About this book
Book summary.
An Indie Next List pick, The Bookseller Editor's Pick, and a Library Journal Barbara's Pick, Yangsze Choo's stunning debut, The Ghost Bride , is a startlingly original novel infused with Chinese folklore, romantic intrigue, and unexpected supernatural twists. "One evening, my father asked me if I would like to become a ghost bride..." Though ruled by British overlords, the Chinese of colonial Malaya still cling to ancient customs. And in the sleepy port town of Malacca, ghosts and superstitions abound. Li Lan, the daughter of a genteel but bankrupt family, has few prospects. But fate intervenes when she receives an unusual proposal from the wealthy and powerful Lim family. They want her to become a ghost bride for the family's only son, who recently died under mysterious circumstances. Rarely practiced, a traditional ghost marriage is used to placate a restless spirit. Such a union would guarantee Li Lan a home for the rest of her days, but at a terrible price. After an ominous visit to the opulent Lim mansion, Li Lan finds herself haunted not only by her ghostly would-be suitor, but also by her desire for the Lim's handsome new heir, Tian Bai. Night after night, she is drawn into the shadowy parallel world of the Chinese afterlife, with its ghost cities, paper funeral offerings, vengeful spirits and monstrous bureaucracy - including the mysterious Er Lang, a charming but unpredictable guardian spirit. Li Lan must uncover the Lim family's darkest secrets -and the truth about her own family -before she is trapped in this ghostly world forever. Reminiscent of Lisa See's Peony in Love and Amy Tan's The Bonesetter's Daughter , The Ghost Bride is a wondrous coming-of-age story from a remarkable new voice in fiction.

Netflix’s The Ghost Bride Ending, Explained

Boasting an all Malaysian cast, ‘ The Ghost Bride ‘ is a unique Mandarin series that combines elements of both fantasy and romance. Adding to this, it takes you from one world to another and explores Chinese folklore surrounding the afterlife and reincarnation. The local cultural flavor of the show is enough to keep you engaged throughout its runtime, but what makes it even more intriguing is its underlying mysteries. And not to mention, the first season comes to an end with a major cliffhanger.
So if you felt a little lost when the show unraveled all of its puzzling plot points or if you’re simply trying to wrap your head around its ending, just read on further to get a better understanding of everything that happened in its first season.
Plot Summary
Adapted from Malaysian author Yangsze Choo’s novel of the same name, ‘The Ghost Bride’ revolves around the life of a young woman, who gets a proposal to become the ghost bride of the son of a very wealthy family. Although she is very reluctant about it initially, this proposal sets off a series of unfortunate events that eventually force her to comply with it. But the more she plunges deep into the affairs of the royal family, the more she finds herself into a supernatural world where only she can bring order.
Who Killed Tian Ching and Li Lan?

Lin Lan’s world comes crashing down when she unknowingly gets herself involved with the affairs of the Lim family. After refusing the proposal of becoming the “ghost bride” of their deceased son, Lin is haunted by Ching’s ghost. He appears in her nightmares and blackmails her that he will forever haunt her family if she does not accept his proposal.
Meanwhile, her debt-ridden father frantically looks for ways to keep the family afloat and ends up falling gravely ill. Using this to his own advantage, Ching informs her that her father is now in a realm that lies between life and death and is slowly running out of time. He offers her a deal: if she is able to find his murderer before her father is sent to the realm of the dead, he will be able to do something to bring him back to life.
Lin Lan embarks on a mission to find out who murdered the heir of the Lim family and while she’s at it, she runs into a Heavenly Guardian named Er Lang. As a Heavenly Guardian, it is his responsibility to figure out how Ching is taking control over the “Purgatory realm”. So just like Lin Lan, he, too, sets out to explore the depths of the Lim mansion to find any worthy leads.
As Lin Lan gets closer to unraveling the true identity of the mysterious killer, she herself gets murdered and is instantly sent to the “middle realm.” This is where she is asked to make a grim choice: she can either let her father die or she can become Ching’s ghost bride and resurrect her father. For obvious reasons, she chooses the latter and her father wakes up in the real human world while she becomes the Ching’s bride.
In the events that follow, while Er Lang travels to the “middle realm” to help Lin, Tian Bai—Ching’s brother—tries to look for the person who killed his brother. He even discovers arsenic in the room of one of his maids and realizes that she was responsible for the murder. The maid even claims that she killed him because he brutally harassed all the servants of the house and treated no one with respect. With this, everyone ends up assuming that the maid even killed Lin as she was getting really close to solving the mystery behind the murder. This part of the story then takes a back seat.
However, much later in the show, when Tian Bai and Lin’s father discuss all about Lin’s unusual death and the murderer’s intentions behind it, Bai’s fiance, Isabella, accidentally ends up blabbering a very intricate detail of the place where Lin was killed. Isabella tries her best to hide the truth but all of it just further cements Tian Bai’s suspicion. Turns out that she had once cheated on Bai with his brother and Ching had later used this to blackmail her.
Too scared to tell Bai about it, she decided to kill Ching. Later when Lin started getting involved in the case and got too close to solving the mystery, Isabella was forced to get her out-of-the-way as well. However, if you think about it, Lin was attacked by Isabella only because Ching forced her to delve into the personal matters of his family. So it isn’t Isabella who tries to kill her, but it’s Ching.
The Ending: The Sacrifice

Back in the Underworld, Lin Lan and Er Lang attempt to expose all of Ching’s wrongdoings to the legal authorities who run the place. They use Ching’s textless heavenly scripts to get in touch with one of the judges of the Underworld and invite him to meet them at an upcoming party at Ching’s mansion. Not everything goes as planned and their whole plotting against Ching backfires on them. After they get captured by Ching and are almost killed by him, it is Lin’s dead mother who gets there to save them.
Now, every person who ends up in the Underworld seems to be affected by a curse. This curse poisons their blood and slowly soars through their bodies. Even when Lin’s father was in the Underworld, his veins were turning black because of the curse and Lin was expected to save him before the curse took over his entire body. So this curse is more or less of ticking bomb. If a human is able to return to the real world before the curse completely takes over, he/she will be saved from death. You might be able to recall that Lin ends up taking the curse onto herself just to save her father from it and this itself explains the ending of the first season.
When Lin almost gets consumed by the curse, Er Lang decides to do something to save her from it. Lin later wakes up in the human realm and gets back to living her old life. And just when she’s about to get married to Tian Bai, Er Lang appears and assures her that he is still doing just fine. He reveals it to her that he ended up sacrificing his Heavenly Guardian promotion to save her life but the end of the season suggests that he was lying. In the closing scene, Er Lang lifts up his sleeve and reveals that now he has been affected by the curse.
So clearly, just to save Lin’s life, Er Lang took the curse onto himself. This could very well be a cue for the next season in which Er Lang and Lin will again embark on another adventure in the dark Underworld to now save Lang’s life. Or it could simply be a representation of how much Er Lang loves her and is even willing to give up on his life just to make sure that she’s able to live.

THE GHOST BRIDE
by Yangsze Choo ‧ RELEASE DATE: Aug. 6, 2013
Choo’s multifaceted tale is sometimes difficult to follow with its numerous characters and subplots, but the narrative is so...
A young woman risks giving up the ghost as she roams the afterlife in Choo’s fascinating debut set in 1893 colonial Malaya.
Young Li Lan’s family was once rich and respected, but since her mother succumbed to smallpox when she was 4, her father, scarred from his own near-fatal struggle with the illness, has squandered the family fortune in a haze of opium. But she’s still shocked and disturbed when her father asks her if she’ll consent to become a ghost bride to the dead son of Malacca’s wealthiest family, the Lims. Marriage to a dead man isn’t exactly what Li Lan had in mind when she dreamed of her future, but after a visit to the Lim mansion, she does, indeed, dream of the dead son. Actually, the dreams are more nightmares since Lim Tian Ching is pretty creepy and persistent in his pursuit of Li Lan. He also informs Li Lan that his cousin, Tian Bai, the current heir—to whom she’s attracted—murdered him. The dreams, which haven’t exactly been conducive to a good night’s sleep, take a toll on Li Lan’s health, and she finally admits to her amah that she’s being visited by ghosts. Her amah takes Li Lan to a medium, who supplies her with potions. After taking more than the recommended dosage, Li Lan’s spirit leaves her near-lifeless body and enters the land of the dead and the near-dead, where she finds that most ghosts are pretty rude and uncivil. As she attempts to discover the true nature of Lim Tian Ching’s death, Li Lan enlists the assistance of a selfish spirit named Fan who guides her to the Plains of the Dead. Her investigation into the Lim household is fraught with danger as Li Lan’s spirit becomes weaker and she tries to avoid vicious ox-headed demons, Lim Tian Ching and other ghosts who wish her harm. But she’s not totally alone: A mysterious stranger in a broad-brimmed hat, an elderly-appearing servant and a cool steed help her.

THE NIGHTINGALE
by Kristin Hannah ‧ RELEASE DATE: Feb. 3, 2015
Still, a respectful and absorbing page-turner.
Hannah’s new novel is an homage to the extraordinary courage and endurance of Frenchwomen during World War II.
In 1995, an elderly unnamed widow is moving into an Oregon nursing home on the urging of her controlling son, Julien, a surgeon. This trajectory is interrupted when she receives an invitation to return to France to attend a ceremony honoring passeurs : people who aided the escape of others during the war. Cut to spring, 1940: Viann has said goodbye to husband Antoine, who's off to hold the Maginot line against invading Germans. She returns to tending her small farm, Le Jardin, in the Loire Valley, teaching at the local school and coping with daughter Sophie’s adolescent rebellion. Soon, that world is upended: The Germans march into Paris and refugees flee south, overrunning Viann’s land. Her long-estranged younger sister, Isabelle, who has been kicked out of multiple convent schools, is sent to Le Jardin by Julien, their father in Paris, a drunken, decidedly unpaternal Great War veteran. As the depredations increase in the occupied zone—food rationing, systematic looting, and the billeting of a German officer, Capt. Beck, at Le Jardin—Isabelle’s outspokenness is a liability. She joins the Resistance, volunteering for dangerous duty: shepherding downed Allied airmen across the Pyrenees to Spain. Code-named the Nightingale, Isabelle will rescue many before she's captured. Meanwhile, Viann’s journey from passive to active resistance is less dramatic but no less wrenching. Hannah vividly demonstrates how the Nazis, through starvation, intimidation and barbarity both casual and calculated, demoralized the French, engineering a community collapse that enabled the deportations and deaths of more than 70,000 Jews. Hannah’s proven storytelling skills are ideally suited to depicting such cataclysmic events, but her tendency to sentimentalize undermines the gravitas of this tale.

ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE
by Anthony Doerr ‧ RELEASE DATE: May 6, 2014
Doerr captures the sights and sounds of wartime and focuses, refreshingly, on the innate goodness of his major characters.
Doerr presents us with two intricate stories, both of which take place during World War II; late in the novel, inevitably, they intersect.
In August 1944, Marie-Laure LeBlanc is a blind 16-year-old living in the walled port city of Saint-Malo in Brittany and hoping to escape the effects of Allied bombing. D-Day took place two months earlier, and Cherbourg, Caen and Rennes have already been liberated. She’s taken refuge in this city with her great-uncle Etienne, at first a fairly frightening figure to her. Marie-Laure’s father was a locksmith and craftsman who made scale models of cities that Marie-Laure studied so she could travel around on her own. He also crafted clever and intricate boxes, within which treasures could be hidden. Parallel to the story of Marie-Laure we meet Werner and Jutta Pfennig, a brother and sister, both orphans who have been raised in the Children’s House outside Essen, in Germany. Through flashbacks we learn that Werner had been a curious and bright child who developed an obsession with radio transmitters and receivers, both in their infancies during this period. Eventually, Werner goes to a select technical school and then, at 18, into the Wehrmacht, where his technical aptitudes are recognized and he’s put on a team trying to track down illegal radio transmissions. Etienne and Marie-Laure are responsible for some of these transmissions, but Werner is intrigued since what she’s broadcasting is innocent—she shares her passion for Jules Verne by reading aloud 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea . A further subplot involves Marie-Laure’s father’s having hidden a valuable diamond, one being tracked down by Reinhold von Rumpel, a relentless German sergeant-major.

About the author, from the back cover.
A wondrous coming-of-age story infused with Chinese folklore, romantic intrigue, adventure, and fascinating, dreamlike twists
Malaya, 1893 Li Lan, the daughter of a genteel but bankrupt Chinese family, has few prospects. But fate intervenes when she receives a proposal from the wealthy and powerful Lim family. They want her to become a ghost bride for the family's only son, who died under mysterious circumstances. Rarely practiced, ghost marriages are often meant to placate a restless spirit. Such a union would guarantee Li Lan a comfortable home for the rest of her days, but at what cost?
As she reluctantly considers the offer, Li Lan is unwillingly drawn into the shadowy parallel world of the Chinese afterlife, with its ghost cities and vengeful spirits. There Li Lan must uncover the Lim family's darkest secrets—and the truth about her own family—before she is trapped in this ghostly world forever.

Ghostly Brides and Bridegrooms
It’s nearly Valentine’s Day and love is in the air. But before you tie the knot with your beloved, you might want to make absolutely sure they are still among the living. For centuries, ghostly brides and bridegrooms have been common figures in folklore across cultures and have since worked their way into ghost stories and Gothic literature. From folk ballads of the eighteenth century to YA novels of the twenty-first, here are a few of my favorite nuptial specters:
“Sweet William’s Ghost”
This classic English folk ballad was recorded in Allan Ramsay’s The Tea-Table Miscellany in 1740 and Thomas Percy’s Reliques of Ancient English Poetry in 1765. Many variations on the lyrics exist, but you can read Percy’s version here . In the narrative, a young woman named Margaret is home alone when the ghost of her true love William comes to the door, pleading with Margaret to give him her “faith and troth” and thus relieve him of his vow to marry her. Margaret refuses, insisting instead that they go to the church and get married, despite William’s protests that he is dead. In some versions of the song, she insists upon a kiss—which William warns would kill her—or upon receiving some knowledge of the afterlife. Margaret follows her spectral love around until the sun comes up, whereupon William vanishes and Margaret drops dead (in some versions, upon his grave). The song is considered to be part of an entire genre of “Specter Bridegroom” narratives in folk ballads, which generally serve as warnings against either being tricked by spirits or letting one’s grief lead to one’s own death.
“Lenore” by Gottfried August Bürger

This 1774 poetic ballad by the German poet Gottfried August Bürger elaborates on the simple tale of the earlier folk song. You can read Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s translation of the poem here . As in the folk ballad, the ghost’s name is William, though his lover’s name is now Lenore. When Lenore discovers that her love has not returned with the rest of the king’s army, she is so distraught that she blasphemes against God and wishes for death. That night, William arrives on horseback and tells Lenore he means to carry her off to be married before the break of day. Eagerly, Lenore jumps up behind him on the horse and they ride at a terrifying pace through the night. Willam proclaims “ die Todten reiten schnell ” (“the dead travel fast”), a line that Bram Stoker would later quote in his vampire novel Dracula . The lovers reach the churchyard just as the sun comes up, and the horse’s rider is revealed to be not William but skeletal Death with his scythe. Lenore dies surrounded by the churchyard’s ghosts, in punishment for her blasphemy and her reckless devotion to the dead. But the final line gives hope that her soul may go to heaven.
“The Skeleton Priest” by Charlotte Dacre
Charlotte Dacre is perhaps best known (when known at all) for her 1806 Gothic novel Zofloya , but a year previously she published a collection of poems titled Hours of Solitude . In this collection is the poem “The Skeleton Priest,” yet another incarnation of the ghostly bridegroom as cautionary tale. In the poem, which you can read online here , a woman named Irene has set out in the middle of a stormy night to elope with her lover Orlando. As Irene rushes along, another woman appears to her, covered in blood and holding a skull. This ominous figure warns Irene that if she continues on her journey, it may end in her death—adding that Orlando was actually already married and has committed a grave sin. Irene dismisses the specter’s words and hurries to Orlando, who brings her by boat to a cavern for the wedding ceremony. Upon their arrival, the priest performing their nuptials reveals himself to be a skeleton and announces that Irene has married not Orlando but Death himself.
The Dybbuk by S. Ansky

We’ve seen English and German examples so far, but how about Yiddish? The Dybbuk, or Between Two Worlds is a famous play written for the Yiddish theater by Jewish playwright S. Ansky. It premiered at the Elyseum Theatre in Warsaw in 1920 and has since been adapted into opera, ballet, and film, most notably the 1937 classic Yiddish film by Michał Waszyński. The story draws on legends of the dybbuk, a malicious spirit from Jewish folklore that possesses the living. In this tale, a young woman named Leah was betrothed before her birth to the son of her father’s close friend, Khanan. But when Leah’s father announces that he intends to marry Leah to another man, Khanan drops dead. On her wedding day, the ceremony is disrupted when Leah shoves her groom away and shouts out in a man’s voice: “You buried me!” Leah has been possessed by Khanan’s dybbuk, and he cannot be exorcized until justice has been restored. Ultimately, a rabbinic court absolves Leah’s father of his vow and exorcizes the dybbuk in a dramatic ceremony. But Leah acknowledges that Khanan is the man she truly loves and leaves her living bridegroom behind to join Khanan in death.

Sweden’s ‘queen of Noir’ Camilla Läckberg accused of using a ghostwriter
Crime novelist has been forced to deny claims that she tricked readers into buying books she didn’t write herself
It is a gripping detective story typical of the queen of Nordic noir, leaving fans pondering the ethics of relationships and the dirty secrets of people with power and influence.
But for once, bestselling crime novelist Camilla Läckberg is not the author of this particular literary whodunnit, but its protagonist.
Läckberg, a star in her native Sweden who has been hailed as the country’s answer to Agatha Christie for her output of thrillers, kids’ stories and cookbooks, last week had to deny that she had tricked her admirers into buying books that were not written by her, after data analysis suggested she had used unattributed ghostwriters for some of her recent novels.
For an article in online magazine Kvartal , which became the talk of literary Sweden at this month’s Gothenburg book fair, journalist Lapo Lappin ran Läckberg’s novels through a “stylographic” data tool, which counts the most common words in a text, processes them using statistical methods and then compiles the results in a diagram.
The tool found a consistency of style in the mystery novels set in her hometown of Fjällbacka that first made Läckberg’s name, centred around husband-and-wife detective duo Erica Falck and Patrik Hedström. A more recent series of revenge thrillers, however, was mapped on a different corner of its diagram altogether.
Kvartal’s journalist fed books by Sweden’s eight bestselling crime writers into another forensic linguistics tool, JGAAP – the same AI-powered programme that in 2013 revealed Harry Potter novelist JK Rowling to have authored the crime novel The Cuckoo’s Calling under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith.
The programme noted a marked similarity between the style of Läckberg’s revenge novels The Golden Cage (2019) and Wings of Silver (2020) and the output of fellow crime writer Pascal Engman, who has worked as Läckberg’s editor at publishing house Forum. With another short novel, 2021’s Kvinnor utan nåd ( Women Without Mercy ), the programme identified Engman as the sole author.

“The overall conclusion from the data analysis strongly favours the ghostwriter theory,” claimed the article in Kvartal .
Rumours about Läckberg’s use of ghostwriters had preceded the article, first fuelled by Håkan Lindgren’s 2021 novel Ghostwriter, in which fictional crime queen “Milli Månsson” delegates her works to another novelist. Confronted with the theory in interviews, Läckberg had previously insisted that Engman worked only as her editor, “and nothing more than that”.
As the new claims hit Swedish headlines last week, the novelist took to Instagram to suggest the investigation into her work had been born out of literary snobbery.
“They say I am not a good enough ‘stylist’ and therefore of course do not deserve my success and so many readers,” she wrote in a post on Wednesday. “What they lack in that equation is that a writer should first and foremost be a STORYTELLER!”
In an earlier post, she had written “I have many times openly and publicly praised Pascal for helping me write in a way that was new to me”, saying she had needed Engman’s help to find a new voice for her new series of “Faye” revenge novels, which includes The Golden Cage and Wings of Silver . “It’s not a secret by any means. And obviously I have succeeded very well.”
Her post did not directly rebut the AI programme’s findings about the authorship of Women Without Mercy , and Läckberg’s publisher did not respond to a query asking if she categorically ruled out having used a ghostwriter for the short book.
Engman has strongly denied the accusation that he has ever worked as more than an editor on Läckberg’s books, telling Kvartal : “Anyone who has published a book knows that it is an editor’s job to work with the author’s text in various ways. For the sake of clarity, I strongly refute what you are insinuating.”
But the magazine’s claims have started a wider debate about Swedish publishing’s handling of its most successful export. Some critics have argued that the enormous global demand for Scandi noir means readers cannot realistically expect every word to be written by the author named on the cover. Others disagree.

“If I buy a book by a certain author I want it to be written by that author,” journalist Lasse Winkler told broadcaster Sveriges Radio. “Of course the experience of reading the book may be just as interesting, perhaps even more interesting. But as a consumer I expect something, because I have a relationship with this particular author. So it becomes a moral issue.”
Literary collaborations have become increasingly accepted in crime writing in recent years. Since the death in 2004 of Stieg Larsson, author of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo , his “Millennium” series has been continued by crime writers David Lagercrantz and Karin Smirnoff. Bestselling American author James Patterson regularly collaborates with other writers to keep up an output of several books per year.
The difference, said Kvartal ’s Lappin, was that those books credited their co-authors. “James Patterson is very open about the fact that he provides the plots, and other authors provide the words,” he said. “I can see the benefits of that approach. If an author were to merely credit their ghostwriter with a thank-you note at the back, that strikes me as false.”
