The cars featured in the James Bond film 'Spectre'

SPECTRE, the next James Bond film will feature a selection of Jags, Ranges and Land Rovers.

Not just yet? Well, that's fine -- we'll talk about the cars, then.

The latest Bond outing and the fourth film with Daniel Craig playing a more rebellious and parkour-proficient MI6 agent sought to feature a car chase or two (per series custom) just to check that off the list of things a Bond movie must have, like a dining car scene on a luxury train and a villain with some kind of thing on his face. And the cars selected for the film, as you've surely seen in the trailers that were broadcast at saturation levels on your Color Television set and the YouTubes, were picked out as if to lend the film a less plausible setting than it would otherwise have. We're not spoiling anything here; the cars were meant to play a prominent role in the script.

Here are the star cars from the latest Bond ammo expenditure:

The DB10 was built on a Vantage platform and is said to be powered by a 4.7-liter V8.

The DB10 was built on a Vantage platform and is said to be powered by a 4.7-liter V8.

Aston Martin DB10

What is it? One of 10 prototypes made by Aston Martin specifically for the film. Aston Martin calls it "Our finest undercover car," perhaps grossly missing the point of undercover cars, and has built it to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the firm's involvement with the films even though there were a few gaps here and there.

"For over 50 years, Aston Martin has been the sports car of choice for James Bond," Aston Martin said in a statement shortly before the film's debut. "Produced exclusively for Spectre, DB10 was designed, engineered and hand crafted by a dedicated team at Aston Martin’s Gaydon Headquarters in the UK."

We seem recall Bond driving a few BMWs on occasion ... but that's not important. What is important is that the car was built on a VH platform shared with the Vantage , and that it is powered by a 4.7-liter V8 engine. A six-speed manual gearbox is reportedly what was used in the on-screen prototypes, though in a promotional clip the car's interior was shown with what appeared to be an automatic shifter. That's fine with us, as movie cars built in several copies are each used for different things.

Why is it in the film? Bond, as an MI6 agent, has to support the local industry and must drive a British-made car like an Aston Martin to stay undercover.

Can I buy one? Haha! No.

Does it make a memorable and realistic Bond film car? It will have to, despite the somewhat gratuitious chase sequence that threatened to steer the series back into Pierce Brosnan-era comedy, and the somewhat obvious aspect of product placement. The DB10 has several things going for it: it cannot cloak like a Klingon Bird of Prey, it seems vaguely tangible and realistic, and it doesn't do too many things that regular cars cannot do. In short, it doesn't dip into science fiction territory as portrayed in the film, not even to the degree that "The Transporter" franchise has blundered into making the audiences laugh at the film instead of with it.

The C-X75 was a technology demonstrator built for the company's 75th anniversary back in 2010.

Jaguar C-X75

What is it? The Jag C-X75 is the villain car in the film, even though Christoph Waltz's character does not get to drive it (or does he?). A prototype range-extended electric car constructed in 2010 to celebrate the marque's 75th birthday, the C-X75 features an electric powertrain with four separate motors churning out an eye-watering 780 hp and 1,180 lb-ft of torque. Small gas turbines mounted amidships generate an additional 188 hp to charge the batteries, though the range of this supercar is only 68 miles on a full charge. With a 0-60 sprint time of 3.4 seconds, in a straight line the C-X75 should be able to smoke the Aston with all of that electric torque, but that would be too easy.

The C-X75 is a technological masterpiece meant to showcase tech that Jaguar Land Rover had no intention of actually fielding, so the exotic powertrain was predictably nutty. But with Dodge sedans making just a few less horses, five years down the road the prototype doesn't seem all that nutty.

Why is it in the film? To balance out the presence of an Aston Martin prototype supercar. We have to agree with the studio's choice here -- an Aston Martin DB10 taking part in a chase with something like a Ford Mondeo would have looked silly. So the filmmakers chose to double down on the silly and have the car battle another prototype. What are the odds of them being in the same city, driven by people with opposing world views? To be fair, supercar chases like this take place in the south of France all the time, but it's usually only the results that we see on wreckedexotics.com.

Can I buy one? Nope. Though the studio hasn't said what it has done with all the prototypes built for the film.

Does it make a memorable and realistic Bond film car? We're not spoiling anything here by disclosing that it is driven by one of the villains in the film -- that much was made clear in the trailer. But due to the chase sequence (also featured prominently in the trailers) being somewhat anemic and predictable, the car spends most of its time carefully navigating city streets. Those expecting it to play the role of the Audi S8 in the 1998 documentary "Ronin" will come away disappointed.

Its role in the film is more realistic than some other vehicles stretching back to the Bond films of the late 1980s, where a brief interlude from the "comedy" era commenced, but the car is mostly there to prevent the DB10 from getting all the attention.

The Rangie Sport SVR is the most easily purchasable of all the cars from "Spectre." Having said that, it's still expensive and those LED lights you have to order separately.

The Rangie Sport SVR is the most easily purchasable of all the cars from

Range Rover Sport SVR

What is it? It's yet another British vehicle taking part in a film populated by British cars, and it is driven by the (impeccably dressed) villains. The Sport SVR , of course, is the hotter version of the sporty Rangie, with a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 from the Jaguar R lineup underhood, producing 550 hp and 520 lb-ft of torque. And since it is driven by bad guys, it has been modified a bit to accentuate that point, with clear LED strobes under the grile and an LED illumination bar on the roof. Bad guys need excellent visibility at night since they are nocturnal.

Why is it in the film? It's in the film because it looks mean and it looks like something a villain straight out of central casting would use. The Rangie Sport took part in scenes films in the Austrian Alps, probably not far from where "Inception" had that mountain lodge sequence that didn't serve any purpose. Also, Jaguar Land Rover had a contract to supply vehicles for the film, though the production suffered a setback when a number of Land Rovers were stolen by actual villains. Land Rover has not mentioned if they have been recovered.

Can I buy one? Yes you can.

Does it make a memorable and realistic Bond film car? It would have were it not for the presence of the Land Rover Defenders in the film. But overall, even without the mods, it looks like something that scowling villains in black suits over black turtlenecks would pile into, as in "The Transporter" films.

The four-door pickup model was never officially sold in the U.S.

The four-door pickup model was never officially sold in the U.S.

Land Rover Defender "Big Foot" by SVO

What is it? It's the official vehicle of the impeccably prepared and accessorized villains, built by Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations specifically for the film. This Defender wears 37-inch tires, features extra body protection in the form of a skid plates and extra diamond-plating on various surfaces, and comes equipped with a roof rack with off-road lights, a snorkel and a Warn winch.

Why is it in the film? The villains in "Spectre," incidentally belonging to an organization with the same name, are very brand-loyal and color coordinated, hence their preference for black Land Rover products.

Can I buy one? Sort of. You can buy the Defenders that were officially sold by Land Rover in the 1990s, or import ones manufactured through the 1990 model year under the NHTSA's 25 year rule.

Does it make a memorable and realistic Bond film car? Given the relatively short period of time where the Defenders are on screen, they might have well been something else. The sequences involving the brace of Range Rover Sport SVRs and Land Rover Defenders are fairly realistic in terms of the physics involved, but their presence is not crucial to the plot. So they could have been any number of other SUVs. A more memorable appearance by a Land Rover Defender (in a supporting role) was the four-door Defender pickup in "Skyfall," which had a much greater number of all kinds of cars.

One of four Jaguar C-X75 supercars built for 2015 Bond film Spectre has been made road legal - and now it's for sale

Posted: 12 January 2024 | Last updated: 13 January 2024

A road-legal Bond villain's Jaguar supercar that was never made available to the public is to go on sale with a price tag of around £2.5million, This is Money can exclusively reveal.

The orange Jaguar C-X75 – with a chassis number ending with the iconic '007' – is one of a handful of specially-made cars commissioned to play a pivotal role in 007 movie Spectre during a dramatic duel through the centre of Rome with James Bond, as played by Daniel Craig in an exclusive Aston Martin.

The revamped Jaguar is being sold for a client by UK-based specialist luxury and supercar dealers Kaaimans International after secretly undergoing detailed engineering and trim work to transform it from a big screen film stunt car into the road-legal supercar it was originally destined to be.

It is one of just four surviving stunt cars made for the 2015 Bond movie - a fifth was destroyed during filming.

The stunning two-seater C-X75 was originally created and unveiled with a flourish in 2010 as a 200mph prototype plug-in hybrid electric Jaguar supercar - but the project was later axed by the British car-maker on economic grounds.

However, the car itself did live again to be seen on the big screen with a handful built to order for the 2015 hit film.

Seven C-X75s were used during filming in total, though two were genuine prototype C-X75 hybrids (both used only for slow-moving and interior shots) that are today deemed 'priceless' and have been retained by manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover for its own collection.

The remaining five cars were crafted exclusively for the movie by the technical and engineering department of the Williams F1 team in a matter of months before filming started - the fifth taking just 12 hours to make, one Williams Advanced Engineering bod revealed to MailOnline and This is Money motoring editor Rob Hull in 2015.

Each of the movie-exclusive C-X75s featured a V8 engine taken from the Range Rover Sport SVR and had a unique space-frame chassis (much cheaper than the genuine C-X75 carbon fibre tub) and upgraded suspension to perform jumps during filming.

They were also fitted with manual handbrakes, gearboxes and clutches to make jaw-dropping skids in front of the Colosseum in the movie easier to master.

One was even converted into a 'pod car', with a seat and all driving controls encased in a roll cage mounted on the roof so stunt drivers can manoeuver the vehicle during scenes with Spectre henchman, Mr Hinx, played by actor Dave Bautista, filmed sitting in the car.

Of the four surviving movie creations, two are in the hands of 'serious collectors' in Switzerland.

One of the four was offered to collectors at RM Sotheby's Abu Dhabi auction in November 2019. However, with an estimate of $800,000 to $1.2m, it failed to make its reserve and was not sold.

In the movie we see Craig as Bond, driving a limited-edition Aston Martin DB10 (and one of just 10 Astons specially created for the movie), being dramatically pursued at night through Rome and along the river bank of the Italian capital by the Jaguar driven by Spectre agent Mr Hinx, as played by Dave Bautista.

Will it fit in my garage: Jaguar C-X75 movie car

Price: £2m-£2.5m for chassis number ending: ‘007’

Built by: Jaguar in collaboration with Williams Advanced Engineering facility, Oxfordshire

On sale via: Kaaimans International , Tollerton, Nottinghamshire

Engine: Supercharged 5.0-litre V8 petrol

Power:  550 horsepower

Acceleration (0-62mph): circa 155mph

Length: 4,646mm  Height: 1,199mm

Width (front): 1,688mm Width (rear): 1,704mm

Weight: 1,450kg

Wheels: 20-inch (front), 21-inch (rear)

The Jaguar movie car '007' is one of two C-X75s currently owned by the collector client, who previously bought the '001' chassis model.

This he plans to keep for himself. But the '007' chassis model is up for sale.

Both are the subject of detailed work with specialists to make them properly driveable and road legal, says Gary Tolson, co-owner of supercar specialists Kaaimans International based in Tollerton, Nottinghamshire, which is handling the sale.

The prestige dealer had previously bought both cars privately – and sold them on to the current owner.

Conversion work to the stunt cars to comply with road legal status includes: new fuel tanks; a new emissions-compliant exhaust system; a new speedometer; a proper handbrake; replacement glass; new carbon fibre; upgrade of electrics, electronics and parts where necessary; electric mirrors; and new interior trim and seats.

It rides on 20-inch wheels at the front and 21 inch at the rear.

After the work it will be IVA certified as road legal (Individual Vehicle Approval from the government's Vehicle Certification Agency or VCA) and, once suitably taxed, insured and MOT'd will be able to be driven legally on UK roads.

When the original Jaguar C-X75 prototype was launched more than a decade ago, and before its movie fame, it was hailed as 'the E-Type for the 21st century' and 'the sexiest Jaguar ever'.

Mr Tolson said: 'It's a very rare car with an impeccable Bond pedigree. It'll cost around £1m to convert it so the price we're looking for it to fetch will be around £2m to £2.5m. We expect the work to be completed soon ready for sale in early Spring.'

He said: 'It's one of only four stunt Jaguar C-X75s used in the movie Spectre. Our client also owns another – with the chassis number 001 – which he plans to keep. But chassis '007', with that iconic James Bond number, is up for sale.'

Mr Tolson added: 'The other two stunt Jaguars are with serious collectors in Switzerland who both also own an Aston Martin DB10 as a matching pair from the movie, so they are unlikely ever to sell.

'Jaguar Land Rover retains two other C-X75s which are the original pre-production prototypes.'

Why Jaguar ditched C-X75 hypercar production a decade ago?

Read more: being a bond villain (for an hour): rob hull takes a spin in one of two 'priceless' jaguar c-x75 prototypes.

There have been plenty of memorable Bond villains in the last half century and - for an hour only - our motoring editor had the chance to take on the role of the next 007 baddie.

Because, for a short period only in 2015, MailOnline and This is Money motoring editor Rob Hull had the opportunity to drive one of two genuine Jaguar C-X75 prototypes, which was used by Spectre henchman Mr Hinx in the Bond movie.

> Here's what it's like to drive a 'priceless' prototype that became a big-screen star

The stunning Jaguar C-X75 supercar has had a sadly chequered history.

Designed by Jaguar's former legendary design boss Ian Callum, the Jaguar C-X75 supercar had originally been created as a prototype cutting-edge plug-in hybrid vehicle with four electric motors and a unique 'turbine' propulsion system.

It was a star of the 2010 Paris Motor Show and was hailed as 'the E-Type for the 21st century' and 'the sexiest Jaguar ever'.

Technical difficulties meant the planned propulsion system was later changed to a petrol-electric plug-in hybrid power 1.6-litre four cylinder engine linked to two powerful electric motors, and able to accelerate from 0 to 60mph in under three seconds with low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Just 250 C-X75s were due to be built between 2013 and 2015 as part of a collaboration with Williams, combining race engineering with cutting-edge environmental technology.

However, the model, which had been due to go into full production with a near £1million price-tag, never made it to showrooms.

Jaguar deemed it unsuitable to launch a seven-figure, limited-run supercar in 2012 because of the recession, choosing to pull the plug on the project to focus on its bread-and-butter mainstream vehicle development.

However, in September 2015 a modified stunt version of the C-X75 was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show ahead of its starring role in the Bond movie Spectre.

Jaguar's C-X75 from James Bond's "Spectre."

Back in 2010, Jaguar stunned Paris—and the world—when it unveiled the C-X75 concept at the city’s motor show. Nearly a decade ago, Jaguar was looking towards the future, as the C-X75 was to be a plug-in hybrid, with an electric motor parked at each wheel for a combined 778-horsepower. Those batteries would get their juice from a duo of diesel turbines in lieu of a combustion engine.

The concept was very well received, with automotive journalists and publications bestowing it with awards and praise, so Jaguar continued to kick the box down the road. It wasn’t long before the diesel components were dumped in favor of a petrol-powered, twin-charged (that’s right: supercharged and turbocharged!) 5.0-liter V-8 engine that would pump electrons into two electric motors, instead of four. Pleased with the outcome, engineers and executives then started pricing out the C-X75. Estimates had a monroney somewhere in the neighborhood of $1.2 million, far too expensive for the year—2011—and the downtrodden global economy. Even with a limited run of 250 cars planned, Jaguar ultimately decided it would be a waste to produce, and scrapped the project entirely.

Jaguar's C-X75 from James Bond's "Spectre."

But five development prototypes endured. A few allegedly went to auction, Jaguar squirreled one away for itself, and the last was museum-bound. The C-X75 was all but forgotten until James Bond Spectre producers approached Jag and asked if they’d be able to create a few more for the film. The company agreed and set to work building new models. Seven were finished, four of which were stunt cars. One of those models, number 001, is now for sale through Kaaiman’s International in London.

This car, like its brethren models, was more an homage to the original concept’s vision than the actual vision itself. There’s little to the interior, and the frame is likely a space frame with exterior panels made to resemble the concept. Squint and it looks a touch like the lovechild of an F-Type and a McLaren 720S, which isn’t the worst combination.

It’s unclear what the horsepower on the Spectre C-X75 is, though if you’re serious, give Kaaiman’s a shout to inquire. Also undisclosed is the price, though we’re imagining it’s quite high.

The new James Bond movie “Spectre” opened Friday. It stars Daniel Craig and an Aston Martin DB10.

The custom-made sports car was ordered up by the makers of the $250 million film. It is the first ever bespoke Bond car — 100% built to order, for 007 alone.

The filmmakers went to Aston Martin in September of last year, and told the company they wanted something brand new but very Bond — a modern version, they said, of the 1963 DB5 their hero drove in “Goldfinger,” “Thunderball,” “GoldenEye,” “Tomorrow Never Dies,” “Casino Royale” and “Skyfall.”

(Trivia experts will know Bond also drove an Aston Martin DBS in “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service,” a Vantage V8 Volante in “The Living Daylights,” a V12 Vanquish in “Die Another Day” and a DBS V12 in “Casino Royale” and “Quantum of Solace.”)

Aston Martin delivered the vehicles six months later, and filming began.

The resulting coupe is powered by a 4.7-liter V8 engine that makes 420 horsepower and is capable of a top speed of 190 mph and zero-to-60 mph acceleration of 4.7 seconds.

A bit of a throwback, it features a stick shift — by order of the filmmakers. “They were adamant that Bond drive a manual,” said the company’s Matthew Clarke.

We got a chance to drive the bespoke Bond car, a week before the movie opened, but just a little: Its many special features prevent it from being street legal. So the quick spin we took around the parking lot didn’t reveal much, except that it sounds and feels like something you’d want to experience on the race track.

LOS ANGELES, CA-OCTOBER 26, 2015: The Aston Martin DB9 GT Volante (rear) and the specially created DB10 for the new James Bond movie, "Spectre." Ten were made for the movie -- Aston Martin will keep one, the producers of the movie will get one and a third will be auctioned off. The others are in parts and Bentley will keep them. (Myung J. Chun / Los Angeles Times)

Unlike Bond rides of old, which featured lasers, machine guns, heat-seeking shotguns, spinning license plates and other gadgets, this one is fairly straightforward.

The “Eject” button on top of the shift knob is still there — but now it triggers a pair of tail-mounted flamethrowers. And instead of an ignition key or start button, it features a “thumbprint reader,” so no one but Bond can use it.

An aluminum chassis and carbon fiber body mean it’s very light, but also expensive to produce. That may be one reason Aston Martin says there will never be a DB10 for sale.

But some elements of the DB10 might begin appearing in late 2016, when it is expected that a new DB11 will arrive to replace the outgoing DB9.

The new Bond car features a low, shark-like face, which replaces the gate-mouthed front typical of the last several generations of Aston Martins. That was a key design point.

“The natural comparison is the original Bond car, the DB5,” said the company’s design director Marek Reichman. “It is a scalpel, not a knife. The DB10 wears a modern interpretation of that signature. The grill was actually inspired by sharks.”

That design could well appear on the DB11 — and could be the face of all new Aston Martins starting in 2017.

The DB10’s clamshell hood — a first for Aston Martin — and more muscular shoulders could also be part of the DB11 look.

Getting the car to the screen involved missteps. Pirelli custom-made tires for the vehicle, but the filmmakers found they were too good — and wouldn’t slide across a Roman piazza as called for in the script. The filmmakers went back to Pirelli and asked them to make a not-so-good variation on the same rubber, in order to get the shot.

As is usually the case with movie magic, the vehicle audiences will see on screen is actually many vehicles. Aston Martin made 10 DB10s. Three were so-called “hero” cars, and were complete cars used in driving sequences. Seven others were partial vehicles, each built differently to do different stunts — some without complete bodies, others scheduled for destruction on screen.

Aston Martin will keep one of the hero cars for itself. One will go to the producers. A third will be auctioned off for charity. The bits and pieces of the other seven will remain with Aston Martin.

“Skyfall,” the preceding film in the long-running series, made more than $1 billion in ticket sales worldwide.

“Spectre,” which has already broken opening day records in Britain, is expected to do equally well.

Story

Spectre, James Bond's 24th adventure, is all set for release in India on November 20, 2015 and the cars used in the film have got as much attention as the super spy himself. Spectre has Ian Fleming’s lead character driving an Aston Martin DB10 while the villainous henchman ‘Mr Hinx’ uses the awesome Jaguar C-X75. Add the Rolls Royce Wraith , a buffed up Land Rover Defender Bigfoot, a Range Rover Sport SVR, and a few others into the mix and you get an automotive feast.

With Bond films always having their fair share of fancy cars, we pick out the top 5 over the years: 1962 Sunbeam Alpine

The Sunbeam Alpine in Dr No is a favourite with James Bond aficionados. And it’s definitely not because of its 80bhp 1.6-litre engine. While manufacturers provided free cars in exchange for screen time in later films, Dr No’s producers had to borrow the Alpine from a Jamaican resident. There were very few sports cars on the island and the producers had to make do with the Sunbeam Alpine. The first Bond film had a budget of less than 1 million pounds, so there was no gadget-laden Q Branch special for Sean Connery.

1976 Lotus Esprit S1

As seen in 1977’s The Spy Who Loved Me, the Lotus Esprit served double duty as a road-going sports coupe and a submarine. Roger Moore’s 007 takes the Esprit for a swim to spy on the villain’s underwater facilities. If that wasn’t enough, the Lotus - powered by a 140 horsepower 2.0-litre engine - was also equipped with anti-aircraft missiles. In fact, the cinematic version of the sports car earned the nickname ‘Wet Nellie’ for its skills underwater.

1967 Toyota 2000GT

The Toyota 2000GT which featured in You Only Live Twice was produced in extremely low numbers - 351 to be exact - from 1967 to 1970, and is regarded as Japan’s first supercar. Dubbed the 'Japanese E-Type', the 2.0-litre Toyota 2000GT is considered one of the Japanese carmaker’s best sports cars. The first two 2000GTs to be used in the film were coupes, in white, one right-hand drive and other left-hand drive. But it became apparent that Sean Connery was too tall to comfortably fit in the car and filming of the interior shots proved tricky. As a result, Toyota created two open-top 2000GT roadsters, to ensure the film crew could capture all the shots they needed. These were the only open-top 2000GT ever officially produced.

2015 Jaguar C-X75

The Jaguar C-X75, driven by the aforementioned Mr Hinx in Spectre, can give any supercar a run for its money, with quite a few fans preferring it over Daniel Craig’s Aston Martin DB10. The C-X75 produces a massive 850hp power using a 1.6-litre turbo and supercharged four-cylinder engine paired with an electric drive system. With mean looks to boot, this car is just plain ‘scary’. Sadly though, Jaguar has said that the C-X75 won't see the light of production, but we sincerely hope they change their mind.

1963 Aston Martin DB5

Last, but definitely not the least. The Aston Martin DB5 is probably the most iconic movie car of all time. And why not? It’s got fantastic looks, oozes class, uses a powerful 282bhp 4.0-liter engine, and is also full of nifty gadgets. Seen in 6 James Bond films, from Goldfinger to Skyfall, the Aston Martin DB5 is a legend in its own right.

The successful Bond In Motion exhibition at the Film Museum in London added screen used SPECTRE vehicles and props to their impressive collection.

Bond In Motion, an exhibition of vehicles from the James Bond films, opened in March 2014 . Some of the vehicles have been moved around the museum a few times since then, but nothing as big as the current addition of five cars from SPECTRE , which are displayed among costumes and props from the same film.

The entrance of the museum itself has been redone, and now features several Day of the Dead festival props (all used on the set in Mexico City), including a large skeleton with hat, smaller skeletons and bunting.

The main attraction of the new SPECTRE exhibit room is the Aston Martin DB10 used for the filming of the Rome car chase. There are two versions on display of this stunning and rare car. One is a stunt vehicle which was partly stripped and set up to shoot the ejector seat scene. The other is a fully functional DB10 that was used for the actual driving scenes in Rome.

During the press opening of the exhibition on November 17th, special effects supervisor Chris Corbould talked to the press and posed in some of the vehicles. Corbould was just in the news last week for setting a Guinness World Record for the largest film stunt explosion ( read more ).

The biggest car in the exhibition is a Land Rover Defender Big Foot, another stunt vehicle, one that was used to flip over a few times.

Some of the doors of the massive veihicle are missing as a result of the stunts, and there's a 'cannon' fitted in the rear seat area that created enough force for the car to flip over.

And last but not least, Franz Oberhauser’s beautiful antique Rolls-Royce Wraith, used in the Sahara Desert scene where James Bond and Madeleine Swann get picked up.

Making a trip to the museum is also worth it just to see some of the costumes of SPECTRE . Meg Simmonds, archive director of EON Productions, selected a props and costumes to make this SPECTRE exhibition even more complete.

The Cars of SPECTRE is open to the public starting 18th November 2015. Bond in Motion is definitely worth a visit, because all the non- SPECTRE vehicles are still on display as well. It is the largest collection of original James Bond vehicles.

Jaguar C-X75 Stunt Car From Bond Film ‘Spectre’ Heads to Auction

Jaguar C-X75 was used in the James Bond film Spectre.

A Jaguar C-X75 stunt car built for the 2015 James Bond film Spectre will be offered at RM Sotheby’s inaugural auction in the Middle East on Nov. 30, with an estimate of between US$800,000 and US$1.2 million.

The car, with chassis no. 001, is one of a handful Jaguar C-X75 examples used as stunt cars in Spectre , starring Daniel Craig. While 007 is at the wheel of an Aston Martin DB10, Mr. Hinx, the assassin for the Spectre organization, chases him in a 2015 Jaguar C-X75.

The Jaguar C-X75 was intended to be a hybrid-electric, two-seat concept car produced by Jaguar in partnership with the Formula 1 team, Williams Advanced Engineering division, according to RM Sotheby’s. The model was first unveiled at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. In 2011, Jaguar announced that it planned to produce a limited 250 examples. However, the production was cancelled in 2012, and only five developmental prototypes were built to the intended production specifications.

Later, a group of stunt cars was built and used during the filming of Spectre , RM Sotheby’s said.

The car offered for sale was built specifically for the film. It features a space frame built to World Rally Championship specifications and powered by a specially modified dry-sump V8 engine.

Following filming, the car was returned to Williams and serviced and refitted with parts as needed. It was then utilized for Spectre promotions, and shipped to Mexico in late 2015 for an appearance at the Mexican Grand Prix, RM Sotheby’s said.

The auction will take place on the first floor of the Formula 1 Paddock Club in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, on the evening of Nov. 30, concurrent with the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. This marks RM Sotheby’s first auction in the Middle East.

Other highlights of the auction include a 1990 Ferrari F40, a 2006 Lamborghini Concept S, and a 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder. More details will be released later.

A Jaguar C-X75 stunt car built for the 2015 James Bond film Spectre will be offered at RM Sotheby’s inaugural auction in the Middle East on Nov.

This Rare Jaguar Supercar Driven By a Bond Villain in ‘Spectre’ Is Now For Sale

A Formula 1 team engineered the one-of-a-kind Jag to aggressively drift on the cobbled streets of Rome.

RM Sotheby’s is auctioning off one of four Jaguar C-X75 stunt cars featured in a jaw-dropping  Spectre chase scene.

cars in james bond spectre

James Bond superfans will recognize the gorgeous exotic as the vehicle piloted by Dave Bautista’s villainous assassin, Mr. Hinx, during his adrenaline-pumping pursuit of 007 and his Aston Martin DB10 through the cobbled streets of Rome.

cars in james bond spectre

Outside of the Bond universe, the C-X75 is incredibly rare. It first debuted in 2010 as a gas turbine-powered all-wheel drive hybrid before the powertrain was modified to run a four-cylinder. Only five examples were built before the program was cancelled in 2012.

cars in james bond spectre

But for the 24th Bond installment, producers commissioned Formula 1 team Williams Advanced Engineering to build four World Rally Championship-spec C-X75s. Numerous modifications were made, beginning with the addition of a steel tubular sub-frame and an extra-travel suspension designed handle steep embankments and drive on sidewalk pavement at speed.

cars in james bond spectre

Williams swapped out the hybrid platform for the Jag F-Type’s 492-horsepower V8 and a Ricardo short-travel six-speed transmission, according to Robb Report . The all-wheel drive architecture was also converted to rear-wheel drive, making it easier to initiate burnouts and drifts.

cars in james bond spectre

One of the four stunt cars was even made fireproof to film Mr. Hinx’s demise at the means of Bond’s rear-mounted flamethrower. However, this C-X75—chassis no. 24001—was the first of four and served as a “pod car.”

RM Sotheby’s has further details:

Chassis no. 24001 is the first of the four stunt cars built and served as a ‘pod car’. In order for the actors to focus on their reactions and facial close-ups, driving duties for such shots were relegated to a secondary pilot who sat in a pod mounted on the roof. Because it served in this capacity, this stunt C-X75 endured far less brutal driving than the other three stunt cars, though all of them survived the shoot, a tribute to Williams’s build quality.

After Spectre wrapped, Williams did a full rebuild of the V8 and refitted parts as needed. The interior is still equipped for stunt driving with Recaro sport seats, the hydraulic handbrake, a host of race-car-style dash buttons including a knob to adjust the AP Racing brakes, and a lack of any fine finishes or paneling.

The 2015 Jaguar C-X75 “Spectre” is expected to fetch between $800,000 and $1.2 million at RM Sotheby’s Abu Dhabi auction at the end of the month. Considering that the Goldeneye Aston DB5 bested its pre-auction $2 million estimate when it sold for $2.6 million last year , don’t be surprised if this baddie’s Jag does the same.

The International Spy Museum is proud to host this official exhibition of iconic vehicles, all used on-screen by 007 and his many allies and adversaries. Focus Of The Week: Spectre’s Rome Car Chase

The aston vs. jaguar pursuit.

Posted February 21, 2018 by AI

On February 19 2015, the Spectre unit began shooting the exciting car chase through the cobbled streets and alongside the river Tiber in Rome.

As Sam Mendes put it, “I loved the car chase being a one-on-one speed battle, a game of cat and mouse between two of the fastest cars in the world, neither of which had been seen before.”

The sequence depicts Bond (Daniel Craig)’s first run-in with Spectre ’s imposing hit man Hinx (Dave Bautista). Franz Oberhauser (Christoph Waltz) notices Bond has infiltrated Spectre ’s clandestine meeting and sends Hinx to apprehend him. 007 makes his escape and a high-speed duel ensues played out in two unique supercars — an Aston Martin D10 and a Jaguar C-X75 — against a backdrop of historic landmarks.

Director Sam Mendes conceived the sequence with three elements running parallel; Hinx in relentless pursuit of Bond, 007 calling Moneypenny to track down ‘The Pale King’ at Lake Altaussee and a lighter strand of Bond experimenting with the DB10’s gadgets. “Bond steals the car from Q’s workshop without really knowing what it does,” says Mendes. “That just adds another little twist.”

The Rome location raised the challenge of shooting a car chase in one of the busiest cities in the world. Associate Producer Gregg Wilson recalled “Via Nomentana was one of the longest city lock-offs our location department had ever done — it was about three kilometres of main roads entering Rome.” The cars swerve down the Scala de Pinedo steps and onto the towpath of the Tiber. Concrete wedges, disguised as cobbles were placed on the steps as protection and the walls were clad in steel, painted over to look like concrete, to avoid damage from the DB10’s flamethrower. Care was taken to preserve the city’s rich heritage.

With cars jumping and landing at speeds of 70mph the rigours of filming demanded eight Aston Martins and seven Jaguars be on hand. Without the easy option of a factory providing spare parts, three crews worked day and night to keep the cars on the road.

How ‘Ferrari’ Sourced $70 Million Vintage Cars to Create Authentic Racing Sequences

Patrick Dempsey portrays racer Piero Taruffi

“We thought we were not going to be able to find the car that won the Mille Miglia, the one driven by Piero Taruffi,” says Triphook. “But what happened is that whilst talking to one of the owners, he said, ‘What do you think about having the actual winning car of the film on the film? A friend of mine owns it, and I can just speak to him and we can have it.’”

Triphook has worked since 2015 to obtain and transport picture vehicles to far-flung locations on everything from “Spectre” to “Tenet.” On “Ferrari,” he was responsible for a total of 393: “that’s everything — cars, trains, motorcycles, trucks, anything, you name it,” he says. With cars like Taruffi’s Ferrari 315 S and the others featured in the race, Triphook says he was essentially convincing people to let them risk damaging what was in some cases a multi-million-dollar conveyance in order for Mann to achieve a few extra minutes of historical verisimilitude.

“The most complicated part of it was trying to convince the owners, to tell them, ‘Hey, we’re going to use the car at 200 kilometers an hour and it’s Italian roads, and it’s going to be driven by a stunt driver or an actor,’” Triphook recalls. Thankfully, the filmmaker’s pedigree greased a few of those wheels. “A lot of the people were actually fans of Michael, so [they] just said yes to my questions without even questioning what we were going to be doing.”

As costly as it might have been, Triphook says that the price tag was worth it when he saw the look on Mann’s face. “I turned up on set with 40 vehicles — I don’t know how many million dollars we had that day on that square,” he remembers. “But it was such a strong display of machines that Michael got out of his van and he didn’t know where to look. And he made us all stop all the crew, and he documented every single car in that square for half an hour with his camera team.”

For the vehicles they couldn’t borrow from ultra-wealthy collectors, “Ferrari” turned to Rita Campana, whose family company owns and operates the oldest body shop in Modena. Armed with Campana’s 76 years of experience, she led the process of developing believable replicas of the cars raced by Team Ferrari in the Mille Miglia. “We could build them like we could have done with an original car,” Campana says. “In three months and a half basically, we built three Ferrari 335 S. Two Ferrari 315 S. Two Ferrari 801 F1, and two Maserati 450 S.”

She says that the 801 was the most difficult one to build because it’s one of the vehicles that no longer exists. “We had to scan a small model, and then rescale it creating the right proportions,” Campana says. Though some of the cars more or less had to be built in the same way they were back in 1957, modern technology accelerated the construction of others. “I remember when my grandfather did some restorations on the real cars, he only had the drawing on a paper,” she remembers. “Having a 3D model from which we could create a wooden model, we could beat the metal on the wooden model to save time.”

In some cases, choosing which materials to make the replicas from was decided by what they would be used for in the film. “We had to create some of the cars in aluminum because they had to be crashed,” she reveals. “Michael wanted to see the real behavior of the material like in a real crash.” Their approach to the crashed cars was decidedly old-school. “We took a chassis and we stretched it. We hammered the metal in a hard way. We crashed the mirror.”

Meanwhile, there’s a joke in the film where Taruffi complains that his car lacks a crucial amenity: an ash tray for his cigarettes. Campana says they made some minor adjustments to accommodate each actor or driver’s specific needs, but none that would undercut Mann’s commitment to authenticity. “The biggest change when you have to think about one driver or another is the seat and the distance of the steering wheel,” Campana says.

That decision to compromise the beauty of some of the models in order to more viscerally capture the race suited cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt just fine. “We were not going out of our way to glamorize the car, ever,” Messerschmidt says. “We were trying to shy away from that concept and focus on the other side of it, the visceral, high energy, dramatic portion of the movie. The beauty would take care of itself.”

The Oscar-winning director of photography says that like Triphook and Campana did with the cars themselves, he researched how the races were filmed back when they actually happened. “The stabilized camera is almost an anachronistic concept,” he says. “When you look at the archival footage of this period, you feel the road noise, you see the shape, you see the energy of it. Michael wanted that to carry through.”

In particular, Campana’s work with the brackets made it possible for them to capture footage that wouldn’t have been possible with an original car. “What happens a lot, and particularly with vintage cars, is these are either mono-bodies or they’re a single body panel that is meticulously welded to portions of frame. They’re very difficult to mount cameras to, and you have to be quite delicate with them,” Messerschmidt says. “We didn’t have that issue because we could design them.

“We did a lot of testing with the stunt team, mounting cameras, looking at the weight distribution, and whether or not that would affect the performance of the car,” he continues. “The entire essence of it was really trying to make sure that the audience experiences it as real and as authentic as possible.”

Along with being an “amateur mechanic,” Messerschmidt says his work on films like JD Dillard’s “Devotion,” where he mounted cameras to airplanes traveling at 300 knots, helped him anticipate how to shoot “Ferrari.” “There is a diminishing return at a certain point, depending on your lensing, before the audience no longer feels speed,” he observes. “There’s to some degree a sweet spot between making sure that it accurately represents the conditions of how the car would behave, but also against safety, and also simply just not telling the difference between 80 and 100 miles an hour.”

In addition to designing the specific shots that Mann wanted, Messerschmidt was also armed with a handful of visual tricks to amplify the intensity of the races. “In profile, you go 50, 60 miles an hour, and it looks like you’re going 100 just because of the motion blur in the background,” he explains. “Also, the focal length you’re using has a lot to do with it. A wider lens that’s close to the ground, where we call it ground rush, can sell speed extremely well. The higher the camera and the longer the lens, the slower the car tends to look.”

Ultimately, Messerschmidt and Mann combined these boilerplate cinematic techniques with cutting-edge technology as a way to pay homage to, and also propel forward, automotive racing’s long history with visual storytelling. He says, “conversations Michael and I had were about the cinema grammar of how referential to be to the modern techniques of visual storytelling and assembly, and when to step back and let it be visceral and loud — and to some degree disorienting.” Even so, the “Ferrari” cinematographer welcomed the pressure to get that balance right.

“I’ve said it before, but amenable directors don’t make good movies,” Messerschmidt says. “Michael is pushing everybody all the time, and we’re all pushing each other and trying to achieve the best we can. But the movie should be challenging. You should worry about it when it’s easy.”

2024 Philadelphia Auto Show features test track for electric vehicles, plenty of exotic cars

By Jan Carabeo

January 12, 2024 / 10:09 AM EST / CBS Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It's purple, it's sparkly, it's all electric, and only $413,000.

We got a sneak peek of a Rolls-Royce Spectre, an all-electric super coupe , on display now at the 2024 Philadelphia Auto Show at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

The auto show kicks off Friday night with a Black-tie tailgate for big spenders — general admission starts Saturday, Jan. 13 at 10 a.m. and the show continues through Sunday, Jan. 21. Hours and ticket information are on the auto show's website. General admission tickets are $20 with lower prices for military, children 7-12 and seniors 62 years old and older.

delorean-at-philadelphia-2024-auto-show.jpg

While there, you can see plenty of fancy cars including Aston Martins, Bentleys and this Rolls-Royce. There's also a test track where you can test drive electric vehicles and an exhibit with the cars from movies and TV shows .

We saw the DeLorean from "Back to the Future," the fuzzy "Mutt Cutts" dog van from "Dumb and Dumber" and multiple prop cars from the "Fast and the Furious" movie series.

If you want a map of the floor plan, it's on the website  PhillyAutoShow.com .

More on the 2024 Rolls-Royce Spectre

The purple color outside extends to the interior too.

interior-purple-rolls-royce-spectre.jpg

Anyone who's both a James Bond film lover and car enthusiast could tell you that Rolls-Royce names many of its cars after ghosts-  there's the Wraith model seen in the movie "Spectre" and the Phantom III in "Goldfinger."

Bond probably wouldn't go for this car, though, as the Rolls-Royce Spectre shares the name of the crime syndicate he's trying to fight in the series.

Meet the villain's $1 million Jaguar from James Bond's 'Spectre'

In "Spectre," James Bond's 24th adventure, the car driven by the villain is getting as much attention as, if not more than, 007's iconic Aston Martin (a DB10, this time around). In the film, a villainous henchman, called "Mr. Hinx," driving an orange Jaguar C-X75, engages in a high-speed chase with Bond's bespoke Aston through the streets of Rome.

Although Bond's Q-prepared Aston Martin is an absolute work of art, one can't help but be impressed by the sexy, or possibly terrifying, Jaguar.

"The C-X75 programme represents the pinnacle of Jaguar's engineering and design expertise," Jaguar global brand director Adrian Hallmark said in a statement. "It is arguably the world's fastest test-bed for the world's most advanced technologies, combining as it does a remarkable hybrid powertrain with awe-inspiring performance."

For most people, the Jaguar C-X75 is a stunning movie prop. But the reality is that the car has lived a short, but eventful, life filled with stunning achievement and untapped potential.

Here's a closer look at the sleek super car.

"Spectre" is playing in US theaters now.

Last year, Jaguar rolled out its "Good to be Bad" advertising campaign with a glorious Super Bowl Commercial.

But with the latest Bond flick, Jag has taken it to another level.

cars in james bond spectre

Not only is Jaguar providing the main villain car — its Land Rover sister brand will provide a Defender and Range Rover Sport SVR for evil transportation, as well.

On the other hand, the DB10 features a more conventional front-engined layout found on most GT sports cars.

For most people, "Spectre" will be the first time they set eyes on the menacing Jag supercar.

In reality, the C-X75 debuted at the 2010 Paris Motor Show to great fanfare.

The award-winning show car is the work of Jaguar design director Ian Callum.

Callum is no stranger to the Bond film series. Sir Ian famously designed Bond's Aston Martin Vanquish, which appeared in 2002's "Die Another Day."

The original C-X75 show car was created to commemorate the Jaguar brand's 75th anniversary.

One of the car's coolest features was its gas-turbine power plant.

In 2011, Jaguar announced that the C-X75 would be developed into a hypercar, carrying a $1.1 million price tag.

The C-X75 prototypes were built by Williams Advanced Engineering, the engineering-development arm of the championship-winning Williams Grand Prix team.

For the planned production cars, Jaguar replaced the turbine with a gas-electric-hybrid system.

The production prototype C-X75s are powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder engine. Combined with an electric-drive system, the C-X75 enters battle with more than 850 horsepower.

According to Jaguar, the hybrid hypercar is capable of sprinting from 0 to 100 mph in just six seconds, with a theoretical top speed of 220 mph.

Although test drivers have consistently surpassed the 200 mph mark, it's unclear how close the development team got to hitting the 220 mph target.

Sadly, Jaguar scrapped its plans for the production car in December 2012. The company cited the ongoing global economic crisis as the reason for the decision.

Fortunately for disappointed fans of the car, Jaguar decided to call it up for one more tour of duty.

For the Bond film, the C-X75 would undergo one more major transformation.

The movie Jags have had the advanced hybrid powertrain replaced with the company's monster 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine found in everything from the F-Type sports car to the Range Rover Sport SUV.

Although not as fast the planned production car, with more than 550 horsepower available, the movie car has plenty of juice to make them rumble.

Plus, the Jag V8 is renowned for making some of the boldest, nastiest, most aggressive sounds in the automotive kingdom.

In total, the "Spectre" production required five examples of the villain Jag.

Williams Engineering constructed four brand new cars ...

Although the Jag featured film-specific modifications, it was not a bespoke design like the Aston Martin DB10.

Jaguar's official stance is that the C-X75 development program has been canceled. With the widespread popularity of the James Bond movie series, interest is beginning to build once again for a production C-X75.

So if you are a fan of the C-X75, keep your fingers crossed. Or better yet, go down to the Jaguar dealership with your checkbook and your exploding pen and convince them personally.
