Why the millennium biltmore is one of hollywood’s most important (and most haunted) cultural landmarks.

There’s something about Los Angeles’ Millennium Biltmore Hotel that reminds us of the fictional Overlook Hotel, the setting for Stanley Kubrick ‘s 1980 masterpiece, “The Shining” (which actually exists in reality as The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado). Both are luxe and lavish with Hollywood pedigrees…and both, it’s safe to say, are supremely haunted.

Millennium Biltmore

But before we get to the latter, let’s set the scene for our own Hollywood story, and share why this iconic hotel is actually one of the most important cultural landmarks in Hollywood (despite being located in downtown L.A.) Some 3,000 guests—including some of the biggest names in Hollywood, such as studio head Jack Warner, Cecil B. DeMille, Mary Pickford and then-starlet Myrna Loy —descended upon what was first known as the Los Angeles Biltmore on Oct. 2, 1923, one night after it officially opened, for a seven-course dinner, with music provided by seven orchestras that spanned its glittering ballrooms.  And this is where it all began.

Millennium Biltmore

Names that defined old Hollywood, from Gloria Swanson to Theda Bara, hung out here, imbibing and partying in the Gold Room, which served as a speakeasy during the Prohibition era, complete with a hidden door that helped revelers avoid the police with an escape onto Olive Street. (The door is still there, by the way—it connects to a room that has a wooden countertop, coat hooks and bathroom, though its Olive Street exit has been sealed in brick.) The Presidential Suite—favored by the likes of six U. S. presidents, royalty, and notorious gangsters like Bugsy Siegel and Al Capone— still has a recessed spot to hide liquor, which remained illegal in most of L.A. until 1933.

Millennium Biltmore

The Biltmore’s allure was strong for the studios and starlets of vintage Hollywood. Within its first year, it was already a shooting location for DeMille’s 1924 film, “Triumph.” It was also featured in films and shows that nod to the past, including “Ocean’s 11” (1960), “The Sting” (1973), “Chinatown” (1974), and “Bugsy” (1991) as well as “Mad Men.” The hotel also hosted the opening party for the iconic Grauman’s Chinese Theatre (now known as the TCL Chinese Theatre ); is where the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences ( AMPAS ) was born (in 1927 at a gathering in the hotel’s Crystal Ballroom); and is allegedly where MGM’s great production designer Cedric Gibbons  is said to have sketched the first Oscar statue (on one of the hotel’s linen napkins).

Millennium Biltmore

Fittingly, it’s also where the Academy Awards was actually hosted—in 1928, 1935-39 and 1941-42. If only these walls could talk—the stars the hotel has seen walk through its hallowed halls is staggering: Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, Jimmy Stewart and Gary Cooper all won their Oscars here, as did Bette Davis, Joan Fontaine, Ginger Rogers and Claudette Colbert . The Biltmore is where “It Happened One Night” (1934) set a record by sweeping the Oscars’ top honors, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor and Best Actress. Colbert was so convinced she wouldn’t win that she went to Union Station to board a train and had to be brought back to the Biltmore to accept her award.

Millennium Biltmore

Now, needless to say, a place with this much pedigree, that’s this tied to Hollywood, would have its share of Hollywood ghosts. And it really, really does. The property is beautiful, no doubt, but also a little wistful, as if the hotel itself wanted to step back into time, into its glorious, golden, star-studded heyday. There’s said to be a little boy running around the 10th floor (which also serves as the Club Lounge); a nurse ghost on the second floor; and a little girl on the ninth (though not, thankfully, twins a la “The Shining”). We even had our own brush with the supernatural on the 5th floor (but that’s better left unsaid for now). Most notably, especially when discussing old Hollywood, the ghost of Elizabeth Short on the 10th and 11th floors, as well as the lobby. Short, as you may remember, is the given name of the woman known as the Black Dahlia—perhaps the most iconic unsolved murder mystery in Hollywood.

Millennium Biltmore

Ghosts aside, the Millennium Biltmore is a place where the past meets the present. As the hotel prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary, guests can still feel that old Hollywood glamour from the moment they enter the glittering, golden lobby. This is opulence at its finest: full of frescos and murals, carved marble fountains and columns, crystal chandeliers, and embroidered tapestries. A Roman-style pool only adds to its allure. That the 683 guestrooms are newly refurbished and have all the modern amenities one expects from a luxury hotel—including high-speed WiFi, iPod docking systems, a 24-hour business center, a fitness center and an elegant Club Lounge overlooking the City of Angels—only sweetens the deal (because while you want to enjoy the timelessness of the Millennium, you want to be able to do so comfortably, right?).

Millennium Biltmore

To sum it all up, if you’re an old Hollywood aficionado, this hotel is a must. It’s a cultural landmark—and anyone who’s involved in the film community (and even those who are not) will take home a piece of its spirit. Just make sure to be aware that there are  actual  spirits on the property. But don’t worry—they don’t want to bring you harm. They just want to be remembered. Luckily, this is a perfect spot to ensure just that.

The Millennium Biltmore is located at 506 S Grand Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90071

Is The Millennium Biltmore Hotel Haunted by The Black Dahlia Ghost?

The Millennium Biltmore Hotel

The Millennium Biltmore Hotel opened its doors for the first time in 1923. The luxurious destination was built to cater for Los Angeles’ high society, yet served many different purposes throughout its life time.

Haunted Millennium Biltmore Hotel at night.

The Millennium Biltmore Hotel hosted the Academy Awards from 1935 until the beginning of World War II, when it was repurposed as a facility to serve soldiers on leave with rest and recreation. The stunning hotel’s interior has also made appearances across the small and silver screen featuring in Entourage, Fight Club and the Slimer scene from Ghostbusters, which seems fitting for a building with such close links to the paranormal world.

Hauntings of The Millennium Biltmore Hotel

The glamorous and grandeur Millennium Biltmore Hotel is an impressive building with an even more impressive paranormal track record. Many believe it to be one of Los Angeles’ most haunted buildings. Its infamy is in part spurred on by its association with one of America’s most well known, unsolved murders.

Lobby of the Millennium Biltmore Hotel.

Shortly before her death in 1947 Elizabeth Short was sighted at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel’s bar. This is one of the last places she was seen alive before entering the infamy of becoming the Black Dahlia murder. Elizabeth Short’s body was later discovered dumped on an empty lot of land, completely drained of blood, naked, mutilated and cut completely in half by an incision dividing her torso. The murder captured the attention of the public, remains one of California’s most recognized unsolved crimes and ignited Black Dahlia ghost stories with the Millennium Biltmore Hotel at the epicenter. Many reports of a lady with dark hair, wearing a black dress in 1940’s fashion have been made at the Hotel. She is usually seen on the tenth and eleventh floors, roaming through the lobby or riding the elevator to floor six before disappearing into thin air or walking through a wall. One man claims to have rode the elevator with this lady in black, only to see her disappear when they reached level six. He was shocked to pick up a true crime book in a store a few days later and recognize the ghost from the elevator as Elizabeth Short.

The Black Dahlia haunts the elevators at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel.

Though the Black Dahlia is the most famous ghost to roam the Millennium Biltmore Hotel’s halls, she is not the only one. There have been numerous instances where sightings of a group of soldiers’ apparitions have moved through the lobby, thought to be residual energy left behind from the hotel’s history in World War II. Another spirit thought to haunt the hotel from around this era is the ghost of a female nurse who has commonly been seen on the second floor, where cots were set out for visiting soldiers during the war.

The spirits of children have also been encountered within the Biltmore Hotel. Countless sightings of a little girl have been made and many others have heard her footsteps hurriedly running along the corridors of floor 9, as well as her disembodied, playful giggling. Another more disturbing apparition of a child is rumored to occupy the roof of the hotel. Some reports exist of people who have seen the ghost of a little boy on the roof who has no facial features present.

Plenty more paranormal instances have helped the Millennium Biltmore Hotel build its haunted reputation. Both staff and visitors to the hotel have experienced phantom sounds of a party happening on the first floor, other unexplainable noises and voices, orbs of light, sudden temperature drops, cold drafts and the feeling that an invisible presence is around. It’s no wonder why countless staff have refused and fear working late shifts at the hotel.

Staying at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel

The Millennium Biltmore Hotel is a premier spot to stay within the Los Angeles Downtown area. The location is central, rooms are clean and the lobby and lounge areas are stunning in design. Did I mention it’s a great hotel for paranormal buffs to investigate? I enjoyed my stay here, but didn’t personally have any paranormal experiences. That is not to say they don’t happen, they’ve even been documented via Tripadvisor reviews! Let me know in the comments below if you’ve had any strange or unexplainable hotel experiences.

I also want to visit this hotel and Elizabeth short sound really cool to study about in my 8th grade class I think my teacher and friends would like it to I wish that my dad could take me one day it would be fun

We stayed here for Rose Bowl 2017. I felt a haunted chill the second I walked in. My husband got a severe case of the flu. Our room freezes us out then turned so hot. The maintenance guy seemed reluctant to fix the air. Almost like he knew what would happen. My husband recovered fully when we left. Def a spirit haunting us!

That is so strange! Thank you so much for sharing your experience here with me, Lauren!

The hotel is really cool i do a lot of research on haunted areas and i loved this page

Thanks for leaving a comment, Nev. Glad you enjoyed this article about the haunted Millennium Biltmore Hotel. It is an awesome place with some pretty creepy ghost stories.

I stayed here last year for my birthday in room 1054. I’m an LA native, a Hollywood Historian, and I have also long been obsessed with the Elizabeth Short case, so naturally I wanted to come and experience a night here. Upon checking in, my gf and I felt like we were not alone. When I opened the closet to unpack our bags, I felt a very quick, sudden sense of fear which quickly subsided. I definitely felt a presence for a lot of the time. After going out to dinner we returned to the hotel and took photos and videos inside the lobby. One of the videos captured what I can only describe as looking like shadowy clouds, all moving quickly together, across the lobby near the ceiling. It was pretty amazing to see that.

Then it was time to go to bed. Luckily I am a deep sleeper so I was able to get a restful night’s sleep. My gf, on the other hand, had a hard time sleeping that night. She said she could hear what sounded like a party going on next door. She heard two male voices and one female voice, and she thought it sounded like they were speaking English, but not exactly modern English. She said that their tone and cadence actually sounded like the people in my Old Hollywood movies. She definitely felt uneasy. When we got home I had a field day looking up all of the Ghost stories I could find on the hotel. I was astonished to find out that the spirit of Elizabeth is said to be on the tenth and eleventh floors. We had stayed on the tenth floor. Definitely an amazing experience and I would definitely come back and stay again. My gf, on the other hand, might need a little convincing….

Thanks so much for reading and leaving me a comment, Andrea! It is always cool to hear from other people who have stayed in this hotel and even better to know that you had some strange experiences there of your own. I appreciate you sharing this and hope you are able to convince your gf to stay there again with you soon!

I recently was reviewing photos from a trip I had taken. My first stop was at the Biltmore and I loved everything about the hotel. I explored and had a great time. Never did I have a feeling of unease. A year after while I reviewed photos I could swear I caught a ghost on camera. I was at the bar and there appears in a few pictures a ghostly image of a bartender….as in he was completely transparent. In one photo there is a mirror in the background and where he is standing he does not reflect in the mirror.

Wow! That is crazy to hear! Thanks for sharing this, Erika.

I used this blog as a main source for a paper I did and I was the only one in the grade that got full marks. The Biltmore is one of my #1 interests and it’s my dream to go. I love the history behind it and I’ve researched the amazing hauntings of the building. I know more than I should about the Black Dahlia murder than a thirteen-year-old probably should, but it’s just so interesting. Your website got me hooked on the building and the history behind it. Basically, thank you for writing these interesting articles and informing all of us on these historical places! I really admire you and home to be like you some day!

Hey Breanna! Thanks so much for leaving this comment. It is so cool to hear this, nice work! I hope you are able to make it there for yourself one day. I’m super flattered too. Cheers.

I am glad I read this my husband woke up at 3am in the morning he said the room got really cold saying he heard a man screaming right outside our window but we are on the 5th floor All the way at the end of the hall way 572 corner room when he went tHe window and saw nothing then he heard the sound when a needle hits the record he then woke me up terrified saying we have to leave. I got him to calm down and we started googling things about the hotel and realized this hotel was really haunted so thanks for this article because I thought he was going crazy

Thanks for sharing your experience at this haunted hotel, Lee.

i love this it is so creepy but fun i love the stories

Thanks for reading.

I had went down to the gym/pool area around midnight to workout. Felt a presence or someone watching me but it did not bother me. What did bother me is all of the sudden I felt something went in my body and I felt I was burning up! I realized ok that’s not normal and I left.

Hi Maria. Thanks for sharing your paranormal experience at the haunted Millennium Biltmore Hotel.

Hi Amy, some interesting comments – especially the lady who heard two men and a woman. I have researched the Black Dahla case in detail. The murder was carried-out in the hotel in January 1947. Betty Short was tortured to death over a five day period – it was all filmed. There were two murderers, one was Dr George Hodel (suspected by the FBI) who carried-out the surgical bisection, the other was a very famous Holywood figure who worked for Colombia studios. I’ll leave you to guess who it was but a big hint is in The Lady from Shanghai – a film from which key incriminating scenes (in the crazy house) were cut.

Wow, thanks for sharing Robert!

A few friends and I stayed here a couple weeks ago because we were curious about the haunted stories that people have experienced here. We walked around a few of the haunted floors but once we got to the 10th and 11th floor there was this very weird feeling right as we exit the elevator that we never felt entering any of the other floors. All of our body’s felt very very heavy and out of breath. Even walking it felt heavy just trying to lift our feet to take steps. The feeling went away as soon as we left the 10th floor it was really weird.

Wow, that is so cool. Thanks Natalia for sharing your experience at the haunted Milennium Biltmore Hotel.

I was there this past weekend celebrating my birthday. I told my friends that this hotel feels and looks like the Shining! We stayed on the 5th floor and I had to walk all the way down to the hallway just to get ice. Once I got there the window as well as the shutters were wide open. Found it odd since the weather was very cool. Our room was extremely cold as well. Every time I walked in the hallways it felt creepy and I felt out of place. At times it felt like someone was with me, never saying anything just walking with me. Went for a dip in the pool and I was amazed at all of the pictures I saw that reminded me of Jack Nicholson’s character. Definitely not going back there.

Thanks for sharing, Wanda!

My husband and I just stayed here last weekend. I had no idea of this creepy history. We stayed in room 1116 even . Eek. This has been fun to read and had I known the history I would have been ghost hunting.

So cool to know you got to stay there, Jana! Thanks for sharing.

Hello, we recently stayed here (01/02/2022). We Lost lost power that night. The clerk was busy, so we had to wait for them to check us in. They upgraded our room to the 11th floor (1155). 1215am power goes out. Then doors were throughout the hotel were slamming shut (mainly top three floors) I, personally seen a shadowy figure walk by the room through the crack at the Bottom of the door but noise of footsteps. I’m not much of a believer of paranormal activity. Thank god! because I probably would not have stayed there lol. Def cool to hear what sounded like every door opening and closing as though people were leaving their room, only to find nobody in the hall. Still can’t explain it. But I don’t ever see my wife going back as she was spooked. For me…. There’s a reasoning for everything? Right. Good read thx. On a side note. I stayed here a few years ago to catch a football game and never experienced anything…. Also curious why the hotel light was dim then bright, however the hotel did mot restore power in between? And do they purposely close the doors between hallway corridors for noise at night? They def do not help as they were opening and slamming shut lol.

That figure you saw was interesting. Thanks for sharing!

My daughter and I stayed here in December 2019 for a few nights… A friend of ours lives in LA with her husband and she suggested that we stay with them for the rest of our holiday… She told me to pack my bags while she had to run a few errands and she took my daughter with her. As I was getting into the elevator to press a fifth floor I realize the button was already pressed and nobody else was in the elevator or waiting upstairs it was completely empty. I also had a black dress that was not in the closet and I completely forgot about it until my next flight a week later… looking back Elizabeth Shorts presence was there. I had no clue that she stayed there the night before she died.

A week before visiting I colored my blonde hair jet black. Perhaps her spirit was watching me before I even got there. My whole life I’ve been highly intuitive. It was definitely a creepy experience, however, I don’t feel that she would harm anybody. The hotel itself is absolutely gorgeous and I highly recommend it. There was a huge Christmas tree in the middle of the lobby when we checked in. I guess my only suggestion is save your money if you want to fully embrace this experience.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

The Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles May Be Haunted by the Black Dahlia

Guests have reported several ghostly visions.

The full story of the Millennium Biltmore Hotel and the murder of Elizabeth Short is featured in an episode of House Beautiful’s podcast, Dark House . S ubscribe here .

Between the notorious Los Feliz Murder Mansion and 10050 Cielo Drive , aka one of the sites of the Manson massacres, Los Angeles is full of allegedly haunted houses. But the City of Angels is also home to some of the creepiest hotels with reputations for paranormal activity. Nestled in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles, the Biltmore is one of the most iconic of these Hollywood haunts, thanks to its architectural character, history, and impressive size. The 70,000-square-foot Art Deco marvel features Spanish and Italian Renaissance styles and Moorish detailing throughout, complete with lavish, high-beamed and coffered ceilings. Until the mid-20th century, the Biltmore was considered L.A,'s most elegant hotel. In fact, it hosted the Academy Awards in the 1930s and '40s and was also a popular destination for young Hollywood hopefuls, including murder victim Elizabeth Short, better known as the Black Dahlia. Short was known to frequent the hotel with friends and also took Spanish lessons in the lobby, but, most notably, it was potentially the last place she was seen alive on January 9, 1947. She had asked a new acquaintance, Red Manely, to drive her from San Diego (where she'd been staying for the final month of her life) to the bus station in Downtown L.A. When he wasn't comfortable dropping her off there alone, she requested he take her to the Biltmore Hotel, where she told him she would be meeting her older sister, Virginia. Elizabeth was never planning on meeting her sister there, so we can only speculate as to why she said that, but most people speculate she used the excuse to exit awkward social situations.

Regardless, Manley tried to locate Virginia in the lobby until he left Elizabeth alone there at 6:30 PM to go home. Hotel staff saw Elizabeth making phone calls in the lobby that evening, but investigators never determined who she was trying to reach. The employees confirmed that they observed her alone and saw her get up and leave as if she were signaled by someone outside around 10:00 PM. The bell captain opened the door for Elizabeth as she exited the hotel alone and walked down south into the fog. Her mutilated remains were discovered a few miles south in an abandoned lot in Leimert Park six days later, on January 15, 1947, and her gruesome murder remains unsolved.

With over 300 suspects to sift through, dozens of false confessions, and the transient nature of the victim's life (along with a plethora of other systemic issues), the case remains one of the most mystifying and heartbreaking cold cases in history. And in the many decades since, Elizabeth's ghost has frequently been spotted in the Biltmore. Guests report seeing a pale woman with dark hair wearing a sheer black or gray, 1940s-style dress. She's usually spotted entering or leaving rooms on the 10th or 11th floors or wandering the halls. Author Ginny Meyers Sain accidentally caught a hair-raising snap of a spirit in a selfie she snapped for her son (see the image here ).

Several Trip Advisor commenters have also reported cases of paranormal activity, from one guest who woke up with a figure hovering over her in the middle of the night, to a couple claiming to hear voices with 1940s Transatlantic accents in the room over, which was empty at the time. On top of that, bartenders have reported apparitions passing behind them on a daily basis. Whether it's Elizabeth's ghost or someone else's spirit haunting the Biltmore, we will never know for sure. Indeed, whether Elizabeth was seen alive and well after she left the Biltmore Hotel remains a highly debated subject amongst journalists and researchers today.

Curious to hear more about Elizabeth Short's case and whether or not the Biltmore was really the last place she was seen? Listen to this week's episode of our haunted house podcast series, Dark House , for exclusive ghost stories and insights into the home's twisted history.

The 8 Most Haunted Hotels in Los Angeles

Welcome to the City of Angels, or perhaps more fittingly, the City of Ghosts. Los Angeles is a place where dreams come true, but it’s also a city with a darker side, hiding secrets and tales of haunted hotels.

Thanks to Hollywood’s glamour and glitz, some of the most famous specters from Tinseltown’s golden era continue to linger in the very hotels they once frequented. From silver screen legends to restless spirits of lesser-known souls, these haunted hotels in Los Angeles are home to an array of eerie guests.

Prepare to embark on a spine-tingling journey through the most paranormally-active hotels in LA. Whether they still operate as luxurious accommodations or have been transformed into apartment buildings, these spooky establishments are sure to leave you with goosebumps.

Discover the chilling stories behind these eight haunted hotels in Los Angeles, and get acquainted with their ghostly inhabitants – but don’t say we didn’t warn you.

1. The Chateau Marmont, West Hollywood

The Chateau Marmont

The Chateau Marmont on Sunset Boulevard has served as an escape for the rich and famous since it became a hotel during the 1930s.

Countless A-list actors and other celebrities have reportedly spent considerable time at the Marmont. Some stayed there during work projects while others were there allegedly having affairs.

One of the famous celebs from the past who died in Bungalow 3 is John Belushi. There have been reports of children talking to the ghost of Belushi. Many of the children refer to him as the “funny man.”

According to Angela Bassett, there is an elegant ghost at the Marmont. As the story goes, a spirit cleaned up her room while she was asleep.

Bassett wondered if the housekeeping staff cleaned her room as she slept. The front desk staff confirmed that no one living had been to her room.

Of all the rooms at the Marmont, room 79 is believed to be the most haunted.

Guests have seen a floating head outside the window and seen other ghosts that appear to be knocking on the door. Items such as furniture and other personal belongings have been moved around the room without explanation. [ BOOK A ROOM ]

2. The Mayfair Hotel, Downtown LA

Mayfair Hotel, Los Angeles

A very haunted hotel in downtown LA, the recently refurbished Mayfair Hotel was built in 1927 during the Moorish Revival.

An interesting little fact as well, it was the filming location for True Lies, a movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger that came out in the 1990s.

As well as an affordable stop for guests visiting L.A., the hotel harbors a dark history and is haunted by several spirits.

Paul Dale Roberts (a paranormal investigator), spoke with a clerk at the Mayfair Hotel who had been working there for several years.

According to him, the clerk shared stories about the ghost of a little boy who had been seen on the third floor. He’s described as wearing a blue jean one-piece jumpsuit, and guests refer to him as “the lost boy.”

The Mayfair Hotel is also home to a female ghost. Believed to have been a prostitute during her life, she’s often seen passing through doors on the fourth floor with no clothes on! [ BOOK A ROOM ]

3. Hotel Normandie, Koreatown

Hotel Normandie

The Normandie is another hotel that opened its doors in the 1920s. The historic hotel has been accommodating its guests ever since. Some of the guests remain in the hotel even after passing away.

Some people have said that they have seen shadow figures in their hotel rooms. Others have been unable to sleep because of an unknown, or unsettling, feeling they get while in their hotel room.

Some people have heard odd noises during their stay, including creaking floors.

Whether you feel it is haunted, there is something unusual and unsettling about this old historic hotel. [ BOOK A ROOM ]

4. The Georgian, Santa Monica

With the likes of Al Capone and Bugsy Siegel as regular visitors to the hotel, it is no surprise the hotel is known for ghosts and haunted activity.

Employees claim to have heard disembodied voices, loud sighs, and even someone gasping in the restaurant.

One hotel guest recounts a story of taking a shower only to wake up to find his suitcase empty, the covers on the bed turned down, and the television on.

A front desk clerk reported that a call came in from a room while working an overnight shift. The clerk only heard the sound of someone giggling. It turns out nobody was checked into that specific room. [ BOOK A ROOM ]

5. Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, Hollywood

Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel

The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel has been an L.A. landmark catered to the rich and famous since 1927. The Roosevelt Hotel was home to some of the Golden Age of Hollywood’s elite.

Clark Gable, Carole Lombard, Montgomery Clift, and Marilyn Monroe all lived at the Roosevelt during their lifetime.

Some of Roosevelt’s elite residents enjoyed the hotel so much that they have been reported to wander around the hotel in the afterlife. Montgomery Clift, for example, reportedly continues to spend a great deal of time in room 928.

In the upper levels of the Roosevelt, where Carole Lombard lived, she continues to wander around. The image of Marilyn Monroe appears in a mirror in the hotel. Her ghost has also been spotted in her old room.

Ghostly figures in tuxedos have been spotted in the Blossom Room, the former home of the Oscars. Based on reports, the ghost of a little girl wanders the hotel in her blue dress.

6. The Cecil Hotel, Downtown LA

Stay On Main (The Cecil Hotel)

When the Stay on Main first opened back in 1924, it was known as the Cecil Hotel. The hotel was meant to be a location for business people to stay when passing through Los Angeles.

What ultimately ended up happening at the Stay on Main is that it became the site of countless crimes and tragedies.

Numerous people have reportedly committed suicide while staying at the hotel or were murdered.

With so many horrific incidents occurring at this hotel, it is no surprise that there is quite a bit of paranormal activity at the location.

When it was discovered that Elisa Lam had drowned in a water tank on the hotel surveillance video, the video showed she was acting erratically.

Some believe she was mentally ill with no illicit drugs found in her system, while others think there could have been a paranormal explanation. The elevator she was in refused to close, despite the buttons being pushed multiple times.

There is an eerie and uncomfortable feeling in many hotel rooms due to the location being a former residence of serial killers Richard “The Nightstalker” Ramirez and Jack Unterweger.

One ghost that people have spotted is a little boy who appears outside a window on the fourth floor. What his story is, no one knows. In the lobby, a clock is stuck at 5:27. Why that hour, no one knows.

One man who stayed at the Cecil Hotel claimed that he felt like he was being choked while attempting to sleep. He demanded his room be changed when he was finally able to move. It turns out a murder occurred in that hotel room.

Numerous people have claimed they felt like someone was lying on top of them in bed. Others have reported that it sounded like someone was rummaging through their things while in bed, but no one was in the room.

Cold spots have also been reported in various locations throughout the hotel.

7. Millennium Biltmore Hotel, Downtown LA

Millennium Biltmore Hotel

The Millennium Biltmore Hotel has been many things since it opened in 1923. It has been one of the most popular and talked about luxury hotels in L.A. and hosting the Oscars and being a place of respite for soldiers during World War II.

With a colorful past, it should not be surprising that many consider the Biltmore to be one of the most haunted hotels in Los Angeles.

One of the most famous ghosts that people claim to see in the lobby of the Biltmore and on the tenth and eleventh floors is the ghost of Elizabeth Short, also known as the Black Dahlia. Following her murder, it has been reported that her spirit enjoyed spending time at the Biltmore.

According to other reports, some young children haunt the hotel. A faceless boy is present on the roof while a creepy girl wanders the ninth floor. On the second floor, people sometimes see the ghost of a nurse. [ BOOK A ROOM ]

The most haunted areas include the engine room, where a young crew member was crushed to death, and the first-class swimming pool, where the ghosts of two drowned women have been sighted.

The Haunted Millennium Biltmore Hotel

millennium biltmore los angeles haunted

Built in 1922, the Millennium Biltmore Hotel is as iconic as the names that have walked through its doors. Stars like studio head Jack Warner, filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille, actress Mary Pickford, and gangsters Al Capone and Bugsy Siegel. The hotel was once the location of the Academy Awards (1928, 1935-1939, 1941-1942). It even operated as a speakeasy during the prohibition era. Some elements of this history still remain, with a recessed spot for hiding liquor in the presidential suite, and a hidden door that helped folks evade police by leading them through a room and out to the streets unnoticed. Today though, the hotel is known for a much different reason. The Millennium Biltmore Hotel is haunted.

Millennium Biltmore

There have been sightings of soldiers moving through the lobby, believed to be from World War II. Also from this timeframe is a more commonly witnessed spirit of a female nurse. She frequents the second floor where it is known that cots had been set out for visiting soldiers during the war.

Children have also been spotted. A little girl likes to run up and down the corridors on the ninth floor. You can hear her footsteps as well as disembodied giggling. On the roof of the hotel, the ghost of a little boy has been spotted. This boy has no facial features, and little is known of him.

millennium biltmore los angeles haunted

Finally, you have the ghost of Elizabeth Short, also known as the Black Dahlia . She is said to frequent the tenth and eleventh floors as well as the lobby. Elizabeth Short was an aspiring actress who had moved to California when she was 18 to live with her father. On January 9, 1947, she returned home after a brief trip to San Diego with Robert “Red” Manley, a 25 year old salesman she had been dating (who happened to be married to another woman at the time). Manley dropped Elizabeth off at the Biltmore Hotel where she was supposed to meet her sister. Staff reported seeing her use the telephone in the lobby. While she was later spotted at the Crown Grill Cocktail Lounge, it is believed that the Millennium Biltmore Hotel could have been where she took her final breath. After January 9, no one saw Elizabeth until her body was discovered six days later on January 15, naked, completely drained of blood, and severed into two pieces via  an incision dividing her torso in a vacant lot in Leimert Park, Los Angeles.

The spirit of Elizabeth Short is described as a woman in black, and has been seen roaming the lobby, riding the elevator, and was even spotted walking through a wall. She has not caused any harm to those who see her, aside from the initial jolt of shock, which can be experienced by witnessing any ghost.

Employees have reported hearing what sounds like a party, when no events are happening, and have seen orbs, but nothing that frightens them away. So, next time you’re in Los Angeles, take a trip to the Millennium Biltmore Hotel, where history has been made, and some of it still lingers to this day.

The Millennium Biltmore hotel is no doubt haunted, but is it as scary as a hotel full of clowns ?

The Biltmore Hotel, the Grand Old Dame of Los Angeles

By Chris Callaghan

millennium biltmore los angeles haunted

Los Angeles is famous across the world for its sun-soaked beaches, celebrity residents, and glamorous red-carpet events. But away from the Pacific Ocean views, the million-dollar homes, and the endless flashes of the paparazzi cameras, downtown Los Angeles also has its own fascinating history, true crime tales, famous movie location shoots, and or course, hauntings.

The Biltmore Hotel, Pride of Los Angeles

The Biltmore Hotel opened to great fanfare in 1923 at a cost of just under 9 million dollars, and soon built a reputation as a place to see and be seen. From the mid- to late- 1930s, the hotel played host to the Academy Awards ceremony – welcoming luminaries such as Jack Warner and Cecil B. DeMille alongside era-defining stars of stage and screen like Clark Gable and Ginger Rogers – who both won their Oscars there. Orchestral music filled the elegant hallways and glittering ballrooms, while sumptuous 7-course dinners set the scene for dazzling evenings of glitz and glamor.

The Presidential Suite was favored by US leaders and gangsters like Al Capone alike, and the hotel even served as a speakeasy during the Prohibition Era. And when the world fell into the deathly grip of World War II, The Biltmore became a popular place of relaxation and rejuvenation for war-weary soldiers.

Elizabeth Short, The Black Dahlia, From an LAPD Bulletin

The Black Dahlia

The most infamous event surrounding The Biltmore is without doubt the brutal murder of Elizabeth Short, a Hollywood débutante now nicknamed ‘the Black Dahlia’ for her dark locks. She’d stepped out for an evening’s entertainment at The Biltmore in mid-January 1947, only to be discovered the next morning in a field outside town – her body sliced in half at the waist and completely drained of blood. With her intestines removed and her faced carved from ear to ear, Short had met with a gruesome and cruel death, and it’s a case which remains open and unsolved to this day.

Short’s ghost is said to haunt the lobby, and the 10th and 11th floors of The Biltmore – perhaps that’s where the party was held on the night she was kidnapped and killed those years ago. Visitors to The Biltmore today can raise a glass in Elizabeth Short’s name – the hotel bar serves up a cocktail of vodka, raspberry liqueur, and Kahlua fittingly named the Black Dahlia.

Paranormal Activity in the Historic Biltmore

This grand old dame of a hotel has seen a few ups and downs over the decades, from the roaring ‘20s through to LA’s decline in the ‘70s and beyond – but she’s always had a special place in the heart of the city. It’s perhaps for this reason, and the tales and mysteries that have always surrounded the place, that paranormal activity has been reported at The Biltmore from the bowels of the basement right up to the rooftops.

It’s said that the ghost of a little boy can be seen running around on the 10th floor, which is one of the places where the Black Dahlia’s spirit has allegedly been seen. Other reports include sightings of a ghostly nurse on the second floor – who might possibly be associated with the World War II soldiers – the ghost of a young girl on the 9th floor, and a faceless boy on the hotel roof.

Famous Films Shot At The Biltmore

On top: the Ghostbusters fighting Slimer in The BIltmore Lobby, converted to a ballroom. On bottom: The lobby of the Biltmore today

Many different movies have shot at this amazing location, including The Sting, Chinatown, Beverly Hills Cop, and True Lies. TV shows like  Mad Men, Alias, West Wing,  and Entourage  have all shot here as well. Of course, we're here to talk about ghosts and probably the world's most famous ghost was encountered right here when three New York scientists testing out some cutting edge equipment actually were able to capture the spirit of a ghoul we know today as Slimer when the  Ghostbusters destroyed the place, formerly the music room and now the hotel lobby.

The Biltmore is far from the only supernatural site of interest within Los Angeles – though it's certainly among the most fascinating. Boardner's on Cherokee Avenue in Hollywood is equally intriguing for fans of the paranormal, and often comes up in conversation on our ghost walking tours in Hollywood. Rumor has it that there’s the ghost of a nurse on the second floor and a little girl’s ghost running on the ninth floor. The famous yogi,  Paramhansa Yogananda Plus, died after collapsing in the former music room of the hotel, which is now the lobby. Plus during WWII, the Biltmore was full of soldiers passing through on their way to or from the Pacific front.

The Biltmore might be haunted to some extent, but as Frank Young from the Millenium Hotel clarified for us, “ There are no rooms that we won’t sell due to complaints about ‘supernatural’ occurrences. On nights when we are sold out, all 683 rooms are occupied.” He also tells us that the second floor is now an office space for NationalBuilder, with no ghosts as of yet.

The Ghost Hole

Getting scared by spooky stuff so you don't have to, the millennium biltmore.

millennium biltmore los angeles haunted

Los Angeles, CA

Since its grand opening in 1923, the Millennium Biltmore hotel in downtown LA has accrued its fair share of ghosts. It’s notorious not only for being the site of a still-mysterious death of an America’s Got Talent contestant in 2010 or one of the last places the brutally murdered Black Dahlia was seen alive, but also for housing a menagerie of less high profile ghosts. People say the first floor is where Elizabeth Short (the Dahlia) likes to traipse through walls while the ninth floor is home to a little girl who likes to giggle as she plays hide-and-seek with unaware guests. The second floor boasts a ghostly nurse and a little boy with no face has been spotted on the roof. If this wasn’t enough, the Biltmore also hosted sailors during World War II and ghostly groups of soldiers can still be seen lingering around the lobby.

The hotel’s Yelp page has no shortage of reviews from guests who claim to have experienced supernatural disturbances. There are many reports of beds being shaken at night, orb sightings and a few appearances of a ghostly woman. One guest, Susan B, said that a “ghost and demon convention” was in the hotel during her stay and blames them for the ghostly orb that woke her up on her third night at the Biltmore. Another guest claims that they awoke to what felt like an earthquake and saw a woman at the foot of their bed begging them to come with her. A third admits to switching hotels after her roommate woke up to see a person sitting on top of her as she slept.

All in all, this place seems like a barrel of spooky that couldn’t be passed up.

I was lucky enough to be joined by my good friend Matias and Matias’ good brother Timothy, whom I had never met and who should be commended for being so cool about coming on a ghost hunt in downtown LA with no warning. We got a bit turned around as we approached the Biltmore and ended up sidling in through a back entrance, ultimately arriving in what looked like a lobby for an office suite. We wandered around awkwardly for a few moments before Matias addressed the security guard sitting behind the absurdly large front desk: “So, we heard this place is haunted.”

The guard, who just had the word “SECURITY” stamped on her nameplate, shook her head emphatically. “No, I’ve never seen anything.”

“There are stories, you know, but they’re not true,” Security continued.

“I’ve worked graveyard shifts here,” she told us, “so if anything was going to happen, it would have by now.” She nodded emphatically to herself.

“But I’ve never seen anything. And if I do see anything, I just keep on moving.” She pointed at the radio sitting on her desk which was emitting some low-level soul music. “I’ve always got this thing on. I never let it get silent in here. And if this one dies I’ve got a backup radio and an iPod too. It’s the silence. I won’t do it.”

At this point she seemed to remember her initial point. “So, you know. I’ve heard the stories, but none of them are true, you know.”

Our quiet nodding seemed to be some sort of accelerant to her thinking out loud.

“They say someone had a heart attack in that elevator right there.” She pointed at the elevator to the left of her desk. “Elevator Seventeen. That’s the story.”

IMG_1158

She made a disparaging face before again seeming to forget her central not-haunted thesis. “One time I was making my rounds real late, and Elevator Seventeen was just… open. Just sitting there, open, nobody called it or anything. Probably just, you know, it was that one’s turn to act up.” She cast a furtive glance at the elevator. “I didn’t tell anyone about it, just kept walking, minding my own business.”

At this point it became pretty clear that Security lived in almost constant fear of her extremely haunted workplace, which she kept just barely  hidden under a veneer of nonchalance which was ready to crumble at the slightest prodding. We kept nodding and listened as she told us about a girl who’d asked to bring in a ouija board whom Security had flatly turned away, telling the girl she was more than welcome to return to contact spirits on a day that Security wasn’t working.

At this point Security for the thousandth time remembered herself and wrapped up her monologue, again repeating, “but you know, nothing’s ever happened to me. I’ve never seen anything.”

I think she was still looking over her shoulder toward Elevator Seventeen as we followed her directions toward the main lobby. We didn’t go back that way but I’m positive if we did we would have found a desk covered in a decade of cobwebs and an elderly caretaker insisting that nobody had worked that desk since “the incident” ten years ago.

After traversing a couple of oddly blank hallways we found ourselves inside the main Biltmore and I think Matias’ first words really summed the place up:

“Wow, this place is very haunted.”

It really was. With the grandiose vaulted ceilings covered in intricate patterns leering above the echoey marble floors and paneled walls it was really hard to believe the hotel hadn’t been constructed with the sole intention of one day being haunted.

IMG_5956.jpeg

Almost immediately we came upon what I would bet money was an exact replica of the black and white group shot from the end of  The Shining.

The hotel was surprisingly devoid of people, which only amplified the feeling that we had wandered through a wormhole and ended up back in the 30s, or maybe inside a prototype for the new Tower Of Terror. I’ve heard reports that the hotel is somewhat run down now but it still packs a huge dose of opulence; I kept expecting to be escorted out of the building for having no stakes in oil fields or diamond interests, or whatever Rockefeller shenanigans rich people were up to in the 20s.

IMG_6107.jpeg

We decided to call it quits as the sun began setting outside; not for ghostly reasons but more because of the group’s very not ghostly car-theft concerns. Although we might not have seen any Dahlias, soldiers, or faceless boys, every second spent in the Biltmore felt as though they were just behind the next corner.

Rating: 5/5 Transparently Terrified Security Guards

Prognosis: I defy anyone to step into this hotel and try to claim it’s not at least a  little  haunted.

There's so much to love in its history and you can channel so many eras within its walls. The 1920s and 1930s saw the start of a glamorous relationship with Hollywood - both on and off-screen - that has continued to this day. That same period saw the romanticism of Prohibition and the Jazz Age. The 1940s saw the hotel playing a patriotic role when it housed servicemen during World War II. The 1950s brought guests back who wanted to celebrate in style. And the following decade saw the beginning of Camelot at the hotel with John F. Kennedy and the 1960 Democratic National Convention that brought the idealism of a new age.

That aspirational feeling has not left the Biltmore. It is an architectural masterpiece that offers guests and visitors elegance in our modern times.

Welcome to the Millennium Biltmore Hotel .

Me and my twin brother worked at the biltmore hotel,I believe the year was 1986.We were asbestos removal specialist. We were working in the basement, around early in the mornings we would hear a little girls voice ,echoing and sounding kinda far away, yelling out”help me”.I would turn to my bro and be like “you hear that”and he would be like”yeah i hear a little girl yelling”we reported it to the security but they said they checked around and there’s no little girl anywhere around. We heard the yells every so often for the next year or so. . We

that’s creepy. that so called little girl was a demon pretending to be a little girl ghost/spirit.

Not every ghost is a “demon” in disguise.

Sadly this hotel has been torn down but I use to work down the street and we would take clients there for lunch and when walking by the restrooms I had heard a little girl playing and thought why would a little girl be by herself over here but never saw anyone.

The Biltmore not only stands, but has been restored to it’s former glory. It’s gorgeous with a little creepy thrown in. Great place for a drink or lunch.

I just shared at the Biltmore for six nights. I did explore the entire hotel, requesting access to the locked second floor, since elevator cannot get you there either. The option is even removed from the guest elevator and the freight doesn’t even up. I am a believer but very hard to convince. I am convince. I felt three sessions of tapping on my right shoulder. I saw, felt and smelled other things as well that I do not wish to share. It is very true.

' src=

This is what happened to me and my mom, we were staying on the 7th floor and we came back from The Grove to put our clothes that we got up in our room and we were going back down to the main floor to get dessert. We took the elevator and it was just us two in the elevator and it slowed down at the third floor and at the second floor it stopped but the doors didn’t open, mind you we hit the main floor button, and the elevator dropped down to the basement and we hit the bottom and the doors opened in the basement and no one was there it was just me and my mom alone. We both ran up the stairs to the lobby then up to the main floor and looked at the elevator key that shows where all the elevators are in the hotel and the one we were in was back up towards the top of the hotel. I’ve tried to do some research on the elevators in the hotel but I haven’t found anyone else reporting on weird occurrences similar to mine. Maybe it was an elevator malfunction but it was still weird and freaked us both out.

' src=

I stayed here in 2014 and the elevator started violently shaking on the 10th and 11th floors while me and a friend were exploring. Also we kept feeling cold bursts of air and seeing orbs of light. It was terrifying. Not to mention the blood stains on the carpet of the 4th floor hallway.

I was staying at the Millenium Biltmore back in August for the 2018 Labyrinth Masquerade. I only knew of the Black Daliah and WWII soldier stories/sightings and thought that was neat. My husband and daughter stayed with me on the first night of the event, Friday August 24th and nothing out of the ordinary happened. We stayed in room 861. On Saturday, August 25th, my best friend came to stay with me while my husband and daugher went home (we only live 20 mins away, but for an event like this, it is so much more nicer and convenient to stay at the hotel if you’re attending both nights). The evening was filled with fun and so on and I was in bed by 1am. I don’t drink, so I know I wasn’t out of my right mind when this happened… I woke up suddenly around 5am (Sunday morning) to what sounded like a child playfully running above my door in the hallway. It sounded like they were giggling and the running sounded as if they were on a hardwood floor. If you ever lived in an apt building and neighbors had hardwood floors and young kids, you know what I mean by that distinct sound. Anywho, it was loud enough to wake me and all I thought was, “dang, someone’s up super early for a Sunday”. My friend was asleep. The playful running went on for a bit. I only got up to use the bathroom and I soon fell back asleep. On Monday back at my home, my friend and I decided to look up the Biltmore’s haunted history and I was floored when I saw multiple stories of what is said to be a little girl on the 9th floor running the halls and playing around…. I was so excited to read that. Then it dawned on me… the entire hotel with rooms, every floor, is wall-to-wall carpet. How could it possibly sound like running with shoes on hardwood floor?? I may never know, but I wasn’t freaked out by it.

I worked Security at the Biltmore in downtown L.A. back in 2012 to 2013. In that time I had actual contact with the “little girl ghost” on the 11th floor while collecting breakfast lists. Our encounter lasted maybe 2-3 minutes while I tried to get her back to her room. She never talked but was still an eerie experience. My 2nd encounter was with a lady by the Security Command Center. Between the hours of 1230am-430am she would peer out at the loading dock seemingly mesmerized by how technology had advanced. I could see her only through the corner of my eye, but she would vanish if I looked head on. She was dressed like a flapper with pearls around the neck. My third encounter was some type of “entity” in the human resources/accounting department late December ’12 early ’13. There were whispers going around of some type of presence down there and Security began escorting employees after 1200am. On patrol one night in accounting I began hearing noise that sounded other worldly. It was a “person” sitting at a desk but dialing the phone, slamming a coffee cup on the desk, opening file drawers, etc. all at the same time with speed a human just cannot do.

There are many other stories i have during my time there. Hit me up if you wish to know more.

I worked Security at the Biltmore in downtown L.A. back in ’12-’13. I had many experiences such as making contact with the “little girl” ghost on the 11th floor Halloween night ’12(full torso apparition and conversation), seeing a “flapper” on the lower garage between 1230am-430am, the freight elevator that would open when you were halfway to it, then close only when you had turned around and pressed the button for your floor( it was believed that it was haunted by an old time elevator operator). Lastly, there was an “entity” in one of the departments that got so bad escorts were needed by the Security team between the hours of…..1200am and 430am.

Hit me up for lots more stories. There are plenty encounters that I and others experienced 🙂

the film Ghostbusters in the 1980s was filmed at the Biltmore!

This was the place Elizabeth Short, also known as The Black Dahlia, was last seen before her widely publicized mutilated corpse was found in Leimert Park in January of 1947.

I had the creepiest encounter of my life when I stayed in a room on 10th floor where Black Dahlia was most sighted. I stayed with my 3 best friends. So around 2:40 AM we left our room to lookout for any ghostly sightings. As we left the hotel room and had crossed the more than halfway. Eloise (one of my bestfriends) had to go to the restroom so i went with her in the lobby washroom. So she went in the WC and i waited right in front of the toilet where she went. when she came out she went to wash her hands and literally out of nowhere the toilet at the corner of the ladies restroom flushed. As soon as it flushed the door opened by itself and there was no one in there. We both could see that in the mirror and went pale. We ran out of the restroom at the top of our speed. And went back to the room thinking that it was enough for ghost sighting. So we all slept. Around 5 AM I felt a shortness of breathe. It was like someone was grabbing my throat. And then I starting shouting and suddenly I was woken up by Griffin(Another Bestfriend) and he turned the light on. What he told made us all leave the hotel that very time. He told me that he saw a black woman like figure sitting on top of me and strangling me. I had chills when he told that. I wondered, “Was that the reason of my shortness of breathe that night? or was it just an illusion?” These things happened on the second day of our stay. And the only thing I have to say is that this place sure has something.

My story is actually for three of us, me, my wife, staying in a room on the 11th floor of the Biltmore, and my brother, staying in a different room there as well, but on the same floor. We were meeting my brother for a reunion of sorts in 1999 as he was only there for one night leaving the country the next day. After having a wonderful time eating at the bar, using the Roman pool, reminiscing, we retired to our rooms. The gals at the bar with the street side entrance told us they always work accompanied by other workers or in pairs because of weird occurances there. After midnight in the early AM hours my wife and I heard furniture being moved above us, feet moving, and it progressed to stomping and what sounded like furniture being dropped, thrown or worse. We thought a wedding in one of ballrooms had moved upstairs and got out of hand. By about 3AM or 4AM it crescendoed to what sounded like furniture being trashed above us. We were pissed. We ended up getting up and got coffee as the sounds finally stopped. We were at the front desk later and were talking to the clerk about what we expected to be a big cleanup for them above the 11th floor. My brother joined us from his room at checkout and get this- he had the same experience in an entirely different wing on the same floor! The clerks said this was impossible. There was no one on the 12th floor. No guests that weekend. The wedding ended at 8pm on the ballroom floor with no overnights. They told us only an elderly couple was staying in the tower but many floors above us. We never could understand what this was and we feel this was paranormal in nature. We all work for government and do not seek experiences that we do not expect in hotel stays. We love the historic hotel but we will never stay there overnight again.

I spent 4 days at the millennium Biltmore hotel and went to the basement just by myself for quite a while. past two kitchens. past a hardhat area I eventually got to a hallway with wooden padlock doors labeled 1 through ten on either side. I am quite the adventurous type but as I looked down this hallway, I sensed a man in a suit or a tuxedo at the end. I didn’t actually see him but as I entered this area I could tell he was startled by my appearance. I felt a cold rush down my spine and I immediately turned around and started running back the way I came, even getting lost for a second because I had gone too deep. my adrenaline literally caused me to find the right stairwell back up towards where the pool area was after another few twists and turns. this was by far, and coming from someone who explores places I shouldn’t in the south eg. Atlanta abandoned insane asylums or Wisconsin native American scalping sites which I will jump the fence for or find my way in. This Hotel still causes my blood to run cold and I recomend if u are an adventurer. go with someone else. the deep basement of this place is difficult to find and should be. Be careful if ur daring enough to explore the basement alone and please do not linger. this is an extremely haunted lace where even a skeptic is lost for words. Venice beach was pretty though. – buzz lightyear

The town of Midnight Falls is once again filled with monsters, zombies, chainsaw-wielding maniacs and hungry cannibals who are terrorizing visitors at the long-running Los Angeles Haunted Hayride .

“This is pretty much a tradition for us. We already got chased by the crazy chainsaw guy and got lost in the hillbilly house. It’s fun, it’s like a party atmosphere here,” said North Hollywood resident Josh Avanessian, as he exited one or the haunts at the annual event.

The Hayride, which is marking its 15th anniversary this year, opened in late September and runs through Oct. 31 at Griffith Park. It’s a Halloween celebration made up of a trio of mazes that include a walk through a morbid mortuary, a tense stroll through a horrifying neighborhood where there are more tricks than treats and a new haunt that takes people into the home of cannibals.

The mazes are located at the edge of the fictional town of Midnight Falls where people can take pictures in front of Halloween props or hang out by the main stage and listen to live music from The Monte Revolta Show, a horror-themed musical and comedy revue. There are standalone attractions and, of course, the main event, the hayride through the dark wilderness.

“This year, it’s going to be absolutely epic,” said Victor Mathieu, general manager for the Haunted Hayride. “Overall, across the board, this event has grown and improved drastically. We’re extremely exited about this season.”

Some of the new elements include changes to the Hayride, which is a little bit scarier with newly added horror scenes and more creepy characters, but it’s also a lot more comfortable. In previous years, people had to sit on a bed of hay spread around the floor of the wagon. Now the wagons are new and include seating in the form of square piles of hay lined along the sides of the wagon.

“Last year, you had to lay down on the wagon, now it’s much better and it was scarier than last year, too, because they had more people coming at you,” said Sun Valley resident Rene Zapien, who was at the Hayride with his wife and two daughters.

While his youngest, four-year-old Trinity, handled the ride pretty well, his 11-year-old daughter Dorothy screamed a few times when creatures popped out at her during the ride.

“Yeah they got me a lot of times. It was good, besides the fact that they really scared me,” she said.

Also new this year is Hellbilly Halloween, a walk-thru haunt that focuses on a cannibalistic family who live in a run-down home that’s filled with bodies, blood and terror. It’s a pretty large haunt that includes various rooms, a lot of turns and heavy fog that can confuse people as they try to find the exit. So, expect to spend some time in this house of horrors.

“It was pretty scary, I was sweating  and I was like ‘When is this going to end?’ I was looking for the end because it was a little too long for me, but it was fun,” said Monrovia resident Sofia Lauren as she exited Hellbilly Halloween.

People can also fight back against the zombies in a new attraction dubbed Zombie Splat. It’s similar to a carnival shooting game, but here people are using rapid-fire guns to shoot live actors who are portraying zombies with gelly balls, which are like paint balls, but much softer.

“That was really fun. It kind of gets out your aggressions. I think this may be the only place where you get to fight back against the zombies rather than them sneaking up on you,” said Torrance resident Ryan Wade as he excited Zombie Splat.

How much is it tor parking?

It's $50 to park at the hotel and $20 to park directly across the street at the Pershing Square garage.

This is my Go to place to stay when I come to LA. The hotel is so beautiful. I really loved the drink vending machines they have now. The pool room is cute. I wish it was open 24hrs. It feels like you stepped back in time to the 1920's. I love staying here.

This hotel was comfy, the staff was great, but it could use a facelift in some areas. We visisted during a huge event, which we did not know was happening. It would have been nice to know , but it made for great people -watching. Comfy bed Good water pressure. Water offered at all desks. The bar is a bit expensive, and the restaurant always seemed to be closed.

Trish, thank you for your feedback. We're glad to know our team members added a positive touch to your stay and that you found the hotel comfortable. We understand your point about the aesthetics in certain areas and we strive to continually improve. We also appreciate your suggestions about communicating significant events; it can certainly add an exciting element to the stay. Do know that our dining options have varying hours of operation, which may have caused some inconvenience. Your notes on our bar and restaurant are duly noted for future evaluations. Looking forward to welcoming you back for an even better experience next time.

My advice is only stay at this hotel if the Motel 6 is sold out. Shame on me. I had a different perception of the iconic Biltmore Hotel. And I did not check the ratings. Where to begin....Lukecool showers, loud housekeepers gathering outside the thin doors/walls each morning early, had to ask for a DO NOT DISTURB sign as opposed to it being available in the room, horrendous food options available including a sparse cafe (using that word lightly), no room service, concierge who was unhelpful. I'll stop there.

It's regrettable to hear about the experience you had. It's disappointing that certain adjustments regarding in-room amenities and dining options didn't meet your expectations. We also apologize for the inconvenience caused due to noise issues and communications from our colleagues that affected the comfort of your stay. All of your feedback is crucial for us, rest assured we'll look into these matters for further improvements. It is our hope that you will consider giving us another opportunity to provide you with a better experience.

If I look at the trend in stars, I doubt this place cares. I stayed in the Millenium in Auckland with none of these issues. The staff are great. The management needs to hear this: Classic historic building or not, your windows are too thin. They need to be repaired. They should not fall open. There are firm beds. There are soft beds. What you have is a hard bed. Hard as in sleeping on the floor might be softer. Resort fee but no resort. Sneaky. There's a pool and a struggle gym. That is not a resort. The chairs at the desk are too low. No one can seriously work at the desk. Coffee is $6 to take away. A refill is another $6. If I sit down to eat and get 1 breakfast item, its free coffee and cheaper. Make it make sense.

Sep 26, 2023

Bret, it's important for us to hear feedback like yours, as it helps us improve the overall guest experience. We're glad to know that our team members made a positive impression. The window issues you mentioned are being reviewed. Providing comfortable accommodations includes a good night's sleep, so your comments regarding the bed quality are taken into account. Our intent with the resort fee is to enhance the guest experience, not detract from it, and we'll certainly look into your thoughts on the matter. In reference to the office chair and the coffee pricing, we also appreciate your insights. These will be taken under consideration as we strive to ensure the highest level of convenience and comfort for our guests. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

Love the Biltmore and its history! Great architecture, definitely a jewel of DTLA! I have been here many times for events. They have various events all through the year. There are bars (featured in movies -"Chintaown", "Bugsy", "Beverly Hills Cop", etc and TV shows - as the hotel has been through the years) where you can enjoy a drink with a friend, a great excuse to go out and have a nice night out. I also like to bring friends and family here visiting us for its history (it's a 100 years old!), I like to give them a little tour and show them the photo gallery of the Academy Awards that were once hosted here! Lots of glamour and stories. Nice staff, clean restrooms, great holiday decorations, right near Pershing Square. Great hotel for your visit, for a little downtown tour (pop in), events or a drink in a cool, dark lit bar, full of atmosphere and stories (last place Black Dahlia was seen). Part of LA History and one of my favorite hotels in town!

My husband and i stopped here as part of our LA tour only to be greeted by the sound of nonstop blaring horns coming from what I later learned was a hotel strike. We were glad to get inside and see the art deco of the halls and the original lobby. Three academy award ceremonies were held here and a large picture in one of the rooms shows Walt Disney sitting near David O'Selznick and a young Henry Fonda. As we were exploring the first floor of this grand hotel I could not help but recall that this was the very place I had stayed on my first CA trip many years ago with my late mother. At that time she had told me it was an old hotel and I remember seeing how old the furnishings were in the room we were assigned and the small fixtures. More importantly I remembered it because this hotel from the outside looks exactly like the old hotel in my city which to my knowledge had undergone extensive renovations. The valet at the entry apologized for that loud noise and personally I can't see how anyone could stay here under those conditions. Nevertheless the lobby along with the original lobby and art deco hallway are worth just looking at to see the grandier of what was part of Hollywood history. Located in downtown LA in the financial district.

Arlene, your detailed feedback is greatly appreciated. It sounds like you enjoyed the historic charm of Biltmore Los Angeles. Our heritage and the cinematic history connected to our hotel are indeed something to marvel at. Notwithstanding the noise caused by external events, we hope you found the interior aesthetics pleasing. We fully understand how such disturbances can impact a guest's overall experience and we apologize for any inconvenience caused. Certainly, we aim to have our well-preserved Art Deco details and curated galleries transport our guests back in time. Your recollections of past visits add to the tapestry that is the Biltmore's legacy and we are pleased you've been part of that. We sincerely hope any future visits can be carried out in quieter circumstances to allow you full enjoyment of the hotel's grandeur. Thank you for choosing Biltmore Los Angeles.

The worst follow up to the smallest problem. My friend and I went to the Biltmore for dinner before our show at the Ahmanson. We parked in their parking garage and had dinner in the Gallery Bar spending $100+ on our dinner. We leave within less than an hour and receive a $10 off coupon for the parking garage from the restaurant so our less than an hour parking will only be $10. Instead, when I get to the machine it tells me my coupon is "expired". There's nothing on it but a QR code. I asked the security guard that's at the desk in the lobby of the parking garage why my validation won't deduct the $10 and he says that I must owe $20. I said no this should only be $10 I haven't even been here an hour. So he tells me he has no idea and I must go back into the restaurant and get another validation which I do. The restaurant also doesn't know why my validation doesn't work. No one wants to take the blame for anything. I stop by the bellhops desk and ask them what I should do to get my deduction And they say to stop at the gate and talk to the parking lot attendant on my way out and get the discount that way. There is no parking lot attendant on duty when I drive out and now because the security guard didn't know what to do and the restaurant didn't know what to do. They've now kept me longer than an hour and I am trying to get to my theater show. My validation still won't work. And now I've been there over an hour because no one has any idea about anything and just sends me everywhere else so now my $10 parking that they're trying to charge me $20 for is now $25. I have to pay to get to my show but I call the next day. The hotel manager wants to pass the buck as usual to the parking garage and the parking garage wants to tell me it's a third-party that they deal with so I am passed to Ray the parking garage manager who tries to be helpful as he can but the hotel is not helping the situation at all. Ray asked me to text him pictures of my parking ticket and my validation which I do. He also asked for how much I was charged and the last four digits of my card that I used and he's going to report it to third-party. Nothing. I text him back days later still nothing. He finally tells me a week or so later that he's put in a request to accounting. Days after that still nothing. This all happened on August 23rd and it is now Sept 12th and the Biltmore staff is so incompetent they can't seem to refund a simple $15 to a customer for parking. Complete rip off artists passing the blame down the line so they don't actually have to provide any customer service to anyone. No stars.

Parking ticket and the supposed $10 off validation.

I like that is a older place with a lot of charisma. The price is right! We didn't use the elevators however we heard from a friend that the elevator dropped while she was on it and scared the bajeebers out of her. We were here for a conference and the catering was outstanding. Plenty of food, enough to take home! They were a bit chinsie on the alcohol. The company throwing the event is in charge of choosing the bar times but this place shut down tighter than a drum when it was time to close the bar with not even a warning or fill up so plan ahead if you want to take a drink to dine with. We went to the bar and got one there. That bar was expensive and the bartender was okay.

Dorothy, we are grateful for your reflections on Biltmore Los Angeles’ vintage charm and affordable pricing. It sounds like the catering provided during your conference was plentiful. However, we regret any discomfort caused in regards to the elevator and the bar timings. We continuously aim to ensure all aspects of your stay are as enjoyable as possible, and it seems like in this instance, we fell short. Our team members are working on ensuring better communication regarding our bar hours. We hope to welcome you back at another occasion, allowing us another chance to impress you.

The history! The architecture! Wow! I just love this place! I've stayed once before several years ago and just loved the feel of this place. And while recently walking around DTLA we stopped in for looksy. I love the grand entrance.. The ceilings are opulent. The staff is friendly. The ballrooms divine! Found ourselves walking down a hallway with old photos of the place in its glory days. In a city that tears down history and rebuilds boxes of no immigration.... It's great that there are still a few amazing historical buildings left of yesteryear that hopefully future generations can admire.

What happened to this iconic hotel?! The Biltmore used to be one of the most beautiful hotels in LA. My wife and I were married here many years ago and we thought it would be fun to bring our kids here. What a mistake. It started by our check in. We arrived at noon. We wanted to see if they had rooms available. They did... but they would only release them with a $50 fee. WTF?! Even motels will release rooms as long as their clean and ready. What happened to basic customer service?! We paid the fee and left for lunch and the Dodgers game. We came back at 10pm and we realize there is a full rave concert behind our room. How were we not warned of this?!? I called down to the desk and the guy lies and says that the show will be done at 11pm. We go on Google and the flyer advertises that the show will end at midnight. At the least, a manager moved us to a bigger room (nothing was available on the quieter side of the hotel), she removed the early check in few and comped us breakfast for the following morning. Still... very disappointed in our stay here.

After three months of rolling strikes, second L.A. hotel reaches tentative agreement with union

Workers in red union shirts hold signs that say 'on strike' outside the Biltmore hotel.

After nearly three months of sporadic strikes at dozens of hotels in Southern California, the union representing workers at one property — the Biltmore in downtown Los Angeles — announced Friday that it has reached a tentative deal for higher pay and benefits.

The union, Unite Here Local 11, said in a written statement that once the contract is ratified, the 300 workers at the Biltmore will see “unprecedented wage increases that keep pace with the soaring cost of housing.”

The agreement also provides improved healthcare, more robust staffing, pension increases, and more inclusive hiring procedures for formerly incarcerated people and unauthorized immigrants, said union spokesperson Maria Hernandez.

“We applaud the Biltmore Los Angeles for putting their workers and our city first,” said Kurt Petersen, co-president of Unite Here Local 11 in a Friday news release by the union.

The hotel, in the financial district, is the second Southern California property with which the union has struck a deal. The first was the Westin Bonaventure , which reached a tentative deal just as contracts were set to expire June 30, for more than 15,000 hotel workers at some 60 properties in Los Angeles and Orange counties.

LOS ANGELES, CA - JULY 2, 2023 - Hotel workers picket in front of the Intercontinental Hotel as members of Unite Here Local 11 joined dozens of other southland hotels who went on strike today in downtown Los Angeles on July 2, 2023. Hotel workers formed picket lines at many of the businesses in an effort to secure higher pay and improvements in health care and retirement benefits. Staff cuts, long commutes, rising costs: Hotel workers say they simply can’t keep up

Clocking in for picketing that began as early as 6 a.m., hotel workers expressed determination — as well as nerves.

“We are very pleased to have come to an agreement with Unite Here Local 11 on behalf of our loyal and dedicated employees,” said Jimmy Wu, general manager of the Biltmore Los Angeles, according to the news release. “We can now focus together on looking after our guests and providing the level of service our guests have come to expect from the Biltmore Los Angeles.”

Unite Here Local 11 declined to give specifics about wages and other economic details of the agreements. Unionized workers have not yet held a vote to ratify the Westin Bonaventure contract.

The Westin Bonaventure averted a strike, but at dozens of other properties , hotel workers have been walking off the job intermittently, a few days at a time, ever since the Fourth of July weekend.

The latest burst of strikes kicked off Monday, when workers at five Santa Monica hotels walked off the job. On Thursday, the strike expanded to Beverly Hills properties, including the Waldorf Astoria, the Beverly Hilton and the Fairmont Century Plaza.
