Screen Rant
Disney’s haunted mansion dropped the ball on such an easy cameo.
Disney's new Haunted Mansion is full of exciting canon-inspired surprises from the ride, but the movie massively drops the ball on an easy cameo.
- The new Haunted Mansion movie missed an opportunity to give fans an exciting cameo by underutilizing the iconic hitchhiking ghosts from the theme park attraction.
- The trio's short graveyard appearance in the film was underwhelming and did not fully capitalize on their popularity and importance in The Haunted Mansion franchise.
- The movie could have included the hitchhiking ghosts as part of the plot by having them follow guests home, providing more screen time and a more satisfying cameo.
Disney's Haunted Mansion remake dropped the ball on an easy cameo that could have been more exciting for fans of the theme park attraction than it actually was. Influenced by the Haunted Mansion ride featured in Disneyland, Magic Kingdom, and Tokyo Disney — and the 2003 live-action film adaptation of the same name — the new Haunted Mansion movie had heaps of material to draw inspiration from. To its credit, the recent Haunted Mansion film implemented plenty of Easter eggs, lore, and notable character appearances that referenced some of the best elements of The Haunted Mansion's iterations across popular culture.
Haunted Mansion's cast of characters includes canon figures like Madame Leota and William Gracey, as well as newly introduced characters like Gabbie and Travis and a gaggle of " supernatural experts " attempting to rid the mansion of ghosts drawn directly from the Haunted Mansion rides. Of the recognizable apparitions the new movie includes, the token trio of hitchhiking ghosts — Gus, Ezra, and Phineas — are featured in a short cameo appearance. The incorporation of the hitchhiking ghosts is as fun to watch as all of Haunted Mansion's other canon-inspired surprises. However, their role in the movie could have been a lot more impressive had they been considered for a larger cameo.

Haunted Mansion's Ghosts Who Follow People Home Should Have Been The Hitchhiking Ghosts
The hitchhiking ghosts appear in almost all The Haunted Mansion mediums, but they are most famous for their role in Disney's haunted house attraction. During the ride-through of the Haunted Mansion , theme park guests can catch sight of Gus, Ezra, and Phineas in the crypts, where they loiter with their thumbs out in a classic hitchhiking gesture. The 2023 Haunted Mansion movie could have used their hitchhiking habits to have them follow people home. Instead, the trio only crops up in a short graveyard scene for a quick cameo appearance.
In the remake, once a guest visits the titular manor, they are irrevocably tied to the mansion and can only be freed if the curse of Haunted Mansion's Hat-Box Ghost is broken. If they attempt to leave, ghosts are sent to follow them home and haunt them until they return to the mansion. This could have been the perfect avenue to feature the hitchhiking ghosts as " hitching " a ride with those escaping the mansion. This would have been both hilarious and satisfying for fans of the ride, but Haunted Mansion unfortunately failed to make the most of the characters.
Why Disney's Haunted Mansion's Hitchhiking Ghosts Cameo Is So Underwhelming
Had the hitchhiking ghosts been tasked with following escaping guests home, they'd have the opportunity for more screen time and a more fulfilling cameo. Gus, Ezra, and Phineas are iconic to The Haunted Mansion franchise, but their seriously underwhelming scene does little to acknowledge that, nor does it give them much value in the overall storyline. Haunted Mansion may be able to make amends for floundering the roles of the hitchhiking ghosts in the potential Haunted Mansion sequel . However, until then, audiences will have to look to the franchise's other mediums if they want to catch more of Gus, Ezra, and Phineas.

Description [ ]
Members [ ], prisoner [ ].
The Prisoner , also known by the adopted name of Gus , is a short, dwarf-like figure whose most prominent features are his long beard and ball and chain that is shackled around his ankle. He also appears in the Graveyard scene next to the Executioner and the Beheaded Knight , where his singing voice is provided by Candy Candido.
Skeleton [ ]
The Skeleton , also known by his adopted name of Ezra , is a tall phantom that wears a bowler hat and has the same face mold as the Hatbox Ghost and other skeletal characters.
Traveler [ ]
The Traveler , also known by his adopted name of Phineas , is a plump, hunchbacked ghost who wears a top hat and carries around a carpetbag.
The three hitchhikers are almost always identified by the names Ezra, Gus and Phineas. While originally not found within any of the attractions in and of themselves, this was the result of the cast-member created Ghost Gallery story made to elaborate on the mansion's fictional history which became popular enough for the company to adopt for official use. In the story the three were identified as Ezra Dobbins, Gus Gracey, and Prof. Phineas Queeg though their surnames are not so unanimously used. In 2011, tombstones were added to the exterior of the Haunted Mansion in Walt Disney World which bore the names, "Ezra", "Gus", and, "Phineas" alongside the names of other classic Haunted Mansion characters, seeming to confirm the names.
Promotional material would also frequently use the Ezra, Gus, and Phineas names. Seemingly started in 2016, there would be a push for the three to be identified by the names of Ezra Beane , Prof. Phineas Plump , and simply, "Gus". This seemed to start with Disney Crossy Road but would be shared with souvenir popcorn cans and Host a Ghost jars. While these appear to be their company-mandated names, they have yet to be directly utilized in any Haunted Mansion.
Appearances [ ]
The haunted mansion [ ].
In all versions of the Haunted Mansion, after the Graveyard scene, they appear in a crypt with their thumbs out in the classic hitchhiking gesture. One of the three will then show up reflected in a set of mirrors the doom buggies pass, showing them sitting in with the guests in their car. The Ghost Host mentions how the mortal guests have been "selected to fill our quota" and how the hitchhikers will follow them home.
Walt Disney World [ ]
In February 2011, the Hitchhiking Ghosts at Walt Disney World were replaced with CGI animated characters. These were temporary as a way to make up for the new animatronics being made by the Imagineers. In April of 2011 Disney revealed brand new figures of the hitchhiking ghosts with more detail than ever. The old mirror trick the ghosts were known for was replaced with new technology which is reportedly similar to that of an XBox Kinect. Now the ghosts have the ability to interact with the guests, such as playing pranks on them. The vocals for all three of the CG ghosts were provided by actor Kurt Von Schmittou.
Haunted Mansion Holiday [ ]
For the first two years of Haunted Mansion Holiday , the Hitchhiking Ghosts were replaced with three jack-o-lanterns that would be Jack's gift to the guests. However, if one looks closely in the area where all three usually stand, where Lock, Shock, and Barrel now peer in through a window, they can be seen in the distance, implying that they never really left.
They are also mentioned in the narration, trying to pick up a ride on Jack Skellington 's sleigh , but they are ultimately denied, as Jack has to leave to continue his midnight journey.
Photo Opportunities [ ]
One of the three ghosts will appear in photographs taken by Walt Disney World photographers in-front of the Haunted Mansion.
Promotional Artwork [ ]
The Hitchhiking Ghosts are almost always featured on official artwork advertising the ride. The classic posters for the rides in Disneyland, the Magic Kingdom and Tokyo Disneyland all feature the ghosts in a hitchhiking pose outside of the Haunted Mansion. These posters can typically be found on Main Street U.S.A. in the gateway entrance to the park.
Other Park Appearances [ ]
Star tours: the adventures continue [ ].
In Tokyo Disneyland 's version of Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, three droids can be found at the end of the attraction made to resemble the Hitchhiking Ghosts. This includes an RX-series pilot droid holding a Marksman-H combat remote on a string to resemble the prisoner, and two F-series repair droids mirroring the skeleton and traveler with the Skeleton counterpart having a hat, and the traveler counterpart having a luggage bag.
Disney Skyliner [ ]
The Hitchhiking Ghosts appear on the artwork for one of the gondolas in Walt Disney World's Disney Skyliners.
World of Disney [ ]
This story in Disney Springs is themed to having once been an animation studio used by the Walt Disney Company. On a table implied to have been used by Marc Davis are illustrations of the Hitchhiking Ghosts.
Other Appearances [ ]
The haunted mansion (2003 movie) [ ].
The Hitchhiking Ghosts make a brief appearance in the 2003 film, passed by the hearse carrying the Evers family through the graveyard, striking their ubiquitous pose. The three appear in the hearse a moment later, startling Jim Evers. While the Skeleton observes silently, the Traveler and Prisoner argue how the Evers see them, thinking they are invisible until the Prisoner accuses Jim as a liar and psychic. The Skeleton, while in the hearse, is cropped out of frame in fullscreen home video releases.
Early script drafts for the movie have revealed that the three ghosts were going to play larger comic relief supporting roles, similar to the characters Emma and Ezra in the final film. In these drafts, the trio had their de factor names and were the mansion's former servants: Phineas was the mansion's head chef (complete with French accent), Ezra was the coachman, and Gus was the groundskeeper rather than a ball-and-chained prisoner.
The trio were played by Kenyan-born Indian-blood English actor Deep Roy (Gus), Jeremy Howard (Ezra), and Clay Martinez (Phineas).
Mickey's House of Villains [ ]
The Hitchhikers made another appearance in the direct to DVD film Mickey's House of Villains, based off of the TV series House of Mouse. They were released from their crate by Cruella De Vil, during the Disney Villains ' takeover of The House of Mouse. They can be seen sitting at a table together, when Mickey returns in his Sorcerer's Apprentice costume. The three turn their heads in a way to imitate sauropods from Fantasia (1940), including Ezra stretching out his neck like one of them.
Haunted Mansion (2023 film) [ ]
The three Hitchhiking Ghosts make a brief appearance in the film when Ben visits the graveyard in a vision to identify the mansion's curse. However, many other unrelated ghosts including the Mariner , the Mummy and a ghost horse, take their role in hitching a ride and following the mortal characters home, forcing them to hurry back.
A deleted scene during the reverse seance has Ben looking outside to see the Hitchhiking Ghosts trying to take off in one of the parked cars outside before they notice him watching them from the window.
Promotional Films [ ]
2004 disneyland advertisement [ ].
A promotional ad for Disneyland in 2004 revolved around the Hitchhiking Ghosts riding different Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure attractions with a few other ghosts. They go on the Haunted Mansion, Matterhorn Bobsleds, and the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror all gleefully. When they have to go on It's a Small World however, they scream at the sight of the happy singing dolls. In this ad, they are played by the same actors who portrayed them in the 2003 film.
Television [ ]
House of mouse [ ].
On House Of Mouse , the Hitchhiking Ghosts make a cameo appearance onstage after Pete says, "That stage is deader than the Haunted Mansion". They also appear in the episode House Ghosts where they are freed from a crate by Pete and scare him along with the other residents from The Haunted Mansion''. including the Lonesome Ghosts , the Hatbox Ghost , the Executioner , the Skeletons from The Skeleton Dance , and The Bride . They sang " Grim Grinning Ghosts " in an upbeat tune. They appear at the end of the episode, when Mickey tells Donald about their interruption.
Muppets Haunted Mansion [ ]
The Hitchhiking Ghosts appear in CGI form in the special's ending, having hitched a ride in Gonzo and Pepe 's hearse back home, with Kermit spotting them in a video call to Gonzo and asking if they'll be joining them for their post-Halloween breakfast get together.
Printed Material [ ]
Ghost gallery [ ], slg comics [ ].
The Hitchhiking Ghosts show up in several stories throughout, often as cameos. Each one gets their own individual story explaining how they died and came to haunt Gracey Manor , and they are referred to by their names: Gus with " The Big Nap ," Ezra with " Laugh? I Thought I'd Die! " and Phineas with the previously-unreleased " The Doctor is In ."
Disney Kingdoms [ ]
In this series , the trio like many of the other ghosts, were trapped in the Grand Hall by the Captain 's curse and were unable to leave. When the Captain tries to intimidate Danny with his powers, he casts a spell on the hitchhikers and transforms them into bestial monsters, though the Prisoner's ball and chain ends up knocking Danny out of the hall and out of the reach of the spell's effect, letting him regain his senses. The trio is restored to normal once the Captain's magic influence has been broken, and they take a liking to Danny and begin following him home and back.
Tales from the Haunted Mansion [ ]
The Hitchhiking Ghosts play a recurring minor role throughout the series as a regular haunting seen along Route 13 , the cursed highway that leads to the Mansion and the neighboring Eternal Grace Cemetery , often trying to hitch a ride from whatever foolish mortals are driving along the road at night.
Video-Games [ ]
Kinect disneyland adventures [ ].
The Hitchhiking Ghosts make several appearances in this game's Haunted Mansion levels. They first appear when they warn the player to leave the mansion and then reappear throughout the levels as common enemies defeated by flashlights. In the end cutscene they perform their famous hitchhiking pose as the Ghost Host mentions them following the guests home.
Disney Crossy Road [ ]
In this video-game, the three are playable characters referred to as Ezra Beane, Prof. Phineas Plump and Gus.

Mickey's boo-to-you halloween parade [ ].
The Hitchhiking Ghosts appear on the last Haunted Mansion float is a platform with an ornate backdrop and willow leaves covering the railing. The Hitchhiking Ghosts are standing on the top, moving to the music. They point towards the guests and do their signature thumb motions to hitch a ride. Their float is followed by the Halloween Hoedown units
Meet 'n' Greets [ ]
The Hitchhiking Ghosts have appeared as rare meet n greet characters at special Halloween-time events.
Paraphernalia [ ]
Ghost post [ ].
The Hitchhiking Ghosts - once again referred to as Ezra, Phineas and Gus - can be heard bantering with each other through the Phantom Radio . The Great Unraveling has hit them particularly hard, robbing them of their ability to hitchhike away from the mansion with foolish mortals, and they actively talk about their frustration and despair at this fact. Despite this, it is never confirmed if they are ever properly enlisted in the Committee of Wandering Ghosts , despite Sally Slater 's best efforts to recruit Phineas in one broadcast. They are, however, sympathetic to the cause and do their part to help find a solution to the fog outside.
In addition, players that could visit Disneyland and ride the Haunted Mansion with their app would get a special audio greeting from the Hitchhiking Ghosts when they passed them in the crypt.
Ezra was voiced by Pete Renoudet , Phineas by Stephen Stanton, and Gus by Dee Bradley Baker.
Merchandise [ ]
The Hitchhiking Ghosts are probably the most prolifically featured characters in Haunted Mansion merchandise. 2019 popcorn buckets for the three sold in the Churro Stand outside the New Orleans Square mansion even included tombstones for each of them saying, " Rest In Peace Professor Phineas Plump his travel plans have hit a bump ", " Dearly departed Ezra Beane, unluckiest hitchhiker we've ever seen " and, " Here lies good ol' Gus, hitchhiking because he missed his bus R.I.P. ".
Trader Sam's Grog Grotto [ ]
Special tiki -style mugs have been sold in the visage of the Hitchhiking Ghosts at this location.
- Despite being some of the most famous ghosts in the attraction, they were never given any official backstory.
- The Hitchhiking Ghosts are often considered to be Disney Villains and to be featured amongst this Disney franchise.

Hitchhiking ghosts come out to socialize (and terrorize) in full Haunted Mansion trailer
"We got down to the point where we were obsessing over the angle you first see the mansion when you walk onto the ride in Disneyland," director Justin Simien tells EW of translating the ride to film.
Entertainment Weekly's Oscars expert, 'RuPaul's Drag Race' beat reporter, host of 'Quick Drag' Twitter Spaces, and cohost of 'EW's BINGE' podcast. Almost all of the drag content on this site is my fault (you're welcome).

There's always "room for one more" happy haunt in director Justin Simien 's Haunted Mansion film, and it could be you.
Disney unveiled Tuesday the first full-length trailer for the Dear White People creator's movie adaptation of the beloved Disneyland ride, and the extended preview suggests that the film is just as entertaining (and slightly horrifying) as the experience it's based on.
The film follows Rosario Dawson as a single mother who moves herself into a New Orleans manor, only to realize it's infested with spiritual squatters. She enlists a team of paranormal experts ( LaKeith Stanfield , Owen Wilson , Tiffany Haddish , Jamie Lee Curtis ) to help get rid of them, but they put up a menacing fight.
In the new preview, Dawson and her crew confront the inhabitants of the house, including a particularly harrowing run-in with Jared Leto 's Hatbox Ghost. Also spotted: a doom buggy and the trio of hitchhiking ghosts that appear inside riders' vehicles near the end of the ride at both Disneyland and Disney World .
Simien previously told EW that Leto's take on the fan-favorite Hatbox Ghost ride animatronic is a "menacing and terrifying" interpretation of the storied character .
"We got down to the point where we were obsessing over the angle you first see the mansion when you walk onto the ride in Disneyland, when we see it through the gates and we see the pillars," he explains of framing the physical set for the film. "That angle has to hit. That's how specific we were. When you first glide through the dining hall and you see the waltzing dancers, that angle had to be right, because that's the one where you gasp on the ride."
Haunted Mansion — also starring Danny Devito , Dan Levy , and Winona Ryder — releases July 28 in theaters. Watch the full trailer above.

History [ ]
Background [ ].
The Hitchhiking Ghosts are three resident spirits of the Haunted Mansion known as Phineas (A.K.A. The Traveler ), Ezra (A.K.A. The Skeleton ), and Gus (A.K.A. The Prisoner ). As hitchhiking ghosts they use their ghostly powers to haunt mortals that cross paths with the mansion , working to fill up a quota from mansion officials .
Development History [ ]
The three got their semi-official names from a cast-member created backstory for the mansion called The Ghost Gallery. Since the story's creation, the names have been frequently affiliated with the trio in merchandise and the ride itself.
In 2011 , Walt Disney World began further characterizing the trio in the attraction. Phineas' character was inspired by John Candy and Chris Farley, Ezra was inspired by John Cleese , Jim Carrey and Michael Keaton , while Gus was inspired by Christopher Lloyd 's character from the sitcom Taxi.
Appearances [ ]
The haunted mansion [ ].
The Hitchhiking Ghosts are the, "Poster Ghosts" for the Haunted Mansion, appearing in most promotional materials and posters for the ride.
In all versions of the ride (except Phantom Manor and Mystic Manor ), the trio appear in the exit crypt to haunt guests as they leave the mansion as the Ghost Host explains their nature. Each of the ghosts appear alongside the guests in mirrors showing their Doom Buggies . In the Disneyland and Tokyo Disneyland versions of the attraction this is achieved with a semi-transparent mirror that has doom-buggies with Hitchhiker AA figures on the other side. In the Magic Kingdom this was replaced with a CGI effect in 2011 that allowed them to move more freely at the expense of the figures' visibility.
Gus is the only one of them to consistently make an additional appearance in the ride, being found in the graveyard alongside the Executioner and the Beheaded Knight . In Walt Disney World, the three have tombstones visible outside of the Haunted Mansion.
Haunted Mansion Holiday [ ]
In the first couple years of Haunted Mansion Holiday, the trio could be visible from a window in the distance which Lock, Shock and Barrel were peering through. They are also mentioned attempting to hitchhike a ride in Jack 's sleigh but being denied.
Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom [ ]
In Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom , they have their own spell card called "The Haunted Mansion's Happy Haunting Grounds". It was only available to guests that attended Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party in the fall of 2013 .
Meet 'n' Greets [ ]
They rarely appear as face characters, only appearing during events such as the ride's 40th Anniversary.
Other Appearances [ ]
Mickey's house of villains [ ].
In the made-for-DVD compilation movie Mickey's House of Villains , they are freed from a crate by Cruella De Vil and join the villains in the song It's Our House Now! as they take over the House of Mouse. Aside from scaring the guests, they do not appear to be doing anything bad and are just happy to scare the guests.
The hitchhiking ghosts make a cameo appearance in the graveyard scene of this film with Jeremy Howard as Ezra, Deep Roy as Gus, and Clay Martinez as Phineas. Phineas and Gus later hitch a ride in the hearse that Jim Evers , Michael Evers , and Megan Evers are in before annoyingly bantering about whether or not Jim and his children can see them, a gag on their invisible nature from the original ride but of unclear reference without knowledge of the source material.
Haunted Mansion (2023) [ ]
The hitchhiking ghosts appear in the 2023 film adaptation of the ride with Fedor Steer as Ezra, Terence Rosemore as Phineas, and Mike Benitez as Gus. The three of them manifest within a dream along with the Caretaker and his dog where Gus playfully beckons Ben Matthias to take them with him towards the graveyard, adding that "You're going that way soon." Interestingly, the gimmick of them following people out of the mansion is not done by them, but instead by the other ghosts such as the Mariner .
In a deleted scene when Ben was searching for William Gracey, the hitchhiking ghosts tried to use the cars outside the mansion to leave, but couldn't get any of them to start, before noticing Ben watching them through a window.
Television [ ]
House of mouse [ ].
The ghosts appear in several episodes of this show.
In the series premiere " The Stolen Cartoons ", they were shown when Pete told Mickey that the club was "deader than the Haunted Mansion".
At the end of the advertisement for "The 7 Deadly Singers" in " Pete's House of Villains ", they appear in a warning that tells the audience to "Beware of ticket scalping ghosts.".
The ghosts' most noticeably in the episode " House Ghosts ", where they are freed from a crate by Pete and sing " Grim Grinning Ghosts " along with other residents of The Haunted Mansion such as the Bride , the Executioner , and the Hatbox Ghost , as well as the Lonesome Ghosts and the Skeletons from The Skeleton Dance . During the number, they scare Pete out of the club.
Muppets Haunted Mansion [ ]
The trio appear at the end of the Disney+ special, hitching a ride with Gonzo and Pepe. Upon seeing them while having a phone conversation with the two, Kermit suggests bringing them over for breakfast.
Disney XD Shorts [ ]
Ezra appeared, oddly without Phineas and Gus, in a stop-motion animated Disney XD station ID aired in October 2016 , in which Star Butterfly and Marco Diaz have a run-in with him.
Printed Materials [ ]
The ghost gallery [ ].
The Ghost Gallery was an unofficial series of Haunted Mansion character biographies created by Disney World cast members in an effort to add more mythos to the attraction. This story proved so popular that it was responsible for inspiring the plot of the SLG Comics and created the hitchhikers' official names, those being Phineas, Ezra, and Gus.
Professor Phineas Queeg was a discredited chemist turned snake-oil peddler who was committed to the New Salem Insane Asylum after having sold a "miracle elixir" which caused the voice of the one who drank it to raise an octave. Phineas wound up escaping with Ezra and Gus and they hitchhiked away together. The professor died from lead poisoning after he cut his lip on one of his elixir bottles.
The Ghost Gallery's backstory for Ezra the skeletal hitchhiker is considered inappropriate and features mature implications that gives his character perverted characteristics, and the story features misogynistic weight-shaming. In the backstory, Ezra Dobbins was a disgusting criminal who enjoyed stalking overweight women, breaking into their homes and watching them as they changed. After having been arrested for breaking into the boudoir of the mayor's ample daughter was sent to the New Salem Insane Asylum because the judge and jury believed he must be insane due to his interest in overweight women. Ezra wound up dying while peeping on the "Fat Lady" of a circus when she accidentally sat on him.
Gus Gracey was a genetic dwarf from Ohio who, as a child, killed his family pets and attempted to murder his siblings on several occasions. His parents ultimately had him institutionalized in the New Salem Insane Asylum but he eventually grew up and wound up hunting down his parents and subsequently murdered them. Gus then shipped himself inside of a crate to his cousin George Gracey's mansion in an effort to kill him, only to be imprisoned in one of the mansion's secret rooms. When the mansion was inherited by George's son Master Gracey , Gracey had his clairvoyant Madame Leota place a curse on Gus to imprison him on the mansion's grounds. Gus wound up dying while trying to throw his ball and chain at a cat sitting by a well, resulting in Gus' iron ball falling down the well, killing him.
The SLG Haunted Mansion comics [ ]
They appear in the main story as well as all of the bonus and side stories. They never say anything but attempt to hitchhike. They succeed at one point but scare the cab driver, killing him, and wind up back at the mansion with the cab driver joining them as a new resident. Each ghost got a side-story telling of their lives before they came to the Mansion.
Gus was a Shepard who only wanted to get some sleep but everywhere he went had bad luck until he was arrested in Port Royal until he died and found his way to the mansion. He soon wants to leave since the other ghosts parties keep him awake and join Ezra and Phineas.
Ezra Gasser was a prankster since childhood that ran a successful practical joke business when he got older. Seeking out new jokes to help his business, he discovered Chinese finger traps from a mysterious salesman but found himself unable to free himself. He laughed himself to death and was then invited to the Mansion. However, his pranks made the other ghosts angry, resulting in him joining Phineas and Gus.
Phineas Q. Hackenbush was a snake-oil salesman that was chased by an angry mob given snake tongues by his "miracle cure" product off a cliff. After being invited to the Mansion, he kept his business going, but when Madame Leota reminded everyone that they were already dead, and he was chased out, joining Gus and Ezra.
The Marvel Haunted Mansion comics [ ]
The Hitchhiking Ghosts are also featured, in a more minor role, in the five-issue Disney Kingdoms tale. They take part in the various parties thrown by the ghosts and are also briefly turned into monsters by the Captain . At the end of the story, they can be seen waving goodbye to Danny Crowe , the protagonist.
Video Games [ ]
The haunted mansion (video game) [ ].
All three make a cameo in the Graveyard level of the game after the area has been cleared. In a reference to the ride, Zeke encounters all three in the crypt area of the Graveyard. When interacted with, each of them offer to keep Zeke company during his journey. Ezra, Phineas and Gus are all voiced by Bill Farmer .
Kinect: Disneyland Adventures [ ]
The Hitchhiking Ghosts are the main enemies for the Haunted Mansion levels of this video-game, being summoned by Madame Leota to fight the player. They also appear in cut-scenes, first warning the player not to enter the mansion and later trying to hitchhike with them as they leave.
Disney Crossy Road [ ]
All three of the ghosts are playable characters in Disney Crossy Road where they are named Ezra Beane , Prof. Phineas Plump , and Gus. While playing as the Doom Buggy, they will appear as NPCs who attempts to hitchhike a ride with the player.
Disney Magic Kingdoms [ ]
As part of the mobile game's Halloween update for 2021, the three Hitchhiking Ghosts were added as unlockable characters, along with the Hatbox Ghost . The names used for the three Hitchhiking Ghosts are Ezra, Gus, and Phineas.

Ezra has a brief-case which is covered in travel-stickers for Florida , Hong Kong , and 13 Anaheim (referencing different Disney Parks). Phineas has an open travel case containing a candelabra, urn, bust of Charles Dickens, and portrait of Cousin Maude from the Dread Family busts in the ride's queue.
- In the Magic Kingdom's Jungle Cruise is a bottle labelled, "Prof. Plump's Miracle Tonic for Everlasting Life", seemingly referencing the traveller ghost's frequently used name Professor Phineas Plump and background as a snake-oil salesman from merchandise and the Ghost Gallery.
- The Tokyo Disneyland version of Star Tours: The Adventures Continue features three Audio-Animatronic droids (one being a former RX-24 from the original Star Tours ) positioned near the end of the queue in a manner similar to the Hitchhiking Ghosts.
- Phineas the traveler has been misidentified in merchandise on two separate occasions. One piece of merchandise identified him as Brother Dave from the family-plot while another one identified him as Phineas Pock, a name frequently used in the mansion (most notably for the singing bust Phineas P. Pock).
- In Phantom Manor their niche was filled in by the Phantom and later Mélanie Ravenswood in a 2018 refurbishment. There is a ticket-seller in Phantom Canyon who shares the, "Leering Head" mould which Ezra has, resulting in the character being nicknamed Ezra as-well.

Hitchhiking ghosts come out to socialize (and terrorize) in full Haunted Mansion trailer
- Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below
Disney Hitchhiking ghosts in 'Haunted Mansion' trailer
Simien previously told EW that Leto's take on the fan-favorite Hatbox Ghost ride animatronic is a "menacing and terrifying" interpretation of the storied character .
"We got down to the point where we were obsessing over the angle you first see the mansion when you walk onto the ride in Disneyland, when we see it through the gates and we see the pillars," he explains of framing the physical set for the film. "That angle has to hit. That's how specific we were. When you first glide through the dining hall and you see the waltzing dancers, that angle had to be right, because that's the one where you gasp on the ride."

The Names and Origins of Disney’s Haunted Mansion’s Hitchhiking Ghosts
For well over 60 years, The Haunted Mansion has been one of Disney’s most beloved – and studied – attractions. Guests have long been fascinated with the backstories of the “Grim Grinning Ghosts” featured in the ride.

Three of the best known of these ghouls are the Hitchhiking Ghosts — Ezra (the tall, dapper skeletal phantom), Phineas (the plump, hunchback character adorned with a top hat), and Gus (the short, gnome-like bearded prisoner with the ball and chain attached to his leg) – who attempt to “go home” with guests at the attraction’s conclusion.
So just who are the hitchhiking ghosts, and how have their backstories evolved over the years? Let’s find out.

First off, just in case we need to jog your memory, the scene featuring the three hitchhiking ghosts occurs just at the end of the ride. Guests first pass by animatronics of the three ghosts. Next, their Doom Buggie turns guests around and they stare directly into mirrors where a reflection of one of the ghost animatronics appears right next to them “in” their ride vehicle — or, at the Magic Kingdom, an animated digital projection of one of the ghosts begins playing pranks on the guests — all while the attraction’s Ghost Host informs them that the ghost will be accompanying them home.
Over the years, numerous backstories have been developed for the three ghosts. Initial backstories were conceived by Magic Kingdom cast members, and while these were unofficial, and frankly not nearly family friendly enough for Disney to ever actually use, the names Ezra, Gus and Phineas did originate from these “Ghost Gallery” portfolios.

The first official backstories for the three appeared in the early 2000s run of Haunted Mansion comic books produced by Slave Labor Graphics. Their three origins in those comics were as follows:
Gus, the bearded prisoner with the ball and chain on his leg, was actually a shepherd. Tired from a lack of sleep due to the noise of his sheep, he accidentally tumbled into a wedding and knocked over the wealthy groom, leading to his arrest. Initially he enjoyed napping in prison, however his slumber was interrupted by cannon-fire as the prison fortress he was held in came under attack by pirates. Gus was able to escape and use a cannon to launch himself on a pirate dinghy, however his his ball-and-chain ended up falling overboard, causing him to drown. He’s attempting to leave the Mansion through hitchhiking because the raucous guests of the Mansion still won’t allow him to sleep.

Ezra was a “mischievous prankster” who started Gasser Novelties, a practical joke shop business. After getting his fingers caught in an unbreakable finger-trap, Ezra literally laughed himself to death. His spirit eventually found his way to the Mansion, however his practical jokes on other ghostly residents led to him being kicked out, hence the hitchhiking.
Phineas, or Dr. Phineas Q. Hackenbush, was depicted in the comics as a self-proclaimed doctor who would travel the country attempting to sell his questionable wares. Eventually, he began hocking “Dr. Phineas Q. Hackenbush’s Patented and Healthful Reptile Lubricant”, a literal snake oil. However, after angering the townspeople, he chased by an angry mob. Phineas makes a run for it, but ends up falling off a cliff to his death. Eventually, Phineas moves into the Mansion, but is quickly chased out after angering the other residents, hence his hitchhiker status.

While these SLG Comics were officially released by Disney, they were never directly integrated into the Haunted Mansion attraction itself. In 2019, the official DisneyParks blog released newly revised official origins for the trio, all of which were similar, yet simplified versions of the tales told in the aforementioned comics. These were as follows:
Ezra is the “tallest of the hitchhiking trio and lived his life as a vagabond. Some would consider him the leader of the three.”
Phineas Plump “traveled the country (hawking) snake oil at train depots. He crossed over to the spirit realm while experimenting with a new miracle concoction and still keeps his trusty carpet bag by his side, eager to make another sale.”
Gus “served most of his time for a crime he did not commit. Upon encountering this pint-sized phantom, it is easy to tell he is no criminal mastermind. His playful innocence is apparent as he always looks at the bright side of the afterlife.”

The Hitchhiking Ghost trio does briefly cameo in the 2003 Haunted Mansion film, first in their traditional hitchhiking pose before appearing inside of hearse with Eddie Murphy’s Jim Evers, mimicking the way they appear in guest’s vehicles on the attraction. The trio are portrayed by Deep Roy (Gus), Jeremy Howard (Ezra), and Clay Martinez (Phineas) in the film. As of the time of this writing, it has not been confirmed if they’ll be appearing in the upcoming 2023 Haunted Mansion film, or who’ll be playing them if they do.

From a haunted Wetherspoon in Dover to a shopping centre in Thanet allegedly home to paranormal entities there are plenty of places you will need to avoid after dark.
Here are the stories of some of the ghosts said to haunt castles, country homes and old pubs around the county.

The ten most haunted places in Dover and Deal
The kings head, deal.

The Kings Head has good views of passing ships and one that appears once every 50 years in full sail is the phantom Lady Lovibond of Deal, said to be lost on February 13 1724 with 50 lives.
When the captain took his bride on board the sailors all muttered "Bad Luck.'' She had been the girlfriend of the first mate and, driven mad with jealousy, the mate deliberately rammed the ship into the Goodwin Sands.
The Kings Head itself also exhibits ghostly manifestations. these include a man wearing old-fashioned cricketing outfit and a tasselled cap.
The old Metropole Hotel (The Eight Bells), Dover

The Metropole was a luxury hotel which opened in 1896 when Dover was one of the richest towns in the country.
When the flats above The Eight Bells were left empty, passers-by claimed to hear the sounds of a woman singing coming from them.
It is believed that the singing was a young woman named Adele. Adele was said to meet her lover at the Metropole Hotel before he married his fiancee during the Second World War.
Adele later volunteered as a nurse where she was killed at the front line. Later, her best friend claims to her seen her in her hotel room. When she went to greet her with a hug, Adele disappeared.
The Keep at Dover Castle
The apparition of a woman in a red dress has been seen within the stone walls of the old keep.
A cavalier has also been spotted in the area.
Underground tunnels, Dover Castle

In the so-called secret underground tunnels, ghosts of Second World War soldiers have been seen and felt, going about their daily duties by numerous tourists.
It was in these tunnels that a couple heard violent screams and cries for help.
Under the impression the spooky noises were part of a planned event, they were startled when they were told by staff there were no such things happening that day.
These soldiers are said to be escapees from Dunkirk and one figure in khaki, with a blurred face, was seen walking purposefully along a corridor in 2013.
The Arthurian hero Sir Gawain is also reportedly buried here.
Battlements at Dover Castle

The battlements of Dover Castle are thought to be haunted by the headless spirit of a drummer boy who was murdered during an errand involving a large sum of money.
It is believed the boy was decapitated by thieves who stole money that he was carrying.
His headless ghost has been seen a number of times across the castle grounds, often heard banging his drum purposefully.
Disembodied voices have been heard during the night, doors have often been witnessed opening and closing of their own accord. Sudden unexplained drops in temperature has also been reported.
According to HauntedRooms.co.uk, a camera crew that was walking past the castle keep once heard a loud scream, coming from the battlements above, as if someone had flung themselves over the edge to their death.
Convinced someone was falling towards them, they jumped for cover. Moments later, the scream ceased, but no body hit the floor.
St Margaret's Bay

A strange spiritual sea serpent was observed in 1912, moving swiftly through the water, vanishing from view after a sailing boat moved too close to it.
Roman Lighthouse, near St Mary in Castro Church in Dover Castle
Both a ghostly monk in a dark habit and a phantom Roman soldier forever walk this spooky area.
The Goodwin Sands, Deal

As well as the Lady Lovibond, two other ghostly craft are said to frequent the Goodwin Sands, the liner Montrose, and a man of war named Shrewsbury.
Sholden Hall, Deal
An admiral is said to have once lived here, and is held accountable for the odd knocks and taps heard around the care home.
The Cinque Port Arms, Dover

This pub is haunted by sixteenth century clowns.
Late at night, there are sounds of manic laughter and slapping from around that fireplace.
This is the only English pub haunted by humourists; the others are of a much more serious nature.
Where to see a ghost in Kent

The most haunted places in Tunbridge Wells
Calverley road shops.

According to reports, a ghost is said to have haunted shops on Calverley Road during the early 1990s.
Footsteps were heard on empty floors, finger marks would suddenly appear in dust, whispering could be heard and a tobacco smell could be detected.
Broomhill Road
Motorists driving along Broomhill Road say they have had to stop abruptly due to a ghostly figure walking out into the road.
This man is wearing a grey suit , and disappears into the darkness when hit by a car.
Some believe he stands where a cottage once stood - perhaps his former home.

Motorists throughout the 21st century say they have seen a ghostly limousine parked on the side of the road on the B2169 towards Bayham Abbey.
Some say it's white, while others say it's black.
When people have tried to get close to it, it shimmers and vanishes.
The Pantiles

A row of properties were being renovated in the mid-90s in The Pantiles, and a street cleaner passed the site early one morning.
He said he could hear loud banging and saw timber being thrown arounf.
But when he went to inspect, there was no one to be seen.

The Common land is said to be haunted by a few ghosts, including a large drunken woman who shouts at people as they walk by.
A phantom female voice has reportedly been heard calling out the name 'Daniel'; the woman is never seen, but is thought to be a lady who fell to her death from the nearby Wellington Rocks.
What's more, a ghostly horseman dressed in mauve on the back of a black horse also travels the area.
Walkers in Hurst Wood near Rusthall say they have heard sounds of a horse galloping behind them.
When they turn, they are confronted with headless horseman dressed in Cromwellian battledress.
A man says he witnessed this in 1966, and fled in terror.
The woods used to be a former pony track and was used by smugglers. It is believed the ghost could have been a 17th century smuggler from a nearby camp that was run by Cromwell.
The Red Lion, Rusthall
The Red Lion in Rusthall dates back to the 15th century, and some say it is haunted by a scruffy looking phantom hound.
According to reports, this ghostly dog sleeps on the bar floor.
The most haunted places in Medway
St bartholomew's hospital.

A woman has been 'seen to walk through the wall in one of the side rooms'.
The most sinister story, retold the same way, involves a little crying boy, aged six to eight, with brown hair and a tatty white shirt, grey sleeveless pullover, grey short trousers, and long socks, which are down by his ankles.
They claim he always seeks his mum or dad and his appearance usually meant there was going to be a death on one of the wards.

The 6 Most Haunted Places in Idaho
Idaho is not a state that is particularly known for ghost stories and hauntings. For some reason, it is often seen as a more wholesome state compared to some of the other paranormal hotspots around the country.
However, that doesn’t mean that there is no ghost activity to be found, you just have to know where to look! From creepy cemeteries to abandoned prisons, haunted Idaho has a little bit of everything to offer.
Take a look at the six most haunted places in Idaho!
1. Canyon Hill Cemetery, Caldwell

When it comes to local ghost stories, there are always one or two that really stick in your mind thanks to some of the unique details. In Idaho, one such story is that of the legless jogger who haunts Canyon Hill Cemetery!
Apparently, if you are brave enough to drive up to the gates of the cemetery and park your car there around midnight the apparition of a jogger with no legs floats up to the driver-side window and taps on the glass!
2. The Bates Motel, Coeur d' Alene

Originally, The Bates Motel in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho was officers’ barracks both before and during the second world war. It was later sold and converted into a motel known as The Roadway Inn.
Several years later it was sold again, this time to Mr. Randy Bates who renamed it The Bates Motel. This was long before the movie Psycho was ever released, but the name certainly made it popular once the movie did come out! It has actually been suggested that the author of Psycho, Robert Bloch, stayed at the motel sometime in the fifties and kept note of the name.
The now-iconic Bates Motel sign was put up by a production crew in the eighties when a movie was filmed there and was left behind when production wrapped.
Now, the real-life Bates Motel may not be as terrifying as the movie version, but it is still considered to be one of the most haunted places in Idaho! Both guests and employees say that there is near-constant paranormal activity at the hotel.
The majority of the unexplained occurrences seem to be centered on rooms one and three. Guests who are given these rooms often report getting the unsettling feeling of being watched.
They also experience cold spots, strange noises, lights turning on and off and ashtrays either being knocked off of tables or simply moved to another spot when no one has been in the room.

3. Shoshone Indian Ice caves, Shoshone

When we think about haunted locations, it is a natural reaction to think only of buildings, but one of the most haunted places in Idaho is actually a cave! Shoshone Indian Ice Caves are a popular attraction for tourists visiting the area.
However, long after the tourists have gone and the caves are closed up it is said that employees hear phantom footsteps and hushed voices. Some have suggested that it is the Indian princess Edahow who haunts the caves since she was buried in the ice many decades ago.
4. Owyhee Plaza, Boise

The Owyhee Plaza has been something of a Landmark in Boise, Idaho since 1910. It has seen a large amount of renovation work over the years, but it still retains most of its regal and classic architecture.
From the time it opened up until the 1940s the hotel was considered something of a hotspot, especially a rooftop garden which featured a restaurant and dance floor which often had live music.
Now offering office, retail, and living facilities, this one-time hotel is without a doubt one of the most haunted places in the state!
Past staff and guests alike have report strange goings-on at the hotel including a full-body apparition!
One of the most compelling reports comes from a couple who stayed in room number 136. The lady awoke during the night and saw a female spirit standing in the room. She said that she was not at all scared, in fact, she felt a sense of calm come over her!
She asked the spirit who she was and what she wanted, but the ghostly woman simply faded away.
Other guests and staff have reported similar apparitions in various different parts of the hotel and many people report the sensation that they are being watched or hearing strange unexplained noises.

5. The Brig at Farragut State Park, Farragut

Farragut State Park is one of the most popular vacation spots in Northern Idaho thanks to its convenient location and fantastic amenities, but come nightfall the campground known as The Brig is not for the faint of heart! In fact, it is one of the most haunted places in Idaho!
The Brig was originally a naval training center and at one time it also served as a military jail. It was built during the Second World War in response to the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The construction took 11 months and cost around $100 million.
In terms of the history of the area, The Brig has been the site of at least one homicide and there was also at least one suicide here during World War 2. When Farragut was a military base, it would have been home to around 300,000 men.
It is not clear who or what actually haunts The Brig, but most witnesses do agree that the apparition seems to be in some kind of uniform although there is debate as to whether this is a military uniform or prison garb – both of which would be plausible for the building.
It could be that the sightings are two or more different apparitions. Visitors, campers, and staff over the years have all described the apparition in detail saying that he almost seems like a real living person – apart from the fact that he can vanish into thin air and is often slightly transparent!
Aside from the apparition, there are also reports of objects flying across the old cells and large, heavy objects being ‘relocated’ when nobody has been in the building! Sounds like the ideal spot to go camping, right?

6. Old Idaho State Penitentiary, Boise

Everyone knows that prisons are nearly always a magnet for paranormal activity thanks to the melting pot of emotions that soak into the walls of these buildings. Old Idaho State Penitentiary is no different and it has long been considered one of the most haunted prisons in the US .
The prison was established back in 1870 as a one-cell house, but it very quickly began to grow into a complex of buildings enclosed by a thick wall of sandstone. In fact, part of the prisoners’ sentences was mining the rock to build the very walls that kept them in!
Over 10,000 convicts have passed through the prison over the course of a century and it seems that not all of them left!
There have been several deaths on the premises including 10 executions and 110 documented deaths due to illness, murder, and plain old age.
However, the conditions in this prison were horrific, with inmates being subjected to inhumane treatment so it would not be surprising if the death toll was actually much higher, and those deaths were simply not documented!
Due to the design of the prison, the cells were unbearably hot in the summer months and freezing cold in Winter, plus there was no indoor plumbing so as you might imagine there was a great deal of misery and suffering which has definitely left a mark on the prison.
There are a number of documented paranormal events that have happened in the Old Idaho State Penitentiary. The most haunted spot is said to be 5 House where Idaho’s answer to Jack the Ripper, Raymond Allen Snowden was executed in 1957.
It is believed that the murderer’s soul is still haunting the prison and grounds and he has done even before the prison closed in the seventies.
Reports of his presence have been made by visitors, staff, and prisoners alike! Whenever he draws near, the living is said to be overcome by a feeling of dread and oppression.
Snowden is by no means the only spirit at Old Idaho State Penitentiary. It is a fairly common occurrence for visitors to hear phantom footsteps echoing throughout the halls and disembodied voices are also heard fairly regularly.
Visitors participating in the regular walking tours of the old prison have also been touched and even pushed by unseen hands. There is a very strong feeling of being watched from the shadows and several shadow figures have also been spotted in a number of places around the prison.
