The building was once Dent Public School, and lore says it closed after many children went missing between 1942 and 1955. The story says parents stormed the building in anger, and found the children dead in the basement. The janitor was to blame. While there are no records to back this up, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported the school, along with one another, closed in 1949 and the students were moved to another school.

The ohio state reformatory.
This haunted attraction has quite the backstory. The Ohio State Reformatory was in operation from 1896 to 1990, when it was ordered to close down stemming from prisoners’ class action lawsuit, stating the prison was overcrowded and inmates were housed in inhumane conditions. The prison has witnessed hundreds of deaths, and a riot that involved the death of two prison guards.
It's also been an attraction for Hollywood, having once been a backdrop for movies like Shawshank Redemption. When it's not offering tours or putting on an event in honor of Shawshank, it transforms into a haunted house filled with zombies, witches and a screaming queen.

New survey finds Ohio leads nation in the number of Halloween haunts and attractions

There's an old saying that Ohio is the heart of it all.
Turns out it is a tell-tale heart.
It seems when it comes to lovers of demented clowns, monsters, witches and goblins, Ohio leads the nation in Halloween haunts and attractions.
A recent survey of haunts nationwide by The Scare Factor − an Indiana-based haunted house enthusiast group whose members go out and find and rate such attractions all across the country − found that Ohio has more than anyone else.
Tyler and Nora Proffet said they scour the internet and — along with some help of fellow haunt enthusiasts and even owners of haunted houses and attractions — compile a list of what's available to visit in each state.
These destinations can be as elaborate as the Halloween events at Kings Island and Cedar Point with their multiple haunts to over-the-top neighborhood displays like the Haunt on Williams Street in Conneaut.
And when the last ghoul was counted, Tyler said, Ohio topped the nation with 130 haunted destinations, followed by California's 123 and Pennsylvania's 102.
Tyler said Ohio has become a tourist destination for Halloween enthusiasts looking for high-quality scares.
Why are there so many haunted houses in Ohio?
Ohio has a rich history of haunted houses.
Some of the longest continuously running haunts in the country are located in the state.
The venerable Akron Haunted Schoolhouse is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and not far away the Hudson Haunted House has been raising money for the Jaycees there for some 53 odd years.
USA Today picks: Embrace the spooky season at these top spots for Halloween fun
Tyler Proffet said the Midwest has always had a love affair with haunted houses and Ohio has led the pack.
"Ohio just really has a really strong Halloween culture," he said. "Haunted houses are just wildly loved in the Midwest."
And this proliferation of early such haunts in Ohio ultimately led to more and more enthusiasts getting the bug and opening their haunts.
What are the best haunted houses in Ohio?
Everyone has their preferences when it comes to what makes a great haunted house.
But Tyler Proffet said his team of 70 or so enthusiasts who go out and review haunts all over the country have some things that they look for when picking the best ones.
They assign a number grade for everything from the quality and quantity of the actors to special effects to the level of suspense to the scare factor.
Tyler said they even factor in other things like entertainment value and customer service.
Here are the Top 10 haunts in Ohio as ranked by The Scare Factor.
- Face Your Fears Hotel of Terror in Springfield
- Fear Columbus .
- Carnage Haunted House in Columbus
- Factory of Terror in Canton
- Blood Prison in Mansfield
- The Dent Schoolhouse in Cincinnati
- Wells Township Haunted House in Brilliant
- The Haunted Hoochie in Pataskala
- The Haunted Hydro in Freemont
- Akron Haunted Schoolhouse
What's new at Ohio haunted houses?
The dynamic pricing that started a few years ago is continuing and spreading to haunts across the state.
The busier the night and the closer to Halloween you get, the prices at many haunts are more expensive. A number of haunts are either requiring or encouraging advance reservations.
Another growing trend in Ohio is to add things to keep the customer entertained not only inside of the haunt but afterward too.
Tyler said more and more haunts are adding everything from bars to food trucks to escape rooms.
"Guests are looking for more things to do at a haunt for an entire night," he said.
More: When is Halloween 2023, and how long has the holiday been celebrated? You'll be surprised.
Like other businesses, Ohio's haunted houses are having to get a bit more creative when it comes to staffing the needed ghosts and goblins.
Tyler said more and more haunts are adding mechanical and animated scares to fill the void left by fewer available workers.
This can be hit and miss, he said, as these scares have be positioned just right to elicit a good scream.
Many haunts have also reconfigured their layouts so actors can jump out from as many as four different hidden spots to scare guests to fill the void left by fewer workers.
Tyler said haunts are also turning to hi-tech gadgetry like lighting and sounds to amp up the creep factor.
A new twist this year that seems to be a growing trend, he said, is the addition of video screen effects and even projection mapping inside of haunts.
But at the end of day, Tyler said, the best scares are the old fashion ones offered by live actors jumping out from the darkness − preferably armed with a chain saw.
"You always have to have a human element in the haunt," he said. "You have to have live actors."

Boot Hill Cemetery – This long-forgotten and neglected cemetery was the site of many grave robberies before cadavers could legally be used by medical schools. The cemetery rested in peace for a number of years until a group of boys went to the cemetery to dig up a body as part of a club initiation. They began to dig, only to hear mysterious noises coming from the nearby brush and small rocks began to rain from the sky. The boys ran from the cemetery without reaching their goal.
Avon Lake
Avon Lake High School – The ghost of a former custodian named Clark Danbury, who suffered a terrible death in the early 1900s, is said to haunt the school. His ghost has been seen in the auditorium where loud banging noises are heard and mysterious lights are seen. The custodian is said to continue his work from beyond the grave.
Avon Lake Movie Theater – The theater is haunted by a projectionist who legend says died by either hanging himself or in a car accident. At any rate, people have reportedly heard strange sounds coming from the projection rooms and movies have been known to start and stop on their own. A former employee claims as she was cleaning after hours one night, she saw a strange man in the projection room. No one was found upon inspection. (Credits: Heather)
Columbia Station
Columbia Cemetery – This cemetery on West River Road is divided into a newer section and an older section. A little girl has been seen in the newer section skipping to a tombstone where she kneels down and disappears.
Myrtle Hill Cemetery – The cemetery that sits on top of Myrtle Hill contains an old tombstone where witches were supposedly buried. A large marble ball that marks the grave has a warm feel and gives off a strange mist all year long.
Allied Waste – Employees have reported seeing dark, shadowy figures in the building. Doors open and close without explanation and lights turn on and off. Footsteps have been heard upstairs when no one else is in the building. Crashing sounds and bumping noises have also been heard. Employees have dubbed the ghost “Frank.”
Cascade – It is said that if you go up on the rocks at night, you can see a fire with people around it. You can hear howling and screaming by the falls. Reports of shadowy figures on the swings are common.
Cascade School – This school is supposedly haunted by an unknown spirit. It is said to slam doors shut for no apparent reason. (Credits: Chelsie Giar)
Cottesbrooke Curve – On the night of July 16, 1903, E.L. Gavin was killed in a horrible trolley wreck on the Cottesbrooke curve. For many years after, trolley workers passing through the area where the accident occurred reported seeing a shadowy figure standing in the middle of the track, only to disappear when the headlight shined on it. Other workers reported seeing and/or hearing an oncoming trolley car, only for it to disappear. Today the area is along Oberlin Elyria Road between Russia Road and Lagrange Road.
Elyria High School – It is rumored that the tunnels beneath the school are haunted, although no one is sure why. Paranormal activity has been reported in the Washington building and a large hot spot has been felt in the auditorium. Security guards have reported seeing the image of a person running down the hallway on their camera monitors at night. The guards check all doors and windows, finding them all locked and no one else in the building. (Credits: Jessi)
Franklin Elementary School – Employees at the school have experienced strange things during the day. Mysterious music and talking can be heard, but the source is never found. A woman wearing a “Satan-type” dress has been spotted as well. (Credits: Christine Brown)
Highway 113 Pond – Witnesses driving past this man-made pond have reported seeing a glowing human-shaped figure floating above the middle of the pond, walking in mid-air, and often staring at the passing cars.
Saint Agnes Church – Neighbors of the church say the place is haunted. People who ride bicycles near the church have been knocked off of their bike by an unseen force. Bats are said to fly around the top of the church all year round. (Credits: Chelsie Giar)
Vermont Avenue – Witnesses walking down Vermont Avenue in Colonial Oaks mobile home park around 3:00 AM have reported the sound of gunshots near the home where a family was murdered years ago. (Credits: John D.)
Duane Building – This 1901-era building known as “The Arcade” is said to be haunted. Former residents have smelled the scent of flowers where a flower shop had once been located. Others have smelled cigar smoke in an area where people used to gather to wait for the streetcar after shopping. A ghostly woman has been spotted several times inside the building. A fire struck the old, decaying structure in 2002. It was believed that squatters accidentally ignited the blaze on the third floor while trying to stay warm. At least one witness saw “figures of men” standing in the third floor windows during the fire, but no one was inside the building. The building has since been restored with new storefronts and apartments. It is unknown if the new occupants have experienced anything out-of-the-ordinary.
G Street Park – Supposedly a railroad spike that was removed from a hole released spirits into the park. The figure of a ghostly woman has been seen around midnight near the spot of the hole. Screaming and yelling are heard throughout the night.
Hawthorn Boone School – It is said that the ghost of an old janitor haunts the school. In life, the janitor used to ride a bicycle in the school, ringing the bell. The sounds of his bell can still be heard.
Longfellow Elementary School – The area around this school is reportedly haunted. Screams can be heard in the area in the early morning hours and lights flicker in the old building, even when nobody is there. Figures of children walking and a slender adult woman have been seen staring out of the window. A very tall, dark figure has also been spotted in the park and often vanishes upon being spotted. (Credits: Kailey and Brandy)
Old Lorain High School – One could hear basketballs bouncing and people talking on the second floor gym when no one was there. The locker rooms were located beneath the gym and when the sounds were investigated, no one was around. There was a “yellow brick road” down in the tunnel. Witnesses reported the feeling of dread and not being alone when in the tunnel. This was especially true due to all of the old black and white photographs that hang on the walls, staring into the tunnel. (Credits: Ashley)
SkateWorld – Part of SkateWorld served as a motel from at least the 1950s until it was converted to a roller skating rink in the mid-1970s. According to the owner, a woman was shot and killed in the motel room that serves as the Pro Shop today. The woman’s ghost has reportedly been seen many times, roaming the main hallway that once served as the walkway outside the motel rooms. Although unconfirmed by the owner, witnesses have also reported seeing a ghostly figure standing beside the dumpster whistling, but it vanishes when approached.
Spruce Street – Witnesses have reported seeing a legless ghostly figure wearing a black cape gliding along Spruce Street. The specter is most commonly sighted in the 100 block of Spruce Street. (Credits: Bailey)
Westwood Junior High School – Night shift custodians have claimed to see a tall figure of a well-dressed black man roaming the halls of the building. They have also heard locker doors slamming shut, voices of children, chairs being pushed off the tables, weird knocking sounds, and the feeling of being watched. Strangely enough, on rare occasions, money was found in places after they were cleaned. Most of the paranormal activity takes place in the learning center (library), locker rooms, and the auditorium.
North Ridgeville
Saint Peters Church – When the church is quiet enough, it is said you can hear footsteps walking up and down the aisle, even when no one else is in the building.
New Union Center for the Arts – Strange voices can be heard when the building is empty, apparitions are seen, and objects move from one room to another.
Warner Center – This building on the campus of Oberlin College is haunted by a redheaded woman.
Sheffield Lake
Sheffield Middle School – Legend says a young student was found dead by a janitor one night after drowning in the pool. The area around the pool is supposedly haunted by her spirit. The pool has not been used since the incident, but her apparition has been seen in the hallway at the entrance to the pool. NOTE: The OES has learned there was never a pool at the school. There were never any swim teams for schools in the area, so there was no need for a swimming pool at the school. (Credits: Stacy)
Vermilion
Devil’s Heartbeat – Also known as Dean’s Hollow, this old, dangerous oil derrick in Vermilion is said to be haunted. It is said that you can see a blinding blue light at night and hear a booming sound, like a heartbeat. (Credit: Brenda Poole)
Dean’s Hollow Bridge – The bridge located in Dean’s Hollow (mentioned above) was the site of a man’s suicide. It is said that he hanged himself with a rope from the bridge’s rafters. The rope remained hanging from the bridge long after his body was removed. The old bridge was eventually torn down and a new one built. Legend says that if you drive across the bridge on certain nights, you will see the rope hanging from the rafters. If you see the rope, it is believed you will die soon after.
Gore Orphanage – Legend says an orphanage burned down in the early part of the twentieth century and all the children died. it is said that when the conditions are right, one can drive down the road and hear children crying and smell burning flesh. People have claimed that something unseen bangs on their cars, causing them to quickly flee the area. Once home, witnesses find small handprints in the dust on their cars. NOTE: Further research has indicated that the orphanage did not burn down with children inside. The remnants of the Swift Mansion are often mistaken for the orphanage. The orphanage was located near a bridge close to the mansion, but the mansion itself was never used as an orphanage. The orphanage burned to the ground well after it was closed and abandoned. Remember, as with most parks, the Gore Orphanage area closes at dusk. (Credits: Stacy Lawson)
Swift Mansion – Also known as Swift’s Hollow or The Old Swift Place, there were reportedly many deaths recorded on the property. Most of the deaths were children who died due to illness. The mansion burned down in 1926 and the area is still said to be haunted.

Madison Seminary’s Haunting History
Tour the rural state highways outside of Madison, Ohio , and you’ll see a bright red sign beckoning you towards a curious sight: Madison Seminary.

Madison Seminary, a collection of old brick buildings now connected to each other, has long been an imposing presence in the rural region. Time has only made the complex more intimidating as masonry cracks and fades, and windows remain darkened by abandonment. Reportedly one of the most haunted places in Ohio, Madison Seminary is now far from abandoned, as it frequently greets paranormal investigators and tourists hoping for something spooky. But just what is the story behind Madison Seminary and its legion of paranormal legends?
Timeline of Madison Seminary's History
Swipe or use timeline points to see Madison Seminary through the years

First built as a simple wooden frame building outside Madison, Ohio, in 1847, Madison Seminary’s original purpose was education. High school and college students both could come to Madison Seminary to further their studies. Eventually, the seminary needed expanding, and a new brick building was built and adjoined to the old wooden structure and took over most educational functions. The original building went on to serve as boarding for Madison Seminary’s 150 students at the time.

Madison Seminary continued to function as a secondary and higher education institution until 1891, when it was purchased by the Ohio Women’s Relief Corps. The group changed the name to the Madison Home and converted the complex into a relief and charity care home. Supporting former Civil War nurses as well as the widows and children of former soldiers, the Madison Home quickly filled up with families in need of support.

During the ownership of the Ohio Women’s Relief Corps, the facility was again expanded. The wood section was replaced with a large, two-wing brick building still seen today. The new building was named the Ohio Cottage, and the old brick Seminary building was named the Wittenmyer Cottage. Soon, the home became too much for the Women’s Relief Corps to maintain, and they donated it to the state in 1904. Then, it took on the official name of, ‘Home of the Ohio Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Their Wives, Mothers, Widows and Army Nurses.’

Madison Seminary continued to function as a relief home well into the 20th century, even as social security and veterans care benefits were established. In 1962, the relief home was finally closed and the residents were transferred either back to their families or to more modern facilities. After that, ownership transferred to the Department of Corrections. The department renamed the building to Opportunity Village and used it to house low-risk inmates from Ohio Women’s Reformatory and offer them work maintaining the buildings.

Over the following decades, the old complex served a variety of functions ranging from an extension of Cleveland State Hospital to county government offices. By the late 1980s, local officials considered demolishing the complex. But, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, so it sat in limbo rather than be torn down. A 1993 rental advertisement for the facility stated: ‘For rent, Historic building on Middle Ridge Road. Can be leased cheap, caution — building may be haunted.’

By 1998, the building had found a buyer, and Madison Seminary was saved from the local government’s wrecking ball. A few years after going into private ownership, the building’s local paranormal reputation instigated the first tours of Madison Seminary offered to the public. Nighttime tours and investigations soon followed, helping to grow the old complex’s popularity with paranormal enthusiasts. But just what spirits go bump in the night at Madison Seminary?

Spirit of Sarah at Madison Seminary
One of the most commonly encountered spirits is affectionately referred to as ‘Sarah,’ the spirit of a young former resident of the building, though some have hypothesized she may have been an elderly woman with dementia.
Visitors to her room often report hearing a child-like voice around the room, and otherwise sensing a youthful presence in the room. This is said to be especially true when visitors leave gifts and toys for Sarah, so much so that her room is stuffed with dolls and other supposed trigger objects.

Madison Seminary’s Phantom Spies
Another ghost who roams the halls of Madison Seminary is Elizabeth Stiles, a former spy during the Civil War. Said to haunt the Wittenmyer Cottage section of the complex, Elizabeth is often seen as a smokey white apparition in a long, 1800s-era dress.
Some visiting paranormal investigators and purported mediums have also reportedly conversed with Elizabeth’s spirit while investigating in the Wittenmyer Cottage.
Madison Seminary’s Many Apparitions
Investigators have also reported sightings of a ghostly young boy in the Wittenmyer Cottage. Referred to as ‘Steven,’ the little boy’s origin and true identity remains unknown. But he, like Elizabeth, is often seen as a shadowy apparition lingering through Wittenmyer.

But, Steven and Elizabeth are just two of many reported shadow figures and apparitions around Madison Seminary. Encounters with dark figures are common throughout the seminary complex. Some investigators even claim to see shadowy apparitions peeking out of doorways on the third floor. Others still have reported figures drifting listlessly around hallway corners.

Madison Seminary’s Ghostly Whispers
Audible disembodied voices are some of the most long-standing claims around Madison Seminary. Even back in its functional days, employees and nightshift guards reported hearing voices at strange times when they were all alone.
Others even claimed to hear whole conversations amongst invisible entities in the old office spaces. For many years, people have also claimed to feel a ‘pressure’ or a strange sense of dread in the building.

Echoing Specters of Madison Seminary
Voices are still regularly encountered at the seminary today, accompanied by other reported auditory phenomena. Investigators have claimed to hear the sounds of doors slamming, and other unexplained bangs, while others have also said to hear the sounds of rattling chains in the building.
Over the years, paranormal investigators have reportedly collected countless EVP recordings of these voices after investigating the building.

Madison Seminary Today
In recent years, Madison Seminary has become one of the most popular paranormal locations in the Midwestern U.S. Powered by a steady stream of tourists and ghost hunters, as well as features on paranormal TV shows like A&E’s My Ghost Story and Travel Chanel’s Destination Fear , Madison Seminary greets more and more visitors every year.
Through that popularity, many claims of paranormal evidence from visitors have driven intrigue around the building even further. So, if you’re ever lucky enough to find yourself amongst the ghosts and ghost hunters of Madison Seminary, we hope you bring a gift for Sarah, and maybe one for Steven too.
