Metal Gear Solid 5 Guide: How to Farm Fuel Resources
Follow this helpful Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain guide for an easy way to farm Fuel Resources in bulk and access all of the best weapon developments in the game.
When first booting up Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain , and after getting past the very strange prologue , players will uncover an open world unlike anything the series has seen before. In fact, the amount of possibilities Kojima Productions has put at gamers’ fingertips can be quite overwhelming at first, from completing Side Ops to extracting prisoners to managing Mother Base.
Eventually, though, players will get a hang of the systems in Metal Gear Solid 5, and it’s likely they will become engrossed by them. Developing new weapons, expanding Mother Base , and unlocking new gadgets soon become an obsession if players are not too careful, but fueling that obsession isn’t necessarily easy.
Although players will want to expand their Mother Base as quickly as possible, Metal Gear Solid 5 puts some harsh limitations on resources. Specifically, the game keeps Fuel Resources to a scarce minimum, meaning players will need to either scavenge a lot of them or wait until their Base Development facility collects enough to expand Mother Base.
Luckily, there’s a late-game trick for acquiring Fuel Resources in bulk that should push player’s Mother Base facilities over the edge. However, getting to the farming spot requires a little prep.
First, players will need to acquire the Wormhole Fulton upgrade, which uses teleportation instead of a balloon to extract soldiers, weapons, and resources. Doing so requires completing Side Op #50, ‘Capture the Legendary Jackal’, and having an R&D and Support level of 40 at Mother Base. After that, players can start development on the Wormhole Fulton for 850,000 GMP.
Once players have the Wormhole Fulton, they will need to load up Episode 12 “Hellbound” from the mission select screen. This is the mission where Big Boss extracts Huey Emmerich from the Metal Gear development facility. Run to the area where the Metal Gear, Sahelanthropus, is being held and there should be some Fuel Resources crates located inside the facility. Without the Wormhole Fulton, players would be unable to extract the crates, but thanks to the magic of teleportation they can. So extract the resources, finish the mission, and then replay it as many times as you want.
Obviously, this farming trick isn’t going to be for everybody, as it doesn’t come into play until much later in Metal Gear Solid 5 , but for those players who are going for 100% completion or the Platinum Trophy/1,000 GamerScore. There’s a lot to explore in Metal Gear Solid 5 beyond the main story, and many of the best secrets in the game require a lot of resources. So use this trick and rack in as many Fuel Resources as you want, and develop all of the coolest gadgets for Big Boss and his buddies.

Materials ( Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain )
- View history
In Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain , the player can collect various materials for developing Mother Base , as well as various weapons, equipment, and vehicles. Unprocessed materials are far more common but require the player to wait for Mother Base's Base Development Team to process them before they can be used. Finding already-processed materials on the field will result in Diamond Dogs being able to use the materials straight away but are far lower in quantity. [1] Each time a material is processed with its maximum quantity, 250,000 GMP worth of materials will be processed.

Fuel Resources [ ]

Fuel resources are the most common requirements to develop bases, being required to develop Command Platform, Combat Platform, R&D Platform, Base Development Unit Platform, and Medical Platform. As such, they serve as the biggest obstacle to players when developing bases. They can be found easily in several areas, including OKB Zero, Nova Braga Airport, and the cave at the beginning of Mission 12. They can be sold for 100 GMP each.
Biological Material [ ]

Can be processed a maximum of 2,500 each time offline. Are required to develop Base Development, Support and Medical Platform. They can be sold for 100 GMP each.

Common Metals [ ]

Are required for developing the Combat, R&D, and Intel Platforms. They can be sold for 100 GMP each.
Minor Metals [ ]

Can be processed a maximum of 1,250 at a time. Are worth 200 GMP a piece. They serve as a requirement to develop the Command Platform.
Precious Metals [ ]

Precious metals can be processed a maximum of 250 at a time offline. They are highly valuable and can be sold for 1,000 GMP each. Three red containers (1500 total) can be found in Nova Braga Airport but are indoors and require the Wormhole Fulton to extract. They are the only materials that aren't required for developing either Mother Base itself or the various Forward Operating Bases, though they are required for some weapons and equipment development. Many Grade 7 or higher weapons require 200,000 precious metals or more, quickly depleting a player's precious metal reservoir. If looking to develop such weapons, infiltrating a Base Development Unit with 10,000+ worth of unprocessed precious metals is desirable to replace the lost processed ones. Albeit, it will take a significant amount of time to process them.
Blueprints/First Aid Manual [ ]
Although technically not materials, they were stored in briefcases similar to the processed materials. In addition, they also had the markings "TP" on them similar to the research containers in "Cursed Legacy", suggesting a connection between the two similar to the processed materials containers and the materials containers.

It may not be much, but we can use them straight away if you bring them back to [Mother] Base. This conversation only occurs when the player approaches the fuel resources kit.

Resource Containers
Aside from making money from doing missions in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, the only other reason to collect all those Processed Materials is so that Snake can upgrade Mother Base to a full 28-platform beast. But in order to build Mother Base, Snake needs materials. Why not let IGN's Wiki guide point out there locations?
This IGN Wiki will map out EVERY single outpost and guard post in both Afghanistan and Central Africa, so if you really want that new platform at Mother Base (or your FOB), then look no further than here!

In particular, the two most needed materials are Fuel Resources and Common Metal. Others like Biological Resources, Precious Metals, and Minor Metals are used more for specialty weapons such as the Stealth Camo or Grenades. Every outpost and guard post in Afghanistan and Africa contains large cases of each of these processed materials but there are even BIGGER ones in store for those willing to look for them!

Yes, there are vast amounts of containers spread out through most of the outposts (and some guard posts) that contain copious amounts of unprocessed materials that Snake can steal and bring back to Mother Base for his Base Development team to process.
There are 3 types of containers to find and bring back to Mother Base
- White containers contain a basic amount of resources. (750 Fuel or Biological Materials or Common Metal, 400 Minor Metal, 50 Precious Metal)
- Off-White containers with rounded corners have twice that of the standard white ones. (1500, 800, 100) (Might only be found on FOBs, need clarification)
- Red Containers have the most (thus shouldn't be passed by), 10 times that of the standard white ones. (7500, 4000, 500)
These containers can only be Fultoned with a level 2 or higher Fulton device, while some specialty containers can only be taken via a Wormhole Fulton.
