Game Change by John Heilemann and Mark Halperin (Harper, $28). Reading this brought me back to covering the incredible 2008 presidential election—the good, the bad, and the ugly. Heilemann and Halperin confirm many stories we all knew about, but also reveal how raw and gut-wrenching the political process can be. It will leave readers with a new respect for some of this country’s political leaders and disgust for others.

The Last Best Hope by Joe Scarborough (Crown, $26). Here, Scarborough lays out exactly what his political philosophy is. This book should be read by anyone who believes that conservatism and Republicanism should be one and the same.

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls (Scribner, $15). Jeannette is an amazing woman. Full disclosure: I worked with her when she was a gossip reporter at MSNBC and I love her! Yet when I first read this best-selling 2006 memoir, I was stunned. Jeannette grew up in a rootless family; her parents were homeless on New York’s streets when her journalism career was taking off. But the challenges and beauty of her background make for a riveting book.

The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton (Dover, $3). I read Edith Wharton to go back in time—to when I was studying at Williams as an English major. That was a period in my life when there wasn’t so much noise around me.

In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan (Penguin, $15). First of all, this book is a reminder of just how hard it is to eat well in America. Present-day supermarkets are filled with processed foods. We need to have an honest conversation about food and our health. Pollan’s 2008 best-seller is a good place to start.

America and the World by Zbigniew Brzezinski and Brent Scowcroft (Basic, $17). In a 2008 dialogue moderated by The Washington Post ’s David Ignatius, two former national security advisors—my father and Brent Scowcroft—tell you what you need to know about America and its place in the world. Any administration should study this book.

Read with us: Introducing the Morning Joe Book Club

Fall is here and it’s time to curl up with a good book and a cup o’ Joe—and how better to do that than with Morning Joe ?

We’ve had so much fun meeting hundreds of great authors over the years that we’re taking it a step further and starting the a monthly series of interviews and discussions on the hottest, new nonfiction books.

This time, instead of seeing the author on the show before you’ve started the book, we’ll dive in a month ahead of each interview, read the book together, and then join the author for a Morning Joe roundtable discussion.

We’ll kick off with Sheri Fink, author of “Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital,” on Monday.

Fink is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author; her book details the harrowing experiences, lives, and deaths of patients at New Orleans’ Memorial Medical Center following Hurricane Katrina and exposes how unprepared the U.S. is to handle such large-scale disasters.

Tune in on Monday and join the conversation online—just use #MJBookClub.

You can find Fink’s book on Amazon or in your local book store.

Skewering Leftist Excess With Mockery and Sneers

In “Morning After the Revolution,” an attack on progressive activism, the journalist Nellie Bowles relies more on sarcasm than argument or ideas.

This dramatic news photo shows, in the center foreground, two men kneeling on an urban street, each with one arm raised and his back to the camera. The man on the right is shirtless. The man on the left holds an American flag aloft. Beyond them are the darkened silhouettes of several other figures, one in a helmet with an American flag wrapped around his torso. In the distance, white clouds of smoke or steam glow in the light cast by a streetlamp.

MORNING AFTER THE REVOLUTION: Dispatches From the Wrong Side of History, by Nellie Bowles

Activists! Attention-grabbing grifters, making everything worse by thinking the world could be better. What’s to be done but slay them with mockery? This is the general project of Nellie Bowles’s “Morning After the Revolution ,” a slim collection of polemical reportage that I suspect is meant to be courageous stuff, also funny. Why, Bowles demands, does politics have to be so “deathly serious”?

Formerly a reporter for The New York Times, Bowles quit in 2021 as the paper’s newsroom, she writes, was devolving into a monoculture of utopian progressivism, “so sure everyone was good, except of course, conservatives, who were very very bad and whose politics only come from hate.”

I sense that Bowles is trying to channel Tom Wolfe, who skewered liberal pretension in high style, often by slipping stealthily into his subjects’ points of view. But where Wolfe was a precision-guided stiletto, Bowles is more of a dull blade, ridiculing her former colleagues by saddling them with laughably vacuous thoughts and dreams — their “beautiful vision of the role of journalism for such a beautiful time,” for instance. What twits!

“Morning After the Revolution” transports us to the heady days of 2020 and 2021 when protesters massed coast to coast demanding social change: Black Lives Matter, Seattle’s “autonomous zone,” police abolition marches. But it’s activists for the homeless who really gall Bowles, especially after she buys a house in a gentrifying Los Angeles neighborhood of multimillion-dollar properties. A 200-person homeless encampment had recently sprung up in a nearby park; private security costs her nearly $4,000 a year.

Cue the organizers, opportunists and socialists who think “homelessness is a tool of the revolution” — a chance to show the world what a community operating outside the capitalist system might look like, not a problem to be fixed with something simple, such as housing. One activist is from a well-off family and drives a BMW! When the park was finally cleared by the city, 180 pounds of excrement had to be shoveled out, she reports, nose wrinkled. Bowles, who says that she has “always voted yes on every homeless housing supplement I come across,” wishes the unhoused could just have better manners — be less rowdy, perhaps more constipated. More like middle-class homeowners.

Who is Jill Biden’s Trump-supporting ex-husband Bill Stevenson? He just spoke out against her and Joe Biden, and founded a bar with the first lady where Bruce Springsteen and Metallica once performed

book review on morning joe

“I just don’t understand why she is so adamant about defending him and keeping him in the race since it appears that he’s struggling,” added Stevenson. “It appears that he’s struggling with everybody these days.”

He added, “She’s always been very driven. People say she’s the one who wants to be president now.”

Here’s what we know about Jill Biden’s outspoken ex-husband:

What does Bill Stevenson do?

book review on morning joe

Did Jill Biden really have an affair during her previous marriage?

book review on morning joe

In 2020, Stevenson told British tabloid The Daily Mail that Jill had cheated on him with Joe during their marriage. Stevenson claimed the incident happened in 1974, when “Bruce Springsteen was going to play at the Stone Balloon and I had to go to Northern New Jersey to pay him in advance”.

He noted that “one of her best friends told me she thought Joe and Jill were getting a little too close. I was surprised that she came to me”.

Stevenson added, “I considered Joe a friend. I’m not surprised he fell in love with Jill. Everyone who meets Jill falls in love with her immediately. It’s hard not to.”

He claimed that Joe Biden once “stole” one of his stories

book review on morning joe

Why did Bill Stevenson call them the ‘Biden crime family’?

book review on morning joe

“Frankie Biden of the Biden crime family comes up to me and he goes, ‘Give her the house or you’re going to have serious problems,’” he told the TV channel. “I looked at Frankie and I said, ‘Are you threatening me?’ and needless to say, about two months later, my brother and I were indicted for that tax charge for US$8,200.”

“I could not believe the power of Joe Biden and the Department of Justice. I couldn’t believe it,” he added.

Bill Stevenson supports Donald Trump

book review on morning joe

Per the source, Stevenson is set to publish a book called The Bidens: The Early Years next month. “Look, I’m not a doctor or a psychiatrist but yeah, I felt he lost a step three or four years ago. Now I think it’s more like a couple of steps. Do I feel badly for him? No, because he did some horrible things to me and my family,” he added.

  • Jill Biden’s ex-husband Bill Stevenson is adding his voice to the chorus of critics calling for Joe Biden to stand down after his ‘car crash’ presidential TV debate with Donald Trump last week
  • A young Stevenson and Jill founded respected student bar the Stone Balloon together, which once played host to everyone from Metallica and Bruce Springsteen to Ray Charles and Run DMC
