Enthusiastic and engaging writing coach, music teacher, and elementary school tutor

Are you burnt out on writing? Lost in the writing process, essay structure, or citation rules? Confused by music and music theory? Struggling to grasp elementary school concepts? I can help! I love learning and am passionate about helping others enjoy the learning process. With 10 years of experience teaching music (piano and violin), I have worked with students of all ages, learning styles, and abilities. My favorite moment is when the lightbulb goes on and a student grasps the concept they were struggling with. I am comfortable teaching music as well as coaching writing and helping tutor elementary grades. In high school I hated writing, but then I found my voice and fell in love with communicating in written form. Now I am self-published author, blogger, writer, editor, and successful academic writer. I have expertise with APA and MLA style academic writing as well as freelance article writing. I can provide writing assistance from structuring an essay to working on college papers and using correct citation to crafting writing and communication that connects with modern readers. I offer a free 15-20 minute consultation to see if I am a good fit and can assist you with what you need.

Frequently Asked Questions Have Questions About Our Online Academy? Look No Further!

Whether you are a current or prospective Liberty University Online Academy (LUOA) family, you likely have many questions. If so, check out our FAQ section below to find answers to common questions about admissions, classes, communication, technology, payment plans, and more!

Jump to section:

Academic accommodations, affiliate programs, communication, parent expectations, transcripts, diplomas, and student ids, transfer policies, how do students with disabilities pursue accommodations with luoa.

  • Please note: Accommodations will not be considered unless you have applied with LUOA and intend to enroll.
  • We will work with you to help develop a plan to provide accommodations. Accommodations made will be within the scope of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and what LUOA is able to provide.

What about those taking college courses (Dual Enrollment)?

If you are pursuing accommodations in a Dual Enrollment course, you must submit a Notification of Need form and documentation to [email protected] . LUOA 504 plans are not transferrable, and parents must contact the LUO Office of Disability Accommodation Support (ODAS) to request accommodations.

What accommodations do LUOA students typically receive?

  • As each student is different and requires different needs, accommodations are made on a case-by-case basis. LUOA does not modify (change) the curriculum.
  • Please contact the Academic Support Department by emailing [email protected] for more information on what can be provided for you!

Will the 504 plan need to be renewed each year with LUOA?

No, 504 plans distributed by LUOA only need to be renewed if you receive a different diagnosis or need additional accommodations to be considered.

I am a point of contact at an LUOA Affiliate School. How do I set up accommodations for my students?

LUOA Academic Support provides limited disability accommodations to students of  LUOA-affiliated schools  who are enrolled or participate in LUOA programs and activities – but only to the extent that such students are enrolled or participate in LUOA programs and activities, and the accommodations relate to such enrollment or participation in LUOA programs and activities.

For more information about what we offer, reach out to [email protected] .

How does the Academy accommodate students who are a grade level behind in 1 or 2 of their subjects?

We handle unique academic situations on a case-by-case basis. We will review records, evaluate possible assessment testing, and discuss the situation with you to create solutions that follow our academic policies and serve the best interests of your student. Please see our Academic Accommodations (504) page for more information.

How does the Academy work with a student who has a learning disability, such as ADD or ADHD?

In many cases, a child with a learning disability can be placed in a recommended curriculum level. The level recommendation is made by our admissions counselors according to student records and the results of the entrance assessment exam for mathematics. We are able to review 504 documentation and work with you to make reasonable accommodations/modifications. Please see our Academic Accommodations (504) page for more information.

Can international students enroll in Liberty University Online Academy?

Liberty University Online Academy offers online distance learning to students all over the world! Student schoolwork is submitted online, which makes international learning possible. Please speak to an admissions counselor regarding required documentation.

How can I see a preview of the curriculum?

LUOA educators and Liberty University professors design our unique curriculum specifically for our students. In order to preview our curriculum, please call our admissions department at (866) 418-8741 .

Do homeschooled students need a transcript?

If you have been homeschooling your child, you will need to provide a transcript and/or report card. As you prepare your homeschooling records, you should include all courses completed, credits earned or hours spent, and the letter grade earned. Try to organize chosen courses according to grade level, even if it doesn’t conform to the exact format or timeframe of your educational process. The more recognizable you can make your transcripts, the easier it is for our Admissions Office to review them. For guidance, view a sample homeschool transcript and a sample homeschool report card .

How can LUOA help students prepare for college?

Liberty University Online Academy’s courses of study are designed to prepare students for entrance to most universities and colleges. Because each college or university has its own entrance requirements, students should contact the school(s) they want to attend to ensure LUOA’s curriculum meets the admission requirements for that institution. Check out our Life After LUOA page to see a list of schools that previous LUOA graduates have gone on to attend!

How long does the enrollment process take?

The admission process can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. The timeframe will greatly depend on the enrollment goals your student has, the accessibility of records, and the availability of your student to take possible assessment testing. Special approval or unique situations can arise that may add time to the admission process. Our skilled staff is here to help you every step of the way so you can enroll in courses as soon as possible.

How long is the school year?

Each student is given up to 41 weeks to complete 1 school year’s coursework. Semester courses are 22 weeks and year-long courses are 41 weeks.

I have just pulled my student out of a public school. What do I do now?

We recommend contacting your state to find out what your state’s homeschooling laws are. Your state could classify Liberty University Online Academy as either a private school or a homeschool.

Your local school district can provide you with any necessary documentation for your state.

We are here to help you with the transition from public school to LUOA! See our Admissions page or contact our Admissions Office for more information.

What are my particular state’s homeschooling requirements?

Each state has unique laws regarding accredited, online private schools. You, the parent, are ultimately responsible for knowing what your state will require while your student is attending LUOA. Most states view us as a private school and only require a verification of enrollment letter. View our State Requirements page and contact your state’s Board of Education for more information.

What is the purpose of the diagnostic Entrance Assessment Exam? Is it required to enroll in the Academy?

The Entrance Assessment Exam is a tool used in the admission process to evaluate your student’s readiness for our high school math and upper-level science courses. This is administered on a case-by-case basis.

Students are not required to take the diagnostic Entrance Assessment Exam to enroll.

When do classes start?

Class start dates are every Monday throughout the entire year. Our flexible program accommodates students at any time of the year – so you can enroll when it’s most convenient for you!

Since LUOA is an online school, why are immunization records or a religious exemption required?

Because we are an accredited school within the state of Virginia, full-time students enrolled in LUOA who live in Virginia must satisfy state requirements for immunization (detailed in  § 22.1-271.2 ).

Is the School Entrance Health Form needed if I submit a religious exemption?

If you choose to submit the Commonwealth of Virginia Certificate of Religious Exemption, the School Entrance Health Form is not needed.* See our Admission Requirements page for more information.

*Only students living in the state of Virginia who enroll full time in LUOA will need to submit copies of health and immunization records or a notarized religious exemption at the time of enrollment in Kindergarten, 7th, and 12th grade.

Do I need to complete Financial Check-In before submitting my student’s health records?

You may submit your student’s health records before completing Financial Check-In (FCI).

Ready to Get Started with the Admission Process?

What does it mean to be an affiliate school with luoa.

Through an affiliation with LUOA – an extension of Liberty University – you can integrate our online, Christ-centered curriculum into your school’s current program. Select as few or as many courses as needed from various grade levels to accommodate your students’ educational requirements. LUOA will teach, grade, and administer all aspects of the curriculum, providing your institution with additional expert support.

How are other affiliate partners using LUOA?

Current models in use by LUOA Affiliates include:

  • Associate degree program
  • Credit recovery options
  • Part-time studies (less than 5 credit hours)*
  • Full-time studies (5 or more credit hours)*
  • After-school program
  • High school diploma
  • Dual enrollment
  • College prep courses
  • Summer school
  • Added electives

*To be considered full-time in grades 2-12, students must take 5 courses. Full-time for 1st grade is 4 courses. Full-time for kindergarten is 3 courses.

What learning management software do you use?

We use a completely online learning management system called Canvas. Here’s what’s included:

  • A storehouse for all LUOA curriculum – no textbooks required!
  • A central location where students, teachers, school administrators, and LUOA staff submit assignments, monitor grades, and communicate via Canvas messaging.

What are LUOA’s technology recommendations?

Our system recommendations match those of Liberty University. Visit our Computer Specifications and Policies page to view a detailed list of our recommendations for computer hardware, software, and operating systems – so you can equip your students with the tools they need to succeed in their classes.

Did You Know?

MS Office: Word, PowerPoint, Excel – Office 365 are included as part of a student’s enrollment.

What is Dual Enrollment (earning college credit)?

Liberty University Online Academy, through an affiliation with Liberty University Online, offers a Dual Enrollment program specifically designed for high school juniors and seniors who want to earn college credit while still in high school. As a school, you can allow your juniors and seniors to take Dual Enrollment courses with LUOA to earn college credit! LUOA offers access to 250+ courses, 15 associate degrees, and 11 certificates .

Dual Enrollment is a great way to help your students save time and money by allowing them to complete college courses before graduating from high school. Please take some time to review the benefits of  LUOA’s Dual Enrollment program .

I am a point of contact at an LUOA Affiliate School. How do I set up 504 accommodations for my students?

For more information about what we offer, reach out to  [email protected] .

What needs to be done if my student will not be able to submit assignments for a while?

One of the benefits of schooling online is the flexibility of the schedule. With the Online Academy, you have the flexibility to change your schedule when it becomes necessary. You do not need to notify the Online Academy of a singular school day that has been or will be missed.

Our flexible curriculum allows students to take longer breaks if strictly necessary. It is important to contact our academic advising team and teacher(s) as well, so we know not to process any withdrawal for inactivity in the event of an extended absence.

For Dual Enrollment courses, contact your university professor. Courses are subject to failure for non-attendance or non-completion policy. View our Policies page or contact Academic Advising for more information.

What electives are available for 1st-8th grade?

  • There are no elective options for students in K-5th grade.
  • Students in 6th-8th grade have a small selection of courses to choose from, which come at an additional charge. Electives are not as necessary in these grades as they are in 9th-12th grade.

Feel free to review our middle school electives .

What does a typical school day look like?

We want you to have the flexibility to work schooling around your schedule, not the other way around. For that reason, your student’s school day may look a little different from another LUOA student’s. You may have your student do all their work in one sitting or have them space it out over the course of the day.

Time spent on the computer will vary depending on your school calendar, the number of subjects that have been assigned, and the student’s understanding of the course material. Generally, a student taking a full course load spread over a 180-day (not counting weekends and holidays) school year will spend 3 to 5 hours a day on the computer.

What can be done to improve my student’s penmanship if all the work is done on the computer?

In the elementary and middle school curriculum, students will have quite a few worksheets. Worksheets will need to be printed, filled out by hand, and then scanned and submitted.

If you would like your student to do more penmanship work, have the student do the online assignments and projects on paper first for the handwriting practice, and then type the work into the curriculum page and submit it.

Can I enroll my student in just one course?

Yes, your student can take as little as one course with LUOA. To be considered full-time in grades 2-12, students must take 5 courses. Full-time for 1st grade is 4 courses. Full-time for kindergarten is 3 courses.

How quickly will my student’s work be graded?

Our teachers have up to 48 hours (with the exception of weekends and holidays) to review and grade each student’s daily assignments. Since projects are much larger than daily assignments, teachers are given up to 4 days to grade projects.

How often should I check my student’s progress?

We encourage you to take an active role in your student’s education. Parents are essential in actively teaching and working with the student throughout the lessons, and we encourage daily review of student progress. Your involvement is critical to your student’s success.

If you need help interpreting scores, answering questions, or providing additional instruction to your student, please contact Academic Advising for assistance.

How do I withdraw my student from a course?

If your student needs to withdraw from an LUOA or Dual Enrollment course, please contact Academic Advising . They will process everything accordingly and work with Student Accounts to update any necessary financial obligations. Please see our Policies page for more information.

How does my student log into K-12 and/or Dual Enrollment courses?

  • To log into K-12 courses in Canvas, click on the “Canvas Login” link at the top right-hand corner of any LUOA webpage.
  • To log into Dual Enrollment courses, your student will use a different Canvas link than the one for K-12 courses.

Your student can easily access both links from the Current Students page.

Check out our Technology Recommendations page for helpful tips and support guides on navigating Canvas, downloading Microsoft 365 (which is included for free to LUOA students), and more!

  • How does grading work in Ember?

Is Ember accredited?

While Ember does not provide accredited transcripts, our curriculum is based on Virginia’s Standards of Learning.

Do students in an associate degree track or certificate track need to submit two Degree Completion Applications?

Students completing an associate degree or certificate only need to submit  one  Degree Completion Application – same as students who are only earning a high school diploma.

How do I RSVP for Commencement?

All students who are considered full-time seniors by February 1 of the current year will be eligible to participate in graduation. For example, all students considered full-time seniors by February 1, 2025, are eligible to participate in the May 2025 graduation ceremony.  An email with the link to RSVP and all details will be sent to all eligible students.

How long does a student have to be enrolled at the Academy to receive a diploma?

If a student is transferring from another school and only completing their senior year with us here at LUOA, they will need to complete a minimum of 5.5 credits with the Academy.

Returning LUOA students need to be full time in their senior year in order to graduate.

If a student was homeschooled, additional credits may be required if proper documentation cannot be provided for previous coursework. Please contact the  Academic Advising Office  for more information.

What if my student did not receive an invitation to participate in Commencement?

If your student meets the graduation eligibility requirements but did not receive an invitation, please contact  [email protected]  or the  Academic Advising Office  immediately.

There is a balance on my student’s account. What do I do?

Any account balance, including the Degree Completion Application Fee once it has been added, must be resolved before Liberty University Online Academy can release an academic transcript or diploma. Any account balance can be resolved in the  Financial Check-In portal . Please contact the  Student Accounts Office  for more information.

Do students advancing from one grade to the next within LUOA participate in a graduation ceremony?

At this time, the only LUOA students who can participate and be recognized in the graduation festivities are eligible seniors who are finishing the 12th grade.

Is there a Degree Completion Application Fee?

Yes. There is a $75* fee for all students – whether they participate in Commencement activities or not. This will be added to the student’s account in February. This fee covers things such as the diploma, diploma covers, shipping costs, etc., and will need to be paid prior to the student receiving their diploma or final transcript.

See our  Graduation  page for more information.

*Fee will vary based on program type.

Do students receive their diploma at graduation?

Students do not receive their diplomas at graduation. Once their last class is completed, their courses are reviewed – and if it is determined that they have met all necessary requirements, their degree is conferred and processed. The diploma will be mailed to the student’s home. A diploma will be delivered within  3-6 weeks from the date of conferral .

Note: Students who have not received their diploma and fail to notify the university within a year of the diploma being mailed will have to reorder.

Is there a limit on how many people can attend graduation?

No. At this time, Liberty University has not put any limits on how many people can attend graduation. Tickets are not required to attend.

How can my student connect with other LUOA seniors?

Join the LUOA Senior Class Club!

This club is open to all seniors who are looking to build meaningful community with other seniors as they celebrate their last year at LUOA. This club will meet one time per month virtually, and students will engage in activities and discussions throughout the month.

See our  Clubs  page for more information.

Where should we stay if we are planning to attend?

We suggest that you start making hotel reservations as soon as possible. Because this ceremony is for the entire university, the rooms fill up very fast. Check out some of what Lynchburg has to offer!

Other accommodations (if you are finding that hotels are already booked) can be found through Airbnb or Vrbo.com.

Where can I find updated information on LUOA’s graduation?

What if I have more questions about LUOA’s graduation?

For more information concerning graduation 2024, you may refer to the  Liberty University Commencement  website. You can also email  [email protected]  with any additional questions.

Will students in a certificate or associate degree track graduate with that specific school at Liberty University?

No. All LUOA students, even if they are in a certificate or associate degree track, will participate only in the LUOA-specific ceremony, not the ceremony for the university department of their track.

Ready to Equip Your Student for the Future?

Do parents set up the lesson plans and academic calendar.

No, the Academy sets up the student’s school calendar at the beginning of the school year based upon the student’s courses. Based on this calendar, Canvas will divide the entire course into a lesson plan.

What is the parent’s role?

LUOA’s unique blend of curriculum and teacher support allows you, the parent, to take an active role in your student’s education – but not all alone. As the parent of an LUOA student, you have the important responsibility to help motivate your student, keep them on track with assignment due dates, and regularly check their progress throughout their courses.

Your involvement in your student’s education may look different as they reach higher grade levels. A 1st grader, for instance, will require more assistance than a 12th grader.

Visit our How LUOA Works page for more information about your role as the parent of an LUOA student at each grade level.

Are advanced typing skills needed to be successful?

Though typing skills are an advantage, many students develop these skills throughout the course of their study with us.

Does schoolwork require internet access?

Yes. Our curriculum is internet-based and accessed in Canvas by a username and password assigned to each student through the process of claiming his or her account.

Does each student need their own computer?

If you have 2 (or more) students working in our computer-based courses, it makes it easier for each student to have their own computer, but it is not required. If there will be 2 students working on 1 computer, we recommend having 1 student complete his or her work in the morning, and the other in the afternoon.

If there are more than 2 students in the same family enrolled in the Academy, an additional computer is required.

Is there any work that is not completed on the computer?

Students in grades K-8 have worksheets that will need to be printed out, completed, and then scanned and submitted. Projects that are accomplished away from the computer include science experiments as well as research papers for language arts, history, and Bible. Also, in grades 7 through 12, our language arts courses include reading and evaluating printed novels, plays, and biographies.

What computer skills are needed?

You can review our Technology Recommendations page for helpful tips and guides to ensure your student is prepared for their courses.

Will my internet filter cause any problems?

If you have an internet service provider that allows you to set a filter, you may need to adjust the filter settings in order to access our school curriculum. Visit our Technology Recommendations page for more information.

Do you offer achievement testing?

Yes! We are pleased to offer our students the Stanford 10 assessment exam every spring. This is available beginning in 3rd grade. It is an optional test and does not have any fees for those who wish to take it.

How do LUOA students perform on achievement testing?

Students who perform well in Liberty University Online Academy courses generally earn above-average scores on achievement testing.

Are student ID cards required?

While having a student ID card is not required, we do recommend getting one! If you would like to order a Flames Pass (student ID card) for your child, you can fill out the Request ID Form .

Do official transcripts show outside courses that are approved for Academy credit?

The credit will show on the transcript as transfer credit. It will include the name of the school from which the credit was transferred or be listed as a “homeschool” course if the course was administered by a parent.

How are official transcripts obtained?

You can obtain transcripts for your student through the following link:

Transcript Request Form

  • Use this form to request electronic or mailed LUOA and Dual Enrollment transcripts.
  • “Standard” for Dual Enrollment transcripts
  • “Online Academy” for traditional K-12 transcripts
  • Transcripts for traditional LUOA K-12 courses are free for our families.
  • Transcripts that show only the college credit hours that have been received for Dual Enrollment courses cost $10 for the initial transcript and $1 for each additional transcript requested in the same order.
  • You must log in as the parent/affiliate POC to submit this form, not as the student.

If your student is transferring from another school and only completing their senior year with us here at LUOA, they will need to complete a minimum of 5.5 credits with the Academy.

If your student was homeschooled, additional credits may be required if proper documentation cannot be provided for previous coursework. Please  contact Academic Advising  for more information.

Ready to Join Our Student Body?

Can classes be taken outside of the academy for credit.

Outside courses are allowed but must be approved by the Academy and meet specific requirements. See our Current Student Resources page for more information on Non-Institutional Credit.

Will LUOA credits be accepted by another school?

Liberty University Online Academy’s transcripts are accepted by most schools; each school can accept or reject any transfer credits. If you anticipate transferring to a different school in the future, we recommend contacting the school to verify that all credits will be accepted.

Can I get a refund if we decide to attend another school or withdraw from courses?

Families have the opportunity to utilize a 30-day risk-free period at LUOA. For more information, visit our Tuition and Fees page.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes, payment plans are available! We offer payment plans that are customizable between 2 and 10 months. The total tuition is divided into equal monthly payments for a full year or full semester registration. This option is selected during online Financial Check-In after registration is completed.

Please note that a one-time $50 payment plan participation fee will incur on any student account when a payment plan is applied. Contact Student Accounts for more information.

What does tuition cover?

Tuition covers the curriculum, teacher access, academic advising, recordkeeping, and all academic services such as library access, transcripts, and accreditation.

It is important to note that LUOA does not provide technology such as computers or laptops. Any additional required course materials must be purchased individually.

What is the cost of attendance?

LUOA courses are $549 each. For full-time students, the cost of tuition is approximately $2,500 to $3,000 per school year. Some families may qualify for special discounts. See our Tuition and Fees page for more information.
