Life Education

Over the last few weeks, Healthy Harold visited our school in the Life Education van. Our children loved learning about safe and healthy living.

The Life Education program was fully funded by our P&C, meaning all students attended at no cost to families. Thank you P&C!

Year 6 overnight excursion

Congratulations to our fabulous students in Years 5 and 6 who displayed exemplary behaviour on our recent overnight stay in Canberra. Our children thoroughly enjoyed learning about democracy, science and art at our old and new Parliament House, the National Gallery and Questacon. Our children are to be commended for the outstanding behaviour that they demonstrated as they represented our school in our nations’ capital.

District cross country carnival

After two postponements due to rain, we are thrilled that our district cross country carnival will be going ahead this Wednesday. I wish all our students the best of luck as they represent our school with pride and great sportsmanship.

Mother’s Day stall

I hope all of our mums and other family members enjoyed the beautiful gifts that were sold at our Mother’s Day stall. I extend a huge thank you to our kind and generous P&C for organising the stall for our children to do their shopping.

Athletics carnival

Next Monday 27 May, our school will beholding our annual athletics carnival on our school grounds.  All families are welcome to join us on this fun day.

Student led conferences

Student led conferences for Semester 1 2024 will be held on Monday  3 June 2024. Classrooms will be open between 3:15pm - 4:30pm on this afternoon. Parents/carers are welcome to attend at any time during this timeframe.

At the conference, your child will facilitate a conversation with you where he/she will share class and individual learning goals, progress towards achieving them and what his/her next learning goals will be. You will have the opportunity to see what learning expectations are in place for your child, and to see how your child is progressing to meet those expectations. You will also have the opportunity to see your child’s classroom, look through their workbooks and see their work displayed. Other conferences for children will be occurring at the same time as your child’s conference. Teachers will be available to join this conversation that will be led by your child.

If you would also prefer to book in for an individual appointment with your child’s class teacher instead of attending the student-led conferences, please do so by contacting your child’s class teacher through our Seesaw app. Of course, as always, parents are encouraged to request an individual meeting with your child’s teacher at any time of the year to discuss your child’s achievement and growth.

It is the hope of our school that all children and a parent/carer attend the student led conferences or an individual appointment.

Safety on Phillips Avenue

In order to ensure the safety of all children and wider community members of our school, it is essential that the following rules and guidelines are followed during school drop off and pick up times.

·         The speed limit of 40km/h is to be adhered to.

·         Check that no pedestrians are using the children's crossing before driving through it.

·         Follow the parking restrictions. At the front of the school, it is a 2 minute parking zone. This zone is simply to drop children off or pick children up. No car is to be parked in this zone. Drivers must remain in vehicles in this zone.

·         U-turns on Phillips Ave are to be made at the turning bay past the school.

·         No parents/carers are to be using our driveway. The driveway is for staff and contractor use only.

·         Parents/carers are asked not to park across neighbour’s driveways on Phillips Avenue.

It is essential that drivers behave respectfully and responsibly to ensure our children safely enter and exit school grounds each day.

I thank all community members for your assistance in keeping all pedestrians around our school safe.

Public Holiday

There is an upcoming public holiday to mark the King’s birthday. This is occurring on Monday 10 June. Our school will not be open on this day. Children are not to come to school on this date.

Kind regards,

Michelle Barnes

Police investigate deaths of man and his two-year-old son in Lismore

A poklice wagen parked on the street obscures a unit block

Police are investigating the deaths of a man and his two-year-old son as an alleged murder-suicide, after their bodies were found in a unit on the New South Wales far north coast.

Officers discovered the 38-year-old and the boy after they forced entry to the unit in East Lismore at about 9.45pm on Sunday.

They were called to the location due to concerns about the welfare of the man and his son.

NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Peter Thurtell has told 7.30 there was an apprehended domestic violence order (ADVO) in place for the protection of the mother of the boy and the child himself.

"The father did not have a criminal record in NSW, however I understand he is from interstate and we will be making inquiries with other police organisations across the country," Deputy Commissioner Thurtell said.

He said the ADVO had been in place since July 2023, but could not clarify the circumstances as to why it was taken out.

A crime scene was established and inquiries into the deaths have begun under Strike Force McGuren.

'Tragic event'

A police officer in a light-blue shirt and dark-blue tie stands in front of a female officer.

Deputy Commissioner Thurtell earlier described the situation as "very sad".

"That was a father and son, and a more tragic event you wouldn't come across," he said.

"My understanding is that the male had an access visit on the day ... the mother raised concerns with the fact that they were due to hand over the child at 4.30pm, and by 5.30pm she had contacted the police and we went around to the residence and made the discovery."

Deputy Commissioner Thurtell said the man "was known to police for previous DV matters, but not significant issues".

"There was no weapon involved as far as I'm aware," he said.

"Any of these issues are difficult for the police but they are well-trained, our welfare systems in place look after our officers.

"Our focus should be on the poor mother who has lost a child."

Police in white cover-all suits stand in a passageway between units

A neighbour, who wished only to be known as Lucy, told the ABC she had met the father and son.

"When they first moved in they saw my cat and they came around and were playing with him ... he was a bit shy, the boy, but he just wanted to play with my cat," she said.

Lucy said many residents of the area had only recently moved back in after the devastating floods of 2022.

"I came back a year after the floods and it's taken a lot longer for some of the other places to get renovated and get tenants back in," she said.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

NSW COVID-19 cases, deaths and testing statistics

The latest weekly case numbers, testing figures totals and related COVID-19 statistics in NSW.

Changes to COVID-19 reporting

From 20 October 2023, weekly COVID numbers will no longer be published here. The best measures of COVID-19 in the community are:

  • admissions to hospital
  • sewage testing.

Detailed information is available in the weekly NSW Respiratory Surveillance Report . Find national COVID-19 case numbers and statistics on the Australian Government health website .

Latest respiratory surveillance report summary

Summary of epidemiological week ending 11 may 2024.

COVID-19 activity is increasing, with increases in most measures, including emergency department (ED) presentations, notifications and COVID-19 test positivity. There has been a particularly large increase in the notification rate of COVID-19 cases in those 90 years of age and older.

NSW Health confirms that the 2024 influenza season has commenced. Influenza notifications and ED presentations for influenza-like illness have increased in the last week and it is likely they will rapidly increase over the next 6 to 8 weeks and influenza activity will quickly reach high levels.

Measures of RSV continue to show a high level of activity although there has been some decline in the youngest children.

This winter, it is anticipated that there will be a large number of people infected with COVID-19, influenza and/or RSV, as all three viruses will be circulating at the same time. Everyone can help reduce the spread of respiratory pathogens through simple measures such as, staying home if unwell and wearing a mask if you need to go out, staying up to date with recommended vaccinations and practicing good hygiene, including regular handwashing.

Data sources and methods

NSW Health continually reviews the methods used to monitor respiratory virus activity in New South Wales. This is due to changes in testing, notification patterns and levels of respiratory virus, including COVID-19, in the community. These changes affect the usefulness of notifications for monitoring virus activity and community transmission over time. The Public Health, Rapid, Emergency and Syndromic Surveillance (PHREDSS) data, COVID-19 sewage surveillance program, whole genome sequencing (WGS) data and sentinel laboratory respiratory virus test results are currently of most value for monitoring COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses of importance in the community. Registration of positive COVID-19 rapid antigen tests (RAT) in NSW ceased on 30 September 2023 and notifications now only reflect cases referred by a doctor for PCR. NSW Health also monitors COVID-19 outbreaks in residential aged-care facilities that are published by the Australian Government and COVID-19 antiviral prescriptions dispensed in NSW.

The data source for this report updates as new information becomes available. Therefore, this report cannot be directly compared to previous versions of the NSW Respiratory Surveillance Report or to previous reporting periods. For additional information on the data sources and methods presented within this report please refer to COVID-19 surveillance report data sources and methodology.

Get tested and stay home

Protect yourself and those around you by getting tested, and stay home if you feel unwell. Even if you only have mild symptoms, you could pass COVID-19 on to someone more vulnerable.
