How Long It Takes to Beat the Entire God of War Franchise

Players looking to experience the God of War series in its entirety, before Ragnarok arrives on PS5, will need to be prepared for an undertaking.

In September of 2020, PlayStation fans were likely shocked and thrilled as Sony Santa Monica Studios announced that the next game in the classic  God of War  franchise would be coming in 2021. The studio ran a small teaser trailer showing the well-known omega logo with the phrase "Ragnarok is Coming" as the final announcement in the PS5 Showcase Event , giving players a compelling reason to purchase the new console.

While no further information has been provided for the new  God of War   game, there are likely many players that would be interested in catching up on the journey of Kratos in the lead up to this title. Though  Ragnarok  is technically the fifth mainline title in the series, there are actually seven games in total for those wanting to enjoy the full breadth of the Spartan's trials and tribulations. Many could be wondering if a major time investment will be needed to enjoy the full God of War  story. However, players will find that this mountain is not as steep as they may originally expect.

God of War: Ascension

God of War: Ascension  is the first game in the chronological timeline of the series, taking place only six months after the tragic event that began Kratos' vengeance-filled journey. The PS3 title will have players battling the three Furies; Megaera, Tisiphone, and Alecto, as well as other monsters inspired by Greek myth like the manticore, in a title that will take players around 8.5 hours to finish.

God of War: Chains of Olympus

Up next, players will want to play the other PSP  God of War  game:  God of War: Ghost of Sparta .  Revolving around Kratos and the relationship with his brother Deimos,  Ghost of Sparta  serves as a direct prequel to  God of War 2 and reveals major details from the Spartans' lineage. To complete the main story of the game, players will likely invest around 6.5 hours and will be rewarded with greater context for the next two games in the series.

God of War 2

God of War 2   opens with the other Olympian gods having disdain for Kratos and his violence as the new God of War. Following an intense battle with an animated version of the Colossus of Rhodes, Zeus kills the Ghost of Sparta, but he is saved by the Titan Gaia who instructs him to seek out the Fates in order to turn back time and seek revenge. This vengeance-filled story takes about 12 hours to complete and leaves on a huge cliffhanger, as Kratos ascends Mount Olympus to slay the Gods.

God of War 3

God of War 3  is the final act of the classic  God of War  series. Over the course of 10 hours, Kratos makes his dangerous trek to find Zeus and kill him, along with any other God or Goddess that stands in his way. Considering the utter ruin that is displayed by the end of this game, it was assumed by many that Kratos' tale was at an end . However, 2018 saw the release of another game with a whole new mythos to explore.

God of War (2018)

God of War  on PS4 is the latest installment in the  God of War  franchise, and is a direct sequel to  God of War 3 . While it hasn't been stated just how long it's been since Kratos laid waste to Olympus and its denizens, it appears to have been long enough that the former Greek God of War was able to find love and begin raising a child, Atreus. The 2018  God of War  takes on the Norse pantheon of Gods, with Baldur serving as the primary antagonist  alongside many other important Norse figures such as Freya making an appearance as well.

The critically-acclaimed prequel to  God of War: Ragnarok   is by far the longest entry in the series as it gave players an open-world map to explore for the first time in the franchise, as well as adding more RPG-like elements. Completing the main story alone will likely take players around 20.5 hours. That being said, a full completionist run could look closer to 50 hours.

If players add up the amount of time it takes to complete only the main story of each of these seven titles, they are looking at about 72 hours of total playtime. For those looking to go the extra mile and do completionist runs of all the games, about 126 hours of revenge will have to be prepared for. However, considering the stage that has been set for  Ragnarok , this time should be worth it in the long-run.

God of War: Ragnarok may have felt like an epic experience but where does it actually rank in the series in terms of campaign length?

The God of War series is full of games that go all-out when it comes to action on the most epic scale and that makes it interesting to rank the titles by campaign length. Whilst the first God of War was one of the most important titles on the PlayStation 2, its high-adrenaline action was presented in a relatively compact package. Luckily, the games have been able to become even more expansive since then and have taken the player on journeys over twice the length of that first title.

When God of War: Ragnarök was released to critical acclaim last year as the longest game in the history of the brutal boss-slaying God of War franchise , it's easy to assume that each game has been getting longer over time, but that wouldn't quite be right. 10 God Of War: A Call From The Wilds (2018) - 45 Minutes

Rather than a full-scale game in the style of the main series God of War titles, God of War: A Call from the Wilds is a text-based adventure that was released to promote God of War (2018) before it came out later that year. Whilst it's a great supplement to the main experience for those truly invested in fan-favorite God of War characters like Atreus and Kratos, it's a lot shorter than their other adventures.

Clocking in at 45 minutes on average, God of War: A Call From The Wilds is a game that can easily be consumed in one go without too much of a commitment. Its story of Atreus and his first adventure in the Norse wilds might lack the ambition and complexity of longer titles, but it still makes for a touching experience that's all the better for its brevity.

9 God of War: Betrayal (2007) - 2 Hours

Not satisfied with conquering the console game market, the God of War series set out to take over the mobile game world as well with the now-unavailable God of War: Betrayal . In the game, Kratos is framed for the murder of Argos and forced to clear his name, and it's presented in a 2D side-scrolling style that's unexpectedly appropriate for the God of War series.

God of War: Betrayal lacks the hidden details of other God of War games but, at 2-4 hours, the campaign actually has some weight to it. Along with God of War: Chains of Olympus , God of War: Betrayal helped fill the gap between the second and third main series titles with a compelling bite-sized story. Given it's no longer available in stores, its short campaign is likely not that worth seeking out, however.

8 God Of War: Chains Of Olympus (2008) - 5.5 Hours

Being a hand-held title didn't stop God of War: Chains of Olympus from being an incredible hack-and-slash story experience to rival even the main series titles. With its story that pits Kratos against the dream god Morpheus and Persephone as they plot to destroy Olympus, it's considered one of the best games in the God of War series as well as one of the most ambitious games on the PSP.

However, the full-scale ambition behind the story didn't quite stretch to its length, which is significantly less than any of the main series as even a completionist approach shouldn't take much more than 9 hours. Though its shorter length might make it more suited to the hand-held format, players that try it now may well end up wishing it went on a little longer.

7 God Of War: Ghost Of Sparta (2010) - 6.5 Hours

Arriving in the short length of time between God of War 3 and God of War: Ascension , it's no surprise that God of War: Ghost of Sparta is often forgotten about. However, it also seemed to confirm that God of War was a video game series that could do no wrong as its awesome story that sees Kratos searching for his brother Deimos made up for a general lack of gameplay innovation from Chains of Olympus .

Whilst the campaign in God of War: Ghost of Sparta still doesn't quite reach the length of the main series titles, it still provides a significantly more sizable experience compared to its predecessor at 6.5 hours of playtime on average. Ghost of Sparta deserves a special mention for being the longest God of War experience to be found outside of the main PlayStation titles but it's still appropriately compact for a hand-held experience.

6 God Of War: Ascension (2013) - 8.5 Hours

Despite being the fourth main series title in the series, God of War: Ascension ended up slightly disappointing in comparison to its predecessors and its shorter length might have played a part in it being one of the more heavily criticized God of War titles . Though it was supplemented by multiplayer game modes, the story was considered to be a weakness of God Of War: Ascension .

Whereas story content can be subjective, its campaign still has to go down as the shortest in all of the main title God of War games at an average of just 8.5 hours. For those whose introduction to the franchise was in the form of the two most recent titles, even a playthrough that tried to take in all the side content would likely seem to be lacking in heft at just 9.5 hours.

5 God Of War (2005) - 9 Hours

The hack-and-slash title that started it all, God of War began the series on the right note with blistering combo-based combat and a memorable introduction to the vengeful war god Kratos. In general, the longest single-player games began emerging more recently as gaming technology improved, meaning it's likely the limitations of the PlayStation 2 contributed to God of War 's relatively short campaign.

Taking just 9 hours to complete on average, God of War 's campaign is the shortest of the original trilogy and less than half the length of either of the more recent titles. Given one of the biggest sources of praise was God of War 's pacing, however, it's arguable that the shorter campaign is actually part of the game's charm, doing a great job of managing to not outstay its welcome given the gameplay does have its annoyances.

4 God Of War 3 (2010) - 10 Hours

Whilst it would make the most sense if God of War 3 was the longest title when playing through the original God of War Trilogy , it surprisingly clocks in at slightly shorter than God of War 2 . Though it capped off the series perfectly with a brutal story and the best combat of the series at that point, it chose not to take advantage of the superior capabilities of the PlayStation 3 when it came to supporting bigger games.

With a story that takes 10 hours on average to complete, however, it's hardly a breezy experience and the non-stop violence of God of War 3 might be best enjoyed in short bursts. With a total of 18 missable trophies to collect, some of them tied to a higher difficulty, a completionist playthrough is a bit more sizable at an average of 17.5 hours of playtime on average.

3 God Of War 2 (2007) - 12 Hours

God of War: Ragnarök might divide fans in some ways but most agree that the sequel to 2018's God of War exceeds it in nearly every way and that was likewise the verdict of God of War 2 . Released during the end of the PlayStation 2's lifespan, it managed to cap it off with an intense story and gameplay that cut out all the minor annoyances of its predecessor.

God of War 2 unsurprisingly also outdoes the original when it comes to sheer length, with a campaign that can take an average of 12 hours to complete. With a satisfying learning curve to the action as well, the game feels perfectly paced meaning the extra few hours it has on God of War are hardly noticeable. When the combat is polished and the battles bigger than ever, most players wouldn't mind if it had been even longer.

2 God Of War (2018) - 20.5 Hours

While replaying GoW now reveals some harsh realities , there's still no denying that it was the absolutely massive revival that the franchise needed. With completely rebuilt combat compared to previous outings, that focuses on landing heavy satisfying blows and a touching father-and-son story that immediately won over fans, God of War brought the series into the modern era of gaming.

That was reflected in the game's length which, at 20.5 hours average completion time, makes it well over twice the length of its namesake. Story-based games are typically expected to be longer now but it's clear that God of War isn't a concept that's been needlessly stretched out either. From the start to the finish, there's a sense of cinematic purpose to every section of the game that easily justifies the longer playtime.

1 God Of War: Ragnarök (2022) - 25.5 Hours

Not only is the title an epic adventure on a scale not seen before in the series, but GoW: Ragnarök also has an attention to detail that makes its predecessors pale in comparison. In the game, the player visits all nine realms of Norse mythology, compared to six in 2018's God of War, and does battle with the likes of Thor and Odin in cinematic fights that form the highlights of God of War 's longest experience.

Whilst an average completion time for the campaign is around 25 hours, that's not taking into account the amount of extra exploring and side content that the player can take in which can add at least 10-15 more hours of playtime. Given how good the level design is and how memorable the characters are in God of War: Ragnarök , it would be a shame not to spend the time to take in everything the game has to offer.

God of War: Ghost of Sparta Review

Ready at dawn continues to push the psp to new heights.

Unbelievably, the developers at Ready at Dawn managed to top what they did with Chains of Olympus, delivering a longer, deeper, and more graphically beautiful game than even they thought was originally possible. Ghost of Sparta is, without a doubt, one of the best games available for the PSP. Just when I thought I had Kratos figured out, I’ve been given insight into another piece of his past that makes his anger much more understandable. The path less traveled as far as characters and locations makes Ghost of Sparta a very significant chapter in Kratos’ story. There’s nothing hugely different about the gameplay, but there really didn’t need to be. Combat works perfectly, and while I could have stood a bit more challenge in the puzzle department, that’s basically the same as saying I could have used a bit more chocolate sauce on my totally awesome delicious dessert.
