In an instant it stopped. The storm broke. The clouds came apart like curtains. The rain still fell, but softly now. It was as if there had never been a storm at all, except for a single signature. A rainbow, almost violently bright, spread above and across the water. I could see the horizon again.

2. Narrative Essay

A narrative high school essay is similar to a descriptive essay but focuses more on the story description rather than the object description. The story can be about a personal experience that the writer has had, an event, a story, or an incident. Writers can even narrate a fictional experience that they haven’t had. Each day, we have only been given the bare minimum of food, water, and sleep. I don’t know how much longer we can survive before deemed useless by him.

Miriam fell out of her chair and onto the cold concrete floor, screaming in pain. She scrambles for something she can grasp onto to prop her malnourished body up. Then the piercing sound just suddenly stopped. Her thin arms that look only of bones and skin drop to the ground and she lay still on the floor, as if she were…dead. Please don’t tell me she’s dead! No, she couldn’t be; we promised each other to live until the day of liberation.

She needs to live.

It was my turn. He walked over with a syringe full of what had just been injected into Miriam. I try to focus on the red, black, and white badge on his left arm instead of letting the fear crawl in and take over my brain. But the unsettling tension stirs my thoughts around and around.

“Twin A1387, let’s hope what happened to your sister doesn’t happen to you.” He smirked. The needle pierced through my skin and my body was suddenly aflame. The raging blaze spread through every one of my veins, until I was shrouded in darkness.

When I opened my eyes again, I found myself in an empty confinement. The space next to me, the space for Miriam, was empty too. Where was everyone? Most importantly, where was Miriam?

I got up and set my bare foot onto the dirty, wooden floor. Suddenly, my head started spinning and along with it, the world spun too. I fell to the ground, and when I could finally lift my head, what I saw above me terrified me. It was him, death in human form, and beside him were four of his helpers. They grabbed my arms and forced me to stand up.

“Good morning A1387. I am afraid your dear twin sister couldn’t handle the injections from yesterday. Let’s hope your fragile little limbs can endure those chemicals. I wonder how many more injections it will take for you to meet your pathetic sister,” he said, patting my head. His tone was playful, but deadly.

I froze. What? Miriam…dead? That one word, “twins”, has taken away everything of what feels like my past life, and now my last hope? I felt a surge of anger, hatred, sadness, fear, devastation swirling inside me like boiling lava in a volcano, ready to erupt. I wanted to scream, to shout, to kill him, but I couldn’t. My soft limbs felt as if they would collapse merely by trying to stand up. They would be harmless and defenceless against the Angel of Death. When he saw the hatred on my face, he started laughing hysterically and simply said, “What a shame; she was only 13. I cannot wait to see how long it will take for you to fall apart!”

3. Expository Essay

According to Purdue University , the expository essay is a genre of essay that requires the student to investigate an idea, evaluate evidence, expound on the idea, and set forth an argument concerning that idea in a clear and concise manner. To accomplish this, writers use the method of comparison and contrast, definition, example, cause and effect, etc.

Writers are not required to argue or make a personal opinion but to present balanced and well-organized facts and figures.

In an expository essay–as the name suggests–you need to expose the particular subject in question by providing enough information. It is an informative piece of writing that provides a balanced analysis of the topic. It does not contain any personal opinion; instead, it is based on real facts and figures. Therefore, this kind of high school essay is commonly assigned in high school or college in order to test students’ familiarity with a topic and ability to convey information.

This is an example from College Board’s SAT Writing Prompt.  

In response to our world’s growing reliance on artificial light, writer Paul Bogard argues that natural darkness should be preserved in his article “Let There be dark”. He effectively builds his argument by using a personal anecdote, allusions to art and history, and rhetorical questions.

Bogard starts his article off by recounting a personal story – a summer spent on a Minnesota lake where there was “woods so dark that [his] hands disappeared before [his] eyes.” In telling this brief anecdote, Bogard challenges the audience to remember a time where they could fully amass themselves in natural darkness void of artificial light. By drawing in his readers with a personal encounter about night darkness, the author means to establish the potential for beauty, glamour, and awe-inspiring mystery that genuine darkness can possess. He builds his argument for the preservation of natural darkness by reminiscing for his readers a first-hand encounter that proves the “irreplaceable value of darkness.” This anecdote provides a baseline of sorts for readers to find credence with the author’s claims.

Bogard’s argument is also furthered by his use of allusion to art – Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” – and modern history – Paris’ reputation as “The City of Light”. By first referencing “Starry Night”, a painting generally considered to be undoubtedly beautiful, Bogard establishes that the natural magnificence of stars in a dark sky is definite. A world absent of excess artificial light could potentially hold the key to a grand, glorious night sky like Van Gogh’s according to the writer. This urges the readers to weigh the disadvantages of our world consumed by unnatural, vapid lighting. Furthermore, Bogard’s alludes to Paris as “the famed ‘city of light’”. He then goes on to state how Paris has taken steps to exercise more sustainable lighting practices. By doing this, Bogard creates a dichotomy between Paris’ traditionally alluded-to name and the reality of what Paris is becoming – no longer “the city of light”, but moreso “the city of light…before 2 AM”. This furthers his line of argumentation because it shows how steps can be and are being taken to preserve natural darkness. It shows that even a city that is literally famous for being constantly lit can practically address light pollution in a manner that preserves the beauty of both the city itself and the universe as a whole.

Finally, Bogard makes subtle yet efficient use of rhetorical questioning to persuade his audience that natural darkness preservation is essential. He asks the readers to consider “what the vision of the night sky might inspire in each of us, in our children or grandchildren?” in a way that brutally plays to each of our emotions. By asking this question, Bogard draws out heartfelt ponderance from his readers about the affecting power of an untainted night sky. This rhetorical question tugs at the readers’ heartstrings; while the reader may have seen an unobscured night skyline before, the possibility that their child or grandchild will never get the chance sways them to see as Bogard sees. This strategy is definitively an appeal to pathos, forcing the audience to directly face an emotionally-charged inquiry that will surely spur some kind of response. By doing this, Bogard develops his argument, adding gutthral power to the idea that the issue of maintaining natural darkness is relevant and multifaceted.

Writing as a reaction to his disappointment that artificial light has largely permeated the presence of natural darkness, Paul Bogard argues that we must preserve true, unaffected darkness. He builds this claim by making use of a personal anecdote, allusions, and rhetorical questioning.

4. Argumentative Essay

The argumentative high school essay is similar to the expository essay, because it requires writers to present their evidence-based arguments. Writers have to present a thesis statement, gather and evaluate evidence, and establish a position on the topic. Many people think argumentative and expository essays are the same. They belong to a similar genre, but an argumentative essay requires more research than an expository essay. An expository essay is normally used in the SAT test, because test takers are required to investigate and present points from the prompts given. An argumentative essay is generally used in a final project or a capstone, which requires length and detailed research. The essay is divided into 3 parts: introduction, body, and conclusion. The introduction has a topic and thesis statement, the body has evidence and arguments, and the conclusion summarizes the arguments and potential directions for future research.

Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement above and explain your reasoning for the position you take. subject matter for inspiring great ideas is “commonplace things” may seem initially to be counterintuitive. After all, aren’t great ideas usually marked by their extraordinary character? While this is true, their extraordinary character is as often as not directly derived from their insight into things that had theretofore gone unquestioned. While great ideas certainly can arise through seemingly pure innovation… say, for example, Big Bang cosmology, which developed nearly all of its own scientific and philosophical precepts through its own process of formation, it is nevertheless equally true that such groundbreaking thought was, and is, still largely

a reevaluation of previous assumptions to a radical degree… after all, the question of the ultimate nature of the universe, and man’s place in it, has been central to human thought since the dawn of time. Commonplace things are, additionally, necessary as material for the generation of “the best ideas” since certainly the success among an audience must be considered in evaluating the significance and quality of an idea.

The advent of Big Bang cosmology, which occurred in rudimentary form almost immediately upon Edwin Hubble’s first observations at the Hooker telescope in California during the early 20th century, was the most significant advance in mankind’s understanding of the universe in over 400 years. The seemingly simple fact that everything in the universe, on a very large scale, is moving away from everything else in fact betrays nearly all of our scientific knowledge of the origins and mechanics of the universe. This slight, one might even say commonplace, distortion of tint on a handful of photographic plates carried with it the greatest challenge to Man’s general, often religiously reinforced, conception of the nature of the world to an extent not seen since the days of Galileo. Not even Charles Darwin’s theory, though it created more of a stir than Big Bang cosmology, had such shattering implications for our conceptions of the nature of our reality. Yet it is not significant because it introduced the question of the nature of what lies beyond Man’s grasp. A tremendous number of megalithic ruins, including the Pyramids both of Mexico and Egypt, Stonehenge, and others, indicate that this question has been foremost on humankind’s collective mind since time immemorial. Big Bang cosmology is so incredibly significant in this line of reasoning exactly because of the degree to which it changed the direction of this generally held, constantly pondered, and very ancient train of thought.

Additionally, there is a diachronic significance to the advent of Big Bang cosmology, which is that, disregarding limitations such as the quality of optical devices available and the state of theoretical math, it could have happened at any point in time. That is to say, all evidence points to roughly the same raw intellectual capacity for homo sapiens throughout our history, our progress has merely depended upon the degree of it that a person happens to inherit, a pace that has been increasing rapidly since the industrial revolution. Yet this discovery had to happen at a certain point in time or another—it cannot have been happening constantly or have never happened yet still be present—and this point in time does have its own significance. That significance is precisely the fact that the aforementioned advent must have occurred at precisely the point in time at which it truly could have occurred—that is to say, it marks the point in our history when we had progressed sufficiently to begin examining, with remarkable substantiated acuity, the workings of the universe across distances that would take millions of human lifetimes to reach or to traverse. The point for the success of this advent must necessarily have been, additionally, the point at which the audience concerned was capable and prepared to accept such a radical line of reasoning.

Both factors, a radical, passionate interpretation of the commonplace and the preparedness to accept such an interpretation, are necessary for the formulation of a truly great idea. If the passion is absent from an inquiry by the thinker or by the bulk of an audience, the idea will die out if it comes to fruition at all. If the material is not sufficiently commonplace to be considered by an informed audience of sufficient size, the same two hazards exist. Given these two factors, the idea must still be found palatable and interesting by the audience if it is to hope to gain a foothold and eventually establish itself in a significant fashion.

In particular, the recent technology for genome editing called CRISPR has been having a groundbreaking impact on research in genetic science. This is due to its remarkable potential to simply cure genetic diseases in an embryo before they have a serious effect on further developmental progression. Although currently, there have been numerous debates regarding its extension in research for widespread uses, CRISPR is a completely promising technology because of the benefits it brings to people.

CRISPR, or Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats, is the newest innovation in genetic engineering. The way CRISPR works is similar to “the scissor-like action of Cas 9 to target… any specific DNA sequence” (Baylis and Rossant). By making cuts in specific locations in DNA, CRISPR can cure diseases and make alterations in an embryo’s DNA, which prevent diseases from being passed down to following generations (Baylis and Rossant). Throughout the history, governments and researchers came up with different approaches politically and scientifically in attempt to control population. They hoped to encourage the “richest, wisest and healthiest to breed like rabbits” and the “sick, stupid, and poor to take one for the empire and remain childless” (Comfort 28). The second attempt happened during the 20th century, when the U.S government passed the law preventing marriage and immigration that would threaten a perceived core American “stock.” Another more extreme example was when Nazi sterilization law further advanced this population control approach. Later in the century, a biotechnological approach was established as a safer and more humane way to manage population health (qtd in Comfort 28). “Gene surgery,” which is similar to CRISPR technology, was established and followed by contentious debates regarding ethical issues between disease treatment and human trait enhancements. Currently, there has been a halt in the use of CRISPR because of the increase in concern from the public about the pros and cons of this technology.

Introduction: It was the 15th of February, 2006. Our test examination was over and the result was announced duly. Then we, the SSC candidates, were given a formal farewell by the school. It was the last day at school for us.

Description of the Farewell Function on My Last Day at School: For this purpose, a gorgeous program was organized in the school. The seminar room of the school was decorated for the program. The function started at 11 AM. The headmaster presided over the farewell meeting. Some of the outgoing students delivered speeches describing their experiences and appreciation of the teachers, students, and the whole school. Some of the students of the school also delivered speeches showing their love and respect for the departing students. A student of class nine recited a ‘letter of honor devoted to the outgoing students. The outgoing students were presented with flowers and books. The Headmaster made the concluding speech. After the end of the function, we, the outgoing students, met the headmaster and took the dust from his feet. The Headmaster advised us on what to do and what not to do in the examination hall. He also gave us advice on what to do at the last moment of preparation and how to write on the answer sheet to obtain higher marks. Then we went to meet with our honorable teachers. We took dust from their feet one after another. They blessed us and prayed for our success in the examination as well as in our future life.

Conclusion: The day made us sad. It marked a turning point in my life. After long five years in that high school, I was going to part with the school. Tears ran down our cheeks. Tears also welled up in the eyes of our teachers. That day we returned home with heavy hearts.

Essay on “My last day at school” Complete Essay for Class 10, Class 12 and Graduation and other classes.

My last day at school

Saturday, the 20 th Feb, 1977 was my last day at School. On that day we were given preparatory holidays for the Secondary school Examination. The students of class IX arranged a farewell party in honor of the outgoing students of class X.

The school compound was covered with a beautiful shamiana. It was tastefully decorated with buntings and balloons. A stage was set up for speeches and cultural programmed. Under the shamiana, tables and seats were arranged for the students and teachers. The school loudspeaker was filling the atmosphere with the tunes of moving, patriotic film songs.

Students of class X, who were dressed in their best, assembled first of all, in the school garden. ‘There we had a group photographs of small groups of five to six students each. Then we walked up to the school compound, the venue of the Farewell Party. As we entered the compo, the students of class IX welcomed us with cheers. They garlanded us all. We, in turn, garlanded our Principal who always treated us like his own children and the teachers who spared no pains in preparing us for the final examination We took our seats and the programmed started. Our Principal, shri R. P. Goel presided over the function.

First of all, the representative of class IX read out the farewell address. I replied to this address on behalf of the students of class X. I thanked the students of class IX for arranging a grand party. I advised them to try to keep the good traditions of the school in the fields of games, cultural activities and studies. I then, expressed my sense of gratitude to our Principal and teachers who were always kind and nice to us. After this, Manjit, Prem Kant and Party gave us a group song, It was a farewell song and was composed by our Hindi teacher, Sh. A.N. Dixit. All eyes were wet with tears. Our English teacher, Sh. A.N. Saxena, advised us to who is a great scholar and fine speaker, conveyed to us his best wishes and advised us to reach the examination hall well in time. He also told us the method of answering questions in different subjects.

After the speeches were over, we were served with hot tea, samosas,  Barry and fruit. Teachers went round to supervise the arrangement and service done by the student so class IX. This brought the function to an end. I bade farewell to my school and went home.  I shall always remember my last day at school.

Essay No. 2

My Last Day At School

We have joys and sorrows in life. Birth day give us happiness while last day gives us a feeling of sorrow. We have to leave that place. It is a custom in our school that 11 th class students bid – farewell to the 12 th class. They make the parting day attractive. They arrange a parting feast.

This year, 20 th February, was my last day at school. The school bell rang as usual. The 11 th class boys were sad. After the first period the teachers and the students of both classes met in the school hall. The principal and the teachers sat in the chairs. We, the students , took our seats on the chairs.

The function was started by the students of eleventh class. They read poems.  They sang songs. They made speeches suited to the occasion. Every part of the programme was about the outgoing class.

Then our class incharge rose up. He made a speech which moved our hearts. He told us that we would soon enter the field of life. Our care- free  life would end. Soon after we got our school certificates. After passing this examination we would have to face hard realities of life. He advised us to set an aim of our life and try to achieve it with fair means.

Last of all the Principal rose from his seat. There were clapping on all sides. He made a brief speech. He said that the good of the school , that we were leaving for good, should be at the heart of every students. it was the school and its teachers that had prepared us for the struggle of life. He explained in detail, the advantages of simple living and high thinking. He wished us all a successful life.

Then our monitor thanked the Principal, the teachers and the 11th class students for their good wishes. He promised on behalf of his class fellows that they would keep in mind the  lessons taught by the teachers. He assured the Principal and the teachers that they would never forget their school and worthy teachers. He promised to remove ignorance from villages.

After these speeches the grand tea- party took place. Fruits and sweets were   served in great quantities. We ate them to our fill. There was a lot of fun. At 4 P.M., we were photographed. This was the last item of the function. We left the school  with feelings of joy and sorrow. We were sorry to miss the teachers. We had a feeling of sorrow because we were leaving the class fellow as well as our junior companions. All were wishing for our better future. It was a memorable day.

My Last Day at School

The last day at school comes on the conclusion of the academic year of the 12 th class. Before the start of examinations students of this class are given a farewell party by the next lower class. Since such functions are an annual affair, some solemnity is attached to them and students as well as teachers take part in it.  

My last day at school marked by more or less the same feelings. It fell on the 28 th of Feb., 2002. The school hall was decorated. A platform was raised and chairs arranged in many rows. Teachers s tint he front row and since I had been the monitor of my class I was also given a place in the first row. Soon the hall was full.

The occasion was highly emotional. All the outgoing students looked very serious. Everyone seemed to be missing the school days on the one hand and looking forwards into the unknown land of future, all uncertain and vague. No doubt the new life, that is, college life, seemed more glamourous ahead of us but taking the responsibilities of new life seemed more difficult. 

The Principal Presided over the function. Since the examinations were at hand so we could hardly lose any item in making long speeches and unnecessary formalities. The Principal spoke for ten minutes. He recalled the years long association of the  outgoing class with the rest of the school and exhorted other class to follow the example of our class in the best traditions of the  school.  

There was a tea party. The students of the 11 th class were host to it. I was told to speak a few words other, which I did. But soon my heart began to throb at the idea of parting. I recalled how we and played, read and sat together. How we were displeased at one moment and were the same friends at the next. Speaking at such functions was a maiden experience in my life yet I made a fine job of it though I was later told that my voice trembled as I spoke.

The hosts gave us a fare well speech. The monitor of their class, Sanchit Sharma, Spoke highly of us. He recalled the guidance which we had been giving them from time to time. He said that though we were parting from the school this year yet they would join us next year in this great school of life – the world.

Party over, a group photograph was arranged. We were free now. I deposited my borrowed books with the library and got a clearance certificate. The joyful attitude of my heart gave place to anxiety and seriousness. The very idea of examination   at hand completely gripped my mind and I hurried to my house without loss of time to burry my head in books.

Writing an essay is an important basic skill that you will need to succeed in high school and college. While essays will vary depending on your teacher and the assignment, most essays will follow the same basic structure. By supporting your thesis with information in your body paragraphs, you can successfully write an essay for any course!

Planning Your Essay

Step 1 Determine the type of essay you need to write.

  • Expository essays uses arguments to investigate and explain a topic.
  • Persuasive essays try to convince the readers to believe or accept your specific point of view
  • Narrative essays tell about a real-life personal experience.
  • Descriptive essays are used to communicate deeper meaning through the use of descriptive words and sensory details.

Step 2 Do preliminary research on your essay’s topic.

  • Look through books or use search engines online to look at the broad topic before narrowing your ideas down into something more concise.

Step 3 Create an arguable thesis statement

  • For example, the statement “Elephants are used to perform in circuses” does not offer an arguable point. Instead, you may try something like “Elephants should not be kept in the circus since they are mistreated.” This allows you to find supporting arguments or for others to argue against it.
  • Keep in mind that some essay writing will not require an argument, such as a narrative essay. Instead, you might focus on a pivotal point in the story as your main claim.

Step 4 Find reliable sources...

  • Talk to your school’s librarian for direction on specific books or databases you could use to find your information.
  • Many schools offer access to online databases like EBSCO or JSTOR where you can find reliable information.
  • Wikipedia is a great starting place for your research, but it can be edited by anyone in the world. Instead, look at the article’s references to find the sites where the information really came from.
  • Use Google Scholar if you want to find peer-reviewed scholarly articles for your sources.
  • Make sure to consider the author’s credibility when reviewing sources. If a source does not include the author’s name, then it might not be a good option.

Step 5 Make an outline...

  • Outlines will vary in size or length depending on how long your essay needs to be. Longer essays will have more body paragraphs to support your arguments.

Starting an Essay

Step 1 Hook the readers with a relevant fact, quote, or question for the first sentence.

  • Make sure your quotes or information are accurate and not an exaggeration of the truth, or else readers will question your validity throughout the rest of your essay.

Step 2 Introduce your thesis in one sentence.

  • For example, “Because global warming is causing the polar ice caps to melt, we need to eliminate our reliance on fossil fuels within the next 5 years.” Or, “Since flavored tobacco appeals mainly to children and teens, it should be illegal for tobacco manufacturers to sell these products.”
  • The thesis is usually the last or second to last sentence in your introduction.

Step 3 Provide a sentence that’s a mini-outline for the topics that your essay covers.

  • Use the main topics of your body paragraphs as an idea of what to include in your mini-outline.

Step 4 Keep the introduction between 4-5 sentences.

Writing the Body Paragraphs

Step 1 Start each paragraph with a topic sentence.

  • Think of your topic sentences as mini-theses so your paragraphs only argue a specific point.

Step 2 Include evidence and quotes from your research and cite your sources.

  • Many high school essays are written in MLA or APA style. Ask your teacher what format they want you to follow if it’s not specified.

Step 3 Provide your own analysis of the evidence you find.

  • Unless you’re writing a personal essay, avoid the use of “I” statements since this could make your essay look less professional.

Step 4 Use transitional phrases between each of your body paragraphs.

  • For example, if your body paragraphs discuss similar points in a different way, you can use phrases like “in the same way,” “similarly,” and “just as” to start other body paragraphs.
  • If you are posing different points, try phrases like “in spite of,” “in contrast,” or “however” to transition.

Concluding Your Essay

Step 1 Restate your thesis and summarize your arguments briefly.

  • For example, if your thesis was, “The cell phone is the most important invention in the past 30 years,” then you may restate the thesis in your conclusion like, “Due to the ability to communicate anywhere in the world and access information easily, the cell phone is a pivotal invention in human history.”
  • If you’re only writing a 1-page paper, restating your main ideas isn’t necessary.

Step 2 Discuss why the subject of your paper is relevant moving forward.

  • For example, if you write an essay discussing the themes of a book, think about how the themes are affecting people’s lives today.

Step 3 End the paragraph with a lasting thought that ties into your introduction.

  • Try to pick the same type of closing sentence as you used as your attention getter.

Step 4 Include a Works Cited page if you need one.

  • Including a Works Cited page shows that the information you provided isn’t all your own and allows the reader to visit the sources to see the raw information for themselves.
  • Avoid using online citation machines since they may be outdated.

Revising the Paper

Step 1 Determine if your point comes across clearly through your arguments.

  • Have a peer or parent read through your essay to see if they understand what point you’re trying to make.

Step 2 Check the flow of your essay between paragraphs.

  • For example, if your essay discusses the history of an event, make sure your sentences flow in a chronological way in the order the events happened.

Step 3 Rewrite or remove any sections that go off-topic.

  • If you cut parts out of your essay, make sure to reread it to see if it affects the flow of how it reads.

Step 4 Read through your essay for punctuation or spelling errors.

Finish strong! Here’s something I wrote about the topic for Character Lab as a Tip of the Week :

Even now, I have vivid memories of my last day of high school. Do you?

In my mind’s eye, I’m cleaning out my locker, then staring at the emptiness for a few extra beats before slamming it shut for the last time. I’m roaming the halls with my best friend, blissfully ignoring the bells going off every 50 minutes on schedule because, just today, we’re allowed to break the rules. I’m sitting on my desk, swinging my feet, and shooting the breeze with my English teacher, Mr. Carr, in a way that makes me feel almost grown up.

It’s maybe my favorite day of the whole year. And like the final layer of watercolor, the freedom and lightness I feel seeps into the rest of my memories of that day and turns them just a shade rosier.

If the school year hasn’t yet ended for your kids, consider what you can do to make the finale count. Why?

Because when it comes to human memory, not all moments are created equal. Instead, our remembered experiences are disproportionately influenced by peaks (the best moments as well as the worst) and endings (the last moments). Nobel laureate Danny Kahneman, who discovered this phenomenon, dubs this the peak-end rule of hedonic experience.

I took advantage of the peak-end rule years ago, when my girls were young enough to want a bedtime story each night. I remember thinking that whatever strife and stress had occurred that day, I could make the last moments count. I could end on a note of calm and act like the patient mom I hadn’t quite managed to be just hours before.

Don’t mistake all moments as equal in significance. There’s a reason why yoga classes end with savasana. There’s a reason we eat dessert last.

40 years ago, I hightailed it out of Pittsburgh. Last month I came back to see what I’ve missed.

Through the eyes of an 18-year-old, Pittsburgh in 1984 was the definition of a “has been” – a dirty city with old houses, words and phrases that made no sense beyond its borders and not a whole lot of opportunity. All this was clear even as I headed just 50 miles north to Grove City College. 

I grew up in Shaler and attended Vincentian High School, where I played field hockey, complained when movie tickets reached $4 and spent many a day at the McDonald’s on McKnight Road. On my first day of college, I met Jeff, a Baldwin High School grad who I would go on to date throughout college and marry like all good Grovers do in the Grove City chapel.

Then we hightailed it out of The Burgh. Jeff would have stayed, but I was over it. The wanderlust that has culminated in my career as a travel writer was already rearing its beautiful head, and I wanted something different. 

Over the next four decades, we bought our first home in Roanoke, raised our kids in Atlanta, were reminded of what it’s like to shovel snow in Chicago, and made our final move to Houston, where after 20-plus years of teaching in all those states, I settled into full-time writing. During all that time, I never looked back. Family members moved to Florida, so I had no reason to return, and frankly, no desire. I had found newer, warmer, cleaner, better cities, so why go back?

Then I got that alarming invitation that reminded me it had been 40 years since I had graduated high school. It was reunion time, and would I return? For some reason, the number jumpstarted me. I was suddenly curious: What would Pittsburgh feel like after all these years? My curiosity hatched an experiment: I would set out to experience the old and the new of Pittsburgh. What had changed and what remained unchanged from when I lived in the City of Champions all those years ago?

Potholed roads to forested enclaves

“Good Lord,” I said to Jeff, as we began navigating the roads from the airport. “The same crappy roads, winding all over the place, coming from all directions. Nothing’s changed here.”

My husband, who is as fair as a judge and considerably more objective than I, answered, “I love that we learned to drive here. If you can drive here, you can drive anywhere.” And he’s right! Even living in some of the busiest cities in the nation, I’ve never experienced the combination of steep, winding, pot-holed, 10-seconds-to-merge roads that dominate Pittsburgh. 

I rolled my eyes, but my frustration dissipated when we drove across the West End Bridge. There was The Point, looking oh-so-beautiful, its burst of water eliciting a rush of emotional memories – Fourth of July fireworks, picnics on the lawn, the last view I had from the window of a hospital where my father-in-law lay dying. From there, I gazed up at the Trimont, which I had helped promote as a public relations intern at DDF&M Advertising in Gateway Center.  

Driving to my old house in Shaler on Wible Run Road was disconcerting — everything looked smaller as an adult. When I saw a new EMS facility built over the spot where firemen used to turn on their hoses to create an ice rink, it felt like a piece of my childhood had died. But Kiwanis Park was exactly as I remembered it, and I could still see myself swimming laps as a Shaler Seadog and licking a candy spoon dipped in Fun Dip, grass tickling my wet legs.  

Mostly, I was struck by how lush everything had become, yards overflowing with flowers and bushes and mature trees creating forested enclaves for homes with the Pittsburgh-traditional yellow brick. I’m in awe that the same homes are still there, not bulldozed and modernized as so many were in Houston and Atlanta.

Terrible Towels to spacecraft

Along that vein, The William Penn, arguably the Grand Dame of Pittsburgh since opening in 1916, has remained stoically regal. As I checked in at the gilded reception desk, I noted a gift shop with Terrible Towels — invented in 1975 — displayed just feet away from crystal chandeliers and velvet banquettes. It was a powerful reminder that Pittsburgh roots are deep, wide and unapologetically exposed.

I saw it again and again with the Burgh Bits & Bites Food Tour in the Strip District. Did you know that out of the 90 neighborhoods in Pittsburgh, the Strip is the most visited? This 1 1/2-mile flat stretch of land has served as a produce distribution center and a local business hub for over 100 years. It’s survived everything from the Great Depression to COVID-19, and walking it is like taking a step back in time. I sampled cinnamon bread from Mancini’s Bakery, drooled over hot soppressata at Parma Sausage, ate the best baklava on the planet at Labad’s Mediterranean Grocery & Café and devoured Greek delicacies at Stamoolis. At My Sweet Lily, I was reminded of the Pittsburgh Cookie Table, a staple at every firehall wedding, baptism and graduation I ever attended. 

With a full belly, I visited a museum that didn’t exist when I was a kid – the Andy Warhol, which opened in 1994. Warhol famously called Pittsburgh a “culturally bankrupt town,” and I couldn’t disagree more. It may have taken a few decades, but Pittsburgh has proven Warhol’s statement wrong. After all, it celebrates Warhol’s utter weirdness, and it cultivates more culture in its compact footprint than most sprawling big cities. Old standbys like the National Aviary and the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens remain largely unchanged, as they should. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

As I explored these landmarks, I found one that many current Pittsburghers don’t even know about: the Moonshot Museum, opened in 2022. How cool is it that yesterday’s steel workers and engineers have evolved into the fields of robotics and space exploration? Jeff, an engineer who interned at Westinghouse, was fascinated by the fact that this museum is the only place in the nation where you can see spacecraft under construction.

Other new (to me) developments include the massive David L. Lawrence Convention Center, Rivers Casino, Heinz Lofts in the old Heinz factory building, and apartments sharing space with Target in the historic Kauffman’s Department Store where everyone shopped back in the day. 

I got my first glimpse of Acrisure Stadium and had no idea what it was until I recognized it as the former Heinz Field, built long after I left. And there was the new-to-me PNC Park, looking nothing like its predecessor, Three Rivers Stadium, where I cheered on Willie Stargell and waved my mitt high in the air with dreams of catching a ball. (Side note: My sister was smacked in the nose by a foul fly and went home with a ball signed by all the 1979 World Series champs).

My journey then took me to The Oaklander, a hip 5-year-old hotel with a 10th-floor lobby and guest suites boasting floor-to-ceiling windows and views of the Cathedral of Learning, Schenley Park and Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall. I appreciated The Oaklander’s attention to Pittsburgh history (artifacts and design elements highlight the city’s firsts and notables), along with its cool, contemporary vibe. Spirits & Tales, its signature restaurant, served up food and cocktails to rival anything you’d find in a foodie city. 

Speaking of food, I found surprising comfort in returning to Pittsburgh’s eclectic cultural cuisine. The meal we are still raving about came from DiAnoia’s Eatery. The meatball recipe, passed down by the co-owner’s grandma, stemmed from a story so quintessentially Pittsburgh — orders to ship out for World War II, an impromptu spaghetti dinner and a resulting reassignment as base chef — that I had to try them for myself. That led to a veal parmesan sandwich and the porchetta, two dishes that reminded me so deliciously of the hearty, inexpensive comfort food I grew up on. I can honestly say that I’ve never eaten Italian food as good as what you’ll find in Pittsburgh, and that’s a big statement from a world traveler. 

I couldn’t leave The Burgh without a sail on the Gateway Clipper. Jeff noted that his Senior Rec Day took place on this boat, and that was the last time he had boarded it. It looked exactly the same, 40 years later. Yes, tired and well-worn. But I learned more about Pittsburgh in that one-hour narration than during all the years it was my hometown. Pittsburgh is available via waterway from anywhere on Earth? Indeedy. Pittsburgh has more bridges than anywhere else in the world? Take that, Venice! It’s fascinating what you learn when you play tourist in your hometown.

But that last sail revealed so much more than just factoids for some future Trivia Night. It showed me the unwavering heart of Pittsburgh. Stadiums that sacrifice seating that would have brought big ticket money in favor of views of the three rivers. Inclines that still traverse Mount Washington, where a red and white Iron City sign boldly proclaims beer dominance. PNC Park prominently displaying a blue “42” in a lawn of retired jersey numbers. Monuments to veterans dotting the same shore as a sneaker-tying, sweater-wearing Mister Rogers statue.

I walked away with not just a new appreciation of my old town, but with a desire to experience more of it, to maybe even return to it. I don’t know what’s next for me, but I know that I’m not yet done with Pittsburgh.
