My experience is that ghost-touching is generally a hardware problem.

If, however, it only happens while the phone is plugged in, it may be a bad cable. Try a different one.

Part 1. What Causes Ghost Touching on iPhone

Ghost touch on iPhone is a common problem that affects all iPhone models, but it's highly prevalent with the iPhone X , forcing Apple to acknowledge the flaw a year after its release. Apart from iPhone X, the issue is also present in iPhone 5 to 8, XR, and XS, as well as the newer models such as iPhone 11 to 13.

The main cause of ghost touching on iPhone is usually a faulty display or damaged screen components . When the phone's screen components are not seated properly, it sends confusing signals to the motherboard, which makes the phone react abnormally. Here are some additional causes of iPhone ghost touching:

Manufacturing defects: In some cases, iPhone ghost touch might occur due to a manufacturing error. There are many areas where the iPhone might get manufacturing defects, from data analytics and programming errors to back office and supply chain implications.

Software defects: After upgrading your iOS version, you might experience a glitch that leads to ghost touching. In most cases, new iOS versions come with glitches that can influence the sensitivity of your screen.

Hardware defects: Ghost touch might be caused by hardware issues. Launch Settings > select Privacy or Privacy and Security > Analytics and Improvements > Analytics Data to check hardware defect logs on your iPhone. You will find all your error logs here.

Part 2. Basic Ways to Solve iPhone Ghost Touches

Though iPhone ghost touches affect nearly all iPhone models, iPhone X users can get free screen repair since the company acknowledged the issue on their official support page. Unfortunately, if you have a different model, this service is not available to you, but there are several basic ways to solve the issue on your own.

These tips don't require any technical expertise, and you can try them all out until you find one that works.

If you have never experienced ghost touch before and have not replaced your screen or screen protector and case, the issue could result from debris or dust on your screen. You can fix the problem by cleaning the screen with a screen cleaner and wiping it off with a microfiber fabric.

This solution is especially effective if you experience ghost touch after your iPhone comes into contact with some water.

In some cases, you might purchase a screen protector and case that fits too tightly on your iPhone, which can lead to ghost touching due to the pressure exerted on the phone. Over time, the screen protector collects dust, dirt, or an air bubble between the screen and the tempered glass protector, which can lead to the issue.

Cracks in the screen protector can also cause ghost touching. To fix the problem, you can remove the screen protector and get a case that fits your iPhone perfectly.

Way 3. Reset iPhone’s All Settings

Though you can reset your iPhone settings on your own, it's among the more advanced solutions to iPhone ghost touch because you can quickly lose all your data if not careful. To reset your iPhone's factory settings, navigate to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. By applying this fix, you will lose all your personalized settings and data, so ensure you make a backup before the reset.

You can try to resolve the ghost touch issues by calibrating your iPhone's touchscreen settings. To achieve this, go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Touch Accommodations , then turn on Hold Duration. Click the decrease button or the increment button to adjust the hold duration.

The official solution on Apple's support website for ghost touching issues on all iPhone models is force restarting your phone. Force restarting your iPhone is easy, but the process varies depending on your phone model. Here are the steps for restarting different iPhone models:

iPhone 13/12/11/X, 8 and 8 Plus

Start by pressing the "Volume Up" button and releasing it immediately. Follow it up by pressing the "Volume Down" button and releasing it. After releasing both buttons, press the power/ wake button until the Apple logo appears on the screen.

iPhone 7 and 7 Plus

For iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, hold down the Volume Down together with the Power/ Wake button for at least ten seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen.

iPhone 6 and Earlier Models

If you are using iPhone 6 or earlier models, press and hold the power/wake button and the home button simultaneously for about ten seconds. You can release the buttons as soon as the Apple logo appears on the screen.

Part 3. Practical Ways To Fix iPhone Ghost Touch

If none of the solutions above resolves the issue, you can try out more advanced fixes. However, you need to be careful with these solutions because you could potentially lose your settings and data in the process.

You can leverage the iOS system recovery tool to fix your ghost-touching problem without worrying about data loss. There are numerous iOS recovery tools in the market. Still, tools like Umendit UnicTool are among the best to use because they solve most iPhone issues, such as frozen screen, boot loop , battery drain, and white screen, among other issues.

  • To get started with Umendit UnicTool, follow these steps:

Step 1: Install Umendit On Your PC (Windows or Mac)

Download, install and launch UnicTool Umendit on your computer. There are four options, you can choose "standard mode," which will fix your iPhone without data loss

choose a mode

Step 2: Connect Phone With Laptop

Then connect your iPhone to your PC or Mac using a lightning cable. Click the start button to enter the repair module.

Step 3: Enter In The Recovery Mode

There are two repair modes available on the next interface, standard and deep repair. Standard repair fixes your iPhone issues without data loss, while deep repair wipes off everything.

clean iphone screen

Step 4: Download Firmware

After selecting our preferred repair mode, you need to download your model's firmware package. You can click Import Local Firmware to upload the package if you have already downloaded the firmware package.

download the firmware

Step 5: Repair The Problem

Once you have downloaded/ imported the firmware, you can start repairing your iPhone by clicking Start Standard Repair. Wait a few minutes for the tool to repair your device. Your iPhone will reboot automatically, and everything should be back to normal.

start to fix

Though the chances are slim, there is a chance that you are experiencing ghost touch because of an outdated iOS version. Old iOS versions might have bugs that lead to the issue, and you can try updating your iPhone to the latest version.

Before updating your iOS version, you must ensure your iPhone is fully charged with a stable Wi-Fi network. To update your iOS version to the latest version: Settings > General > software Update > Download and Install .

Way 3. Restore iPhone with iTunes [Data Loss]

Alternatively, you can restore your iPhone to factory settings with iTunes, but there is a high risk of losing all your data unless you have a backup. Restoring your iPhone should only be considered if all the solutions above don't resolve the ghost touch. The steps below will guide you on how to restore your iPhone using iTunes:

  • 1 Connect your iPhone to your PC and open iTunes
  • 2 Open iTunes and click the device tab on the top-left corner
  • 3 Click the Restore iPhone button in the center of the iTunes Summary tab
  • 4 When the pop-up message shows up, click on Restore

If all these solutions fail to resolve the ghost touch flaw, the problem could be more severe and requires to be checked by a technician. If you are experiencing a ghost touch iPhone X issue, you can get a free screen at any Apple Support Store. Other iPhone users can get a free repair if their iPhone is still under warranty.

iPhone ghost touch can be a frustrating flaw, especially if it keeps happening regularly and you can't operate your phone correctly. Fortunately, the above solutions will help you fix the issue without any technical skills. If you are looking for an all-in-one solution that doesn't put your data at risk, you should consider downloading UnicTool Umendit for all your iPhone issues.

IOS 16 UI Lag and Ghost Touch

Please is there any fix or workaround to this? After updating to iOS 16 these problems started to happen on my iPhone XR. I can't use the phone and need it ASAP!

It was working perfectly before the update.

i have iphone x and since i have updated the phone to ios 16 and then ios 16.02 and i could not use the phone at all due to the problems in touch screen and the ghost touch that prohibited me to conduct any activity on the phone and even it sends emails and call people instead of me ! now i moved to an old iphone model with an old ios model till you get this problem fixed appreciate your prompt support

What the heck Apple I literally have the same issue with everyone laggy ghost touches , it starts calling people randomly I have an iPhone 11 and it’s been with me just for 5 months when I update to 16.01 this is what happened!!!!

ios 16 bug ghost touch

Same thing happening to me

ios 16 bug ghost touch

i got same problem in my iphone x

Workaround: Settings > Touch > Accessibility > Touch Accommodation (Turn on Touch Accommodation) > Scroll down and Select “Initial Touch Location” >> Scroll down >> Swipe Gestures (Turn on Swipe Gestures) >> Select “Standard”.

However, even by doing this, it still affects the multi finger function and unable to do activities that requires it. (MOBA/FPS games, Garage band, etc..)

YOOOOOO THIS WORKED FOR ME

ios 16 bug ghost touch

I too tried this. But it doesn’t help much. I still have issue for iPhoneX. this started happening when I moved from ios16 to ios16.1 update. Ghost touch issue. My YouTube app screen zooms in automatically , video gets forwarded , another applications open without me touching once I unlock screen. It is very irritating. no news heard from Apple as well if any software fix been planned to release? Or no news about this critical bug as well.

Hey, same problem over here had latest iOS 15. Was thinking why not update? It worked fine before the update IPhone Xr and had to try the new features. What ever

Tried to reboot it, even factory store, restart and let it have a rest and so on. But still the screen is delayed after touching feels like a ghost has taken over. Has a lot of storage left so it can’t be that’s it’s over used of space

None of the solution above worked Hopes Apple fix this bug regretting updating and have been getting support hopefully they maybe help me solve it.

Yeah me too, 3 days a go i updated to ios 16.0 but my phone got Ghost Touch and Lagging. That makes me spend so much time for restore

has anyone managed to solve?

i have iPhone XR max and it’s clicking things on its own after the update as well. It’s annoying especially when you’re watching YouTube and it spams the skip ahead button. Anyway apple this seems to be a problem with the iPhone XS series so please look into this and fix it

Same problem

I am facing the same problem on my iphone Xs ever since the IOS 16 update. I even tried factory data reset but nothing seems to be working. Its barely usable. the way i was able to reset my phone by using two fingers at once for this ghost touch issue. Im just hoping that IOS 16.1 will fix the issue.

Still happening in 16.0.2, and now we can't roll back to iOS 15 because apple have decided to stop signing 15.6, so now I have a pretty stone in my pocket. Cheers, I hope you enjoy the support nightmare.

I updated the phone today my iPhone XR and the problem is still there is worst even with touch assist.

Same problem on my iPhone Xs, it works normal in the morning when i first start using it and it later stops working properly. It ghost touches everywhere and if I’m doing something the only way to continue is if i turn it of and then back on again. Which helps for a mere 10 seconds until i need to do the same thing again. Yesterday it started calling and texting people randomly when im on WhatsApp or any other app that has those features.

ios 16 bug ghost touch

Exactly the same as on my iPhone XS. I don't know how to solve this anymore. I upgraded to 16.0.2, where I naively thought it would improve. Didn't help

Same here with an iPhone XS. The newest update didn’t fix it sadly..

I am facing the problems (gost touch and also upper part of screen touch isn’t working) on my iPhone 12 pro ever since the IOS 16 update. Its barely usable. 16.0.2 doesn’t help me either. Regretting that I updated 😞

After updating to IOS 16.0.2 my “app switcher bar” hardly works and sometimes the screen doesn’t work except assistive touch on my iphone XS

Same here, iPhone XS Max, aftermarket screen with iOS 16, restored to 15.7, scared update now.

My 12 pro max is almost useless. I practically have to dictate with a mic just to type anything on my phone. Hopefully the issue will be fixed soon. It takes twice as long to type or dictate a message, email or open/close app.

10 Ways to fix ghost touch on iPhone

Ghost figure in a Black iPhone screen with Orange gradient background

Ghost touch is when your iPhone screen starts functioning on its own. Although touchscreen displays have completely changed the way we use phones, they come with drawbacks.

Before we delve deeper into the solutions to fix the ghost touch issue on iPhone, let’s first understand what it is and which devices have experienced the same.

What is ghost touch on iPhone?

Which iphones are affected by ghost touch, how to get rid of ghost touch on your iphone.

As the name suggests, ghost touch is when the screen seems to react to non-existing touches, and the application starts functioning without you doing anything. Ghost touches are bothersome and may necessitate having your iPhone repaired by Apple. However, before attempting some quick fixes, you must first understand what causes ghost touch on iPhones.

Causes of ghost touch on iPhone

  • Replacing or removing the touch screen during repair

Usually, if touch screens have been changed or removed during repairs, you might experience issues with screen sensitivity and ghost touch.

  • Manufacturing defects

Ghost touch can occasionally result from a manufacturing error. Back office and supply chain implications, industrial automation, data analytics, and other areas of the manufacturing/logistics departments might be responsible for such faults. Programming errors can even sabotage the entire software processing. Therefore, the program installation gone wrong might be to blame.

  • Hardware problems

Ghost touch might also be caused by a hardware issue. To check for hardware issues on your iPhone, launch Settings → select Privacy & Security (iOS 16) or Privacy (iOS 15 or earlier) → Analytics & Improvements → Analytics Data . There could be a list of error logs there.

Steps to check for error logs on an iPhone

  • Software issues

A glitch in the software, such as the iOS 16 upgrade, is a frequent cause of ghost touch. If there is a flaw in the update, it can influence how sensitive the screen is, and you might get an extremely annoying ghost touch.

In November 2018, Apple acknowledged that some iPhone X models had touchscreen problems. Even though that’s an old issue, some users of iOS 16 on iPhone X have brought it up in 2022 as well. Apple hasn’t publicly acknowledged the iPhone ghost touch issue, but investigations and internet complaints have proven that other models have also been impacted. Below is a list of the models rumored to have this screen glitch:

  • iPhone 5
  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 7
  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 12
  • iPhone 13

Note: Ghost Touch can occasionally be experienced on any iPhone.

Here are 10 simple solutions that help you stop ghost touch on your iPhone. Let’s get started!

1. Check Accessibility settings on your iPhone

Accessibility settings may have an impact on the touch of your iPhone. You may have unintentionally activated Touch Accommodation, Assistive Touch, Back Tap , or even a function that recognizes taps on your phone’s back. To adjust these settings:

  • Open Settings → Accessibility → Touch.
  • Now, toggle off/on these four options as per your liking: Assistive Touch, Touch Accommodations, Back Tap, or Haptic Touch.

Steps highlighted for opening Accessibility touch settings on an iPhone with iOS 16

2. Restart your iPhone

You may always try restarting your smartphone if you have problems with the iPhone screen glitch. As rebooting always updates your devices, it also fixes any ghost screen issues that may have been caused by applications. Follow the steps mentioned in our detailed guide to restart your iPhone .

3. Stop using third-party accessories

Some third-party charging cables, headphone jack adapters, battery charging cases, and other accessories might cause odd screen motions. If you only experience ghost touch while a physical peripheral is attached, it is most likely the accessory that is to blame. So, it is recommended to use accessories certified by Apple and check if the problem resolves.

4. Clean your screen

You may think it’s only a silly step, but you have no idea how effective this one could be. To start cleaning the screen on your iPhone, make sure all external peripherals are unplugged. Now, wipe the screen with a soft cloth. Lint-free cloths and screen cleaning sprays are preferred.

5. Update to the latest iOS

Your iPhone may face compatibility issues if you’re using an older version of iOS. Your existing iOS may have some bugs that may lead to phantom touch issues on your iPhone. To rectify the iPhone glitch screen, you may update iOS to the latest version using the steps mentioned in our detailed guide.

6. Update apps in App Store

iPhone’s ghost touch issue might be caused by out-of-date applications. It would be best if you upgraded the out-of-date apps on the Apple Store to correct them. You may have a few applications waiting for updates if automatic updates are not enabled. Read the following article for detailed information about how to update an app on iPhone .

7. Remove or replace your iPhone’s screen protector

Screen protectors are very thin sheets of glass or plastic that are used to shield the iPhone’s screen from damage. While they are often advantageous, they occasionally may interfere with your touchscreen’s functionality. Be careful not to scratch your iPhone’s screen when removing the screen protector from your phone.

8. Reset iPhone Setting s

If you feel like the ghost touch issue is because of the settings you’ve customized recently, then you can always revert back to your iPhone’s default settings. To reset your settings back to default, you need to follow the following steps:

  • Launch Settings → General .
  • Go to Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset All Settings .

Steps showing how to factory reset an iPhone

9. Do a factory reset

This is the last resort if your iPhone continues to have ghost touch errors. You can attempt factory resetting your iPhone to fix the glitch screen issue. I advise backing up your iPhone before continuing because this step will erase the device’s data. Please go through our guide on how to factory reset your iPhone and iPad for detailed steps.

10. Contact Apple Support

Well, if none of the aforementioned measures work for you, there’s always Apple Support. You might be able to get your screen changed for free, depending on your iPhone model and warranty. To obtain assistance, you can get in touch with Apple Support directly or go to a nearby Apple Store or authorized Apple Service Provider.

Note: If you own an iPhone X or an iPhone 11 that’s manufactured between November 2019 and May 2020, then Apple will replace your iPhone’s screen for free.

Winding up…

Please let us know in the comment section if you experience any other issues with your device. I’ll make it a point to respond as soon as possible. Don’t forget to read the other articles as well. Below is a list of a few topics that might interest you.

13 Quick Tips to Fix iPhone Ghost Touch Issue in iOS 16

“ My iPhone X keeps acting like I’m pressing buttons when I’m not. It’s been going on for a couple of weeks and I thought resetting my iPhone would help but it hasn’t. What should I do? ”

In some instances, the iPhone screen acts as if it’s been touched, opens apps or makes calls by itself – this strange phenomenon is often referred to as “Ghost Touch”. Till now, a growing number of people have complained about the iPhone X ghost touch issues on Apple’s discussion forums.

Which iPhones Are Affected by the Ghost Touch Issue?

This ghost touch issue commonly affects iPhone X devices. Apple even admitted in 2018 that there were problems with the iPhone X’s touchscreen and provided free repairs to affected customers.

Actually, the ghost touch problem not only affects the iPhone X, but also other iPhone models like iPhone 14/13/12/11, iPhone XS/XS Max/XR, iPhone 8/7/6s/6, etc. If this occurs to you, don’t worry, keep reading this guide to learn some possible causes of iPhone ghost touch and a few tips to fix this issue in iOS 16/15.

Part 1. What Causes Ghost Touch on iPhone?

Part 2. best way to fix iphone ghost touch without data loss, 3.1 clean your iphone touchscreen, 3.2 take off iphone screen protector, 3.3 remove your iphone’s case, 3.4 disconnect third-party charger and accessories, 3.5 restart your iphone, 3.6 check your accessibility settings.

  • 4.1 Force Restart Your iPhone

4.2 Reset All Settings on Your iPhone

4.3 factory reset your iphone, 4.4 update to the latest ios 16.

  • 4.5 Reinstall iOS Using Recovery Mode

4.6 Get iPhone X Screen Fixed by Apple

Several things can cause this problem, and understanding the main cause can help you determine the best solution to implement. The following are some of the main causes of the iPhone ghost touch issue.

1. Wet or Dirty Touchscreen

Your iPhone’s screen detects even the slightest of touches due to changes in the electrical field on and around the screen. This electrical field can be triggered when significant dirt on the screen, resulting in a ghost touch that the apps may detect on the device.

This is why the ghost touch issue is often visible if you use your iPhone with wet hands or when there is significant dried residue on the screen.

2. An ill-fitting iPhone Case

Sometimes the problem could also be the iPhone case that you are using. If the case is too tight, it can touch some sections of the screen resulting in the ghost touch.

This problem can also be present if the phone case is made of hard materials that squeeze on the iPhone, causing it to bend. The warping effect created by this bend can cause issues with the touch panel resulting in ghost touches.

An ill-fitting case can also cause temperature issues with the device, particularly causing the temperature to rise. This heated-up environment can, in turn, interfere with the iPhone’s touchscreen causing the ghost touch problem.

3. Screen Protectors

The screen protector you are using can also cause this issue if debris is stuck between the screen and the protector. Maybe some dust got trapped between the screen and the protector when you were applying the protector. The same ghost issue may also happen if the screen protector is not properly placed on the device.

4. Software Issues

It is also possible that problems with the iPhone’s software could be the main cause. If minor issues cause the ghost touch, simply restarting the device can fix the system errors and therefore fix the ghost touch issue. If the underlying system errors are more severe, you may need to update or restore the device to fix them.

5. iPhone Hardware Issues

But perhaps the most prevalent cause of the ghost touch issue is if there is physical damage to the screen itself. This can happen if you dropdrop the device or the iPhone has suffered liquid damage. In this case, the best solution is to make an appointment at your local Apple Store and have the technicians look at the device.

If your iPhone is suffering from ghost touch screen and you think that this phenomenon is a result of software errors, you can depend on third-party iOS repair tool to fix the issue. Here Fucosoft iOS System Recovery (iOS 16 supported) is strongly recommend.

It is a powerful program with easy-to-use interface, which helps you fix many common iOS system issues including ghost touch on your iPhone X, iPhone XS/XR, iPhone 11/11 Pro, iPhone SE, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone 14, etc. Also, it is capable of solving iPhone Touch ID not working , iPhone stuck in Recovery mode , DFU mode, Apple logo, iPhone is disable connect to iTunes , restart loops, freezing issue, and so on without data loss.

Part 3. Several Quick Fixes for iPhone Ghost Touch

Sometimes the screen has debris or dust on it that causes the iPhone X ghost touch problem. So a simple fix you should try is to clean your iPhone’s touchscreen.

Please turn your iPhone off and unplug any connected cables before start cleaning it. Then use a soft and clean cloth with alcohol to gently wipe your device’s screen from one end to the other.

Also you can take a small piece of tissue paper (fold it several times) and a wooden toothpick. Use the folded tissue paper and toothpick to clean the small gap between the iPhone’s glass screen and body.

Many iPhone users choose to attach a screen protector to protect the screen from scratches. Sometimes, the screen protector may disrupt how the touchscreen operates and cause issues like iPhone ghost touch.

In this case, you can easily fix the issue by removing your iPhone’s screen protector. Please do it carefully and slowly. If the protector is damaged, you’d better take your phone to a repair shop or Apple to remove it without harming the device.

Just like screen protectors, your iPhone’s case might also case ghost touch screen and make your device perform actions automatically.

And you can easily solve this problem by removing the attached case from your iPhone. After that, your your iPhone should work normally.

If you are using iPhone charging accessories that are not Apple certified, including any charging cables, headphone jack converters, or any other battery charging cases, disconnecting them from the device may fix this issue. These charging accessories have been known to cause the screen to move when connected, resulting in the ghost touch issue.

If you find that the problem is the charging cable you are using, you may also want to connect the charger to a different outlet or use your computer if you use a wall outlet.

If you are still facing the ghost touch screen on your iPhone after trying the above fixes, you can try to restart your iPhone. Restarting your iPhone can help to fix most minor glitches that cause your device malfunction such as ghost touch. The steps to restart iPhone varies depending on the models you have:

  • For iPhone X or later : Hold the Side button and either Volume button until “slide to power off” appears. Swipe the slider to the right to power off the device. After that, hold the Side button to restart the iPhone.
  • For iPhone 8 or earlier : Hold the Top/Side button until “slide to power off” appears. Swipe the slide to turn off the device. After that, hold the Top/Side button again until you see the Apple logo.

restart iphone

The Accessibility settings on your iPhone can significantly affect the way your device responds to touch. You may experience this problem if you change any of these settings, including the AssistiveTouch, Touch Accommodations, and many other settings. Do the following to check;

  • Open the Settings app on the iPhone and go to Accessibility > Touch.
  • Check if AssistiveTouch is enabled. If it is, tap on the toggle next to it to disable it.
  • You may also have issues with the touchscreen if “Touch Accommodations” is enabled. If it is, toggle the switch next to it to turn it off.
  • You should also ensure that “Back Tap” is not enabled to prevent double or triple taps when using the volume keys or activate Siri. Tap on the “Back Tap” setting and choose “None” for both options.
  • Finally, tap on “Haptic Touch” to see if the period you have to wait before your touchscreen registers a touch is too slow or fast.

Part 4. Other Possible Solutions to Fix iPhone Ghost Touch

4.1 force restart your iphone.

It is possible that restarting your iPhone could not remove the glitch that cause the ghost touch issue. In this situation, force restarting your iPhone is also a worth trying solution. This will clear all temporary memory of your iPhone and gives the device a fresh start, then fix the ghost touch screen. Follow these simple steps:

  • For iPhone 8 or later devices : Press and quickly release the Volume Up button > Press and quickly release the Volume Down button > Hold down the Side button until you see the Apple logo.
  • For iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus : Hold down the Volume Down button and the Power button > Release both buttons until you see the Apple logo.
  • For iPhone 6 or earlier devices : Hold down the Power button and the Home button > Release the both buttons until you see the Apple logo.

put iphone in recovery mode

Another step in troubleshooting the ghost touch phenomenon is to reset all settings on your iPhone X. To do this: go to Settings > General > Reset and select “Reset All Settings”.

You will be required to enter your screen passcode to confirm the action. Then all the settings on your iPhone will be revert to the default settings.

reset all settings iphone

Only the system settings will be reset. You won’t lose any files, data or apps.

For most people, simply force restarting the iPhone or resetting all settings will do the trick. But if you are one of the unlucky dogs still experiencing iPhone X ghost touch issues after trying the above solutions, you can perform a factory reset on your iPhone.

But it’s worth mentioning that a factory reset will totally erase all the contents from your iPhone. So we suggest you first back up your iPhone before following the steps below:

  • On your iPhone, go to Settings and tap on “General”.
  • Scroll down to the bottom and tap “Reset”, then choose “Erase All Content and Settings”.
  • Tap “Backup Then Erase” or “Erase Now” to restore your iPhone to its original factory state.

erase all content settings iphone

Factory resetting iPhone will help to solve most software problems, but if that doesn’t stop the iPhone X ghost touch problem, you can try updating your iPhone to the latest iOS 16. This is a good way of resolving any software bugs that might cause ghost touch. Here’s how to do it wirelessly:

  • Plug your iPhone into a power and connect it to a Wi-Fi network.
  • Open Settings > choose “General” > click on “Software Update”.
  • Tap “Download and Install”. If you have already downloaded the update, tap “Install Now”.

update ios wirelessly

If you can’t find the update on your iPhone, you can update to iOS 16 manually using iTunes or Finder on your computer.

4.5 Reinstall iOS Using Recovery Mode

Reinstalling the iOS in recovery mode is one of the best ways to fix this problem if a software problem causes this ghost touch issue. To use this solution, enter recovery mode on your iPhone and connect it to the computer and when iTunes/Finder gives you the option, choose “Update” and follow the instructions to complete the process.

If recovery mode cannot fix the device, try entering DFU mode, which is the deepest form of restore that you can try and will fix even the most problematic iOS issues. Both recovery and DFU modes will cause data loss, so be sure to back up your device before attempting either.

If the above solutions don’t help, don’t worry, Apple is ready to fix your problem for free. Recently, Apple recognized the iPhone X’s screen issue on its support page and now offers a free display repair service for those who experience the problem.

You can either make an appointment at an Apple Retail Store or find an Apple Authorized Service Provider to get your iPhone X ghost touch issue fixed. Before that, make sure to backup your iPhone to iTunes or iCloud, or using third-party tool like Fucosoft iOS Data Backup & Restore .

  • If you determine the problem is related to a charging cable, you may also want to try plugging the charger into a different outlet or device, such as using your computer instead of a wall outlet. This can help you rule out grounding problems with problematic wall outlets, extension cords, and power strips.

Clean your screen.

How to Fix Ghost Touch on an iPhone: 9 Potential Fixes to Try

Does your iPhone perform actions on its own? You might have the “ghost touch” issue. Here are several possible fixes for it.

Ghost touch is when your iPhone screen moves or starts tapping buttons on its own. The screen seems to react to nonexistent touches, which means apps open and start doing stuff without you actually touching anything. Unsurprisingly, such strange actions can be more than a little annoying.

However, while ghost touch sometimes requires you to take your iPhone to Apple for a repair, you can try a number of quick fixes for free. These range from cleaning the iPhone’s touchscreen to performing a factory reset.

Which iPhones Are Affected by Ghost Touch?

Ghost touch problems most commonly affect the iPhone X. In November 2018, Apple admitted that it had found some issues affecting the iPhone X’s touchscreen. It also announced that it would provide free repairs to affected customers.

However, reports and complaints online have shown that the iPhone ghost touch issue also happens on other models. Affected iPhones include not only the iPhone XS and XR, but also older models like the iPhone 8, 7, 6, and 5 as well as newer models like the iPhone 11, 12, or 13. In other words, ghost touch is something that can, on rare occasion, affect any iPhone.

Whatever model you’ve got, here’s how to fix ghost touch on your iPhone.

1. Clean the Touchscreen

It may sound simple, but cleaning your iPhone’s touchscreen can be an effective defense against ghost touch. By doing this, you will clear away any debris or dust that was causing your iPhone to think you’re touching the screen.

To clean your iPhone’s touchscreen, you should first turn it off and unplug any cables. Next, you should find a soft and clean cloth, such as a lint-free cloth for cleaning glasses. You should lightly dampen this cloth with water. Finally, start cleaning the touchscreen by wiping gently but firmly from one end to the other.

While wiping, make sure you don’t get moisture into any openings.

Also, Apple recommends that you don’t use window or household cleaners, or cleaners containing abrasives or hydrogen peroxide. You could erode the oil-resistant coating Apple put on your iPhone screen if you do so.

2. Take Off Your Screen Protector

Screen protectors are thin layers of glass or plastic that you can attach to the iPhone’s touchscreen to protect it from scratching or cracking. While they’re often useful, they can disrupt how the touchscreen operates. You should therefore try removing any screen protector, since doing so could easily fix ghost touch problems.

You should remove your iPhone’s screen protector very carefully and slowly. Start at one corner, and then gradually peel the protector off the iPhone’s screen. If the protector has been cracked or damaged at all, it might be safer to take your phone to a suitably qualified repair shop (or to Apple) to ensure you don’t cut yourself on the cracked glass.

You should also consider contacting the manufacturer of the screen protector. This manufacturer might be better placed to recommend the best method for removing the protector and may be able to refund you if the screen protector caused your iPhone’s ghost touch problems.

Don’t forget to clean the screen again after removing any screen protectors.

3. Remove Your iPhone’s Case

Another possible cause of ghost touch on an iPhone is a slightly twisted screen. If your iPhone has such a screen, you might be able to solve the problem by removing any hard case you’re using. Occasionally, it can be this hard case that twists the screen, so removing it can fix the issue.

In online forums, some iPhone users have noted that their hard case got twisted after dropping their iPhone. As such, it really is worth trying to remove the hard case if your iPhone has one.

4. Restart Your iPhone

It’s always a good idea to restart your iPhone whenever it has a problem. This also applies to ghost touch issues, since it’s possible that clearing your iPhone’s temporary memory by restarting it could fix any glitch that is causing the the screen to play up.

To restart an iPhone that doesn’t have a Home button, do the following:

  • Hold the Side button and either Volume button until the slide to power off slider appears.
  • Swipe the power off slider to the right.
  • After shutdown, hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.

To restart an iPhone with a Home button, take these steps:

  • Hold the Top (or Side) button , until the slide to power off slider appears.
  • After shutdown, hold the Top (or Side) button until the Apple logo appears.

5. Force Restart Your iPhone

Similar to restarting your iPhone but noticeably more drastic, you could force restart your iPhone. You can do this if your iPhone’s ghost touch problem is so severe that you can’t even turn it off properly. That’s because a force restart works even when your iPhone doesn’t.

To force restart on an iPhone 8 or later, do the following:

  • Press and quickly release the Volume Up button .
  • Press and quickly release the Volume Down button .
  • Hold the Side button .
  • Release the Side button when the Apple logo appears.

To force restart an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus, the steps are:

  • Hold the Volume Down button and the Sleep/Wake button .
  • Release both buttons when the Apple logo appears.

To force restart an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus or earlier, you should do this:

  • Hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button .

6. Update iOS

If ghost touch is still a problem, you should update your iPhone . This is worth doing because ghost touch might have been caused by a software bug that Apple has fixed in a recent update.

You need to do the following to update your iPhone:

  • Open Settings .
  • Select General .
  • Press Software Update .
  • Tap Download and Install or Install (if you’ve already downloaded the update).

7. Perform a Factory Reset

If restarts and software updates don’t stop your iPhone’s ghost touch problem, you should perform a factory reset on your iPhone . This is a good way of removing any underlying software issues that might cause ghost touch.

You should back up your iPhone before performing a factory reset because this will wipe all your data.

To reset your iPhone, you should do the following:

  • Scroll down and tap Transfer or Reset .
  • Press Erase All Content and Settings .
  • Tap Continue and enter your iPhone passcode.

After you’ve performed the factory reset, you’ll have to go through the setup process again. This is where you can choose to restore your iPhone from a previously saved backup.

8. Reinstall iOS Using Recovery Mode

If a simple force restart doesn’t work for you, you can try putting your iPhone in Recovery Mode and reinstalling iOS. To put an iPhone in Recovery Mode , connect it to a computer running macOS or iTunes and follow the steps above to force restart the iPhone.

Once in Recovery Mode, your computer will show a message that says, “There is a problem with the iPhone that requires it to be updated or restored.” You should click Update (if available) or Restore .

Restoring your iPhone from Recovery Mode will wipe all your data. You should therefore back up your iPhone beforehand, if possible.

If Recovery Mode doesn’t fix your iPhone, try using DFU mode instead. This is an even deeper version of Recovery Mode that reinstalls all the firmware on your iPhone as well as the software.

9. Take Your iPhone to Apple

If your iPhone is still suffering from ghost touch, you should book an appointment at your nearest Apple Store for a repair. That’s because you’ve exhausted the software fixes now, so it must be a hardware issue that is causing ghost touch on your iPhone. For example, some owners have mentioned that improper display assembly or touchscreen seating can cause the issue.

You shouldn’t take your iPhone apart and try to fix such causes yourself unless you have considerable experience doing so. It’s much safer to turn to Apple Support , which is where you can book an appointment. Attempting a DIY repair will also void any warranty you have on your iPhone.

Bad iPhone Repairs Can Cause Ghost Touch

If your iPhone needs a hardware repair to fix ghost touch, make sure you only use Apple or an Apple-authorized service provider. This is because low-quality parts or dodgy repairs can cause various problems with your iPhone screen. They could even cause ghost touch in the first place.

Top 10 Ways to Fix iPhone Ghost Touch on iOS 15/14

Do your iPhone touch screen starts running on its own? You may sometimes see apps getting launched independently, placing random calls, and accessing a few features without you doing anything.

If your iPhone gives you a touchscreen issue, your device could suffer from the ghost touch problem.

If your iPhone also suffers from the same, this guide will help you learn some easy tips to fix it.

10 Effective Ways to Fix iPhone Ghost Touch Issue

Whether you have encountered the ghost touch problem once or twice, addressing it is essential. Ghost touch issue is more common with iPhone X models.

Apple admitted that some iPhone X models had been affected by this issue. Apart from iPhone X, other models affected by ghost touch are iPhone 5, 6, 7, 6, XS, and XR.

But the good news is that the ghost touch issue can be fixed. The solutions that we have listed below are tried and tested.

Method 1: Clean the Touchscreen

clean touch screen

The dirty screens of an iPhone can often activate the ghost touch. If you keep your device clean, it can prevent the ghost touch issue. Therefore, make it a point to clean the screen of your iPhone regularly.

Switch off your device and remove cables if they are connected. Now, grab a soft piece of cloth; the best one to use is the cloth that comes with your contact lens. Dampen the fabric a bit, then begin the cleaning process. Be gentle while doing that.

Don’t use household or window cleaners to clean the iPhone screen. If a cleaning agent contains hydrogen peroxide or abrasives, you must keep them away from the iPhone. Hence, dampen the cloth with a few drops of water only.

Method 2: Remove the Screen Protector from iPhone

remove screen protector

Many iPhone users use screen protectors to protect the screen. Although screen protectors are helpful and keep the main screen free from scratches, they can be the reason of iPhone ghost touch issue.

Hence, try removing them and see if this issue has been resolved or not.

You can remove the screen protector on your own by pulling one corner and eventually removing the rest of the protector. However, if you are not confident of removing the protector on your own, it will be better to take the iPhone to a shop and allow the professionals to take care of it.

Method 3: Take Out the iPhone Case

take off iphone case

Although iPhone case manufacturers ensure to design cases that will be compatible with the iPhone model, some of them can give you trouble.

The corners of these cases are the main reason why you may see the ghost touch issue. The corners often twist the screen and make it do things that you didn’t ask to. In addition, the covers of these cases can promote auto-touch.

Branded iPhone cases don’t cause the ghost touch issue, but you never know what may be the reason behind ghost touch. Hence, take out the case carefully.

After removing it, check whether it still struggles from ghost touch or not. If the ghost touch issue is not occurring again, get rid of the case and buy a fully compatible case.

Method 4: Restart your iPhone

restart iphone

The restart method may seem like the simplest solution, but this simple trick can eliminate many software glitches, including ghost touch.

Different iPhone models will have to be restarted differently. Follow one of the methods that suit you:

For iPhone 12, 11, or X

Press the Volume Down or Up and Side key together and hold for a few seconds. The power off slider will appear. Drag it, and your iPhone will be turned off. Wait for a few seconds and hold and press the side key to restart your iPhone.

For iPhone 6, 7, 8, and SE Second Generation

Press the side key and hold it. The power off slider will appear. Now, drag it, and your device will be turned off. Wait for a few seconds, press the side key again, and hold it for a few seconds to restart your device.

For iPhone 5, SE First Generation, and Earlier Models

Hold and press the top button. You will see the power off slider. Drag it and let your iPhone get switched off. Please wait for a few seconds, press the top key again, and hold it for a few seconds to restart your device.

Method 5: Force Restart Your Device

If you fail to restart your iPhone normally because of ghost touch, you should force restart your device. Severe glitches can make your iPhone fail to restart normally.

For iPhone 8 and Later Models

Press three keys back-to-back. First, press the Volume up key and release it. Second, press the Volume Down key and release. Finally, press the side key. You will see the Apple logo appearing.

For iPhone 7 Plus and 7 Models

Your iPhone has Power and Volume keys; please press them both and hold them together for a few seconds. Once you see the Apple logo, release the keys. Your iPhone will reboot itself.

For iPhone 6 and Earlier Models

Open your iPhone, hold the Power and Home keys together, and keep pressing them together for a few seconds. After you see the Apple logo appearing, release the keys, and your iPhone will restart itself.

Method 6: Go on and update the iOS

Updating the iOS of your model can fix a lot of its glitches. A lot of older iOS devices have a ghost touch issue. So, if your iPhone is running on an older iOS version, you should update it as soon as possible.

Once you do that, check if you are still facing the ghost touch issue. Here’s what you need to do:

Step 1:  Launch your iPhone and go to the Settings option.

Step 2:  Once you are there, you need to select the General option.

Step 3:  Select the Software Update option.

Method 7: Factory Reset your iPhone

This method has better chances of resolving the ghost touch issue. Here are the steps that you need to take care of:

Step 1:  Launch your iPhone and click on the Settings option.

Step 2:  Click on the General option and hit the Reset option.

Step 3:  On the Reset page, you will see two options. You need to click on the Erase All Content and Settings option.

After the steps are performed, your iPhone will be reset to the factory setting. And now, you shouldn’t encounter a ghost touch issue.

Method 8: Use iTunes to Restore Your iPhone

Another method that you can try is restoring your iPhone. To do this process, you will have to use iTunes. Once you fix your device, it will resolve a lot of problems, including the iPhone ghost touch issue.

Here are the steps that you need to follow:

Step 1:  Take your iPhone and use a USB cable to connect it to the computer. Once done, launch iTunes.

Step 2:  iTunes will identify your iPhone. Click on your device once it detects it.

Step 3:  On the left, you will see the summary option. Please click on that and then hit the Restore iPhone option.

Apple has released iOS 17.0.3, an emergency iPhone update fixing two security flaws—one of which is already being used in real-life attacks.

Apple doesn’t give much away about the issues fixed in iOS 17.0.3 to give people as much time as possible to update their iPhones before more attackers can get hold of the details.

The first flaw patched in iOS 17.0.3 is an issue in the kernel at the heart of the iOS operating system tracked as CVE-2023-42824. Apple said the issue fixed in iOS 17.0.3 could allow an adversary to elevate their privileges—if they can access your iPhone locally.

While this makes it more difficult for remote attackers to exploit, the flaw is already being used in attacks. Apple is “aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited against versions of iOS before iOS 16.6,” the iPhone maker said on its support page .

The second issue fixed in iOS 17.0.3 is a vulnerability in open source web technology WebRTC tracked as CVE-2023-5217 that could allow an attacker to execute code. This issue affects multiple browsers and platforms and has already been patched in Google’s Chrome browser and Mozilla’s Firefox.

Google’s researchers said last week that the heap buffer overflow in vp8 encoding in libvpx was being exploited by unnamed spyware vendors.

Update Now To iOS 17.0.3

Best high-yield savings accounts of september 2023, best 5% interest savings accounts of september 2023.

It’s the third iOS update in as many weeks—with the iPhone maker already fixing flaws used in spyware attacks .

The emergency timing of iOS 17.0.3 shows it’s an important one. “The urgency of the release from Apple highlights how important it is to install iOS 17.0.3,” says independent security researcher Sean Wright.

He also warns that the WebRTC vulnerability could be chained with the local kernel exploit “to gain remote control over a victim’s device.”

Given that at least one of the issues fixed in iOS 17.0.3 is already being used in real-life attacks, it’s a good idea to update your iPhone now.

However, check your privacy settings once you’ve updated to iOS 17.0.3, as security researcher Tommy Mysk has discovered an iOS 17 issue that can turn on Significant Locations and iPhone Analytics when you had previously turned these off.

If you haven’t already updated to iOS 17 , you might be wondering if there is an iOS 16 fix for the same vulnerability. At the time of writing, Apple has only issued iOS 17.0.3, which could mean updating to the latest iPhone software iOS 16.7 is enough to protect you.

But the fix is not listed in the iOS 16.7 security details, so it’s also possible Apple is about to issue an iOS 16 patch. Keep an eye on my Forbes page for updates.

The iOS 17.0.3 upgrade also fixes an overheating issue in iPhone 15s, so users of Apple’s newest device should be updating urgently.

If you are already on iOS 17, updating to iOS 17.0.3 is a no-brainer. This is an important update you should apply right now, so go to your Settings > General > Software Update and download and install iOS 17.0.3 as soon as possible.
