Global hockey news network, phn’s best shots of the game: ghost pirates extend winning streak to three.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Savannah Ghost Pirates (12-16-3-1) picked up their third consecutive victory with a 4-3 win over the Jacksonville Icemen (16-12-3-0) at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena on Friday night.

Bryce Martin, who was playing in his first game with the Ghost Pirates after being acquired via trade from the Adirondack Thunder earlier this week, wasted no time with his new team and scored the first goal of the game at 2:11. Martin re-directed a centering pass from Mike Ferraro past Icemen goaltender Michael Houser for his first goal of the season and third of his career (43 pro games).

Six minutes later, Jacksonville received a huge opportunity when Sebastian Vidmar was assessed a double minor for high sticking, sending the Icemen to a four-minute power play. The Ghost Pirates successfully killed off the first half of the penalty, but Ivan Chukarov tied the game for the Icemen at 8:39.

Later in the first, Savannah was placed on the power play after Julian Kislin took a tripping penalty. Vidmar got his revenge, scoring his sixth goal of the season at 16:14.

Jacksonville started the second period strongly and tied the game 2-2 off a goal by Christopher Brown at 5:27. It seemed like Jacksonville had all the momentum later in the frame as Carter-Long was penalized for interference.

However, Savannah’s penalty kill unit struck with a shorthanded goal at 14:36 as Joe Fleming buried an odd-man chance. Vidmar recorded a primary assist on Fleming’s third goal of the year. Less than two minutes later, Alex Swetlikoff scored his fourth goal of 2023-24 at 16:25, bolstering Savannah’s lead with an insurance marker.

Jacksonville pushed hard in the third period but was stymied by Ghost Pirates goaltender Michael Bullion, who made several great saves to hold Savannah’s lead. At 17:52, Olivier Nadeau scored with the net empty to make it a 4-3 game.

However, Savannah held on until the final buzzer, taking two points from the Icemen. Bullion made 28 saves for his ninth win this season; the Anchorage, AK, native has won five straight ECHL starts. Savannah went 1-for-4 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.

Savannah will face the Icemen on Saturday, January 6, at 7:00 pm at Enmarket Arena. For ticket information, go to GhostPiratesHockey.com.

Stingrays Scare Ghost Pirates in 5-3 Win

South Carolina Stingrays hockey

SAVANNAH, GA – The South Carolina Stingrays (6-2-0-0) fought back from a two-goal deficit to defeat the Savannah Ghost Pirates (5-2-1-0) by a final score of 5-3 on Friday night. The contest, held at the Enmarket Arena, was the first franchise matchup between the two teams.

Bear Hughes opened the scoring with his fifth goal in the last three games at the 3:36 mark of the first period. Gavin Gould carried the puck across the blue line and sent a pass to Hughes who fired a shot past Savannah’s Darion Hanson for the 1-0 advantage.

The Ghost Pirates bounced back with a pair of goals in the final 4:02 to close out the opening period. Peter DiLiberatore chipped a puck to the slot where Westin Michaud lifted it over Clay Stevenson to tie the game at one goal apiece.

With 10 seconds remaining in the period, Brent Pedersen gave Savannah their first lead of the contest, banking a shot off of a Stingrays’ defender and into the back of the net. The marker was Pedersen’s third of the year and second in the last two games.

After killing off a Stingrays power play, the Ghost Pirates expanded their lead on Connor Corcoran’s first goal of the season. Daniel D’Amato placed a perfect pass to the backdoor where Corcoran redirected the puck for the 3-1 lead just over two minutes into the second period.

The Stingrays stormed back midway through the contest as Carter Turnbull netted his team-leading eighth goal of the season, tying him for the most goals in the ECHL. Turnbull’s patience paid off as he skated the offensive zone and ended up at the right circle where he snapped the shot past Hanson to cut the deficit in half.

South Carolina took advantage of a missed clearing attempt from the Ghost Pirates that resulted in Hughes’ second tally of the night just over two minutes later. Fresh off the bench, Hughes raced into the zone and collected the puck at the right circle where he fired a shot over Hanson to tie the game with his sixth goal of the season.

Entering the third period tied, Michael Kim found the perfect time for South Carolina’s first shorthanded goal of the season. Tarek Baker chipped a pass beyond the Savannah defense where Kim turned on the boosters for the breakaway as he shoveled a shot into the back of the net to regain the Stingrays’ lead with 9:50 remaining in regulation.

Kevin O’Neil placed the game out of reach with 1:16 remaining in the third period as he netted his fifth marker of the season. Savannah pulled their netminder, giving O’Neil an open net to fire a shot from center ice for the 5-3 victory.

The Stingrays continue their 2022-23 campaign this upcoming Tuesday, November 15 when the team heads to Orlando, FL to take on the Solar Bears for the second time this season. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m.

PAVING A NEW ‘ROAD’

While this afternoon’s game come inside of the friendly confines of Bon Secours Wellness Arena, last night’s win over the Ghost Pirates marked the eighth consecutive road victory for the team. The stretch, which began on November 14, is the longest road winning streak in the franchise’s history. The Swamp Rabbits’ lone blemish on their road resume came in just their second trip away from The Well, a 7-4 loss to the Atlanta Gladiators on November 1.

FRANNY FOR THE WIN

Ryan Francis played the part of the game winner on Saturday night at Enmarket Arena, scoring just 1:02 into overtime. The winner, his second in as many games, improved the Ontario Reign prospect to eight points in just four games since being assigned to the Rabbits.

POWER-PLAY PERFORMER

Forward Josh McKechney jumped into a tie with Jake Smith for the team lead in power-play goals, as the Calgary, AB native netted his fourth man-advantage tally of the season. McKechney, who posted 36 points as a rookie last season, has already bested his power-play productivity from the 2022-23 campaign when he recorded three goals on the power-play.

MULTIPLE MULTI-POINTS

Nikita Pavlychev used a pair of assists in last night’s win to jump into third on the team in scoring with 15 points, despite having played in 10 of the team’s 20 games. The multi-point night is the fifth time the centerman has posted a multi-point performance, a mark that is higher than his single-point performance mark of three games. Pavlychev has only been held scoreless in two of his 10 appearances this season .

Savannah will host the 2024 ECHL All-Star Classic. Here's what to expect.

Ghost pirates to host game after ranking among league leaders in attendance in inaugural season.

ghost pirates game last night

Savannah has demonstrated a strong love for minor league hockey in the Savannah Ghost Pirates’ inaugural season.

On Friday, the local franchise and its parent league, the ECHL , showed some love in return.

Savannah has been named the host of the 2024 ECHL All-Star Classic , to be held next January at Enmarket Arena. An exact date has not yet been set.

"We will work with the Ghost Pirates to show the world that Savannah is now also a hockey town," Savannah Mayor Van Johnson said.

The annual midseason exhibition showcases the league’s top players, many of whom go on to National Hockey League careers. According to the ECHL, 70 past all-stars have later played in the NHL, including 54 since 2002.

The ECHL: What you need to know about the league, Savannah Ghost Pirates' rivals

Savannah is among the league leaders in attendance in 2023, averaging 6,765 fans per game in the 7,000-seat facility. The only teams ahead of the Ghost Pirates in average attendance play in more specious arenas.

The ECHL announcement was made during Friday night’s Ghost Pirates game against the Utah Grizzlies. The game was a sellout.

Ghost Pirates player released from hospital after suffering injury during game

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Savannah Ghost Pirates player, Marshall Moise, was discharged from the hospital Saturday night.

The team says Moise went back first into the boards during their game against Jacksonville.

During Ghost Pirate’s practice Tuesday, coaching staff painted an improving picture for Moise.

“It’s pretty good head trauma, but he’s functional. He’s back at his apartment, talking and doing well,” Ghost Pirates Head Coach Rick Bennett said.

Moise was taken to Memorial hospital during Saturday’s game after a hit sent him back first into the boards. Team medical staff say they wanted to make sure Moise was still immediately after the hit as a precaution for his spine.

“The call for spinal immobilization happens due to the fact that he had some loss of consciousness. So, at that point, we’re not able to what is termed ‘clear’ the cervical spine which is what you’re concerned about in those types of situations. It wasn’t necessarily that he had any spinal pain, but it was more the fact that he couldn’t tell what was going on,” athletic trainer Dillon Campbell said.

We now know the forward suffered a concussion and went unconscious during Saturday’s game. Moise’s injuries come amid growing attention on player health following the cardiac arrest of Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin after a hit during Monday Night Football.

Even though the injuries are different, team staff say there’s a risk in any contact sport.

“We saw that on Saturday night here locally, and we saw it nationally last night on Monday Night Football. That’s a risk that these players are willing to take in order to pursue a passion of theirs and a dream of theirs and fulfill that level of competition that they have in them,” Campbell said.

The Ghost Pirate’s athletic trainer says he’s been in situations with patients suffering cardiac arrest. He says each moment is crucial in treating the player.

“Your first thought is ultimately for the player and the patient that is going through that hard situation. But secondly, you have to think about the first responders and the athletic trainers and the doctors that are taking care of them because there is a burden that lies on them to make sure they’re providing the best care possible,” Campbell said.

Back at practice, the Ghost Pirates are hoping to overcome a slew of other injuries throughout the Las Vegas organization that coaches say has made play complicated.

“We’ve been hit pretty hard here with call ups, which is a good thing and a bad thing. It’s good in the fact that the guys here, that’s our job as coaches is to develop these guys for the next level. The bad, sometimes it’s going to hurt your win/loss record,” Bennett said.

Ghost Pirates medical staff say they have a written emergency action plan. After each time the plan is activated, the team reviews the response and looks for improvements.

While staff here says the plan was followed at Saturday’s hockey game, they expect plans nationally to change in the wake of what happened at Monday night’s Bill’s game.

The Ghost Pirate’s athletic trainer says the best way to protect players is to have medical staff on hand at both professional and high school sporting events.
