Waterwraith

  • View history

The Waterwraith ( アメボウズ, Amebouzu ) is a boss that made its debut in Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 4 found in all of the sublevels of the Submerged Castle and Engulfed Castle , and in the Bully Den in Challenge Mode . It can only be defeated by Purple Pikmin ; however, the entrance to the Submerged Castle is flooded, making them impossible to bring along.

Its appearance is generally humanoid in shape, with the suggestion of a head, body, arms and legs, but without distinct characteristics, as it has a watery, transparent body. As a matter of fact, its scientific name is Amphibio sapiens , which is similar to the human's scientific name: Homo sapiens .  The Ship notes that although it can be seen, its sensors somehow detect nothing, leading to the conclusion that the Waterwraith's physical form is anchored in another dimension.

It is one of the most dangerous enemies , as it can instantly kill Pikmin by just rolling over them, and cannot be deterred or defeated until the final floor. The only good thing is that it does not appear immediately, instead giving the player a five minute grace period before appearing. In the Bully Den, two Waterwraiths will fall when the seconds counter falls to 270, leaving you with only 30 seconds to get settled and prepare. When encountered in the Submerged Castle, but not in the Bully Den, its music will play - music that is played only then.

Ship's dialogue

"What is this?!? I can see it with my optical receptors, but my sensors cannot detect it!"

"Could its physical form be anchored in another dimension? ...Attacking it is futile!"

"If only we could force it to take on physical form... But in its current state... Krzzzt-zrrrk!"

"Danger! Danger! Danger!"

Olimar's Notes

"All that is known about this creature stems from a few sightings deep underground. All reported sightings feature the same core set of details: a giant, viscous form with a clear, hazy sheen not unlike hard candy. One theory holds that it may be the ectoplasm incarnation of a kind of psychic phenomenon, but as is usually the case with such theories, it is very difficult to prove. All witnesses report being suddenly overcome with fear upon sighting the creature, approaching a state of panic and near insanity. In fact, every report contains an inordinate amount of extremely vague details, which has led to suspicions that exhaustion and fear have caused some simple natural phenomenon to be viewed as a living creature."

Louie's Notes

"Inedible. Known to cause mass hysteria, followed by leg spasms and internal thunderings."

Nintendo Player's Guide

"The terified Waterwraith appears before the final floor of the Submerged Castle, but you won't be able to defeat it until you use Violet Candypop Buds to create purple Pikmin on the cave's lowest level. One touch from a purple will make the beast temporalily vulnerable."

Before the boss fight

The Waterwraith will come on any sub level of the Submerged/Engulfed Castle, usually after about 5 minutes. However, before Sublevel 5, there is  no way  at all to harm it; not even Bomb Rocks will have any effect. With that in mind, there are a few things to remember:

  • The player should collect treasures as quickly as possible and avoid collecting corpses. Doing so could allow the player to escape without having the Waterwraith spawn.
  • The Waterwraith can kill other enemies and disable traps. This should be used to an advantage.*
  • It follows the active captain. This can be used to the player's advantage, similar to the fight with the Ranging Bloyster.*
  • It is advised to at least have the Rush Boots power-up, which can allow you to quickly escape the Waterwraith. The  Stellar Orb /Head Lamp also helps to illuminate the area, giving the player a good view of where the Waterwraith is.
  • The Waterwraith does not go into small corners, crevices, and dead-ends, making these places safe to hide in.*
  • The Captains must quickly collect as many treasures as they can. If they forget to get a treasure, they can always go back and get it later.
  • If the player has a very difficult time with the Waterwraith, they can always reset in attempt to get an easier layout for the floor.
  • The Waterwraith crushes Pikmin instantly, so it is best to keep all Pikmin with the Captains while it is active.
  • Your Pikmin will be safe on the short raised up areas.

These tips mostly apply only to the Submerged Castle. Items marked with an * can be used in the Bully Den as well.

Battle Strategy

Waterwraithcutscene

Waterwraith appears.

When encountered, the beast falls from the sky, lifts up its front roller, and smashes it on the ground, crushing any Pikmin underneath. It then commences moving around on its stone 'rollers'. It will chase Olimar and any Pikmin nearby with greater focus on crushing the active Captain. It is invincible to any Pikmin assault, even if petrified , except that of the  Purple Pikmin . When a Purple lands on or near Waterwraith in a fashion that would stun any other beast, it turns a deep shade of purple not dissimilar to that of Purple Pikmin. In this state, it is vulnerable to all Pikmin attacks. Proceed to swarm the Waterwraith. When the Wraith's health has been fully depleted, the rollers crumble and the Waterwraith (now resembling a bill-less, translucent penguin) will run aimlessly around the cave, no longer a threat to your Pikmin. Attack with more Purples and then you can easily attack it with other Pikmin. When defeated, it will vanish into nothing, and you will be troubled no more. It drops the Professional Noisemaker , a useful addition to the Exploration Kit the first time you beat it in the Submerged Castle .

Waterwraith stunned

A stunned Waterwraith, vulnerable to attacks.

Strangely, petrifying the Waterwraith makes it less vulnerable to Purple Pikmin, in which case the Pikmin must be thrown in a perfect arch for enough impact to make the creature susceptible to attack. In other words, Purples make a certain "thudding" sound when they hit an enemy or a plant; when this sound is performed, a creature may also be stunned. These effects can only occur when the Purples have a straight fall downward after their throw (the distance in which they fall vertically is irrelevant, as long as it exists). Finally, when all these circumstances are achieved, the Waterwraith may gain damage; this will not happen when Purples are thrown on it without the drop.

Note : In the Submerged Castle , you will only be able to get Purple Pikmin on the final sub level via the Violet Candypop Bud .

In the Bully Den , you will already have 25 Purples, but no other color of Pikmin. Here, there are two Waterwraiths and a variety of other creatures.

The Waterwraith is one of the few enemies in Pikmin 2 which has its own background music, along with the Titan Dweevil and the Giant Breadbug . In Sub levels 1-4, when it appears, its own music track plays. When it has no rollers, a different piece of music plays, which has a more positive mood. The best way to defeat it is to get all of your Pikmin and the 10 Purples that you got from the Violet Candypop Buds.

Throw a Purple on it to make it vulnerable. Now swarm all your Pikmin around the rollers. This should destroy the rollers in about three seconds. Then just finish it off.

Waterwraith - Petrified

The Waterwraith while sitting on petrified rollers.

While in the Piklopedia , press the "Z" button immediately upon selecting the Waterwraith to petrify its roller. When the Waterwraith itself lands, it too will be encased in stone, but the roller will revert to its normal state before the creature itself. Petrify it again, and the Wraith is normal, but not the rollers; the Wraith will have problems lifting them. Its audio will get messed up, as it cries with each attempt to pick up the front roller. It is possible to do this in the main game (and Challenge Mode) as well, but the beast won't turn purple when Purple Pikmin are thrown at it. This is because it needs to lift its rollers first. You can also make the Waterwraith float if you have AR by doing the one hit code.

When the Waterwraith pulls the rollers up, petrify it. Then when it wears off, do it again. If your timing is correct you should only petrify its rollers. The Waterwraith's arms will be stretched backwards, grabbing the roller that is in mid-air while it sits on the other roller facing the ground, trying to pull back the roller.

It is possible to defeat the Waterwraith while petrified. First, it must be without its rollers, and the player must deplete its health as far as possible. Then, when frozen, if Purple Pikmin are thrown onto it, it should die in that state, shattering and leaving 6-7 pools of nectar and spray of any kind.

Yet another glitch can be performed by knocking it off its rollers, and frantically switching characters, will cause the Waterwraith to appear to "ice skate" instead of sprinting.

It is likely that if the Waterwraith's head comes into contact with the Research Pod after having lost its rollers, another glitch will occur. The outcome is a change in the way it moves: instead of walking, the creature glides along; and any Pikmin that touch it are thrown out-of-the-way, though unharmed. The amount of health it had previous to the glitch occurring determines whether or not it can be damaged in this state.

Another glitch may occur when the Waterwraith attempts to turn around sharp corners. Instead of successfully completing a 360 degrees turn, it may get wedged in the middle of a tight space. This could either be helpful, allowing the player to avoid the Waterwraith, but this glitch could also block crucial pathways, such as a pathway to the next floor. Unfortunately, the only solution for this is to reset.

Yet another glitch happens when the Waterwraith is hit with a Purple Pikmin while running. The Waterwraith may turn clear while in the crouching position, instead of it having a purple hue.

Another possible glitch is known to happen in the Bully Den . The cause of this glitch is unknown, but the effects are strange. When both Waterwraiths have had their rollers taken away, they will sometimes only frantically run away from Olimar , and will casually walk past Louie and even stop right in front of him, as if they do not even notice him. They can still be attacked, though.

Waterwraith in the Pikolopedia

  • The Waterwraith's species name, Amphibio sapiens (which translates to Wise Amphibian), is similar to the human species name of Homo sapiens (Wise Man).
  • There is a glitch where in the Piklopedia, it is possible that the Waterwraith will roll out-of-bounds.
  • When an Ultra Bitter Spray is used on the Waterwraith, only its rollers will petrify, leaving it vulnerable to being stunned by Purple Pikmin.
  • The Waterwraith is one of two enemies outside of the Wistful Wild to not appear in the Hole of Heroes, the other being the Giant Breadbug. They both reside in caves within the same area, the Perplexing Pool .
  • The Waterwraith's Japanese name is " Amebouzu ", which can be a portmanteau of "amoeba" (written in katakana like "ameba"), a unicellular organism usually found in water, and "umibōzu", which is, in Japanese folklore, a watery creature, with a bald head similar to a Monk.
  • Aside from the Titan Dweevil , the Waterwraith is the only boss in Pikmin 2  to have a theme that changes during the battle. This change occurs after the rollers are destroyed.
  • The first form of the Plasm Wraith shares its Japanese name with the Waterwraith, as they are both called "Amebouzu" . If they are, in fact, related, this would make them the first related "unknown family" creatures.
  • Both wraiths have humanoid bodies made of liquid-like substances.
  • Also, just like the Plasm Wraith, which has a unique, golden life meter, the Waterwraith has a unique life meter; it has  2  separate life meters. one being its own health and the other being for the health of its rollers. Interestingly, both these creatures have the "Wraith" suffix in their names.
  • The Waterwraith is often encountered early on in Submerged Castle, where it chases the captains and the Pikmin around the sublevel, and then later on in the final sublevel, where the player can use Purple Pikmin to battle it. These encounters are similar to the "chase phase" and "battle phase" of the Plasm Wraith.
  • The Waterwraith, like the Plasm Wraith, cannot be harmed whilst the body is translucent.
  • They will both follow the player around
  • Searching through the files of Pikmin 2 reveals that "BlackMan" is the internal code name given to the Waterwraith.
  • A common theory is that the Waterwraith is another form of the Goolix . For years, this theory was thought to be true, however with the release of Pikmin 4 it is likely that this theory is inaccurate as Foolix and the Waterwraith are in Pikmin 4.
  • In Pikmin 4, the hole that the back legs of the Waterwraith go through is shifted closer to the edge, making it clearer how the waterwraith rolls on the ground.

The Waterwraith ( アメボウズ ? , lit.: "Candy/Rain Bouzu") is a boss from Pikmin 2 and Pikmin 4 , found in all sublevels of the Submerged Castle and Engulfed Castle , respectively.

It can only be damaged by Purple Pikmin 's stomps, which are implied to emit gravitational waves in Pikmin 4 ; however, the entrances to both the Submerged Castle and the Engulfed Castle are flooded, making them impossible to bring along. Since Purple Pikmin are only obtainable in both cave's final floors, the Waterwraith is completely invincible and immune to attacks in the first four sublevels.

The Waterwraith is one of the few bosses introduced prior to Pikmin 4 that has its own unique background music , along with the Giant Breadbug and Vehemoth Phosbat . In the Submerged Castle, when it appears, as detailed here and here .

Behavior [ edit ]

The Waterwraith is one of the most dangerous enemies , as it can instantly kill Pikmin by just rolling over them, and cannot be deterred or defeated without Purple Pikmin . When it appears, its rollers drop from the sky first, and then the creature proper, latching on to the rollers with its limbs. After a roar where it lifts the front roller and then slams it, it shakes itself to get ready to roll. Throughout its time active, it strolls around the cave floor, partially aiming at the player and their Pikmin, partially roaming around at random.

If a Purple Pikmin slams nearby, it becomes tangible and cowers in fear. After a while it will return to its intangible form, slam the front roller again, and continue moving. When its rollers are destroyed, it runs around the area on its legs, sometimes stopping to catch its breath, and if the player is far enough away, it will walk around at a leisurely pace. When attacked by Pikmin, it will eventually either shake them off or start running away. When the creature is finally dead, it starts bursting into chunks which fizzle in the air until the beast disappears entirely.

After taking out the Waterwraith's rollers and entering the second stage of the fight, if the player is sufficiently far away from the boss, it will stop walking randomly and will instead stand in place. In this animation (see right), it also occasionally turns around back and forth. This elusive animation can only be seen by being far enough away, by using the zoomed-out or ground-level camera settings, and by being on sublevel 5 of the Submerged Castle , since it is too dark to see that far away on the Bully Den . This animation can be better seen in the Piklopedia in Pikmin 4 , where the rollers can actually be destroyed.

In Cavern for a King, if a Waterwraith with its rollers approaches one without, the rollerless Wraith will duck to let the other one over. [1]

Unconventional damage [ edit ]

Typically, the Waterwraith cannot be hurt at all except for when a Purple Pikmin lands near it. There are however ways to cause it to become vulnerable, hurt, or even killed, but they require some setup and luck, and are likely not intended methods of damaging the beast.

In Pikmin 2 , if a Waterwraith lands on top of a treasure, it will look like it's bouncing in the air. In some rare cases, it may slam onto the ground as it lands, possibly triggering its vulnerable status, making it possible to damage it before floor 5. [2]

In Pikmin 4 , it can be frozen with an ice blast or Ice Pikmin , and can be stunned with a lightning shock , but it will break free almost instantly. The player can make use of the fact that frozen enemies instantly lose all their health if they are mid-air and fall, and that a mine 's explosion can damage a frozen Waterwraith. With careful positioning and timing, the player can prepare a mine and an ice blast, then throw another ice blast while directly in front of the creature as Oatchi. This will cause the Waterwraith to instantly freeze, and since it just started running over Oatchi, it will be slightly airborne. The fall will make it lose all its health, meaning its rollers will be destroyed, and then the first ice blast and mine will freeze and kill it. [3] [4]

Appearance [ edit ]

Its appearance is generally humanoid in shape, with the suggestion of a head, body, arms, and legs, but without distinct characteristics, and with a watery, transparent body. As a matter of fact, its scientific name is Amphibio sapiens , which is similar to the human's scientific name: Homo sapiens . When hit with Purple Pikmin, it instead changes to a solid, somewhat shiny purple color. Its rollers are cylinders made of stone, with small holes on the sides for the Waterwraith's limbs to go into. These holes are in the center, except for the back roller's holes in Pikmin 4 , which were positioned closer to the rims. This is because in both games, the Waterwraith moves its legs around the roller to make it look like it's pedaling a bicycle.

The Hocotate ship notes that although it can be seen, its sensors somehow detect nothing, leading to the conclusion that the Waterwraith's physical form is anchored in another dimension. This is implied further in Pikmin 4 , where both Olimar and Dalmo describe the creature's watery form as "nonexistent".

Locations [ edit ]

As stated before, the Waterwraith appears in all 5 sublevels of the Submerged Castle in Pikmin 2 and the Engulfed Castle in Pikmin 4 . In the first 4 sublevels, it will drop from the ceiling after a five minute period. In the 5th and final sublevel, it will only fall when in range of its spawning point, similar to other bosses.

Once defeated in the Engulfed Castle, it will not respawn in any sublevel, and is replaced in the final encounter with a swarm of Mitites .

The Waterwraith only appears a few time outside of its caves. In Pikmin 2 's Challenge Mode , two Waterwraiths will spawn in the Bully Den when the seconds counter falls to 270, leaving only 30 seconds for preparation. In Pikmin 4 , one can be found in the final story of the Trial of the Sage Leaf , The Purple Key . And, much like Bully Den, two will spawn immediately in sublevel 16 of Cavern for a King . These are, however, intended to be fought with Purple Pikmin.

Strategy [ edit ]

This is a Waterwraith as seen in the ingame Piklopedia at the Valley of Repose

While wandering [ edit ]

The Waterwraith will come on any sublevel of the Submerged Castle or Engulfed Castle after 5 minutes. When encountered, the beast falls from the sky. Once it lands, it lifts up its front roller and smashes it on the ground, crushing any Pikmin underneath. It then commences moving around on its stone rollers. However, before sublevel 5, there is virtually no way at all to harm it; not even bomb rocks or attacking with Pikmin after using an ultra-bitter spray will have any effect. With that in mind, there are a few things to remember:

  • The Waterwraith can kill other enemies and disable traps. This can be used to your advantage.
  • It follows the active leader. This can be used to your advantage, similar to the fight with the Ranging Bloyster .
  • The Waterwraith does not go into small corners, crevices, and dead-ends, making these places safe to hide in. In Pikmin 4 , there are specially marked crevices with grass and metal archways that the Waterwraith will be unable to access.
  • In Pikmin 2 , if you're having a difficult time avoiding the Waterwraith, you can always reset in an attempt to get an easier or more exploitable floor layout. Similarly, in Pikmin 4 , the rewind mechanic can be essential to making more efficient movements around the sublevels or making up for heavy losses.
  • A cloud of dust is visible behind the Waterwraith, allowing you to keep better track of it.
  • In Pikmin 4 , the Waterwraith is slow, so running away is easy unless it pins you.
  • In Pikmin 4 , The Waterwraith presents very little issue to Oatchi due to his compactness and precise handling, making him ideal for Pikmin transportation instead of letting the Pikmin squad roam free.

The following tips can also be used for Story Mode:

  • You should collect treasures as quickly as possible and avoid collecting corpses. If you're fast enough, you can avoid facing the Waterwraith entirely. Remember that you can return to the cave and collect anything you missed the first time around.
  • It is advised to at least have the Rush Boots power up, which can allow leaders to quickly escape the Waterwraith. The Stellar Orb also helps to illuminate the area, giving you a good view of where the beast is.

Battle [ edit ]

A stunned Waterwraith.

Since it can only be conventionally damaged by Purple Pikmin, the only way to combat it in the Submerged Castle and Engulfed Castle is to survive until the final sublevel, where you can get Purple Pikmin via Violet Candypop Buds .

When a Purple Pikmin lands on or near the Waterwraith in a fashion that would stun any other beast, it turns a deep shade of purple not too different to that of the Purple Pikmin themselves. In this state, it is vulnerable to all Pikmin attacks. When the Waterwraith's health has been fully depleted, the rollers crumble and the creature starts running aimlessly around the cave, no longer a threat to your Pikmin. Attack with more Purple Pikmin and then you can easily attack it with other Pikmin. When defeated, it will vanish into nothing, and you will be troubled no more. In Pikmin 2 , tt drops the Professional Noisemaker , a useful addition to the Exploration Kit , the first time you beat it in the Submerged Castle .

The Waterwraith can be petrified, which is useful to stop it if it is coming towards you, but while in this state, it cannot be damaged with normal attacks – Pikmin that attack will just cause an effect similar to attacking a reinforced wall in other games. Purple Pikmin that land with a thud on the petrified creature have a different behavior, however. When the boss has its rollers, a thud can cause the health wheel to appear, if it hasn't already. In the state without rollers, these thuds will actually cause a small amount of damage, and make it possible to kill the creature when petrified.

In Pikmin 4 , you can just keep hurling your Purple Pikmin at it and it will get stuck in a loop, but make sure to call back your Pikmin when they get shaken off.

Glitches [ edit ].

water wraith spawn

The Waterwraith is the cause of a few glitches in Pikmin 2 .

  • Struggling Waterwraith : by petrifying the creature on the Piklopedia just as its archive is opened, and then petrifying it again just as the rollers break free will result in only the rollers getting petrified, but not the boss.
  • Sliding Waterwraith : By switching between a leader close to a vulnerable Waterwraith and to a leader far away from it, the creature will be seen stuck in the same pose, but moving around like normal.
  • It is likely that if the Waterwraith's head comes into contact with the Research Pod after having lost its rollers, another glitch will occur. The outcome is a change in the way it moves: instead of walking, the creature glides along; and any Pikmin that touch it are thrown out-of-the-way, though unharmed. The amount of health it had previous to the glitch occurring determines whether or not it can be damaged in this state.
  • Another glitch may occur when the Waterwraith attempts to turn around sharp corners.
  • Yet another glitch happens when the Waterwraith is hit with a Purple Pikmin while running. The Waterwraith may turn clear while in the crouching position, instead of it having a purple hue.
  • In Bully Den , the Waterwraiths will never pay attention to Louie, when playing in 2-player mode. This can result in a rollerless Waterwraith to casually walk or even stand still near Louie, instead of panicking. It can still be attacked by Louie, though.
  • In Pikmin 2 's Piklopedia , it is possible for the Waterwraith to roll out-of-bounds.

  • Size : Roller width: 112mm , as per the e-card
  • Pikmin 2 Piklopedia number : #78

Naming [ edit ]

  • Common name : Waterwraith. The name is a portmanteau of "water" and "wraith", where a "wraith" is a spirit, or a ghost.
  • Japanese nickname : アメボウズ ? . ボウズ ? translates to "Buddhist Monk", however this may in fact be referencing a type of yokai known as Bouzu or Oobouzu, Japanese monsters with a shaved head reminescent of monks, alluding to their phantasmagorical existence. アメ ? translates to "candy", referring to the creature's hard candy appearance, per Olimar's notes, and also the fact that the majority of the treasures in the cave are candies. To note is that 雨 ? means "rain". Though it is not used to describe a texture in the same way "candy" is being used, it may be referencing the Waterwraith's habit of falling from the sky.
  • Japanese name : ヤマトアメビト ? , lit.: "Yamato Candy Man".
  • Scientific name : Its scientific name, Amphibio sapiens , uses the word amphibio , similar to the English word "amphibious", and sapiens , meaning "discerning" or "wise", and which is also part of the species name for the real world human, Homo sapiens . This can be construed as both a reference to its humanoid shape, as well as it being essentially "living water".
  • Internal names : Its internal name in Pikmin 2 is blackman . The "man" part is naturally because of its human-like frame, and "black" is presumably due to the fact that it can turn purple when attacked by Purple Pikmin – during development , Purple Pikmin were much darker and given the name "black". Interestingly, the names of the creature's animations inside the game's files refer to it as "Kagebōzu" ( かげボウズ ? ), which means "Shadow Bouzu". This indicates that, during development, the Waterwraith's Japanese name was meant to be different. Interestingly, there exists another type of yokai known as Oonyuudou, described as an unclear shadow or a giant rather than a monk, if it was originally called shadow, it may be in reference to this other yokai. Pikmin 3 's Plasm Wraith is named after this other yokai in the Japanese version, アメニュウドウ ? , lit.: "Candy Nyuudou".
  • Prerelease : None.

Trivia [ edit ]

  • The Waterwraith is one of three enemies to not appear in the Wistful Wild or any of its caves, the others being the Giant Breadbug and the Toady Bloyster . All three can be found in the Perplexing Pool .
  • The Waterwraith is mentioned in Olimar's Piklopedia entry for the Plasm Wraith in Pikmin 3 Deluxe , though it just highlights how they are different.

Waterwraith dummy texture.png

  • In Pikmin 2 , if Purple Pikmin are forced to appear in the cave earlier than sublevel 5 and the monster is defeated then, it will still drop the treasure. Despite this, the monster's treasure will not be detected by the radar until the showdown with the beast in the final floor; this is likely to avoid confusion when all the other treasures are gathered in earlier floors.
  • The helpless phase of the Waterwraith, along with the Giant Breadbug and the Titan Dweevil , are the only bosses in Pikmin 2 that have their own boss theme .
  • This is not true in Engulfed Castle , however; after reading Olimar's voyage log on the creature, Collin will state there must be a way to beat it instead of telling the player to run away.

Waterwraith

The Waterwraith is the boss that haunts the Submerged Castle . In this Pikmin 2 guide, we will walk you through the Waterwraith boss fight in its entirety, including what attacks it uses, how you can combat them, and its weaknesses.

The Waterwraith is seen at several points throughout the Submerged Castle . It's an invisible creature with steamroller wheels that can squash massive numbers of Pikmin in no time at all.

As soon as it appears in the final level of the cave, start throwing Purple Pikmin at its back to make the boss solidify into existence. As soon as the boss turns purple, start throwing as many Pikmin and Mini-Bulbins in as fast as possible, killing the off the wheels.

Submerged Castle-IMG 2984.jpeg

Now that the beast is no longer able to crush the Pikmin, it will start running around in blind panic. The Waterwraith can run pretty fast and is hard to catch up with, but it stops to catch its breath every now and then. Take that opportunity to throw more Pikmin onto it and destroy the boss.

  • Wraiths can be especially dangerous when entering Swamps early on, with Black Forest-tier gear. It is best to avoid entering the biome at night for this reason.
  • Wraiths are the only renewable source of Chains , and the only of two sources of chains, the other being Sunken Crypts .
  • Because of their Spirit damage weakness (and considering their Physical damage resistance), Silver weapons are around 90% effective, making them a good choice. However, due to Wraith's immunity to Frost damage damage, the Frostner is only about 50% effective, making it a bad choice.
  • Wraiths can fly directly on top of you if you get under them correctly, making them unable to hit you, while being vulnerable to two handed Clubs like the Stagbreaker .

Behaviour [ ]

Wraiths normally float around single or in small groups peacefully above the soul sand. But they do chase players from a 17-block-radius and will inflict 3-second-long slowness on the player when attacking. They attack somewhat like a zombie, but are much faster. When not attacking, Wraiths usually make an eerie sound somewhat similar to a Blaze, but when chasing after a player, they start making more high-pitched sounds, and upon death, the Wraith will make a high-pitched screech. Wraiths also cannot be affected by Soul Cacti of the Soul Sand Deserts, as well as Nether Thorns.

Wraith - Basic Information

Wraith - loot and locations, wraith - weaknesses and how to fight, related links, appearance and type.

The Type of a Monster will determine what Oil it is weak against. For example, Monsters of the Necrophage Type will receive 10% extra damage from Swords coated in Necrophage oil.

Loot Dropped by Wraith

Weaknesses of wraith, how to fight wraiths, how to fight.

The best way to deal with Wraiths is to put down Yrden Sign traps and wait for them to get close to you. The traps can significantly slow down their attacks allowing you to dodge their teleporting attakks. Once you are able to dodge their teleporting attack you can use this opening to deal a lot of damage to them.

What Preparations to Make?

You should use your Silver Sword and coat it with Specter oil to deal bonus damage to them. You can prepare some Moon Dust Bomb to prevent them from staying in ethereal from whenever they attack.

Special Sign Effects

  • Yrden - This can significantly slow them down and allow you to react to their attacks faster.
  • Axii - This can stun them for a short duration or turn them into allies if you have the Puppet or Domination skills.

Review: Axial Wraith Spawn

Greg Vogel March 28, 2016 Reviews

water wraith spawn

Off-road Inspiration!

The off-road scenario: there are challenging piles of rock, loose dirt that can pose a challenge for many vehicles. Why should it? Many bashers want a machine that will just pulverize anything in its path and that’s why Axial’s Wraith has become a popular choice for off-roaders who want to just flat out get aggressive with the throttle. It’s amazing what the Wraith can do and what enthusiasts have done to it to customize the rig. So its no surprise with the popularity of the Wraith that Axial added another version of the platform to their stable, this time with a more custom look, but with the same off-road ability. The Wraith Spawn is built off of inspiration from off-road’s past with today’s RC technology that delivers on reliable action. Should you add the Spawn to your RC fleet?

AT A GLANCE

WHO MAKES IT: Axial WHO IT’S FOR: Terrain thrashers that want a go anywhere beast PART NUMBER: AX90045 HOW MUCH: $369.99 BUILD TYPE: RTR

PROS • Cool primer color one piece body • Ripsaw tires are just awesome on many surfaces • Excellent electronics package • Lots of hop-up options available • Great all terrain truck for bashing

CONS • Great electronics, but no high power battery T-connector

TOOLS AND ACCESSORIES INCLUDED • 4-way wrench • Extra Parts, such as endlinks, driveshafts and mounts

ITEMS NEEDED • Charger, 7.2V Battery with Tamiya connector and 4 “AA” batteries

ITEMS USED • Duratrax Onyx 3000mAh NiMh Battery, DTXC2055 , For twenty bucks, this pack with the standard plug worked great for getting the rig going, in fact I picked up two for extended play. • Duratrax 110 Onyx Charger, DTXP4191 , To keep costs down, the 110 is a good option for NiMh packs, it will charge them at 4-Amps. • Duratrax “AA” Batteries, DTXP4704 , Have you noticed a Duratrax theme here? Thought so. Finishing out the needed items is “AA” batteries from the DTX line. The 4-pack is all you need.

ADDITIONAL ITEMS USED • None

HOP-UPS WE RECOMMEND • Aluminum Servo Horn, AX30836 The servo horn is a stressed part when driving on the rocks, the stock horn may flex or strip, so eliminate that chance with a amping aluminum arm from the Axial option list. • Aluminum Steering Knuckle, AX30760 I’m all for beefing up the steering components on any machine and I always look for a knuckle upgrade. Axial offers aluminum knuckles, which will have stronger steering support. • Heavy Duty Aluminum Straight Link, AX30790 , After sliding over a lot of rocks during testing, the lower links looked pretty beat up. The aluminum lower link options should hold up longer than the plastic units and look great too.

FEATURE BREAKDOWN The composite plastic tube frame style chassis gives this rig its killer all-business, rock racer look. The front and rear sections of the frame have mounting locations built in to support the upper shock mount. The cross braced frame keeps everything solid including the rear battery tray. The lower center skid is a solid slab of composite plastic that supports the center transmission and serves as the suspension link pivot mounts. In the front, a receiver box with three seals to keep out the baddies sits right behind the servo. Then to finish off the look of the chassis, Axial has inserted a Lexan cockpit complete with driver figure that is safety concerned with his motocross helmet and licensed Sparco seat-belt decals.

The 4-link suspension setup consists of thick composite links with cross-drilled holes to give them a rugged beam-like look. The shocks are high end for composite plastic socks, they have threaded bodies that allow you to adjust the spring preload. The suspension has excellent articulation and will keep the truck stable when navigating rocky surfaces.

The driveline starts at the centrally mounted gearbox. The motor and pinion mate up with a dual pad slipper clutch and 32-pitch spur under the gear cover. Inside, three gears send power to the outdrives where the WB8 HD splined slider style driveshafts send power to the famous Wraith AR60 axles. These strong axles with offset pumpkin allow for excellent clearance over rocky roads. The differential is locked and power is pushed to the wheels via steel driveshafts. Everything rides on bearings and the gears are steel for maximum durability.

For electronics, an Axial AE-5 speed control sits on a plate mount attached to the frame. The ESC is LiPo compatible and will handle 3S. It’s also waterproof and has simple plugs that allow you to switch between LiPo and NiMh or to change drag brake. The ESC sends power to a 20T brushed can motor, just fine for those who are going to drive in the nasty elements. Then we get to the steering servo, a Tactic TSX45. It’s great to see such a good servo with metal gears and 151in.-oz. of torque stuffed in the front of this rig, no need for an immediate upgrade here. An AX-3 2.4GHz radio comes bound to the Spawn and has all the basic features necessary to tweak, like steering, throttle and dual rate trims. This radio works great and we doubt we’ll ever swap it for anything else.

Axial’s Spawn SUV body was developed by the Axial crew that sat down and thought of their favorite old school off-roaders and then combined all the cool cues and came up with a wild full body to fit over the Wraith frame. The Lexan was hit with a can of gray primer color and some finishing touch decals added. The real cool part is that axial cut out all of the windows except for the windshield. Axia’s 2.2-inch Ripsaw tires are a perfect collection of properly spaced lugs molded in a soft compound rubber mated with Method beadlock wheels in order to grab terrain and get the Spawn where you intend to drive it.

THE DRIVE The Wraith Spawn is really a go-anywhere machine so my anywhere was the local BMX track with park-like surroundings with rocks, roots, dirt and fun off-road terrain to bash on. First up was to rip on the throttle and check the top speed on a long dirt road. The speed was good, right on par with what I was expecting from a rig that is deemed a rock racer. I motored back and forth on the dirt and every time I let off, the drag brake in the ESC locked up the wheels and the Spawn would come to a grinding halt, almost lifting the rear wheels off the ground. For fun driving, I adjusted the brake plug so the brake would give 50% braking power.

With plenty of full speed fun, sand spins and stoppies under my belt, I had the urge to run on some of the fallen rock walls around the track’s outer perimeter. I adjusted the drag brake plug back to the factory setting for more drag brake and started running up and over the rocks. The Ripsaw tires have excellent grip on the textured rocks and pulled the Spawn up some challenging locked up the wheels and the Spawn would come to a grinding halt, almost lifting the rear wheels off the ground. For fun driving, I adjusted the brake plug so the brake would give 50% braking power.
