If you mean to simply convert the content inside a .GHO to a ISO, that's not easily possible because the semantics of the two don't really line up very well. The ISO 9660 and UDF filesystems don't have many of the capabilities of NTFS/ext3/etc which .GHO images are designed to preserve, and therefore if you want to perform such a format conversion then it's up to you to work through those differences in capabilities to determine what you want to happen.

If you happen to mean put a .GHO in an ISO image along with Ghost, then there's a tool for that in Ghost Solution Suite, the Ghost Boot Wizard. In practice, the currently available versions of the GBW are limited, because of the extreme age and poor design of the optical disk code in it. The current editions of GBW contains a number of hard limits on the size of ISO 9660 filesystem it will build, along with limits on the types of media it supports; it's not possible to use the full capacity of even a dual-layer DVD, let alone a Blu-Ray drive.

In 2009 around the time Symantec shut down active development of Ghost, I had rewritten all the optical-disk code in the GBW to remove all the hard-coded limits and add full support for dual-layer DVD and all types of Blu-Ray media; however, that work was done in the Ghost Solution Suite 3.0 code line and was too complex to backport to GSS 2.5 because the optical disk code in GBW was shared with Ghost (let along the fact that we no longer had any staff or budget to effectively QA it).

Given the readily availability of third-party tools to work with ISO images and larger drive capacities, it's probably best to build a base ISO with the GBW and then use that as a template for mastering new ISOs which contain the desired image, given that dual-layer and Blu-Ray media are preferable for modern image sizes.

Thanks for the response. Actually we have to install window 7 on specific computer for some testing purpose. We got window 7 image in .gho form. I just have to install that image to computer. We were using Ghost server before but now we dont have license for that and we moved to WDS but right now in short i just have to install that specific window 7 ghost image to one of the computer.

I dont want to go into this .gho. I just want to either convert it to .iso so that i can easily install it.

An iso is not going to make it possible to install an image in any way I can imagine.

A ghost image is a recording of the contents of sectors on the hard disk plus additional information about the partition. As Nigel indicated, converting it to an ISO would not be straightforward and would not achieve your objective either, as it would not create an installable image in the way that a Windows 7 installation iso is written.

Depending on the version of Ghost used by the creator of your Win 7 image, it may not be a viable image either. Only the latest GSS version 11.5.1.2266 can image Win 7 successfully, and again, there are two partitions that need to be captured, not just one.

Don't waste your time. Get a normal Windows 7 installation disk and install that instead. You may have to gather some drivers (although Win 7 is pretty good at finding them using Windows update) but it's going to be a lot quicker than trying to use the Ghost image without a current Ghost environment.

Finally, if the image was created using Norton Ghost then this happens to be a different product to Ghost Solution Suite.

That's actually not accurate; the changes for Windows 7 support were absolutely microscopic, and didn't involve the image format. There's nothing about Windows 7 that wasn't in Vista, in fact, it's just that the split-load method which Windows 7 installations tend to want to use do was not the install default for Vista (in Vista, splitloading was only really used for Bitlocker installations).

Basically, the work for this lives in the restore side, in the adjustments made to ensure that the system is still bootable; generating a new MBR disk signature if a disk restore is being performed and replacing the volume mounts stored in the restored system's registry to reflect this, along with BOOT.INI adjustments in versions of NT prior to Vista, or BCD edits for Vista/Win7 (along with the other bits and bobs Ghost has always done to adapt changes in volume size and disk geometry).

These restore-side processes need to do a lot of work to probe what kind of system the target is, and in the case of split-load Win7 installs there's just a few changes to the process to make it fire-and-forget (you actually could do split-load restores manually with the earlier GSS 2.x versions but there's a quite specific process that you'd have to follow, as with Bitlocker deployments).

Depending on the exact nature of the relationship between you and the person or organization you are doing this testing for, they may well be able to assist you; the organization you are assisting can employ VAR licenses for Ghost; these are used by computer manufacturers to deploy machines and also allows them to build recovery images and bundle a restore-only version of the Ghost cloning executable which allows that image to be redeployed to the same hardware. Since VAR licenses explicitly are designed for resellers, they don't have the same prohibition on sublicensing that the normal licenses do.

[ I'd note, by the way, that although sublicensing has been explicitly forbidden by the normal EULA, in practice it's something that is not uncommon; companies that perform outsource IT services sometimes purchase tools like Ghost Solution Suite on their own account, to be used on the machines owned by (thus, in effect on behalf of) the companies they are contracted with. In essence, as long as all the client machines which Ghost is used with can be traced to a license, it's mostly a case of "no harm, no foul"; Symantec's main interest in sublicensing derives from it being used to aggregate purchases to achieve bigger volume discounts. But as Symantec isn't being denied the license revenue it's due if things were done strictly by the book, no-one really cares. ]

Depending on the identity of the organization you are working with, they may already use VAR licenses but if not they are extremely inexpensive.

Just to be clear, Ghost is not and has never been licensed on the basis of servers; Ghost instead is licensed on the basis of clients to which an image is deployed/from which one is taken. If you have a client license for some particular version of Ghost, then any and all of the tools in the edition of the suite being licensed - including the various server components as well as boot disks and what have you - can be employed with that client machine. Essentially, everything in the suite is an adjunct to the client license; even if it's not code that is run on the client, it exists to aid the client deployment.

For a machine to have a .GHO deployed to it, via any method, that machine must have a suitable client license and that license stays attached to that machine until it is (in the specific term used in the EULA) "put beyond use", which in practice means that the deployed image is erased from the machine via some method such as a disk wipe (at which point the license can be reassigned to a different piece of client hardware).

The license that is attached to a client to permit use of Ghost with it is perpetual and does not expire, until it is removed as I describe above.

Nigel, the version of Ghost used to create the image is unknown, and I recall a recent posting of yours ( https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/ghosting-error-windows-7 ) which stated that earlier versions did not handle BCD edits. It would be nice to assume that the providers of the Ghost image used a version that could handle BCD edits, but experience has shown that it is dangerous to assume anything.

Sure, but the BCD edits (and disk signature changes, etc) are all handled on the restore side - they have to be. It matters a lot which version you restore with, vastly less what version you capture with. The majority of the changes to Ghost tend to affect the restore side, in fact, because its methodology for capturing images is so simple - almost everything clever anyone needs it to do is on the restore side.

Basically, what you wrote clearly implied that if the image was captured with an old version it won't be deployable, but it's the version you use at deployment time that matters. Plus, there's also the option of using disk signature preservation - while that's not a good idea in deployment scenarios, for a one-shot deal like this it's not likely to be a big deal getting the image restored in older versions.

2. Copy the ISO to your grub4dos USB drive (made using RMPrepUSB and the Install grub4dos button) to the \_ISO\ folder on your USB drive

3. Mount the ISO and copy the NBRTSTRT.exe file and the two folders under the \Sources folder (i.e. the two folders DRIVERS and SYMANTEC_NBRT )

4. Add the following to your menu.lst file (press F4 in RMPrepUSB)

Almost all laptop computer manufacturers such as HP, Dell, Asus, Lenovo, Apple, Acer and more no longer provide Microsoft Installation DVDs, Windows operating system are now hidden in a ‘secret’ drive within C drive. The reason being that – It is better for the environment. and Faster formatting and installation time.

The only drawback is what if your hard disk crashed? What if you decided to upgrade your SATA hard disk to SSD hard disk? How do you go about replacing your hard disk together with the Windows software in it? You can’t copy the files since it is hidden, you have no choice but to ‘clone’ it. Without further ado, here are 5 methods and software that enables you to clone your laptop and desktop hard disk.

Microsoft Windows 10 Backup Settings comes free with all Microsoft Windows operating systems. This feature enables you to create a duplicate copy of your drive with additional hidden drives. A Windows Complete PC Backup image contains copies of your programs, system settings, and files. It is a complete system backup that you can use to restore the contents of your computer if your hard disk or entire computer ever stops working.

1. Rescuezilla

Rescuezilla is an open-source easy-to-use disk imaging app that’s fully compatible with Clonezilla — the industry-standard trusted by tens of millions. Yes, Rescuezilla is the Clonezilla GUI (graphical user interface) that you might have been looking for. But Rescuezilla is more than a Clonezilla GUI!

Disk imaging makes a backup of your computer’s hard drive which is managed as files stored on an external hard drive. If your hard drive fails, you can restore your disk image and within a few minutes all your documents and settings will be restored to the exact same state they were in when the last snapshot was taken.

Rescuezilla lets you perform backup, restore and recovery actions, even if you aren’t able to boot into your regular operating system. It does not matter if you use Windows, Mac or Linux. It doesn’t matter if you can’t even login. Download and write the ISO to a USB stick, and reboot your machine. 2. Redo Rescue

Redo Rescue, formerly Redo Backup and Recovery, is a free backup and disaster recovery software. It runs from a bootable Linux CD image, features a GUI that is a front end to the Partclone command line utility, and is capable of bare-metal backup and recovery of disk partitions. It can use external hard drives and network shares.

When disaster strikes, Redo Rescue restores your system to perfect condition in minutes, overcoming unforseen damage, malware, accidental deletion, hackers, mistakes, and bad luck. Restore your system to a blank new drive and be up and running in minutes and preserve drive layout and restore data to different parts of the target drive.

G4L is a hard disk and partition imaging and cloning tool. The created images are optionally compressed and transferred to an FTP server or cloned locally. CIFS(Windows), SSHFS and NFS support included, and udpcast and fsarchiver options. Backing up Windows partitions requires the use of a bootable G4L CD or running g4l via grub4dos.

4. Clonezilla

Clonezilla is a partition and disk imaging/cloning program similar to True Image® or Norton Ghost®. It helps you to do system deployment, bare metal backup and recovery. Two types of Clonezilla are available, Clonezilla live and Clonezilla SE (server edition).

Clonezilla live is suitable for single machine backup and restore. While Clonezilla SE is for massive deployment, it can clone many (40 plus!) computers simultaneously. Clonezilla saves and restores only used blocks in the hard disk. This increases the clone efficiency. With some high-end hardware in a 42-node cluster, a multicast restoring at rate 8 GB/min was reported.

• Many File systems are supported: (1) ext2, ext3, ext4, reiserfs, reiser4, xfs, jfs, btrfs, f2fs and nilfs2 of GNU/Linux, (2) FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS of MS Windows, (3) HFS+ of macOS, (4) UFS of FreeBSD, NetBSD, and OpenBSD, (5) minix of Minix, and (6) VMFS3 and VMFS5 of VMWare ESX. Therefore you can clone GNU/Linux, MS windows, Intel-based macOS, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, Minix, VMWare ESX and Chrome OS/Chromium OS, no matter it’s 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x86-64) OS. For these file systems, only used blocks in the partition are saved and restored by Partclone. For unsupported file system, sector-to-sector copy is done by dd in Clonezilla.
• LVM2 (LVM version 1 is not) under GNU/Linux is supported.
• Boot loader, including grub (version 1 and version 2) and syslinux, could be reinstalled.
• Both MBR and GPT partition formats of hard drive are supported. Clonezilla live also can be booted on a BIOS or uEFI machine.
• Unattended mode is supported. Almost all steps can be done via commands and options. You can also use a lot of boot parameters to customize your own imaging and cloning.
• One image restoring to multiple local devices is supported.
• Image could be encrypted. This is done with ecryptfs, a POSIX-compliant enterprise cryptographic stacked filesystem.

5. Macrium Reflect Free

Macrium Reflect Free is a Free Disaster Recovery that works on Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1 (32 and native 64 Bit) and Windows 10. It is the fastest disk imaging and cloning software! What makes this different from others is the support for GUID Partition Table, also known as GPT.

GPT is meant as a replacement to hard drives using a MBR partition table, which has a 2.20TB size limitation and extends upon UEFI. Using GPT a drive could support between 8 and 9.4 ZB depending on the sector size. Some of the more unique features are:

• Access images in Windows Explorer.
• Schedule backups.
• Linux Rescue CD.
• Windows PE Rescue Media (RAID support).

6. Acronis True Image WD Edition

Acronis True Image WD Edition Software helps you to completely clone your current system drive onto your new WD hard drive. Cloning makes an exact copy of your old system drive on your new WD hard drive, including the operating system, applications, data, preferences, and email settings.

Everything will be present and operate exactly as it did on your old hard drive. Acronis True Image WD Edition now supports WD Advanced Format Drives and ensures that all partitions are optimally aligned. Key Features of Acronis True Image WD Edition Software:

• Drive Cloning – Copies the source drive to a new WD drive, leaving all data on the source drive.
• Drive Migration – Erase the source drive after the new WD drive has been imaged.

7. Acronis True Image Seagate DiscWizard Edition

Seagate DiscWizard only works with Maxtor and Seagate disc drives. The software lets you quickly install your new disc drive with wizards that guide you through the processes of creating and formatting partitions on your disc drive, transferring data, and backing up your data.

HI. AOMEI now also wants money for cloning a disk.

AOMEI Backupper Standard frer for MBR to MBR only and wants upgrade to Pro for GPT>GTP and MBR>GPT.

Glad to see AOMEI Bakcupper. I have used it to back up system and disk and it works well.

As a pro user (and Linux user too), I suggest Clonezilla: I succesfully created and restored both Linux and Windows (7, 8, 8,1, 10) several times. It’s free, always updated and bootable (it runs from a live CD/USB).

Just one thing: Clonezilla has different architectures for different targets and two branches: one based on Debian and one (called “Alternative”) based on Ubuntu. You can usually run the Alternative version (i386 or AMD64, it depends on your PC) on every modern OS.

BUT REMEMBER: If you have to create and image of an UEFI based PC, you HAVE to use the “Alternative Stable 64 bit Version”. The Alternative 64 bit version supports both uefi and secureboot. All the other versions (included 64 bit debian based one) don’t support secureboot.

One good thing of Clonezilla is that it creates a compressed (about 50% as default) image of the USED SPACE and not of all the disk or patition.

Finally, if you can manage the Linux command line it has a lot of tools you can use to recover data, check disk health and so on…

WARNING! If you have to check and repair NTFS file system you HAVE to use the classic “ckdsk /f” from a Windows bootable live (you can use the official iso from Microsoft website: Linux support for NTFS fix is not still complete and not always effective. For Linux filesystem (e.g. ext4) you can use “fsck” (see the Man page for usage), which is more or less the equivalent of chkdsk in Windows.

Hi Bert, great comment! I use Clonezilla too, but sometimes I need to use alternative software when I need clone a hard disk with higher size to a small one. What you suggest? And other issue is clone from a small hd to a bigger. The bigger stay with the size of the small and I don’t find a solution in Clonezilla to adjust these parameters. Any suggestion? Thanks.

Go to expert mode: For small to large use -k1 For large to small use -icds (as long as you know you have enough space to fit the image size)

I use Ghost for Linux, start it with g4l or use the Partedmagic CD/usb booto or use the g4l bare iso. G4L never lead me down. I started with other software, Clonezilla lead me down 2 times, unacceptable in the imaging/backup world. G4L was the next one and although it looks for some people “old fashioned”… it works great and thats what i need for our Debian systems.

For our Windows systems I’ve used Ghost 11.x till Win10 … it does not work. There were work around options reported but never tried them. Such a software should be reliable out of the box. For Windows I now used AOMEI Backupper Standard Free. It works extremely simple and so far all my trials (I recently started) look great. I found out that is seems better to download the Win PE environment via the menu rather than using the iso internally.

i have a 210MB hard drive that is for industrial computer. i’m trying to clone over to a new hard drive. the hard drive may have dos on it and the program to run the machine. all the duplicators i have found cant access this small of drive. any suggestions?

try the dos version of ghost. I use it on legacy machines.

I used to use Ghost many years back so I understand the . I have a HD that is on the fence (light stays on too long) so PC has slowed somewhat (win 7 ntfs). What should I use to clone these days. Free download wanted to create bootable CD and clone to new SATA drive. It’s a WD 3gb drive in a Vostro. Cheers. John

Gs Richcopy 360 for both backup and sync files and folders is simple and quick… This is the best I think and really easy to use
