HP Spectre 13-v000 Disassembly and SSD, RAM Upgrade Options

HP Spectre 13-v000 was launched in November 2016. The laptop comes with a 13.3-inch widescreen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080.

It is powered by Intel Core i5-6200U 2.30 GHz processor (with Intel HD Graphics 520) and it comes with 8GB of RAM onboard.

The laptop runs Windows 10 Home Basic 64bit and is powered by a 7.7V, 38Wh Li-polymer battery. It measures of 325 x 229 x 10.4 and weight of 1.11kg.

Hello, I have a question. It turns out that my HP Specter 13 is getting really hot (especially when it’s plugged in), I feel like one of the fans isn’t sucking .. is that normal? I’m thinking of opening it, cleaning it and maybe changing the thermal paste. Will serve?

Yes, you can remove the heat sink and fan, use a brush to clean the dust on the fan, and use a rag to clear the old thermal paste on the heat sink (CPU and GPU), then apply new thermal paste to your CPU and GPU, This will significantly reduce the temperature of your laptop.

hello, is there any way to take apart the LCD/keyboard/cover assembly of the HP Spectre 13 Pro? I have a busted LCD screen but the rest is ok and I don’t need to buy an entire assembly. I’ve taken apart plenty of phones and tablets before so I think it’ll be possible to repair by myself. thanks.

How do you replace the display cable?

Replacing the display cable is a very complicated job, so you need to remove the LCD back cover, and the LCD screen, then disconnect the display cable from the LCD screen, and then remove the back cover of the notebook and disconnect the other end of the display cable from the motherboard, if you are not a professional technician, it is not recommended that you replace the display cable yourself.

This document provides possible solutions to common computer startup issues. Follow the instructions in this document step-by-step to help isolate the problem and find the most appropriate help.

Remove discs and devices and perform a hard reset

Before troubleshooting startup issues, remove or disconnect all discs and devices from the computer.

Turn off the computer.

Disconnect the AC adapter.

Remove any discs from the disc drive.

Remove memory cards from the card reader slot.

Disconnect all nonessential devices such as printers, scanners, external hard drives, and USB flash drives.

Do not disconnect your mouse, keyboard, or monitor.

With the AC adapter unplugged, press and hold the power button for approximately 15 seconds.

Reconnect the AC adapter, and then turn on the computer.

If the computer starts, reconnect the devices one at a time to determine which disc or device is causing the problem. Continue with the troubleshooting to test the hardware for failures.

If Windows does not start but the screen turns on, continue with the troubleshooting to test the hardware for failures.

If there is no noise from the computer case or fans, the lights on the computer do not turn on (including the keyboard lights), and the screen does not receive a video signal, your computer might not be receiving power. Contact HP for further support.

Test for hardware failures when Windows doesn't start

Use the following hardware test procedures.

Run the Fast Test (about 4 minutes)

When Windows doesn't start, begin the hardware diagnostics by running the Fast Test. The Fast Test is separated into a 1st pass and 2nd pass, with each pass running multiple tests.

Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.

Turn on the computer and immediately press esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the f2 key.

On the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu, click System Tests .

If the diagnostics are not available when using the F2 menu, run the diagnostics from a USB drive. To download the latest version of the diagnostics, go to the HP Hardware Diagnostics website. For instructions, see HP PCs - Testing for hardware failures .

Click Fast Test > Run once .

While the test is running, the time remaining and test result for each component is displayed on the screen.

If a component fails a test, write down the failure ID (24-digit code) for when you contact HP Customer Support. The information is also available in Test Logs on the main menu.

If no test fails, click Continue > Run once to run the 2nd Pass of the System Fast Test.

If no system component fails, run the Extensive Test.

Run the Extensive Test (2 hours or more)

Run the Extensive Test if no system component failed during the Fast Test.

On the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu, click System Tests > Extensive Test .

Click either Run once or Loop until error .

Reset the computer when Windows does not start normally

Use Windows Recovery Environment to reset the system when Windows does not start normally.

Choose a method to open Windows Recovery Environment .

Restart your computer, and then immediately press the f11 key repeatedly.

On the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot .

On the Troubleshoot screen, select Reset this PC .

Follow the instructions to reset your computer. This might take a few minutes.

Choose the symptom that describes your problem

If the basic troubleshooting steps did not resolve your issue, choose from the following common boot problems to find more advanced troubleshooting.

Laptop does not turn on when AC adapter is connected

If your notebook does not turn on when the AC adapter is connected, there might be an issue with your AC adapter.

To learn more about troubleshooting the AC adapter, see HP Notebook PCs - Using and troubleshooting the AC power adapter .

Lights blink or speaker beeps but the computer does not start

HP computers use blinking LEDs to identify startup errors.

If the LEDs near the caps lock or num lock keys blink (usually 1 to 8 blinks in a series) when you try to start the computer, go to HP Desktop PCs - Computer beeps or a light blinks during startup or HP Notebook PCs - Computer beeps or a light blinks during startup .

If a white AC adapter light blinks when a new notebook computer is used for the first time, the battery is still in Shipping Mode. To resolve this issue, turn off the notebook, connect the notebook to AC power, allow the battery to charge for at least 30 minutes, and then start the computer.

The laptop starts, but the screen is blank or unresponsive

When you press the power button, lights blink or turn on, a fan spinning sound is heard, but the screen remains black, and the notebook does not start.

If the computer is on, but the screen remains blank, go to HP PCs - Computer starts but the screen remains blank (Windows 11, 10) .

The computer locks up at the HP logo screen or the Windows loading screen

If the computer locks up at the HP logo screen or the Windows loading screen, try cleaning the computer vents with compressed air.

Restart the computer. If Windows starts, you are done. If Windows does not start, go to HP PCs - Testing for hardware failures .

An error message is displayed on a black screen

Sometimes an error message is displayed on a black screen when Windows does not start. If the error message lists a hardware component, such as a fan or BIOS, test those components and service the component as necessary.

Moscow has the largest car-sharing park in the world with more than 15 000 cars waiting for you to be rented for any amount of time, starting from 1 minute. Cars can usually be left almost anywhere within MKAD and in Moscow airports. City parking is also free for those cars. To be able to rent a car, you should register yourself in an app of the company providing the service. There are more than 15 car-sharing operators in Moscow, here are the market leaders:

Hertz, Europcar, Sixt and Avis have offices in three of four Moscow airports ( Sheremetyevo ,  Domodedovo and Vnukovo ). Budget has no offices in Russia. It is always cheaper to rent a car using company local site, not the international one. For a night pick up you should contact local rent office a few days upon arrival.

Roads & regulations in Russia

Vnukovo exit road

• Driving is right-sided.
• In the built up areas the speed limit is 60 kmph.
• In none built up areas – 90 kmph.
• On the off-city highways – 110 kmph.
• Some highways around Moscow have 130 kmph limit (marked with green signs).
• The minimum age to drive a car is 18 (16 for motorcycles, 20 for buses).
• Wearing of seat belts is mandatory in both front and back seats.
• Speaking on a mobile phone or even holding it in a hand while driving is a serious offence.
• Turning right at a red light is not allowed when there is no special green arrow traffic light.
• It is illegal for children under the age of 12 to travel in the front seat.
• Dipped headlights must be used during the day.
• It is illegal to drive a car with mud on the license plates.

Russian registration certificate, driver license and vehicle insurance

While driving in Russia every driver is required to have the following set of documents:

• Passport ( Russian Visa and migration card is a must for foreigners).
• Driving license (if you plan to stay in Moscow for more than 6 months, your national license will not be enough, you have to obtain Russian license).
• Registration certificate (pink laminated card).
• Vehicle insurance (green or purple paper or its digital copy).
• A power of Attorney (only for rented cars).

Traffic police officers can stop every car just to check the documents. Every road inspector must introduce himself pointing his title and last name.

The cameras can record not only speeding but other minor violations as well. Driving along the bus lanes, driving in the oncoming lane, incorrect parking or even driving without a full stop where there’s a stop sign – all those violations are in their competence. Numerous traffic cameras are installed in all city regions along every major road. The detailed list of cameras and places of their location is presented on this site . After the camera registered a violation, the appropriate fine is sent to the owner of the car by post and must be paid for a one-month term (there’s a 50% discount if you pay within 2 weeks). For serious violations (Russia has a zero tolerance policy on drinking and driving), the driving license can be confiscated by a court.

All the fines should be paid only at the bank or via internet, so never give any money (or bank cards) to the road inspectors.

Moscow has paid parking in the city center, within the Garden Ring. There are several parking zones and also special fares for specific streets. Parking within the Boulevard Ring may cost up to 380 roubles (€5) per hour, 50 roubles (€1) for the first hour and 150 roubles (€2) for every next hour within the Garden Ring and 60 rubles (€1) per hour within the TTK ring.

Moscow has a very hard traffic situation. To avoid long traffic jams use Yandex.Maps service. It offers reliable live traffic map (apps are available for iOS , Android  and  Windows Phone ) with online navigation. Offline Moscow map is available. It is the most popular and up to date service. Yandex can show and search latin-written street names.

Getting Russian driver license

A foreigner, temporarily staying in Russia can drive with an International Driving Permit (IDP) or national driving license, translated into Russian and notarized. Foreigners that are going to stay in Russia for more than six months must obtain a Russian driving license. To apply for a Russian driving license, you must provide the following documents:

• Passport and valid Russian visa and legally certified copy.
• The document confirming a place of continuous or temporary registration.
• Medical certificate (available from any major health clinic).
• National driving license, legally certified copy and translation.
• Photo of 4х6 cm.
• The receipt confirming payment of the state duty.
• Application for passing the examination.
• The receipt on examination payment.

If your national driving license is still valid, you will only have to pass a general driving test. If your license has expired, you must also pass a practical driving exam to get the Russian license. However, to do so, you must speak fluent Russian: the theoretical and practical instruction is conducted only in Russian. If you want to get your first driving license in Russia, you should also go to a local driving school, pass a medical test, have about two months of theoretical and practical driving instruction, and pass state driving exams.

Winter driving in Moscow

Driving in Moscow in winter could be a difficult thing, especially if you are not used to such weather conditions. During the winter period, remember to keep in your car a good snow brush and an anti-frost windshield washer fluid. Before winter arrives, have your car protected with winter tires. Studded tires are allowed and highly recommended outside of Moscow. It is better to change tires in advance – in autumn, and not to wait until the first snow. Otherwise, you run the risk of spending a lot of time in queues to service stations. Do not hurry to change winter tires in spring; it is better to wait until April.

Moscow-City: 7 surprising facts about the Russian capital’s business center

1. Guinness World Record in highlining

The record was set in 2019 by a team of seven athletes from Russia, Germany, France and Canada. They did it on September 8, on which the ‘Moscow-City Day’ is celebrated. The cord was stretched at the height of 350 m between the ‘OKO’ (“Eye”) and ‘Neva Towers’ skyscrapers. The distance between them is 245 m. The first of the athletes to cross was Friede Kuhne from Germany. The athletes didn't just walk, but also performed some daredevil tricks. Their record is 103 meters higher than the previous one set in Mexico City in December 2016.

2. Domination of Europe's top-10 highest skyscrapers

7 out of 10 Europe’s highest skyscrapers are located in Moscow-City. Earlier, the  ‘Federation Tower’ complex’s ‘Vostok’ (“East”) skyscraper was the considered the tallest in Europe.

However, in 2018, the construction of the 462 meter tall ‘Lakhta Center’ in Saint-Petersburg was completed, pushing ‘Vostok’ (374 m) into 2nd place. The 3rd place is taken by OKO’s southern tower (354 m).

3. The unrealized ‘Rossiya’ tower

If all the building plans of Moscow-City were realized, the ‘Lakhta Center’ in St. Petersburg wouldn't have a chance to be Europe's highest skyscraper. Boris Tkhor, the architect who designed the concept of Moscow-City, had planned for the ‘Rossiya’ tower to be the tallest. In his project, it was a 600 meter tall golden cylindrical skyscraper ending with a spire that was inspired by traditional Russian bell towers. Then, the project was reinvented by famous British architect Sir Norman Foster. He had designed ‘Rossiya’ as a pyramid ending with a spire. The skyscraper itself would have been 612 meters tall, and the height including the spire would have reached 744,5 meters (for comparison, the ‘Burj Khalifa’ in Dubai, UAE, would have been just 83,5 meters taller). Unfortunately, the investors faced a lot of economic problems, due to the 2008 financial crisis, so the ‘Rossiya’ skyscraper was never built. A shopping mall and the ‘Neva Towers’ complex was constructed at its place in 2019.

4. Changed appearance of ‘Federation Tower’

In its first project, the ‘Federation Tower’ was designed to resemble a ship with a mast and two sails. The mast was to be represented by a tall glass spire with passages between the towers. It was planned to make a high-speed lift in it. The top of the spire was going to be turned into an observation deck. But the ship lost its mast in the middle of its construction. Experts at the Moscow-city Museum based in the ‘Imperia’ (“Empire”) tower say, that the construction of the spire was stopped, firstly, due to fire safety reasons and secondly, because it posed a threat to helicopter flights – the flickering glass of the spire could potentially blind the pilots. So, the half-built construction was disassembled. However, an observation deck was opened in the ‘Vostok’ tower.

5. Open windows of ‘Federation Tower’

We all know that the windows of the upper floors in different buildings don’t usually open. Experts say that it’s not actually for people’s safety. Falling from a big height is likely to be fatal in any building. The actual reason is the ventilation system. In a skyscraper, it’s managed with a mechanical system, and the building has its own climate. But in the ‘Zapad’ (“West”) tower of the ‘Federation Tower’ complex, the windows can open. The 62nd and last floor of the tower are taken up by a restaurant called ‘Sixty’. There, the windows are equipped with a special hydraulic system. They open for a short period of time accompanied by classical music, so the guests can take breathtaking photos of Moscow.

6. Broken glass units of ‘Federation Tower’

The guests of the ‘Sixty’ restaurant at the top of the ‘Zapad’ tower can be surprised to see cracked glass window panes. It is particularly strange, if we take into consideration the special type of this glass. It is extremely solid and can’t be broken once installed. For example, during experiments people threw all sorts of heavy items at the windows, but the glass wouldn’t break. The broken glass units of ‘Zapad’ were already damaged during shipment . As each of them is curved in its own way to make the tower’s curvature smooth, making a new set of window panes and bringing them to Russia was deemed too expensive . Moreover, the investors had financial problems (again, due to the 2008 financial crisis), so the ‘Vostok’ tower even stood unfinished for several years. Eventually, the cracked window panes were installed in their place.

7. The highest restaurant in Europe

‘Birds’, another restaurant in Moscow-City, is remarkable for its location. It was opened at the end of 2019 on the 84th floor of the ‘OKO’ complex’s southern tower. Guests at the restaurant can enjoy an amazing panoramic view at a height of 336 meters. On January 28, the experts of ‘Kniga Recordov Rossii’ (“Russian Records Book”) declared ‘Birds’ the highest restaurant in Europe, a step toward an application for a Guinness World Record.
