General questions that Reviewers should keep in mind when reviewing articles are the following:

  • Is the article of interest to the readers of YJBM ?
  • What are the strengths and weaknesses of the manuscript?
  • How can the Editors work with the Authors to improve the submitted manuscripts, if the topic and scope of the manuscript is of interest to YJBM readers?

The following contains detailed descriptions as to what should be included in each particular type of article as well as points that Reviewers should keep in mind when specifically reviewing each type of article.

These manuscripts should present well-rounded studies reporting innovative advances that further knowledge about a topic of importance to the fields of biology or medicine. The conclusions of the Original Research Article should clearly be supported by the results. These can be submitted as either a full-length article (no more than 6,000 words, 8 figures, and 4 tables) or a brief communication (no more than 2,500 words, 3 figures, and 2 tables). Original Research Articles contain five sections: abstract, introduction, materials and methods, results and discussion.

Reviewers should consider the following questions:

  • What is the overall aim of the research being presented? Is this clearly stated?
  • Have the Authors clearly stated what they have identified in their research?
  • Are the aims of the manuscript and the results of the data clearly and concisely stated in the abstract?
  • Does the introduction provide sufficient background information to enable readers to better understand the problem being identified by the Authors?
  • Have the Authors provided sufficient evidence for the claims they are making? If not, what further experiments or data needs to be included?
  • Are similar claims published elsewhere? Have the Authors acknowledged these other publications? Have the Authors made it clear how the data presented in the Author’s manuscript is different or builds upon previously published data?
  • Is the data presented of high quality and has it been analyzed correctly? If the analysis is incorrect, what should the Authors do to correct this?
  • Do all the figures and tables help the reader better understand the manuscript? If not, which figures or tables should be removed and should anything be presented in their place?
  • Is the methodology used presented in a clear and concise manner so that someone else can repeat the same experiments? If not, what further information needs to be provided?
  • Do the conclusions match the data being presented?
  • Have the Authors discussed the implications of their research in the discussion? Have they presented a balanced survey of the literature and information so their data is put into context?
  • Is the manuscript accessible to readers who are not familiar with the topic? If not, what further information should the Authors include to improve the accessibility of their manuscript?
  • Are all abbreviations used explained? Does the author use standard scientific abbreviations?

Case reports describe an unusual disease presentation, a new treatment, an unexpected drug interaction, a new diagnostic method, or a difficult diagnosis. Case reports should include relevant positive and negative findings from history, examination and investigation, and can include clinical photographs. Additionally, the Author must make it clear what the case adds to the field of medicine and include an up-to-date review of all previous cases. These articles should be no more than 5,000 words, with no more than 6 figures and 3 tables. Case Reports contain five sections: abstract; introduction; case presentation that includes clinical presentation, observations, test results, and accompanying figures; discussion; and conclusions.

  • Does the abstract clearly and concisely state the aim of the case report, the findings of the report, and its implications?
  • Does the introduction provide enough details for readers who are not familiar with a particular disease/treatment/drug/diagnostic method to make the report accessible to them?
  • Does the manuscript clearly state what the case presentation is and what was observed so that someone can use this description to identify similar symptoms or presentations in another patient?
  • Are the figures and tables presented clearly explained and annotated? Do they provide useful information to the reader or can specific figures/tables be omitted and/or replaced by another figure/table?
  • Are the data presented accurately analyzed and reported in the text? If not, how can the Author improve on this?
  • Do the conclusions match the data presented?
  • Does the discussion include information of similar case reports and how this current report will help with treatment of a disease/presentation/use of a particular drug?

Reviews provide a reasoned survey and examination of a particular subject of research in biology or medicine. These can be submitted as a mini-review (less than 2,500 words, 3 figures, and 1 table) or a long review (no more than 6,000 words, 6 figures, and 3 tables). They should include critical assessment of the works cited, explanations of conflicts in the literature, and analysis of the field. The conclusion must discuss in detail the limitations of current knowledge, future directions to be pursued in research, and the overall importance of the topic in medicine or biology. Reviews contain four sections: abstract, introduction, topics (with headings and subheadings), and conclusions and outlook.

  • Is the review accessible to readers of YJBM who are not familiar with the topic presented?
  • Does the abstract accurately summarize the contents of the review?
  • Does the introduction clearly state what the focus of the review will be?
  • Are the facts reported in the review accurate?
  • Does the Author use the most recent literature available to put together this review?
  • Is the review split up under relevant subheadings to make it easier for the readers to access the article?
  • Does the Author provide balanced viewpoints on a specific topic if there is debate over the topic in the literature?
  • Are the figures or tables included relevant to the review and enable the readers to better understand the manuscript? Are there further figures/tables that could be included?
  • Do the conclusions and outlooks outline where further research can be done on the topic?

Perspectives provide a personal view on medical or biomedical topics in a clear narrative voice. Articles can relate personal experiences, historical perspective, or profile people or topics important to medicine and biology. Long perspectives should be no more than 6,000 words and contain no more than 2 tables. Brief opinion pieces should be no more than 2,500 words and contain no more than 2 tables. Perspectives contain four sections: abstract, introduction, topics (with headings and subheadings), and conclusions and outlook.

  • Does the abstract accurately and concisely summarize the main points provided in the manuscript?
  • Does the introduction provide enough information so that the reader can understand the article if he or she were not familiar with the topic?
  • Are there specific areas in which the Author can provide more detail to help the reader better understand the manuscript? Or are there places where the author has provided too much detail that detracts from the main point?
  • If necessary, does the Author divide the article into specific topics to help the reader better access the article? If not, how should the Author break up the article under specific topics?
  • Do the conclusions follow from the information provided by the Author?
  • Does the Author reflect and provide lessons learned from a specific personal experience/historical event/work of a specific person?

Analyses provide an in-depth prospective and informed analysis of a policy, major advance, or historical description of a topic related to biology or medicine. These articles should be no more than 6,000 words with no more than 3 figures and 1 table. Analyses contain four sections: abstract, introduction, topics (with headings and subheadings), and conclusions and outlook.

  • Does the abstract accurately summarize the contents of the manuscript?
  • Does the introduction provide enough information if the readers are not familiar with the topic being addressed?
  • Are there specific areas in which the Author can provide more detail to help the reader better understand the manuscript? Or are there places where the Author has provided too much detail that detracts from the main point?

Profiles describe a notable person in the fields of science or medicine. These articles should contextualize the individual’s contributions to the field at large as well as provide some personal and historical background on the person being described. More specifically, this should be done by describing what was known at the time of the individual’s discovery/contribution and how that finding contributes to the field as it stands today. These pieces should be no more than 5,000 words, with up to 6 figures, and 3 tables. The article should include the following: abstract, introduction, topics (with headings and subheadings), and conclusions.

  • Does the Author provide information about the person of interest’s background, i.e., where they are from, where they were educated, etc.?
  • Does the Author indicate how the person focused on became interested or involved in the subject that he or she became famous for?
  • Does the Author provide information on other people who may have helped the person in his or her achievements?
  • Does the Author provide information on the history of the topic before the person became involved?
  • Does the Author provide information on how the person’s findings affected the field being discussed?
  • Does the introduction provide enough information to the readers, should they not be familiar with the topic being addressed?

Interviews may be presented as either a transcript of an interview with questions and answers or as a personal reflection. If the latter, the Author must indicate that the article is based on an interview given. These pieces should be no more than 5,000 words and contain no more than 3 figures and 2 tables. The articles should include: abstract, introduction, questions and answers clearly indicated by subheadings or topics (with heading and subheadings), and conclusions.

  • Does the Author provide relevant information to describe who the person is whom they have chosen to interview?
  • Does the Author explain why he or she has chosen the person being interviewed?
  • Does the Author explain why he or she has decided to focus on a specific topic in the interview?
  • Are the questions relevant? Are there more questions that the Author should have asked? Are there questions that the Author has asked that are not necessary?
  • If necessary, does the Author divide the article into specific topics to help the reader better access the article? If not, how should the author break up the article under specific topics?
  • Does the Author accurately summarize the contents of the interview as well as specific lesson learned, if relevant, in the conclusions?

A simplified approach to critically appraising research evidence

Background Evidence-based practice is embedded in all aspects of nursing and care. Understanding research evidence and being able to identify the strengths, weaknesses and limitations of published primary research is an essential skill of the evidence-based practitioner. However, it can be daunting and seem overly complex.

Aim: To provide a single framework that researchers can use when reading, understanding and critically assessing published research.

Discussion: To make sense of published research papers, it is helpful to understand some key concepts and how they relate to either quantitative or qualitative designs. Internal and external validity, reliability and trustworthiness are discussed. An illustration of how to apply these concepts in a practical way using a standardised framework to systematically assess a paper is provided.

Conclusion: The ability to understand and evaluate research builds strong evidence-based practitioners, who are essential to nursing practice.

Implications for practice: This framework should help readers to identify the strengths, potential weaknesses and limitations of a paper to judge its quality and potential usefulness.

You can achieve this strength through reading. Read everything you can get your hands on. It’s not enough to read within your chosen genre, business area, or subject area.

By learning new things and opening your mind to other writing categories, you’ll develop a vivid imagination, and you’ll have an excellent vocabulary to work with.

Learning new words and concepts can also help you reduce writer’s block, which is a bonus strength that will help you achieve your goal of finishing writing projects more often.

Strength 2: Use of Literary Devices

There are many literary devices writers can use to keep their readers engaged. You might be familiar with a few of them, but if you develop your knowledge of all of them, you’ll create variety in your writing by having more to choose from.

We can’t go over every single literary device you could use in this article. However, we have picked three important ones you can use to strengthen your writing straight away.

Foreshadowing is the technique of revealing details and clues for your reader to give them an idea of what is coming. You can use this in fiction writing to create suspense, excitement, or apprehension. In business and academic writing, you can mention something briefly that you will go into detail about later.

Metaphors and similes are ways to describe things as though they are something else or compared to something else. They are great devices to use in poetry and fiction writing. You can engage your reader with metaphors and similes by making their mind work harder to imagine the things you’re describing.

The opposite of using metaphors to describe something figuratively is using concrete imagery in your descriptions. This is where the “show, don’t tell” rule comes into play. You need to show your readers what you’re writing about through sensory details.

Strength 3: Varying Sentence Lengths

Sentence lengths are important as they help the flow of your writing and contribute to its pacing. Long sentences take longer to read but can include a lot of information. Shorter sentences can have more impact.

If you want to give the reader a sense of urgency in the pacing of your writing, use shorter, snappier sentences. They can be as short as one word. 

Be careful when writing short sentences for pacing. You don’t want to write an entire scene in short sentences because your reader might rush through without picking up any details.

Longer sentences can comprise several clauses and even feature additional information in brackets or between em dashes. They take a while to read, so do your reader a favor and remember to add punctuation for pauses. 

Strength 4: Target Reader Awareness

When you know who you are writing for and what they expect, you can focus on achieving and exceeding those expectations. This works for creative, business, and academic writing. The ability to tailor your content to the intended audience is a mark of a great writer.

If you’re working on a creative writing project, such as a novel, you need to be aware of the basic requirements of a novel and any specific elements of your chosen genre. This could include story length, number of characters, and the amount of exposition.

For business writing, such as sales emails and internal company documents, it’s important to use the correct professional tone and vocabulary for your intended reader. You need to ensure your writing is clear and doesn’t use too much business jargon that could make your reader lose interest.

When writing an academic essay or thesis, your reader is likely to be an examiner or a peer in your academic field, so they should understand the subject you’re writing about. This means you can use more technical language and statistics to back up your points. You’ll also need to use formal language.

Strength 5: A Strong Writing Voice

Your writing voice makes anything you write sound uniquely yours. So it’s important to work on achieving a strong, authoritative voice to make readers pay attention to what you’re writing about.

Developing your writing voice is something that takes time and a lot of practice. Most writers start off by emulating other writers to learn how to write things effectively. Once you know how to write well, you can start developing your own way of doing it.

Weakness 1: Your Writing Lacks Substance

If you are trying to convince your readers you know what you’re talking about, you need to include details that will give them the right impression.

For a fiction writer, it’s not enough to just add extra details to your descriptions. You need to create unique characters and worlds your reader will want to invest their time in. Even genre fiction readers want to see a new spin on tried and tested plot structures.

You can always improve business and academic writing with some facts and statistics. If you’ve got research findings, add them where appropriate.

In essay writing, don’t use vague statements or general ideas. Your reader will believe your points if you can prove there’s weight to what you’re writing. Make strong points and back them up with evidence. Don’t forget to check your references and citations.

Weakness 2: Poor Grammar, Spelling, and Punctuation

This paper illustrates the growing importance of mixed-methods research to many health disciplines ranging from nursing to epidemiology. Mixed-methods approaches requires not only the skills of the individual quantitative and qualitative methods but also a skill set to bring two methods/datasets/findings together in the most appropriate way. Health researchers need to pay careful attention to the ‘best’ approach to designing, implementing, analysing, integrating both quantitative (number) and qualitative (word) information and writing this up in a way offers greater insights and enhances its applicability. This paper highlights the strengths and weaknesses of mixed-methods approaches as well as some of the common mistakes made by researchers applying mixed-methods for the first time.

Quantitative and qualitative research methods each address different types of questions, collect different kinds of data and deliver different kinds of answers. Each set of methods has its own inherent strengths and weaknesses, and each offers a particular approach to address specific types of research questions (and agendas). Health disciplines such as dentistry, nursing, speech and language therapy, and physiotherapy often use either quantitative or qualitative research methods on their own. However, there is a steadily growing literature showing the advantages of mixed-methods research is used in the health care and health service field [ 1-2 ]. Although we have advocated the use of mixed-methods in this journal eight years ago [ 3 ], there is still not enough mixed-methods research training in the health research field, particularly for health care practitioners, such as nurses, physiotherapists, midwives, and doctors, wanting to do research. Mixed-methods research has been popular in the social sciences since the twentieth century [ 4 ], and it has been growing in popularity among healthcare professionals [ 5 ], although it is still underdeveloped in disciplines such nursing and midwifery [ 6 , 7 ].

To help understand that mixed-methods research is not simply employing two different methods in the same study, one needs to consider their underpinning research philosophies (also called paradigms). First, quantitative research is usually underpinned by positivism. This includes most epidemiological studies; such research is typically based on the assumption that there is one single real world out there that can be measured. For example, quantitative research would address the question “What proportion of the population of India drinks coffee?” Secondly, qualitative research is more likely to be based on interpretivism. This includes research based on interviews and focus groups, research which us is typically based on the assumption that we all experience the world differently. Since we all live in a slightly different world in our heads the task of qualitative research is to analyse the interpretations of the people in the sample. For example, qualitative research would address the question “How do people experience drinking coffee in India?”, and “What does drinking coffee mean to them?”

Mixed-methods research brings together questions from two different philosophies in what is being referred to as the third path [ 8 ], third research paradigm [ 9 , 10 ], the third methodology movement [ 11 , 12 ] and pragmatism [ 5 ]. The two paradigms differ in key underlying assumptions that ultimately lead to choices in research methodology and methods and often give a breadth by answering more complicated research questions [ 4 ]. The roles of mixed-methods are clear in an understanding of the situation (the what), meaning, norms, values (the why or how) within a single research question which combine the strength of two different method and offer multiple ways of looking at the research question [ 13 ]. Epidemiology sits strongly in the quantitative research corner, with a strong emphasis on large data sets and sophisticated statistical analysis. Although the use of mixed methods in health research has been discussed widely researchers raised concerns about the explanation of why and how mixed methods are used in a single research question [ 5 ].

The relevance of mixed-methods in health research

The overall goal of the mixed-methods research design is to provide a better and deeper understanding, by providing a fuller picture that can enhance description and understanding of the phenomena [ 4 ]. Mixed-methods research has become popular because it uses quantitative and qualitative data in one single study which provides stronger inference than using either approach on its own [ 4 ]. In other words, a mixed-methods paper helps to understand the holistic picture from meanings obtained from interviews or observation to the prevalence of traits in a population obtained from surveys, which add depth and breadth to the study. For example, a survey questionnaire will include a limited number of structured questions, adding qualitative methods can capture other unanticipated facets of the topic that may be relevant to the research problem and help in the interpretation of the quantitative data. A good example of a mixed-methods study, it one conducted in Australia to understand the nursing care in public hospitals and also explore what factors influence adherence to nursing care [ 14 ]. Another example is a mixed-methods study that explores the relationship between nursing care practices and patient satisfaction. This study started with a quantitative survey to understand the general nursing services followed by qualitative interviews. A logistic regression analysis was performed to quantify the associations between general nursing practice variables supplemented with a thematic analysis of the interviews [ 15 ]. These research questions could not be answered if the researchers had used either qualitative or quantitative alone. Overall, this fits well with the development of evidence-based practice.

Despite the strengths of mixed-methods research but there is not much of it in nursing and other fields [ 7 ]. A recent review paper shows that the prevalence of mixed-methods studies in nursing was only 1.9% [ 7 ]. Similarly, a systematic review synthesised a total of 20 papers [ 16 ], and 16 papers [ 17 ] on nursing-related research paper among these only one mixed-methods paper was identified. Worse, a further two mixed-methods review recently revealed that out of 48 [ 18 , 19 ] synthesised nursing research papers, not one single mixed-methods paper was identified. This clearly depicts that mixed-methods research is still in its infancy stage in nursing but we can say there is huge scope to implement it to understand research questions on both sides of coin [ 4 ]. Therefore, there is a great need for mixed-methods training to enhance the evidence-based decision making in health and nursing practices.

Strengths and weaknesses of mixed-methods

There are several challenges in identifying expertise of both methods and in working with a multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, or transdisciplinary team [ 20 ]. It increases costs and resources, takes longer to complete as mixed-methods design often involves multiple stages of data collection and separate data analysis [ 4 , 5 ]. Moreover, conducting mixed-methods research does not necessarily guarantee an improvement in the quality of health research. Therefore, mixed-methods research is only appropriate when there are appropriate research questions [ 4 , 6 ].

Identifying an appropriate mixed-methods journal can also be challenging when writing mixed-methods papers [ 21 ]. Mixed-methods papers need considerably more words than single-methods papers as well as sympathetic editors who understand the underlying philosophy of a mixed-methods approach. Such papers, simply require more words. The mixed-methods researcher must be reporting two separate methods with their own characteristics, different samples, and ways of analysing, therefore needs more words to describe both methods as well as both sets of findings. Researcher needs to find a journal that accepts longer articles to help broaden existing evidence-based practice and promote its applicability in the nursing field [ 22 ].

Common mistakes in applying mixed-methods

Not all applied researchers have insight into the underlying philosophy and/or the skills to apply each set of methods appropriately. Younas and colleagues’ review identified that around one-third (29%) of mixed-methods studies did not provide an explicit label of the study design and 95% of studies did not identify the research paradigm [ 7 ]. Whilst several mixed-methods publications did not provide clear research questions covering both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Another common issue is how to collect data either concurrent or sequential and the priority is given to each approach within the study where equal or dominant which are not clearly stated in writing which is important to mention while writing in the methods section. Similarly, a commonly overlooked aspect is how to integrate both findings in a paper. The responsibility lies with the researcher to ensure that findings are sufficiently plausible and credible [ 4 ]. Therefore, intensive mixed-methods research training is required for nursing and other health practitioners to ensure its appropriate.

The way forward

Despite the recognised strengths and benefits of doing mixed-methods research, there is still only a limited number of nursing and related-health research publications using such this approach. Researchers need training in how to design, conduct, analyse, synthesise and disseminate mixed-methods research. Most importantly, they need to consider appropriate research questions that can be addressed using a mixed methods approach to add to our knowledge in evidence-based practice. In short, we need more training on mixed-methods research for a range of health researchers and health professionals.

This article discussed the research methodologies used in social sciences by students, researchers, and lectures. It looked at the qualitative method, quantitative method, and the mixed-method approaches in social sciences researches. The components of each methodology were discussed, including the data collection methods, and ethical issues (Ethical approval form, consent form, voluntary participation form). The article also assessed the overview of the methodologies which help increase knowledge of the facts in the researches. Furthermore, main objectives of conducting research and research motivating factors were also elaborated. Scientific research adopts qualitative and quantitative methodologies in the modeling and analysis of numerous phenomena. The qualitative methodology intends to understand a complex reality and the meaning of actions in a given context. On the other hand, the quantitative methodology seeks to obtain accurate and reliable measurements that allow a statistical analysis. Both methodologies offer a set of methods, potentialities and limitations that must be explored and known by researchers. This paper concisely maps a total of seven qualitative methods and five quantitative methods. A comparative analysis of the most relevant and adopted methods is done to understand the main strengths and limitations of them. Additionally, the work developed intends to be a fundamental reference for the accomplishment of a research study, in which the researcher intends to adopt a qualitative or quantitative methodology. Through the analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of each method, it becomes possible to formulate a more accurate, informed and complete choice.

The objective of this study is to provide a guide to qualitative research methodology in social sciences. It is the result of the observation that research in Management Sciences in most Universities in Cameroon is still dominated by the quantitative approach supported by economists who handle most research methodology courses. In an environment of oral tradition and the difficulties to have access to data, emphasising purely quantitative research may leave aside many aspects of the environment and several areas of human behaviour that make its specificities. Therefore, there is a need to generalise the use of qualitative research to enable researchers to always have a good insight into phenomena not yet clarified before thinking of any generalisation which is the main objective of quantitative research: this gives room to the contextualisation of research which results can easily be applied in its context, thus, enhancing development.

The aim of this review is to create awareness about uses of available social research methods and to provide a guideline in adopting appropriate methods specifically in qualitative and mixed methods research genre. Based on the review of contemporary social research methods I believe that mixed methods research produces more accurate results than relying on either qualitative or quantitative methods alone in explaining complex social issues. This paper contributes to the methodological literature in two areas. First, create awareness among social researchers and students about the available research methods in order to help them to adopt suitable research designs in addressing their particular research questions. Research design methods, such as qualitative, quantitative as well as mixed methods were introduced and subsequently each method was discussed in detail with the help of literature review as well as some personal and live examples to substantiate the findings of various literature. From various literature as well as from the own experiences, it is concluded that both qualitative research design method and quantitative research design method are equally important. It is not fair to criticize one method as the researcher is inclined towards the other method. It is practically evidenced that usage of both methods in the research, the researcher can substantiate the case better. However, duration part while using mixed methods to be kept in mind as it will take more time compared to the qualitative and quantitative methods. Hurrying and aborting in the middle due to time constraint ultimately result in poor research. It would be better if the world view towards these methods changes from criticizing mode to effective utilization mode, which will help research community in focusing and bring up better research outcomes rather than wasting time in arguing which method is scientifically acceptable and which method is biased. While I agree that the ontological, epistemological, axiological, and methodological assumptions for qualitative research method and quantitative research method, researchers should know fully about these methods and keep them as effective tools to utilize them in mixed mode, wherever it is appropriate and required to arrive at adequate research findings.

Carrying out a research paper is concerned to be a simple task. However, in practice it is far more complicated. The most important factor is for the researcher to know the main principles of the research process. It is vital to identify the research methods progression, the meaning and purpose of the research to be carried out, by the formulation of hypothesis, aims and questions, the use of methodology-both quantitative and qualitative-their characteristics and suitability when utilized, and the need of sampling and ethical considerations. By the use of theoretical framework, the current research paper firstly discusses and analyses the principles of bringing about a research paper, and most importantly it emphasizes the advantages and disadvantages of research methodology.

There's no hard and fast rule for qualitative versus quantitative research, and it's often taken for granted. It is claimed here that the divide between qualitative and quantitative research is ambiguous, incoherent, and hence of little value, and that its widespread use could have negative implications. This conclusion is supported by a variety of arguments. Qualitative researchers, for example, have varying perspectives on fundamental problems (such as the use of quantification and causal analysis), which makes the difference as such shaky. In addition, many elements of qualitative and quantitative research overlap significantly, making it difficult to distinguish between the two. Practically in the case of field research, the Qualitative and quantitative approach can't be distinguished clearly as the study pointed. The distinction may limit innovation in the development of new research methodologies, as well as cause complication and wasteful activity. As a general rule, it may be desirable not to conceptualise research approaches at such abstract levels as are done in the context of qualitative or quantitative methodologies. Discussions of the benefits and drawbacks of various research methods, rather than general research questions, are recommended.
