Most Haunted Places in Rhode Island

There certainly isn’t any shortage of ghost sightings and spooky tales in the historic state of Rhode Island. In fact, it a place that is chock full of countless captivating and creepy paranormal experiences.

Let’s take a look at 11 of the most haunted places in Rhode Island:

11. Fort Wetherill, Jamestown

Fort Wetherill in Jamestown, Rhode Island

Fort Wetherill is one of the most haunted places in Rhode Island and it is said to be haunted by a phantom dog that has been seen since back in the Revolutionary War era.

It is said that when the British took control of the Forty in 1776 they were terrorized by a black dog who prowled the entire Fort. In British folklore, a black dog is said to be an omen of death so they were understandably unsettled by his appearance.

He is still spotted on occasion at Fort Wetherill usually glaring at people before disappearing through a wall. He can also be heard growling, barking, and howling on occasion too.

10. Seaview Terrace, Newport

Seaview Terrace in Newport, Rhode Island

You might recognize the outside of Seaview Terrace since it was used for exterior shots in the gothic horror television show ‘Dark Shadows’.

However, the property doesn’t just look creepy, it is also considered to be one of the most haunted houses in Rhode Island.

The building has an interesting history. The house was originally built in Washington DC, but in 1907, liquor millionaire Edson Bradley decided to move his mansion to Newport, Rhode Island!

It was completely dissembled and relocated to the existing Seaview Terrace in Newport. The entire process took 2 years to complete and involved merging the two buildings into one. It later became an all-girls summer boarding school.

It is now said to be one of the most haunted places in Rhode Island with several ghosts in residence. The most prominent spirit said to haunt the property is the original owner’s wife Mrs. Bradley.

She loved her home and has no desire to leave it. She is often seen playing her favorite Estey organ while others have experienced various strange noises like phantom footsteps, disembodied voices, and banging.

There have also been dark shadows seen and jiggling door handles!

9. The Perron House, Burrillville aka The Conjuring House

The Real Conjuring House in Burrillville, Rhode Island

The Perron House is very famous thanks to the movie ‘The Conjuring’. The film was based on true events that occurred in the home of Roger and Carolyn Perron.

Not long after the couple and their daughters moved into the home they started seeing terrifying apparitions. Mrs. Perron once woke to find an old woman in a gray dress with her head hanging at an awkward angle standing over her bed!

Famed paranormal experts Ed and Lorraine Warren were called in and concluded that this was the spirit of Bathsheba Sherman a Satanist who sacrificed her own daughter to Satan before later hanging herself in a ritual to bind her soul to the property!

8. Belcourt Castle, Newport

Belcourt Castle in Newport, Rhode Island

Belcourt Castle is a mansion in Newport which is said to be haunted by a phantom monk. One of the most common reports of paranormal activity coming out of Belcourt Castle is in relation to two haunted chairs!

That’s right, if you happen to visit Belcourt Castle then you may want to take care where you sit because there are two haunted chairs in the mansion which are said to forcibly eject anyone who attempts to sit on them!

It has also been said that there is a haunted suit of armor in the house.

7. Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Exeter

Chestnut Hill Cemetery in Exeter, Rhode Island

Chestnut Hill Cemetery has gained a reputation as one of the most haunted locations in Rhode Island, largely thanks to the tomb of an alleged vampire, Mercy Lena Brown!

Mercy, her mother, and two of her siblings all died of consumption. This was during a period when there was a great deal of hysteria surrounding vampires in New England and rumors persisted that one of the Browns was one of the undead. This hysteria led to the families’ bodies being exhumed.

Mary and the others were decayed as would be expected, but Mercy’s corpse was perfectly preserved and her hair had even grown longer while buried. Her heart was instantly cut out and burned to stop her rising from the grave.

Since then Mercy’s ghost has been seen around the tomb wearing a dirty, ripped gown.

On one occasion a visitor to the cemetery managed to record Mercy’s voice in EVP form saying, ‘Please let me rest in peace’.

6. The Breakers Mansion, Newport

The Breakers Mansion in Newport, Rhode Island

Cornelius Vanderbilt had the stunning Breakers Mansion built in Newport during ‘The Golden Age’ (1900-1929) and to this day it remains one of the best examples of the era.

It has formal gardens, a private beach, and a stunning view of the Atlantic Ocean. It is now one of America’s largest National Historic Landmarks and one of the most haunted mansions in Rhode Island.

It is said to be haunted by the ghost of Alice Vanderbilt and her ghost has been seen regularly in the mansion since her death in 1934.

The description of her ghost is always the same and fits how she would have looked prior to her death.

The family living there now says that she has been a near-constant presence, but they will not allow any investigators access as they know who she is and do not wish to disturb her. It is her home every bit as much as it is theirs.

5. Nathanael Greene Homestead, Coventry

Nathanael Greene Homestead in Coventry, Rhode Island

Nathanael Greene Homestead in Coventry is the former residence of famed Revolutionary War General Nathanael Greene.

It is considered to be one of the most haunted buildings in Rhode Island thanks to a range of spooky activity including phantom footsteps, disembodied screams, and doors that open and close on their own.

4. City Hall, Providence

City Hall in Providence, Rhode Island

Providence City Hall is known to be one of the most haunted places in Rhode Island.

Staff have seen chairs moving by themselves, smelled cigar smoke and heard unexplained whispering in empty rooms.

The paranormal activity is said to be caused by the ghost of the late Mayor Doyle who is actually buried in the building.

3. The Ladd School, Exeter

The Ladd School in Exeter, Rhode Island

The Ladd School was founded back in 1908 as a school for the feeble-minded. Over the years it came to be home to criminals and other undesirable people who society felt would be best removed from the general population.

This included everything from the mentally ill to promiscuous women! The school became known for horrible and often immoral acts against those who were being ‘cared’ for.

This included forced sterilizations and other barbaric treatments. In addition to staff harming the patients, many of them committed crimes against each other as well.

This abandoned building is now known to be one of the most haunted abandoned places in Rhode Island.

It is common for electronic items to be drained of power and visitors have heard screams and voices coming from inside of the empty buildings.

2. Cumberland Public Library, Cumberland

The Cumberland Public Library in Cumberland, Rhode Island

Cumberland Public Library, also known as Edward J. Hayden Library, is said to be haunted by a phantom monk which makes a lot of sense given that the property was once a monastery.

One common report of paranormal activity in the library is that books have a habit of moving from one place to another mysteriously!

Many of the people who live locally actually believe that it is not just the mansion itself that is haunted, but the entire surrounding area.

They believe that it is haunted by the spirits of nine militiamen who are said to have been flayed there by Native Americans.

Could the disembodied screams be those militiamen reliving their torture?

1. The Biltmore Hotel, Providence STAY HERE

The Biltmore Hotel, Providence

The Biltmore Hotel in Providence is said to be one of the most haunted hotels in Rhode Island.

It was named as America’s most haunted hotel in 2000 and was apparently the inspiration for Robert Bloch’s Bates Motel and played a role in Stephen King’s creation of the Overlook Hotel in his book The Shining.

When you look into the hotel’s history it is easy to see why!

When The Biltmore Hotel was first built it was backed by prominent Satanist Johan Leisse Weisskopf. It is said that in the early years there were many Satanic rituals conducted on the property including some involving sacrifices.

The hotel also became a hot spot during Prohibition and a number of high profile murders took place amidst the rowdy parties involving police officers and even the mayor.

All of this has led to a range of paranormal activity. Guests often hear the sounds of rowdy parties coming from empty rooms long after the hotel bars have closed!

One of the strangest reports connected to the hotel is that from time to time guests will simply vanish during the night!

This started in 2008 when new owners boarded up the basement ritual rooms in an attempt to clean up the hotel.

Modern Satanists claim that this is because the rituals were actually for purification and were keeping the evil spirits at bay!

My girlfriend and I make it our mission to hit every haunted house in RI for October, and this one is definitely in the top 3. The bus ride is very cool and the actual attraction itself is very well done. The actors are great and the length is pretty long, which is always a plus. The line was short, overall great experience, definitely coming back.

Photo of Cory G.

Line was really long, which was expected. However, once inside, it was horrible. There was maybe a total of 5 actors that our group came into contact with while in the woods. Setup was decent but it was anything but scary, it was complete silence at several parts, and anticipation was high as we turned corners in hope of being scared but it was as if everyone who worked there took the night. Was highly disappointed, especially for a Saturday night.

Best Haunted Houses In Rhode Island

Sadly, some great haunted houses in Rhode Island closed as a result of the global pandemic, and as of 2022, there aren’t as many options as there have been in the past. But, fear not (pun intended)! There are still some amazing and scary haunted houses around the Ocean State that are sure to make you jump.

The haunted houses in Rhode Island are some of the best in all of New England.

Haunted Houses Near Providence, Rhode Island

1. haunted labyrinth – cranston, ri.

Distance From Providence: 10 Minutes

Not only is this one of the scariest, it’s also the longest running of all the haunted houses in Rhode Island, as well as all of New England! A combination of a haunted house and an indoor maze, the Haunted Labyrinth takes about 15 minutes to walk through, and is scary enough to make adults jump, and also provides just the right amount of spookiness for children to attend (though, I recommended that children be aged around 8 and up).

Tickets can be purchased online in advance to avoid waiting in line upon arrival. This attraction is close to the Scary Acres Haunted Corn Maze, so these two can easily be done in the same night.

2. 13th World – Cumberland, RI

Distance From Providence: 20 Minutes

Often regarded as the scariest of all the haunted houses in Rhode Island, 13th World is sure to deliver on the goosebumps. Each year, 13th World creates a new experience, so no two haunted houses are the same from year to year. Taking about 25 minutes to walk through, this experience ushers you on a spooky journey through the woods at night, and most people agree that this is a pretty intense haunted house.

Tickets can be purchased online in advance, and this attraction is recommended for those aged 12 and up. If you’re looking to make an evening of your visit, they also have a second location in Palmer, MA, which is only an hour away from the Cumberland, RI location. Each location offers a different experience, so for those looking for maximum scares this season, this is something to consider.

3. Slater Park Haunted Tunnel – Pawtucket, RI

Distance From Providence: 15 Minutes

A great haunted house in Rhode Island to consider is the Haunted Tunnel in Pawtucket, which offers two spooky experiences in the same location. Begin your evening by walking through the concrete tunnel with 9 different scary rooms to enter if you dare, and then finish your night in the outdoor park’s cemetery and haunted corn maze.

This haunted house recommends that children be 10 years of age or older.

Be sure you're prepared before visiting the haunted houses in Rhode Island - many of them are known for being some of the scariest in the area.

Best Haunted Hayrides In Rhode Island

4. seven cedars farm haunted hayride – smithfield, ri.

One of the best haunted hayrides in Rhode island is the Seven Cedars Farm Haunted Hayride . This event typically opens the first weekend of October, and takes you through over 20 acres of twisty wooden land with lots of things that will be going bump in the night. Each year, they add new scary parts to the ride, and change a few things around, so it’s definitely worth doing again if this is one you’ve experienced before.

At the farm, food and drinks are available for purchase either before or after your ride.

Tip : For another haunted hayride option just 30 minutes away, just keep reading below!

Haunted Corn Mazes In Rhode Island

While the Slater Park Haunted Tunnel mentioned above also has a haunted corn maze as part of their attraction, another option is Scary Acres in Cranston.

5. Scary Acres – Cranston, RI

One of the best haunted corn mazes in Rhode Island is the Scary Acres corn maze. Scary Acres actually offers both a haunted hayride and a haunted corn maze for the perfect night of freights. You’ll start by taking the hayride through the haunted woods where zombies and werewolves are said to hunt for their victims. Then, you’ll grab a flashlight and make your way through the haunted corn maze with only your light to guide you.

Tickets can be purchased online in advance. This attraction is close to the Haunted Labyrinth, which is also in Cranston, so you can easily visit both in one night for the ultimate haunted experience!

Tip : This attraction can easily be combined with the Seven Cedars Haunted Hayride, and is only 30 minutes away.

You'll find more than eerie jack-o-lanterns at the haunted attractions on this list.

Haunted Attractions In Newport, RI

6. newport, ri haunted ghost tour.

While Newport doesn’t have any haunted houses, they have something that could be even scarier – a haunted ghost tour based on actual historical events and paranormal activity. This walking tour takes place at night, and you’ll be led through the most historical streets of Newport by your guide and lantern light while you learn the details of the city’s sordid past, as well as the ghost stories that continue to haunt the neighborhoods.

Real Haunted Places In Rhode Island You Can Actually Visit

If you’ve already experienced the best haunted houses in Rhode Island and are looking to shake things up a bit, or if you’re just looking to visit as many haunted places as you can this Halloween season, I’ve got you covered! Below is a list of the best haunted places in Rhode Island you can actually visit.

7. The Conjuring House – Harrisville, RI

One of the most haunted houses in Rhode Island is the Farm on Round Top Road, but more commonly referred to as the Conjuring House. If you’re a fan of horror movies, you may have seen The Conjuring , which was a fictional representation of what happened to the family who owned this house in the 1970s. While the movie wasn’t a documentary, it was based on very real events.

This house was built in 1736 and has a long-documented history of deaths, many of which were mysterious or tragic. When the Perron family moved into the house in 1970, they began to experience strange and unexplained noises, felt cold and horribly smelling presences, and even experienced beds levitating from the ground and apparition sightings. The house is so haunted, in fact, it was investigated by famed paranormal experts Ed & Lorraine Warren.

But what does all this have to do with you visiting? Well, if you’ve ever wanted to connect with the spirit world, this is the house you want to go to, and the current owners offer tours and overnight paranormal investigative stays. Click here for more information , and just keep in mind, the Conjuring House is not for the faint of heart.

8. Chestnut Hill Cemetery – Exeter, RI

Chestnut Hill Cemetery is known as one of the most haunted places in Rhode Island you can visit because of one particular woman who’s buried here – Mercy Lena Brown. Many thought Mercy to be an actual vampire when she was alive in the 1800s during a time in history called the New England Vampire Panic, and she died at the age of 19 from tuberculosis.

Now, many have claimed to see her spirit haunting the cemetery, often standing close to her own tombstone. If you’re hoping to see Mercy for yourself, you’ll need the courage to visit her grave at Chestnut Hill Cemetery at night.

9. The Graduate Hotel – Providence, RI

The Graduate Hotel in Providence is said to be one of the most haunted hotels in New England. Built in 1922, and also on the National Register of Historic Places, this hotel has a pretty scary past. Originally financed and owned by a known Satanist, many animal sacrifices, violent rituals and murders have allegedly taken place inside the building.

Over the years, many guests and staff members have claimed to have heard loud footsteps and clinking glasses in empty rooms, which likely has ties to the hotel having been a speakeasy during the prohibition era. Others have claimed to see the ghost of one of the hotel’s most famous suicide victims falling outside their window, only for no body to see seen on the ground moments later.

The Graduate Hotel is currently open for overnight guests, and if you’re hoping to connect with the spirit world, you may want to consider making a reservation. Please note: It’s important to not disrupt the hotel’s day-to-day operations during your visit, and to be respectful of other guests and hotel staff while you look for any haunted happenings.

Click here to book your stay at the Graduate Hotel in Providence!

10. The Harborside Inn – Block Island

Block Island is one of my favorite New England summer destinations, but it also comes with a very spooky past. Between shipwrecks and villainous, real-life pirates, many locals have claimed to see ghosts all over the island, including ghost ship sightings right off the shoreline.

But if you’re looking to visit one of the most haunted locations, you’ll want to book a stay at the Harborside Inn, and specifically, room 302. Visitors that have stayed in this room have claimed to see a woman dressed in black entering and existing. Staff members at the hotel have also claimed to feel hands grabbing their waists when no one else was around.

11. Fort Wetherill – Jamestown, RI

Fort Wetherill provides beautiful views of Narragansett Bay, but it’s also one of the most haunted places in Rhode Island that you can visit. The very first ghost legends stemmed from reported sightings of a ghost dog with red eyes and fangs during World War I. Since then, many have claimed to hear loud barking and growling noises when no other dogs have been present. Some have even claimed to have seen it walking through the walls of the tunnels inside the fort.

Claims of paranormal activity at Fort Wetherill were further fueled in 1985 when the bodies of 4 young women were found nearby, and since their murder is still unsolved, many claim that they either made eye contact with the ghost dog, or that other unexplained paranormal activity is responsible for their death.

If you decide to visit Fort Wetherill for yourself, be prepared for lots of chills and goosebumps.

12. Belcourt Castle – Newport, RI

Many of the famous Newport mansions have stories of haunted happenings, but one of the most haunted is the Belcourt Castle. Open to the public during the day for tours, many visitors and staff members have reported not being able to sit in two specific chairs (and being tossed out of them if they tried!), as well as a suit of armor that moves its head and arms when no one else is around.

Many others have reported seeing apparitions of women in ball gowns, as well as a monk dressed in a brown robe that strolls through the entire property.

13. White Horse Tavern – Newport, RI

The oldest tavern in the U.S. is also, unsurprisingly, the most haunted. While you’re sure to have a wonderful dining experience at this beautiful setting, you may also experience some unexplained happenings. Visitors and staff members have claimed over the years to feel taps on their shoulders when no one else could have done it, footsteps in empty rooms, and apparition sightings of old sailors and men dressed in traditional Colonial clothing.

Rhode Island is home to many ghost stories, and lots of haunted places you can actually visit.

Hometown hauntings: tower hill road, have you seen a ghost on tower hill road, sara bagwell , patch staff.

haunted hill ri

A trip down Tower Hill Road in Bristol in the dead of night is sure to make the hair on your neck stand up, but is there really something out there waiting in the dark?

Tower Hill Road is said to be haunted by Native Americans who were killed during the King Philip War in the 1600s. Believers say ghosts can be seen charging over the hill and drums can be heard in the area of the white "X" that is painted on the narrow road.

Connie Ouellette, a ghost hunter, psychic and owner of Magick Mirror Gift Shop in Bristol, took a trip down Tower Hill Road a few years ago and said there was something there alright, and she didn't like what she felt.

Find out what's happening in Bristol-Warren with free, real-time updates from Patch.

"I remember walking halfway down the road and just stopping," Ouellette said. "I didn't want to go any further. All I could feel was chaos and death like I was in harm's way. I felt like if I stayed there or kept going that something could happen."

Ouellette said that in her years of ghost hunting, she has rarely felt that same fear, enough to force her to leave the supposedly haunted area.

"I don’t know the history of that road, but you can feel negative energy and bad spirits there," she said. "It felt like something bad had been done there. Something inhumane and it felt like there were many deaths."

Ouellette is not the only one who has had a frightening experience on Tower Hill Road. Dyanne Gibree of Bristol admits to having an open mind to paranormal activity and recalls one of her trips down Tower Hill Road with her daughter and some friends.

"We were parked on the road and the radio was acting funny," Gibree said, admitting that there was bad reception in that area anyway. "But me and a car full of giggling girls sat there in the dark with the windows open when we noticed the most peculiar fog that just followed the tree line. When it got to where the car was, it came up and almost made a form next to the passenger-side door and went back down. Then, all of a sudden, the girls in the back of the van started screaming because they saw someone looking in the back window. The poor girls were so scared so I had to drop them all off at home, but when we opened the door, there were hand prints on the back of the window. It was creepy, but absolutely awesome."

Gibree said not all experiences on Tower Hill Road are as active as the one she recalls.

"There were many times we went down there and just sat, but nothing happened," she said. "If you want to see something, you have to be open to it. But you also have to realize that just because you don't see or hear something the first time, doesn't mean it's not out there."

The Mysterious Rhode Island Road You Absolutely Must Drive At Least Once

More by this Author

Rhode Island is one of America’s oldest states… and with that honor comes a rich history loaded with folklore and creepy tales. Our state is home to haunted hotels, haunted mansions, spooky cemeteries… and even, it seems, a haunted road. There’s no denying that this one road in Cumberland has quite a bit of reported paranormal activity.

haunted hill ri

Of course, it’s impossible to say whether or not this road is actually haunted, and how many of these accounts are mistakes or exaggerations. Still, considering these reports from locals have been happening for decades, it’s safe to say there might be something to those claims. We recommend all Rhode Islanders drive this road at least once (preferably at night) to decide for themselves.

I made my next door neighbor scream with this motion activated Grim Reaper

I may never be able to sleep soundly again

Product image of 6-Foot-Tall Motion Activated Hunched Skeleton Reaper

This 6-foot-tall Grim Reaper is positively spook-tacular!

I live in a part of Los Angeles that is heavily populated by art department workers. What that means is, the Halloween decorations bar is high. If you can dream it, they can make it. So, in order to be the “fun parent” I was definitely going to need some help.

What is the Haunted Hill at Fraser Hill Farm?

A golden puppy looks at an enormous grim reaper skull head that sits on a lawn.

While confused, no pups were harmed in the assembly of this Halloween decoration.

Haunted Hill Farm has everything from harvest-themed decor and slightly spooky stuff for those who like their scares on the milder side to truly terrifying Halloween decorations that will have you sleeping with the light on. The prices run the gamut, so there is something for everyone.

What did we order?

A Fraser Hill Farms Halloween wreath, made of vine with haunted houses, tombstones, and black spiders

They have scary stuff, but they also have mildly spooky stuff.

What did we think of Fraser Hill Farm Haunted Hill Farm?

The wreath was absolutely delightful. I opened the box and hung it, and it’s been enjoyed by friends and family for weeks. We’re impressed with the hunchback Grim Reaper too—we've named him Gary and he is now a beloved member of our family.

Product image of Haunted Hill Farm 15-In. Natural Grapevine Wreath with Spiders, Tombstones, and Haunted Houses

We love the Tim Burton-esque style of this wreath.

Assembly was straightforward

A half-built 6-foot tall Grim Reaper stands hunched in a yard. A treehouse is in the background.

Assembly wasn't as tough as an Ikea bookshelf, but it took two people.

It took me and my husband about 40 minutes to assemble Gary the Grim Reaper together. If you’re the type to read through directions (my husband), it took a diligent approach but was fairly simple overall—though, since it’s 6 feet tall, you definitely need two people to put it together.

The product is spook-ta-cular!

Overall, the product is pretty darn impressive. We now have a group of dads that like to marvel at it in our driveway.

Standing at 6 feet tall, we’ve balanced it to look over our fence. The motion-activated response causes passersby to jump, which is exactly what Halloween decorations are all about. It’s sturdy and spooky. Its glowing eyes will make you shudder and its all-too-real and ominous voice will make your skin crawl. My kid and the art department folk in my neighborhood are delighted.

Product image of Agptek Smoke Machine

Add a smoke machine for an added spooky effect!

Do we recommend shopping at Fraser Hill Farm Haunted Hill Farm?

A 6-foot-tall Grim Reaper looking over a fence with glowing green eyes

This is honestly the coolest animatronic Halloween decoration I've ever seen.

Yes, we do. Gary the Grim Reaper scares me every time I drive up my driveway and every time I back down it. My kid is happy, I’ve got cred with the art department people, and a toddler in a wagon even called Gary “cool.”

The stuff Fraser Hill Farm makes is awesome. If you want to be the “fun” parent, or you just want to take your Halloween decorations to the next level, we think you’ll love the stuff you find at Haunted Hill Farm. If you didn’t like decorating for Halloween before, this is about to show you how fun it can be.
