11 incredibly beautiful sacred spaces in Southern California that inspire awe

Here in Southern California, we don’t need opulent churches or glimmering temples to commune with God, the divine or our higher selves.

Watching the rhythmic roll of the ocean might do it. Finding a quiet spot on a hike. Lighting a candle in your bedroom. Noticing a flower blooming in a crack of concrete.

And yet, if you’re like me, you can acknowledge that there’s something special about stepping into a vast and beautiful space built for collective and private worship that causes your heart to swell. It might be the architecture, or the sheer size of the structure. Maybe it’s the resonance of all those collective prayers. Maybe it’s the deep hush. The dim lights.

Planning your weekend?

Stay up to date on the best things to do, see and eat in L.A .

Listed here are some of the sacred spaces I’ve visited in and around Los Angeles that made me say “Wow,” over and over again.

Many of the buildings had some extremely wealthy donors. It takes serious money to build monumental spaces that convey the permanence of the divine. Sometimes that money can be assembled through many small donations, but having congregants with deep pockets helps.

Visitors of all faiths and no faiths are warmly welcomed at every place mentioned below, and questions are encouraged.

A final note: This is not an exhaustive list and it does not include all of the region’s many different religions. Treat this guide as a first step into this awe-inspiring world and a small slice of what’s out there. If you have a suggestion for a missing location, email me at debora[email protected] and it may be included in future coverage.

In secular Japan, what draws so many to temples and shrines? Stamp collecting and tradition

TOKYO — Almost weekly Momo Nomura makes time to visit Shinto shrines . She performs the prescribed rituals — cleansing her hands, ringing a bell, bowing and clapping. But her main purpose is getting a Goshuin, a stamp with elegant calligraphy that shrines provide for a fee to certify the visit.

She loves the stamps, which she began collecting during the pandemic . One with blue hydrangeas got her started.

“Because of the Goshuin, shrines have become closer to me, but I don’t consider this a religious activity,” Nomura said after getting her stamp and taking selfies at Sakura Jingu, a western Tokyo shrine established in 1882 as a minority Shinto sect focused on traditional values.

Nomura, who posts about her hobby on social media as Goshuin Girl, says she enjoys the stamp designs, and shrine visits allow a moment of reflection and a change of pace from her busy life as a graphic designer and entrepreneur. Differences of religious sects are not an issue, she says.

“It’s a mindfulness kind of thing for me,” Nomura said. “I don’t consider myself religious.”

About 70% of people in Japan have similar nonreligious feelings, according to surveys. Their responses reflect a long history of pragmatism about traditional religions, which often serve more as connections to family and community than as theological guides, as in the West.

Nomura, who graduated from a Christian university in Tokyo, says her parents also are not religious. Still, she vaguely remembers going to shrines with her family as a girl for Shichi-Go-San ceremonies, where parents pray for health and prosperity for their children. She also visited a shrine dedicated to the god of education before college exams.

On a recent weekend at Onoterusaki Jinja, a 9th century Tokyo shrine that is part of a broader Shinto history, people came and went, some praying or just sitting on benches. Masami Takeda brought her 6-year-old grandson, and they picked up a stamp with autumn leaves. “I never think I visit religious sites,” Takeda says. “But I now pray for my grandson’s health.”

Japan’s unique relationship to faith is on full display during the final week of the year: People celebrate Christmas with an exchange of presents, ring Buddhist temple bells on New Year’s Eve, and hours later go to Shinto shrines to celebrate the New Year. During other seasons, Japanese flock to Buddhist Bon dances and Shinto-related festivals involving “mikoshi,” or portable shrines.

“In Japan, faith is not considered an important element of religion, unlike Christianity or Islam, in which understanding of the Bible or the Quran is necessary and the theology serves as a guidepost for daily life,” says Ryosuke Okamoto, a religion professor at Hokkaido University.

Historically, Buddhism arrived in Japan in the 6th century and took root. From around 1640, as part of a push to ban Christianity, temples kept family registries of people in the neighborhood, creating a tradition of ancestor worship still observed today. A majority of Japanese return to their hometowns during August’s Bon holiday week to spend time with relatives and visit ancestors’ graves. Most funerals in Japan are held in a Buddhist style.

Japan’s Indigenous religion of Shinto is largely rooted in animism, which believes there are thousands of “kami,” or spirits, inhabiting nature. It’s closely linked to the country’s imperial family: Around 1870, Japan made Shinto the state religion and used imperial worship to fan ultra-nationalism and support for World War II, which was fought in the name of the emperor. Japan’s U.S.-drafted postwar constitution ensures freedom of religion and the separation of religion and state, though the conservative government today still places great importance on imperial worshipping.

“Younger people tend to have an even more pragmatic view and less interest in principles linked to religion,” Okamoto said.

According to Cultural Affairs Agency statistics for 2022, the number of Japanese with links to Shinto, Buddhism, Christianity or other religions totaled 180 million, which exceeds Japan’s population of 126 million. This suggests that most people follow both Shinto and Buddhism. Christians account for about 1% of that total.

Many Japanese are especially cautious about new religions, an impact of the 1995 deadly sarin attack led by the Aum Shinrikyo cult that shocked the nation and ruined the image of new religious sects.

Allegations of fraudulent business practices by the Unification Church and its decades-long political ties with the Japanese governing party surfaced in the investigations of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s assassination last year, adding to the public’s weariness about nontraditional religion. The alleged assassin told police he killed Abe because of the politician’s links to the Unification Church — which the murder suspect hated because his mother’s large donations to the group bankrupted his family.

According to a survey of Japanese by the Niwano Peace Foundation in 2019, most respondents said they haven’t participated in any religious activities in recent years, and more than 70% said they don’t have any faith. However, positive feelings about shrines and temples increased over the past 20 years, presumably because of a growing interest in spiritual tours and stamp collections, the survey shows.

The popularity of Goshuin stamps and visits to spiritual spots like shrines and temples is not a show of faith, experts say, but instead suggests people feel an affinity for the traditions without a need to be deeply involved. Some compare the stamp collecting to a blessed version of baseball cards.

Onoterusaki priest Karin Kodashima says the stamps are increasingly popular, allowing visitors to “tie a connection with gods.” The stamps can also be an introduction to Shinto, she says during her break from preparation for an upcoming autumn festival which features rituals, lectures and court music.

For many people, shrines offer a chance for reflection, even if it’s not a religious experience. Kodashima says, “I believe shrines will continue to be part of people’s daily lives and serve as a place of tranquility and peace.”

Some Buddhist temples, including Tsukiji Hongwanji and Komyoji in Tokyo, are seeking to reach younger people and have opened cafes, yoga and meditation classes, as well as talk sessions and concerts.

A Komyoji monk, Yuken Kihara, serves his homemade desserts, tea and coffee every Wednesday at Open Terrace café on a temple balcony, available to anyone with reservations.

“I hope to provide a space for people to drop by and relax,” Kihara said. “Japanese people are seen as secular, but I think it’s a value that you cannot answer just by yes or no.”

As Japan’s population increasingly ages, with family values becoming more diverse and younger generations moving to cities, small shrines and temples in rural Japan struggle to survive, with many on the verge of closing.

In an attempt to connect the struggling shrines and temples with potential visitors interested in history, architecture or the stamps, a young entrepreneur established an online information site. There are about 160,000 temples and shrines in Japan, according to government statistics.

“Hotokami,” a word combining Hotoke (Buddha) and Kami (God), was launched by Ryo Yoshida in 2016 after he organized tours to historic sites for three years.

The online service now has 1.2 million monthly users, and has collaborated with train operators, including those in Yokohama and Osaka, as well as shrines in the area, to organize trips to collect stamps.

Yoshida says he personally feels a connection to both Buddhism and Shintoism. Every morning for 10 minutes he listens to a YouTube program by a monk based at a temple in Kamakura. As far as his family’s religion, he notes a Buddhist temple next to his grandfather’s home in Shiga prefecture.

Yoshida says, “I like both Shinto’s appreciation of nature and ancestors, and Buddhist values of how to live a better life.” But he adds, “If you ask me whether I have faith, I’m not sure.”

Spiritual Odyssey: Marina Abramović ‘s Journey in ‘The Spirits of Maritime Crossing’

spirits of the shrine

The otherwise mesmerizing town of Venice becomes horribly distorted and hazy as Marina Abramović stumbles through, her entire surroundings thrown into tumultuous chaos as her soul begins to depart her body. In her final moments, Marina’s mind is consumed by confusion, desperately searching for an unanswered question that will bring her eternal peace. Overwhelmed by a grievous desire for truth, Marina’s spirit embarks on an afterlife journey to Thailand, a land renowned for its spiritual pursuit.

“The Spirits of Maritime Crossing,” which premiered at Switzerland’s St. Moritz Art Film Festival last month marks Professor Apinan Poshyananda’s directorial debut. The inspiration was sparked by his experience of travelling to Rome to present the Phra Malai Scripture to the Vatican. “The idea has stuck with me since its conception in Rome, and over the years, I have pondered and contemplated it,” recalls the artistic director of the Bangkok Art Biennale. However, the project only came to fruition when BAB hosted the “Chaos and Calm” exhibitions earlier this year, providing ideal opportunities for the footage to be set among highly acclaimed installations, including the late artist Montien Boonma’s sculptures.

Although Marina has never before ventured into acting, she accepted the role with alacrity when approached by her long-time friend, Prof. Apinan. Her commanding presence in the movie makes the audience feel as though they are witnessing her live performance. With her deep fascination for spiritual transcendence, the iconic artist truly becomes the embodiment of a drifting apparition perpetually seeking equilibrium in the mind.

After departing the physical world, Marina’s wandering soul finds itself in Bangkok, accompanied by an endearing young money (played by Mona Khunchun) who guides her through the city of angels.

spirits of the shrine

“The little monkey is but a reflection of Marina herself—a shadow of her troubled and inquisitive mind ensnared by delusions,” remarks Pichet Klunchun, the esteemed contemporary Thai dancer who portrays the chieftain of the monkeys. His enduring confrontation with Marina echoes the cornerstone of her performance art which explores the mental and physical boundaries of the human body.

Meandering from one place to another, from revered Indian shrine to the holy Buddhist temple, and from the immaculate tattoo parlour to the once-regal but now dilapidated trading outpost, her journey finally leads her to Wat Pho. The serene ambience of the sacred temple’s courtyard sets the stage for the ultimate revelation as she walks past Anthony Gormley’s captivating artwork “Contain” (2022) which symbolizes impermanence and mindfulness. More conspicuously, Marina’s immersion into Montien‘s masterpiece, “Arokhayasala”(1994) gives off a potent yet soothing energy that appears to alleviate the sufferings of all sentient beings.

Prof. Apinan’s deliberate choice of landscapes, juxtaposing Venice and Bangkok, serves to underscore the poignant yet provocative memories of bygone eras when these maritime trading hubs fueled the insatiable greed of mankind. “Unless we find an exit, we are repeatedly trapped in an endless cycle,” notes Pichet, emphasizing the eternal quest for liberation.

Perhaps Marina’s odyssey between these parallel worlds is poised to inspire countless restless minds to embark on their own spiritual journeys.

“The Spirits of Maritime Crossing” will grace the screen at House Samyan in November.

Kena Bridge Of Spirits is an action-adventure game developed by Ember Lab. To save Taro you need to find all the memories scattered around the map. One of the memories lies in the Forgotten forest where you need to go to meet Rusu. Below you will find a complete walkthrough on how to enter the forgotten forest, how to destroy the corruption of all four shrines, how to defeat sprout captain?

Kena Bridge Of Sprits How To Enter Forgotten Forest To Meet Rusu

Once you reach the entrance of the forgotten forest, you need to light up the crystal to open the door. There will be two crystals on top of the door, and one of them on the left top side on the trunk of the tree. You need to first hit the crystal that is on the left side, which will light up the left side crystal of the door. Then you need to hit the left side crystal with the arrow which will light up the right side crystal. Finally hit the right side crystal to open the door.

Kena Bridge Of Spirit Restore All Shrines

Restore wood shrine.

To restore the wood shrine, you need to clear out all the enemies. Once they are cleared, the corruption on the flower will be exposed.

Restore Water Shrine

To restore the water shrine, you need to use rots to pick two reflecting stones and place them on the marked area in front of the flower corruption, then head to the middle marked area and use light pulse to light up both the crystal and restore the shrine.

Restore Fishing Shrine

This shrine can be a bit tricky to figure out. Once you stand facing the corruption flower you will find four pillars on the Northeast, northwest, southeast, and southwest side. Then you need to look at the candle place in front of the flower.

Based on the candle you need to hit the pillars in that particular order. Northeast pillar will be the first, southwest pillar second, northwest is third, and finally the southeast pillar. Hit the crystal part of the pillar with your bow to light them up.

Restore God Tree Shrine

To reach the God Tree shrine, you need to use the bow on the flower that pulls you towards it. Then keep going on the platform and you need to double jump to reach the upper platform. Turn back and look up to find another platform on top of you. Keep following that path to reach the God Tree shrine.

Kena: Bridge Of Spirits How To Defeat Sprout Captain

If you are playing any difficulty except the story mode, defeating the sprout captain can be a bit tough. The recommend ability that you can unlock before fighting will be the slowing time while using bow, and infuse rot power to your arrow. Using this technique you can deal heavy damage and make sure your rot level will be 2 so that you can use two power shot consecutively.

After that you just need to dodge and let the rots regain courage to again charge and attack the power shot. The sprout captain will be quite agile so make sure to slow time else the power shot can be wasted. Do not try to fully block his attacks, because his consecutive attack will break your shield and deal damage if you haven’t upgraded the shield ability.

How to clean the woods shrine, how to clean the water shrine, how to clean the god tree shrine, how to clean the fishing shrine, boss fight: sprout captain, boss fight: mage, taro's regret: how to clean the lantern cave, boss fight: shrine guardian, boss fight: corrupt taro.

Forgotten Forest1.jpg

When you’re ready to explore the Forgotten Forest and meet Rusu there (you can’t visit it before Rusu tells you to), head to where we are on the map below:

Taro's Tree17.jpg

Once there, you’ll see a sealed stone door and you should see four blue crystals above it (one of them is on the tree to the left). You can see all of them in our screenshot below. Shoot the one farthest to the left, then the one on its right, then the far right one, and then the one above the door and it will open.

Taro's Tree16.jpg

Head inside to officially enter the Forgotten Forest . Rusu will explain that Taro’s spirit has corrupted the shrines and sealed the entrance to the Guardian Tree. Rusu marks the shrine locations on your map and you need to clean each of them.

Let’s tackle each of those. We’ll be sure to include how-tos for finding each collectible in the areas near the shrines as well.

Right by Rusu is a Fox statue. Stand it up with your Rot to gain some Karma. After that, take the path to the right of Rusu. Follow the path around until you hit a combat encounter. You need to defeat enough enemies to gain the Courage needed to destroy the corrupted flower bulb on the tree up above.

Forgotten Forest2.jpg

This will clean up the area. Congrats! You’ve cleaned up the Woods Shrine! Let’s pick up some collectibles here.

Forgotten Forest3.jpg

Right by Rusu at the Woods Shrine, you should see some large trees overlooking the river area. Look for one with a purple insignia on it. Jump over to it and use a Pulse while standing on the purple insignia. This will launch four targets into the air. Shoot all four before they fall down to unveil a Rot for you to collect.

Forgotten Forest4.jpg

Now head back to Rusu and run past him, down the tree we walked across earlier. You should hear and see a waterfall. Walk through the waterfall to find a chest. Open the chest to get the Purple Mushroom Rot Hat .

Forgotten Forest5.jpg

Now, jump down from this waterfall cliff and go right. Just a few steps over, you should see a cliff you can climb. Climb up it to discover a Hat Cart. Doing so will unlock the Acorn Rot Hat .

Now, drop down from this cliff and head right some more. When you see more running water, follow it backwards until you enter a small cavern. You should see a pinkish-purple shrine. Use Pulse in front of it to unveil a Rot for you to collect.

Forgotten Forest6.jpg

Now, from here, walk out toward the river basin until you see a circle platform. Use Pulse on it and three large stone platforms will rise out of the water. Jump to the middle one and look to the right. You should see what we see below:

Forgotten Forest7.jpg

Cursed Chest 1

Shoot the blue crystal and the platform you’re on will rise. Double jump to the ledge where this blue crystal was and you’ll find a Cursed Chest . You must defeat 6 flying enemies to complete this Cursed Chest challenge. Open the chest to get a bunch of currency after that.

Forgotten Forest8.jpg

Meditation Spot 1

Now, head toward the Water Shrine but when you get there, ignore it. Look for some broken stairs. Go up them and follow the path across until you reach where we are below:

Forgotten Forest10.jpg

You’ll see some water. Follow it. Eventually, you’ll be able to climb up a small rock. From this rock, shoot the blue crystal across the way, as pictured below:

Forgotten Forest11.jpg

Jump from stone to stone to reach the other side and follow this path until you reach a Meditation Spot .

Forgotten Forest12.jpg

Now, just to the right of this Meditation Spot is a Rot for you to collect so make sure you do that before leaving this area.

Forgotten Forest13.jpg

After this, look at your map and head toward the Taro’s Love marking. This is the Guardian Tree. You cannot enter it until all four shrines have been cleaned. We’ll get to that but first, let’s find a hat. Along the way, you should see an Owl Statue. Have your Rot carry it to one of the three glowing owl pedestals pictured below:

Forgotten Forest14.jpg

You must place all three owl statues on these pedestals to advance. Walk past Rusu and toward the path leading away from the Guardian Tree and beside a fallen tree, you’ll find the second Owl statue.

Forgotten Forest15.jpg

The third owl statue can be found by following the path directly in front of Rusu. It’ll be laying on the edge of a cliff, as pictured below:

Forgotten Forest16.jpg

Bring this owl statue back and once all three are placed on the three pedestals, you’ll unlock the Deer Rot Hat . Ok, with that done, let’s tackle the Water Shrine.

Unlike other corruption sites we’ve cleaned thus far, there are no enemies to defeat at the Water Shrine. Instead, there’s a small puzzle. When you arrive, you’ll see what we see below. Your main objective is to light all of the blue crystals here so that the corrupted bulb opens up. You do that by unleashing a Pulse on the circle platform our Kena is on.

However, you’ll find doing that right from the jump does nothing. Instead, you need to cross the small waterway and find the two blue bulb-like rocks on the ground. There’s one to the left of the shrine and one to the right. Move each to the small tri-tipped stone markings on the ground and place them in the center of the three stones. You can see what that looks like below:

Forgotten Forest18.jpg

After that, head back to the circle platform and use Pulse. This will open up the corrupted bulb. Now, sic some Rot onto it and shoot the bulb to clean the Water Shrine.

Flower Shrine 1

This will unveil a Forest Tear right at the shrine. Use this tear to get a Rot Cloud and bring it back to the stone stairs from earlier. You should see some corruption on the ground behind the stairs. Use the cloud to destroy that corruption. This frees up a large stone platform that your Rot can move. Move it to the edge pictured below:

Forgotten Forest19.jpg

This allows you to climb up top. Do so and then have your Rot move the wood. This makes this area easier to access later. Now, follow this path around to find a Flower Shrine . However, you’ll see that it’s covered in corruption. Go use the Forest Tear from earlier to get a Rot Cloud and take this Rot Cloud to the forest shrine (moving the wood from earlier makes this much easier). Interact with it to get some currency.

Forgotten Forest20.jpg

Nearby, you’ll see a large pile of leaves with purple butterflies floating above it. There’s a Rot here and to get it, you need to bring a rot cloud over to it and slam the rot cloud down on the leaves.

Forgotten Forest53.jpg

This reveals the rot beneath it.

Spirit Mail 1

While facing the pile of leaves, turn around — you should see a flower on a tree.

E 0dFzvVcAM4Dka.jpeg

Shoot your bow at it and you'll whip to it. Quickly turn and aim at a second flower beside it and then once there, quickly aim and shoot a third flower (pictured below) to reach the area where this Spirit Mail can be found.

E 0dFL-VgAgCPBV.jpeg

You'll find the Spirit Mail sitting on a tree stump.

E 0dEwkVUAImsQG.jpeg

Now, let’s head to where we are on the map below:

Forgotten Forest22.jpg

When you arrive, you’ll find that it’s a treehouse of sorts. Run around it and look for the flower pictured below.

Forgotten Forest21.jpeg

Shoot it to be whipped up onto the treehouse’s platform and begin your trek up. When you reach a large circle platform, shoot the three purple fruits down and let your Rot eat them.

Spirit Mail 2

After this, head back around the circle until you reach this platform pictured below:

Forgotten Forest23.jpg

Look across the way to the left and shoot the blue flower to be whipped over to that treehouse. Follow its ledges to a dead end and you’ll find the Spirit Mail pictured below:

Forgotten Forest24.jpg

After this, return to the first tree and go back to the platform where the purple fruit were found. Look across and you’ll see a blue flower on a tree with a horizontal elevator attached to it. Shoot this flower to whip over to that tree.

Forgotten Forest25.jpg

Follow this tree’s platforms around and you’ll discover the God Tree Shrine. Prepare for a fight. This fight will be a bit tricky. There are three purple-eyed monkeys that shoot purple shards at you. These shards hurt and their massive explosion after landing hurt as well. Dodge out of the way of these.

Take them out by using the blue flowers near them to whip to their position and attack via melee or ranged until they go down. Take out all three and defeat all of the other enemies in the area. Be sure to go from flower to flower to keep the enemies on their toes. After that, sic some Rot onto the corrupted bulb and then shoot it with a spirit arrow to clean the God Tree Shrine.

Forgotten Forest26.jpg

After this, look above Rusu (while standing by his at the God Tree Shrine) and you should see a blue flower. Shoot up to it and follow the path around until you reach where we are below. Use Pulse to unveil a Rot .

Forgotten Forest27.jpg

Flower Shrine 2

After this, backtrack until you see a gap to a different platform on this part of the tree we haven’t yet been to. Jump across the gap and you’ll see the bucket of blue goop pictured below:

Forgotten Forest28.jpg

Have your Rot hit the bucket over and blue goop will fall out and down to the platform below. Drop down and have your Rot carry it around the circular platform to the Forest Tear pictured below. Use this tear and then take a Rot Cloud down the elevator (shoot the blue crystal to make the elevator go down) and then use this cloud to purify the Flower Shrine at the base of the elevator.

Forgotten Forest29.jpg

Slide down the path to the right of the Flower Shrine and then take a left once down there. Follow the path and keep an eye on the things hanging above you. You’re looking for the purple lantern hanging pictured below. Shoot it to unveil a Rot for you to collect.

Forgotten Forest30.jpg

After this, return to the large piece of wood where we shot those four targets from earlier. Look across the way and you should see the blue flower pictured below.

Forgotten Forest31.jpg

Shoot over to it and open the chest beneath it to get the Sibling’s Mask Rot Hat . Now, let’s go clean the Fishing Shrine.

When you arrive to the Fishing Shrine, we recommend standing right in front of it. Look to the left of it and you should see a stone pillar with a blue crystal in it. Shoot it. Then, look for that same pillar to the right of the shrine. From where you’re standing, there are two behind you — one on your back right and one on your back left.

Forgotten Forest32.jpg

Shoot all four of these quickly and two flying enemies will attack. Take them out. You’ll find that if you keep doing this, the same thing happens over and over. Take a closer look at the Shrine. Do you see the four stacks of candles? These candles are your guide to solving this puzzle.

Forgotten Forest33.jpg

Each candle corresponds to a pillar. The back left pillar corresponds to the two candle set, the front left pillar corresponds to the four candle set, the front right pillar corresponds to the single candle set, and the back right pillar corresponds to the three candle set. In order to solve the puzzle, you must light the candles up in a 1, 2, 3, 4 formation. In order to do this, you must shoot the pillars in the following order: front right pillar, back left pillar, back right pillar, front left pillar.

Upon doing this, the corrupted bulb will open up. Sic some Rot onto it and shoot the bulb with an arrow to clean the Fishing Shrine. Now, we’re free to head to the Guardian Tree, but first, let’s pick up some collectibles .

Cursed Chest 2

Forgotten Forest35.jpg

If you’re facing the Fishing Shrine, look right. Follow that path. When you reach where we are on the map below, you’ll find a Cursed Chest .

You must defeat all five enemies that spawn in 30 seconds to complete this Cursed Chest Challenge. Open the chest to get the Taro Rot Hat. There’s another Rot in this area but it’s currently inaccessible so we’ll come back for it later.

For now, head to the Guardian Tree.

After cleaning all four Forgotten Forest shrines, head to the Guardian Tree (it’s marked yellow on your map) and stand on the circle platform in front of it. Use a Pulse and prepare for a boss fight.

Forgotten Forest36.jpg

The Sprout Captain is extremely aggressive. They’ll immediately sprint at you and unleash a two-swipe combo. You can either parry this combo or dodge out of the way. If you’re good at parrying, we highly recommend unlocking the Parry Counter upgrade. This way, when you parry, you can quickly tap R1 to perform a powerful spinning attack that does some pretty decent damage against the Sprout Captain .

Forgotten Forest37.jpg

Often, the Sprout Captain will follow up its two-swipe combo with a lunge attack. If you parry the two-swipe combo, you likely don’t need to worry about this follow-up lunge attack, but if you dodge away, the Sprout Captain will perform a lunge attack right at you so prepare to either jump away from it, parry the attack, or dodge away. We recommend dodging away when the Sprout Captain lunges.

Forgotten Forest38.jpg

The Sprout Captain will also sometimes use a powerful three-move attack. It’s easy to read but it can kill you if all three hits land. Basically, the captain will swipe left with its sword, then right, and then left again or vice versa. You should really try to parry the first swipe to end the move and open up the Sprout Captain for some easy damage.

Another thing to do, and if you’re quick you can do this right when the Sprout Captain first appears, is shoot the yellow diamond on the Sprout Captain’s body. This will immediately take off a fourth of the Sprout Captain’s health.

Forgotten Forest39.jpg

Attack the enemy, use your arrows, and be wary of their attacks and eventually, the Sprout Captain will go down.

When the Sprout Captain is defeated, head into the tree, sic some Rot onto the corrupted bulb and shoot the blue bulb to clean the Guardian Tree. A cutscene will immediately begin.

Forgotten Forest40.jpg

Rot 7, 8, and 9

You’ll receive the Food Offering Relic after this cutscene. You’ll immediately receive three Rot after receiving this Relic too.

Forgotten Forest41.jpg

After this, head to the new blue marking on your map. It’s the entrance to the Lantern cave. Prepare for a boss fight against a Mage to begin the second you arrive.

Forgotten Forest42.jpg

The Mage is a very interesting fight and that’s because it’s unlike any fight in the game thus far. For starters, this is the first Mage Kena’s ever fought in this game and secondly, it has a unique moveset that keeps you on your toes.

When the fight begins, the Mage will use an area-of-effect move that sees the Mage hit the ground. Red particles lift up and then three to four enemies appear. It is imperative you take out these enemies immediately because they can quickly overrun you. However, doing so will not be easy. That’s because while fighting these enemies, the Mage will be launching large red balls at you.

Forgotten Forest43.jpg

These balls chase you and they chase for quite a while. When they hit, they knock Kena back a couple of feet and do a lot of damage. We do not recommend dodging away. By the time the dodge animation is over, the ball will be caught up and likely hit you. Instead, run away from it.

Once you’re super comfortable with it, run in such a way that the red ball collides with the Mage’s minions. It will actually destroy the minions. You can also run it into the Mage but this won’t do any damage. That’s the main move to look out for the, but the Mage also has their own standard melee attacks so be sure to dodge or parry those. If you see the Mage lift a green ball into the air, it’s about to heal.

Forgotten Forest44.jpg

You absolutely must interrupt this healing move with an attack of your own. A bow shot will do the trick if you’re far away. If the Mage is able to heal, they can heal up at least half of their health if not more. During all of this, get your bow shots and melee hits in to damage the Mage. The Rot Hammer in particular does a ton of damage. You can also shoot the red diamond on the Mage’s back to take out nearly half of its health but actually hitting that is very tough. You need the Focus upgrade for the Spirit Bow, really. That’s because it slows down time.

Get behind the Mage and slow down time to shoot the diamond. Without slowing down time, the Mage will likely just turn around to face you. After a good set of hits, Rot Hammer hits, and spirit bow hits, the Mage went down. After this, talk to Rusu and a cutscene will begin. It’s time to enter the Lantern Cave.

When you first enter the Lantern Cave, you’ll find that it’s not actually a cave...yet. For now, it’s just a grassy field. Head forward.

Forgotten Forest45.jpg

When you first enter, head to the path on the right and follow it to some stones on the ground. You’ll find a Rot under the stone furthest on the right.

After this, head left and you’ll find a crate with some currency. You’ll also see some lanterns hanging. Use Pulse to get some currency from them. Right by those lanterns is the way forward — you need to climb up the cliffs seen in the screenshot below:

Forgotten Forest46.jpg

Up top, follow the path to the left. You’ll find some old camping gear marked with a fox symbol. It’s some remnants of Taro. Interact with the gear and Taro’s spirit will jump out. Follow it. When you reach some corruption, sic some Rot to the corrupted bulb and then, when it’s glowing blue, shoot the bulb. This destroys the corruption.

When you reach the crossroads pictured below, head left first. There are some collectibles to the right, but you must complete more of the golden path first.

Forgotten Forest47.jpg

When you go left, you’ll stumble upon a Taro Memory. Equip your Taro Spirit Mask to view the memory.

After this, head to the right and you should see the spawn area of a Forest Tear. Look up and to the left. You’ll see a glowing blue crystal on a tree.

Forgotten Forest48.jpg

Shoot it and then shoot the blue crystal to the right. Shoot the third blue crystal even further to the right after that. This will drop a blue tear and your Rot can carry it to the Forest Tear. Now you can use a Rot Cloud to clear all of the corruption in this area.

Meditation Spot 2

First, you should go to the left with the cloud to clear some corruption. This will open up a pathway that leads to a Meditation Spot . Meditate here to gain a permanent health increase.

Forgotten Forest49.jpg

Now, grab another Rot Cloud and clear all of the corruption directly in front of the Forest Tear. Deeper down this path, you’ll see another Forest Tear spawn point. Behind it is a blue crystal.

Forgotten Forest50.jpg

Shoot it to spawn a Forest Tear. Now, create another Rot Cloud and further clear the corruption along this path.

You’ll reach some enemies eventually. Take them out and a corruption bulb will reveal itself. Sic some Rot onto it and then shoot it to clean the area.

Flower Shrine 3

Forgotten Forest51.jpg

Go back and grab a Rot Cloud again and clean the last remaining bit of corruption. It leads directly into a tunnel and on the other side is a Flower Shrine covered in corruption. Destroy the corruption with a cloud and interact with the shrine to get some currency.

After that, return to the Forest Tear and use a rot cloud to slam the piles of leaves next to it. This will reveal a Rot for you to collect.

Forgotten Forest52.jpg

After this, return to where the corrupted bulb from earlier was and drop down. You’ll slide to a new area below. When you reach the bottom, continue forward until you see a circle platform with a blue crystal on it. Use Pulse on this crystal to open the doors. Time for a boss fight.

Forgotten Forest54.jpg

The Shrine Guardian is quite a fun fight. That’s because the Shrine Guardian has a lot of fun moves. When the fight begins, the guardian will summon a healthy handful of minions — like at least 5. We recommend taking these out immediately as it only takes a couple to overrun you, not to mention the actual boss will be attacking still as well.

When you defeat all of the minions, you’ll get about 30 seconds of the fight to take the Shrine Guardian on alone before they summon more minions so make good use of time during those 30 seconds. We highly recommend using the Spirit Bow’s Focus ability, which slows down time while aiming in with the bow for a few seconds, to target the yellow diamonds on the Shrine Guardian’s body.

Forgotten Forest56.jpg

There are three in total and each takes out about a fourth of the boss’ health. The moves to watch out for from the Shrine Guardians are actually quite simple and they have big tells. If the boss rears back, it’s about to do a big slash-like attack. Dodge backwards to avoid this attack as it sweeps left to right and vice versa. Another move to watch out for is a standard attack — it’s basically a small spin attack and it’s the move the Shrine Guardian will use most often.

Forgotten Forest58.jpg

Occasionally, the boss will charge up and launch into the air. When it does that, run — it’s about to do a big ground pound attack. Not only does a direct hit of this move do massive damage, but the pound forces a yellow circle to shoot outward across the ground and this circle does area-of-effect damage. Be sure to run away from this move.

One of the Shrine Guardian’s favorite moves is a strange pink tendril attack. It’s tough to read when this will happen, but if it looks like they’re about to dig their arm into the ground, get ready to run. That’s because large pink tendrils will shoot out of the ground. They hurt and so do their area-of-effects. Also they explode, so that’s fun.

Forgotten Forest57.jpg

If you get too close to the Shrine Guardian for too long (looking at you, heavy melee users), the Shrine Guardian will pound their foot down. This move does area-of-effect damage so be sure to dodge backward to avoid it when it happens.

Look at the boss’ health bar. Notice how it has two yellow orbs beside it? That’s because this is a multi-phased fight. Fortunately, the phases aren’t all that different. Every time one of the Shrine Guardians’ yellow orbs is depleted, it will unleash a massive AOE attack so be sure to run away from it when that happens.

Forgotten Forest59.jpg

After you take down the Shrine Guardian, a cutscene will begin.

Rot 12, 13, and 14

Following this cutscene, you’ll automatically receive Three Rot . Then, it’ll be time to free Taro using the Relics.

Forgotten Forest61.jpg

Head deeper into the cavern and climb out of it. You’ll find that it’s raining. Follow the only path forward.

Forgotten Forest62.jpg

When you see a lantern on the ground, have your Rot pick it up. Bring it to the other lantern up ahead — to the right of it is a flat stone. Place this lantern on that stone. You can see where in our screenshot below.

Forgotten Forest64.jpg

This lights up the blue crystal up above. Shoot it and follow its trail to find the next crystal to shoot. The trail will go to eight different crystals. After the eight, the corrupted bulb in the central area will open up. Sic some Rot to it and then shoot the corrupted bulb. This will clean the area and Rusu will appear.

After talking to Rusu, look behind him and slightly to the left. You’ll find a chest there, pictured below. Open the chest to get the Pinecone Rot Hat .

Forgotten Forest65.jpg

After this, warp back to Taro’s Tree using any of the Warp points in the Forgotten Forest . You should warp right next to the objective, which is marked yellow on your map. When you arrive at the objective, you’ll need to interact with the marking on the ground. This will trigger a cutscene.

Forgotten Forest66.jpeg

Time for a boss fight.

Forgotten Forest68.jpg

Let’s get this out of the way: Corrupt Taro is far and away the hardest boss in the game thus far. Taro hits hard, they’re extremely quick, and they have a lot of health. Fortunately, you have us.

When the fight begins, use Focus to target the small yellow hanging lantern around Taro’s neck. This will do a nice chunk of damage and it will stun Taro.

Forgotten Forest69.jpg

Run in and get a few hits on them and then prepare to dodge backwards or run away — they’re about to do some kind of reciprocal move.

Here’s what to look out for coming from Taro: If they throw their hands into the air, they’re about to pound the ground and not only does that move do a ton of direct damage, it also does splash damage that contains a nice amount of knockback too. If you get knocked down by this move, Taro will likely land another hit on you while you’re trying to get up. Taro might also slash at you and if you can parry the first hit, go for it. Be sure to punish with a counter move as well. You can also try and tank the move, but be careful — Taro doesn’t hit just once but three times when they slash....usually. The third hit might break your shield and cause damage. However, if you have the Shield Health + upgrade, you should be able to tank all three hits.

Taro will also sometimes jump across the arena to hit you so don’t think you’re safe just because you’re far away. A simple dodge will save you here. While it might sound dangerous and scary, we actually found that staying close to Taro was safer than keeping distance between Kena and Taro as a result. Plus, if you dodge behind Taro when they slash, you’ll usually be safe from the two slashes that follow the first.

Forgotten Forest70.jpg

If you see some pink symbols in the space in front of Taro, get ready to dodge backward — they’re about to do a strange spinning attack that damages from all directions. Another big move to watch out for is a massive, arena-sprawling AEO explosion. It seems to happen every time you get a third of Taro’s health down. If you see Taro charge up, as it were, run and dodge backwards as much as possible (or if you’re shield bar is full, use a shield) because he’s literally about to explode.

Here’s a tried and true strategy for taking down Taro that worked for us:

  • Target their yellow lantern when it’s glowing yellow to stun the boss and open them up for damage.
  • In the meantime, target the maroon diamond weak spot on their elbow to stun them too.
  • Attack them with Kena’s melee attacks in between ranged attacks and the dodges necessary to not die at the hands of Taro.
  • When you have a full drop of Courage, you can choose to either heal using one of the two healing flowers in the arena (be careful as they don’t respawn after use) or you can sic some Rot onto Taro.
  • If you sic Rot onto Taro, pay attention and think fast: they’ll turn Taro’s shoulder into a blue orb and if you shoot that orb with the Spirit Bow, it will do a nice chunk of damage and stun Taro, opening them up for even more damage.
  • If you have the Courage to spare, a Rot Hammer hit does serious damage to Taro. It also stuns them for a second or two and it interrupts any attack Taro is tossing your way.

Forgotten Forest71.jpg

When you’ve finally taken down Taro’s health bar, it’ll throw its hands into the air and screech. Prepare to sic some Rot on it and when that happens, Taro’s entire body will glow blue. Use Pulse to clean Taro of the corruption.

Forgotten Forest72.jpg

A cutscene will then begin.

Forgotten Forest74.jpg

Following this cutscene, you’ll receive the Taro Mask Rot Hat . However, it’s important to note that this hat actually counts as a hat for the Taro’s Tree region of the game — not the Forgotten Forest region.

Meditation Spot 3

After defeating Corrupt Taro, the Relic insignia at Taro's Tree will become a Meditation Spot . Be sure to meditate here to permanently increase Kena's health. The game doesn't track Meditation Spots like it does the rest of the collectibles so this technically doesn't matter, but on IGN's interactive map, this Meditation Spot is in the Taro's Tree section because that's where this spot can be found. However, it cannot be found until completing the final quest of the Forgotten Forest and when you complete this chest, you'll be placed right at this meditation spot.

Honor Taro at the Mask Shrine

The next thing you need to do after this is head back to the Village . Here, you must honor Taro at the Mask Shrine.

Head to IGN’s The Village page to continue this walkthrough .

Blessed Carlo Acutis’ Mother Places His First-Class Relic in New Diocesan Shrine in New Jersey

‘Through Carlo, Jesus is doing a lot of miracles, healings and conversions. This is a time when we need saints because the darkness is all around us, and young people have so many dangers. ... Carlo is a sign of hope. He passed over all these things, too. He was not polluted by it. This is possible for everybody. Our children can still be holy.’

Antonia Salzano Acutis holds her son Carlo Acutis' reliquary as she walks with Trenton Diocese Bishop David O'Connell (right) and St. Dominic pastor Father Brian Woodrow at the St. Dominic Church in Brick, New Jersey, on Oct. 1.

The faith community of St. Dominic parish in Brick, New Jersey, celebrated the life of Blessed Carlo Acutis on Oct. 1 with a very special guest among them — Acutis’ mother, Antonia Salzano Acutis. After the jubilant Mass concluded, Salzano Acutis took the relic of her son from the hands of Bishop David O’Connell of the Diocese of Trenton, New Jersey, and together they processed to the narthex, where a new shrine to Carlo Acutis was blessed.

In her remarks to the faithful gathered for the celebration, Salzano Acutis declared: “Sainthood is for everyone. Carlo became a saint by practicing the seven theological and cardinal virtues.” She emphasized: “This is what makes us all saints.”

“Carlo prayed the Rosary and read sacred Scripture every day,” she shared. “He went to confession each week. Since his holy Communion at 7 years old, he never missed daily Mass. Before Mass or after, he would also spend time in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Carlo believed the Eucharist was his ‘highway to heaven.’”

Blessed Carlo’s Life

Carlo Acutis was born on May 3, 1991, in London and then moved with his family to Milan, Italy. There, he grew up to be a “normal” teenager — a gamer, a brilliant computer programmer and a website developer. He liked to travel, enjoyed his PlayStation, and took great care of his pets. He loved St. Francis of Assisi and the poor. He was also deeply in love with this Catholic faith and practiced it with all his heart.

At just 14 years old, Acutis turned his devotion to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament into a website . He cataloged more than 100 Eucharistic miracles around the world that have been approved by the Catholic Church. The website inspired the “ Eucharistic Miracles ” exhibit , which has been viewed more than 10,000 times across the globe and counting.

On Oct. 4, 2006, after just a few days of illness, Acutis was diagnosed with promyelocytic leukemia. He offered his sufferings for the conversion of sinners. His mother offered her suffering as well. She prayed there would be greater love for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and for those who did not yet know Christ. After slipping into a coma, Carlo Acutis’ heart stopped beating on Oct. 12, 2006.

Because of his love for the poor and his desire to emulate St. Francis of Assisi, Acutis requested to be buried in Assisi, Italy. The cause for his canonization opened officially in 2013. Pope Francis declared him “Venerable” in 2019 and “Blessed” in 2020. He is one step away from being canonized a saint.

Just a Regular Teenager

“Carlo was a regular teenager like me,” said Anthony Ricardo, a 15-year-old sophomore at Morris Hills High School in Rockaway, New Jersey, who came to the event. “I really wanted to see Carlo’s mom, and I wanted to see his relics. Carlo was totally devoted to the Eucharist, which I think is the most important part of our faith.”

Traveling from Allentown, New Jersey, the Schuster family brought six of their eight children to see the dedication of the new shrine. Eight-year-old Brian Schuster said: “I came to see Carlo’s relics. He reminds me to be holy.”

Brian’s 10-year-old brother, Paul, added: “I wanted to meet Carlo’s mom. Carlo is a role model for all kids. He teaches us how to get closer to Jesus by going to Mass as often as we can and by praying the Rosary every day.”

One of Their Own

Blessed Carlo’s journey to the Diocese of Trenton began several years ago, when Father Marian Kokorzycki, parochial vicar of St. Dominic parish, brought a relic of Blessed Carlo back from a pilgrimage to Assisi for the diocese. Bishop O’Connell supported the idea of a shrine at the parish devoted to the new Blessed.

“I love his story,” Bishop O’Connell told CNA. “I’ve read everything I could get my hands on about Blessed Carlo Acutis. He was a normal boy, but his devotion to Jesus in the Eucharist and love for his Catholic faith created a collective orientation toward God in all that he did.”

Sometime later, at the annual Catholic school Mass for the diocese, a video was shown to the students before Mass about Blessed Carlo Acutis. “I watched the young people in the church,” Bishop O’Connell recalled. “They were riveted. You could hear a pin drop. That’s when the idea came to me.”

In April 2022, Bishop O’Connell declared Blessed Carlo Acutis the patron of students in his diocese. “Since then, I’ve noticed Blessed Carlo Acutis’ picture is in all of our schools,” Bishop O’Connell said. “There is an awareness of him. Young people talk about him. He was a computer geek. He went to school. He even defended kids from bullies — all the things the young people of our diocese do. Carlo is one of their own. I’m counting on him to help me evangelize the young people of the Diocese of Trenton.”

‘A Higher Project’

During the ceremony, the reliquary containing Blessed Carlo’s relic stood prominently before his portrait in the shrine. Salzano Acutis looked on as Bishop O’Connell blessed the shrine in honor of her son. The room was packed to capacity. Many held their phones over their heads to capture the historic moment. Even though it was a Sunday, the students of St. Dominic Catholic School proudly wore their school uniforms.

Then it was time for Salzano Acutis to leave Carlo with his new parish family. “As a mother,” she said, “it was a pleasure for me to do this for Carlo. This is a higher project. Through Carlo, God will help many people. It makes me very happy to see so many young people here today.”

“Through Carlo, Jesus is doing a lot of miracles, healings and conversions. This is a time when we need saints because the darkness is all around us, and young people have so many dangers. Pornography, drugs, gaming addictions, alcohol, brainwashing from the media and its anti-Gospel — the danger is strong. Carlo is a sign of hope. He passed over all these things, too. He was not polluted by it. This is possible for everybody. Our children can still be holy.”

A small crow stands in front of a glowing shrine of a demon head with red eyes.

Death’s Door can be hard to the low amount of vitality and magic you can have at once, but you can gain more of both by finding shrines . Shrines are hidden structures with monstrous faces found around the world, and they each give a crystal — pink for magic and green for health. Our Death’s Door guide will list out where to find all the shrines with maps.

There are 16 shrines throughout the game. Eight of them are for vitality and eight of them are for magic. To increase your health or magic bars, you need to collect four shards from shrines.

We’ve listed the shrines in the order you can access them below. Some of the shrines are in early areas, but require abilities that you don’t get until later.

Table of contents

  • Vitality shrine locations
  • Magic shrine locations

Vitality shrine 1 of 8 (The Lost Cemetery)

A map of The Lost Cemetery by a lift with a green gem indicator to the left.

The first shrine you can access is below a lift in The Lost Cemetery . When you get off the lift, walk north around the structure, and the camera will rotate, showing another path. Follow this path to grab your first vitality crystal.

Vitality shrine 2 of 8 (The Urn Witch’s Inner Furnace)

A split image showing where to find a missing platform in Death’s Door on the left, with a vitality shrine on the right.

The second shrine you can get to is in the Urn Witch’s Furnace Observation Rooms . At the point where you are in the center of a room with three horned platforms, there is a fourth platform to the north. Shoot the platform with your bow and arrow to call it over. Ride it to the other side and follow the path for the shrine.

If you missed this going through the first time, you’ll want to head to the Urn Witch’s Inner Furnace door and go south, past the entrance where she was holding Pothead captive.

Vitality shrine 3 of 8 (The Estate of the Urn Witch)

A split image showing an unlit fire pit on the left with a vitality shrine on the right.

In the Estate of the Urn Witch (the garden part, not inside the Ceramic Manor), there is a set of fire pits. You can find them to the south east of her manor entrance. Light up these up using your fire ability and drop into the newly revealed hole to get to the shrine.

Vitality shrine 4 of 8 (Overgrown Ruins)

A split image showing a cliff with a sewer lid-like circle on the ground on the left and a vitality shrine on the right.

In the northeast of the Overgrown Ruins , there’s two tunnel caps. Dive into one and follow the tunnel to get to a cave with the shrine inside.

Vitality shrine 5 of 8 (Mushroom Dungeon)

A split image showing an opening in a dungeon wall on the left and a vitality shrine on the right.

The fifth shrine is in the Mushroom Dungeon , specifically in one of the rooms where you fought swarms of enemies from red doors. You can access this area by taking the western door in the room that has the Hall of Doors door. In the top corner, there’s a breakable wall that you can blow up once you get the bomb skill . Inside a short puzzle that requires you to quickly light fire pits with your fire ability . After completing this, you’ll get access to the shrine.

Vitality shrine 6 of 8 (The Lost Cemetery)

A map of The Lost Cemetery in Death’s Door of a roundabout path with anchors that lead to a green shrine.

Once you get the hookshot , head back to The Lost Cemetery . There’s a hookshot anchor behind the initial door from The Grove of Spirits. This will lead you around the southern part of the map and to a vitality shrine.

Vitality shrine 7 of 8 (The Stranded Sailor)

A split image that shows a dock to hookshot to on the left and a vitality shrine on the right.

Southwest of The Stranded Sailor , there’s a path to hookshot to. You’ll need to take out several enemies, all while dodging the gas bombs from one of the cannon-wielding guys from the Urn Witch’s Laboratory. After you defeat them, you’ll get access to a vitality shrine.

Vitality shrine 8 of 8 (The Camp of the Free Crows)

A split image showing the entrance to an icy challenge on the left with a vitality shrine on the right.

The last shrine is arguably the toughest. Outside of the Old Watchtowers and the Camp of the Free Crows , there’s a path outside to the south. This path leads you to a slippery challenge that requires you to quickly hookshot anchors while activating platforms. It can be tough to get through as you’ll probably fall off the cliffs and miss the timings many times, but once you get through it, you’ll have access to the last vitality shrine.

Magic shrine 1 of 8 (Estate of the Urn Witch)

A split image with a garden secret path on the left and a magic shrine on the right.

The first magic shrine you can access is in the Estate of the Urn Witch (again, in the garden area). From right outside the entrance to the Ceramic Manor, you can go north to a seemingly dead end. However, there’s a cut in the hedges that allows you to travel through the bushes to the bricked off part of the map. Go beyond the manor in the top corner and the camera will rotate, showing a new path to the shrine.

Magic shrine 2 of 8 (Urn Witch’s Ceramic Manor)

A split image of a bathroom with shiny floors on the left and a magic shrine on the right.

In the Urn Witch’s Ceramic Manor , you’ll encounter a bathroom if you go west from the lobby. The bathroom will have very shiny floors where you can see the reflection of two vases and a door. Hit where the vases would be according to the reflections to break them, and enter where the door appears to access the shrine.

Magic shrine 3 of 8 (The Lost Cemetery)

A map of The Lost Cemetery in Death’s Door of a winding mountain path that leads to a cave. A red shrine sits on top of a cliff.

Once you get the fire ability from The Urn Witch’s Ceramic Manor, you can access the northern part of The Lost Cemetery . Use the fire spell on the lantern to unlock the route to The Stranded Sailor. If you head south down the ladders along the path, you’ll enter a cave. In the cave, you’ll have to fight a big enemy before you can access the exit. Once you exit, follow the path to a shrine.

Magic shrine 4 of 8 (The Stranded Sailor)

A split image that shows a blocked off icy path on the left and a magic shrine on the right.

Once you get to The Stranded Sailor , you can climb up the mountain to the north. Continue on the path to the north and climb up the nearby building. Destroy the ice blocking the path and the camera will rotate to show a new path. Take the ladder down and dive into the manhole cover. Follow this path to get to a magic shrine.

Magic shrine 5 of 8 (Overgrown Ruins)

A split map showing a cliff ledge on the left and a magic shrine on the right.

In the Overgrown Ruins , head south from the Village Settlement until you see a break in the wall railing that allows you to jump down. Once you do, the camera will rotate and the path will reveal a shrine.

Magic shrine 6 of 8 (Flooded Fortress)

A split image showing a secret path on the left and a magic shrine on the right

In the Flooded Fortress , there’s a path on a wooden bridge that leads northwest. It seems to lead to a dead end, but if you fire an arrow through the stone arch, it will reveal a bridge that will lead you to the shrine.

Magic shrine 7 of 8 (Overgrown Ruins)

A split image showing a hookshot anchor in water on the left and a magic shrine on the right.

Once you get the hookshot , you can access a magic shrine in the Overgrown Ruins . From the area the gondola drops you off, there’s a northern path that you can hookshot to. Hookshot along, use an arrow to activate the glowing pink mechanism, and hookshot to the next area. You’ll need to fight a series of enemies that emerge from pink doors. Once you do, climb up the newly revealed path and get your shrine.

Magic shrine 8 of 8 (Castle Lockstone)

A split image showing where to hookshot in on the left and a magic shrine on the right.

In Castle Lockstone ’s main entrance area, head to the northwest path and climb the ladder to the west. Keep following the path until you get into the room with several anchors for your hookshot . Shoot on to the closest floating platform with the anchor and then shoot into the nearby keyhole window to the north. This will hook you and you’ll go into the hole and there’s a hidden switch inside. Flip it and hookshot to the gate that opens to get your shrine.

Mieruko-chan: Miko’s Ominous Message Comes Full Circle

In Episode 10, Miko finally figures out the shrine spirits' message to her after they once again come to her aid. But can she make the most of it?

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Episode 10 of Mieruko-chan , "Don't Look, " now streaming on Funimation .

Though Miko’s adventures through the paranormal world have mostly been episodic,  Mieruko-chan has introduced some notable plot points  throughout its run. One of the series’ biggest questions comes in the form of the shrine spirits, their intentions and how they relate to Miko’s paranormal abilities. Though fans don’t get all the answers yet, Episode 10 gives provides a clearer idea of the significance these spirits have in the overall story.

Miko is continuously bothered by the disturbing female ghost haunting Zen, making it difficult for her to concentrate in class and throwing her off entirely. She's had to endure a lot since the start of Mieruko-chan , but having such a menacing spirit become a constant presence in her daily life is definitely having long-term negative effects on her.

RELATED:  Mieruko-chan: Yulia's Master Plan Goes Horribly Wrong

Zen’s ghost isn’t just affecting Miko, either . With Hanna suffering from constant fatigue, Miko begins to wonder if the spirits haunting their substitute teacher are feeding on the former's immense life force. Though she herself doesn’t know it, Hanna seems to be the most at-risk person in class with Zen around.

Between constantly worrying about the ghost haunting Zen and Hanna’s susceptibility to the spirits around her, Miko is exhausted. No longer as sharp and observant as she usually is, she falls into a trap when encountering a spirit in the park. An aggressive spirit disguised as a child takes advantage of this growing fatigue and tries to attack her, catching her off guard. This is one of the few spirits to have shown violent intent toward Miko, displaying just how dangerous some of the ghosts in Mieruko-chan can be when acknowledged.

Luckily for Miko, the shrine maiden spirits once again come to her rescue. With this latest assist from the mysterious specters, Miko finally pieces together the meaning behind the “three times” message she was given following their first encounter. For whatever reason, the shrine spirits have only taken to aiding Miko in a life-or-death situation three times -- and she’s already used two of them.

While Miko has discovered the meaning behind the shrine spirits’ warning, it still doesn’t answer what they are and why they’re helping her to begin with. If they were simply benevolent spirits, one would assume they’d just come to her aid whenever she was in need. But Miko must now capitalize on her remaining assist , using the spirits to once again navigate the terrifying and new world she’s found herself a part of.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits - How to Clear Taro’s Shrines

Helping to clear Taro's Shrines can be confusing, so we take you through clearing all 4!

spirits of the shrine

In Kena: Bridge of Spirits , you will find yourself searching for a way to help Beni and Saiya find their brother Taro. There is more to this story than first appears but without spoiling too much, you will need to complete a few tasks to do with Taro's Spirit before you can help Taro. One of the more complicated tasks is clearing Taro's Shrines, so we're going to show you how. Read More: Kena: Bridge Of Spirits Could Come To Xbox

Table of Contents

Kena: bridge of spirits - what are taro’s shrines, the woods shrine, the water shrine, the god tree shrine, the fishing shrine, getting to the guardian tree.

Taro's Shrines are a set of 4 Forest Shrines within Forgotten Forest . Taro's Spirit has corrupted the Shrines and closed the door of the Guardian Tree. It's your job to clear all 4 Shrines and their immediate areas from corruption. Once all 4 Shrines are cleared, you will be able to get into the Guardian Tree. In this guide, we're going to take you through how to find each Shrine, how to clear them and we have even put them in the order that they're the simplest to find.

Finding the Woods Shrine

Where you begin the Shrine quest and you meet Rusu at the start of Forgotten Forest, there will be a Warp Shrine. Walk to it and then face Rusu. From here, look around and you should see a body of water on your right. Walk to the water's edge then look slightly to your left. Follow the body of water until you see a forest path on your right. It looks blocked at first glance but all you need to do is jump up.

Kena in Forgotten Forest looking for forest path to follow.

Follow the path around until you come to a clearing and you should see a large infected area in front of you. As soon as you enter this area, enemies will start to appear so be ready.

Kena looking at the infected area of Forgotten Forest near the Wood Shrine

Clearing the Shrine

The first set of enemies will spawn on the ground level where you are. There will be one big enemy and an evil Moth. Take out the large enemy first with either your arrow or heavy Staff strikes.

The evil Moth can actually be taken down by your Rot. Command them to go to the Moth as if you were going to blind it and they will destroy the moth. Two enemies will appear on the fallen tree at the rear of the area and another evil Moth will spawn at ground level where you are.

Deal with the Moth how you want to and use your bow to take down the twins on the tree.

Kena pointing bow at evil moth in Wood Shrine

After they've gone down, head to the path leading up a slope on your right . When you reach the top of the slope you will see more enemies spawning.

Kena standing in Wood Shrine Clearing forest path on right

This time, take care of the enemies however you want to but be careful not to fall off into the poisoned waters below you.

The final set of enemies will appear on the other side of the fallen tree, this is where the Shrine is. Take out the enemies however you see fit whilst still being mindful of the poisoned waters below you.

When the enemies have been cleared out, the Heart of the Deadzone (the big red flower) will open .

Aim at it and command your Rot to go to it.

The Heart of the Deadzone is covering the Wood Shrine

Once they turn it blue, shoot it with an arrow or use your Pulse ability to destroy it.

The area and the Shrine are now clear when Rusu appears .

Finding the Shrine

From the Wood Shrine, look around until you see a big blue flower on a tree. Stand underneath this and look out over the edge of the area.

You should see a small group of unhealthy trees sitting on an Island below you with corruption around them.

Kena looking at the infected trees that mark the location of the Water Shrine.

If you're not sure if you're looking at the right thing, use Taro's Mask . The Island should have a blue circle on it. Jump down here and swim around the edge of the small island until you come to the slope that lets you get onto it.

The Shrine should be directly in front of you now:

Kena in front of the infected Water Shrine.

When you're on the Island and looking at the Shrine in front of you, look around at the ground below you. You should see what seems like unimportant crystal fragments on the floor:

Kena looking at crystal fragments in the floor by Water Shrine

These are extremely important .

Do not move, simply look to your right and you will see a blue boulder that you can send your Rot to.

Aim at the boulder and command your Rot to pick it u p. Once they have picked it up, get them to move it onto the piece of ground with the fragments in it on the right of the Shrine. When they have done that, look at the Shrine again then look to your left.

You should see a piece of stone sticking out from the Island and it will have another blue boulder on it.

Get the Rot to move it onto the other piece of ground with fragments in it.

Kena is in the foreground with Water Shrine behind her

Cross to the other side of the body of water until your view is the same as the image above and stand on the blue piece of the stone circle on the ground. Face the Shrine again and use your Pulse ability to ignite the crystals . If you've put the boulders in the right place, they will complete the chain and the Heart of the Deadzone will open.

Once it is open, send your Rot to it and once they turn it blue you can shoot it with a charged arrow.

Kena pointing a charged arrow at Heart of Deadzone

The Shrine will now clear , a Forest Tear will grow and Rusu will appear again.

Buckle up, this Shrine takes a little bit of time to find and a tiny bit of exploring. From the restored Water Shrine, look around you until you see a stepped cliff in the distance. It should look like this:

Kena is facing the stepped cliffs leading to God Tree Shrine.

Once you've found it, head over to it and climb up it .

When you reach the top you need to stop and go left .

Follow the path until you come to a bit that drops down slightly. (It will have a fallen statue on it that the Rot can pick up). Stand at the fallen statue and look around until you see a gigantic tree with platforms around it.

It will look like this:

Kena is facing the God Tree Shrine platforms.

Jump down into the water below you and head onto the shore of the big tree.

When you hit land, stop and look around you for a blue vase. It should be on your left and all you need to do is get your Rot to interact with it. After they interact with the vase, the big blue flower on the side of the tree will open. It will be easy to spot as it should be directly in front of you.

Kena looking at Blue Flower on God Tree Shrine climbing path.

Shoot the flower with your arrow and it will pull you up onto the lower platform.

Walk to the end of the platform and look up until you see a climbing ledge . Jump up and climb up this then instantly turn around.

You should see another climbing ledge on a slightly higher platform and all you have to do is jump to this, then climb up it. Keep scaling the platforms until you come to the platform with the Rot Fruit on it.

Look around you and you should see another blue flower on another tree across from you. Shoot the flower with an arrow and it will pull you over to the platform on its side. Walk around this platform until you come to a lift contraption. Stand on the contraption and look across from you.

You should see a crystal embedded into a piece of the tree and you need to shoot this with an arrow.

Kena is aiming the Bow at the lift trigger switch.

Once you've shot this, it will trigger the lift to move and it will carry you to the other side.

Get off the lift and walk around the platform to your right until it drops you down to a climbing trail. Follow the climbing trail and use it to scale the tree. At the end of the climb trail, you will be brought to a platform where you can finally see the Shrine.

Kena is looking at the God Tree Shrine

When you see the Shrine , it will be on another platform on the other side of a broken wooden bridge. The enemies will start to spawn.

The first enemy will be on the side of the Shrine and it will have purple eyes. This enemy will throw exploding purple crystals at you . The crystals will deal a lot of damage to you or knock you off of the platforms and kill you. If you die, the enemy cycle starts again so try to avoid this. Take out the purple-eyed enemy with charged arrows .

Once it's down, use the blue flower on the side of the Shrine to pull yourself over to that side.

Evil Moths will spawn on the side you arrived on. You can use your Rot and arrows to take them out, but watch your back as more enemies will spawn quickly. On the side, you're on (the Shrine side) two enemies will spawn. Take care of them first and then use the blue flower above the platform you arrived on to pull you to that side again. The evil Moths will have multiplied so you need to get rid of them o r they will try to headbutt you off of the platforms.

Other enemies will have spawned on the third platform so try to avoid being in the range of and hit by purple crystals. When the Moths have been dealt with, use the blue flower by the shrine to get to the Shrine side and then turn around to face the third platform.

Kena pointing Bow at enemies on the third God Tree platform.

In the trees of the third platform, there will be the other purple-eyed enemy that has been throwing crystals at you. Use charged arrows to take them out first and then turn your attention to the remaining enemies. Use the blue flower on that platform to pull you to it and you will find a health restoration flower. At the flower, turn around and look at the platform you arrived on .

In the trees, there will be a well-hidden enemy with purple eyes.

You need to take this out quickly with arrows as it's in the prime spot to knock you off of the platform with a crystal.

Once you've cleared the area of enemies, the Heart of the Deadzone will open . Send your Rot to it and use your Pulse or an arrow to destroy it. T he area will be restored and Rusu will pop up again.

Getting Down

Getting down from here isn't as easy as jumping and aiming for the water. You will die if you do this.

Instead, follow the platform around to the left of the Shrine and it will bring you to another lift. Stand on the lift and face the tree, you should see another crystal switch.

Kena aiming at lift trigger switch to get down from God Tree Shrine

Shoot this with an arrow and it will take you down to ground level safely.

From the point that the lift brought you to ground level at the God Tree Shrine, head down the steps to your right until it brings you to a path. Use your map to make sure you're facing in the direction of the Fishing Shrine.

Map view of the Fishing Shrine.

When you're facing the right way, follow the path around. Keep to your left and you should come upon the Shrine.

Kena looking at the Fishing Shrine on her right.

This one is more of a puzzle than the others. Stand facing the Shrine and pan the camera to look around you. You should see 4 flame plinths with crystals on the front of them. Look back at the Shrine. The candles in front of the shrine match the positioning of each of the Plinths and they hold the answer to the puzzle. The number of candles on each piece will show you which plinth you need to shoot and in which order.

Kena facing The Water Shrine

The one with 1 candle will be first, the one with 2 candles will be second, and so on.

All you need to do is shoot the crystals on the plinths in the right order and the corruption will clear. If you hit them in the wrong order, you'll need to fight off evil Moths before trying the puzzle again. Once the area is cleared , Rusu will appear and you can make your way to the Guardian Tree.

Head back down the path you used to get to the Fishing Shrine and it will take you directly to the Guardian Tree. When you're at the Tree, the 4 flames in front of the door will be alight now that all 4 Shrines are clear. Stand on this spot:

Kena is standing on the trigger for the Guardian Door.

Face the door and use your Pulse to trigger the door opening , but all is not as it seems.

Get ready for a fight because Sprout Captain appears through the door but fortunately we have tips for defeating Sprout Captain. Once it has been defeated, head through the door and send your Rot to the Heart of the Deadzone. Use your Pulse or arrow to destroy it and you will have finally cleared all of the Shrines.

Helping Taro is really important to Beni and Saiya in Kena: Bridge of Spirits , so taking your time to do a rather long quest for them is worth it. Along the way, you may even discover some cool hats to purchase for your Rot now you know how to unlock the Hat Cart.

Please rate the application for me to encourage us more and thanks

Malan: It's awesome when you open it and all the applications are already there, which saves a lot of time and is just cool. But it doesn't always install everything; it was only one of eleven items that weren't in the play store, to begin with, but it did install the other two from the same pc.

Foxworth Barly: It's a good app, but it offers me much more than I want. I'm just interested in local data, but this software offers you a number of choices for installing applications you don't need. To make it a 5-star app, they should remove the extra nonsense.

Alshiti roan: Excellent application. It's what I need to mount anything!!!! I still request that the app's developers make the app installable because it claims it's corrupt but other than that, it's awesome.

Chrisman con: If the notification "Nice application available" occurs while attempting to install applications, simply open "APK Installer."

Shrine Inkwater Marsh

Spirit Shrine in Inkwater Marsh

Combat Shrines (or Spirit Shrines) are one of the types of "challenge" shrines, where Ori can fight multiple waves of enemies for various rewards. When completed, the combat shrine will reward you with a Shard Slot Upgrade .

Once activated, the base of the shrine will start to glow, and enemies will emerge from the background. Every time a wave is completed, the shrine will eject around 5 energy shards , and one of the pillars will glow. Once all of the waves are complete the central shrine structure will glow and a Shard Slot Upgrade will appear. The enemies spawned by the shrine will not drop health, energy or spirit light. If the player does not want to continue they can leave the shrine 'arena'. A notification will appear on screen notifying the player that they are leaving, warning them that straying too far will forfeit the shrine attempt.

Ori can complete the Shrines multiple times. There is little reason to do this, as the reward in only a small amount of spirit light.
