Haunted Mansion cast: See who's who in the Disney reboot

LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Rosario Dawson, Danny DeVito, Owen Wilson, Jamie Lee Curtis, and more bring the classic Disney parks attraction to life.

Entertainment Weekly's Oscars expert, 'RuPaul's Drag Race' beat reporter, host of 'Quick Drag' Twitter Spaces, and cohost of 'EW's BINGE' podcast. Almost all of the drag content on this site is my fault (you're welcome).

a haunted mansion 2023 cast

Picking up the floating candelabra for Disney 's big-budget reboot, director Justin Simien 's new Haunted Mansion cast lead the spirited film through a family horror tale packed with spirited references to the beloved Disneyland ride upon which writer Katie Dippold's story is based.

Led by LaKeith Stanfield , Rosario Dawson , Tiffany Haddish , Owen Wilson , Danny DeVito , Chase W. Dillon, Hasan Minhaj , Jared Leto , Winona Ryder , Dan Levy , and Jamie Lee Curtis , the Haunted Mansion cast consists of Oscar- and blockbuster-verified talent who make prime additions to the 999 happy haunts inhabiting Gracey Manor. Before the film hits theaters Friday, read on for a full breakdown of the new characters the cast portray, as well as classic Haunted Mansion staples from the ride, as conjured up by the new movie.

LaKeith Stanfield as Ben

It's not all happy haunts and moody, grim, grinning ghosts nestled within the walls of Haunted Mansion . The story of Stanfield's Ben, a New Orleans-based inventor and paranormal tour guide, packs the film with an emotional core that will move you to tears by the time the credits roll. Before Gabbie pulls him out of his mundane existence by hiring him to vanquish pesky ghouls invading her home, we learn that Ben's connection to the afterlife is rooted in the death of his beloved wife, with whom he attempts to connect by making a special camera lens that can capture ghostly images. Along the way, the grieving Ben reluctantly forges a bond with Gabbie and her son, Travis (Chase W. Dillon), that opens new spiritual pathways he never saw coming, even with the help of his camera that can "see the unseen," as he says.

Rosario Dawson as Gabbie

As a lover of vintage finds, classic architecture, and vanilla-scented candles (a recurring, laugh-out-loud gag throughout the film), Dawson's Gabbie moves herself and her young son into the film's focal home. She almost immediately regrets the decision after a suit of armor comes to life before her very eyes. The Ahsoka actress' quest to rid the haunted, humble abode of infesting ghosts leads her to hire Stanfield's Ben for $10,000 Their journey together ultimately brings them closer to the spirits inside Gracey Manor, but also intertwines the duo's souls in unexpected ways.

Tiffany Haddish as Harriet

One of the most delightful new additions to the Haunted Mansion lore, Haddish's New Orleans psychic Harriet is — as the Emmy-winning Girls Trip and Afterparty star previously told EW — a melting pot of inspiration, from Whoopi Goldberg in Ghost to Miss Cleo . Harriet joins Ben's eclectic army of supernatural sleuths, with Haddish giving arguably the most consistently hilarious performance in the movie. She helps hold the ragtag batch together by bridging the gap between the living and the dead through seances and astral projection. She also forms a close bond with her idol, the historic and legendary Madame Leota, that comes to a satisfying (crystal ball-bound) head during the film's climax.

Owen Wilson as Father Kent

The Oscar nominee provides comedic relief and a shoulder for Ben to lean on throughout the movie, as a determined (yet ill-equipped, let's just say that) paranormal "expert" who helps rid Gracey Manor of its haunting spirits. By the end of the film, audiences will see this role from the Wedding Crashers actor in a new light, after he sets in motion a tectonic shift that aides Ben's quest in monumental — and visually amusing — ways.

Danny DeVito as Professor Bruce Davis

Ben's team eventually enlists the help of Professor Bruce Davis, a wise-cracking academic played by comedic legend Danny DeVito. The Academy Award-nominated Matilda and Batman Returns performer has some of the film's funniest lines, offering up much-needed levity amid the more frightening scenes. As one of the trailers previously suggested, he even grapples with ghostly possession in a particularly harrowing sequence.

Jared Leto as Hatbox Ghost

After sinking his teeth into Morbius and an Italian meatball in House of Gucci , the Oscar-winning Dallas Buyers Club actor continues his string of transformative roles as the Hatbox Ghost, a fan-favorite character who appears in the Disneyland version of the ride and as the primary villain of the new Haunted Mansion movie. Outside of simply sending his head down from his neck and into the box in his hand (just like he does on the attraction), there's far more to Leto's menacing take on the iconic figure, who serves as Gracey Manor's most terrifying haunt — and ultimately occupies pivotal space in the Haunted Mansion narrative.

Jamie Lee Curtis as Madame Leota

Perhaps the most recognizable figure from the Haunted Mansion rides, Madame Leota had big shoes — or, well, a big crystal orb — to fill in Simien's big-screen adaptation. Curtis, a horror icon and recent Oscar-winning actress , fit the ball perfectly, playing an aesthetically similar version of the fan-favorite medium who greets riders amid a seance halfway through the Disney attraction. However, the Halloween star's role is more than just a passing set piece in the film; Leota assists Ben and the gang by providing essential information on their quest to foil the Hatbox Ghost's nefarious plot.

Hasan Minhaj as a police sketch artist

The comedian and former Daily Show performer has a brief cameo as an unnamed sketch artist working for the New Orleans Police Department, who draws a scarily (and hilariously) accurate portrait of the Hatbox Ghost after listening to a description from Ben and Bruce.

Dan Levy and Winona Ryder as Crump Manor tour guides

Both Levy and Ryder appear for mere moments in Haunted Mansion , but they have some of the most amusing dialogue of the entire film. Ryder plays Pat, a snarky tour guide who assists Ben, Father Kent, and Travis with their upcoming stay inside Crump Manor — a similarly haunted abode that seemingly holds the key to resolving Gracey Manor's paranormal predicament. But first, the Schitt's Creek star's character — also a tour guide — serenades the group with his brief rendition of the beloved Disney tune "It's a Small World" on the piano.

Chase W. Dillon as Travis

Dillon plays Travis, Gabbie's young son who plays a vital role in the fight against the Hatbox Ghost's army of vengeful spirits. The 13-year-old Harder They Fall and Underground Railroad actor is a revelation in the role, keeping up with comedy heavyweights like DeVito and Haddish, thanks to sharp wit and comedic timing indicative of a star in the making.

‘Haunted Mansion’ Release Date, Cast, Trailer and Everything We Know So Far

Welcome, foolish mortals

haunted-mansion-rosario-dawson

When hinges creak in doorless chambers, and strange and frightening sounds echo through the halls. Whenever candle lights flicker where the air is deathly still — that is the time when ghosts are present, practicing their terror with ghoulish delight!

So begins the narration for The Haunted Mansion, an attraction that originally opened in Disneyland, just outside of Anaheim, California, in 1969. One of the last attractions that Walt Disney had a hand in, a haunted house of some kind can be seen on early artwork for the Disneyland Park and was waylaid first by Walt’s involvement in the 1964-65 World’s Fair and then, of course, his untimely death.

But since the attraction opened it has become an absolute classic, inspiring versions of the attraction at the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World, Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland. When you think of Disney Parks, chances are you think of the Haunted Mansion.

But, like any good Disney property, it has stretched (much like the famous stretching room) into other aspects of the company – there is countless merchandise, a 2003 film, the “Muppet Haunted Mansion” Disney+ Halloween special and now, a brand-new 2023 “Haunted Mansion” movie called, simply, “Haunted Mansion” (it’s cleaner). And we have all the details for what you should know about the new movie.

Is There a Trailer for “Haunted Mansion” 2023?

There is! And it’s actually really great, utilizing the same mixture of spooky/funny tones that make the original attraction so memorable (it also wonderfully utilizes Roy Orbison’s “My House Without Windows”).

What Is the Release Date for “Haunted Mansion?”

“Haunted Mansion” is a big summer movie, think Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, and as such will be released on July 28, 2023. We love a good summertime fright!

Is “Haunted Mansion” a Remake?

It’s not a remake. There was another movie, based on the original Disney attraction, released in 2003 and starring Eddie Murphy. But that movie had a completely different storyline and characters, even if it borrowed from similar elements of the ride. This new version is (in the words of another Halloween icon David S. Pumpkins) its own thing — and one that Disney is very high on. Could there be “Haunted Mansion” sequels on the way? Only Madame Leota with her crystal ball probably knows.

a haunted mansion 2023 cast

So, What Is “Haunted Mansion” About?

This new “Haunted Mansion” concerns a single mom (played by Rosario Dawson) who moves into a spooky (but surprisingly affordable) mansion outside of New Orleans, with her young son. Soon, she realizes that the ghostly forces are more than she bargained for. In order to combat the otherworldly evil, she calls on a ragtag group of supernatural researchers for help.

Who’s in the “Haunted Mansion” 2023 Cast?

Besides Dawson, the cast includes LaKeith Stanfield (as a supernatural investigator), Owen Wilson (as a priest), Tiffany Haddish (as a psychic) and Danny DeVito (as a college history professor). Additionally, several iconic characters from the attraction make an appearance, like Jamie Lee Curtis (as Madame Leota) and Jared Leto as the Hatbox Ghost. Winona Ryder, Hasan Minhaj and Dan Levy also make appearances in unidentified roles.

Will There be Easter Eggs for the Ride?

Paul Giamatti, Martin Scorsese and Meryl Streep in Palm Springs

Oh, there will be tons of Easter eggs.

Who’s Making “Haunted Mansion?”

“Haunted Mansion” is directed by Justin Simien, who directed “Dear White People” and “Bad Hair” (which similarly mixed horror and comedy). Perhaps more crucially, Simien was once a cast member at Disneyland, meaning his knowledge of the Haunted Mansion is deep and pure.

The film was written by Kate Dippold, a former “Parks and Recreation” writer who wrote “The Heat” with Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy and Paul Feig’s unfairly maligned “Ghostbusters” reboot; and produced by Dan Lin, who has worked on everything from “The LEGO Movie” to Disney’s live-action “Aladdin” remake to “Godzilla vs. Kong.”

The Haunted Mansion Trailer Takes You for a Ride

Portrait of Jason P. Frank

Boo! Sorry, did we scare you? Then get prepped for spooky, ooky, kooky, and creepy ride on the Haunted Mansion . The upcoming remake of the 2003 film just released its official trailer, in which a family attempts to last in a house of horrors. No, it’s not David Harbour and Lily Allen’s townhouse with carpeted bathrooms. Starring Rosario Dawson, LaKeith Stanfield, and Chase W. Dillon as the residents, alongside Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Dan Levy, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Jared Leto as the spooks, the film was directed by Justin Simien of Dear White People fame. In the trailer, we see water ghosts that want to drown you, ghosts in mirrors that want to thrown an axe at you, and Hasan Minhaj as a sketch artist who is not quite sure that you were mugged by a ghost. The remake of the 2003 original starring Eddie Murphy will be out in theaters July 28. Boo! Got you again.

'Haunted Mansion': Trailer, Release Date, Cast, and What to Expect

When will we see 999 happy haunts grace the big screen?

Quick Links

What is the release date for haunted mansion, watch the trailer for haunted mansion, what is the plot of haunted mansion, who is making haunted mansion, who's starring in haunted mansion.

The Walt Disney Company has become no stranger to adapting its original attractions into feature films. Certainly, the most well-known and successful example is the Pirates of the Caribbean series, which had a grand total of five films and created a modern pop culture icon with Captain Jack Sparrow. Since then, Disney has always been looking to make their theme park attractions into feature films, with examples including The Country Bears (2002), Tomorrowland (2015), and Jungle Cruise (2021). It's a concept that's showing no signs of stopping, with Hawkeye (2021) directors Bert & Bertie set to helm a film based on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. The one ride at Walt Disney parks that should be a no-brainer to adapt though is the Haunted Mansion . With its iconic visuals and surprisingly deep lore, it should be the perfect candidate for a feature film, and Disney did try to capitalize on the popular attraction nearly two decades ago with 2003's The Haunted Mansion , starring Eddie Murphy . With a comedian like Murphy in the lead role, you could probably imagine that his take on the ride was very comedic. Now it's true that the ride has always had a very on-the-nose sense of humor, but the film adaptation lacked the creepy charm of the ride and leaned too heavily on the jokes, not to mention iconic characters like the Hat Box Ghost and the Black Widow Bride were nowhere to be found.

Director Justin Simien , the filmmaker behind Dear White People (2014) and a former Disneyland cast member, looks to make his own cinematic adaption of the beloved attraction, complete with a prestigious number of creatives and an absolutely star-studded cast on board. From what was shown at their presence at 2022's D23 Expo, it's looking to be an incredibly promising adventure-horror hybrid. To get the scoop on the information that was shared at D23 behind closed doors as well as everything else we know so far, simply continue to read below.

Fans of the legendary attraction were treated to the first public look at Haunted Mansion when the spooky teaser trailer premiered on March 2nd . The footage opens up with the character of Gabbie ( Rosario Dawson ) and her young son Travis ( Chase W. Dillon ) as they enter their new home which of course is the titular Haunted Mansion. It doesn't take long for them to realize that the home is infested with restless ghouls, leading to them contacting an ambitious priest ( Owen Wilson ), a down-on-his-luck tour guide (LaKeith Stanfield), and a wise medium ( Tiffany Haddish ) to uncover the mystery behind the unsettling abode. Also seen in the trailer are some recognizable ghosts from the ride, such as the Black Widow Bride and the Hat Box Ghost ( Jared Leto ).

We also got an extended look at the film when Justin Simien took the stage at the Disney & Pixar Studio Showcase at D23, he premiered an extended trailer introducing the characters and world of this new version of Haunted Mansion . Unfortunately for those who weren't able to attend the showcase, the footage was exclusive to the panel and hasn't been released online. Thankfully Collider's own Therese Lacson was in attendance and wrote an in-depth description of the footage reveal which you can check out by clicking here. To give a brief summary, the trailer opens by introducing the main characters of Ben, Kent, Gabbie, and Harriet, as they explore the mysterious mansion and eventually find a room that resembles that of the one that Madame Leotta resides in, otherwise known as the sorceress head trapped inside a crystal ball. The rest of the trailer shows more creepy ghost-like imagery and introduces even more wacky characters like an eccentric college professor ( Danny DeVito ).

More recently, we got a new teaser for Haunted Mansion on June 8 that shows LaKeith Stanfield's Ben being introduced to the mansion, then moving on to scenes of various guests being spooked out by the mansion's ghostly residents.

A behind-the-scenes featurette was released online by Disney on June 23, 2023. The spot features Justin Simien and the cast talking about making the movie and paying tribute to the popular ride that inspired it. The trailer also revealed a new look at the Hat-Box Ghost. On June 28, Disney released a new teaser for Haunted Mansion to announce that the tickets are on sale. It also provides some more deliciously scary footage of the Hat-Box Ghost and you can see it in the player below:

Since tickets went on sale, Disney has released a steady stream of clips from Haunted Mansion and we also got a behind-the-scenes featurette featuring the director and cast. See it below:

A new trailer for Haunted Mansion was released on July 18, with a narration from Gabby that unfolds the spookiness of moving into the mansion. It then moves on to show us more of the cast, including a new look at the Hat-Box Ghost. Here it is:

Plot details are pretty thin and the trailer didn't do much to elaborate further on the general plot, but an official synopsis shed a bit more light on the film's story:

"A single mom named Gabbie hires a tour guide, a psychic, a priest, and a historian to help exorcise their newly bought mansion; after discovering it is inhabited by ghosts."

We already know that Gabbie will be played by Rosario Dawson ( Ahsoka ), LaKeith Stanfield's ( Sorry to Bother You ) Ben will be the tour guide and Owen Wilson's ( Loki ) Kent will be the priest, and we assume that Tiffany Haddish's Harriet is the psychic and Danny DeVito's unnamed professor is the historian.

As for the ghosts who are set to appear, we do know that the Hatbox Ghost will almost certainly be appearing. An infamous part of the attraction that only returned to the ride somewhat recently, Hatbox Ghost was heavily implied at the event to be played by Jared Leto ( Morbius ). We also know that the Bride will also be a part of the film, and she is a character that has quite the backstory. Most of the "happy haunts" in the Haunted Mansion are just that; happy. They might give people a good scare sometimes, but overall they're not malicious or cruel...except the Bride. Originally named Constance Hatchaway, it's heavily insinuated that she killed her husband (or husbands) and now stalks the mansion looking for her next victim. Initially, horror and practical effects legend and the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind The Shape of Water (2017), Guillermo Del Toro . Like many of Del Toro's projects, this one just wasn't meant to be for the accomplished writer/director, but Justin Simien is a worthy replacement. Simien has made a name for himself as one of the biggest rising stars in storytelling today, being involved with both the hugely successful 2014 Dear White People film and the critically acclaimed Netflix series of the same name. Simien is also set to have a long history with Disney, as he's also become attached to the upcoming Lando series.

Even though he's no longer directing the project, Del Toro is still credited with writing the screenplay for the film along with D. V. DeVincentis ( High Fidelity ) and Katie Dippold ( The Heat ) also co-writing. This is good news for those wishing for Del Toro's directorial vision of the film as this likely means many of his ideas will make their way into the film. Del Toro will also be involved as executive producer as well. The rest of the ghostly crew consists of composer Kris Bowers ( King Richard ), cinematographer Jeffery Waldron ( Little Fires Everywhere ), editor Phillip J. Bartell ( Bad Hair ), production designer Darren Gilford ( TRON: Legacy ), and costume designer Jeffery Kurland ( Collateral ).

We've already mentioned most of the major leading characters set to appear, including LaKeith Stanfield, Owen Wilson, Rosario Dawson, Tiffany Haddish, and Jared Leto. Leto, who again is most likely playing the Hat Box Ghost, was one of many new casting revelations revealed at D23. The remaining cast members include Winona Ryder ( Beetlejuice ), Dan Levy ( Schitt's Creek ), Hasan Minhaj ( The Daily Show ) as a sketch artist, and finally, Jamie Lee Curtis ( Halloween Ends ), who made a grand entrance at the Studio Showcase in her very own "Doom Buggy". Curtis will be playing Madame Leota.

Haunted Mansion: Plot, Cast, Release Date, and Everything Else We Know

Prepare for a spine-tingling adventure in Disney's Haunted Mansion. Iconic ghosts, star-studded cast, and eerie visuals await on July 28, 2023.

  • "Disney is bringing the iconic Haunted Mansion attraction to life once again, this time with an exciting adventure-horror mashup film."
  • "With a star-studded cast including Rosario Dawson, Owen Wilson, and Tiffany Haddish, the film promises strong performances to keep fans interested."
  • "Fans can look forward to the release of The Haunted Mansion on July 28, 2023, after some changes in the initial release date."

The Walt Disney Company has a lengthy history of making renowned theme park attractions into full-length motion pictures . The Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise, which gave us the chance to see Captain Jack Sparrow for the first time, is one of this endeavor's most famous triumphs. Disney has persisted on pursuing this idea throughout time, turning popular attractions into motion pictures. With a brand-new movie, they are now prepared to take on the scary and venerable Haunted Mansion experience.

With movies like The Country Bears, Tomorrowland , and Jungle Cruise , Disney has continued this tendency over the years. Now they're back at it , with Hawkeye filmmakers Bert & Bertie prepared to tackle the exhilarating Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. The renowned Haunted Mansion ride, though, looks like it might be the ideal choice for a full film adaptation.

The Haunted Mansion is a classic attraction because of its eerie mythology and mesmerizing scenery. It is a perfect choice for a feature film adaptation, and Disney is getting ready to release an exciting adventure-horror mashup.

The Haunted Mansion was attempted in 2003, starring Eddie Murphy, but it lacked the spooky allure of the original ride and was missing recognizable characters like the Hat Box Ghost and the Black Widow Bride. Acclaimed filmmaker Justin Simien , best known for Dear White People, now takes his cinematic vision to the Haunted Mansion. Simien pledges to provide an engaging and exhilarating experience on the big screen as a lifetime fan of the attraction and a former member of the Disneyland cast.

The narrative centers on Gabbie, portrayed by the great Rosario Dawson, a single mother who relocates with her young son Travis (Chase W. Dillon) to a curiously cheap home just outside of New Orleans. They quickly become aware that they are not alone as they begin to settle into their new house.

They turn to an ambitious priest named Kent (Owen Wilson), a down-on-his-luck tour guide named Ben (LaKeith Stanfield), and a savvy medium named Harriet (Tiffany Haddish) for assistance since the estate is overrun with restless ghosts. Together, this ragtag group of spiritual specialists set out on an exciting and terrifying journey to discover the truth behind the creepy hauntings at the estate.

Star-studded actors from the entertainment world make up the Haunted Mansion cast. Tiffany Haddish plays Harriet, the psychic, while LaKeith Stanfield plays Ben, the paranormal guide, with Rosario Dawson as Gabbie, Owen Wilson as Kent, the priest, and Danny DeVito as Bruce, the historian.

The Hat Box Ghost will also be brought to life by Jared Leto, while Madame Leota will be portrayed by Jamie Lee Curtis, further to the film's spooky attractiveness. Winona Ryder plays Pat, a New Orleans tour guide, Hasan Minhaj plays a sketch artist, and Dan Levy plays an unspecified part in the ensemble cast. The film promises to produce strong performances that will keep fans interested throughout, thanks to its skilled cast.

Due to its spooky surroundings and fascinating history, The Haunted Mansion has long been a favorite among tourists. In 2003, Disney released The Haunted Mansion , starring Eddie Murphy, in an effort to capitalize on the attraction's enduring appeal. Murphy had unquestionable comic ability, but the movie's translation missed the thrills of the ride since it concentrated too much on humor and omitted iconic characters like the Hat Box Ghost and the Black Widow Bride.

Thankfully, Dear White People filmmaker Justin Simien, who was formerly a cast member at Disneyland, will be in charge of a new film version of the popular ride. The 2023 Haunted Mansion seems to be a thrilling adventure-horror mashup with a team of imaginative thinkers and an A-list ensemble.

Release Date

Mark your calendars, as the spirits of the Haunted Mansion will make their presence felt on July 28, 2023. The movie's release date went through a few changes, originally slated for March 10, 2023, then moved to August 11, 2023, before finally settling on its current date. Fans got their first glimpse of the Haunted Mansion with the spooky teaser trailer that premiered on March 2.

The trailer introduces Gabbie and her young son Travis as they move into their new home, the infamous Haunted Mansion. They quickly discover that the mansion is infested with restless ghouls, leading them to seek help from an ambitious priest (Owen Wilson), a down-on-his-luck tour guide (LaKeith Stanfield), and a wise medium (Tiffany Haddish). Iconic ghosts from the ride, such as the Black Widow Bride and The Hat Box Ghost (Jared Leto), also make their eerie appearances.

The Shape of Water director Guillermo Del Toro was originally slated to helm Haunted Mansion . However, Justin Simien came in as an alternative after Del Toro's script was rejected as being too frightful. Simien, a lifetime admirer of the Haunted Mansion ride , lends a special viewpoint to the movie thanks to his profound grasp of the ride's spirit.

Del Toro still obtains credit for co-writing the script with D. V. DeVincentis and Katie Dippold, even though he is no longer the director. This makes sure that the film reflects Del Toro's ideas and style. Del Toro also contributes to the overall tone of the movie as an executive producer.

Haunted Mansion (2023) Review: A Spooktacular Adventure with a Star-Studded Cast

Introduction.

Step right up to Disney’s “Haunted Mansion,” a thrilling and spooky adventure that brings the beloved Disneyland attraction to life once again. This time, with a talented all-star cast and a fresh approach, “Haunted Mansion” is set to captivate audiences of all ages with its scary story and rollicking thrills.

A New Twist on an Old Tale

“Haunted Mansion” is not the first attempt to bring the eerie world of the Disneyland ride to the big screen. In 2003, “The Haunted Mansion” was adapted into a clunky action-comedy starring Eddie Murphy. However, the 2023 version takes a different path, featuring a more talented cast and an experienced team behind the scenes, led by director Justin Simien and screenwriter Katie Dippold.

The All-Star Cast

The cast of “Haunted Mansion” reads like a who’s who of Hollywood talent, with LaKeith Stanfield, Rosario Dawson, Owen Wilson, Tiffany Haddish, Danny DeVito, Winona Ryder, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Jared Leto headlining the film. Each actor brings their unique flair to their respective characters, making for a delightful ensemble that keeps the audience engaged throughout the movie.

Unraveling the Mystery

The film follows Ben Matthias (LaKeith Stanfield), a widowed inventor and paranormal tour guide in New Orleans. Disillusioned after years of searching for spirits with no success, Ben is reluctantly drawn into a new mystery when Gabbie (Rosario Dawson), a single mother who just moved into a haunted mansion, seeks his help to rid her home of ghosts. Alongside an excitable professor (Danny DeVito), an overconfident medium (Tiffany Haddish), and a quirky priest (Owen Wilson), Ben embarks on a thrilling adventure to solve the mystery and protect Gabbie and her son Travis (Chase Dillon) from a malevolent spirit.

Bringing the Ride to Life

“Haunted Mansion” successfully brings the iconic Haunted Mansion ride to life on the big screen. The film artfully incorporates familiar elements from the attraction, from moving paintings to the hitchhiking ghosts. It cleverly weaves these elements into the plot, making them integral to the story rather than mere nods to the ride’s legacy.

Standout Performances

LaKeith Stanfield shines as the troubled hero, Ben Matthias. His performance adds depth and intensity to the character, making him a compelling lead for the film. Owen Wilson’s quirky portrayal of Father Kent adds a touch of unpredictability to the story, while Tiffany Haddish brings her signature moxie to the role of the medium. Jamie Lee Curtis also stands out, having a blast playing the theatrical Madame Leota.

Room for Improvement

While “Haunted Mansion” delivers on kid-friendly scares and offers a thrilling ride, some critics find that the film doesn’t fully come together. It may be slightly hurried in its storytelling and may have some uneven moments in the third act. However, overall, it remains an entertaining family adventure.

Final Verdict

Disney’s “Haunted Mansion” (2023) is a spooky and fun-filled movie that does justice to the iconic attraction. With its talented cast, clever incorporation of ride elements, and suspenseful storytelling, it promises an enjoyable cinematic experience for both young and old alike.

“Haunted Mansion” is set to hit theaters on July 28, 2023, and promises to be a must-see for Disney fans seeking some chilling summer fun. So, if you’re ready for a thrilling journey into the realm of ghosts and ghouls, be sure to mark your calendars for this exciting reboot of the classic attraction. Happy haunting!

Haunted Mansion's Big Cameos, Explained

Disney's Haunted Mansion has a fairly big cast, with Rosario Dawson and Owen Wilson among the many, but it has room for some comedic cameos as well.

The following contains spoilers for Haunted Mansion, now playing in theaters.

Disney's Haunted Mansion tweaks the story from the 2003 original in a big way as it details the story of Rosario Dawson's Gabbie and her son, Travis. They're forced to lure others to their haunted home as part of a mysterious specter's scheme. No matter what, no one can leave until it gets what it wants.

This results in LaKeith Stanfield's Ben (a tour guide), Owen Wilson's Father Kent, Danny DeVito's Professor Bruce Davis, and Tiffany Haddish's psychic Harriet unwittingly joining up. They eventually have to unite to stop the being, which leads to a wild adventure all over New Orleans. As this occurs, Haunted Mansion 's cast grows, revealing some funny cameos.

Jo Koy as the Bartender

Haunted Mansion 's first act confirms Ben was actually an astrophysicist who married a ghost tour guide, Alyssa. Sadly, tragedy struck, leaving Ben alone. The present-day has him taking up her job, minus the ghost stuff. However, Ben's broken and found day drinking in a Louisiana bar. The unnamed daytime bartender is played by Jo Koy, who begs Ben to shower and clean up for his next tour.

Koy fans will appreciate his role after taking to his many comedy specials on Netflix and Comedy Central. The standup has shone on specials like Lights Out and In His Elements . Koy has also done work on shows like Mr. Iglesias , Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens , and the dysfunctional family comedy, Easter Sunday . It's short but sweet and will probably have his fans wishing he was featured more.

Hasan Minhaj as a Sketch Artist

Ben and Bruce go to the police to try to get the Hatbox Ghost (Jared Leto) drawn. They need to find his human form so they can get some of his belongings for a banishing ritual. It's hilarious as the room can't believe Ben's fake story about a smiling, skinless ghoul robbing him.

The unnamed artist who does the sketch is none other than Hasan Minhaj. Fans would recognize Minhaj for his political comedy. He's gained notoriety for Netflix's Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj . Minhaj has also hosted the White House Correspondents' Dinner while doing bits (including a guest hosting stint) on The Daily Show . He's had smaller roles in movies like The Spy Who Dumped Me , but he connected with comic book fans in a big way when he voiced Riddler in 2022's Batman Unburied podcast.

Winona Ryder as a Tour Guide

Winona Ryder plays Pat, a tour guide whom Ben and Travis meet at the Crump estate. They head there to try to get the belongings for the ritual after the sketch confirms the Hatbox Ghost's identity. They learn more about the villain, Alistair Crump, on a lengthy tour. However, Pat shoots down all of Ben's questions about which objects in the house are authentic. They're all props, leaving Ben frustrated.

Ryder delivers all her lines with sass, nodding to some of her funnier roles. These include Edward Scissorhands and Heathers . She's also been in darker films such as Bram Stoker's Dracula . Notably, Ryder experienced a revival over the years thanks to Stranger Things . For fans disappointed she doesn't interact with ghouls, that'll change in 2024 when she reprises her role as Lydia in Beetlejuice 2 .

Daniel Levy as a Tour Guide

Pat's tour has another guide helping out in this adaption of the iconic theme park ride . It's Daniel Levy's Vic, who dresses up as Sherlock Holmes and helps the patrons in a game akin to Clue . He wants them all involved in uncovering the mystery of Alistair's death, which annoys Ben as they don't know they're glamorizing a killer.

It's another short cameo, but it's fun for those who enjoy Levy's outlandish performances in shows like Schitt's Creek . He was also in Hulu's 2020 Christmas flick, Happiest Season . Levy will next be seen in Season 4 of Sex Education , and like Koy, it feels like he could have been used a tad more, given his humorous talents.

To see all of these cameos, Haunted Mansion is now in theaters.

Haunted mansion was a scary good time but never got a proper chance, a haunting in venice perfectly blends horror and mystery, no hard feelings brought back raunchy comedies, the marvels soars above expectations but not criticism, renfield captures classic dracula with a hilarious twist, plane is a clever action-survival story, cocaine bear is a wild time while blending humor into a creature feature, the creator is a sci-fi movie the world needs but isn't ready for, dungeons & dragons: honor among thieves brings classic fantasy to modern audiences, teenage mutant ninja turtles: mutant mayhem was great but lacked massive praise.

2023 was a significant year for cinema , with movie studios learning the value of giving great creative minds the freedom to tell their own stories, with the likes of Oppenheimer and Barbie taking the box office by storm. 2023 was also a year that saw superhero movies decline slightly in audience interest and made way for new mega franchises like The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

The future appears to be in video game adaptations, toy-based storytelling, and original, creative-led releases. Hollywood will continue to shift, but among 2023's many big-budget, franchise-led, and smaller properties, there were some flops and underrated hits. Indeed, audiences weren't predictable this past year, and critics ridiculed films that deserved another shot. These movies haven't been positive talking points over the last year, but have certainly brought something unique to the table that is worth revisiting.

Haunted Mansion

A single mom named Gabbie hires a tour guide, a psychic, a priest and a historian to help exorcise her newly bought mansion after discovering it is inhabited by ghosts.

Disney has not had a great track record in the live-action department, especially when it comes to adapting theme park attractions . While Pirates of the Caribbean was a massive success, the studio has continued chasing those heights. There have been two previous versions of Haunted Mansion, and the Muppets iteration is probably still the measuring stick.

However, the most recent installment to this Halloween-esque lore wasn't given a fair shot. Releasing in the middle of summer, it's obvious that audiences would have reacted better had Haunted Mansion been launched during the spooky season. But even though it was released in the wrong season, it's visually stunning, inventive, pays homage to the ride in just the right way, and contains genuine scares. The fun and frightful flick could become a Halloween classic down the line.

A Haunting in Venice

In post-World War II Venice, Poirot, now retired and living in his own exile, reluctantly attends a seance. But when one of the guests is murdered, it is up to the former detective to once again uncover the killer.

10 Most Interesting Ghosts in the Haunted Mansion

It's usually very challenging to redefine the tone of an ongoing cinematic series, especially one that has already seen ample success in its familiar format. However, Kenneth Branagh's series of Agatha Christie adaptations took on a new form with the release of A Haunting In Venice.

Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile had well-established Branagh's take on Poirot as a classic reimagining of the murder mystery genre. However, A Haunting In Venice's commitment to its horror premise makes this the most compelling entry into the saga yet. Although it went by largely unnoticed, A Haunting In Venice took risks and should have been awarded for them. Not enough people are talking about this step up for the series.

No Hard Feelings

On the brink of losing her home, Maddie finds an intriguing job listing: helicopter parents looking for someone to bring their introverted 19-year-old son out of his shell before college. She has one summer to make him a man or die trying.

Hollywood has been averse in recent years to putting their backing behind original comedies. Across the 2000s, there was a real push to get great, low-budget comedies on the big screen, but big blockbuster events have meant that, across the 2010s and into the 2020s, the genre has been diminished. No Hard Feelings was an attempt to right that wrong.

Critics weren't too generous to the bawdy comedy, which made the most of its star power with Jennifer Lawrence. While audiences reacted well to the ridiculous premise and the low-budget production more than made its money back, No Hard Feelings was not the runaway hit it could have been. Audiences need to keep supporting comedy in cinemas for the genre to thrive once more, but No Hard Feelings ultimately fell too under the radar at the time of its release.

The Marvels

Carol Danvers gets her powers entangled with those of Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau, forcing them to work together to save the universe.

There have been countless think pieces about the potential death of the MCU, as analysts suggest that audiences are starting to lose interest in Marvel movies. The performance of projects like Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 provide evidence to the contrary, but poor quality releases like Secret Invasion on Disney+ and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania haven't helped.

The Marvels has been the victim of this discourse, with critics hoping that the movie played into the death of the MCU narrative. In truth, The Marvels is a spectacular film that takes genuine risks. It's entertaining, fun, fast-paced, and far surpasses some of the releases in Marvel's earlier phases. Sure, the villain wasn't handled correctly , but the political and cinematic conversation around The Marvels, alongside Disney+'s streaming plan, led to the film getting abandoned unfairly.

Renfield, Dracula's henchman and inmate at the lunatic asylum for decades, longs for a life away from the Count, his various demands, and all of the bloodshed that comes with them.

It's wise for a studio to take a risk on a lower-budget, horror-infused comedy, especially when it's attached to a pre-existing intellectual property. There's a level of interest baked into Renfield, with the title playing on the nostalgia of the old Universal monster movies and adapting one of fiction's most powerful vampires . While the Dark Universe never got its proper start, Renfield acts as an alternative approach to that familiar material.

However, the performances given by stars Nicholas Cage, Nicholas Hoult, and Awkwafina elevate the piece beyond its dusty origins. This modernized retelling of a well-worn narrative should have ensured that audiences were drawn in by the unique creative choices made throughout Renfield's development. Alas, those eccentric performances and adept screenplay didn't inspire viewers as much as they should have.

10 Action Movies To Watch This Holiday Season

Despite its star power, Plane was always perceived as having a straight-to-DVD quality. The plot wasn't overly ambitious, and the budget didn't match the lofty box office expectations placed on the project. Plane could have easily towed genre conventions and would eventually be placed as another expected and wholly unoriginal action flick in a year full of familiarity.

Yet, Plane manages to subvert those assumptions, ensuring that genuine stakes and compelling emotional arcs drive the narrative forward. Although the truly tense and well-choreographed action sequences are worth the price of admission alone, it's the uneasy dynamic of leads Gerad Butler and Mike Colter and the compelling drive to return home that gives viewers a little more to chew on.

Cocaine Bear

An oddball group of cops, criminals, tourists and teens converge on a Georgia forest where a huge black bear goes on a murderous rampage after unintentionally ingesting cocaine.

When it was first announced, Cocaine Bear led to more than a few scratched heads. The bombastic tale of a bear that had consumed a lethal array of narcotics didn't seem like the most promising narrative launching pad. But, what was delivered was a bizarre, comedic, terrifying, and frankly genius low-budget flick well worth the price of admission.

Cocaine Bear got people talking, and good word of mouth led to a respectable performance at the box office. Frankly, though, the originality and the riskiness of Cocaine Bear deserved better. There will doubtlessly be a variety of straight-to-DVD inspired-by scary bear copycats about to hit the market, but none will match the ambition or, quite frankly, the bold absurdity of the original.

The Creator

Against the backdrop of a war between humans and robots with artificial intelligence, a former soldier finds the secret weapon, a robot in the form of a young child.

The Creator's Biggest Plot Holes & Unanswered Questions

There's been a lot of discourse around the sheer number of franchise installments and adaptations on the big screen, limiting opportunities for more original science fiction storytelling. Fans suggest that if only there was a brand-new work to stick their teeth into, they'd turn out in their droves. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case.

The Creator was an inspiring and creative endeavor that aimed to paint a different type of sci-fi universe. It certainly wasn't without its flaws, but its visuals, characterizations, and world-building were second to none. Audiences should have turned out in their droves to support something wholly unique, but the rhetoric never matched up with fan reactions.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

A charming thief and a band of unlikely adventurers embark on an epic quest to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people.

There's a need for a cinematic fantasy franchise right now. Tolkien's work is still sorely absent from the big screen, and the Wizarding World has fallen by the wayside. Although shows like House of the Dragon and The Witcher serve the genre on the small screen, fans need something bigger.

Dungeons & Dragons promised to be that franchise starter and was beloved by TTRPG players and casual audiences alike. Honor Among Thieves did everything right and yet still didn't quite launch the franchise into the stratosphere. A continued commitment to the D&D saga, especially after Baldur's Gate III's performance, should hopefully steer the series onto bigger and better things. But Honor Among Thieves is simply too good to receive a middling box office.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem

The film follows the Turtle brothers as they work to earn the love of New York City while facing down an army of mutants.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse started a new wave of experimentation within the animation industry. Studios became braver with their artistic styles, moving away from the PIXAR method that had defined a generation. The latest film to be affected by this shifting landscape was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, an all-around enjoyable adaptation of the titular reptiles.

With a team of creative juggernauts behind it and toy sales that speak to the film's supposed popularity, Mutant Mayhem should have been a hit on the level of the Spider-Verse films. But its creativity and visual ingenuity were not rewarded accordingly. This isn't the end for this particular retelling of the classic tale, but hopefully, audiences will come around to this latest rendition of the pizza-loving gang.

2023 Box Office Lessons: Audiences Sought Comfort, Skipped Spectacle

Movie audiences flocked to Taylor Swift, “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” but were cooler toward returning superheroes like the Flash, Captain Marvel and Aquaman.

An illustration depicts the disembodied head of the Indiana Jones character shrinking as it moves left to right.

By Brooks Barnes

Reporting from Los Angeles

Hollywood’s movie factories run on conventional wisdom — entrenched notions, based on experience, about what types of films are likely to pop at the global box office.

This year, audiences turned many of those so-called rules on their heads.

Superheroes have long been seen as the most reliable way to fill seats. But characters like Captain Marvel, the Flash, Ant-Man, Shazam and Blue Beetle failed to excite moviegoers. Over the weekend, “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” which cost more than $200 million to make and tens of millions more to market, arrived to a disastrous $28 million in ticket sales in the United States and Canada. Overseas moviegoers chipped in another $80 million.

In the meantime, the biggest movie of the year at the box office, “Barbie,” with $1.44 billion in worldwide ticket sales, was directed by a woman , based on a very female toy and spray-painted pink — ingredients that most studios have long seen as limiting audience appeal. An old movie-industry maxim holds that women will go to a “guy” movie but not vice versa.

“ The Super Mario Bros. Movie ” collected $1.36 billion, a second-place result that also stunned Hollywood; studios have a troubled history with game adaptations. “Oppenheimer,” a three-hour period drama about a physicist, rounded out the top three, taking in $952 million and contradicting the prevailing belief that, in the streaming era, films for grown-ups are not viable in theaters.

“Without question, change is afoot — audiences are in a different mood,” said David A. Gross, a film consultant who publishes a newsletter on box office numbers. “The country and the world are not in the same place. We’ve had seven years of divisive politics, a severe pandemic, two serious wars, climate change and inflation. Moviegoers seem less interested in being overwhelmed with spectacle and saving the universe than being spoken to, entertained and inspired.”

The biggest box office surprises of the year fell into the “spoken to” category. “ Sound of Freedom ,” a crime drama that cost $15 million to make, catered to the far right, an audience largely ignored by Hollywood, and generated $248 million in ticket sales, on a par with “The Eras Tour,” which targeted Taylor Swift fans and also cost about $15 million.

“Sound of Freedom” came from Angel Studios, an independent company in Provo, Utah, that supported the film with an unorthodox “Pay It Forward” program, which let supporters buy tickets online for those who otherwise might not see it. In a big break from Hollywood norms , Ms. Swift cut out the middle company (a studio) and made a distribution deal directly with AMC Entertainment, the world’s largest theater operator.

“Our phone has been dancing off the hooks since the day we announced the ‘Eras Tour’ project,” Adam Aron, AMC’s chief executive, told investors on a conference call in November, referring to “alternative content” opportunities.

Comscore, which compiles box office data, projected on Sunday that North American ticket sales for the year would reach about $9 billion, a 20 percent increase from 2022. (Before the pandemic, North American theaters reliably sold about $11 billion in tickets annually.) The average price for an adult general admission ticket in the United States was $12.14, up from $11.75, according to EntTelligence, a research firm.

Worldwide ticket sales are expected to exceed $33 billion, an increase of 27 percent, partly because of a surge in Latin America. (Before the pandemic, worldwide ticket sales easily exceeded $40 billion annually.)

Hollywood’s climb back from the pandemic is expected to stall in 2024. With fewer movies scheduled for release — studio pipelines were disrupted by the recent strikes — ticket sales will decline 5 to 11 percent next year, depending on the market, according to projections from Gower Street Analytics, a box office research firm.

Reading box-office tea leaves is like pontificating about symbolism in works of fiction: Any halfway plausible theory works. But studio bosses need something, anything, to guide them as they make billion-dollar judgment calls for the seasons ahead.

Here are five takeaways from this year:

Moviegoers want comfort.

People reach for nostalgia in times of stress, and movies that reminded audiences of the past — while also managing to feel fresh — have been succeeding. “Barbie,” “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Wonka” and the retro-feeling “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” allowed people to revisit their childhoods. “Insidious: The Red Door” hit pay dirt by bringing back the franchise’s original stars.

“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” could have tapped into nostalgia to become a hit. Instead, a huffing and puffing Harrison Ford, 81, simply reminded Indy fans that they, too, are getting old. “Dial of Destiny” cost Disney $295 million to make and took in a flaccid $384 million. (Theaters keep roughly 50 percent of ticket sales.)

Art film has a pulse.

Sophisticated dramas with modest budgets and aimed at older audiences have been showing signs of life after two years in the box office I.C.U.

The streaming era has forever shifted the bulk of prestige film viewing to the home, analysts say. But theaters found a modicum of success in 2023 with offerings like “ Past Lives ,” a wistful drama with some Korean dialogue, and Hayao Miyazaki’s animated “The Boy and the Heron.” The bespoke “Asteroid City” managed $54 million.

Early box office results have also been promising for Oscar-oriented films like “ Poor Things ,” a surreal science-fiction romance, and “ American Fiction ,” a satire about a writer who puts together a fake memoir that turns on racial stereotypes.

Bigger is not better.

For the past decade, Hollywood has kept audiences interested in sequels by making each installment more bloated and often nonsensical than the last. Bigger! Faster! More!

That strategy may need rethinking — it’s just too expensive, analysts say, especially with Chinese moviegoers souring on American blockbusters. “Fast X,” the 10th movie in the “Fast and Furious” series, cost an estimated $340 million and took in $705 million worldwide, including $140 million in China. By comparison, “Furious 7” in 2015 cost $190 million and collected $1.5 billion, including $391 million in China.

Tom Cruise’s seventh “Mission: Impossible” spectacle, released in July in the wake of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” cost roughly $290 million to make and collected $568 million, including $49 million in China. The sixth “Mission: Impossible” in 2018 cost $178 million and generated $792 million, with Chinese ticket buyers chipping in $181 million.

Increasingly, franchise sequels and spinoffs need to feel fresh to succeed. Lionsgate, for instance, delved deeper into the High Table underground crime organization in “John Wick: Chapter 4” and introduced “Hunger Games” fans to a new story line (and cast) in the prequel “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.” Both movies were hits. Lionsgate even revived its “Saw” horror franchise by shifting the narrative back in time.

“Each of those movies did something different than the prior,” said Adam Fogelson, vice chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “It wasn’t just ‘spend more, make it bigger, make it louder and cram in more action.’”

Some audience patterns remain intact.

Horror continued to be a reliable performer, with “ Five Nights at Freddy’s ” and “ M3gan ” starting new franchises for Universal and its Blumhouse affiliate. Together, the two films cost $32 million. They collected a combined $469 million. Also notable was “The Nun II,” which cost Warner Bros. about $38 million and took in $268 million.

Superheroes may be down, but they’re not out. Marvel’s rollicking, well-established “Guardians of the Galaxy” series returned for a third chapter and generated $846 million against a $250 million budget. Sony’s bold, anime-influenced “ Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ” cost an estimated $150 million and collected $691 million.

Stars matter.

The conventional wisdom in Hollywood has been that movie stars are essentially part of the past. A celebrity name above the title no longer carries that much weight with ticket buyers. The underlying “intellectual property” is what fills seats.

People pay to see Barbie, not Margot Robbie.

Except that Mattel and various studios tried for at least 20 years to turn the toy into a live-action movie star. It took Ms. Robbie in the role (and Ryan Gosling as Ken) to finally make it happen. Other movies that benefited from star power in 2023 included “Wonka,” with Timothée Chalamet, and “Creed III,” anchored by Michael B. Jordan.

Stars don’t have heft? Try telling that to the producers of “Gran Turismo,” “Haunted Mansion,” “ Dumb Money ” and “ Strays ,” all of which disappointed at the box office and arrived when their casts were barred from promoting their work because of the SAG-AFTRA strike.

An earlier version of this article misstated figures for the movie “The Nun II.” It cost about $38 million, not $22 million, and took in $268 million, not $366 million.

Haunted Mansion Prepares To Close Its Doors, Fans Mourn Loss

in Disneyland Resort

A sign that reads "Haunted Mansion" in front of the white mansion holding the attraction of the same name at Disneyland Park.

The Haunted Mansion is one of the most iconic attractions across the Disney parks. Although it’s name and theming changes depending on the park, the overall idea and base attraction is the same. It’s seen the creation of two live-action films (both of which weren’t too well received) and some of the most popular theme park merchandise, but one version of the attraction is highly controversial.

The original concept for the Haunted Mansion ride reportedly goes back to Walt Disney’s original Imagineers, although it wouldn’t come to fruition until 1969 when it opened at Disneyland. Now, the ride can also be found at Walt Disney World, Tokyo Disneyland, and Disneyland Paris, and is the only attraction to be located in four different lands across four different Disney parks. However, the original Disneyland location is perhaps the most iconic and well-loved, despite its controversial holiday overlay.

The Nightmare Before Christmas  is a 1993 claymation film often attributed to Tim Burton (who created the story concept but didn’t direct) and directed by Henry Selick. Over the years, it’s become one of the most popular Halloween and Christmas films of all time , and has found a massive audience amongst Disney fans. Jack Skellington, Sally, and Oogie Boogie have become some of the most popular animated characters, with Disney California Adventure naming their Halloween party “Oogie Boogie Bash.”

Jack Skellington and Sally in 'The Nightmare Before Christmas'

During the Halloween season, guests can meet and greet with Jack and Sally, and the wait times for their interactions often reach several hours. With the amount of popularity the film and its characters have, one of the biggest questions floating in the fanbase is why the film doesn’t have its own permanent attraction at one of the Disney parks? Instead, the film gets about five months in the spotlight as it takes over Disneyland’s (and Tokyo Disneyland) Haunted Mansion each year.

The holiday overlay of the Haunted Mansion first started in October of 2001. This wouldn’t be the first time an attraction experienced a holiday overlay, as the Country Bear Jamboree and “it’s a small world” were both offering holiday versions for several years before Haunted Mansion did. With the  Nightmare Before Christmas  theme, the entire attraction is overtaken by the beloved characters and elements from the film, including Oogie Boogie, Santa Claus, and Zero. The temporary pieces make use of the dim lighting and black light throughout the normal Haunted Mansion and utilize it to recreate dynamic scenes from the animated holiday film.

While popular, the holiday overlay unfortunately takes away from the normal version of the ride for almost half of the year. Haunted Mansion closes for about two to three weeks in August prior to the start of the Halloween season in the parks and features the holiday overlay until January, after the Christmas season. Then it takes another several weeks to be reverted and refurbished if necessary, opening back up sometime in late February or March. In total, guests really only have about five full months of the regular Haunted Mansion, with the attraction being down for about a month and a half in total for the overlay. This year alone the attraction was shut down in August for the holiday overlay, and will continue with the  Nightmare Before Christmas  themed decor until January 21.

Earlier last year, it was announced that the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland would be undergoing a heavy refurbishment as well as receiving “reimagined” grounds and an extended outdoor queue. Along with that news was the news that it would mean the attraction would undergo an extended period of closure. The Haunted Mansion will close on January 21 and currently does not have a reopening date, with many speculating it will reopen just in time for the Halloween season.

In light of this, one fan took to Reddit to share their upset about the amount of time Haunted Mansion spends in its holiday overlay. u/Historical_Gap3933 posted

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I feel that haunted mansion holiday is up for too long. I grew up (and still do) LOVING haunted mansion. It has always been my favorite ride. But with holiday being up for Halloween and Christmas, it’s basically only open for 6 months out of the year. I just wish it was around for longer. And I know the reason that they have it up for the duration of both holidays. But the the theming of the experience feels very Christmas-y (too Christmas-y for Halloween anyway). But I also know that many people very much enjoy having it up for such a long duration. So maybe it is just a me thing lol.
I miss Haunted Mansion by u/Historical_Gap3933 in Disneyland

Despite their disclaimer that it “may be an unpopular opinion,” the comments are full of people sharing a similar opinion, with one even saying, “this may be the most popular opinion on this sub.” “I like the holiday overlay, but it feels like they should just make Nightmare its own ride and leave the Haunted Mansion alone,” another user said, echoing several other comments under the post. “I’ll be honest, Haunted Mansion Holiday was fun the first time we rode it. After that, I just wanted regular Haunted Mansion back. I wish there was a way they could do it like they do for Mission Breakout: Monsters After Dark, where it’s half and half. I know the imagineers work super hard on the Mansion for the holiday, and they do an amazing job! But I love my Mansion the way it is,” said u/erinngoblaagh27 . However, others pointed out that while it may be a popular opinion online, the in-person lines and wait times for the holiday version of the attraction say otherwise.

“Well… wait times certainly don’t agree with you. HHM is certainly more popular than HM,” said one user. “There are many reasons that HMH goes up when it does & how long it stays up,” u/GrimTiki explained. “Partly because (despite the overall tone here) it is popular – popular enough after 2 decades of being up that the queue for the entire attraction had to be redone to accommodate that popularity – & there’s only so many crew that can & are certified for the work to install it and SWH & everything else around the parks – so unless there’s a massive audience falloff, HMH will be there before Halloween & after the new year for a long time.”

Unfortunately for fans of the Haunted Mansion, the attraction is expected to be down for most of 2024 for the refurbishment and expansion planned, and will likely reopen just in time for the Halloween season, meaning that guests probably won’t get to experience the normal version of Haunted Mansion at all this year. With the amount of time the attraction already spends down or overlaid, and with it being such a popular attraction on its own, it remains to be seen how fans will react throughout the year as the ride continues to be unavailable.

What do you think about the Haunted Mansion holiday overlay? Is it fitting or is it time for  Nightmare Before Christmas  to get its own attraction?

Universal Overtakes Disney as Highest-Grossing Studio at 2023 Box Office

Thanks to Mario, J. Robert Oppenheimer and M3GAN, Universal Pictures ranked as the highest-grossing studio at the 2023 box office.

The company’s slate — a range of 24 films that included “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” “Oppenheimer” and “M3GAN” — collected $4.907 billion in worldwide ticket sales. Universal’s victory is notable because it marks the first time since 2015 that Disney was not the global box office leader.

But for the first time in a long time, Disney didn’t have one of the top three movies — those spots belong to Warner Bros.’ “Barbie” ($1.4 billion) and Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($1.3 billion) and “Oppenheimer” ($950 million). It’s also the first time since 2014 (except for the pandemic-stricken 2020 and 2021) that none of Disney’s movies crossed the $1 billion benchmark.

Disney indeed remains a box office powerhouse, but the reality is that most of the studio’s 2023 tentpoles failed to live up to expectations. “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” ($845 million) was the only clear triumph. Otherwise, a string of underperforming sequels and remakes (“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” “The Marvels” and “Haunted Mansion,” to name a few) resulted in the studio ceding the box office crown to Universal.

It should be noted that many of Disney’s modest wins or even outright flops would be classified as smash successes for its rivals. The problem is that Disney movies are hugely expensive — typically carrying production budgets of $200 million to $250 million — so they have high bars to clear in terms of profitability. So while “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” ranked as the 10th-highest grossing movie of the year with $476 million, it still ended up losing money for the studio in its theatrical run.

While Universal and Disney were closely gunning for No. 1, they were punching far above the rest. Warner Bros. landed in a distant third place with $3.84 billion globally — led by “Barbie,” “The Nun II” and “Wonka.”

With “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” the Denzel Washington threequel “Equalizer 3” and Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” among its 2023 lineup, Sony trailed at No. 4 with $2.094 billion worldwide.

Paramount, whose major titles were “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” and “PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie,” rounded out the top five with $2.026 billion globally.

‘Haunted Mansion’ Cast and Character Guide

Welcome, foolish mortals. It has been 20 years since 2003’s The Haunted Mansion film, and the beloved story based on the Disneyland theme park attraction is getting a reboot with a completely new plot. With a bright new writing and directing team, Haunted Mansion (2023) is preparing to give Disney fans a new twist on the old tale while raising some of its oldest lore from the dead. If you can’t wait to see who will embody your favorite Disney ghosts, specters, and caretakers, then let us be your ghost host as we take you on a little tour of Haunted Mansion ’s cast and characters. The happy haunts are beginning to materialize…

The film’s official description is as follows:

“A single mom named Gabbie hires a tour guide, a psychic, a priest, and a historian to help exorcise their newly bought mansion; after discovering it is inhabited by ghosts.”

Rosario Dawson as Gabbie

Rosario Dawson as Gabbie on a cropped Character Poster for Haunted Mansion

The lead character of Gabbie is taken on by prolific actress Rosario Dawson . Dawson began her acting career at the age of 14 when she appeared in a 1993 episode of Sesame Street . In the thirty years that followed, the talented actress has taken on more than 128 roles, most notably that of Mimi Marquez in the musical drama Rent . View Askewniverse fans will know Dawson as Becky, the love of Dante’s life in the Clerks films, and Star Wars fans will recognize her as the live-action Ahsoka Tano, the powerful rebel Togruta Jedi who appeared in The Mandalorian , and is getting her own spin-off series. Her character Gabbie is a single mom who already has plenty to deal with when she moves with her son Travis to their new mansion home, only to find that it is terribly haunted.

Jamie Lee Curtis as Madame Leota

haunted-mansion-jamie-lee-curtis-social-feature

Jamie Lee Curtis takes on the role of Madame Leota. Curtis is a renowned actress who is widely recognized for her decades-spanning role as the iconic final girl Laurie Strode in the Halloween film franchise. In 2022, Curtis played the role of Laurie one last time in Halloween Ends . Outside of horror, Curtis recently appeared in the groundbreaking, mind-bending film Everything Everywhere All at Once , for which she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

Madame Leota has seen a number of incarnations and is an original character in the Disneyland attraction. According to Disneyland attraction lore, Madame Leota Vardo was a clairvoyant palm reader and potion brewer originally from Salem, Massachusetts. She is said to be inadvertently responsible for the Salem Witch Trials and subsequently fled the state. It is believed Madame Leota died sometime in the 1600s, which is when she began to haunt the Séance Room of the mansion, appearing as a disembodied head within a glass orb, reciting incantations through a puff of blue smoke.

Owen Wilson as Father Kent

haunted-mansion-social-featured-1-1

One of the people enlisted to assist Gabbie with ridding her home of spirits is Father Kent, an unusually informal priest entrusted with exorcizing the ghosts from the mansion. Kent is portrayed by Owen Wilson , who brings his laid-back comedic style to the character. Fans will no doubt be wondering if the actor’s trademark “wow” makes it into the film (it probably does). Along with that characteristic quote, Wilson is known for his roles in such hilarious films as Wedding Crashers and Zoolander , as well as being a recurring cast member in many Wes Anderson films, including The Royal Tenenbaums and Bottle Rocket .

Danny DeVito as Bruce, College History Professor

haunted-mansion-social-featured-2-1

Danny DeVito takes on the role of smug history professor Bruce, who has also joined the ranks of those assisting with the ghoulish infestation of the estate. DeVito began his acting career in the 70s appearing in such projects as One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Taxi , and had a memorable performance as The Penguin in 1992’s Batman Returns . In 2006 though, DeVito moved from the role of producer to actor on the long-running series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia , creating the well-loved, yet highly immoral character Frank Reynolds.

Tiffany Haddish as Harriet

haunted-mansion-social-featured-5-1

Harriet is an unfortunate and possibly jinxed psychic hired to help communicate with the spirits residing within the walls of the mansion. The character is portrayed by actress and stand-up comedian Tiffany Haddish , who is perhaps most associated with her role as Dina in the 2017 film Girls Trip . Since her role in the outlandish comedy, Haddish has had a prolific career, branching out into voice acting and taking on roles in non-comedic projects such as the 2022 short Run . Since 2022, Haddish has also been starring in the Apple TV+ mystery anthology The Afterparty .

LaKeith Stanfield as Ben Matthias

LaKeith Stanfield as Ben on a cropped Character Poster for Haunted Mansion

Ben Matthias was an engineer who worked on a camera said to capture images of paranormal activity. Unfortunately, Ben’s beloved wife died, and with her gone, the engineer’s life fell apart. Ben now works as a ghost tour guide in New Orleans, though he doesn’t believe in ghosts anymore. Perhaps his time in the mansion will restore his faith in the paranormal. Sorry to Bother You actor LaKeith Stanfield portrays the heartbroken tour guide. Stanfield is best known for his lead role as Cassius Green in the surreal telemarketing drama, as well as Lieutenant Elliott in Knives Out and Darius in Donald Glover ’s Atlanta .

Jared Leto as The Hatbox Ghost / Alastair Crump

Jared Leto as The Hatbox Ghost in 'Haunted Mansion' 2023

Another alumnus of the original ride given new life in the film is The Hatbox Ghost, a ghoul removed from the original attraction within weeks of its opening due to issues with its lighting. In 2015, the hatter returned and the original trick of his head disappearing off his shoulders and reappearing in his hatbox was finally operable. In Disney lore, it is said that the Hatbox Ghost was linked to ax-killer Constance Hatchaway, who decapitated wealthy men after marrying them in order to inherit their assets. Fans of the story hope to learn more about the hatter’s origin, and the truth of his demise in Haunted Mansion .

Jared Leto has played some rather unbalanced characters in his acting career, so his taking on the role of this terrifying trickster seems perfectly cast. Some of Leto’s most well-known early roles include Jordan Catalano in the 90s teen drama My So-Called Life and Harry Goldfarb in Requiem for a Dream . In more recent years he has taken on roles in darker and more surreal films, such as Niander Wallace in Blade Runner 2049 and Dr. Michael Morbius in the 2022 film Morbius . Along with working with Disney for Haunted Mansion , Leto is currently set to star in the third film of the Tron film franchise, Tron: Ares .

Chase Dillon as Travis

Chase Dillon as Travis on a cropped Character Poster for Haunted Mansion

Gabbie’s son Travis is portrayed by Chase Dillon , a young actor who began his career with a recurring role in the comedy series First Wives Club . In the years since, the actor has taken on dramatic and voice acting roles, often portraying younger versions of characters, including Nat in The Harder They Fall and Desmond in the 2023 Hulu series Saint X .

Other notable cast members appearing in Haunted Mansion include Winona Ryder ( Stranger Things ) and Dany Levy ( Schitt’s Creek ), who have been cast as unknown ghosts. A number of ghost characters have been revealed, and are based on the spirits that haunt the original Haunted Mansion ride, including Chad Crumley ( Black Panther ) as one of the Duelists, a pair of affluent men who entered a gentlemen’s duel in the 1800s. This duel would result in both of them dying and with unfinished business, the pair continue their battle as they haunt the halls of the mansion. Rick Andosca ( Shazam! Fury of the Gods ) embodies the Caretaker Ghost. In the caretaker’s origin story, he is not dead and is in fact afraid of the ghosts that haunt the estate he cares for. It appears as though the frightful caretaker has joined their wretched ranks, although the state of his faithful dog Bones has not yet been disclosed. Bryan McClure ( The Walking Dead ) will take on the role of The Beheaded Knight, a medieval knight who was executed by… beheading. It is said that following the death of his executioner, the two ghosts became friends and haunted the mansion together. The ghost of the executioner who took his life will be portrayed by Tracy Goode ( Footloose 2011). Hasan Minhaj ( Patriot Act ) also has a cameo as a police sketch artist.

Haunted Mansion arrives in theaters on July 28, 2023. Here’s Tiffany Haddish and Jamie Lee Curtis talking about the movie in an interview with Crumpe’s Perri Nemiroff .
