Disruptive Perspectives and Reinvention: Why and How for the English Learners

The unprecedented technological advances and access available to technology for educational purposes have impacted the perspectives of education in general, and ELT specifically. Coupled with this momentum, the Covid-19 pandemic has created extraordinary challenges for education and career prospects for generations to come. These events now force planners and executioners of ELT at different levels to envisage learning through the intervention of 'disruptive techniques'. These techniques seem to hold the promise to reinvent our praxis in the present and the forthcoming education scenario. The theory of disruptive innovations (Bower & Christensen 1995), utilised in business models, can be included in ESL curriculums enable learners to cope with a constantly changing demands of workplace and life. The areas of disruptive application considered here are: i. providing quality education with opportunities for 'learning-to-learn' and upskilling, and ii. providing an equitable access to ESL education. This chapter will discuss how the theory of disruptive innovations and the emerging techniques will leverage an ambience for a forward-looking ELT model that fosters fair access to learning, and nurtures a system to stimulate learners to reinvent through continuous problem-solving whereby they prepare for real-life uncertainties through adaptability. The model will mainly offer a 'learning-to-learn' platform, which has the potential to overcome the loss of instructional time, and lack of access to ESL courses and skills.

This study employs a case study model to documenting the evolution over three semesters of a Masters course in technology and language learning for in-service teachers using a social constructivist pedagogical approach (Felix, 2002) within an ecological framework, from completely face-to-face (f2f) to predominantly online. The focus is on teachers' acceptance of change in the form of integration of technology into firstly their learning and secondly their teaching, as well as their adaptability to self-managing their learning. Living in a hybrid world where we are surrounded by cutting edge technological tools and continuous changes has a deep impact not merely in our physical surroundings but also in shaping the way we teach and learn. Modern trends and practices such as the world wide web, digital media, ebook technology and social networking both make the conventional language teaching more dysfunctional and inefficient and brings along novel conceptions of teaching and learning. This paper first provides an overview on the paradigm shifts taking place in ESL and argues for the necessity of implementing modern trends in language teaching. In the second section, concerns and possible challenges are discussed in line with the aforementioned trends. While the third section of the paper elaborates on the possible solutions for keeping pace with the application of the contemporary tools in ESL. The need for the transformation from didactic and conventional teaching to a more interactive and blended language teaching is also addressed.

With the rapid development of information and communication technologies at the beginning of the 21st century terms like 'Cloud Learning,' 'Mobile Learning,' 'e-Learning,' and 'MOOCS' have been added to the long list of 'disruptive' technologies expected to revolutionize education forever. But while it is easy to see how ICT's have put unimaginable amounts of information at the fingertips of students, can we say that this is truly revolutionizing education? Are higher education institutions adjusting their pedagogic practices to make full use of these technologies? In fact, are they using them at all? In this chapter we take a closer look at the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in higher education and report findings from a study asking how these technologies are being used in academic activities. We set up the framework for the discussion by reviewing some of the most important historical developments in educational technology to then move on to present the study's results. The chapter closes by contrasting these results with past predictions about the disruptive potential of ICTs and finally reflecting on the steps that will have to be taken in order to make the most out of these technologies.
