginning, we have been watching Mike and Alison's efforts to renovate the dilapidated Button House, with their hope to make it a beautiful place for events and accommodation.
This season, they have built a cosy outhouse which they plan to offer as a holiday stay via Airbnb (other brands are available), but of course, that won't be easy thanks to their ghostly tenants as well as their own personal insecurities.
Each season also brings fresh revelations about the lives of Button House's deceased inhabitants, revealing the circumstances of their deaths in stories that range from hilariously morbid to genuinely emotional.
More like this
Ghosts star Katy Wix told RadioTimes.com that she would like to learn more about how Mary came to be suspected of witchcraft – an accusation that ultimately saw her burnt at the stake in Stuart-era England.
"I’d love to find out what it is she did and why she was accused," the Stath Lets Flats star said. “It was probably something totally benign.
"There’s a lot of fun to be had there, isn’t there? You know, maybe she read a book. It’d be really fun to film but I think it would be also quite funny if it was just totally ambiguous what happened."
We have also learned that Ghosts season 4 will see the introduction of a new ghost , which the spirits of Button House will be eager to impress as a rare opportunity for fresh company.
Co-creator and actor Laurence Rickard told RadioTimes.com and other press that the writing team has been bottling up storyline ideas, so there's little chance of the comedy running out of steam.
He explained: “There are always ideas where we go, ‘that’s right, but not yet’. And obviously, you’re aware that you’re banking these things on a hope.
“Just cramming everything in, regardless of whether or not it earns its place, would be a shame," Rickard continued. "And so I think we put things in the bank hoping that there will be time to explore them in the future.”

One of the many feathers in its extremely feathered cap is that its Christmas specials have proved to be the only truly essential festive viewing left. Still, all good hauntings must come to an end, and this fifth series is the last.
In many ways, its end point is arbitrary. The formula is so good, and so well-oiled, that you get the sense it could have gone on for ever. There is a Simpsons-esque longevity built into its bones that would have been hampered only by its actors getting older, since the ghosts are supposed to remain as they were when they died. The only upside to the creators calling time on Button House now is that there is no danger of it outstaying its welcome.
There is a hint of what a future without Ghosts might look like early on in these final episodes, as Alison (Charlotte Ritchie) wakes up to a house without any ghosts in it. It is a reminder that this is how it must look to her husband, Mike, (Kiell Smith-Bynoe), who can’t see the ghosts at all. But it is only an April fool, a prank played on Alison by the ghosts who plainly adore her. She spends the first episode attempting to take her revenge, picking them off one by one, using scotch eggs, tattoos and balloons to target their weak points. The only nut she can’t crack is Pat, the scout leader, who is used to the horrors of teenagers en masse. “Been there, done it, got the T-shirt, mate,” he says; the way Jim Howick delivers the line had me in an inexplicable fit of giggles. The language is luscious, as always, particularly when it comes to Lady Button, who disapproves of Alison’s “new” tattoos. “My own kith and kin, branded like some lowly navvy, painted like a tawdry jezebel,” she hoots, ripely.
The episodes are beautifully structured, too. As Alison makes her way through the pranking list, Mike has to deal with a “loss adjuster” from the insurance company, there to investigate the Gate House fire. Naturally, all worlds collide. There is talk of selling the land, a ghostly gameshow, a mishap with a walk-in safe and, towards the end of the run, a secret that threatens to unsettle everything. There is also a lot of talk of Is It Cake?, which is, obviously, Kitty’s favourite show.
Ghosts is the ultimate in comfort television, without ever seeming as if it is trying too hard to be that. It is often moving, and can catch you by surprise. There’s nothing in this season with quite the same emotional impact as the departure of Katy Wix’s Mary, though the Captain’s backstory comes close. It is as silly as it is touching, but ultimately, every catastrophe or upset or chaotic decision ends with a gentle triumph, and every mess made by the ghosts or the humans becomes an opportunity to learn and grow. And still, it manages to avoid being cheesy.
There are bigger storylines here, as life changes for Alison and Mike, and decisions must be made about the future of the ever-crumbling Button House. We rarely get to see stories on TV about people struggling financially, in any ordinary sense. Most fictional characters seem to live in pristine Victorian semis with vast kitchen extensions, no matter whether they are an investment banker or a teaching assistant. And if they are evidently strapped for cash, it’s usually because they’ve gambled their lives away or rejected their former life as a gangland boss. While it’s a stretch to call Alison and Mike’s setup recognisable, what with all the ghosts, and the mansion, they are broke at a time when much of the country is feeling broke, too. Ghosts is often far more relatable than you would imagine for a show about historical dead people, and this adds to the notion that it really is a show for everyone.
There is a neatness to proceedings, too. Kitty, Humphrey and the Captain are given flashbacks to their deaths, completing the deck of backstories. I was wondering if the final episode would do something profound, like Blackadder or Derry Girls. I won’t give it away, but it sends itself off in a more humble style, with an episode that feels very much like an episode of Ghosts. It certainly doesn’t feel too final, just in case there is ever any desire to revive it. Television has grown very tense in recent years, but there is a lot to be said for TV that is sweet, funny, clever and warm. I hope that one day Ghosts comes back to haunt us.

How To Watch Ghosts Season 5
Watch ghosts season 5: synopsis.
It’s with mixed emotions we bid farewell to this brilliant BBC One sitcom, which saw cash-strapped couple Alison (Charlotte Ritchie) and Mike (Kiell Smith-Bynoe) inherit a house inhabited by a historical cross-section of ghosts, each with their own endearingly tragi-comic backstory. Now it’s their last hurrah, and we explain below how you can watch Ghosts Season 5 online and stream the final season from start to finish from anywhere.
Ghosts was an instant hit when it debuted in 2019: featuring a colorful group of singular spooks played to perfection by an incredible cast; giddily amusing, cosy, and containing only the occasional decapitation.
Among that gaggle of lost souls were chess-playing caveman Robin, Thomas, the Romantic poet infatuated with Alison, Georgian noblewoman Kitty, and a Tory MP who died doing what he loved – and it wasn’t attending PMQ’s each week at the House of Commons.
With their B&B in ashes and Alison and Mike weighed down by financial woes, Season 5 will find them trying to sell Button House land to international buyers – much to Lady Button’s po-faced disapproval.
Alison and the spectres’ April Fool’s Day hijinks get out of hand. But, most excitingly of all for fans, we could finally find out how the irrepressible Kitty met her untimely demise.
Follow our guide below, where we’ll explain how to watch Ghosts Season 5 online and stream every single episode of the final season now absolutely FREE.

Can I watch Ghosts Season 5 online in the US?
While the O.G. series of Ghosts is popular (an American version began airing here in 2021), it looks like a long wait before we can expect to see the fifth and final season in the States.
However, one benefit to come from the Writers Guild of America strike is that CBS are giving the UK version of Ghosts its cable debut, where it will air on beginning November 16. That’s to fill the TV void created by the strike, which halted production on Season 3 of the American Ghosts , starring Rose McIver and Utkarsh Ambudkar.
It’s unknown yet whether subsequent seasons of the O.G. show will find their broadcast home on CBS too.

Can I watch Ghosts Season 5 in Canada?
CBC Gem is the exclusive home of Ghosts in Canada. It may be a few months before Ghosts Season 5 lands on the platform though, given that Season 4 only was only added to the streamer four months after it aired in the UK. But you can watch all prior seasons here right now and completely free. All you need to do is create an account.
Can I watch Ghosts Season 5 in Australia?
As of yet there’s no release date for Season 5 of Ghosts Down Under. However, you can currently find seasons 1 to 3 available to stream on Stan. And they’re providing a Halloween treat by uploading Season 4 on October 17, too.

How to use a VPN to watch any stream
Created, written by, and starring the creative team behind Horrible Histories (2009-2014), Ghosts was an instant hit thanks to its whimsical humor, high gag rate, and eclectic collection of cohabiting spectres.
These include neanderthal man Robin (Laurence Rickard), a Georgian Noblewoman (Lolly Adefope), a closeted World War II officer (Ben Willbond), and pants-less Tory MP Julian (Simon Farnaby) – all tethered to the country estate of Button House and incessantly bending Alison’s ear.
With their B&B dreams in ashes after the fire, Alison (Ritchie) and Mike (Smith-Bynoe) are back to hustling to keep financially afloat. Might they be forced to leave their haunted home? Season 5 will also see the larger-than-life spooks enjoy some April Fool’s Day hijinks, as well as investigating the cause of Kitty’s death some 200 years ago.
Ready for the last gasp of this nearly departed show? Then read on as we explain how to watch Ghosts season 5 online and from anywhere in the world.

The Original UK Version of ‘Ghosts’ Is Coming to the US
Same story, different accents.
The Big Picture
- CBS is extending spooky season with the UK version of Ghosts , a comedy series about a girl who inherits a haunted mansion and turns it into a luxury hotel.
- Ghosts UK had a successful run on BBC One and inspired the American version, with the main difference being the episode count.
- Ghosts UK will wrap up with Season 5, while Ghosts US is facing delays due to the ongoing strike, resulting in the creative scheduling of the UK version on CBS.
CBS announced today that spooky season will extend for a couple of weeks on the network this Fall. That’s what’s going to happen when Season 1 of Ghosts starts to take over Thursday nights on broadcast American television starting on November 16. The “new” show is the British version of the comedy series that inspired the highly popular American version which also airs on CBS. The story is the same: A girl inherits a mansion and decides to transform it into a luxury hotel, without knowing that it’s haunted by a slate of ghosts from different eras.
Ghosts (the UK version) originally debuted on BBC One , and it proved such a huge success that it scored a remake almost instantly: The American version premiered just two years later. One of the biggest differences between both versions is that British television is used to a much shorter episode output: Season 1 of Ghosts UK has only six episodes, while its American counterpart did 18 in its first year. CBS is yet to disclose if they'll air the British series' seasons back to back, but it seems likely.
Ghosts UK is The Result of CBS Getting Creative Amid Strike
Additionally, Ghosts UK already has an ending in sight: Recently, it was announced that Season 5 will wrap up the story, which should end its run with 30+ episodes. Meanwhile, Ghosts US is gearing up to premiere Season 3, but the next batch of episodes is getting delayed due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike . The strike is also the reason why CBS had to get creative with its Fall season programming, with Ghosts UK getting a slot in prime time along with high-performing titles like Yellowstone and SEAL Team .
CBS is also pairing the two versions Ghosts : Every new episode of the British series will be followed by a rerun of past Ghosts US episodes , so fans will be able to compare both series – and especially how differently British humor plays out – as they air back-to-back.
CBS premieres Ghosts UK on November 16. You can watch a trailer below:
