Unknown Specimen 1

Unknown Specimen 1 (A.K.A. White Face ) is an enemy that can be randomly encountered in the Endless Mode .

Unknown Specimen 1 is a floating, white pixelated face. The face has empty eye sockets, uneven teeth, a scar down one eye and two nostrils.

Introduction

Before it attacks, rooms will turn pixelated and a loud, ominous piano tune will play to warn the player before it arrives. After 5 more rooms, the chase will begin.

A static noise will play if the player is close to Unknown Specimen 1. It will appear somewhere within the room and looking at Unknown Specimen 1 will make it teleport away to a different location while the screen flashes red, accompanied by glitchy sounds.

After 25 rooms, the rooms will start looping, preventing the room number from going up. Longer rooms will start to appear as well. This will make the chase longer but after 15 loops Unknown Specimen 1 will leave, allowing the player to proceed. Some rooms may also contain bloody vines hanging from the ceiling.

Unknown Specimen 1 deals 30 damage upon contact and has a half second cooldown between each hit, and will teleport away after hitting the player. It goes through walls and any obstacles. Using the Axe has no effect.

When the player is killed by Unknown Specimen 1, the death screen flashes with the words "DEATH IS NO ESCAPE" for a few seconds. The view then shifts to a dark room with only Unknown Specimen 1 present, and a hanged up corpse in a sack that has the player's system name as text. When Unknown Specimen 1 comes closer, it says the following sentences:

"Look at you. . .

Your body is all closed up."

The game will ask the player to confirm the word CLOSED , or to type something else. If the player types a name, the game will close automatically. However, typing Open will show the corpse's guts ripped out, and the second chase will begin.

Second Chase

During this chase, the walls are red, Unknown Specimen 1 will become bigger and start floating towards the player like most other specimens. It will go through walls but won't teleport. The player's health is kept on 1, and if Unknown Specimen 1 damages them, the game will close. Escaping Unknown Specimen 1 during this chase will end its chase entirely, and the player's health will start regenerating again. The second chase lasts 10 loops.

  • Its starting sound is very similar to the track playing in the "Not to see" room from IMSCARED.
  • The breathing sounds playing in the later portion of this track are also reminiscent of similar breathing sounds found in the Market area of the game.
  • The mechanic of Unknown Specimen 1's chase, alongside the static sound it produces, is similar to several of its chases in the original game, where a similar static sound will get louder and louder the closer it is to the player.
  • Unknown Specimen 1's game over screen is similar to a scene where it teleports the player to a pitch-black room with a noose, with the entity slowly approaching the player while talking to them.
  • The second chase room is reminiscent of the flesh room where the Heart is located in IMSCARED.
  • Unknown Specimen 1 prompting the player to type in something is a nod to the original game, where at certain points it asked the player to type in its name. Typing the wrong name will close the game, which is also true for Spooky's Jump Scare Mansion.
  • When the player gets killed by Unknown Specimen 1, Spooky 's flashing face in the main menu is temporarily replaced with Unknown Specimen 1 until the game is restarted.
  • Unknown Specimen 1 was added to the game due to AMGSheena and Akuma Kira's love for the game IMSCARED .
  • Unknown Specimen 1, along with Unknown Specimen 5 , are the only Specimens who can temporarily stop the Room counter from going up during a chase.
  • The longer rooms are the same type of rooms that can appear in Story Mode when the player is in Rooms 600-699 , where Specimen 10 gets introduced.
  • Unknown Specimen 1 is, so far, the only specimen with a "second chance" chase mechanic.

Unknown Specimen 1 does not use its "realistic" face anymore in its regular chase. It will only use it in its second chase, glitching between it and the pixelated face.

Unknown Specimen 1's introduction room is an L shaped, normal room that after a brief moment of the player entering, it will turn pixelated, accompanied of a piano tune. Unknown Specimen 1 will appear stationary at the entrance door, unable to harm the player. After the player goes through 5 more rooms, Unknown Specimen 1 will start chasing the player.

Unknown Specimen 1 no longer teleports when looked at. Instead, it will teleport after a fixed amount of time or after hitting the player. If it hits the player, its speed will not reset. It no longer freezes the room counter on its first chase.

It now gradually gains speed, starting at a crawl, but soon speeding up to be slightly faster than the player's walking speed. This speed will reset each time Unknown Specimen 1 teleports. After 25 rooms, the rooms will change to long hallways with tight turns, and after 15 rooms the chase will end.

It has a high chance to appear behind the exit door after entering a room, which can be avoided if the player is fast but more often than not will result in the player getting hit. The screen will flash red only when Unknown Specimen 1 is close to the player.

Specimen 11 will not be able to make doors disappear when Unknown Specimen 1 is present.

Unknown Specimen 1's death screen has a few visual changes, such as Unknown Specimen 1 approaching the player in several small jumps instead of smoothly and a keyboard appearing on the screen, where the player will choose a letter by dragging the cursor over it.

In its second chase, Unknown Specimen 1 is now much slower and no longer phases through walls, giving the player a better chance at escaping it. However, another specimen may rarely join the chase, with the exception of Unknown Specimen 3 . It will freeze the room counter, however. After 14 loops, the player will escape the second chase, start regenerating health again and Unknown Specimen 1 will stop chasing.

It's extremely risky but recommended getting killed by Unknown Specimen 1 if the player is being chased by harder specimens and low on health to get a second chance using its second chase.

  • Unknown Specimen 3 used to be able to spawn during Unknown Specimen 1's second chase. Unknown Specimen 3 was not capable of damaging the player during the second chase, but they would surely die when leaving Unknown Specimen 1's second chase, as no health could be regenerated.
  • Sometime between the 2019 Hallowen Update and the Doll House Update, Unknown Specimen 1's chase would continue after escaping its second chase.
  • After the Halloween 2021 Update, the bloody vines that could only appear after exiting the second chase can now appear in any of Unknown Specimen 1's rooms.

Biography [ ]

Spooky's jump scare mansion [ ].

In the Secret Arcade Room in the manor, a note from the Karamari Hospital DLC, and the Spooky's Dollhouse DLC revealed the brief but understandable backstory of Spooky. Spooky started her life as a cute human girl who was insecure due to her cute appearance led her to be made fun of, especially during Halloween. She tried to wear her most frightening Halloween costume, but alas, she was still teased for being too cute.

On one Halloween night, when she tried to scare someone with her Red Death costume from the tale The Masque of the Red Death from Edgar Allan Poe and some fireworks, her victim, later revealed to be her father who suffered from PTSD, unexpectedly shot her to death with a rifle. Her father incriminated a homeless man as his daughter's killer by placing the gun next to him. The mortally wounded Spooky was presumably brought to the Karamari Hospital, where she died there. Her father blamed himself for not preventing it from happening, as he could not bring himself to hate her "killer" due to the said killer suffered PTSD due to them being scarred and traumatized by an accident with fireworks in the past.

Spooky-0

Due to her violent death and being a misunderstood girl who was ridiculed due to her cute appearance, Spooky returned as a ghost to take her revenge so she and other ghosts who were ridiculed due to adorable looks can rise and terrorize the living so they won't be ridiculed anymore. For that, she somehow gathered many people, including scientists and workers, to build a maze of 1,000 rooms below a derelict mansion upon the hill that casts a blanket of darkness over a town, and fills the maze with various monsters that identified as Specimens. Afterward, people who aided Spooky either left or were killed by monsters inside.

She then challenged an unspecified number of people to enter the labyrinth and survive various jumpscares and encounter with the monsters until they arrived at the 1000th room, but no one returned due to either being killed by the Specimens, or due to starvation and dehydration up until the protagonist arrived.

In the game, Spooky appears every two hundred rooms, to congratulate the player on the way, getting more miffed that they are not dying yet, tricking the player at Floor 250 (playing a harmless prank) and Floor 750 (saying she's giving the player infinite stamina, but instead disables sprinting).

In the final room (being Room 1,000), the player finds themselves in a peaceful field, leading the player to think they have survived the horrors of the mansion. However, the "sky" soon crashes as Spooky appears before the player, looking rather irritated that the protagonist managed to live. However, as Spooky is talking, Specimen 9 bellows out an angry roar, which cheers up the ghost, stating that the player needs to do one more thing before they can leave, being to beat a transformed Specimen 9.

The final boss can result in two different endings. If the player uses the axe too much in the game (even if when using it for Specimen 9's Boss form, for example), they will get the bad ending. The playable character repeatedly chops away at the beast, the screen getting more of a red tint with each swing. After this, Spooky then appears, both in congratulation and to say it was interesting to see them swing their weapon with reckless abandon. She then says she thinks they'll make a great example of a Specimen . After this, the protagonist is then shown dragging their axe behind them, as the screen reads "Bad Ending".

However, if the protagonist uses their weapon sparingly against Specimens and the boss, they are able to get the Good Ending. If they are to get said Good Ending, the roof collapses on both the hero and the beast. After this sudden event, Spooky suddenly appears once more, claiming that the protagonist died and became a ghost, due to their tragic death. After revealing this, both of them float above the floor, which reveals a ledge over a large number of ghosts in a large room. Spooky appears on a large screen in the center of the room, stating that her collection of specters now has the proper amount to execute her true plan, to lead an army on a quest to stop the fact people think ghosts are cute. After this, the game ends.

Karamari Hospital [ ]

In the Karamari Hospital DLC, Spooky appears after the elevator crashes, mentioning that she didn't remember the fact the mansion had the rooms, and leaves, allowing the player to explore the hospital. Later, she appears again to remark on the size of the hospital, interested, she leaves, after wishing her "recruit" luck. She appears yet again when the player leaves the hospital, noting the player forgot to find something inside the hospital after this leaving and saying goodbye to the player. After beating the mode once, the player unlocks the ability to play the New Game + version of Karamari Hospital, where the ghost wears a unique outfit similar to a nurse's garb.

Spooky's Dollhouse [ ]

In the Spooky's Dollhouse DLC, it is revealed that after Spooky was killed, her father used science and voodoo to bring her back to life as a ghost. However, in the process, a hellgate built to retrieve her soul malfunctioned and released demonic forces. A one-thousand room mansion was built to prevent the evil spirits from escaping. In the DLC, after sacrificing the doll to deactivate the seal in the seal chamber, the player appears in a maze of red corridors, full of enemies they can defeat with a rifle. At the end of the maze is a human Spooky in her Halloween costume. The gun goes off, shooting Spooky in the chest and killing her.

If the hellgate was not shut, its influences escape the mansion and reduce the world to ruins. However, in the good ending, if the hellgate was shut before putting Spooky to rest, the spirits within the mansion escape to the afterlife, including Spooky and her parents.

Personality [ ]

When still alive, Spooky was an insecure and misunderstood girl who was ridiculed for her cute appearance, which stemmed her determination to be able to scare anyone.

Sadly, it was what led to her untimely and violent demise, as when tried to pulling pranks from someone with fireworks and her Red Death Costume, the man panicked so bad out of fear that he shot her to death.

The violent death resulting in her return as a vengeful, sadistic, and manipulative ghost that Spooky unfortunately became. Her sadistic and indifferent to other people's wellbeing, which is made apparent as one of the Generic Lab assistants stated that Spooky gave cold shoulder when one of the monsters escaped.

Appearance [ ]

When still a human, Spooky had a cartoonish appearance and beautiful long blue hair. These traits remained even after she became a ghost, though her skin becomes light blue. Her casual outfit back when still human consists of a knee-length white dress, with little white shoes and red socks. These attire is later replaced by a tattered light blue dress upon her becoming a ghost.

Spooky

  • She also appears to have quite the ego, with all the names in the high-score screen of Mall of Spook, even the player's, being Spooky's name.
  • Spooky is left-handed, a clue to her evil nature, since left-handed people were historically seen as sinister.
  • At some points when starting or pausing the game, Spooky's face may pop up on the screen.
  • Spooky seems to like Edgar Allen Poe's work, as she dressed up as the Red Death from The Masque of the Red Death on the Halloween she was killed by mistake.
  • Although Spooky is a ghost, which are commonly seen not being able to touch physical things, she can touch food items, such as eating a sandwich in art promoting Karamari Hospital.

Spooky’s House of Jump Scares Renamed To Spooky’s Jump Scare Mansion

A legal battle forced the game's name to be changed.

JumpScareMansionHeader

It’s an unfortunate scenario to see. But not all indie games can be saved from the pitfalls that come along the path to fame. That’s the case of what happened to Spooky’s House of Jump Scares, now known as Spooky’s Jump Scare Mansion . A developer on the game, Sheena, took to Twitter to make the initial announcement.

Spooky's has been renamed to Spooky's Jump Scare Mansion. Why? Because of an unfortunate legal battle. pic.twitter.com/XGMdxsKFCe — Sheena Perez (@AMGSheena) May 20, 2016

The developer published a Twitlonger a few hours later, explaining what had happened.

Psychobilly2422 here, you might’ve noticed a few updates recently, and we here at Lag Studios owe you an explanation. What happened is around July of last year we received a cease & desist for using the name “Spooky’s House of Jump Scares” because a company called “Spooky House Studios” is trying to get the trademark for “Spooky House”. They are mobile developers based in Germany and already have the trademark in the European Union, and demanded we change our name. When this happened we started working with the most excellent lawyer Ryan Morrison who was very sympathetic to our plight. He showed us our options and helped understand associated risks, but unfortunately, being a staff of two who released a free game, we didn’t really have the means to deal with an international legal battle. While the terms of our settlement are confidential, and I have been advised by Ryan to not share anything further, our game will now be titled Spooky’s Jump Scare Mansion. We are currently propagating new builds and new branding out everywhere, and thank you for bearing with us through all of this!

To remind people more about this game. Spooky’s Jump Scare Mansion released back in July 2015 to Steam, and it takes the player through 1000 rooms of progressively worse horrors. It’s starts out cute and adorable, luring the players into a false sense of security. But the deeper you go, the more terrifying the horrors become.  But by that point, you’re interested in the game itself because it’s so unexpected. Last month, they were able to announce plans on updating the menus and save system for the game, along with teasing an Endless Mode was in the works as well. It’s suggested that the lack of updates in the meantime was due to the legal controversy surrounding it.

Specimen 14

  • View history

Specimen 14 is the playable protagonist of Spooky's Jump Scare Mansion .

  • 5 Licensing

Overview [ ]

The protagonist is a history enthusiast who lives in a town near Spooky's mansion, which is a local mystery. One day, the protagonist decided to venture into the house to uncover its history. Even when faced with the many horrors that the house's cute façade conceals, the protagonist always moves forward with determination.

The number of times the axe is swung at certain things determines what ending the player receives. For this, the game uses a counter that increases by 4 for every hit against a minor enemy (like the Violent Deer) and by one for each Specimen 1 whacked. If the counter goes over 20, the Bad Ending will occur. Otherwise, you get the Good Ending.

Endings [ ]

In the Good Ending, Specimen 14 dies in such a "tragic enough" way that he/she turns into a ghost, thus joining Spooky's army. In the Bad Ending, he/she becomes a new specimen; Specimen 14.

In the Joke/A_Rival Ending for the HD Renovation, he/she escapes the mansion and tells everyone about its supposedly empty spaces and lack of substance. Nobody believes them, but they live on.

In The Doll House, the protagonist escapes the mansion after causing its self-destruction. Depending on what ending is attained, they either escape into a doomed world, or bring a peaceful end to the mansion and all of its inhabitants.

Gallery [ ]

Specimen14Axe

  • The image seen in the Bad Ending suggests that the protagonist is young.
  • The White Cat (encountered in Room 410) most likely foreshadows the Bad Ending; the achievement that the player gets from reaching the Bad Ending, It Was Never A Mask , could be related to what the White Cat refers to.
  • As Specimen 7 is "only effective on subjects with a past trauma or mental issues", the protagonist is confirmed to have suffered from at least one of these complications. The protagonist may also have a weak-will, as Specimen 5 also affects him/her, causing hallucinations.
