Physician Assistant Online Program: Brainstorming and refining capstone topics

  • Mobile Point of Care Resources
  • Brainstorming and refining capstone topics
  • Writing the research question and searching the literature
  • Helpful tools, links, and Yale services

About this page

This section will walk you through exercises to develop a research topic and get a sense of the availability of literature on that topic. If you prefer to watch a recording, these concepts were covered in the November 2022 librarian live session .

At this stage of your project, you are executing  scoping searches.

Scoping searches help you:

get an idea of how much literature there is on a topic

find prominent authors and papers in the field

identify gaps in the current scholarly conversation

refine your research question

This is in contrast to  comprehensive  or  systematic searching , which you will conduct once your topic is finalized.

Brainstorming exercise

  • Mind mapping exercise This tool from the University of Arizona Libraries will allow you to take an initial nugget of an idea and brainstorm potential directions you could explore for a capstone project. It will also help you develop some search terms to take into the various databases.

From term list to search strategy

Join synonyms together with ORs and major concepts together with ANDs. If you have three main ideas in your research topic, a search strategy could look like this:  (concept A or A synonym or A acronym) AND (concept B or B synonym or B acronym) AND (concept C) . It's important to include a variety of terms since authors refer to similar ideas by different names - you don't want to miss the perfect paper because somebody called it CBT and you wrote out "cognitive behavioral therapy"!

  • Example: (cannabinoid OR cannabis) AND (epilepsy OR seizure)
  • Example: (THC OR tetrahydrocannabinol) AND (CBD or cannabidiol) AND (epilepsy OR seizure)

Scoping searches in two databases

No one database holds the entirety of the biomedical literature. While PubMed is a great tool, it only holds about 5,000 journals. Meanwhile, Scopus has ~30k across a range of disciplines. The size of both tools have different affordances: PubMed's limited scope means each article is tagged with subject headings, study design, population characteristics, and more that make finding extremely relevant papers possible quickly; meanwhile, Scopus's broad content facilitates tracking citations, allowing you to track the development of the scholarly conversation of a topic over time.

  • PubMed 1. Paste your multi-concept search into the bar on the home page. 2. Using the lefthand sidebar, try looking at the publication trends over time on your topic, filter by study design (RCT for example), or filter for specific age groups. 3. Make note of relevant or interesting-looking papers. Open them in new tabs, or paste citation information and links into a Word document. 4. Try different combinations of filters and collect additional search terms from the titles, abstracts, and keywords section of relevant articles.
  • Scopus 1. Paste each concept into its own row on the Scopus home page, adding additional rows using the + button. Combine rows with AND. 2. Sort your results by most recent to see where the conversation on the topic currently stands; by highly cited to acquaint yourself with talked-about papers (sometimes seminal and important, sometimes controversial - citations ≠ quality); and by relevance for a Google-like search experience. 3. Look at the lefthand sidebar and see frequent authors on the topic and journals that publish in the space. 4. On papers that sound relevant, browse through their bibliographies and see who has cited them since they were published. 5. Add additional search concepts if you want fewer results, remove search concepts if you want more results. 6. Note interesting papers throughout! 7. Repeat.

Refine and reflect

Work through these questions to refine your research topic and reflect on your work:

  • How did your initial topic change over the course of brainstorming search terms and conducting scoping searches?
  • What is your topic of interest now?
  • How many relevant papers did you find today? How many are clinical trials, compared to opinion pieces or conference presentations?
  • Is there still an active conversation around your topic in the literature? Or did publishing drop off 5+ years ago?
  • Does your topic seem like a viable capstone topic?
  • If not, how could you broaden the scope to find good evidence, or narrow the scope to make results sets more manageable?

Testing the viability of your topic worksheet

  • Capstone topic development exercises This worksheet is another version of the exercises above, with places to type your findings.

Evidence Based Capstone Project

The DScPAS program culminates in an Evidence-Based Healthcare capstone project. The capstone project offers students the opportunity to acquire skills and knowledge to advocate for best practices and promote the translation and utilization of the evidence. The Doctor of Science in Physician Assistant Studies prepares graduates to take on leadership roles in healthcare administration, education, public health, global health, research, and clinical practice.

The capstone project is designed to permit a student to explore a topic of personal or professional interest. Capstone projects have included:

  • Implementing and assessing a ventilator-associated pneumonia prevention protocol. The project outcomes could result in enhanced practice for the entire facility, and by disseminating the outcomes and process, advances the delivery of care, and reductions in harm;
  • Evaluating the best practices and leadership required in the implementation of an antibiotic stewardship program in an acute care hospital. Outcomes could include identifying the leadership approaches required to decrease the overall potential for infections by reducing indiscriminate use of antibiotics;
  • Reducing central line infections in a surgical intensive care unit through the utilization of the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Central Line Bundle. Outcomes could include reducing the potential harm to patients and the costs associated with an intensive care stay for surgical patients;
  • Increasing high fidelity communication with emergency medical personnel transporting trauma victims to the emergency room. Outcomes could result in getting, translating, and effectively communicating actionable information to the entire care team faster facilitating the right care right away;
  • Establishing and upholding family and person-centered care for adults with multiple comorbidities in a primary care practice. Outcomes could include recognizing and promoting the patient and care partners as the most valuable link in the delivery of safe and efficient care for chronic illnesses;
  • Establishing the PA role in an orthopedic specialty clinic for children injured in sport. Outcomes could include improvements in future bone and joint health by helping young athletes to actively and safely engage in sport.

The student’s capstone project must be approved by the appropriate members of the DScPAS program faculty.

Tufts PA Program Celebrates Student Achievements through Capstone Projects

PA student presents poster at 2024 capstone showcase.

Tufts Physician Assistant (PA) program recently celebrated the culmination of students' 25-month journey through their second-year Capstone Projects. These projects showcase not only academic achievement but also the practical application of medical knowledge and growth demonstrated by each student.

Throughout the didactic year (first year), students diligently work on their Capstone Projects, consolidating a wealth of knowledge acquired during their program. The pinnacle of this effort is a captivating poster presentation held at the conclusion of the program, highlighting the depth of their understanding and application of medical principles.

The Capstone Project extends beyond academic achievement, serving as a platform for students to hone their communication skills—a crucial asset for PAs and collaborators in the medical field. The ability to translate complex medical information into practice is a key attribute emphasized throughout the presentation.

The presentation of the Capstone Projects is a moment of pride for both students and faculty, marking the transition from foundational learning to the interpretation of medical data and the formulation of impactful research questions. This progression is a testament to the maturation of students as healthcare professionals and individuals.

“It's very rewarding to see how they've matured as a health care professional, as a person, and how proud they are of their accomplishments,” says Rosanne Washington, clinical associate professor of public health and community medicine and director of didactic education. “It's really exciting.”

Pa students present capstone research projects.

David Keahey, PA-C, MSPH, Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellow and associate professor at the University of Utah School of Medicine, delivered the keynote lecture at the PA program Capstone Presentation on April 29.

Second-year physician assistant students delivered presentations on research topics at the annual Physician Assistant Program’s Capstone Presentation on April 29, the culmination of the students’ clinical rotations and final year at Feinberg.

During their clinical rotations in the program’s second year, PA students each work on an evidence-based medicine capstone project. The final component of the curriculum is a research paper and presentation on a clinical question.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to present the conclusions of my project to my peers,” said Tara Marcus, MS. “Through the problem-based learning curriculum, the PA program prepared us well to continue learning from, and teaching our peers evidenced-based medicine, which is a skill that’s essential to our success as PAs.”

Working with patients during her cardiology rotation inspired Marcus to analyze the safety and efficacy data of the combination drug Sacubitril/Valsartan, used for the treatment of congestive heart failure.

In his remarks, Michael Fotis, BS Pharm, lecturer in the PA program and faculty advisor for the capstone research projects, highlighted the significance of the capstone presentation in developing analytical skills and evaluating the quality of students’ own practices as physician assistants.

Christina Hill’s project focused on the investigation of vitamin D and calcium co-supplementation in women with gestational diabetes.

“I was hoping to discover some clarity on whether higher dosages of supplementation may have an effect on maternal outcomes,” Hill said. “I found it interesting, because it could be such a simple and cost effective intervention that could have a substantial impact, and save our patients from the morbidity associated with diabetes.”

Christina Hill presented her capstone project on vitamin D and calcium co-supplementation in women with gestational diabetes.

Julia Silver, said her interest in women’s health and preventive medicine led her to conduct a systematic review on the role of the drug tenofovir in the prevention of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV2).

“There is not currently a medication or vaccination approved to prevent HSV2,” Silver said. “I’m excited that the evidence I found supports the use of tenofovir for pre-exposure prophylaxis of HSV2, and with future research, may eventually change the way clinicians practice medicine.”

Silver also enjoyed the chance to review the etiology, clinical manifestations and treatment of HSV2 and discuss new potential preventive options with her peers.

“As future PAs, many of our patients will have HSV2 infections and it is very important that we are well versed with both treatment and prevention options,” Silver said.

Before the presentations, David Keahey, PA-C, MSPH, Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellow and associate professor at the University of Utah School of Medicine, delivered the keynote address. Keahey discussed evidence-based medicine and advised students to recognize the importance of knowledge and empathy in taking care of patients.

“The evidence-based medicine skill mastery that this capstone experience represents will serve you for your entire careers as a valuable tool,” Keahey said.

What is a Literature Review?

A literature review summarizes and analyzes available research on a specific topic.  By identifying and analyzing current research, the writer can identify themes, gaps and/or inconsistencies to demonstrate where future research is needed.  Results can be demonstrated either chronologically, thematically or conceptually (Cronin, Ryan, & Coughlan, 2008).

Throughout the didactic portion of the curriculum, students will be guided towards the goal of completing a capstone project. The project begins to take shape in   PA 551 Medical Biostatistics ; where an emphasis is placed on bio-statistical concepts and literature search/analysis. The project continues to develop in   PA 653 Research Design & Implementation ; where students are paired together and choose a clinical question of interest.  They also formally outline and propose the concepts for their project that will ultimately result in a systematic review.  The students devise a strategy to identify appropriate literature searches, read and review the literature, and synthesize data/information. Finally, in   PA 654 Capstone Project ; students present conclusions and make recommendations in the form of a paper suitable for publication and a poster presentation. The posters are displayed and presented for JMU faculty and students. The capstone project is completed prior to students leaving for their supervised clinical experiences.

2021 Physician Assistant Capstone Research Symposium

physician assistant capstone project ideas

On Nov. 2, the third annual Physician Assistant Capstone Research Symposium took place at Hardin-Simmons University. The symposium takes place each fall semester to give students graduating with a Master of Physician Assistant degree the opportunity to showcase their various research projects before December graduation. 28 students presented in groups on topics within social science and hard science categories, while faculty, staff, and students reviewed the projects and asked questions.

In the first year of the Physician Assistant (PA) program, graduate students are introduced to research practices through a research seminar and faculty mentor. This is the gateway class to research best practices, and, from this class, PA students begin to work on their capstone projects to be displayed in their final semester.

These projects teach students to be proficient at obtaining information for patient care and to recognize the work and care that goes into scientific studies. Many of HSU’s PA students conduct their research as they are working in hospitals and outpatient clinics, studying for exams, and completing school assignments to stay on track for graduation.

Andrea Coffey, December 2021 graduate

One group, consisting of students Andrea Coffey, Emily Rejcek, and Shelby Wegman, chose to research test anxiety through their project titled,  The Progression of Test Anxiety Among First Year Physician Assistant Students at Hardin-Simmons University: A Pilot Study.  When they began their research, they discovered that, although test anxiety was a well-documented issue in medical education programs, there was no existing research on test anxiety regarding specifically PA students.

“My co-investigators and I wanted to research something that was important to us and could be utilized to better the future of PA education,” shared Coffey. “The lack of knowledge about text anxiety in PA students provided that niche for us.”

The group shared that their research involved open-ended response prompts that asked students to reflect on their experiences with test anxiety. Rather than simply relying on statistical data, this alternate avenue of garnering information from individual students’ experiences was eye-opening.

Emily Rejcek, December 2021 graduate

“Before starting to conduct research, I just thought of research as something I had to do to graduate,” said Rejcek. “However, once we decided on our research topic and began collecting data, I realized how passionate I was about the subject matter. This passion made analyzing our data incredibly interesting, made me see that I actually enjoy research, and find it rewarding. This process has honed my passion for becoming a PA educator, as I have observed test anxiety and want to help them [future PA students] overcome that.”

Another project titled  Who gets skin cancer screenings?  included third-year student Mehul Patel. The goal of the project was to identify the barriers that prevent patients from receiving skin cancer screenings. The group collected subjective data through an online survey form.

“With the data we received and analyzed, we are able to identify key gaps within the patient-provider relationship and use these results to better equip providers in regards to how they practice preventative medicine,” said Patel.

physician assistant capstone project ideas

Who gets skin cancer screenings? graph from PA Symposium

The capstone project is a requirement for the Masters of Physician Assistant, however, several of the groups will go on to the regional level to present their research again at conferences.

“The symposium allowed the rest of the HSU family a glimpse into what the HSU PA Program training entails, but also highlights the roles PAs can play in conducting novel research,” stated Coffey. “I am so grateful for the support and guidance from our wonderful HSU PA faculty both during our research journey throughout the past 18 months and throughout our PA education.”

Coordinates of elektrostal in degrees and decimal minutes, utm coordinates of elektrostal, geographic coordinate systems.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
