I have looked into this problem and it seems pretty common on this spectre model. The only thing that happens when the power button is pressed is the three blinks from the led power light. I have connected and disconnected the battery, attempted a hard reset, charged it over night, and have checked the voltage on the battery to make sure it had juice (10.46v out of the rated 11.4v and it doesn't increase after being plugged in for a while). I'm afraid it may be the motherboard. If anyone has experience with this problem please let me know what the cause and solution may be.

Prostar Computer

It sure sounds like main board. The blinking light and no POST is usually indicative of hardware failure. You can see if a local tech can fix it (possibly a reflow), otherwise it will require a replacement board.

How to Turn on an HP Laptop

What to Know

  • Press the power button to turn on your HP laptop.
  • If it doesn’t turn on, make sure it’s charged, or has the power cable plugged in (make sure you're using the right charger).
  • If it doesn't turn on, try disconnecting other devices and trying again..

This guide will walk you through how to turn on your HP laptop, and some of the things you can try if it doesn’t turn on.

The only real way to turn on most HP laptops is by pressing the power button. If your laptop is in sleep mode, you may just be able to open the lid, but if it’s powered down, then you’ll need to press the power button.

Jon Martindale

Depending on which HP laptop you have, the power button will be located in slightly different places. Some have it on the side, others on one of the corners on the back, while others still have it located just above the keyboard on the bottom half of the laptop.

If you need help finding your laptop’s power button, refer to the manufacturer’s manual, or check out HP's support site for documentation .

What Do I Do If My HP Laptop Won’t Turn On?

If you press the power button and your HP laptop doesn’t turn on, it may not be broken. There are a number of steps you can take to try to fix the problem.

Plug in its charger and try to turn on the HP laptop again. It may be that it was just out of battery. If the laptop turns on, but won’t stay on when the power cable isn’t plugged in, you may have a faulty battery.

Make sure you’re using the right charger. Many laptop chargers look the same. If you can, try using a different one, or a different USB-C cable, if possible.

Double check that the screen isn’t just turned off . Do you hear the fan spin up? Try turning up the brightness on the main screen, or checking any external displays to see if they’re showing the laptop running. Try plugging in an external monitor to see if that gets you a picture.

Remove any external drives, media, or accessories, and disconnect the laptop from any docking station, adapter, or hub. Sometimes external devices can cause errors which block a laptop from booting up. Once everything is unplugged (except for power), try again to turn it on.

Try a hard restart: remove the charger and battery (if you can), then press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. This will drain any residual charge from the laptop.

If you get specific beeps when you try to start the laptop, those are POST codes which can give you a clue as to what’s wrong.

Check that the vents are clear from dust and that the laptop hasn’t overheated. If your HP laptop gets too hot, it may shut down and refuse to boot to protect its components. Use compressed air to clean out any dust build up if it’s a problem.

If none of the above works, you’ll need to try taking the laptop in for repair. If it’s under warranty , consider taking it back to the retailer, or HP, otherwise find a well-reviewed and qualified repair shop.

The steps to enable Wi-Fi are the same for all Windows devices, so follow the instructions for enabling Wi-Fi on a Dell laptop . Some HP laptops may have a physical Wi-Fi switch that must be turned on.

The steps for enabling Bluetooth on Windows 10 are the same for all PCs. Enabling Bluetooth on Windows 7 is a little different.

Open the Windows Device Manager and select Human Interface Devices , choose your touch screen display, then right-click and select Disable device .

[Solved] HP Spectre Not Turning On (Caused & Solutions)

If you are on the hunt for a lightweight, fast, and reliable laptop with great features, HP Spectre is an excellent choice for personal, work, or gaming use.

Yet, just like other brands, this laptop is not exempted from confronting issues that can cause you a throbbing headache! And, one of such is its occasional failure to turn on.

hp spectre not turning on

Why Is HP Spectre Not Turning On?

HP Spectre is not turning on if it has problems with its battery, CMOS battery, electrical outlet, AC adapter, or power port. Likewise, it may have issues with its other hardware such as screen, cooling ventilators, motherboard, processor, video card, hard drive, or RAM.

Below are the possible reasons why your HP Spectre won’t power up after you press its power button.

When troubleshooting your HP Spectre, one of the basic things that you need to check first is its battery. Is your laptop’s battery in its full working condition?

It may be drained needing charging, not properly installed, or even defective. All these will prevent your HP Spectre from powering up and operating as you wish.

CMOS Battery

Your HP Spectre may also not boot if its CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) battery is dead already. This battery stores BIOS settings in the motherboard.

This will most likely be defective if you are using your laptop without the battery or when you did not turn it on for quite a long time.

Electrical Outlet

A faulty electrical outlet can avert the flicking on of your laptop that needs charging. Your device’s battery is drained so you connect it to its AC adapter and plug it into a power supply that you thought is working. The result? A still drained battery.

A defective electrical outlet will not charge your laptop’s battery, thus, there is no way it will turn on no matter how long you charge it.

After ruling out the possible problems with the battery and electrical outlet, the AC adapter of your HP Spectre can be another reason why it is not booting up.

Even if there is enough electricity from the power outlet, your laptop will not charge if the main tool for charging it (which is the AC adapter) is defective! You need to check your adapter’s pin and cord for some damage.

The power port of your HP Spectre may be the one to blame for why it is not turning on. If this port is defective, then you simply cannot charge your laptop’s battery.

The internal hardware of your laptop can also be the culprit for its screwup! You need the help of a professional technician if the problem is rooting from the hardware as it may be a critical issue needing crucial tests and replacement.

Another reason why your laptop will not flick on is its damaged screen.

It is a common assumption that when the display of your device is black, it is turned off. Be more observant; if the keyboard keys and power button lights are lit up and you can hear the fan and other noises, then your laptop is already powered up but has issues with its display adapter.

2. Cooling Ventilators / Fan

If your device has issues with its cooling ventilators or fan, expect it to experience overheating. Your HP Spectre has a special safety circuit to break off its power if its components are subject to too much heat.

3. Motherboard, Processor, Video Card, Hard Drive, or RAM

Your laptop may be facing serious issues with its hardware if simple troubleshooting is not working for it.

For instance, if you have changed your hard drive or RAM, your HP Spectre will not turn on if they are not compatible or faulty. For the motherboard and processor, they may need some checking as they might be the ones damaged.

How To Fix HP Spectre That Is Not Turning On?

Most probably, the first thing that will pop up in your mind if you are experiencing issues with your laptop is the cost of repair which can be fairly expensive!

Before thinking of bringing your HP Spectre to a professional technician, you might want to check first some of the suggestions below for easy fixes that will not break your bank!

The battery of your laptop can be the simplest and most common reason why it is not turning on.

If it is just drained, you need to charge it for a couple of hours. Just connect the AC adapter to your device’s charging port and then charge the adapter to the electrical outlet. Once charged enough, you can turn on your laptop as usual and it will power up for sure.

If the battery is defective, you must buy a new one to replace it. To test if you really need a replacement, remove the battery of your HP Spectre and charge it. If it turns on without the battery, your laptop is definitely in good condition aside from this culprit!

Many are unaware of the impact of a faulty CMOS battery on a laptop’s operation. Do not worry much as HP enables its users to do replacements or upgrades if needed so you do not need to buy a new one right away.

The CMOS battery is a budget-friendly piece of hardware that you can replace by yourself. Follow the simple steps below if you want to do the fixing!

First, rub your hands on a metal surface to dismiss their possible static electricity.

Second, shut down your laptop and disconnect it from everything.

Flip your HP Spectre over and use a screwdriver to remove the laptop case. Then, remove the battery of your laptop.

On the motherboard, locate and remove the CMOS battery. This battery looks like a button or coin. Replace the new CMOS battery after.

Reinstall the battery and reattach the casings. Plug your laptop into its AC adapter and turn it on.

The electrical outlet is highly important in charging your HP Spectre to power it up. One simple way to test if the outlet is working fine is by plugging other appliances into it. If the machines did not work, the outlet is definitely defective.

You can just connect the AC adapter of your laptop to another electrical outlet to charge it. If there is no other available socket, you should seek the help of a professional electrician as this is highly dangerous to fix on your own.

The AC adapter that you are using for your HP Spectre might be defective and fails to charge your laptop’s battery. For safety reasons, do not use the damaged AC adapter anymore.

Likewise, make sure that the power cord can supply the needed voltage that your HP Spectre needs. If the current power supply is not compatible, you will not be able to successfully charge your device.

You need to buy a new AC adapter that is compatible with your laptop. As much as possible, purchase an HP AC adapter also but if not, make sure to buy a good quality brand.

If the power port is defective, your laptop will not be charged fully and boost up despite using a functional battery and AC adapter. The defective power port simply fails to transfer the energy from the power supply to the battery.

To solve this, you need to bring your HP Spectre to a technician as this can only be resolved by replacing a new port.

Other Hardware

If the root of the problem is the screen of your HP Spectre, you need the help of a technician as replacements of parts are needed. You might need to replace the screen’s inverter, brightness button, or LCD panel.

Cooling Ventilators / Fan

If an overheating issue is causing the failure to power up, you can try some simple steps to cool down your HP Spectre’s system.

When using it, make sure that its ventilations are not blocked. As much as possible, always check the fan if you are using it on top of a soft surface. You can also use a laptop cooling pad if it is frequently experiencing overheating.

If your laptop suddenly dies, give time to cool it down first before trying to turn it on again. You should also clean the vents of your device as dust, hair, or other particles might be the cause of overheating.

If the ventilation becomes a real headache, your laptop might have a faulty fan. You should bring it to a technician as a new fan is needed for replacement.

Motherboard, Processor, Video Card, Hard Drive, or RAM

Your HP Spectre might not power up if there are problems with any of this internal hardware. They might be defective or incompatible. You need to check them one by one to find which one is causing the problem.

If you installed a new hard drive or RAM, it might be faulty or not compatible with your HP Spectre. Try putting back the old component that you removed and see if your laptop will work again. If it did, you just need to get a new part that is working.

If the motherboard is damaged, you need professional help. Speak to HP’s customer service about replacement and warranty information if your laptop is still covered.

Disconnect Devices

There are instances when your HP Spectre can be quite sensitive. If you forgot to disconnect other devices from it such as a memory card or a USB drive, it might not turn on properly.

You should disconnect any devices from it as the BIOS might be attempting to power up from a removable storage device. Once you have disconnected all external devices, boot up your laptop again.

Use a rescue disc

You can also use a rescue disc if your HP Spectre won’t boot. This will fix problems with the Windows Operating System. For instance, it can scan and terminate malware that can be the culprit of your laptop’s problem.

Remove memory cards from the card reader slot.

Disconnect all nonessential peripheral devices, such as printers, scanners, external hard drives, and USB flash drives.

With the AC adapter unplugged, press and hold the power button for approximately 15 seconds.

Reconnect the AC adapter, and then turn on the computer.

If an error message is displayed, see Troubleshooting Error Messages on a Black Screen During Startup or Boot .

Otherwise, continue with the troubleshooting procedures in this document.

Connect an external monitor to test the screen

The screen might remain black when there is a corrupted graphics driver or a problem with the LCD screen back light. To test the screen, attach an external monitor and restart the computer. This test is helpful if the screen is black, but you can hear that the computer is operating.

If you do not have an external monitor, it might be possible to see an image by switching to low-resolution mode. To change the resolution, turn on the computer, and then press the f8 key. If the screen is working at the BIOS level, a text screen is displayed and you can select the Enable low-resolution video option. If the screen is not working at the BIOS level, contact an authorized repair center.

Connect an external monitor to the laptop. See HP PCs - Connecting a monitor, projector, or TV (Windows) for instructions.

hp spectre not turning on

If an image is displayed on the external monitor, there might be a graphics driver conflict with the notebook LCD screen. With the external monitor connected, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads . Download and install the latest graphics and chipset drivers for your specific computer. If an updated BIOS version is available, see HP Consumer Notebook PCs - Updating the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) (Windows) or HP Business Notebook PCs - Updating the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) to update the BIOS.

If the screen is still black after updating the chipset and graphics drivers and BIOS, continue to the next procedure.

If an image is not displayed on the external monitor, the LCD screen might be defective. Contact HP for technical assistance or send the notebook for service.

Recover the notebook BIOS

When you upgrade the BIOS on your notebook, your hard drive stores a copy of the previous BIOS version. As long as the hard drive remains functional, you can recover and install the last good version of the BIOS.

Follow these steps even if the monitor is blank.

Connect the notebook to a power source using the AC adapter.

While the notebook is off, press and hold the Windows + b key press combination.

While still pressing the Windows + b key press combination, press the power button for one second, and then release the keys.

The power light remains on, and the screen remains blank for about 40 seconds. You might hear beeping sounds. The HP BIOS Update screen is displayed, and the BIOS update begins.

Test for memory module problems

When you try to turn on a computer, one of the first hardware tests performed is the memory check. If the start-up test cannot access the memory chips, the testing stops and no additional actions can be taken. When you press the power button, the LEDs might glow for a moment and a fan might start to spin, but then all action stops.

This problem must be resolved before you can boot into the BIOS or Windows and perform any other tests.

Some notebook PCs have two memory slots and two memory modules. If you experience a black screen error, the problem could be with one of the memory modules or with one of the memory slots, or one of the modules might not be seated properly in the slot.

To determine if a memory module is causing the failure, try to isolate the problem by using the following procedures.

The memory module compartment on most notebooks is located on the bottom of the case. The exact position varies by model. However, on some models, the memory compartment is under the keyboard. See your User Guide or Maintenance and Service Guide for the exact location of memory modules on your notebook.

Testing memory in HP PC Hardware Diagnostics

The Memory Tests include a Fast Test, Quick Test, and an Extensive Test. First run the Fast Test (three to five minutes). If the Fast Test does not find a problem, run the Quick Test (about 10 minutes). If the Quick Test does not find a problem, run the Extensive Test (about 45 minutes) which also has a Loop Until Error option.

Follow these steps to run the Fast Test:

Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.

Turn on the computer and immediately press esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the f2 key.

On the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu, click Component Tests .

On the Component Tests menu, click Memory .

Click Fast Test .

Memory Fast Test

Click Run once . The Fast Test begins.

When the Fast Test is complete, the screen displays the results.

If the memory passes the Fast Test but there is still a problem with the computer memory, run the Quick Test.

If the memory passes the Quick Test but there is still a problem with the computer memory, run the Extensive Test. This test can take 45 minutes or longer.

If the memory fails a test, do the following:

Click Troubleshoot .

Follow the on-screen instructions to attempt to resolve the problem, and then click Yes .

If the problem is not resolved, click Yes to contact HP Customer Support.

Write down or copy the failure ID (24-digit code) and product ID for when you contact HP Customer Support. The information is also available in Test Logs on the main menu.

If your computer is online, click NEXT to go to the HP Customer Support website.

If your computer is offline, use your mobile device to scan the provided QR Code and access HP Customer Support.

If the memory passes the Extensive Test but there is still a problem with the computer memory, test for memory problems using the memory self test.

Test for memory problems using the memory self test

If the computer can access part of the memory, it might be possible to access the BIOS Setup Utility and perform a memory self test to identify other memory issues. If the computer cannot boot to the BIOS Setup Utility, try removing and reseating the memory and the hard drive, and then repeat the following steps to perform the memory self test.

Connect the AC adapter to the computer.

Turn off the computer and wait 5 seconds.

Press the power button to start the computer, and then repeatedly press the f10 key to enter the BIOS Setup Utility.

In the BIOS Setup Utility, use the right arrow and left arrow keys to navigate through the menu selection to find and select Diagnostics .

Use the up arrow and down arrow keys to select Memory Test .

Press enter , and then select Yes to perform the memory test.

After the test is completed, press f10 to Save and Exit , then press enter to Exit Saving Changes .

If the test fails, one or more of the memory modules might not be seated properly. Check for and reseat loose memory modules.

Reseat the memory modules

A loose memory module might cause your notebook to fail to start or display an image. To fix this, take the memory module out of the memory slot and then reseat it. See your User Guide or Maintenance and Service Guide to find the memory module location on your notebook.

Some computers might not have a cover that provides access to the memory. Have the computer serviced if you cannot access the memory.

Removing and reseating memory modules requires the use of tools to partially disassemble the computer. If necessary, take the computer to an HP authorized service provider for technical service.

On the HP Customer Support page, enter your serial number, product number, or product name in the Search field and click Submit . Alternatively, you can click Or, let HP detect your product to have your computer information detected for you.

Click the link on the search results page that matches your computer.

Click Manuals , and the click either Maintenance and Service Guide or Upgrading and Servicing Guide to review specific memory reseating procedures for your computer.

After reviewing the steps in the maintenance and service guide, if you are not confident in performing the memory reseat procedure yourself, contact an HP authorized distributor for technical assistance.

If someone other than HP reseats the memory, any damage caused by the memory or by a person trying to reseat the memory is excluded from coverage under the product warranty. The customer assumes all risk and liability for damages for any such action.

If the computer fails to boot to the Windows desktop, test each memory module and memory slot if there are more than one. Otherwise, test for hard drive problems.

Test a memory module

Only one memory module is required for the computer to operate. If two memory modules are installed, each memory module should be tested in the computer independently of the other.

To test a memory module, use the following steps:

With the AC adapter and battery disconnected, remove all memory modules, and then insert one memory module into the first slot.

Connect the AC adapter and turn on the notebook. If the computer starts normally, the memory module is functioning correctly.

Remove the AC adapter and turn off the notebook.

Then, repeat the same procedure for the second module. If the computer starts normally, both memory modules are good.

Reseat all memory modules, connect the AC adapter, and then turn on the notebook.

If the computer starts into the Windows desktop, no further action is needed. However, if the computer still stops at the black screen, continue by testing the memory slots.

Test a memory slot

To test each memory slot individually, use the following procedure.

After testing the memory modules, turn off the notebook, and then disconnect the AC adapter.

Insert one memory module into the second slot, connect the AC adapter, and then turn on the notebook.

If the computer starts normally, the memory slot functions correctly.

Then, repeat the same procedure for the second slot.

If the computer starts normally, you have verified that both memory modules and memory slots function correctly.

Reseat the memory, connect the AC adapter, and then turn on the notebook. If you do not feel comfortable reseating the memory yourself, take the computer to a computer retailer and ask them to reseat it for you.

Test for hard drive problems

A computer might fail to start due to an issue with the hard drive. To test for hard drive problems, you can use these procedures.

Test for hard drive problems with the hard drive self test

When you try to turn on a computer, one of the preliminary hardware tests performed is the hard drive connection check.

If the start-up test cannot access the hard drive, the testing stops and no additional actions can be taken. When you press the power button, the LEDs might glow for a moment and a fan might start to spin, but then all action stops. Removing and reseating the hard drive can restore the connection and allow you to perform other hard drive tests.

Many computer problems are related to soft failures (or degraded performance) on the hard drive. The HP Hard Drive Self Test repairs soft errors on the hard drive, but it does not report the errors. After the test is complete, restart the computer to see if the test repaired the problem you were experiencing.

Use the following steps to test the hard drive in a computer using the hard drive self test.

Press the power button to start the computer, and then repeatedly press the f10 key to enter the BIOS Setup Menu.

Use the left arrow and right arrow keys to navigate through the menu selection to find and select the Primary Hard Drive Self Test option. Depending on your BIOS, this option might be found following Diagnostics or Tools .

Select Primary Hard Drive Self Test , and then press the enter key to start the test.

The exact wording for your particular BIOS might be slightly different.

The Hard Drive Self Test performs a Quick Test followed by a Comprehensive Test . During each test, the window displays a status bar and an estimated time to completion.

If any test fails, contact HP service and support for instructions on how to order a replacement hard drive.

If all the tests pass, the hard drive is not damaged. Test for hard drive problems using HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.

Test for hard drive problems using HP PC Hardware Diagnostics

HP PC Hardware Diagnostics provides multiple tests to test the hard drive on your computer and confirm hardware failures. First, run the Quick Test (two to three minutes). If the Quick Test does not find a problem, run the Extensive Test (two hours or more). It can run once or loop until an error occurs.

For information about HP PC Hardware Diagnostics, including installation instructions for the latest version, see HP PCs - Testing for hardware failures in Windows 10 .

On the main menu, click Component Tests .

Running Component Tests

In the Component Tests menu, click Storage > Quick Test .

Click Run once. The Quick Test begins.

Hard Drive Quick Test

If the computer has more than one hard drive, select the drive to test. To test all the hard drives, select Test All Hard Drives .

When the test is complete, the screen displays the results. Test results are also available in the Test Logs on the main menu.

If the hard drive passes the Quick Test, but there is still a problem with the hard drive, run the Extensive Test. This test includes the SMART Check, Short DST, Optimized DST, and Long DST. To run these tests individually, select them from the Storage Tests menu.

If the hard drive fails a test, click Troubleshoot .

If your computer is online, click NEXT to go to the HP Customer Support website. If your computer is offline, use your mobile device to scan the provided QR Code to access HP Customer Support.

Contact HP Customer Support

Contact HP Customer Support for further assistance if the issue persists.

Go to HP Customer Support - Contact .

Common Causes of HP Spectre x360 Not Turning On

The HP Spectre x360 is a powerful laptop that is designed to provide users with a reliable computing experience.

However, like any other electronic device, it can sometimes experience issues that prevent it from turning on.

If your HP Spectre x360 is not turning on, there are several common causes that you should consider.

One of the most common causes of an HP Spectre x360 not turning on is a drained battery.

If the laptop has been left unused for an extended period of time, the battery may have drained completely and will need to be recharged.

To check if this is the case, try plugging the laptop into a power source and see if it turns on.

Another common cause of an HP Spectre x360 not turning on is a faulty power adapter.

If the power adapter is not providing enough power to the laptop, it will not be able to turn on.

To check if this is the case, try using a different power adapter and see if the laptop turns on.

Finally, a hardware issue could be preventing the laptop from turning on.

If the laptop has been dropped or exposed to liquid, it is possible that the internal components have been damaged and are preventing the laptop from turning on.

In this case, it is best to take the laptop to a qualified technician for repair.

By considering these common causes, you should be able to identify the issue preventing your HP Spectre x360 from turning on.

How to Diagnose and Fix HP Spectre x360 Power Issues

First, check the power adapter.

Make sure the power adapter is securely connected to the laptop and to the wall outlet.

If the connection is loose, try plugging it in more securely.

If the connection is secure, try using a different power adapter or wall outlet.

If the laptop is not turning on, try removing the battery and then reinserting it.

If the laptop still does not turn on, try replacing the battery.

Select “Power Options” from the search results.

Select “Change plan settings” next to the power plan you are using.

Select “Change advanced power settings”.

Scroll down to “Battery” and expand the menu.

Select “Reset to default settings”.

If the laptop is still not charging, try resetting the BIOS.

To do this, turn off the laptop and disconnect the power adapter.

Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.

Reconnect the power adapter and turn on the laptop.

If the laptop is still not charging, it may be a hardware issue.

Contact HP Support for assistance.

1. Have you checked the power cord and adapter to make sure they are securely connected?

2. Have you tried pressing and holding the power button for at least 10 seconds to reset the laptop?

3. Have you tried removing the battery and then reinserting it to see if that helps?

After considering all the possible causes of why your HP Spectre x360 is not turning on, it is likely that the issue is related to a hardware failure.
