Center for Academic Achievement

We encourage you to take advantage of the tutors, tutoring centers with computers, study spaces and textbooks, Better Student Workshops, online tutoring and online resources available to you that can help you master the basics as well as more complex coursework.

T he CAA tutoring centers are more than just places to come to work with a tutor or get information. They are comfortable spaces where you can come and study on your own or with a study partner or even with a study group. Our tutors can go over assignments with you, answer questions, provide practice materials, and generally help you to strengthen your academic skills and master your course material. If you don’t have a computer at home, come and use one of ours.

It’s all free! If you want a head start in your studies or if you are struggling in a specific course, the sooner you tap into these resources, the faster we can help you get on your pathway and stay there.  Do you know how much you can learn by studying with a study group? The CAA staff can show you how to form a study group and good study group principles to follow.

We want to help you do well on your current assignments, but more than that, we want to help you discover within yourself the keys to your continuing, growing success as a learner. Our Better Student Workshops are excellent opportunities to learn more about effective learning skills, time management, stress management, and test taking. Come learn these skills and about the great benefits of working with a tutor.

Tutoring Center Hours

Centers are open and tutors are available.  Come and work with a tutor by yourself or in a small group. Tutors are on duty to help you with assignments, master skills to complete your course work, practice what you learned in class, or answer a question. You can also come to study, use the computers and course software, work with your study group, use the textbooks, or get information.

What Is a Five-Paragraph Essay and Why Should You Care?

We usually request our students of about 5 th grade and higher to write five-paragraph essays, which are often called “five-paragraph form” or “standard five-paragraph essay” by teachers everywhere. This, of course, leads to the question: What is that?

Let’s look at the basics.

• Start with an introduction or introductory paragraph. This will include a few elements, but the most important are the main idea of your essay (this is a thesis statement, which we will discuss some other time) and three subtopics (Iet’s call them A, B, and C) that will be organized in the order that you will discuss them and create what is known as “the body” of the essay.
• The second paragraph is about subtopic A.
• The third paragraph is about subtopic B.
• The fourth paragraph is about subtopic C.
• The fifth paragraph is the conclusion, which will restate your subtopics in order and your main idea .

Each of these parts of the essay are more complicated than this, but those elements should be discussed separately in more detail, so we will do that later in Charlotte’s Tips.

Students need to know that the five-paragraph essay is the foundation of essay writing. Once you understand it, you can organize any essay quickly and successfully, even if you are facing a question or prompt for the first time without warning on a quiz or exam. Take a few minutes to think through the main parts you need to build your essay. Here’s an example:

• Introduction: The main character (Fred) faces and overcomes obstacles to succeed. Fred makes a new friend, together they practice, and they make the team.
• Body 1: How Fred meets and makes a new friend, Bob.
• Body 2: How Fred and Bob practice and encourage each other to learn soccer skills.
• Body 3: How Fred and Bob make the soccer team.
• Conclusion: Fred meets a new friend. They work together to improve. They make the team. Fred overcomes these obstacles to succeed.

See? Now you have a map, a plan, a blueprint, and a path to writing glory! Well, you have an outline for a five-paragraph essay, and that’s a HUGE step in the right direction.

2 Check with your instructor to ensure whether or not you can exceed this length for an assignment. The introductory paragraph should include the following elements: Background information: Enough information necessary for your reader to understand your topic Thesis statement: Indicates your paper s topic, makes your paper s purpose clear, and provides an overview of the three main supporting points that will unify the Essay . The thesis statement is typically the last sentence. If you are writing in response to a text, the introduction should include the title, author, and genre of that piece.

3 Begins with a topic sentence that identifies one main idea that will be discussed as support or proof for the thesis statement Supporting sentences use specific details, demonstrated through closely related examples or evidence, to expand and explain the main idea. Generally, a well-developed paragraph has at least five to eight sentences. Paragraph unity means that all ideas in a paragraph are closely related to its topic sentence and further develop that topic sentence. That is, all sentences in a single paragraph must be unified around a central point or idea. This paragraph, and any subsequent body paragraph, should begin with a topic sentence that signals the reader that a new idea or point is being introduced.

4 As you organize your Essay , keep in mind its coherence. Coherence refers to connections among paragraphs and ideas the logical sequence of your thoughts. o Use transition words or phrases at the outset of your body paragraphs and to move from one idea to another within your paragraphs . o Have you transitioned logically from the main idea in the previous paragraph to this one? Are you making clear connections among the paragraphs and ideas? Be sure to think about coherence during the revision stage of the writing process. This paragraph begins with the final topic sentence that relates back to the remaining point mentioned in the thesis statement.

5 Each paragraph should contain a new main idea. Again, flesh out this main idea with specific examples, details, and relevant support. Be sure to maintain paragraph unity. That is, each sentence must relate to your topic sentence. The conclusion revisits your overall purpose for writing and often invites your reader to consider the implications of why your ideas are significant. The conclusion may restate the thesis, summarize the paper s major points, or leave the reader with a final thought to ponder. Several other methods for writing conclusions are included on a separate Tutoring Center handout.

6 If you choose to restate the thesis or summarize the Essay s main ideas, do not repeat the same wording from the introduction or body paragraphs . Remember not to introduce new, unrelated ideas in the conclusion.
