CASE STUDY: THE NAD CORVETTE CONCEPT7

Nowicki-Autosport-Concept7-2014-2019-C7-Corvette-Stingray

With the introduction of the seventh-generation Chevrolet Corvette in 2013, NAD immediately channeled its design, prototyping and vehicle-build experience into the Concept7 show vehicle, which debuted at the SEMA Show – the automotive aftermarket’s international showcase of design, performance and motorsports accessories.

Wearing a Mobil 1-themed graphics package in recognition of NAD’s longstanding motorsports partner, the reaction was immediate – and the follow-up profound:

  • The Concept7 won two of Chevrolet’s prestigious SEMA Design awards and was touted as one of the most significant new Corvettes at the show in major online and print reports from the SEMA Show
  • Mobil 1 commissioned Nowicki Autosport/Design to build a similarly styled Corvette Concept7 for a national sweepstakes. The car was awarded to the contest winner at the National Corvette Museum in fall 2014
  • The Concept7 was featured on the cover of CORVETTE Magazine (Oct. 2014), as part of a six-page feature story. Another feature story is planned for VETTE Magazine
  • NAD went into production on the exterior components featured on the Concept7 show car. They are offered by several of the industry’s largest Corvette parts and accessories retailers. Product details are available at nowickiautosport.com .

This Rare Corvette GTR Is the Ultimate '90s Fantasy

The Corvette GTR is a rare tuner model sold in extremely low numbers in the 1990s. This one just popped up for sale on eBay. You should buy it.

Headshot of Brian Silvestro

Welcome to You Must Buy , our daily look at the cars you really should be buying instead of that boring commuter sedan.

Specter Werkes was founded by Jeff Nowicki, a car designer who worked for General Motors in the early '90s shaping IMSA race cars. Specter Werkes does contract work for Detroit's major automakers, and sells aftermarket accessories for GM cars. Nowicki's first aftermarket offering was this model, the Corvette GTR, with plenty of new body panels that make the C5 base car look wild. There's a new fascia, pronounced fender vents, long side skirts, and more. The front is made wider by three inches, the rear by six, providing plenty of room for way-wide wheels and tires.

Land vehicle, Vehicle, Car, Sports car, Chevrolet corvette c6 zr1, Wheel, Automotive design, Automotive exterior, Supercar, Coupé,

According to our colleagues at Car and Driver , Specter Werkes offered a stroked LS1 engine making 424 horsepower to go along with the upgraded cosmetics. The car shown here is making a bit more than that. According to the seller, it sports a 383 cubic-inch supercharged engine built by Pruifoy Chevrolet in Colorado. It makes nearly 700 horsepower thanks to forged internals, ported and polished heads, race-spec cams, and methanol injection.

The seller claims this GTR is the third example built, and the sole GTR built from a C5 hardtop rather than a fastback targa. It's up for bidding right now on eBay in Denver, Colorado with an opening bid of $35,000. Better act fast—there's no telling when another one of these will pop up for sale.

The Art of Deception

Thanks to its carefully designed and implemented modifications, this 2003 specter werkes/sports gtr is both wider than it looks and faster than it feels..

Story by Zachary Mayne

Photos by zachary mayne.

Horsetooth Reservoir in Fort Collins, Colorado is a gorgeous place anytime of day. But right now it’s especially picturesque. The spring sun is dropping low over the western horizon, lighting up the scene with a warm Rocky Mountain glow. The ridges that rise dramatically along the reservoir’s edge are reflected in the tranquil surface of the water. Overhead is a bright blue sky with a smattering of slow-moving clouds. However, this beautiful setting is getting some competition in the eye-candy department from a Corvette.

When I catch a glimpse of it, my first thought is, Why does this Corvette look so good? It takes a bit of head scratching until I have a moment of clarity and realize that this 50th Anniversary coupe is much wider than any stock C5. Frequently, cars that have been treated to such an extreme visual makeover can look cartoonish, becoming a caricature of what the original designers had intended, but not this 2003 Specter Werkes/Sports GTR , one of 29 built. The car pulls off the neat trick of looking like something GM’s designers could have envisioned. As it turns out, the man who penned the GTR , Specter Werkes founder Jeff Nowicki, previously worked as a designer and sculptor at GM.

It’s easy to see why Heather and Dave Ambler couldn’t resist buying this Corvette for themselves. More specifically, we can see why Dave bought the car as a 40th birthday present to his wife, to be parked next to his own Corvette, a 40th Anniversary ZR-1. “We’d always wanted a special-edition 50th Anniversary car since getting the 40th Anniversary ZR-1,” explains Dave. The best complement to the ZR-1 would have been a 50th Anniversary edition of the C5 Z06, but Chevrolet never offered such a model. And for the Amblers, a standard 50th Anniversary coupe or convertible just didn’t do the trick.

Photo: The Art of Deception 2

Then they saw this GTR . That fateful day came in September 2010, when the Amblers were picking up their freshly serviced ZR-1 from Purifoy Chevrolet in Denver. “It was ready on a Saturday when the shop was closed,” recalls Dave. “They arranged for the Corvette sales manager to take us into the shop and pick it up.” While they were chatting with the sales manager, the subject of the Specter Werkes/Sports GTR came up, as Purifoy was one of only two dealers that were authorized to sell the car to the public. The entire GTR project was a collaboration between Specter, Purifoy and Cauley Chevrolet in West Bloomfield, Michigan, with the dealers helping to fund the model’s development. It just so happened that a couple of GTRs were on site, and while Heather didn’t like the first car’s searingly bright yellow paint, she was drawn to the other GTR , a recent trade-in, parked in the corner of the warehouse. Though it was covered with a heavy layer of dust, Heather was immediately smitten with the car’s color. When they found out it was the only 50th Anniversary GTR , the Amblers decided to buy to buy it on the spot, trading in their ’96 Collector Edition.

Creating a Specter Werkes/Sports GTR was no simple process. Nearly every body panel was replaced, except for the roof and the rear decklid. Up front, new fenders widened the car by three inches and a more aggressive-looking bumper was fitted. The C5’s standard pop-up headlights were also swapped for a fixed assembly. Nowicki continued the Corvette’s visual transformation by designing new door panels and extremely deep but nicely proportioned side skirts. At the rear, the C5 was widened by a massive six inches—though, as we said at the outset, the added width isn’t immediately obvious. Dave says it’s not until you actually park a GTR next to a standard C5 that the difference becomes starkly apparent.

The standard $33,900 GTR package included only minor interior modifications. The seats were embroidered with the letters “GTR” and a numbered plaque was affixed to the dash. This particular example, however, features a few additional upgrades, including two-tone leather upholstery, a custom VetteEssentials shift knob and a number of Champagne Metallic-painted trim pieces.

Photo: The Art of Deception 3

Included in the GTR package were a number of chassis upgrades. To reduce body roll, larger-diameter Hotchkiss anti-roll bars were fitted front and rear. To increase grip and fill out those massive fender wells, GTRs were shod with ultra-wide wheels and tires: 285/35ZR18 front tires mounted on 10.5 × 18-inch alloys up front, with 345/30ZR19s on 12 × 19-inch rims in the rears. The wheels on the Amblers’ Corvette are HRE alloys, but some GTRs were fitted with Forgeline rims. Like all 50th Anniversary models, this Corvette features Magnetic Selective Ride Control shock absorbers. Purifoy opted to have its brakes upgraded. Specter installed Baer’s Eradispeed Plus system ($1,095), featuring 14-inch rotors and painted-to-match Anniversary Red ($375) calipers.

A GTRs could be configured with engines in a number of different guises. In some cases, the C5’s 350-horsepower LS1 V8 was left alone, though the standard GTR conversion kit included some carbon-fiber engine-bay bling (air-filter lid, fuel-rail covers and fuse-box lid) and a stainless-steel Corsa exhaust system. Additional output came in the form of five engine upgrade packages, as well as the option for custom mods. The top normally aspirated V8, the PowerWerkes Matrix Three, was ostensibly a 7.0-liter race engine; it cranked out over 600 horsepower and cost a whopping $23,895. The 750-bhp PowerWerkes Matrix Three Vortex Supercharger kit cost even more, nearly $30K.

At $9,645 installed, the PowerWerkes Supercharger option offered the most bang for the buck. It included a Magnusson Supercharger, which boosted output by 100 ponies, and required an aggressive-looking Power Dome hood ($1,295) to make room for the top-mounted blower. This is the option that Purifoy selected for its 50th Anniversary coupe, but it had Specter perform a few internal engine mods, as well, including the installation of a Z06-spec LS6 camshaft, ported and polished LS6 cylinder heads and larger (2.02-inch) intake valves. This off-the-menu request cost $4,200. Combined with Specter’s GTR PowerWerkes Headers ($895), these mods swelled the small-block V8’s output to 555 horsepower.

Photo: The Art of Deception 4

All of this work was done at the Specter Werkes/Sports shop in Troy, Michigan. In most cases, untitled Corvettes were sent there directly from the Bowling Green Assembly Plant—GM had given the GTR project its blessing. They were built according to the specifications requested by either Purifoy or Cauley, which then displayed them for sale on their showroom floors.

With the sun dipping low over the horizon and my photos in the bag, I slide into the GTR’s low-slung cockpit to get a feel for it on the road. The blown LS1 comes to life with a subdued rumble. Rev it, and the Corsa exhaust system emits great music—not obnoxiously loud yet extremely powerful. Most of the controls, from the clutch to the steering, are as light and pleasant to use as those in a factory stocker. However, the B&M short-shift kit reduces fore-and aft as well as side-to-side motion considerably over a standard shifter—so much so that it takes a minute to get used to. To be honest, I accidentally drove off in third gear, though I hardly noticed thanks to the engine’s deep well of low-rpm torque.

Dipping into the throttle changes the GTR’s pussy cat-like demeanor at lower speeds into that of a roaring tiger. The resulting acceleration is impressive, but the car doesn’t feel gut-wrenchingly fast. That’s because the torque curve is as flat as can be and there are no spikes in the powerband. The engine revs smoothly and eagerly right up to redline without complaint or a drop-off in power. With the supercharger adding a subtle whistle to the exhaust note, the GTR simply hammers down the road with authority.

Photo: The Art of Deception 5

The car’s handling is commendably neutral. The chassis responds quickly and accurately to steering inputs. There is a hint of body roll on initial turn-in, but the GTR corners confidently, with the front tires gripping obediently and the back following right around. Despite the extra stick afforded by the wide rubber, the stiffer sway bars do make the car feel a bit more tossable than a standard C5, and the Baer brakes slow the car from the triple-digit speeds with ease.

Dave loves the GTR’s performance, but its not his favorite aspect of the car. When pressed about what he likes most, his answer comes without hesitation: “The appearance. Both the interior and exterior are really well done. The Anniversary Red has a great ‘pop’ to it that is nicely complemented by the bodywork. The interior takes the 50th style cues and improves on them to make a beautiful combination of colors.” The Amblers wanted a special 50th Anniversary Corvette and they got it.

Specter Werkes C6 Corvette GTR: Radical Coachbuilt 535 HP Corvette Revealed In Detroit

Yesterday evening we saw the Specter Werkes C6 Corvette GTR make its public debut here at Cauley Ferrari in West Bloomfield, MI. It's rare to have the chance to cover a car from its earliest concept sketches , through the build process and all the way until its public unveiling. But yesterday evening we completed that cycle with the Specter Werkes' special Corvette. The GTR shares only the roof, rear hatch and glass with the exterior of the 2008 Chevy Corvette Z06 upon which it is based and has a footprint widened by four-and-a-half inches. The overall design effect is one of taking the C6 Corvette, mixing it with a touch of Viper RT/10, and adding a liberal dash of kick-in-the-pants.

After the nine-foot-tall leggy models pulled the wraps off the GTR, buyer number one Rollie Purifoy pulled the car into the crush of an enthusiastic crowd, giving us an opportunity to spend a couple of minutes talking to company owner Jeff Nowicki. Understandably, Jeff was pretty happy with the end result of over a year of hard work. And why shouldn't he be? Instead of tacking on styling like most aftermarket niche builders, Jeff and his team took the approach of enhancing the Corvette shape with unique styling elements that have the effect of turning the 'Vette up to eleven.

Though many levels of engine tune are available, this first model is based off the Z06, and snorts out 535 HP with 530 lb-ft of torque breathing through a beautiful-sounding Corsa exhaust. It certainly does sound like an eleven.

Let's be honest here though for a moment — this is a $35,000 custom-built body option. You can drop it onto any C6 version of your choosing, making a car with a price range of $75,000 all the way up to more than $100,000. That's not exactly chicken scratch and certainly not an option Joe Sixpack will be taking, but for those few who know what they want and have the cash to buy it, this is a damn impressive-looking car.

The level of fit and finish points to the fact that this is more than just a rebodied car, and the level of design cohesion drew compliments from even the GM Corvette team members in attendance. It's the little touches — like the relocation of the electric door opener from the trailing edge of the door to the wheel well — that make this one of the most badass aftermarket Corvettes we've ever seen, and we congratulate the team at Specter Werkes for a job well done.

SPECTER WERKES/SPORTS UNVEILS C6 CORVETTE GTR #1 TROY, Mich. - Specter Werkes/Sports unveiled the first C6 Corvette GTR at Cauley Ferrari, in West Bloomfield, Mich. Wearing signature wide bodywork, suspension upgrades and equipped with a Matrix II LS3 V-8 rated at 535 emissions-legal horsepower, it was built for Rollie Purifoy, of Purifoy Chevrolet, in Fort Lupton, Colo. The all-new, C6-based Corvette GTR retains the intrinsic character of the Corvette, augmenting it with appearance, performance and luxury enhancements. It is a distinctive and exclusive sports car with exceptional capability, whether on the street or track. The GTR package is available on all C6 Corvette models, including the base coupe and convertible, the Z06 and ZR1. Orders are being accepted immediately, with product and ordering information available at www.spectergtr.com or 248-583-9559. "We are very proud to launch the C6 Corvette GTR with Rollie Purifoy, from Purifoy Chevrolet, and Jeff Cauley, from Cauley Chevrolet and Cauley Ferrari," said Jeff Nowicki, Specter Werkes/Sports founder. "The new GTR offers enthusiasts everything they're looking for in a sports car - performance, great looks and guaranteed exclusivity." The GTR's expressive, widened bodywork is complemented with the use of exposed carbon fiber details. Standard and optional GTR features include: Unique GTR bodywork, including: *Front fascia, carbon fiber splitter, extractor hood, front fenders, doors, rocker panels, rear fenders, rear fascia, carbon fiber rear diffuser, carbon fiber mirror caps, Cleartastic paint protection, paint and assembly *Custom GTR headlamp bezels with exposed carbon fiber appearance *Unique tail lamps and center high-mounted stop lamp *Michelin Pilot Sport 2 Zero Press tires; 285/30ZR19 (front) and 335/25ZR20 (rear) *Forgeline or HRE wheels; 19-inch in the front and 20-inch in the rear *StopTech ST60 front brakes and ST40 rear brakes *Carbon fiber fuel rail covers and carbon fiber, low-restriction air box *Hotchkis stablilizer bar kit *GTR-embroidered seats and serial-numbered dash plaque *CORSA/Specter stainless steel performance exhaust system *GTR badges The Corvette GTR package carries a base price of $34,995, with a variety of high-performance powertrain options available for additional cost. Custom paint treatment is also available. Each vehicle is hand-built, numbered and fully documented for the customer. Distinctive design Styling that accents the Corvette's design is a hallmark of Specter Werkes/Sports and the C6 GTR takes that philosophy to the next level, with a completely redesigned body. Like the original C5 GTR, the C6 version is based on widened bodywork that supports the larger wheel/tire combination. It also gives the car a more aggressive stance - as do the racing-inspired front and rear fascias. "The GTR's design sharpens and embellishes many of the Corvette's design cues, but doesn't eliminate them," said Nowicki. "It is a design that respects and celebrates the Corvette's design heritage, but builds on it to suit the interest of our customers - enthusiasts who are looking for a unique and exclusive product." At 77 inches, the GTR's bodywork is 4.5 inches wider at the rear fenders (2.25 inches per side) than a regular-production C6 Corvette and 1 inch wider than the Corvette Z06. The physical difference may seem small, but the overall effect, along with a slightly longer overall body length, creates a unique proportion to the GTR that is aggressive and suggests speed even when stationary. Specter Werkes/Sports replaces the front and rear fenders; front and rear fascias; doors, rocker panels and hood - everything except the roof panel and rear hatch - with special, hand-formed GTR panels. Each car is completely repainted and re-assembled with the new bodywork at Specter Werke's Troy, Mich. facility. GTR standard equipment also includes a number of exposed carbon fiber details, including: *Front splitter *Rear diffuser *Outside mirror caps *Headlamp surrounds A bold, LED-lit rear center-mounted stop lamp is integrated in the rear fascia. It was originally designed for the Cadillac CTS, and gives the GTR an unmistakable rear appearance. GTR #1 details C6 Corvette GTR #1 is powered by Specter's emissions-legal Matrix II engine package for the LS3 engine. It is a "stroker" engine package that boosts displacement from 376 cubic inches (6.2L) to 416 cubic inches (6.8L). That is achieved with a Callies 4340-forged crankshaft that delivers a 4.00-inch stroke. Forged rods from Manley and forged pistons from Mahle round out the rotating assembly. The camshaft is a special grind from Comp Cams and the LS3 heads' combustion chambers were enlarged from 71cc to 72cc in order to maintain an 11:1 compression ratio. With stainless steel long tube headers and a low-restriction air intake, the engine is rated at 535 horsepower and 530 lb-ft of torque. The engine also features carbon fiber fuel rail covers and a yellow-painted intake manifold. The Matrix II LS3 channels power to the pavement via Forgeline VR3P wheels, measuring 19 x 11 inches in the front and 20 x 12 inches in the rear. They wrapped with Michelin Pilot Sport 2 Zero Press tires (285/30ZR19, front, and 335/25ZR20, rear). Behind the wheels are StopTech brakes, featuring ST60 six-piston calipers and 15-inch slotted rotors in the front and ST40 four-piston calipers and 14-inch slotted rotors in the rear. The calipers' yellow color contrasts with the HRE wheels' black center sections. The GTR also features Hotchkis adjustable stabilizer bars. On the outside, C6 GTR #1 is painted a gorgeous BASF liquid silver color, the richness of which appears wet to the touch. It is a premium color choice and represents the nearly unlimited paint options available to customers. Inside, GTR-standard embroidered seats and Spinneybeck leather trim details contrast elegantly with the Corvette's black interior. A Specter Werkes/Sports production plaque is mounted on the center console. GTR legacy The Specter Werkes/Sports GTR was first launched a decade ago and saw the creation of nearly 30 specialized cars that were delivered across the country - including the two most notable GTRs, which were created for Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Jr., in 2001. Specter Werkes/Sports is an automotive prototype and fabrication facility based in Troy, Mich. It specializes in race-proven engine performance enhancements and creating specialty accessories for C5 and C6 Corvettes, the Cadillac CTS and more. The company's flagship project is the Corvette GTR. Since its founding in 1990, Specter Werkes/Sports has been recognized internationally for unparalleled achievements of excellence, helping automotive industry leaders design, model, and prototype innovative, top-of-the-line products at competitive pricing. The C6 Chevrolet Corvette is a fun and fast car but for many, it acts as the foundation on which they build more power and more speed. That’s what happened with this Specter Werkes/Sports example from 2008. We wonder just how much you think it’s worth considering all it has and doesn’t have going for it.

To kick things off, this is far more than just a C6 with a body kit. Under the hood is a very custom LS3 V8 stroked to 6.8 liters with a Callies Performance Products 4340-forged crankshaft, Manley forged connecting rods, Mahle forged pistons and other supporting mods. Now defunct Specter Werkes rated this engine at 535 hp (398 kW) and 530 lb-ft (717 Nm) of torque.

That’s a bit more than modern-day Corvette gusto all while remaining naturally aspirated. It sends that power to the rear wheels only via a six-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. According to the listing, it has just 18,000 miles on the odometer. The interior is full of special little bits too.

A badge on the center console reads “Specter Werkes/Sports GTR SWS 08-001-01”. Two-tone leather upholstery is accompanied by four-point racing harnesses, a cross brace between the B-pillars, carbon fiber trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, and cruise control. Now, let’s chat a bit about the body kit because it’s… unique.

The rear features a tasteful and sleek integration of the rear decklid, spoiler, and lighting. A diffuser houses exhaust tips that terminate what starts at the other end with long-tube headers and lead into a Corsa exhaust system.

The door handles are long gone and the side panels now feature a much sharper belt line. Two large vents, one on the front and one on the rear fender appear as well. There’s no information about their functionality though.

For all of the things about this Corvette that we like, it’s far from perfect. Firstly, a close look at the hood and front bumper fitment reveal a few strange panel gaps and misaligned panels. Secondly, one commenter on the auction claims that the owner specifically wrapped it because of “notable issues with the paint.”

That could be incorrect or erroneous but the wrap itself and the weird panels have our spidey sense tingling. So what do you think it’ll go for when the auction ends on April 3rd? As of this writing, it’s been bid up to $25,300 and has five days left on Bring-a-Trailer . At that price, it would present quite a lot of performance per dollar.

Chevrolet Corvette GTR by Specter Werkes/Sports

Wheel, Tire, Automotive design, Land vehicle, Vehicle, Performance car, Car, Rim, Fender, Sports car,

These days, you just can’t build a fast car without carbon fiber; apparently, the guys at Specter Werkes/Sports know that, and they’ve liberally applied the stuff to their Corvette GTR. Chief among the carbon-y items on this wicked Corvette Z06–based machine are the sweet HRE CF40 carbon-fiber wheels, which are wrapped with Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires. Weighing in at only 22 pounds each, the wheels reduce unsprung weight, meaning this beast will have even less trouble breakin’ ’em loose and ripping off one massive burnout.

Of course, the stock 505-hp powertrain is perfectly suited to that task even with the factory wheels, but Specter went all nuts under the hood anyway, adding a twin-turbo LS7 from Lingenfelter Performance. As a result, 800 horsepower rumble under the modified hood. StopTech six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers harness all those ponies when its time to slow down.

How much will it take to own this one-of-one 2008 GTR, being offered on Facebook?

specter werkes

Welcome to another installment of the series where I showcase interesting and cool Corvettes for sale on Facebook. I see numerous listings per day as I try to find compelling Corvettes to bring our dedicated CorvSport readers, but not many pass the sniff test. Today’s 2008 Specter Werkes GTR not only passed the test but this wicked one-of-one Corvette offered by Brian Pruett out of Houston, Texas set the curve on fire.

Quick View:

  • #1 of 1 GTR equipped with the Lingenfelter Supercharger
  • #3 of 7 C6 GTRs completed
  • Dubbed “ America’s Newest Supercar ” by Corvette Fever
  • One of the few GM-approved tuner cars
  • Price just reduced!

As always, the next order of business is the LOL Counter and Reaction Analysis for this listing:

specter werkes

This is our most favorable ratio to date, and the first with ZERO LOLs, so we can definitely stamp this listing as “Facebook Price Police” approved. For context, one of the worst ratios I’ve seen lately had a 72% LOL to Total, and the 2000 hp Z06 in our first installment had a .5% ratio.

Before we get into the details of the listing and the full photo gallery, you’ve got to see how sweet this supercharger looks !

Updated Specter Werkes Corvette GTR delivers 615hp

Ralph Hanson

The addition of a custom cam design with more lift has liberated an extra 80hp (60kW) over the outgoing model, bringing output to a grand total of 615hp (459kW) and 578lb-ft (783Nm) of torque.

The company says many levels of engine tune will be available, but this package is based on a stroked LS3 that sees displacement lifted from 6.2L to 6.8L. The vehicle is also fitted with a Corsa exhaust and gets full widebody treatment, with broadened suspension and a wider covering.

The full bodykit includes exposed carbon fiber details on the exterior, a new front fascia, carbon fiber splitter, extractor hood, front fenders, doors, rocker panels, rear fenders, rear fascia, and a carbon fiber rear diffuser.

Special Forgeline VR3P wheels, measuring 19in up front and 20in in the rear provide ample room for the huge 285/30ZR19 front and 335/25ZR20 rear Michelin Pilot Sport 2 Zero Press tires. Stop Tech 15in slotted brake discs and six pistons up front mate with 14in and four piston calipers in the rear for abundant stopping power, lap after lap. The car is painted in BASF liquid silver color (the same used on Mercedes Benz AMG models), while the interior gets GTR-standard embroidered seats and Spinneybeck leather trim details. Like the last version, the Corvette GTR upgrade carries a base price of $34,995, with more custom work available for a premium.

All GTRs are custom-built to order and carry documentation and identification to that effect. Importantly, the upgrades are available across the Corvette range, including the base Coupe, new Grand Sport, Z06 and even the ZR1.

Moscow-City: 7 surprising facts about the Russian capital’s business center

specter werkes

1. Guinness World Record in highlining

specter werkes

The record was set in 2019 by a team of seven athletes from Russia, Germany, France and Canada. They did it on September 8, on which the ‘Moscow-City Day’ is celebrated. The cord was stretched at the height of 350 m between the ‘OKO’ (“Eye”) and ‘Neva Towers’ skyscrapers. The distance between them is 245 m. The first of the athletes to cross was Friede Kuhne from Germany. The athletes didn't just walk, but also performed some daredevil tricks. Their record is 103 meters higher than the previous one set in Mexico City in December 2016.

2. Domination of Europe's top-10 highest skyscrapers

7 out of 10 Europe’s highest skyscrapers are located in Moscow-City. Earlier, the  ‘Federation Tower’ complex’s ‘Vostok’ (“East”) skyscraper was the considered the tallest in Europe.

Left to right: the lower of the ‘Neva Towers’ (296 m), Commerzbank Tower in Frankfurt (300 m), Gorod Stolits (“City of Capitals”) Moscow tower (302 m), Eurasia tower (309 m), The Shard’ skyscraper in London (310 m), Mercury City Tower (339 m), Neva Towers (345 m).

However, in 2018, the construction of the 462 meter tall ‘Lakhta Center’ in Saint-Petersburg was completed, pushing ‘Vostok’ (374 m) into 2nd place. The 3rd place is taken by OKO’s southern tower (354 m).

3. The unrealized ‘Rossiya’ tower

specter werkes

If all the building plans of Moscow-City were realized, the ‘Lakhta Center’ in St. Petersburg wouldn't have a chance to be Europe's highest skyscraper. Boris Tkhor, the architect who designed the concept of Moscow-City, had planned for the ‘Rossiya’ tower to be the tallest. In his project, it was a 600 meter tall golden cylindrical skyscraper ending with a spire that was inspired by traditional Russian bell towers. Then, the project was reinvented by famous British architect Sir Norman Foster. He had designed ‘Rossiya’ as a pyramid ending with a spire. The skyscraper itself would have been 612 meters tall, and the height including the spire would have reached 744,5 meters (for comparison, the ‘Burj Khalifa’ in Dubai, UAE, would have been just 83,5 meters taller). Unfortunately, the investors faced a lot of economic problems, due to the 2008 financial crisis, so the ‘Rossiya’ skyscraper was never built. A shopping mall and the ‘Neva Towers’ complex was constructed at its place in 2019.

4. Changed appearance of ‘Federation Tower’

specter werkes

In its first project, the ‘Federation Tower’ was designed to resemble a ship with a mast and two sails. The mast was to be represented by a tall glass spire with passages between the towers. It was planned to make a high-speed lift in it. The top of the spire was going to be turned into an observation deck. But the ship lost its mast in the middle of its construction. Experts at the Moscow-city Museum based in the ‘Imperia’ (“Empire”) tower say, that the construction of the spire was stopped, firstly, due to fire safety reasons and secondly, because it posed a threat to helicopter flights – the flickering glass of the spire could potentially blind the pilots. So, the half-built construction was disassembled. However, an observation deck was opened in the ‘Vostok’ tower.

5. Open windows of ‘Federation Tower’

specter werkes

We all know that the windows of the upper floors in different buildings don’t usually open. Experts say that it’s not actually for people’s safety. Falling from a big height is likely to be fatal in any building. The actual reason is the ventilation system. In a skyscraper, it’s managed with a mechanical system, and the building has its own climate. But in the ‘Zapad’ (“West”) tower of the ‘Federation Tower’ complex, the windows can open. The 62nd and last floor of the tower are taken up by a restaurant called ‘Sixty’. There, the windows are equipped with a special hydraulic system. They open for a short period of time accompanied by classical music, so the guests can take breathtaking photos of Moscow.

6. Broken glass units of ‘Federation Tower’

specter werkes

The guests of the ‘Sixty’ restaurant at the top of the ‘Zapad’ tower can be surprised to see cracked glass window panes. It is particularly strange, if we take into consideration the special type of this glass. It is extremely solid and can’t be broken once installed. For example, during experiments people threw all sorts of heavy items at the windows, but the glass wouldn’t break. The broken glass units of ‘Zapad’ were already damaged during shipment . As each of them is curved in its own way to make the tower’s curvature smooth, making a new set of window panes and bringing them to Russia was deemed too expensive . Moreover, the investors had financial problems (again, due to the 2008 financial crisis), so the ‘Vostok’ tower even stood unfinished for several years. Eventually, the cracked window panes were installed in their place.

7. The highest restaurant in Europe

specter werkes

‘Birds’, another restaurant in Moscow-City, is remarkable for its location. It was opened at the end of 2019 on the 84th floor of the ‘OKO’ complex’s southern tower. Guests at the restaurant can enjoy an amazing panoramic view at a height of 336 meters. On January 28, the experts of ‘Kniga Recordov Rossii’ (“Russian Records Book”) declared ‘Birds’ the highest restaurant in Europe, a step toward an application for a Guinness World Record.
