Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom - Phantom Ganon Boss Guide

Clear the Phantom Ganon encounter in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

By Jason Rodriguez on May 12, 2023 at 5:05PM PDT

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Phantom Ganon boss fight takes place during the later portion of the campaign. You'll meet Link's old rival in a challenging and chaotic battle. Here's our guide to help you beat the Phantom Ganon boss fight in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

How to beat Phantom Ganon in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

For the sake of clarity, the Zelda: Phantom Ganon boss fight we detail here is the one that occurs in Hyrule Castle. Although you take him on in the Deku Tree Chasm , that's just but one opponent. The one in Hyrule Castle pits you against five specters.

It can be a hassle since, apart from numerous foes, your own companions don't do a good job handling aggro either. Worse, since they're engaged in melee, you'll end up wading into the thick of the fray if ever you plan on activating their abilities, likely risking a brutal hit. Moreover, since Phantom Ganon is corrupted by the Gloom, any damage you take will also afflict you with the debuff, lowering your max HP by locking down your hearts.

Don't risk activating your Sage companion abilities since that would usually lead to you getting hit hard.

To be fair, though, the encounter itself should be easy enough if you play your cards right. For instance, a shield with a Spring or Time Bomb as the Fuse material lets you leap into the air quickly, which makes for slow-time charged shots with your bow. Likewise, if you can manage to dodge one shade, you can follow up with a Flurry Rush. With a strong weapon, a single sequence can burst down its HP.

If you're having trouble, we did come up with a cheese for the Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Phantom Ganon boss. The idea is to run all the way to the top floor of the sanctum. There, hop on top of the ledge beside the steps. While you're positioned there, there's a possibility that the following can happen:

  • Specters that follow you will sometimes go on the opposite ledge. Due to the distance, they'll only shoot bows, which you can sidestep.
  • Some will teleport on the ledge that you're camping on. If this happens, you can block their initial strike, then hop off to make them teleport, then hop back on.

Standing on the ledge can make teleporting shades end up on the opposite side, forcing them to only fire arrows. Anyone that gets too close will sometimes charge, which you can block. Alternatively, they might just shimmy around and do nothing.

The idea is to mess with their AI, forcing them to only shoot with arrows that can be sidestepped. You may then just snipe them with headshots. This should, hopefully, let you clear the Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Phantom Ganon encounter in Hyrule Castle.

After this, Link and company find out that they need more aid. That leads to The Fifth Sage quest .

The legend of zelda: tears of the kingdom - phantom ganon boss fight guide.

Be prepared the next time Phantom Ganon comes knocking.

Quick Links

What is gloom, find higher ground, summon phantom ganon, spoils of war, where does phantom ganon spawn, story locations.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom introduced many classic elements into the continuity started with Breath of the Wild . Poes, Like Likes, Temples, Sages... And namely, Phantom Ganon . The spectral avatar of evil makes its return in perhaps its most terrifying appearance yet — as a roaming encounter that will ambush Link seemingly at random. Phantom Ganon can appear at any time, so being prepared is a must. This guide will outline information you'll need so Phantom Ganon doesn't put a swift end to Link's adventure.

You'll know you're in for it when the Gloom Spawn spawns, a group of ghostly hands each with a malicious eye in their palm. First things first: don't panic! Make a save . Don't worry — you'll have a few seconds to prepare upon reloading the save before the Gloom spawns back in. The Gloom Hands are arguably the hardest part of the encounter — and yes, this is a multiple phase encounter. The Gloom Hands are fast, and their attacks can, seemingly, bypass your shield . Defeating the Gloom Hands will then cause the big man himself to spawn in — Phantom Ganon. Phantom Ganon is a much simpler fight. Once you make it to Phantom Ganon, you've got the rest of the fight in the bag.

Update by Devin Amlen, 6/9/2023: Much more information on Phantom Ganon and the Gloom Spawn has been discovered since this article's initial publication.

If you've been to the Depths, you'll probably be experienced with Gloom. If not, Gloom is Tears of the Kingdom's equivalent of Malice, coating the ground and walls like a slime. Touching the Gloom will reduce your maximum heart count. The Gloom Hands cover the ground they slither on in gloom, and there's a lot of them, so there's going to be a lot of gloom on the ground.

It's important to make a Gloom-resistant meal and keep it in your inventory in case you run into the Gloom Hands — you can make Gloom-resistant meals by cooking Dark Clumps , which can be acquired through defeating Phantom Ganon or, more easily, acquiring and trading in Poes . It's also a good idea to make meals with Sundelion - Sunny meals will restore hearts lost to Gloom, letting you recover your health.

The Gloom Hands are fast and cannot be outrun on foot. Unless you have a Horse or a Speedy Elixir, you're going to be swarmed and have the life choked out of you quick. It's recommended you try and abuse the Gloom Hand's pathing and get onto a higher-up place so the Gloom Hands can't reach you . This makes the fight almost trivial — the Gloom Hands will be helpless as you take potshots at them. Bomb Flowers are recommended, being able to hit the lot of them all at once. Alternatively, you can also freeze them with a Sapphire Rod or Ice Fruit, then attack them with a charged attack.

Just make sure to finish them off with an area attack — the Gloom Hands will keep respawning until they are all killed.

Mentioned before, defeating the Gloom Hands is not the end of the encounter. After defeating the Gloom Hands, Phantom Ganon will spawn in. Phantom Ganon is much simpler to fight, as he is just one much less mobile enemy. Phantom Ganon can wield multiple different Gloom weapons , from a bow to a spear. Ganon will drop one of these weapons when slain, and the weapons are quite strong — at the cost of draining Link's health while used . Time your dodges carefully and wear down Phantom Ganon's health. If you're in a bind, just run — Phantom Ganon will eventually disappear if you flee.

When defeated, Phantom Ganon will drop several items; the weapon it was carrying, some Dark Clumps, and a Demon King's Bow. The Gloom Weapons, being the Gloom Sword, Gloom Spear, and Gloom Club, are all very powerful weapons that have the Gloom Toll attribute. Using these weapons deals Gloom damage to Link with each hit - it's recommended you either use them on the surface, where Gloom damage will naturally heal, or fuse the weapons onto another , nullifying the Gloom Toll while capitalizing on the weapons' high damage.

The Demon King's Bow , however, is the real prize. The Demon King's Bow is perhaps one of the best bows in the game, having fantastic range, durability, and damage. In particular, the Demon King's Bow's damage scales based on your max hearts - increasing by 2 per heart and maxing out at a whopping 60. That being said, it does consider hearts lost to Gloom as missing, and the Bow's damage may be reduced. The Demon King's Bow does not have the Gloom Toll attribute, so make good use of it while you can!

Though it may appear random, Phantom Ganon and the Gloom Spawn do have scripted spawn locations. The following locations are confirmed to be locations where Gloom Spawn will emerge:

  • Korok Grove - The Depths
  • Mount Lanayru Peak
  • Castle Town, on the West and East sides
  • Top of Crenel Hills
  • Nearby Darunia Lake
  • Tempest Gulch near Skull Lake
  • Sahasra Slope Skyview Tower
  • Ordorac Quarry
  • Akkala Citadel Ruins
  • Tabahl Woods
  • Gerudo Highlands Great Cliffs
  • Lanayru Road, by the East Gate
  • North and South Lomei Labyrinths

...And many more. Phantom Ganon also appears to spawn near major landmarks in Hyrule — the Lost Woods, the Goddess Springs, et cetera. If you're walking around near such a location, be on guard — you may be ambushed by the Gloom Hands. Phantom Ganon will also likely respawn after a Blood Moon, so keep that in mind. If you'd like an interactive map that can show you the locations where Gloom Spawn can appear, please refer to this interactive map courtesy of Zeldadungeon.com .

There are some points in the game where you must fight Phantom Ganon. In particular, two stand out - one encounter at Korok Forest , and one at Hyrule Castle . When you first enter Korok Forest, it will be cursed and empty. By diving into the Deku Tree Chasm, you'll enter a small arena where Gloom Spawn will appear. After dealing with them and defeating Phantom Ganon, Korok Forest will be restored. The Deku Tree will give you some story quests involving the Master Sword if you haven't gotten it already.

Secondly, and most importantly, you will encounter Phantom Ganon during the skirmish at Hyrule Castle after recruiting the four Sages. After chasing the evil spirit around Hyrule Castle, you'll eventually fight in the Sanctum - thankfully without having to deal with Gloom Spawn this time. However, Phantom Ganon has back up in the form of duplicate Phantom Ganons. Just keep calm and time your dodges carefully - when you win, you'll even receive a free Heart Container!

Items Ontainable

How to defeat phatom ganon & tips.

ファントムガノン

  • Perfect Dodge to Flurry Rush to deal damage
  • Attacking from a distance using a bow is an option
  • Try not to get in contact with the Gloom └Food with Sundelion can be used to heal

Perfect Dodge to Flurry Rush To Deal Damage

Phatom Ganon's attacks are simple. But, if you use Melee attacks as usual, there is a risk to step on the Gloom. So, use Perfect Dodge and Flurry Rush to deal damage. Vertical attacks such as stabbing and swinging down can be dodged by sidestep. Horizontal attacks such as sweeping attacks can be avoided by backflipping.

Black Moblin Sledge Is Recommended

Black Moblin Sledge increases the damage during Flurry Rush. Defeating Black Moblin in front of the Ulri Mountain Skyview Tower will drop both items required (Royal Halberd and Black Mobli Horn).

Attacking From Distance Using Bow Is An Option

If you're inconsistent with Perfect Dodge and Flurry Rush, use a bow to attack and deal damage from a distance. Use items such as Bomb Flower to fuse and increase bow damage. Also, take advantage of updraft and steps to trigger Slow Motion.

Try Not To Get In Contact With The Gloom

Gloom is generated underneath Phantom Ganon. Getting in contact with Gloom will cause the Heart to flash and after a few seconds, reduces the max hearts. Try not to get in contact with Gloom and get out as soon as possible if you accidentally touch it.

Food With Sundelion Can Be Used To Heal

Reduced maximum Heart can be healed by eating food with Sundelion. It is recommended to bring some before fighting Ganon.

Recommended Weapons For Beating Phantom Ganon

Raise the attack power using the fuse.

Weapons have a low attack power, and it takes a lot of time to defeat enemies. It is easier to fight by attaching materials such as Monster's Horns to weapons with Fuse to raise their attack power.

The Attack Power of Master Sword Doubles

Master Sword doubles the attack power in the battles with Ganondorf and Phantom Ganon. It is recommended to Fuse it to raise its attack power, if if you do not have any of the above weapons.

Master sword during the battle with Phantom Ganon

▲The blue glow of Master Sword is a sign of awakening, which means the attack power is doubled, allowing for higher damage.

Crisis at Hyrule Castle Walkthrough

How to Beat the Phantom Ganon

Perform flurry rush.

Counterattacking Phantom Ganon with a Flurry Rush is the easiest and fastest way to defeat him. Simply dodge his first strike, then counterattack when the Flurry Rush prompt appears.

A good way to master Flurry Rush is to practice it on weaker enemies. You can try practicing with Soldier Constructs on the Sky Islands to perfect this combat technique.

How to Flurry Rush, Sneakstrike, and Deal Critical Damage

Avoid Staying Too Far

If you move too far away from Phantom Ganon, he will close in on you with a slash that may be difficult to deflect. Always stay right in front of Phantom Ganon, outside of his Gloom effect.

Avoid Phantom Ganon's Gloom

Don

Don't stay too near either, as Phantom Ganon's Gloom effect will reduce your hearts if you stay in it for too long. After you get a few hits in, immediately hop back out. If you do get affected by Gloom, you can use Sundelions in your cooking to make Sunny dishes that cure the Gloom effect and restore your hearts.

New Gloom Status Condition: How to Cure

Prepare Dark Clump and Sundelion Dishes

Eat a Warding Meat Skewer

Food made with Dark Clumps will make the fight so much easier, as their effects protect you from Phantom Ganon's Gloom. These dishes include Warding Meat Skewers , Warding Mushroom Skewer , and Warding Simmered Fruit . Dark Clumps can be obtained from Gloom Hands .

Bring Best Equipment

Best weapons.

The best weapons to use during any Phantom Ganon fights are fused weapons. Materials like Silver Lynel Mace Horn and Silver Lynel Saber Horn can provide massive attack increase to any strong weapons like Fierce Deity Sword .

  • Best Fuse Materials and Weapon Combinations

Best Armor Sets

Zelda TotK - Use Fierce Deity Armor Set

The best way to defeat him is to equip the Fierce Deity Armor Set to gain an Attack Up armor set bonus. In addition, the Fierce Deity Sword has a base attack power of 38, making it a strong weapon to use against bosses. You can obtain the sword in the Cephla Lake Cave while wearing the Fierce Deity Armor Set.

Alternatively, you can also equip the Depths Set when fighting Phantom Ganon. This will help you get extra protection from his gloom damages as it provides Gloom Resistance .

Rush Vertical Swing

Phantom Ganon holds his Gloom Sword up with his right hand and rushes towards your direction with his right foot forward . Dodge to the sides to avoid this attack. Do not perform a backflip as you will take damage when he strikes down.

Spinning Attack

Phantom Ganon holds his sword with two hands to charge up a spin attack and causes his surroundings to pool with Gloom. Perform a backflip to avoid this attack.

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – How To Beat Phantom Ganon

Phantom Ganon is back as a hidden boss in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, but players shouldn't approach the fight the same way they did in the past.

Quick Links

How to summon phantom ganon, how to beat phantom ganon, rewards for defeating phantom ganon.

Players who have made it any decent way into The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom agree that it's got a lot more horror elements than its predecessor. One of these things has been scaring players more than any other new addition to Tears of the Kingdom : the Gloom Hands that can seemingly appear anywhere, out of nowhere.

RELATED: Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - Wind Temple Walkthrough

As difficult as Gloom Hands are to deal with, the real challenge is dealing with what, or rather who, comes after Link defeats them. Indeed, Phantom Ganon appears, returning after being gone from the series for so long. The fight is different than it used to be, though, and Phantom Ganon has a few new tricks up his sleeve – including three variants with different movesets and weapons. Players will find certain abilities and combat skills very useful for this fight, but there are some other preparations that can be made, too.

Phantom Ganon is summoned a few seconds after a patch of Gloom hands, called Gloom Spawn in-game, are defeated by Link . There are a few ways to do this, but arguably the easiest is to simply shoot five Bomb Flowers fused to arrows in the center of the cluster.

The best way to kill Gloom Hands is with a bow from a height, but they will eventually despawn if players spend too long out of their reach.

Either way, Gloom Hands will drop Gloom-related materials for Link to cook and Fuse with, but players shouldn't get too comfy. After all are defeated, a few seconds will pass, then the health bar for Phantom Ganon will fade in as players witness this terrifying hidden boss appear out of nowhere. Phantom Ganon looks very different than it did in the past, now more closely resembling the dehydrated Ganondorf seen in the opening of the game than a floating specter of the Demon King at his full strength.

There are also more versions of Phantom Ganon in Tears of the Kingdom than in other games, though the strategy for defeating each remains mostly the same – one wields a Sword, one wields a Club, and the last wields a Spear. All three variants also use a bow when Link gets out of his reach. In the end, the preparation for fighting Phantom Ganon matters as much as the combat itself, thanks to the Gloom that pools around his feet and attacks that reduce Link's max Hearts.

Phantom Ganon can be encountered in multiple dangerous forms in many different locations , and each uses a suite of different moves that complement their weapons. With the sword or club equipped, Phantom Ganon has access to both vertical and horizontal attacks, while the spear-wielding version can only attack forwards and vertically.

RELATED: Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - How To Beat Talus

This makes the spear-wielding Phantom Ganon a bit easier than the others, as players can simply lock on and circle around to avoid just about every attack. But no matter its form, this boss isn't to be approached lightly, and it's important that Link takes the time to hunt down ingredients, cook Gloom-resistant foods, and use Gloom-resistant armor.

Preparing To Fight Phantom Ganon

It's highly recommended to have at least eight hearts for the Phantom Ganon boss battle, as his hits can deal an enormous amount of damage quickly. Some of Phantom Ganon's attacks will remove the player's maximum Hearts , and the pool around his feet will slowly sap Hearts, too. Having eight gives players a little bit of breathing room in the fight, but it's never a bad idea to bring some Fairies along , just in case.

The best armor for fighting Phantom Ganon is the Of The Depths set, available from a number of Poe statues throughout the nearly-inescapable Depths . The first one players come across via a questline gives access to the Tunic for 150 Poes, which gives a single Heart of protection. It's not much, but it's enough to signal players to move out of Gloom.

The best weapon type for Phantom Ganon is a spear , as it gives Link lots of space to avoid Gloom and attack rapidly in moments of opportunity. But players who plan to Flurry Rush rather than attack him directly should just use whatever their strongest available weapon is. Either way, make sure it packs a punch, or it'll be a long fight.

When cooking food for the fight , cook with Gloom-resistant ingredients like Dark Clumps to create food that gives Link some breathing room around Gloom. Use Sundelions in meals to make food that restores Hearts taken away by Gloom – Dark Clumps are precautionary, but Sundelions are good for when Link has already been affected by Gloom in the middle of battle.

Strategies To Beat Phantom Ganon

For all three types of Phantom Ganons in Tears of the Kingdom , players should make sure they have a strong, fast weapon (something with at least 30 power), be prepared to move a lot, and possibly spend time mastering the Flurry Rush .

Using Flurry Rush on Phantom Ganon is essential for getting lots of hits in without being affected by the Gloom around him, as it won't build during the slow-motion attack sequence. He can be hit at all times, of course, but actually getting close enough without sacrificing Hearts is tough.

RELATED: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom – Most Dangerous Enemies (Outside Of Bosses)

Practice the Flurry Rush on weaker enemies to get the timing down, and learn to dodge to the side for vertical swings and backward for horizontal ones. Both the sword-wielding and club-swinging Phantom Ganon bosses will use a mix of horizontal and vertical swings , while the spear-wielding one's jabs and vertical slashes can be dodged to the side every time .

Eat Gloom-resistant food and keep Sundelion food at the ready to restore lost Hearts, and don't get greedy when going for normal attacks on any of the three Phantom Ganon types. No matter his weapon of choice, attacks can come out of nowhere with unpredictable speed, so be ready to move out of his range at a moment's notice .

After players whittle down Phantom Ganon's relatively large Health bar, he will drop his weapon, bow, and some materials and kneel before Link in defeat. In a plume of purple smoke, he vanishes, leaving behind the Demon King's Bow and Dark Clumps on all versions. However, the melee weapon he drops corresponds to the type of Phantom Ganon Link fought – either the Gloom Sword, Gloom Club, or Gloom Spear .

The Demon King's Bow increases its own damage based on how many Hearts Link currently has full and has a base value of 12 damage – the more hearts Link has, the more damage it does.

The Gloom Sword, Club, and Spear have the Gloom Toll attribute, which takes away Link's max Hearts when damaging enemies. The trade-off for this disastrous effect is incredibly high damage and the ability to be Fused to push damage even higher .

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is available for the Nintendo Switch.

How to Defeat Gloom Hands

In various areas all over Hyrule in Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, a secret enemy awaits. Known as Gloom Spawn (or Gloom Hands), they appear from puddles of gloom without warning, and will quickly swarm you -- proving to be an extremely deadly foe. An enemy almost assuredly designed to instill the same anxiety and fear the Guardians once did, this creature will erupt from those dark puddles and will likely find you before you can understand what's happening - unless you pay attention to the horror movie-esque music that accompanies them. This page contains tips on how to avoid or defeat them, as well how to deal with what to do after defeating them.

Encountering Gloom Spawn Hands

Escaping gloom spawn hands, fighting gloom spawn hands.

TotK GloomHand1.jpg

Much like Breath of the Wild's Guardians, Gloom Spawn are incredibly dangerous opponents that can appear in many parts of Hyrule, both on its surface and in The Depths . They function like other world bosses in the land, and stick to specific areas, including the following areas:

  • Kolomo Ruins Garrison Ruins - South Central Hyrule
  • Forest of Spirits - Great Plateau
  • Lindor's Brow Cave - Hyrule Ridge
  • Mekar Island - Great Hyrule Forest
  • Hyrule Castle Docks

TotK GloomHand2.jpg

When you draw near their lair, a puddle of gloom will appear with little warning, and from it will emerge 5 red glowing hands with eyes. It usually won't be long before they spot you, and they move alarmingly fast. With multiple hands all seeking to grab at you, getting away can be extremely hard.

TotK GloomHand3.jpg

If grabbed, you'll take continual gloom damage that eats away at your maximum hearts, and breaking free will often lead to another one grabbing at you. Even when eating food that gives you temporary extra hearts, the gloom will remove all of them in just a few seconds

While it's possible to take these things out early on, the reality is that the rewards won't be as great as they will much later in the game. Their reward is great, but only if you have a large stockpile of hearts. If you don’t, the weapons you get are only going to take up valuable inventory space. With that in mind...

The first big tip when dealing with Gloom Spawn early on is to run away!

TotK GloomHand4.jpg

Your first instinct when seeing them if not prepared is to find a way out. While Gloom Spawn can move very fast, they can't climb, so you'll want to find high ground where they can't reach you. They still have an impressive reach, and it can be hard to catch a break. Remember that Dazzle Fruit can be used as an effective flash grenade, and tossing one down gives you a few moments to sprint away.

In most locations where Gloom Spawn appear, they’ll actually “despawn” after a set amount of time. This usually only happens once you've gained some distance or higher ground, but it can also happen during a fight. It may look like they randomly die for no reason, as they’ll leave behind a Dark Clump material — but make no mistake, that's not the real end.

Totk GloomHands3.jpg

If you still want to fight them early on, or you're after their loot in the late game, the biggest tip is attack at range, or from high ground when they can't reach you easily. You don’t want to fight these things mano a manos. They take forever to kill, the gloom will quickly reduce your max hearts, and they’ll even respawn if you don’t take them all out at around the same time.

Getting to high ground will often cause them to bunch up together as they try to get at you, giving you the perfect opportunity to hit them with some AOE damage. Bomb flowers work wonders, and can generally do the job in about 5 or 6 hits when paired with a good bow.

Totk GloomHand5.jpg

If you are low on Bomb Arrows, consider stockpiling elemental materials with a larger radius: including Electric Keese Eyes and wings, or Ice Like Stones that can stun and hinder multiple targets at once.

TotK GloomHands5.jpg

You can even utilize gems in a pinch like a Sapphire or Ruby, just be sure you are at an extreme range or you're liable to blast yourself in the process. Magic Rods or Staffs with gems provide a safer alternative, but you'll need to be closer.

TotK GloomHand6.jpg

Once only a few remain, you can try getting in close to whittle them down, and side hop to dodge their lunges, or keep playing it safe and snipe their eyes with regular arrows. and if they don’t, you can usually finish off the remainder with your bow.

Defeating The True Miniboss

TotK GloomGanon.jpg

Once you kill all the hands, you’re not done. Out of the Gloom will spawn a Phantom Ganon, an enemy that will deal massive damage to you if he hits you, as well as reducing your maximum hearts. He has a lot of health and may take a lot of strong weapons to defeat, so prepare accordingly with food buffs and stockpile meals cooked with Sundelion to repair your damaged hearts.

TotK GloomGanon2.jpg

Fortunately, he doesn't move nearly as fast as the Gloom Hands, and is much easier to stay out of reach of. Try to get just close enough to trigger one of his two major melee attacks, which will be either a single vertical or horizontal sword slash, or a charged spin attack. Once you see him start one of these two attacks, just back up out of range, wait for the attack, get in, hit him with one or two strikes, then get back out.

TotK GloomGanon7.jpg

He will summon a puddle of Gloom with him wherever he goes, making staying at close range a risky gambit. However, deal enough damage to him, and the puddle will recede, letting you press your attack for longer.

TotK GloomGanon5.jpg

His most threatening attack will be his dash up strike, because if you dodge right when he gets in your face, he will hit you with his slash. To avoid this, delay your instinct to do a dodge right when he gets close, wait a few beats for him to ready his slash, and then back flip the horizontal swipe or dodge the vertical slash. Doing so at the last second will prompt a Flurry Rush, so swap to your most damaging weapon and unload on him.

TotK GloomGanon4.jpg

If you’re far away from him, he will use a bow to hit you from a distance, but you can get off a headshot to stagger him before this happens. Otherwise, hold your shield up, and wait for him to come back to you.

If he transforms into a little puff of gloom, he will move towards you and slash when he reforms. Same deal as the dash, wait a bit and keep an eye out for when he starts his slash animation, then do a backflip, or if you have the shield durability to withstand it, you can just block it with a shield - or even time a perfect parry to stun him for a few seconds.

Phantom Ganon Rewards

Keep this up and eventually Phantom Ganon will fall, and you’ll be rewarded with a Gloom Sword, a Demon King’s Bow, and several Dark Clumps

The Gloom Sword has a whopping 41 Base Damage, but the heavy cost is that every time you hit something with it, it takes away from your maximum heart count. You can avoid this penalty by fusing it to another weapon, but it makes it super brittle, and won’t last more than a few swings.

The Demon King’s Bow on the other hand will increase in damage the more hearts you have, making it one of the most powerful bows for those with a ton of hearts, but if you don’t, it’s actually pretty weak. Yellow hearts also don’t increase its damage either.

Items Ontainable

How to defeat phatom ganon & tips.

▲The blue glow of Master Sword is a sign of awakening, which means the attack power is doubled, allowing for higher damage.

Gloom Hands, dark red and black hands with an eye in their palm, creep out of a puddle of gloom in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

As you explore Hyrule in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom , you may notice out of place pools of gloom on the surface. As you approach each of them, you’ll see a group of dark hands with an eye in the middle.

The so-called Gloom Hands (also known as “red hands” by players, and officially known as Gloom Spawn by the game) will charge at you with their deceptively fast speed and grab ahold of you, destroying your hearts in the process.

The Gloom Hands are frightening at first — as seen in the Lost Woods and the Korok Forest of gloom — but if you come prepared, you’ll quickly learn that there is nothing to be afraid of. Here’s how to beat them.

Gloom Hands are exactly what they sound like — dark red hands covered in gloom. They are scattered all over Hyrule, but you’ll generally only know you’re going to fight them when it’s too late to turn back.

Link shoots a bomb arrow from higher ground into the middle of five Gloom Hands in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Heading into battle, we recommend you prepare a few items to take them down. Here are some of the best weapons and items to use against Gloom Hands :

  • Bomb flowers
  • Elemental Chuchu jellies
  • Elemental Like stones
  • Elemental Keese eyeballs

As soon as the Gloom Hands begin to creep out of their hole, prepare your weapon of choice. We’ve found that it takes around six bomb flower arrows to defeat all of the hands, but if some are still alive after that, use any of the weapons listed above to take them out. Once you’ve taken them down, a Phantom Ganon will spawn in their place. If you’re up for the challenge, put up your shield and get ready to block!

Tips and tricks to defeat Gloom Hands

A Gloom Hand grabs Link in a Link’s Awakening costume in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Gloom Hands can be tricky to beat even if you come prepared. Here are a few extra tips and tricks to take down the nasty hands found in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom .

  • Climb to higher ground — Gloom Hands won’t follow you to higher elevation, so you can escape their reach and rain fire from above.
  • Equip gloom resistance armor — The Depths Armor ’s set bonus will make you more resistant to gloom attacks, negating some of the damage you take when you’re grabbed by the hands.
  • Shake your analog sticks as fast as possible — If you get grabbed by the Gloom Hands , chaotically wiggle your sticks to avoid losing hearts. If you’re fast enough, none of your hearts will break and you’ll break free of the grasp without taking damage.
  • Cook sundelion dishes — Sundelions are commonly found on Sky Islands, and they will replenish your gloom-inflicted hearts. If you do lose a few of your hearts, replenish them with a sunny dish.
  • Make gloom resistance dishes or elixirs — Gloom resistance dishes and elixirs can be made using dark clumps , which can be gained from Bargainer statues for 10 poes each or as a drop from Phantom Ganons.
  • Quickly kill all five of the Gloom Hands — If you don’t quickly eliminate all five Gloom Hands , they’ll begin to respawn, and they respawn fast. Make sure to not leave any stragglers behind because one hand will soon turn into five.
  • Run away if you’re not prepared — You can always leave and come back if you don’t think you’re ready to take on the challenge. Remember that there is a Phantom Ganon waiting for you after the Gloom Hands, so if you don’t think you can take on both, there is no shame in fleeing!

Gloom Hands locations

Gloom Hands can appear across Hyrule, and they can be quite the jump scare for the unprepared. They’ll spawn in set locations, so you can either avoid them entirely or hunt them down. Here are all of the Gloom Hands locations we’ve found so far:

  1. Does Phantom Ganon respawn? : r/TOTK

Does Phantom Ganon respawn? I killed one of them and saw that it dropped a very high damage weapon (despite the debuff it gives you). I was wondering if this weapon is limited because of the number of phantom ganons there are, or if they respawn. 17 24 comments Best Add a Comment Splatterklown88 • 5 mo. ago Can confirm respawn.
