Brandie DeRusha

With her MA in English from Rutgers University-Camden, Brandie spends her days chasing around her toddlers and writing. She loves to pair wine with her reading; preferably a Brontë, or an Elliot, or a Woolf novel. Depending on the mood. She currently lives in Florida with her husband, two kids and furry beast.

Somewhere between childhood and adulthood, I forgot how to dream for my life. It was in between those “you can do anything you put your mind to” platitudes from my mother, to “you’ll never make any money if you get a degree in art” realities — also from my mother. As a good child, I believed everything people would say about my potential. If I expressed interest in writing or journalism, they would scoff at me that it was “too hard” for me; if it was acting or dancing, it was “too competitive.” Clearly it was confusing and sent me into an adolescent identity crisis. Who could I be if I couldn’t be who I was?

Now, as a grown up and a mother, I realize that in order to live our truth…we must follow our curiosity. We must embrace our curiosity. We must be allowed to explore. To get things wrong. To find out how we individually interpret the world around us. That will help us make the world a better place.

Thankfully, the way has been paved before us by millions of amazing people who refused to internalize the negative messages about their dreams. People who were so into what they were doing that nothing else mattered except that one thing. Who knew that what their heart was saying was the way without someone’s expectations of them.

Here are stories of 20 people who made their own way and changed not only their lives but ours. 20 stories of people who followed their curiously, followed their love, and led the way for us to be a better society. These 20 biography books for kids can help your kids dream big.

75 Best Picture Book Biographies for Kids, 2024

This post may contain affiliate links.

I love introducing kids to ordinary people who did amazing things by reading picture book biographies for kids. Don’t you? These biographies for kids are inspirational narrative nonfiction texts that are written like a story, appealing to children with beautiful illustrations.

I chose these books after reading thousands of picture books and understanding what children like because my background isn’t only in book reviews but in education. Plus, I’m a parent of two. I update this book list with the best newly published books, with the most recent update in November 2023.

A reading strategy I like to use with children reading nonfiction is connecting to background knowledge. As you read these biographies, both picture books for preschool and elementary ages, as well as biographical story collections for upper elementary and middle school, help your kids connect to what they’re reading.

Start with prompts like:

How are you like or not like this person?

Do you know someone who is like this person?

What other biographies or famous people does this person remind you of?

Reading biographies is informative and instructive. We learn more about people, which helps us learn more about ourselves– who we are and who we want to be.

Gifts from the Garbage Truck A True Story About the Things We (Don’t) Throw Away written by Andrew Larsen, illustrated by Oriol Vidal This is another shining example of what biographies should be like — an engaging glimpse at the MOST IMPORTANT contributions of the person, not a birth-to-death (boring) retelling. While fairy tales and myths are so popular with small people because they are removed from reality – which are filled with lavishly furnished castles, dragons and pixies and houses made of sweets and women with hair that princes can use as ladders – that doesn’t stop children having a hunger for true stories.

But biographies are especially tough to write for even the most well-read audiences because they are by definition a detailed, factual account of a person’s life and achievements.

But when the reader is a child, a biographer’s job is much, much tougher. Children are engaged by drama: highs, lows and the exciting headlines of a story.

Much of the important detail which underpins drama is dismissed as boring by children – and this is why biographies for kids which manage to retain all key facts, provide context and make another person’s life feel, well, alive are so precious.

The same goes for biographies that can use accessible language and explain complex ideas without being patronising. We think everything in this round-up fits these briefs.

We wanted to feature a broad range of subjects in this round-up – from historical figures to contemporary icons, household names to lesser-known heroes. We have included books dedicated to individuals as well as anthologies full of life stories.

‘Gloria Takes a Stand’ by Jess Rinker, published by Bloomsbury

indybest best biography kids gloria-takes-a-stand.jpg

The life of women’s rights activist Gloria Steinem is beautifully laid bare in this tome. The perfect way to encourage girls and boys to debate, speak up and listen, as well as educate them about the fight for women’s equality.

Gloria’s love of reading and writing, the courage of her own conviction and the way she advocated for herself is all the more impressive when you think that it happened at a time when it was very much a man’s world – rare for women to be highly educated or have careers.

Gloria wanted gender equality for all and made it her life’s work to achieve that. She is the ultimate feminist icon and a hero for everyone regardless of their age or sex.

‘Young, Gifted and Black’ by Jamia Wilson and Andrea Pippins, published by Wide Eyed Editions

indybest best biography kids young-gifted-and-black.jpg

With acid-bright illustrations, this book is a glorious celebration of 52 black heroes – past and present. It’s such an inviting book – everything about it is big and bold, the pages teem with detail and information. There are household names here – the likes of Oprah Winfrey and Nelson Mandela, as well as lesser-known heroes like chess player Maurice Ashley and tennis pro Yannick Noah. “You have to see it to be it” is the driving force of this book – this is what young people of all races need to see.

The verdict: Biographies for kids

Portrait of an Artist: Frida Kahlo is a thing of beauty and a prompt for thought. We think it's one ot the most beautiful books we've ever come across.

I recently read this beautifully-written book about resilience and identity, which is perfect for readers of all ages. From the moment I picked it up, I was captivated by the story of Jude, a young girl from Syria, who is navigating her life in America after her family is separated due to unrest in her home country. The free verse writing style is organic, natural, and carries a profound beauty that makes it easy to read and connect with Jude's experiences. As someone who grew up crossing cultures, I found this story to be incredibly relatable and emotionally resonant.

Perfect for Swimmers

Product Image of the Up for Air

Swimmers will love this, but so will other kids. It tackles multiple struggles that many young girls face during teenagehood.

Annabelle loves swimming but struggles with learning. She hates needing extra time to complete tests and, instead, feels most alive in the pool. To make things worse, her best friends seem to be changing — becoming distant — this summer.

Things finally seem to be looking up when she’s invited to join the high school swim team. But when an older boy begins to seem interested in Annabelle, changing circumstances force her to find where her worth lies.

Individual Opinion

This book is perfect for young swimmers and teenagers alike, as it addresses the common struggles faced during adolescence. I personally related to Annabelle's challenges with learning and feeling most alive in the pool. The story also captures the complexities of changing friendships, making it a relatable and engaging read. As Annabelle is invited to join the high school swim team and navigates new relationships, the reader gets to see her growth and self-discovery.

Harry Potter Series

A fantasy staple.

Product Image of the Harry Potter Paperback Box Set (Books 1-7)

I’ve previously recommended the first book — Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone — to younger kids. What’s different here is that from age 12 your child is ready to delve into the rest of the series.

While the serious tone from book four onwards might be too grim for younger children, 12-year-olds can process the more advanced themes. They’ll be enthralled by the longer books, and won’t find them too challenging.

These seven books have made many children happy. Harry’s journey from an ordinary orphan to a savior of the world is in a league of its own.

First-Hand Impression

My experience with the Harry Potter series has been fantastic since I first discovered it in grade school. Revisiting the books and replacing my worn-out hardcover copies with both the paperback box set and the eBook downloads has been a magical journey. As the series progresses, each book adds new layers to the existing world, making it a perfect coming-of-age story. While J.K. Rowling has her weaknesses as a writer, overall, Harry Potter is an epic series that should be read by everyone.

Roll With It

Best story about disability.

Product Image of the Roll with It

Roll With It is an excellent book featuring a character with a physical disability. Kids will encounter children with differing abilities often, but the question is: how will your kids respond to them?

The author, Jamie Sumner, has a child with cerebral palsy — the same condition as our protagonist, Ellie. Yet Ellie isn’t defined by her disability or the fact that she has to use a wheelchair. She is spunky and enjoys baking, watching cooking shows, and even writing to the hosts of these shows.

This 2019 release is refreshing and focused on what good friendships should look like. Other themes include a strong bond between Ellie and her grandmother and a grandfather with declining Alzheimer’s.

I recently read "Pax" by Sara Pennypacker and found it to be an emotionally powerful and thought-provoking story. The book follows the journey of twelve-year-old Peter and his red fox, Pax, as they face separation and learn self-reliance. While the themes can be dark, involving war and loss, it also teaches important lessons about hope and redemption. My eight-year-old twins and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this together and it sparked some meaningful discussions. However, I would recommend parents to read the book first to determine its suitability for their children, especially those who may be more sensitive to heavier topics.

Award-Winning Graphic Novel

Product Image of the Guts: A Graphic Novel

More and more educators agree that reading comic books is still reading. So, of course, we’ve included a few of those on this list. Our first is from an expert graphic novel author, Raina Telgemeier.

This novel follows a nervous girl and the physical and psychological effects of her anxiety. Guts is based on Telgemeier’s experience with anxiety and eceived rave reviews. Many kids have expressed how relatable the comic book has been for them.

If your child struggles with anxiety, has a friend who does, or just enjoys graphic novels, don’t miss out on this title.

As someone who has dealt with similar issues, I found the portrayal of both the physical and psychological effects of anxiety to be very accurate and insightful. The story is not only engaging, but it also serves as an excellent conversation starter for kids to discuss their own experiences and feelings. I truly believe that this comic book can be a helpful resource for kids who struggle with anxiety or have friends who do, and it's definitely worth checking out.

Escape From Mr. Lemoncello’s Library

A marvellous read.

Product Image of the Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library

Comparable to Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” this is an epic and colorful story.

Grade Level 3rd – 7th grade
Length 336 pages
Publisher Yearling
Publication Date June 25, 2013
ISBN 978-0307931474

When I first picked up this book, I was immediately drawn to the eccentric game designer's library and the adventure of the twelve kids competing to escape. The story, filled with puzzles and references to children's literature, is a delightful homage to libraries and their importance. However, I did find the characters to be a bit clichéd and lacking depth, which left me wanting more from the story. The puzzles were enjoyable, though somewhat repetitive, and the cultural references seemed a bit dated for today's kids. Nevertheless, I appreciated the book's message and the way it encouraged a love for reading, making it a fun read for middle schoolers and adults alike.

The author brilliantly incorporates modern Cuban-American language, cuisine, and sleight-of-hand magic into the story, giving it a unique charm. The characters, including the lovable protagonist Sal and his feisty friend Gabi, are well-developed and relatable, with a realistic portrayal of their age group. The book's focus on situational conflict and the importance of family and community adds depth and emotion to the story.

While the subject matter is undoubtedly heavy, the writing style and themes are tailored to a younger audience, making it an engaging and educational read. This book not only captivated my child's attention but also sparked meaningful conversations about history and personal growth.

The Golden Compass

A magical masterpiece.

Product Image of the His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass (Book 1)

I can only describe this as a high fantasy for pre-teens and teens. Slightly more complex than Harry Potter or Percy Jackson, this book follows Lyra, who is heading to the far North after her friend Roger was stolen by the Gobblers. Meanwhile her Uncle Asriel is trying to build a bridge to a parallel world.

While Lyra has the power to save Roger and help her uncle, she can only choose one route and betray the other. Find out what she does in this grand fantasy series that contains three epic books.

When I started reading this fantasy book, I was instantly captivated by the unique world-building, featuring talking Daemons and a strong-willed main character named Lyra. The vivid descriptions of settings like Oxford and the Arctic kept me engaged, as well as the relationships between characters and the creative magical system. Although the story may have a slow start for some, it eventually picks up and becomes an exciting, high-adventure tale that left me eager to explore the rest of the series.

The perspectives of the four main characters kept the narrative fresh, although at times it felt slightly repetitive.

The Princess Diaries

Royally funny.

Product Image of the The Princess Diaries (Princess Diaries, 1)

This series hooked me as a 12-year-old. There are 12 books in the series, which still wasn’t enough for me! I was mesmerized by Mia’s funny and honest diary entries and found myself laughing out loud as I read this book late at night.

If you don’t know, this book is about Mia Thermopolis, who is self-conscious and not doing too well in school. One day, she finds out that she is the princess of Genovia!

“WHAT? A PRINCESS?? ME???” Find out how Mia copes (or doesn’t really cope) in this immersive and adorable series.

These Princess Diaries books surprised me with how much I enjoyed them, despite not being the target audience. Mia's relatable internal monologue had me laughing throughout, and I found her character instantly lovable. The book offered a more detailed look into the characters and their backstory than the movie, making it more engaging. While the presence of algebra equations in Mia's journal was a bit distracting, the overall story flowed well. I appreciated Mia's journey of self-discovery and her struggle to balance her newfound royal status with her friendships and school life.

City of Ghosts

Creepy and imaginative.

Product Image of the City of Ghosts (1)

Set in Edinburgh, this creepy story follows Cassidy Blake, daughter of a ghost-hunting couple. Cass can actually see ghosts — thankfully, since her best friend Jacob is a ghost.

When she and her family head to Edinburgh to hunt for ghosts, Cass finds herself surrounded by paranormal creatures. And not all of them are very nice. Cassidy is sent on a mission to get rid of the sinister Red Raven in the hopes of saving herself.

I loved that this book was set in Scotland (my home country) and was imaginatively creepy. The friendship between Jacob and Cassidy was also lovely.

These City of Ghosts books by V.E. Schwab are an imaginative and engaging series, perfect for middle school readers who enjoy paranormal stories. As a fan of such tales, I found myself immersed in the adventures of Cassidy Blake, an "in-betweener" who can see ghosts, and her ghostly best friend, Jacob. The story takes place in Edinburgh, Scotland, where Cassidy's parents are filming their paranormal hunting show, and our young heroine encounters a local ghostly legend. I appreciated how the author incorporated real-life locations and Scottish history into the narrative, giving it an authentic touch. While I did have some questions about Cassidy's choices, such as keeping her abilities a secret from her parents, the overall experience was a thrilling journey into a fascinating world of ghosts and adventure.

I have another historical fiction rec for you; this time, it’s set in the Dominican Republic (1960). Anita is a 12-year-old whose relatives have immigrated to the US. When her uncle mysteriously disappears and the government begins harassing the rest of her family, it’s time for Anita to fight for her freedom, even if that means leaving behind the only world she’s ever known.

This masterpiece is a realistic representation of life for people in unsafe countries. It’s an excellent pick for fans of Anne Frank’s diary: it’s honest, tender, and will have you on the edge of your seat.

My experience with "Okay for Now" was truly memorable and heartwarming. As an adult reader, I found myself deeply immersed in Doug's story, rooting for him and the other characters throughout their ups and downs. The snarky, funny, and sometimes aching voice of the young protagonist resonated with me and transported me back to my own coming-of-age experiences. I appreciated the author's clever use of language and the beautiful intertwining of art and Audubon's bird paintings to illustrate Doug's growth and development. The exploration of male relationships, family dynamics, and friendships added depth and complexity to this touching tale.

Maybe He Just Likes You

Universally important.

Product Image of the Maybe He Just Likes You

I firmly believe this is a must-read for both middle school boys and girls. It follows Mila, a seventh grader who begins getting some unwanted attention from her male classmates. While her friends convince her that it’s just flirting, Mila finds the interactions extremely uncomfortable. To defend herself from boys who won’t take no for an answer, she joins a new karate class so that she can stand her ground.

This book touches on the casual nature of certain types of harassment. While it’s important to teach girls about this, it’s also a great resource for teaching boys about boundaries, respecting others, and stopping when somebody says no.

It’s a must-read for middle schoolers, so get a copy for your child or students!

I'm impressed with this book, as it's a fantastic read for middle school boys and girls alike. The story follows Mila, a seventh-grader dealing with unwanted attention from male classmates, and her journey to stand up for herself. Initially, her friends dismiss the boys' behavior as harmless flirting, but Mila feels extremely uncomfortable. To gain confidence, she enrolls in a karate class, learning to defend herself and assert her boundaries. This book skillfully addresses the casual nature of certain types of harassment and teaches valuable lessons about respecting others and understanding when to stop. It's an eye-opening and educational read that I believe should be in the hands of every middle schooler.

An Airport Adventure

Product Image of the Grounded

I’ve always enjoyed books with unlikely settings, which is why  Grounded caught my eye. When flights are canceled due to stormy weather, four kids meet in the airport on a night that will change them forever. We follow Feek, a poet at heart; Hannah, who is searching for her lost cat; Sami, who is worried about missing his karate tournament; and Nora, who lives in the spotlight of her famous congresswoman mother.

While they don’t have much in common (or so they think), they all have one common goal: find Hannah’s cat. This is a cozy and relaxed read, which is great for summer vacation or cozy winter reading.

When I picked up Grounded, I wasn't sure what to expect, but this heartwarming story about four tweens from different backgrounds who come together during a flight cancellation quickly won me over. The book follows their adventure as they search for a missing cat and help each other with personal problems that arise along the way. I found myself relating to the characters' struggles and cheering for their successes. The authors did a fantastic job of giving each character a distinct voice and weaving their stories together seamlessly. Though some aspects of the plot, like the kids evading airport security, might seem a bit far-fetched, the friendships and personal growth that emerge throughout the book make it an enjoyable read.

I'm delighted with this book, even though I initially felt it was too short and lacked a few cliffhangers. The adventure was captivating, and the humor appealed to both adults and children, making it an enjoyable read for my 9-year-old daughter and me. The story became increasingly engaging towards the middle and featured memorable characters like a troll and a magical spoon.

At this age, 12-year-olds should be able to read with a similar set of skills that adults do (1) . This can be a blessing or a curse, considering that their curiosity will peak. They’ll be able to make sense of adult concepts, so you’ll still have to keep an eye on what they consume (2) .

Ultimately, it’s up to parents and teachers which themes you allow the kids to explore. As for their reading milestones , here’s the norm for 12-year-olds:

  • Vocabulary: They should be able to independently grow their vocabulary by looking up unfamiliar words. Have a dictionary on hand to help them learn independently.
  • Impressionability: By this age, books can affect, alter, and influence your child’s opinions. They should be able to use what they’ve read to defend their opinions or beliefs.
  • Layered comprehension: 12-year-olds can understand and compare different formats, levels, perspectives, or meanings in what they read.
  • Reading critically: 12-year-olds should be able to express issues in what they read and will have developed a taste for certain genres over others.
  • Reading analytically: Your 12-year-old can understand how people read and write differently. They’ll be able to retell an accurate, unbiased account of what they’ve read.
  • Reading habits: 12-year-olds can read independently for extended periods. They can also explore different mediums, like newspapers, academic texts, and non-fiction novels.

This looks like an awesome list! However please note that Rosie Revere Engineer is NOT a biography. It’s a wonderful book about a little girl who wants to be an engineer, but it is NOT about Rosie the Riveter. There is an implication that the character’s great great aunt is the riveter but this is not a biography. Thank you very much for this list, it’s super helpful!

Best Fantasy Books for a 12-Year-Old

Peter and the Starcatchers by Dave Berry

Peter and the Starcatchers by Dave Berry

This Peter Pan retelling finds Peter aboard a ship of sailors. He and a bunch of other orphans aboard the ship have to protect a treasure locked in a chest hidden on the ship from pirate captain Black Stache.

Think of this as the origin story of Tinkerbell, her fairy dust, and how Peter gained his ability to fly. It’s one of our favorite fairy tale retellings and is the perfect book for a 12-year-old.

Greenglass House and more family audiobooks for road trips

Greenglass House by Kate Milford

This middle-grade mystery reminded me of Harry Potter in some ways. A child is trying to uncover the secrets of Greenglass House, a hotel for smugglers and spies before the adults do.

We read this as a family read-aloud and it was wonderful. It’s one of the books for an 12-year-old that younger readers might struggle with.

Keeper of the Lost Cities

Keeper of the Lost Cities by Shannon Messenger

Move over Harry Potter , there is a new middle grade fantasy series poised to take your throne! Meet Sophie Foster, a newly found elf living in the human world.

In book one of this ever-growing series, she’s taken back to the Lost Cities and sent to Foxfire Academy to learn to harness her powers as a Telepath.

In the process, she is welcomed into a new family, makes loads of friends, and uncovers a secret organization trying to destroy the human world. Books about secret societies, magical creatures, and magic? Yes, please.

All 5 of our children loved this middle grade fantasy series, and frankly, Jackie and I did too! It’s also a great family-friendly audiobook for long car trips.

We’ve got a whole list of books like KOTLC if you have already read this series of the best fantasy books for 12-year-olds.

The Sweetness at the bottom of the pie

Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley

This is the first book in the Flavia De Luce series.  This 11-year-old aspiring chemist is a wonderful heroine.  I love her- she is smart and precocious.  This is a great mystery book that does not have violence.

It is 1950 and Flavia has a love of poisons. When she finds a man taking his last breath in a cucumber patch, she is not scared at all, rather, she delights in solving the mystery. These are perfect books for a 12-year-old who loves a historical fiction mystery.

the Van gogh deception

The Van Gogh Deception by Deron R. Hicks

The first in a series of middle grade novels, this first story captured the attention of my D.C.-obsessed son. After all, it opens in the National Gallery when a boy wakes up with amnesia.

Described as Dan Brown meets Jason Bourne, it lives up to those clever titles. It’s a fast-paced art caper that will keep your tween fully engrossed. It’s the first in a must-read series of books for 12-year-olds.

Why Jackie loves it

This book was the perfect suspense which I did not expect.  Even though I knew that the narrator was unreliable, I still had no idea where this story was going and I didn’t know it was a Shakespeare retelling of King Lear until years after I read it.

Pay Attention, Carter Jones and more 12-year-old books

Pay Attention, Carter Jones by Gary D. Schmidt

⁣My son adored Pay Attention, Carter Jones. He loved the premise of the butler coming over to teach Carter to play cricket. He liked how Carter learned about how to be a gentleman from the butler who is strict, but exactly what the family needs during their troubling time.⁣ ⁣ He’s recommended to a few of his friends already and my mom even read it and enjoyed it!⁣ It’s a heart-filled, thought-provoking read in all the best ways. It’s one of our favorite books for 12-year-olds.

The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street and more middle grade books

The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street by Karina Yan Glaser

This charming story is about a bi-racial family in Harlem with 5 kids who are about to lose their home because their reclusive landlord won’t renew their lease.⁣ ⁣ My entire family enjoyed this delightful tale of the siblings trying to win their landlord over so they don’t have to leave home. Don’t worry. This is one of the best feel-good books on the list.

It was full of all the antics you would expect of a big family. ⁣You can find this book on our list of 40 of The Best Books for a 12-Year-Old as well as on our list of The Best Family Audiobooks For Road Trips and Home Listening .

Historical Fiction Books for 12-Year-Olds

Stella by Starlight

Stella and the Starlight by Sharon M Draper

This historical fiction novel for 12-year-olds takes place in the Depression era. Stella lives in Bumblebee, North Carolina- the segregated south where the Klan still exists.

The book touches upon so many important concepts like the depression, voting rights, racism, family, and finding your inner strength. The book has a realistic ending, not a happy one and that left my daughter begging to read more.

Refugee by Alan Gratz

Refugee by Alan Gratz

Three tales in one, the book is told in alternating chapters by three narrators.  The stories feature Josef, a Jewish refugee fleeing WWII Germany, Isabel a Cuban girl on her way to Miami in 1994, and Mahmoud a Syrian refugee seeking asylum in Germany in 2015. The chapters rotate between the three characters and their stories do connect at the end in a meaningful and moving way.

The characters are all about 13-years-old but shoulder burdens that would be hard for an adult to handle. Gratz accurately portrays each child’s struggle with both grace and clarity – not shying away from difficult emotions and even death. If you love this YA historical fiction book, we have a list of Powerful WWII Books for Kids .

The Invention of Hugo Cabret and more of the best books for a 9-year-old

The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick

Don’t let the length of this mystery book for kids deter you. Even though it is on our list of long books , there are gorgeous illustrations on every other page and the writing is only a paragraph at a time.

This middle grade mystery is an amazing story of Hugo Cabret who is an orphan in the Paris train station where he winds the clocks so that nobody will discover his secrets. Soon he discovers a drawing and a notebook that will lead him to the biggest adventure of his life. This is one of the must-read books for 12-year-olds.

far from the tree

Far From the Tree

Author : Robin Benway

Year : 2017

Genre : YA Fiction

More info: National Book Award

Age Range : 13+

This wonderful story is about Grace who was adopted at birth.  When she finds herself pregnant, she puts her daughter up for adoption.

This prompts her to look for her biological mother.  What she finds are two siblings that she never knew about. This is an amazing story told from multiple points of view. Even though I included it in books that make you cry, you will love every moment.

Why Kirsten loves it

This novel for tweens is the winner of the National Book Award for good reason.  I adored this middle-grade fiction book.  I spent half of it crying and the other half smiling.

The Parker Inheritance and more middle grade mystery books

The Parker Inheritance by Varian Johnson

The Parker Inheritance was such a fun listen! It reminded me of The Westing Game , which it references frequently and was clearly a source of inspiration in the best way.

Two new friends, both overcoming personal struggles, end up on a hunt to find a hidden fortune in the town of Lambert, South Carolina. Along the way, they encounter the racist past of the city and learned how the deep-rooted racism impacted Lambert long-term.

I loved the modern twist and more thought-provoking spin on the classic book trope of The Westing Game . It’s a must-listen and one of my favorite audiobooks for tweens!

Echo and more full cast audiobooks

Echo by Pam Muñoz Ryan

I listened to this feel-good book and it was unreal.  I want my son to read this so badly but, I also want him to listen to it as well. The full-cast audiobook plays music so it is a full sensory experience.

The story is three tales woven together in one with a magical harmonica at the center. The story follows a harmonica as it lands in the hands of Freidrich in Germany, Mike in Pennsylvania, and Ivy in California set during WWII.

Part fairy tale and part historical fiction, this is one of the novels about music that is amazing for middle grade and adults alike. This is a magical realism book for 12-year-olds

But he’s teamed up with a band of misfits. Can he bring his team together and win the competition?

Told from the perspective of multiple narrators, I highly recommend the audiobook version because of the full-cast narration. My sons (10 & 12) and I listened to this over the summer and enjoyed every minute of it! We loved hearing about the wacky competition and how the team comes together in the end. #gifted by Levine Querido

Restart and more middle grade fiction

Restart by Gordon Korman

My kids all read this book one after another. In fact, they passed it to each other to read so they could all discuss it.

Chase wakes up in the hospital after falling off a roof and doesn’t remember anything- including his name. When he gets back to school, he sees how the kids react to him. Some kids worship him and other kids are terrified of him.

The questions become, who he was and who he wants to be. This is one of the best books for 12-year-olds.

Wonder and more books for a 12-year-old

Wonder by R.J Palacio

A must-read for kids in middle school, this is an amazing book about embracing differences, kindness, and being yourself.  However, this would also be a wonderful read-aloud book for a younger audience. CW: This is one of the books that will make you cry.

August Pullman is a boy with an extraordinary facial difference.  He has been homeschooled his entire life and is starting 5th grade at Beecher Prep.  This book for 12-year-olds is amazing and has a lesson about love and acceptance that everyone needs to read.

anne frank

Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank: The Definitive Edition

Author : Anne Frank

Year : 1997

Genre : Nonfiction

More info: “The Single most compelling personal account of the Holocaust” (The New York Times Book Review)

Age Range : 12+

This is the quintessential book about the Holocaust written by Anne Frank, a Jewish girl in hiding during WWII.  Although she did not live to see freedom, her father survived as did the diary that she kept during her years of hiding.

This is a powerful book that captures the neverending capacity for hope in the human spirit. After all, Anne said it best when she said “in spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart”. The words are a powerful reminder about the human spirit.

Death, holocaust

The message that Anne passes along in this diary is one that we can all learn from. Anne’s words are powerful and thoughtful.

There are really no words to say about this book. Love is not the correct word for how I feel. This book should be required reading for everyone. Anne somehow remained positive despite the danger she faced, the isolation and hunger.

War, Child Abuse

I read this realistic fiction book   in a few hours and immediately ordered the sequel  The War I Finally Won .   It is a story of love and survival in the face of overwhelming obstacles that is emotionally crafted and brilliantly written.

The Book Thief

The Book Thief

Author : Markus Zusak

Year : 2005

This magical realism book is narrated by Death. Death tells the story of Liesel, a young girl in Nazi Germany in 1939. Liesel is living with her foster parents and learning to read from stolen books. She also shares these books with the Jewish man who is hiding in her basement.

Death, Antisemitism, War

This book is a brilliant, powerful, poignant, and unforgettable look at Nazi Germany. It’s becoming part of many school curriculums for good reason. I’ve never read a story that encapsulates life for ordinary children during this harrowing time in history.

Goldfish boy and more books for 12-year-olds

Goldfish Boy by Lisa Thompson

Another great read in middle-grade books.  This story is about a boy named Matthew who has severe OCD and has trouble leaving his house due to his anxiety.

Matthew is the last person to have seen the toddler next door before the four-year-old disappeared.   I love the fact that this book looks at the world from Matthew’s point of view.  It is a very readable, eye-opening book for 12-year-olds.

Hello, Universe and more books for a 12-year-old

Hello, Universe by Erin Entrada Kelly

This book for a 12-year-old was a Newberry Award winner for a reason. It gave the mom in me a bit of an anxiety attack when one of the characters fell down the well, but all’s well that ends well.

This tween book is a read that I’d recommend for all ages. In particular, I liked how it addressed bullying, being different, and overcoming shyness.

Song for a whale and more books for tweens

Song for a Whale by Lynne Kelly

Wow. This was one of the audiobooks for tweens I listened to with my own kids and we all just adored it.

It’s a story about a deaf girl who is struggling to connect with her community and a whale named Blue 52 who can’t find his ocean community either. She sets out to connect with Blue 52 and along the way she finds her inner strength in a beautiful wa y.

This middle grade book for 12-year-olds is delightful for adults too!

The first book in the FunJungle series shows Gibbs at his best – funny and clever!

After a hippo dies at FunJungle zoo, it’s up to Teddy and his friend Summer to prove that the Hippo was actually murdered.

Classic Books for a 12-Year-Old

Peter pan and more classic kids books

Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie

Peter Pan is one of Kirsten’s favorite childhood stories. The magical world of Neverland with it’s pirates, mermaids, and natives is so engrossing.

The story of Peter Pan and his adventures with the Darling children have inspired countless spin-off books, movies, and theatrical productions for a reason. It’s a must-read for everyone. It’s one of the must-read books for a 12-year-old.

Holes and more mystery books

Holes by Louis Sachar

A great middle grade book about camp (and yet another that was adapted into a movie!) Holes should be on every child’s list. And, if you are looking for bedtime stories for kids, this is a great read-aloud for a younger child that cannot read this themselves.

When a boy under a curse is sent to a detention camp he’s taught to behave by digging holes all day, every day.  It doesn’t take long for him to realize he’s digging for a reason – but what are the camp wardens looking to find?

I love this pick from our mystery books for tweens, it is one that be can enjoyed by adults as well.

The Egypt Game and more family audiobooks for road trips

The Egypt Game by Zilpha Neatly Snyder

This middle grade fiction enchanted me as a young girl. The 6 “Egyptians” play in the back lot of an antique store, dressing up, performing rituals, and speaking with Oracles.

Then, a murder happens in the area and trouble comes to the lot. Don’t worry, there is a happy ending to this tween mystery book and also a sequel about gypsies!

dragon hoops

Dragon Hoops by Gene Luen Yang

Gene does not like sports. He doesn’t like to play or watch but, the high school where he teaches is obsessed with their basketball team, the Dragons.

This graphic novel is one part memoir as the author tells about the current students and their quest for the state championship as well one part biography as we see the history of the team- including racism and sexism in the sport.

The Crossover and other books for a 10-year-old

The Crossover by Kwame Alexander

The Crossover is all about Josh Bell a basketball-loving middle-schooler who also loves to rap. He learns to grow up in this coming-of-ask story about Josh, his twin, and his family.

This is one of the many tween books for a 12-year-old being adapted. Look for the book adaptation starring LeBron James coming to Disney+ soon!

Coming-of-Age Books for 12-Year-Olds

The long way down and other books for a 12-year-old

This book for a 13-year-old takes place over the course of a 60-second elevator ride, 15-year-old Will is taking on his way to shoot his brother’s killer.

Visited by spirits at each level as he descends, he needs to decide if he should continue the cycle of street violence or let his brother’s death go unavenged. This moving book about grief is perfect for teens.

A kind of paradise

A Kind of Paradise by Amy Rebecca Tan

This is a best children’s book of 2019 for a reason. I read this as a read-aloud with both of my children (boys 6-8) even though it’s technically a middle grade book.

The story revolves around Jaime, who is being punished with community service hours at the library for the summer after she did something wrong in school. Jaime is reluctant to volunteer at first but quickly grows to love the staff and regulars at the library. I adored this charming tale and so did my kids. This is one of the books for 12-year-olds that adults will love too!

Bridge to Terabithia and more books for 12-year-olds

And he almost is, until the new girl in school, Leslie Burke outpaces him. The two become fast friends and spend most days in the woods behind Leslie’s house, where they invent an enchanted land called Terabithia.

One morning, Leslie goes to Terabithia without Jess and a tragedy occurs. It will take the love of his family and the strength that Leslie has given him for Jess to be able to deal with his grief. This realistic fiction book set in the 70s is an award winner for a reason.

Graphic Novels for a 12-Year-Old

New Kid and other Back-to-School Books

New Kid by Jerry Craft

This graphic novel has won numerous awards and for good reason. This is a thought-provoking story of a 7th-grade boy who wants to pursue his dream of becoming an artist.

Instead, his parents send him to a prestigious private school where he is one of the few diverse students. He can’t seem to figure out where he fits in at home or at school. This is a good one for kids who aren’t yet ready for Angie Thomas’s books.

witch boy and more graphic novels

The Witch Boy by Molly Knox Ostertag

Not only is the story great and the illustrations gorgeous, but the message of this book made it a must for best graphic novels of all time. This is one of the books for a 12-year-old that every child should read!

Non-fiction Books for a 12-Year-Old

The Boys in the Boat Youth

The Boys in the Boat

Author : Daniel James Brown

Like the adult version, this edited-down book tells the true tale of the 1936 USA men’s rowing team and their unlikely run for the gold medal. It’s a non-fiction story that reads like fiction, and sports nuts will love this story!

The Olympic games scenes gave me such a heightened sense of American pride. I was rooting for the team and cheering them on the whole time. I thought I would be bored by the minutia of rowing, but I wasn’t.
