If you’re a parent, you know how incredibly overwhelming it can be for students to stay on top of studying and all other homework assignments.

Especially when they’re juggling multiple classes.

Due dates can pile up quickly if they aren’t staying organized and managing their time wisely.

However, there is a tool that can be quite helpful – A printable homework planner! You’ll find a few different styles below.

Weekly homework planners

These free printables will help students plan and track all their assignments for each day of the week.

They can write down the class, a description of the homework assignment, and when it’s due. Once it’s completed it, check “done” and move on to the next!

I recommend printing a few copies at a time. Encourage your middle schooler or high schooler to keep one in their binder.

Homework Planner Template

The best thing I can say about this homework planner is that my own kids like it enough to want me to print a copy for them each week. The design for this planner came from a mash-up of the techniques that my brother and I used in college to organize our time. I've refined the design based on feedback from my kids (one high-schooler and two home-schoolers).

How It Works : This planner combines two very useful tools for keeping track of your homework assignments, both on a single page. First, on the left is a homework check list for each of your classes. Use it to list the assignments, due dates, and the estimated time to complete each assignment. List upcoming exams and plan times to study. Second, on the right side you can plan your week to figure out how you will get everything done.

The following PDF files can be printed as needed. The main difference is in the weekly schedule because high-schoolers and home-schoolers tend to do their homework at different times of the day.

Description

This spreadsheet includes two separate worksheets with slightly different designs. The Homeschool design doesn't include the "time" column because we found it wasn't as critical to predict how much time a particular assignment would take. However, for high school and college, estimating the time to complete each assignment can be extremely helpful.

We designed it so that you can either print blank copies of the planner, or edit it electronically. You may be able to store and edit this planner on your mobile device if you are using Excel for iPad/iPhone or Google Sheets.

Tips for Students:

1. Customize the template: Using Excel or Word, enter your class names on the left and your typical weekly schedule. For example, use the schedule to highlight the times for each of your classes, your extracurricular activities, part-time jobs, etc.

2. Print blank copies: After customizing the template, you can print as many of these planner pages as you need, and you won't need to enter your typical weekly schedule each time.

3. Don't forget incomplete assignments: When switching to a new page each week, don't forget to go through your list of assignments and transfer the incomplete assignments to the new page.

4. Don't lose it: Keep your planner page in a folder that you always have with you. If you are worried about misplacing it, try taking a picture of it with your phone as a backup.

5. Use a mobile app: If you have a phone with the Excel or Word app or Google Docs app, and you are allowed to use a mobile device in school, you could try going paperless and editing the template on your phone. You could also try using one of the many "student planner" or "homework planner" mobile apps. The problem with this approach is that phones can be a huge distraction. If you are obsessed with Instagram or texting, it may be better to avoid using your phone if you want to get anything done.

Note to Teachers:

You are welcome to print copies of this planner to give to your students. The worksheet is pretty intuitive, but don't assume that students will know how to use it. Teach them about managing their time and help them learn how a planner can help.

One important thing that you can do to help your students is to give them a realistic estimate of how much time each assignment will take. If you get a lot of students complaining that an assignment took longer than you said, either cut back the work (if it was excessive), or use the feedback to give a better estimate next time around.

How to Use Google Calendar as Your Homework Planner – Part 1

In this post, you will learn how to set up and share a Google calendar for the purpose of keeping track of homework or assignments. See Part 2 of this post to see how to set up the homework entries and reminders.

Kids lose their agenda books. They leave them in their lockers, on buses, in desks. Sometimes they just vanish without a trace. And they take with them any clue the kid had about what to do for homework.

And then there are the kids that a paper planner just doesn’t work for. Their handwriting doesn’t fit in the boxes, or they keep putting things on the wrong page, and then they are gone forever! Or they write a project or due date down, and don’t check the agenda book when it’s time to do the work.

Turning Google Calendar into an assistive technology to help these kids is simple and helps them to build technology skills that will support them for life. I think this starts to be effective around sixth grade, if there are devices available regularly through the day, or if the child carries a smartphone.

First the child needs a Google account. Log in and choose Google Calendar from the menu of Google tools:

You will see a blank Google calendar, if you’ve never used it before.

I recommend creating a dedicated Google calendar, called “Beth’s Homework” or something similar to keep all the homework in one place. This is a good practice because hopefully the student will use the calendar to keep track of appointments, sports practices, and important dates down the road, and this keeps all that information from becoming smushed together and overwhelming.

  • Name the calendar. Mine is “Beth’s Homework.”
  • Share it with others. Type an email address, and choose from the dropdown whether others can view only or edit (including adding and deleting) events.
  • Click “Create Calendar” at the bottom of the screen.

But what I love the most about this app is that the fact it allows you to go subject-wise and view all your upcoming tests, projects, or pending assignments which is a huge convenience for planning your schedule ahead of time instead of the previous day.

Unfortunately, the app doesn’t have a timetable option, but in its latest update, it added a  Calendar View  where you can see your whole month at a glance with your assignments, tests, and projects.

On the home screen, you are shown upcoming classes, events tab, and upcoming tests. ChalkBoard fetches the dates for every subject from the Timetable for your future classes. Little features like these make the app stand out from the rest and give an overall great experience. You can also view classes and assignments subject wise.

There are many easy ways to make a beautiful calendar. If you need a calendar for work, you'll probably use a program or website. If you want a slick-looking calendar for your home, you can use an online template to order a calendar to your home. And if you want to get crafty, you can make your own calendar from paper or cardstock. Making your own calendar can be great fun for people of all ages.

Making a Calendar from Paper

  • White paper or cardstock is probably the best option, since it will allow for the most visibility, but you could also use yellow, light blue, or another color that enables good visibility.
  • Alternately, you could use more than one color, so that each month the calendar pages is a different color.
  • Use a ruler when drawing the lines so that they're straight.
  • For example, if it's your sister's birthday on May 6th, cut out a photograph of her face and stick it to that date.
  • Use a picture of a Christmas tree to mark December 25th, a cartoon of a witch or ghost for Halloween, and a picture of a fluffy bunny to represent Easter.
  • You could also add famous or popular people's birthdays.

  • When you arrive at the site, navigate to the “Make a photo calendar” option.
  • There is no one “right” calendar style that you should choose. The calendar style you select should be one that appeals to your personal preferences.
  • Not every website that offers custom calendars offers the size you want. If the calendar size you want is not available from one site, check another.
  • Remember, the larger the calendar, the more expensive it will be.

  • Having the calendar shipped to you is probably your best bet, since it reduces the potential frustrations of having to get paper that is correctly sized, running out of ink, or having the printout smudging.

To make your own calendar by hand, first measure 4 inches (10 cm) down from the top of a standard piece of paper and draw a straight line across the paper at that point. Color in the background of the upper section of the paper with colored pencils, and write the name of the current month in big letters using marker. Alternatively, print out an image with the name of the month over it and paste it onto the upper section of the paper. Next, divide the lower section of the paper into 6 rows. An excellent way to start your semester off or even organize it partway is to leverage free tools to help you manage everything on your plate. In this article, you'll see how to manage your class schedule and get organized for the semester with Google Calendar.

1. Get Your Schedules and Mark Important Dates

Before you can get organized with Google Calendar , you need to get all your schedules together. Start by locating an official copy of your semester course schedule. You also want schedules for any extracurricular activities, work, or events you plan to participate in during the term.

Get as much information as you can for each of your events to make your schedule as robust as possible. This includes dates, durations, locations, required textbooks, and even teachers. Don't be afraid to include too much information in this step because you can always remove it later.

You can also check out some apps to help you stay focused during exam season if you want to maximize your productivity at the most crucial stage of the semester.

How to Make a Class Schedule Google Calendar

To make a class schedule in Google Calendar, you can use your default calendar or create a new one. For the latter, you'll need to sign in on your computer. Here's how to add a class schedule to Google Calendar once you've done that:

  • Go to My calendars on the left-hand side.
  • Click Create calendar . Then, wait for the app to make your calendar.

When you click the arrow on the top left, you'll be back on your main calendar page and should see your new calendar in the sidebar. If you want to change the color, click the Options button (three dots) that appears when you move your cursor over the calendar. Then pick a new color from the palette.

How to Add Classes to Google Calendar

The next step is to add your classes to Google Calendar. Head to a date on the calendar when your first class begins and click. This will open the new event window.

Start from the top and add the course Title , choose Event , and then add the start and end times with the Add time button.

You likely won't use the Add guests or Add Google Meet options, but you may want to include your school's Location and add a Description to contain your instructor's name, the room number, and other pertinent details for the class.

Be sure to choose your class schedule calendar from the dropdown list and then click Save .

Alternatively, you can choose More options to customize your class event further with the options below. Or, you can hit Save now and customize it later by clicking the event on your calendar and selecting Edit event .

Make Your Classes Repeat

Since your classes will occur regularly, you'll want to make this a repeating event.

At the top, below the class title, you'll see Does not repeat . Click that dropdown box, and you'll see some quick options you can pick from like Daily and Weekly on [specific day] . If one of these applies, go ahead and select it. If not, click Custom .

Now you can pick the exact days that this class repeats each week. And at the bottom, you can enter an end date so the class will stop showing up on your calendar when that day comes.

Click Save when you finish. Keep adding calendar events and customizing them until your schedule is complete. Don't forget to include things like your extracurricular activities or work schedule.

2. Set Up Google Calendar Notifications

Notifications are one of many ways to boost your productivity with Google Calendar . This helps you remember you have a class at a certain time, so you won't forget, and you won't (or shouldn't) be late. You can create notifications for individual class events or for the entire school calendar.

How to Set Up Event Notifications

If you want to set up different notifications depending on when the class occurs, you can create individual event notifications. Select the event on your calendar and click Edit event .

On the event detail page, click Add notification . Select either Notification or Email in the first dropdown box, depending on how you want to receive your alert. Then choose how far in advance of your class you'd like to be notified.

You can add more than one notification, too. For example, you can receive an alert one hour before your class starts and another 10 minutes before the start time. Just click Add notification for each additional alert you'd like to create.

Click Save if you're finished. You'll see a pop-up message asking if you want to change only that event or the others you created for that repeating class. You'll likely choose the second option for This and following events so that you'll receive the notification for that class each time. Click OK .

How to Set Up Calendar Notifications

If you would rather create notifications for your entire school calendar, this is just as simple. And this way, you'll receive a notification for any event on your calendar, whether a class, activity, shift.

For Other notifications , you can simply choose to receive an email to your connected Gmail account for each of the items listed such as new events, canceled events, or your daily agenda.

3. Access Google Calendar On the Go

You can always access your calendar from any web browser. But if you're out and about, you can check out your class schedule in the Google Calendar app on your mobile device.

You can add attachments. So, if you need a paper you wrote for a class, you can attach it to that class event in the app.

If you find yourself creating multiple homework tasks in a similar format, it might be worth setting up homework templates in order to save some time.

There are three methods for creating homework templates in Class Charts:

Creating a homework template via the in class templates tab

To create a new homework template from scratch in class, click on the Templates tab.

You will be presented with a list of homework templates, already filtered to your lesson’s subject and year group. Click on the Create new template button.

The Templates tab will now display a similar interface to the Set homework tab.

One key difference to the regular set homework tab is the inclusion of three additional template fields. These are explained in more detail below:

Choose year : The year group that the homework template is intended for.

Choose subject : The subject that the homework template is intended for

Template name : The template name that appears in the Templates section. Pupils do not see this name.

Enter the homework task details as you would a normal homework task. Once you are happy with your homework template, click on the Save template button.

The new homework template will be saved successfully, appearing in the list of available templates.

To create a new homework template from an existing homework task, click on the View homework tab.

Create a calendar

Publisher calendar options allow you to customize a calendar to include date ranges from 1900 to 2200, and also to show either one month or an entire year on each page.

On the File menu, click New .

Click BUILT-IN , and then click Calendars . (In Publisher 2010, click Calendars under Most Popular .)

Click the calendar that you want to create. Calendars are categorized by type (for example, Full Page or Wallet Size ).

In the task pane, click the options that you want, such as color or font scheme, page orientation, and whether to show one month or one year per calendar page (to change the month that the calendar starts on, click Set Calendar Dates ).

To include a schedule of events in your calendar, select the Include schedule of events check box.

Note:  Not all of the calendar design templates support a schedule of events.

Click Create .

Add a calendar to a publication

On the Insert tab, click Calendars , and then choose a design under either This Month or Next Month .

Note:  Some designs do not include a calendar object.

If you need more options, such as more designs or the ability to choose a different month:

On the Insert tab, click Calendars , and then click More Calendars .

Click the calendar design that you want.

In the task pane, click the month and year that you want.

Important:  You must make any changes now. You cannot go back and change the month and year after you insert the calendar.

Click Insert .

In the Publication Types list, click Calendars .

Under Calendars , click the type of calendar that you want to create (for example, Full Page or Wallet Size ), and then click the design that you want.

In the Customize task pane, click the options that you want, such as color or font scheme.

In the Calendar Options task pane, click to select the page orientation, and whether to show one month or one year per calendar page (to change the month that the calendar starts on, click Set Calendar Dates ).

In the Design Gallery dialog box, click Calendars .

Under Options , click the month and year that you want.

Click Insert Object .
