Check Out the Most Haunted Hotels in New Orleans

For Halloween or year-round fun, check out these five haunted hotels in New Orleans where you may get a chance to mingle with the paranormal.

Oct. 5 2023, Published 5:02 p.m. ET

Around Halloween , if you don’t have kids to take trick-or-treating or are not crazy about costumes, you may want to take a spooky adventure and stay with the spirits in a haunted hotel.

New Orleans is probably one of the best cities in the U.S. to find a haunted hotel. The city has many haunted hotels, most of which are located in the French Quarter. Here is our list of five supposedly haunted hotels in New Orleans .

Hotel Monteleone

The Carousel Bar at Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans.

Located on the corner of Royal and Iberville in the French Quarter, Hotel Monteleone is said to be haunted by several ghosts. Guests have reported seeing shadows of children playing or couples walking in the hallways.

According to the hotel website, the International Society of Paranormal Research detected several entities during a stay in 2003. One of the ghosts they met was toddler Maurice Begere , who died in the hotel during the late 1800s. It’s said that Maurice haunts the 14th floor of the hotel, and several people, including his mother, have seen him.

Dauphine Orleans Hotel

The Dauphine Orleans Hotel opened in 1969, and the hotel bar is located on the former site of a bordello known as May Baily’s. May Baily’s was the first licensed brothel in New Orleans, per the Dauphine Orleans Hotel website. The specters seen at the hotel include women who once worked there as sex workers and their male patrons.

One ghostly woman seen wandering the hotel halls wearing a wedding dress is said to be Millie Baily, May Baily’s sister. As the story goes, Millie’s fiance was shot on the day they were supposed to be married, per the Wandering Crystal blog.

Le Pavillon

Opened in 1907, the Le Pavillon Hotel is reportedly haunted by about 100 ghosts, per Haunted Rooms . The land the hotel sits on is believed to be a “ portal to the spiritual realm ,” according to Wandering Crystal .

The ghosts at the hotel like to make their presence known, and several guests have reported spectral figures standing at the foot of their beds. If the idea of a ghost in your room makes you uneasy, then you’ll want to avoid room 930, which is supposedly haunted by a woman who was hit and killed by a carriage in front of the hotel in the 1840s, per New Orleans Ghosts .

The Pontchartrain Hotel

The Pontchartrain Hotel is located outside of the French Quarter in New Orleans’ Garden District. Of the almost 25 ghosts that haunt the Pontchartrain Hotel are two sisters who lived on the 11th floor of the building in 1927. According to the Cajun Encounters Tour Company website, the sisters died in a 1927 fire set by one of the sisters trying to kill the other. The fire also killed a married couple, who are said to haunt the hotel’s 9th floor.

Lafitte Guest House

A hospital once sat where the Lafitte Guest House is now in the French Quarter. The hospital burned down in 1809, but some of its former patients' spirits remain. One of those former patients is a young girl named Marie, who died of yellow fever in room 21 of the hotel.

Per Haunted Rooms , she has appeared to several guests, sometimes in the room mirror or to other children visiting the hotel. Marie's broken-hearted mother supposedly died in the same room, and hotel guests have reported hearing a woman crying.

The Mortuary, New Orleans Nightmare set opening dates for 2022 Halloween season

NEW ORLEANS (NOLA WEEKEND) - Two New Orleans-area haunted houses have set opening dates for the 2022 Halloween season.

In Jefferson Parish, New Orleans Nightmare is set to open to thrill-seekers on Sept. 23, haunted house producers announced on Facebook.

New Orleans Nightmare returns for its fifth year since taking over the former House of Shock location near the Huey P. Long Bridge.

For 2022, the haunt will feature three new attractions to freak out horror fans: Outcast Carnival, The Bloodrite and Chop House.

In Outcast Carnival, guests will get spooked by rabid sideshow performers, while the Bloodrite features voodoo-inspired themes, haunted house producers say. The third attraction, Chop House, will bring guests face-to-face with a chainsaw-wielding criminal outcast inside an old meat processing plant.

New Orleans Nightmare is one of 15 national attractions produced by Thirteenth Floor Entertainment Group, a Halloween-inspired entertainment company.

Thrill-seekers can also prepare for the Mortuary Haunted Mansion to open this season starting Sept. 24.

This year, the Mid-City attraction, which was actually once a funeral parlor and crematorium, marks a 150th-anniversary milestone. Since converting into a haunted house in 2007 , the grand Victorian mansion at the end of Canal Street, owned and operated by special effects expert Jeff Borne, has grown into a New Orleans Halloween tradition.

For 2022, the haunted house debuts a new theme called “The House That Fear Built,” with the website reflecting on its “greatest hits” of haunts inspiring fear over the years. “Now, the house is alive as ancient and evil spirits that have lain dormant for so long begin to stir once more,” the website says in reference to this year’s plot.

New Orleans Nightmare opens for tours on Sept. 23, 24 and 30. Then, the attraction opens Oct. 1-2, Oct. 6-9, Oct. 13-16 and Oct. 19-31. General admission tickets for the attraction start at $24.99, with pricing subject to change and with additional fees for fast pass, skip-the-line and VIP add-ons. See the dates and hours of operation here .

The Mortuary Haunted Mansion opens for tours on Sept. 24 and 30. Then, the attraction opens Oct. 1, Oct. 7 - 9, Oct. 13 - 16, Oct. 20 - 23 and Oct. 25 - 31, with an additional blackout night on Nov. 5. General admission tickets start at $25 before 7 p.m. or $30 for tours starting at 7 p.m. or later. At the end of Canal Street sits one of the most haunted houses in New Orleans, and it just so happens to be one of the most popular thrill-seeking attractions in the city. Since opening in 2007, The Mortuary has been ranked as one of the best haunted houses, scaring hundreds of brave souls every fall. While it’s certainly an adrenaline-inducing experience, you may be surprised to learn that this haunted house is actually a haunted house. It’s been featured on several ghost hunting shows including the Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures, and it’s quite possible you may just have a paranormal experience as you make your way through the Hollywood-level theatrics.

Disney’s Haunted Mansion filming locations: Where was the movie filmed?

Haunted Mansion is now streaming on Disney+. But just where was this wild comedy based on the classic Disney attraction filmed?

Since 1969, the Haunted Mansion has been one of Disney’s most iconic rides. Replicated at every Disney park worldwide, the classic Mansion has guests going through a spooky haunted house of 999 spirits. It was adapted into a 2003 movie starring Eddie Murphy.

The 2023 film has Rosario Dawson as a woman moving herself and her son into a New Orleans mansion only to find it’s haunted. They turn to a troubled filmmaker (LaKeith Stanfield), a priest (Owen Wilson), a psychic (Tiffany Haddish) and a scholar (Danny DeVito) to discover the secrets of the mansion and the twisted Hatbox Ghost (Jared Leto) ready to unleash some evil.

The movie is packed with scores of effects and a gothic New Orleans setting, but where was it really filmed?

Where was the Haunted Mansion movie filmed?

Per the official New Orleans website, much of the movie was shot on location in the Big Easy. True, the interiors of the mansion were soundstages that could handle all the special effects, but the exterior utilized the famous Buckner Mansion in the Garden District. That makes total sense, as the original Disneyland Haunted Mansion was based on the very location in the city.

Several other New Orleans locations were used, from Lafayette Cemetary for a jazz funeral to Jackson Square. There’s also famous watering holes like the Napolean House or Lafitte’s Blacksmith Tavern. Royal Street was also used for the home of Stanfield’s character and Tulane University “played itself” as the spot for DeVito’s character.

The movie did a good job integrating the New Orleans locations into the fun and making the Mansion truly feel alive for a fun watch on Disney+.

Staff in uniform ruined the entire experience. We were looking for something creepy, but the staff followed us every step of the way, pushing us to move along every 2 minutes, and threatening to kick us out if we did not move any faster. It took away from the scary part of the experience. This is NOT creepy, and NOT scary. Bored, uninterested and rude staff every step of the way. The reason for 2 stars instead of 1 is that they had a few cool visual effects. Never again!

This will be my last year going to the mortuary haunted house. To start out when we went in the general admission line they were playing pop music including sweet but psycho and old time road. Which is fine but people this is a HAUNTED house. Totally killed the vibe! ONE "scare" actor came out for about 3 minutes out of the 40+ mins we were in line. I absolutely love haunted houses and usually have a great time getting scared with jumps and screaming but I screamed ONCE. One time in the whole night. The house lacked cast and was really boring to be honest. There was also no decorations outside like usual??? Not to mention it's $30 a person now and when it was $20/person it was so much better! Don't waste your money here they definitely failed to scare this year!

The Haunted Mortuary is an awesome place to visit. In the fall they put on a stellar haunted house that will surely scare just about anyone. If their fake ghosts don't scare you, then maybe their real ones will! The Mortuary is verified as actually haunted by the ISPR (International Society of Paranormal Research) as seen on TV.   It's recently been under renovation to make it even more interesting than ever. The people that run this place are really cool. Check out their website for more info.

Well, being from Florida and having access to Halloween horror nights and howl O scream at the major theme parks every year I'll be the first to tell you the mortuary absolutely measures up to both. I went on Friday night and the password was "cyborg" granting my party $15 admission. The house is large, the costumes and props are great and the scares are very good. My girlfriend and brother really enjoyed the mortuary and were very happy with the experience and would do it again. The house is much longer than any avg house in universal studios and close but not better than the "alone " House at busch gardens. However these parks run over $100 each easily per person . For the money the mortuary def did not disappoint.

Wasn't too scary, most of the scary parts are just when they try and work you up and trick you into thinking that it's something it's not... There is a section on the tour where there are inflatable dark walls that you have to push/feel your way through. You walk single file for the entire tour, actors never touch you, but do a very good job at getting in your face. There are different levels of the building that you go on, they have workers with flashlights that help make sure you safely get your way up and down any stairs (about two sets of stairs in different sections of the tour). At one point you are crossing a minor bridge that easily shakes--but there are handles every now and then. Very graphic with TONS of blood and guts! Would not recommend for children. Tickets are $25, and for the experience it is definitely worth it! 100% better than a school haunted house. Our tour lasted about 10-15 minutes. One thing that I REALLY liked was the fact that there are tons and tons of security guards, police man, guards and patrol people with radios that keep everything in check! :) I felt 100% safe. If you are big into scary, then this would be a 7 on the scale of 1-10... If you're a little bit on the scaredy cat side, then this would be a 9 out of a 10! :) really fun. Do expect a wait in line. We waited approximately 25-30 minutes before getting into the building.

If I had know what I was getting for 40 dollars, I would have strolled down Bourbon St and drank it away instead. The decorations were the only plus. We started with a group of five and ended up sandwiched between 20 people because they don't take the initiative to space people out. I've been to MANY haunted houses, and they all know that part of the experience is isolation. This place just pumps you in and out. They also have fun things for the people that don't pay for express passes to do before the House, but not the people that pay more. They had like a GD Dj and were like eating bugs and I was standing in line with my thumb up my a$$. Buyers remorse is putting it lightly.

I went here; it was really scary, some of it was the unexpected scary that you would not think this section was scary but it was scary!  Other parts I thought would be scary, and yep they were scary!  Should one want to be scared but not totally freaked out, this is a good thing to do!

Escape room was an exciting experience with coworkers. The zombie in the zombie room was scary AF and made for an unique thrill.

I've been wanting to go to this place for years. I guess you can call me a ghost enthusiast. This year, I finally found some willing participants. The theme however, zombies. Hey, why not? Aren't zombies all the rage these days? So I gathered up some fellow Walking Dead fans and off we went. It was last Saturday (weekend before Halloween). We expected long lines so we splurged for the VIP SKIP THE LINE option (purchased online). Got there at 6:30. Was supposed to open doors at 7:00. Doors didn't open till 7:30. We were out by 8:00. So roughly 30 minutes, maybe less since we didn't get through the door till right after 7:30. Now the fun part of this review. First they allow about 8 people in a room that looks like a parlor. A man dressed in army type garb with a rifle yells at you to keep away from the zombies. Yeah ok, will do. You climb up lots of stairs and down lots of stairs. Uneven floors really play with your mind. Lots of strobes and tight spaces. Claustrophobes beware. I'm one of them but those moments were short lived and manageable. Some moments were too dark to see where you were going. That's when it's important to grab onto the person in front of you. You'll find yourself shuffling more than walking.  Another cleaver way they play on the claustrophobes is the thick, black plastic-like paper blown by fans in both direction so you have to push your way through as it completely engulfs your body. Sounds scary? I haven't even gotten to the zombies. They come at you at the most unexpected times. No touching. They made me jump, scream and laugh.....at myself. Those creatures aren't funny. Hanging body bags and heads in some places. Some I didn't know were real until they were upon me. Amazing! Loved it! Can't wait for next year. Well worth the money spent.

Truly, an entertaining experience. We purchased the VIP, and have enjoyed multiple times going into the Mortuary. The VIP pass is a true bargain allowing unlimited entries and skipping the line. The actors and staff do a great job. We look forward to next year.
