75% Hot-swappable Mechanical Keyboard

The 75% keyboard layout is the perfect balance between functionality and portability. To reduce the size of the keyboard, we have removed all of the unnecessary keys you never use, while maintaining the essential keys you use everyday for work and gaming. This creates an incredibly compact keyboard that fits perfectly in your backpack, on the desk, and even on your lap for on-the-go typing.

Furthermore, with hot-swappable switches, you can simply pop out the mechanical switches and replace them with those of your choosing, making for the ultimate customizable build. Mechanical switches define the clicking feel and sound of your keyboard. With hot-swappable switches, you can simply change how your typing feels and sounds all without having to buy another keyboard.

Customized Crystal Mechanical Switches

As the name implies, the Phantom 81 was designed to be a completely transparent mechanical keyboard unlike any other out there in the market. For this reason, we have designed our own proprietary see-through switches for the Phantom 81. The Phantom 81 comes standard with the KiiBOOM pre-lubed Crystal Switches, which are strong, smooth, and completely see-through. These Crystal Switches feature the same durability and technical specifications as any other mechanical switches available from other major manufacturers, but with our own stylistic flair. The KiiBOOM Crystal Switches are linear-style switches, which have significantly less “clickety-clack” noise than other tactile switches, making it suitable for office and study settings. Furthermore, the linear switch is the preferred mechanical switch for gamers who need the speed and accuracy without any hindrance in their typing.

Customized Crystal Keycaps

To achieve the fully transparent, we have also designed unique crystal clear keycaps for the Phantom 81. Matching with the entire theme, the Crystal Keycaps allows you to see through the entirety of your keyboard. Furthermore, these Crystal Keycaps perfectly illuminate the RGB lighting effects, creating a fully customizable typing atmosphere unlike any other.

The Phantom 81 embraces all the latest keyboard trends. In particular, the clear color expression is the best quality among the products I have seen so far. In addition, it boasts a heavy weight while being smaller than a tenkeyless keyboard.

When I first unboxed it I noticed how it’s heavier than all my other keyboards. It’s sleek and well built as well as very very sturdy. Right out of the box you can feel how luxurious it feels. Definitely worth the price and a staple in my collection. I saw that kiiboom released a different colored version as well as a 65% version which I will be purchasing in the near future. It may not be from a popular peripherals brand, but the KiiBOOM Phantom 81 is among the best-feeling and most appealing keyboards we’ve tested. Thanks to its gasket mounted design it’s just as satisfying to type on as other mechanical keyboards, but not as loud. It’s on the thicker side, however, which means you’ll need a wrist rest to be comfortable.

KiiBOOM Phantom 81: One-minute review

You need only take the KiiBOOM Phantom 81 for a quick spin to realize that the leading peripheral manufacturers now have their work cut out. It’s just one of the many mechanical keyboards from smaller, lesser-known brands that are giving big-name brands a run for their money, as mechanical keyboard enthusiasts seek more attractive products and modders demand more hot-swappable options.

And that’s a great thing.

This is not to undermine established brands like Logitech and Razer, of course. They’ve not only mastered their craft, and continue to release truly impressive products; they’ve also paved the way for these smaller brands to exist. But, with more competition than ever before in the peripherals space, everybody’s been upping their keyboard game, which means more and better options for us consumers.

The KiiBOOM Phantom 81 75% keyboard is a great example. Amidst this mechanical keyboard revolution, KiiBOOM has still managed to do something that sets the Phantom 81 apart from the competition. Most of the keyboard is clear – hence the Phantom name – from its case down to its custom switches, allowing it to light up like a rave club or something out of a futuristic sci-fi movie.

It doesn’t just rely on its looks, though. It also delivers performance that’s on a par with what you’d expect of wireless keyboards from better-known brands. And we’re all about it, so much so that we can honestly say this is one of the best keyboards we’ve truly enjoyed testing in quite a while.

A top-quality mechanical keyboard like the KiiBOOM Phantom 81 doesn’t come cheap. This one, which is available to US, UK, and Australian customers, can be had for $159 / £128 / AU$233.18, putting it in the upper mid-range. It isn’t cheap, but it’s well-priced for what you’re getting: a robust mechanical keyboard that delivers great performance, has an attractive feature set, and is hot-swappable (so you can mod to suit your current aesthetic).

It’s also more affordable than other popular transparent keyboards on the market. The Lofree 1%, which we’re currently testing and will have a review on soon, will set you back $219 (about £185 / AU$325) while the CoolKiller CK75 will cost you $179 / £165.99 / AU$237.80. That makes the Phantom 81 one of the more affordable options if you’re looking to get on the transparent keyboard bandwagon.

KiiBOOM Phantom 81: Design

Even if you’re not into that clear or transparent look, the KiiBOOM Phantom 81 is still worth checking out, especially if you have a small desk setup. It’s got a 75% layout, giving you 81 keys (yes, including arrow keys) plus a dedicated volume knob in a compact, smaller-footprint design. It’s a well-made, premium-feeling keyboard, which is something you don’t often get from lesser-known brands.

Still, it’s the transparent aesthetic that’s the huge selling point here. The Phantom 81 isn’t completely clear. The plate, switch pad, and PCB board are non-transparent. However, every keycap and the case are clear. KiiBOOM even took to designing its own see-through switches, aptly called Crystal Switches, to complete the look.

That’s more than enough to make it distinctive. But, KiiBOOM also had the brilliant idea of adding south-facing per-key and underside RGB lighting that, when combined with the keyboard’s clear design, lights up the whole thing (and the rest of your desk) like it’s Christmas.

The keycaps are removable so you can swap them out or mix and match them with other keycaps. But, because this keyboard is hot-swappable, you can also pop out the switches and replace them with your favorite ones or a different set with a different feel.

One thing that’s missing here is an on/off switch. However, there are two toggles in the front next to the USB-C port, one for switching OS (Mac or Windows) and one for switching the connection type (wired, USB 2.4GHz, Bluetooth 5.0). Next to these is the garage where the USB dongle is stored when not in use.

Because the Phantom 81 is a compact keyboard, you’ll find a slew of shortcuts here, and the cheat sheet to those is in the included manual. That means that while you can customize the RGB lighting on the KiiBOOM Driver, you don’t need to download the software to change the RGB effect (there are 19 available), color, and brightness. If you want to customize the keyboard even further, however, the software will also let you create and assign macros, change key sensitivity, and make layers.

KiiBOOM Phantom 81: Performance

Three connectivity options
No noticeable latency with wireless connection
Satisfying typing experience that’s quieter

One primary concern people have about investing in peripherals from relatively unknown brands, apart from overall build and quality, is whether or not the performance will be on par with offerings from established manufacturers. And, it’s a valid concern, but not something you’ll have to worry about in this case.

The biggest performance issue we’ve seen on the KiiBOOM Phantom 81 is the fact that it takes a second for it to re-establish its wireless connection with the device it’s currently paired with when it’s been on standby for a while. But, while that can be irritating sometimes, it’s something we’ve seen from the likes of Roccat and SteelSeries.

It’s also on the thicker end, which means that you’ll need to invest in a cushioned wrist rest, if you haven’t already, to elevate your wrist for a comfortable experience. If you don’t, your wrists and hands might fatigue faster or start to feel discomfort after a couple of hours.

Apart from those, we’re hard-pressed to find anything wrong with its performance.

The Phantom 81 delivers on-point typing performance, whether you’re using the USB-C cable or it’s connected wirelessly, with no noticeable latency. It’s a fantastic mechanical keyboard for productivity — not to mention, a good peripheral to use if you’re often multitasking and juggling several devices, thanks to its multi-device, multi-platform capability.

We wouldn’t recommend it for playing fast-paced or competitive games, but we have played Kena: Bridge of Spirits with it, and it works just fine. There is a bit of key travel at 3.6mm, but you can adjust the key sensitivity via the software so you might be able to set it to keep up with the current titles you’re playing.

The crystal switches are linear type switches, which we have to admit we’re currently partial to, and are satisfying and not at all fatiguing to type on. Unlike other linear mechanical switch keyboards, however, the Phantom 81 sounds and feels slightly different. That’s due to the gasket-mounted design that isolates the plate and separates it from the keyboard case. As a result, you’re getting less of that clickety-clack feeling and noise, and more of a quieter “thonk” and cushioned feel.

That’s not necessarily good or bad, more just preferential. If you like the traditional feel of a linear mechanical keyboard, we recommend checking out the Lofree 1% as well so you can compare.

KiiBOOM doesn’t offer any specific information about its battery life rating, just that it has a large 4,000mAh battery. However, we’ve used this keyboard for 8 to 10 hours per day for five days without needing to charge. And, that’s with its per-key RGB and side lighting turned on at full brightness.

Should I buy the KiiBOOM Phantom 81?

Buy it if....

You’re looking for an amazing typing experience The KiiBoom Phantom 81 is a joy to type on with its smooth concave keycaps and satisfying presses. And, its gasket-mounted design means you get that satisfying mechanical keyboard sound but a little quieter.

You want an attractive, unique design With its crystal clear switches and keycaps as well as south-facing RGB, the KiiBoom Phantom 81 is a stunner of a keyboard.

Don't buy it if...

You prefer a slimmer keyboard The KiiBoom Phantom 81 is on the thicker side and doesn’t come with a wrist rest. So, if you want something slim, this might not be the right keyboard for you.

You need something cheap While the KiiBoom Phantom 81 is reasonably priced for a mechanical keyboard, it’ll still set you back over $150 / £100, which is hardly affordable for those with a limited budget.

Shipping Policy

The final shipping cost and estimated delivery timeframe will be available to you during checkout. Currently, we offer 3 International shipping methods which are steady and easy to track. Priority worldwide shipping, Premium ( Partial countries) and a faster Express shipping . The estimated times stated below are not guaranteed. An international package could experience delays like postal strikes or severe weather or Cov-19 situation. All shipping ways, PO Box address is not acceptable.

If you don’t receive your order within the estimated time frame provided below and suspect that it might be lost in transit, please contact Mechkeys Support ( [email protected] ) and we can look into the order with the courier. Lost-in-transit requests must be submitted to Mechkeys Support within 3 months of the date of shipping or before the courier archives the tracking information.

The estimated time of delivery is usually 3-7 business Days depending on the country. Includes detailed tracking and confirmation of delivery.

1. Kindly remind that we will deduct the round freight before refunding you if customers reject to pay the duty tax. (P.S. Tripple freight for returning the product)

2. For some remote areas , there may be an additional charge of US$ 35. We have stopped the normal registered airmail service due to the extremely long delivery times which made us unable to guarantee the delivery of your order before a certain date. If the package shipped, can I reject to receive it?

We offer a 7-Day Return Policy . You have 7 days to return an item from the date that you received it. (confirmed by Shipping Tracking record). To be eligible for a return, your item must be unused and in the same condition that you received it. It must also be in it's original packaging. If it is plastic sealled when you get it , it should remain plastic sealled. Some types of goods such as customized products cannot be returned.

You will be responsible for paying the shipping costs for returning your item. Shipping costs we send the product to you are non-refundable（ write us in advance how much it is）and Custom Duty when it come back to China is non-refundable too ( we will send you receipt after we get it ). If 7 days have gone by since you received your item, unfortunately, we can’t offer you a refund or exchange.

Warranty Reason Returns

If the product doesnt work properly during warranty leadtime and confirmed to be defective , the item could be returned for repair. Mechkeys will afford the freight to send it back to you after repair.

Wrong Item reason Returns

Pls contact us at very first time if you get the wrong item and dont use the product , keep the package as original as it is and we will cover all the freight and tax back and send you correct one immediately.

We may refund you for following reasons,

1. Returned items due to the policy of returns once we get it.

If you paid by credit card, It will arrive you within 7 working days usually. The time will depends on the bank handling time. If you pay by paypal, It will arrive you within few hours. If you didnt get the refund during above leadtime, write us to check the reason.

Mechkeys warrants to the original purchaser that the Product(s) shall be free of any defect in material or workmanship for a period of one year for labor and one year for parts from the date of the original order except the items listed below:

Should the Product(s) supplied by Mechkeys prove defective because of improper workmanship or material as reasonably determined by us, Mechkeys agrees, at its option, to either repair or replace the Product free of charge , excluding any shipping or handling charges.

How can I Request a Warranty replacement or repair?

Can I cancel an order?

Once an order is placed, you have less than 24 hours to cancel it if it is not processed yet. Once the order processes and is accepted by our warehouse, you may still request cancellation, however please know that cancellation at that stage is not guaranteed.

Can I return the products that I don’t like and get a refund?

Any item returned must be complete with all accessories, hardware, manuals or instructions, and in the same "new" condition as when it was when shipped to you. Please send us the photos or videos of it.
Any item returned incomplete or with physical damage such as scratches etc., excessive signs of use or abuse will not be accepted for return.

We do not accept the return of customized products. Defective products covered under warranty could be returned for servicing, but NOT for refund. If the returned item is used, damaged, or missing any parts, or is damaged during return shipping because it wasn't packaged correctly, we might provide a partial refund to account for the loss in the item's value.

What’s in the Box?

KiiBOOM clearly paid a lot of attention to its packaging. If I saw this on a shelf, I’d probably buy it just for its packaging. The case is all in purple and a very attractive simple rectangle with the nameplate on the front and the brand name on Almost All Sides, and on the back, we have some contact information about the company. Inside, our keyboard is very well packed in soft plastic. I must say the accessories included with this keyboard are rather modest and they are a fabric USB-C to USB-A cable (braided), Keycap And Switch Puller, Kiiboom Stick, and User Manual. Also, The 2.4Ghz receiver is embedded in the keyboard case.

Design & Build Quality

The KiiBOOM Phantom 81 is an acrylic case keyboard with a 75% layout for the perfect balance of functionality and portability creating an incredibly compact keyboard that fits perfectly in your backpack, on your desk, and even on your lap for typing on the go. It features 81 keys for a fully functional yet compact and portable design with a knurled metal knob on the top right that acts as a volume wheel. Despite being 75%, it has dimensions of 330 x 150 x 35 mm and a weight of 1.5 kg.

It doesn’t have a numeric keypad, but we still found the Del, Home, PgUp, and PgDn keys in a bar on an island separate from the rest with a space featuring different status LEDs: CapsLock, battery status, Wi-Fi usage, and Bluetooth usage.

The body of the Phantom 81 comes with a choice of three colors: Clear Black, Clear Yellow, and Clear. It is a completely transparent mechanical keyboard unlike any other keyboard on the market. This is what gives it a modern, somewhat distinctive look that I really like. Manufactured using additional boron foam layers, the gasket’s mounted structural design is strengthened and acoustically enhanced for a responsive and quiet typing experience.

On the bottom side, we have the 2.4GHz dongle slot, which comes in black. There is also a golden container on its side that contains the buttons to change between the modes of Windows and Mac, in addition to the modes to switch between Bluetooth, USB, dongle, and finally the USB Type-C port. At the corners are the heavy-duty white rubber feet, so you don’t have to worry about the KiiBOOM Phantom 81 moving around your desk during furious typing sessions.

On the back, there is also a metal plate with a KIIBOOM logo that increases the weight and thus stabilizes the keyboard on the surface you place it on.

Crystal Keycaps

KiiBOOM has done a very good job with its pre-lubricated crystal keycaps that I find soft, comfortable, and precisely defined are strong, smooth, and completely transparent, which actually generate RGB lighting effects perfectly. The material type was not specified, but it is almost certainly a transparent polycarbonate to allow you to see the entire keyboard, with a long section where the key stem is inserted which is immediately visible under the symbol printed on the pressed surface. However, its transparency allows the backlight to illuminate the entire keyboard. And don’t lose a lot of clarity either! The font is quite classic, and all of the letters, numbers, and symbols have a strong black color.

You can simply take out the mechanical keys and replace them with the keys of your choice, which makes the final design customizable so you can easily change the feel of typing and sounds without having to purchase another keyboard.

KiiBOOM keyboard switches are special models called KiiBOOM Crystal Switch. These are hot-swappable MX 5-pin linear mechanical switches compatible with 3-pin or 5-pin-type switches Each slot has south-facing LEDs with over 19 RGB lighting presets and additional customization in the software, you can make your environment Lighting is suitable for any setting. Which is another point in favor of this keyboard. And since it’s also completely transparent, the readability of the keyboard is good even with the LEDs turned off. it’s clear that it has been meticulously chosen to match the aesthetics of the keyboard.

These crystal switches have the same durability and technical specifications as any other mechanical switches available from other major manufacturers, but with a special KiiBOOM style. KiiBOOM Crystal Switches are linear style switches, which have much lower noise than other tactile switches, making them suitable for office and study settings. Moreover, the Linear key is the mechanical switch of choice for players who need speed and accuracy without any hindrance in their typing. It’s pre-lubricated and feels great.

Typing Experience of KiiBOOM Phantom 81

The typing experience on this keyboard is really amazing, the keys are perfectly spaced apart and I have no problem pressing another key accidentally as I do on other keyboards. The stock fasteners and switches were already a little oiled at the factory, and are just as usable. It has a nice clean touch, and the stab is better than the cherry stab that comes with many cheaper keyboards.

Inside The Keyboard

And to build don’t worry, since the keyboard is transparent and everything is really easy to take apart, and you can guess what components are and where they are without taking them apart, just remove the 8 screws that hold 2 body sections together and the other 4 screws on the board (once you remove the part upper body), then be careful to disconnect the cable that holds the connected PCB. It is a Gasket Mount keyboard. This means that the aluminum bronze plate has silicone gaskets placed between the two sections of the body to absorb sound (about 7 mm) and underneath again we find the PCB. There is nothing else under the PCB to be clearly visible from the back. In fact, it is enough to turn on the keyboard to observe the back of the printed circuit and the various LEDs running along the entire edge, and in fact, even the body, as well as the keys, are all lit and customizable using a keyboard shortcut or software.

Connectivity

The KiiBOOM Phantom 81 can be used in three different ways to connect: wired via a USB-C cable, via Bluetooth 5.0, or via a 2.4GHz USB dongle that you find built into the back of the keyboard. You can connect up to 3 devices at the same time and the transition is smooth and with a simple click. As we all know Bluetooth is great for efficiency and pairing with multiple devices like smartphones, but 2.4GHz wireless has the upper hand when it comes to latency.

To switch between different devices via the three modes, you can use the physical key next to the USB port, or use the keys FN + 1,2, and FN + 3 to enable you to switch between devices connected via Bluetooth. As for compatibility, the keyboard can be used with any computer, tablet, or smartphone with a Bluetooth, USB, or Type-C port on Windows and macOS, or on Android. Next to the USB port, there is also a button to switch from Windows to macOS mode.

KiiBOOM Driver Software

KiiBOOM Phantom 81 comes with KiiBOOM Driver for Mac and Windows that you can download directly from the official website by following this link. This program allows you to fully customize RGB effects, program custom keys, and assign macro functions.

The keyboard is already programmed with a whole series of shortcuts that you will find in the manual. Including the classic shortcuts that can be activated by pressing FN, you can start applications, control the playback of multimedia content, modify laptop parameters (such as screen brightness), and so on. There are also several shortcuts for adjusting backlight parameters, including patterns and brightness for the LEDs that run along the edges of the keyboard called Sidelight. Moreover, it is possible to adjust the standby parameters from the program, which makes it possible, for example, to turn off the LEDs after 1 minute of inactivity and for the keyboard to go into complete sleep mode after 10 minutes.

On the main page of the software, there is an FNLayer key to manage the functions to be activated by pressing FN, and through it, you can also adjust the sensitivity of the keys in addition to reprogramming the knob to press but to rotate. Recording macros, thanks to a fairly classic interface with delay indicators, a macro menu, and other classic functions. Only the keys can be replaced when they wear out, and even if the battery fails and you can’t find a replacement, the Phantom 81 actually works via USB-C, without the battery connected. More importantly, it has RGB with good software and although this keyboard is a bit heavier than the other options, but it offers great performance on it, and with the color of the panel clean, it is really worth the price.

Build quality and design

The KiiBOOM Phantom 81 V2 keyboard comes in four colour options – (1) purple, (2) pink, (3) blue, and (4) clear. The unit I have is the latter. No matter which option you choose, both offer a transparent aesthetic that lets you see the internals of the keyboard. This see-through design trend seems to be gaining some traction since products introduced by Nothing Technology.

To be consistent with the clear and transparent design, even the switches used are KiiBOOM’s Crystal which are also see through. Being a transparent design, KiiBOOM did not waste the opportunity to add RGB lighting, so those who like a light show on their desk will definitely find this up your alley.

Build quality of the KiiBOOM Phantom 81 V2 is solid. Since the Phantom 81 V2 was made from acrylic, I was expecting the keyboard to be quite light. But boy was I wrong. The KiiBOOM Phantom 81 V2 has actually quite some heft to weighing over 1kg, likely contributed by the metallic back weight. The quality of acrylic used feels high quality as well. The top and bottom case is thick and feature nice curved edges. The whole keyboard feels very premium and well built, and does not feel cheap even though it’s made of acrylic.

The USB-C port is located off center, towards to left side of the keyboard. It is housed alongside two switches, one to toggle between the three modes of connectivity, the other to switch between macOS or Windows. There is even recessed area to store the 2.4GHz USB dongle when not in use.

The keycaps feels like SA profile, which offer a gentle scoop in the middle for an ergonomic typing feel. The colour or rather the lack of, follow the same design language going on in the KiiBOOM Phantom 81 V2 – clear and transparent. The transparent keycaps are decently thick and I believe they are made from polycarbonate (PC). The legends looks to be printed since PC is being used.

Typing acoustics & experience

The KiiBOOM Phantom 81 V2 has a unique gasket mount structure, where the PCB and plate assembly is wrapped by a silicon pad which has extended edges that acts as the gaskets. KiiBOOM’s implementation of this gasket structure in combination with the new PC plate, helps to prevent a stiff typing experience commonly felt on tray mount boards. You can feel a subtle amount of flex overall, with the bottom center being the most prominent area.

The sound profile of the KiiBOOM Phantom 81 V2 has marbly-like elements reminiscent of what you’ll get with the use of PE foam on the PCB. There is slight audible clack which is rounded out by the use of the silicon layer. If you prefer to lower thockier sound, the stock sound of the KiiBOOM Phantom 81 V2 should be your cup of tea. The stock stabilizers are surprisingly well-tuned. I didn’t experience any rattling or tick sounds. But if you want to use your own, the KiiBOOM Phantom 81 V2 uses screw-in stabilizers which is a good choice compared to use plate-mounted ones.

One last point to note is that the PCB is hot-swappable supporting both 3-pin and 5-pin switches. If you do swap out the switches you may have to consider changing out the keycaps as well since they are transparent.

Connectivity, battery, and support

KiiBOOM Phantom 81 V2 supports three modes of connectivity – (1) wired via USB, (2) Bluetooth 5.0, and (3) 2.4GHz wireless. The keyboard also has a switch to toggle between macOS or Windows, which is really appreciated as I constant swap between both operating systems. This was your Alt key will work as the Command key when switched to macOS mode.

There is a 4,000mAh battery in the KiiBOOM Phantom 81 V2 but no advice on how long it lasts. I’ve used it for close to two weeks now and haven’t encountered any low battery warning. KiiBOOM Phantom 81 V2 doesn’t support VIA so if you want to do any key remapping, you’d have to download KiiBOOM’s Phantom 81 software .

The KiiBOOM Phantom 81 V2 offers a very unique crystal-like transparent design for a pre-built keyboard. It is incredibly well-built and feels premium. There are several mechanical keyboards in the market but this does not stop the influx of new products. While many people focus on the well-known brands, the lesser-known brands are releasing pretty decent products. One such product is the KiiBOOM Phantom 81 transparent mechanical keyboard. This device is quite attractive because of its unique appearance and it looks premium even at first glance. It could easily add a touch of class to your gaming table.

The KiiBoom Phantom 81 has a 75% keyboard with 81 keys. The Phantom name suggests that it is completely see-through from its switches down to its case. This allows the RGB lightning to reflect without any obstruction. In addition to a wired connection, this keyboard also supports wireless connection with two options – via Bluetooth or USB 2.4GHz.

For a mechanical keyboard, there is very little or no room for ugliness, can the KiiBoom Phantom 81 take care of that? Let’s take the KiiBoom Phantom 81 on a quick ride to ascertain if this brand is ready to give the more popular brands a good run for their money.

1. Design and Appearance

The design of this sleek yet tough-looking keyboard is spectacular. Because it is a transparent keyboard, an overhead light would reflect on it and could interfere with the inscriptions on the keycaps. However, once the lighting in the room is not overhead the keyboard, all inscriptions are crystal clear and see-through. The unit we received is a Transparent-silver model.

This means that the top of the PCB board holding the chips and circuits of this keyboard is silver. There is a gold version as well as a black version. Apart from the top of the motherboard and a small section of the rear that holds the connectivity knobs (also sliver), all other parts of this device are completely transparent.

Weight, Dimension & volume control

This means that if you are gaming with this wireless keyboard, you can seamlessly reduce or increase the volume by simply turning the knob. This feature works irrespective of the device that the keyboard is connected to (laptop, tablet or mobile phone).

At the far right of this keyboard, there is a middle gap that has four indicator lights. The first is for Bluetooth (red light), the next is for the 2.4G wireless connection (green light), the next is for caps lock and the last is the battery indicator. On the rear, we have a USB Type-C port which can be used to put the keyboard on wired mode or charge the device. We also have a switch to select between Windows or Mac as well as a Switch to select between Bluetooth, Wired mode (Type-C) and wireless mode (2.4G).

Under the keyboard, we have a pretty large metal plate that spans almost the entire width of the keyboard. Engraved on the metal plate is the “KiiBOOM” logo and even from the underside, you can see the LED lighting of this device.

On the top right end of the rear, there is the wireless adapter which is held down with a small round magnet. Also on the bottom, we have four rubber anti-skid plastic knobs which hold this device in place. Whether you are dealing with a slippery glass surface, this keyboard will not just slip off your table.

On a plastic table, you can get up to 60-degree inclination and this device will not slide off. On a glass table, you can get up to 45-degree inclination.

The design of this keyboard does not include an adjustable foot. This is because the thickness of the keyboard is such that the upper part (where you have the Function keys) is lower than the lower part (where you have the space bar). The top surface of the keyboard does not sit flat like the bottom surface (both are not parallel), the top surface is at an angle to the bottom surface. This design gives the keyboard a special look but users may need some sort of palm rest to avoid fatigue after using the keyboard for a long time. The fatigue will only happen if the keyboard is higher than your palms. For my palm, it is just perfect so I do not need the palm rest with this keyboard.

Build quality

If there is any concern that people have about unknown brands, it has to be durability. This is a valid concern but not one that users have to worry about in this case. The elegant transparent casing of the KiiBoom Phantom 81 keyboard appears to be made of glass at first glance. However, it is actually made from ultra-clear plastic but a few parts like the volume control knob and a rare plate where the KiiBoom logo is engraved is made of metal.

The feel of this keyboard is very smooth and it is of premium quality. It is actually a surprise that an unpopular brand is producing something this sleek. The aesthetic of transparency is what really draws attention to this. However, it is important to note that the Phantom 81 is not absolutely transparent. The PCB board, switch pad, and plate are opaque. Nevertheless, the casing and each keycap are transparent. To add more elegance to this device, KiiBOOM started creating its own transparent switches, dubbed Crystal Switches. That alone is more than enough to distinguish it from other brands in the market.

The keycaps are KiiBoom custom-designed crystal PBT keycaps that match the look of the keyboard. The keycaps have come with three and five-pin switches but they come with KiiBoom’s custom switches. The keycap is completely transparent such that when you pull one out and place it on a paper, you can read whatever is written on the paper.

The keycaps are not flat as we have on some products in the market. They come with a small central depression, like a scoop, that perfectly fits the fingers. It is also a little bit slippery but during typing, my fingers do not slip off thus I don’t find this as an issue. They are also smooth, and rounded and the font size of letters/numbers is also rounded. The rounded design gives a better feel than something sharp. The prints on the keycap completely flush on the keycaps so you do not feel them when you type. This design reduces fatigue and makes typing seamless.

The keycaps are detachable and can be used with different keycaps because they are removable. But since this keyboard can be hot-swapped, you may also remove the switches and swap them out for your preferred set or another set that has a different feel.

2. Keyboard typing/gaming experience

The typing/gaming experience of the Phantom 81 is also seamless. There are no issues with the reaction time, latency or anything like that for most games for me. Also, this keyboard makes a very soothing click sound when you type. The sound is not very evasive which makes it suitable for any environment. However, please note that you can not use this device in a place that needs absolute quietness like a library or something.

During gaming, hitting the Windows key by mistake can ruin your game. For this reason, gamers seek to disable the Windows key before they start gaming. Well, the KiiBoom Phantom 81 makes a provision for this. Simply hit Fn+Windows Key to disable it. When you do that, the light on the Windows key will be different from all other lights on the keyboard and it will not also blink/flash as other lights indicating that it is disabled.

3. connectivity.

There are three connection modes, wired, USB 2.4GHz, and Bluetooth 5.0 with about 1 milliseconds of latency. This device also comes with another switch to toggle between Mac and Windows. If you are using a Windows device, ensure that this switch is set to Windows. The same goes for Mac.

To connect this device to your notebook, simply slot the Type-C mouth into the keyboard and the Type-A side on the laptop. The laptop will recognize the device and you are good to go. Please note that you may have to wait a few seconds for the connection to be established. For Bluetooth, long press Fn+1 (2 or 3), the Bluetooth indicator light will come on and blink fast. Then search for the “KiiBoom 5.0” or “KiiBoom 3.0” on your device and click on it to establish a connection.

If you want to use the 2.4GHz wireless connection, then long press Fn+4 and inset the 2.4GHz adapter into a compatible port on your device. The system will recognize the keyboard after a few seconds and you are good to go. When not in use, the 2.4GHz adapter is stored under the keyboard.

If there is anything that many people will miss on this device it’s an on/off switch. However, if you have a way to turn off the keyboard, then you shouldn’t miss this switch. To turn off the keyboard, set the switch to select between USB – 2.4GHz – Bluetooth to USB. Then, ensure that the USB Type-C port on the keyboard has no cable connected to it. This way, the keyboard becomes completely inactive.

4. RGB Lightning

When it comes to RGB, my personal description of the KiiBoom Phantom 81 in one word is “KING”. In this regard, this device is as great as you will expect. The keycaps are quite clear and there are not many elements blocking the lights. KiiBOOM also had the genius idea to include south-facing per-key and underneath RGB lighting, which when combined with the keyboard’s transparent design gives it a stunning appearance. However, the keyboard looks just as good without the RGB on as it does with the RGB on.

The RGB lights are not only on the keycaps, there is also a ring of LEDs on the side. So, you can have just the side lights without the keycaps lights, the reverse or both on simultaneously. This depends on your needs. Technically, the “side LEDs” are not on the side of this device. They are actually at the bottom of the motherboard but because of the transparent design, they reflect on the sides.

Thus, the bottom of the motherboard also has beautiful LED lights as you can see in the image below. Please note that if you do not press any key after a few seconds, the RGB light will hibernate. This is another cool feature that helps to save the battery of the keyboard.

There are many shortcuts on the Phantom 81 because it is a small keyboard. The manual that comes with it includes an index for all the shortcuts and how to activate them. This means that even while the RGB lighting on the KiiBoom Driver may be customised, you don’t need to download the software to alter the RGB effect. There are 19 RGB effects but you can also change the brightness, colour, and speed. However, the software also allows you to add layers, modify key sensitivity, and create and assign macros if you wish to further personalise the keyboard.

How to activate some modes

There is also a long list of possible customizations that you can use with these lightnings. It has south-facing LEDs with 19 different colour modes. Well, we will not go into the details of how to customize the LED lightning because it is all contained in the manual. However, most of the lighting effects can be achieved by pressing the Fn + another key on the keyboard. The needed key and what it would achieve are in the manual. For example, Fn + P activates the side light mode.

With Fn+C, you can reduce the speed of the flashing lights while Fn+V increase the speed. Users of Phantom 81 can reduce or increase the intensity of the lights if they feel it is not what they need. If you want the light to stand still, hit Fn+\ and you can change the light mode until it stands still. You can also set these lights to light up only for the keys that you click. However, the light for that key will slowly go off after a few seconds if you do not click it. This is basically my best mode as it gives a truly premium feel.

Rainbow and solid RGB colours

The keyboard has both rainbow colours and solid colours. So, if you do not want the keyboard to display the rainbow colour, you can click Fn+]. One beautiful thing I love about the RGB effects is that even if you change the lighting modes, it still retains other settings. For example, if you change from a single colour to rainbow mode, the lighting intensity and speed do not change until you change them. You can simply turn off/on the RGB with Fn+PageUp. The LEDs support NKRO or anti-ghosting which means that the keyboard can process simultaneous signals and no keystroke is lost.

The KiiBoom Phantom 81 comes with a 4,000mAh battery and the company did not say anything about the performance of the battery. However, in the course of this review, I used this device for a minimum of 5 hours per day for four days and I still have about 60% left. And this is with the RGB lighting on at full brightness.

To check the battery level, simply hold down Fn+Back Space and the lights will appear on the numbers. If the light spans from 1 – 0, then you have 100%. If it gets to 9, 90%, to 8, 80% and so on. In the image below, you can see the green light is from 1 – 6 which means I have about 60% power left. Alternatively, when you connect to your laptop, you will find the keyboard battery level on the Bluetooth connection page on the laptop as shown in he image above.

It is important to note that mechanical keyboards with top-notch features are not cheap. We can consider the KiiBoom Phantom 81 as a mid-range keyboard and it is available for purchase in the US, the UK and Australia for $159, £128, and AU$233.18 . No doubt, it is not cheap for some users but considering what it offers (sleek design, excellent performance, RGB king, hot-swapped feature etc.), this device is worth the price. Therefore, it has a good price-performance ratio. Other similar mechanical keyboards like the CoolKiller CK75 and Lofree 1% cost above $170. Thus, the KiiBoom Phantom 81 is not so expensive.

After the review of this wired/wireless transparent mechanical keyboard, there are a couple of pros/selling points. They include

Premium build quality and sleek feel
Excellent typing experience with very little or no delay. Whether the connection is wired using the USB Type-C cable or wireless using the 2.4GHz adapter or via Bluetooth, there is no noticeable latency.
It can seamlessly connect to different devices whether it is a laptop, large display, mobile phone or tablet.
A rugged gaming companion with a key travel of 3.6mm which is just fine
A software can be used to adjust the key sensitivity and key usage if the user demands more
The linear mechanical crystal switches have a unique feel which does not make the fingers feel any fatigue. Many thanks to its gasket-mounted design that isolates the plate from the keyboard case.
Top-notch typing experience and it is quieter than other mechanical keyboards on the market

Just as this mechanical keyboard has its pros, it also has some cons which we will discuss below

At 1.4kg, this keyboard is heavier than most laptops on the market. So, it is not a device to use on the go. Well, it is a mechanical keyboard and users should expect the weight.
The design is such that one end is thicker than the other. If your wrist is not big enough, you may need a wrist rest to avoid quick fatigue.
The only performance issue on this keyboard is that it takes a few seconds to re-establish a connection with a device that it is paired with but has been on standby. If this was instant, it would have been great.
At $149.99, this mechanical keyboard is at best mid-range and may not be affordable for those on a low budget

The standout feature of this keyboard is the RGB and the design/appearance of the device. There are pretty much no barriers to the RGB light output which makes users easily see it in all its glory. The keyboard has a gasket-mouthed design which will help with the vibrations and it is not so loud but produces a soothing sound. Though the design may require some sort of wrist rest for some users, it is pretty decent overall.

On KiiBoom’s website , I found that the company manufactures a lot of accessories like headphones, monitors, audio cables, deskmats and so on. However, for keyboards, the company has just four including the Phantom 81, Phantom 81 V2, Phantom 86 and Moonshadow 81. If these are all the keyboards that KiiBoom have, then it has done a great job. Having a near-perfect keyboard in just four trials is not an easy feat.
