TECNO goes global: The PHANTOM X2 Series leads the charge in premium innovation

Tecno Phantom X2 Series Promotional Banner 1

If there’s one company that has truly moved the needle in recent years in terms of global recognition and innovation, it’s TECNO. The brand was a dark horse outside of a few locales, but now it’s making head-turning strides in over 70 markets globally.

The key products that are catching attention? Those on its PHANTOM flagship line.

The PHANTOM X2 series: Going premium

Tecno Phantom X2 Series Face Down

The PHANTOM X2 Pro 5G dropped jaws at its BEYOND EXTRAORDINARY TECNO Flagship Product Launch 2022 event in Dubai on December 7.

The reason is simple. The PHANTOM X2 Pro 5G showcases a retractable portrait camera lens, the first of its kind in the market.

This striking effect is not merely aesthetic, as it’s a direct result of design innovations featuring MediaTek’s powerful Dimensity 9000 processor. The retractable portrait lens allows users to capture natural bokeh and depth-of-field effects without relying on software blurring processes.

Both models of the PHANTOM X2 Series position themselves firmly in the market vertical of Premium.

What are users hungry for in an ideal smartphone experience? They want a snappy user experience powered by a robust processor (and supported by RAM), exquisite camera quality, a solid battery life (that charges quickly, mind), and enough memory that they never have to think about it.

TECNO is opting to aim for “better than best” by maxing out all the features users love. And how does it do this? Well, we already mentioned the ground-breaking camera , and both models are equipped with the aforementioned MediaTek Dimensity 9000 processor, sport between 8-12GB of RAM, have 256GB of storage, and, yes, the 5,160mAh battery supports 45W rapid charging.

Product ecosystems, partnership ecosystems, planet ecosystems

Tecno Executives at Phantom X2 Pro launch

By “ecosystems,” we mean several things here.

For one, TECNO is creating a thought-leadership ecosystem by collaborating with industry leaders to redefine the premium experience. The brand is expanding its range of partnerships from MediaTek to Google to Intel to Microsoft and, more so it can continue to push the envelope on what we even think is possible with our devices.

Second, you can go ahead and include the literal ecosystem, since the PHANTOM X2 PRO 5G offers a unique Eco-Friendly edition that comes with a microfiber back cover made from environmentally friendly recycled materials. In an age of rising environmental concerns, it wouldn’t be surprising to see more offerings like this from the company in the future to meet a growing market demand for eco-friendly products.

Third, TECNO is deploying its AIoT Ecosystem, which includes tablets, smart home devices, wearable devices, and laptops. Most notable among the last of these is the MEGABOOK S1 laptop, which also launched at the BEYOND THE EXTRAORDINARY TECNO Flagship Product Launch in 2022. This super lightweight and high-powered device is designed from the ground up to interact seamlessly with new and existing components within the AIoT Ecosystem.

TECNO’s brand essence of “Stop at Nothing” drives the company’s determination to enter the global high-end market and its ambition to deliver state-of-the-art innovation through a wide range of devices across verticals. TECNO seems committed to creating stylish, intelligent products that it hopes will inspire consumers worldwide to never stop pursuing their best selves and their best futures. This brand strategy of product proliferation clearly speaks to TECNO’s ambitions to become a household staple across the globe.

TECNO is stopping at nothing

Tecno Flagship Product Launch 2022

User experience is a key focus for TECNO, and the brand is committed to delivering the best possible experience for its customers in all markets around the world. To achieve this, TECNO focuses on globalization, continuously improving and adapting its products and services to meet the diverse needs of users in over 70 markets globally. TECNO’s unique approach to globalization allows it to stand out in the crowded tech market, offering customers around the world innovative and high-quality products that are tailored to their specific needs and preferences.

Indeed, “Stop at Nothing” are words near and dear to operations at TECNO. The brand seems truly deadset on creating unforgettable user experiences and pushing beyond the boundaries of what we expect from every piece of technology in our lives. “Our constant pursuit of the next great innovation is revolutionizing how millions of users experience and share their lives every day,” said Jack Guo, General Manager of TECNO. “We make no secret of our aspiration to become the world’s most renowned innovative technology brand while never losing sight of the fact that our customers are at the center of all we do.”

If there’s a brand to watch in 2023 and beyond, it’s TECNO.

TECNO's PHANTOM X2 series are Pioneering Smartphones with innovative features and powerful hardware

This post is sponsored by TECNO.

PHANTOM, a premium sub-brand of TECNO, announced the PHANTOM X2 Pro 5G and PHANTOM X2 5G back in December. These phones are next-gen flagships that deliver a premium smartphone experience. Both models pack impressive internals, such as MediaTek's flagship Dimensity 9000 chipset and a gorgeous, curved AMOLED display, along with some unique smart features and an eco-friendly design. The Pro model even features a retractable portrait lens.

Even without the upgrade to the Pro model, the PHANTOM X2 series stands out in a big way, which is why we select these phones as our Pioneering Smartphones in 2022.

PHANTOM X2 5G series: Specifications

Impressive camera hardware with the world's first retractable portrait lens.

One of the PHANTOM X2 Pro 5G's showstopper features is its innovative retractable portrait camera lens. The tech allows users to capture stunning portraits with optical bokeh without needing a DSLR or another professional camera. Bokeh is tough to capture on smartphone cameras (although image processing software can help achieve this effect), but this 65mm lens has a 2.5x optical zoom and a large f/1.49 aperture, which creates a shallow 18.9cm depth of field that helps with creating professional-looking images.

In addition to the groundbreaking portrait camera, the PHANTOM X2 Pro 5G has two additional cameras that are just as praiseworthy, including a 50MP main camera and a 13MP ultrawide shooter. The 50MP main camera boasts a high transmittance 7P lens and a large GNV 1.2µm 1/1.3-inch sensor that increases light sensitivity by 10%, which helps users capture shots with great detail even in low light conditions.

The regular PHANTOM X2 5G also boasts impressive camera hardware, including a 64MP main camera with a 5P + 1G glass lens for increased transmittance and reduced glare. The camera also has an RGBW sensor, which adds white pixels to the traditional RGB pixel arrangement and improves light intake by 60%.

Both phones also feature an upgraded Super Night photo mode that further reduces noise, along with a new Beautification Mode that lets users adjust natural features to their liking and apply upgraded makeup filters.

Powered by MediaTek’s flagship chipset

In terms of performance, the PHANTOM X2 series does not disappoint. It's powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 9000 chipset based on TSMC's 4nm process. This is a flagship-level chip featuring powerful Arm Cortex-X2, Cortex-A710 and Cortex-A510 CPU cores, and a Mali-G710 GPU. The chipset is paired with up to 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB of superfast UFS 3.1 flash storage, ensuring a smooth and seamless experience, no matter what tasks you throw at the phone. Whether you're playing the latest games, streaming movies, or running multiple apps at once, the PHANTOM X2 series won't let you down.

The unique unibody double-curved design is a sight to behold

The PHANTOM X2 series also stands out with its unique unibody, double-curved design that integrates the screen and back panel with a thin metal middle frame, creating a smooth and seamless look. On the front, the phone has a gorgeous 6.8-inch, curved AMOLED display, which is perfect for watching movies, playing games, or reading. The 120Hz refresh rate ensures everything you see on the screen is super smooth and responsive, while the 20:9 aspect ratio provides a more cinematic experience when watching videos. The display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus for added durability, ensuring it can withstand accidental drops and wear and tear during everyday use.

Battery life is another area where the PHANTOM X2 series shines. The 5,160mAh marathon battery is enough to keep you going all day long. And when it does start to run low, the phone's 45W fast charging support means that you can quickly top it up and get back into action in no time.

On the software front, the PHANTOM X2 series runs HiOS 12 based on Android 12. This is highly optimized for the phone and offers a range of innovative and powerful features, including IDA Engine 3.0, which boosts cellular speeds by 45% and Wi-Fi downlink speeds by 300%, AI-Gallery 5.0 with intuitive and organized album features and editing functions, and intelligent face recognition.

HiOS also includes several unique smart features to make your life easier. With Smart Panel 3.0, users can access features like AI subtitles, page translation, and simultaneous interpretation in Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet. Master of Language 2.0 is another handy feature that helps to break down language barriers with page content, photo, and face-to-face translations. There's Super Files, which automatically extracts text from a photo of a document and converts it into an editable file, and a File Correction feature that automatically corrects and adjusts documents that have been photographed, ensuring that they are correctly formatted and easy to view.

Eco-friendly products help you feel good about your purchase

PHANTOM has also unveiled a special edition model called the PHANTOM X2 Pro 5G Eco-Friendly Edition, which boasts a pioneering environmentally-friendly back cover. Each cover contains 14.4% recycled material and reduces carbon emissions by up to 38% compared to virgin plastics. PHANTOM is committed to environmental protection and hopes its efforts to create eco-friendly products will encourage consumers worldwide to embrace sustainable lifestyles. The PHANTOM X2 Pro 5G Eco-friendly Edition is just one example of the company's commitment to sustainability and its efforts to create products that have a minimal environmental impact.

Why we name the PHANTOM X2 series our Pioneering Smartphones

The PHANTOM X2 5G and PHANTOM X2 Pro 5G are truly pioneering smartphones thanks to their envelope-pushing hardware and advanced features. The Pro model, in particular, stands out with its innovative retractable portrait lens, which allows users to capture stunningly pure optical bokeh, without needing a professional camera. Both models are powered by MediaTek's flagship Dimensity 9000 chipset, have large main cameras, feature 12GB RAM, and sport a gorgeous curved AMOLED display. They both also have 5,160mAh marathon batteries with 45W fast charging support. The HiOS 12 skin, based on Android 12, is also highly optimized for the phone.

With all of these features, the PHANTOM X2 Pro 5G and X2 5G are sure to be a top choice for smartphone enthusiasts anywhere.

Tecno Phantom X2 Pro review: Intriguing design, irksome software

Tecno's latest phone has a back made out of recycled ocean plastic, but the software is in need of an overhaul..

Tecno Phantom X2 Pro review

Android Central Verdict

The Phantom X2 Pro gets a lot right on the hardware side of things. I like the vibrant orange hue and the fact that the back is made out of recycled ocean plastic, and the Dimensity 9000 is great in daily use. The 50MP camera takes good photos, there's a retractable portrait lens, and the battery lasts all days. However, the software lacks refinement and misses out on basic features, and the phone will not get platform updates on time. Ultimately, the lackluster software detracts from what is a good hardware package.

Unique design that reuses plastic waste

Vibrant 120Hz AMOLED screen

Reliable MediaTek hardware

Good cameras

All-day battery

Launching with Android 12

Heavily-skinned software lacks refinement

Lot of bloatware out of the box

Tecno isn’t a brand that will be familiar to may in the west, but the Chinese manufacturer is a major player in Africa, where it edged out Samsung last year to become the largest phone brand. Tecno is a part of Transsion Holdings and follows a similar structure as BBK , counting other phone brands Itel and Infinix as siblings.

While BBK focused on key Asian markets and is now making inroads in the west, Tecno turned to Africa to drive momentum outside its home market. Tecno has a large retail network in key countries in the African region, and the brand is now targeting other emerging markets. It already has a foothold in India and the Middle East, and is looking to gain market share in these countries with its latest devices.

I haven't covered Tecno much, but that's changing with the Phantom X2 Pro. The Phantom series covers the high-end category in Tecno's portfolio, and the latest model has a lot to offer: the Phantom X2 Pro is the first phone to feature a retractable portrait lens, and it has a unique back made out of recycled ocean plastic. With Tecno gearing up for a global launch for the Phantom X2 Pro, let's take a look at what you're getting with the device, and whether it can go up against more established brands.

Tecno Phantom X2 Pro: Pricing and availability

Tecno unveiled the Phantom X2 Pro at a launch event in Dubai on December 7, 2022, and the device is going on sale in a few weeks. There are two variants in the Phantom X2 series: a standard model and a Pro version. The Pro model gets the retractable lens and uses the Dimensity 9000, and you get a back made out of ocean plastic, 50MP Samsung camera, and 5160mAh battery. The standard Phantom X2 has the same internal hardware but comes with a 64MP camera instead of the 50MP lens.

The Phantom X2 comes in Stardust Grey and Moonlight Silver color variants, and includes 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage as standard, with Tecno following in the heels of Xiaomi and other Chinese brands in rolling out 256GB as the base storage tier. The Pro model is available in Stardust Grey and Mars Orange variants, and features 12GB of RAM along with the same 256GB of storage.

The Phantom X2 series is launching in over 60 countries, but it will not be coming to Europe or North America. As stated earlier, Tecno's key focus is emerging markets, and the Phantom X2 Pro will be available starting in India, Nigeria, Kenya, Saudi Arabia, Colombia, Turkey, and the Philippines.

In Saudi Arabia, the standard Phantom X2 will start off at 2,699 Saudi Riyal ($717), with the Phantom X2 Pro going on sale for 3,499 Saudi Riyal ($930). Tecno says those figures are in line with what the devices will cost in other markets.

Tecno Phantom X2 Pro: Design and screen

The obvious talking point with the design is the camera housing at the back. I've seen a lot of interesting designs over the course of 2022, and Tecno's ridiculously large rings for the camera modules is one of the most striking yet. It is similar to what ASUS did with the Zenfone 9 , but the modules are even larger here. That said, the oversized design works really well here, and it gives the device a bit more of a distinctive design.

The bold styling combined with the vibrant orange hue gives the Phantom X2 Pro a lot of character — the best part is the use of recycled materials.

Tecno is going up against the likes of Xiaomi, Vivo, and Samsung, so it needs to do something a little different to stand out. The camera housing is a great starting point, and the brand followed that up with a unique Mars Orange color variant that's made out of recycled ocean plastic sourced in the Indian Ocean. This isn't a regular plastic finish like the Galaxy S21 FE , but has a gritty texture that's more in line with the vegan leather back of the Find X2 Pro .

This texture gives the phone a lot of character, and having used a lot of devices with glass and polycarbonate backs this year, the Phantom X2 Pro stands out thanks to the vibrant hue and the materials used. Tecno says it was able to cut down on carbon emissions by 38% by using recycled materials, with individual back covers producing 2.4g fewer emissions on average. That's a pittance when you factor in the global manufacturing industry, but every little bit makes a difference, and I like the fact that Tecno went this route for the Phantom X2 Pro.

The rest of the design is just as interesting: the aluminum mid-frame has the same orange hue as the back, and the subtle curves at the front and back make holding and using the phone a delight. The build quality and fit and finish are on par with the best Android phones , and there are absolutely no issues in this area. Coming in at 195g, it isn't too heavy either.

Like most brands, Tecno has forgotten about the 3.5mm jack and MicroSD slot, but you do get a dual-SIM tray here, and the package includes a charger and USB-C earbuds. What's a more egregious omission is ingress protection; with other devices offering this feature as standard nowadays, the Phantom X2 Pro is on the backfoot.

Overall, Tecno did a great job reusing plastic waste for the back cover, and the bright orange hue makes the Phantom X2 Pro that much more interesting. I would have liked to see ingress protection of some sort, but other than that, the Phantom X2 Pro  nails the basics.

The Phantom X2 Pro has a large 6.8-inch AMOLED panel with FHD+ (2400 x 1080) resolution and 120Hz refresh, and there is a lot to like here. The panel has good colors and is vibrant in outdoors use, and there is a decent amount of customizability in tweaking the color balance.

You also get an always-on mode, and similar to ColorOS and MIUI, you have a good selection of clock styles available. Tecno uses smart refresh rate switching out of the box, but it's easy enough to select the 120Hz mode as default in the settings. The interface feels smooth to navigate, and the high refresh works well in Chrome and social media.

Tecno Phantom X2 Pro: Hardware and battery

The Phantom X2 Pro is powered by MediaTek's 4nm Dimensity 9000. With the Dimensity 9200 now official, it would have been nice to see the phone feature MediaTek's latest platform, but the Dimensity 9000 has a lot to offer as we head into 2023. I used a few phones with the Dimensity 9000 in recent months, and it does a great job at intensive workloads while still managing to deliver good efficiency figures.

Thanks to the Dimensity 9000, you won't find any slowdowns here.

I'm not going to talk about the hardware too much as the Dimensity 9000 is a known quantity at this point. I didn't see any slowdowns whatsoever in the week that I used the X2 Pro, and the 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage is more than adequate for most users. The phone has Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3, and I didn't see any issues in this area. There's a decent selection of 5G bands as well — 1/3/8/28/38/40/41/77/78/79 — along with global 4G connectivity.

The phone is fluid in daily use, and does a good job with visually-intensive titles. The one issue I have is with the vibration motor; it doesn't deliver good feedback and comes across a bit flat when using gesture navigation and the keyboard. I haven't run into this particular problem with most devices in 2022, and this is an area that Tecno needs to address with subsequent launches.

Switching over to the battery side of things, the Phantom X2 Pro has a large 5160mAh battery that lasts all day without any issues. Even with heavy use, you should have no issues getting the phone to the end of the day. Tecno doesn't use the USB PD standard, instead relying on its own 45W charging tech. The bundled charger does a good job charging the device fully in over an hour, but you miss out on wireless charging.

Tecno Phantom X2 Pro: Cameras

Tecno isn't particularly well-known for its camera tuning, but the brand is aiming to change that with the Phantom X2 Pro. A good starting point in doing that is the hardware, and the device has plenty to offer in this area. There's a 50MP Samsung GNV 1/1.3-inch module with large 1.2 micron pixels — the same as the Vivo X80 Pro — and that's joined by a 13MP wide-angle lens that also doubles up for macro shots, and a new 50MP portrait module with a retractable lens.

The 50MP module is highlighted with an orange accent, and it is pretty cool to see the lens jut out of the chassis when portrait mode is activated. You can manually retract the lens, and the camera will close as a result. The lens switches to 2.5x mode when extended, and in the standard 1x mode it stays inside the chassis.

Using a phone with a retractable lens is just as interesting as devices from three years ago that had motorized front camera modules, and the novelty doesn't wear off. That said, I'm not sure the retractable motor is as durable here. The camera interface itself is standard fare, with the shooting modes laid out in a ribbon and the filters for AI scene recognition, timer, full-res 50MP mode, and settings easily accessible.

Having never used a Tecno phone before, I wasn't sure about the quality of the images. I was pleasantly astonished in this regard; the Phantom X2 Pro delivers vibrant photos with great dynamic range and color accuracy in daylight conditions, and while the hardware on offer is among the best available, there is a lot of tuning work needed to get consistent photos.

The phone did a great job in low-light situations as well, producing shots with good colors and little to no visible noise. Highlights are managed well, and while the phone tends to shoot at lower ISO levels to minimize noise, you don't miss out on too much detail. The portrait lens is fantastic as well, offering creamy bokeh and doing a great job with background segmentation. The default shooting mode uses AI for scene recognition, and it did a decent job locking in on subjects and identifying various scenes.

The wide-angle lens isn't quite up to the mark, but it manages to deliver usable shots most of the time. The dedicated night mode makes a huge difference for low-light shots, and it automatically kicks in if the camera detects the ambient lighting to be too low.

Overall, the Phantom X2 Pro does a great job in this area. You get good photos in any lighting situation, and the retractable lens at the back is a fun inclusion that makes a difference.

Tecno Phantom X2 Pro: Software

This is the first time I’ve used a Tecno phone, and I was interested in seeing what the software has to offer. The Phantom X2 Pro runs HiOS 12 based on Android 12 , and it is a heavily customized skin that looks very different to other brands. Setting up the phone is straightforward; Google mandates all manufacturers to use a similar flow, so transferring data to the device was familiar.

Tecno's HiOS 12 is unrefined and heavily skinned — it's clear that the brand needs to do a lot of work in this area.

That said, there are a few translation errors when configuring the in-screen reader, and it feels like the interface is designed for a Chinese audience with the global version getting direct translations to English. The home screen looks familiar, but the notification shade is split into a Control Center-esque toggles section and a pane that only surfaces notifications.

I'm not a fan of this layout, and while other interfaces follow a similar structure — MIUI comes to mind — there is a way to switch back to the standard Android notification pane with both toggles and notifications in the same view. That isn't possible here.

What's more annoying is that there's no way to customize the pull-down gesture to surface the notification pane. I use this gesture a few dozen times a day to see incoming notifications, but in HiOS 12 the gesture pulls up the search bar. There's no way to change this behavior, and the interface makes it harder than necessary to access notifications. Other frustrations include not being able to arrange the home screen easily; you can't delete icons en masse. There's no Google dialer either, with Tecno bundling its own alternative.

There's a lot of stuff baked into HiOS, including floating windows similar to MIUI, edge panels, and the ability to run two instances of a service (limited to messaging services). The app drawer looks cluttered because of the alphabetized listing, and it isn't possible to switch this layout. You'll find a lot of bloatware installed out of the box here, and while most of it can be disabled, that isn't the case for Tecno's own utilities.

The Phantom X2 Pro will only get the Android 13 update in the second or third quarter of 2023.

The most egregious of these is a digital assistant called Ella. It's limited in its usability and is frustrating to use, and the fact that you cannot disable it is irksome — even Samsung lets you disable Bixby on its devices.

Using the interface reminded me a lot of the initial days of MIUI, ColorOS, and EMUI, when these interfaces lacked polish and were tailored for the Chinese market. HiOS has some way to go in this area, and while it gets a few things right, it's clear that Tecno has a long way to go. And on that subject, there's no mention of how many platform updates the Phantom X2 Pro will get.

The phone is launching with Android 12 in December 2022 — three months after Google officially released the latest version of Android — and looking at Tecno's history, it looks like a long wait before Android 13 makes its way to the device. While Tecno didn't reveal a timeline for when the Phantom X2 Pro will get Android 13, the brand stated that the rollout will be sometime in the second or third quarter of 2023, and that just doesn't cut it for a device in this category.

Tecno Phantom X2 Pro: The competition

There's no shortage of choice if you're looking for a device with high-end hardware. I'm a big fan of the Xiaomi 12 series; Xiaomi nailed the design and in-hand feel with this generation, and the device has exciting hardware combined with a stellar camera, useful software features, and fast wired and wireless charging tech.

Realme's GT 2 Pro is also an underrated device that gets a lot right. It has an interesting design at the back, reliable hardware, same great screen as the rest of BBK's high-end portfolio, and a good set of software features. The GT 2 Pro is now selling in India for ₹49,999 ($605), and that's a great value for what you're getting.

Tecno Phantom X2 Pro: Should you buy it?

You should buy this if:

  • You're looking for a phone with a unique back
  • You want reliable hardware
  • You need cameras that take good photos
  • You want a phone that lasts all day with heavy use

You shouldn't buy this if:

  • You want a phone with uncluttered software
  • You need ingress protection or wireless charging
  • You're looking for timely software updates

Tecno got a lot of things right on the hardware front with the Phantom X2 Pro, but that is the case with most phones these days. It's the software that is the bigger differentiator, and Tecno is significantly lagging behind its Chinese rivals in this area. HiOS 12 is heavily customized, has a lot of unnecessary features that don't have a lot of utility, and the interface lacks refinement. Combine that with a lackadaisical attitude toward updates and you have a phone that doesn't measure up to the likes of the Xiaomi 12, Find X5, and Vivo X90.

Ultimately, it doesn't make much sense to pick up the Phantom X2 Pro considering other brands deliver refined software with a better feature-set and timely updates. Countries like India and Saudi Arabia have a varied selection of devices from leading manufacturers, but in other markets — African and South American countries — there's significantly less choice, and the Phantom X2 Pro is likely to do better in those regions.

As it stands, the Phantom X2 Pro has a lot of hardware potential thanks to the vibrant screen, MediaTek Dimensity 9000 platform, 50MP camera, and large 5160mAh battery. But the software needs an overhaul if Tecno wants to play in the big leagues.

Tecno Android

Pinpointing exact retail prices for the Tecno Phantom X2 family has proven to be challenging. The vanilla Phantom X2 will retail for around $700 in Saudi Arabia. We can only assume that the global pricing will be a bit less and base our recommendation for alternative devices on that.

Tecno Phantom X2 review

Over in camp Samsung, there is the ever-popular Galaxy A53 5G. It is very reasonably priced, currently going for just under EUR 350. For that, you get an IP67-rated phone with a 6.5-inch, 120Hz Super AMOLED display, stereo speakers, a big 5,000 mAh battery and a potent quad-camera setup on the back.

If you are willing to stretch your budget a bit more, why not go for the Galaxy S21 FE 5G instead. That gets you IP68 ingress protection, an HDR10+ display, a more powerful chipset and a more potent camera setup with a telephoto. It has a slightly smaller 4,500 mAh battery, though.

Samsung Galaxy A53 5G

The Xiaomi 12T is another great choice. Some of its highlight features include a 6.67-inch, 12-bit, 120Hz, HDR10+ AMOLED display, stereo speakers, a powerful Dimensity 8100 chipset, a large 5,000 mAh battery and a versatile triple camera setup with a 108MP main snapper.

As a cheaper alternative, you can also look at the Xiaomi Poco F4 . It has IP53 ingress protection and stereo speakers, and you won't be giving up too much in either the chipset or the camera department. You will have to settle for a slightly smaller 4,500 mAh battery, though.

For the clean Android fans out there, the OnePlus 10T might fit the budget just right. It is a proper flagship phone with all of the trimmings like a 6.7-inch, 10-bit, HDR10+, 120Hz AMOLED display, Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, stereo speakers, 150W charging for its 4,800 mAh battery and a 50MP main snapper with OIS.

Tecno Phantom X2 review

If you want to save a few bucks, the OnePlus Nord 2T is also a solid choice. It has an HDR10+, 90Hz AMOLED display, stereo speakers, Dimensity 1300 chipset and a potent triple camera setup with a 50MP, OIS-enabled main snapper.

Our verdict

Tecno decided to rather boldly branch out into flagship territory with the Phantom X2 family. The Phantom X2 Pro even has a head-turning spotlight feature in its pop-out portrait telephoto camera. The vanilla model isn't far behind, though. If there is one thing Tecno deserves praise for, it has to be the minimal segmentation between the two models. The regular Phantom X2 is essentially identical to its Pro sibling, sans the spotlight portrait camera we just mentioned and a few other changes to the camera setup.

Tecno Phantom X2 review

On paper, the Phantom X2 looks like a solid phone in more ways than one. It has a large, 120Hz, curved OLED display, a big battery with fast charging and a powerful Dimensity 9000 chipset. HiOS 12 has also come a long way and is more fluent and less bloated than ever on the Phantom X2 pair.

The question of whether or not the Phantom X2 lives up to expectations is a more complicated one. Once we looked past the marketing materials and dug deeper into the phone, some nasty cracks started to show. For instance, the single bottom-firing speaker setup is hard to accept on a flagship device. So is the lack of HDR video support and the improved, though still not really impressive, display max brightness. Then again, hot on the heels of the Phantom X2 Pro review, we can see that Tecno is trying hard to improve its newest devices with updates rolling in to address some of the issues as best as possible through software. We can't, however, say whether this elevated attention to software support will be carried into the future for the Phantom X2 pair. Tecno doesn't exactly have the best track record in this regard.

Tecno Phantom X2 review

All things considered, in the current highly competitive and well-saturated market, we see the Tecno Phantom X2 as a bit of a gamble. In isolation, it manages to stand its ground. However, its competitors tend to offer more for the money and more well-rounded devices overall. On the right market and with aggressive pricing, the Phantom X2 can still stand a chance. We're just not sure Tecno currently has the standing to make and position a flagship product quite right for it to succeed.

  • Memorable, eye-catching design and excellent build quality.
  • 120Hz screen allows for high-framerate gaming.
  • The Dimensity 9000 chip offers great performance and modern features.
  • Solid all-around camera performance.
  • Solid battery life.
  • Display gets brighter than Phantom X2 Pro, but is still not great outdoors. Poor color accuracy, too.
  • Top-heavy and not easy to hold.
  • Single, underwhelming speaker.

Phantom X2 Series To Get Android 13 Early Next Year

Phantom X2 Series

TECNO has officially launched their premium devices – the Phantom X2 series which is their flagship smartphone for this year and includes the vanilla Phantom X2 and the Phantom X2 Pro .

They’re both incredible devices checking from the features and specs they carry.

The Phantom X2 series share most features. They come powered by Dimensity 9000 5G(4nm) chipset and Mali G710 MC10 GPU paired with 8GB RAM and 12GB for the regular and Pro version respectively. HiOS adds  5GB of virtual RAM.

Both the regular and Pro have 256GB of UFS 3.1 onboard storage.

The Phantom X2 series has a 5160mAh battery with support for 45W fast charging.

The Phantom X2 series has a slightly curved 6.8″ Super AMOLED display(1080 x 2400 pixels) rocking a 120Hz refresh rate in a 20:9 aspect ratio. Gorilla Glass Victus is present for protection. The display features P3 wide colour gamut.

The Phantom X2 series rock a 32MP selfie camera and a triple camera setup.

Phantom X2 Cameras:

  • 13MP ultrawide

Phantom X2 Pro Cameras

  • 50MP portrait

Video recording by the main cameras is capped at 4K 60fps for both too while selfie videos are limited to 1080p 60fps.

For software, they both come with Android 12 and HiOS 12 straight out of the box. It’s a bit disappointing as Android 13 has been out since its release in August this year.

The tech company promised that the Phantom X2 series will get the Android 13 upgrade around the second or third quarter of next year.

It’s still a long way to wait especially for a device going for over 100K. The flagships it’s competing with this year have already gotten the upgrade and next year’s flagships will come with Android 13 baked inside already.

The flagship market is a tight segment with rivals from Xiaomi, Samsung, Realme and OPPO nailing both software and hardware aspects.

Android 13 is brings with it  new features  including:

  • New  Material You  colour schemes and new  cinematic wallpapers .
  • Opt-in notifications .
  • QR code scanner  in the quick settings toggle
  • Android 13 will  warn you of crooked apps  that cause background battery drain.
  • UWB(Ultra-wideband) support  is coming to Android 13
  • Full support for Bluetooth Low Energy(LE) audio
  • A  new look for the output picker and media player .
  • The option to  make the lock screen clock more subtle
  • Improved clipboard management
  • Predictive back gestures
  • 7-day view  on the Privacy Dashboard

TECNO needs to improve its software update timeline if its to go against rivals in the premium smartphone market.

Home » TEST DRIVE: 2023 Rolls-Royce Phantom Series II—Forget the Chauffeur

It only takes driving about three and a half feet to realize that the Rolls-Royce Phantom is unlike every other car in existence. I’ve driven plenty of Rollers before but never a Phantom. And after barely a yard’s worth of driving I said out loud “Oh, I get it.” The Phantom is a completely unique experience, one that might not be for everybody, but it’s one that everyone should experience at least once in their life.

Phantom Series II

phantom x series 2

For 2023, Rolls-Royce updated the Phantom but Rolls doesn’t use BMW-speak, so it isn’t called an LCI. Instead, it’s the Phantom Series II. Some of the updates from Series I to Series II include an illuminated Pantheon grille, new headlight bezels with laser-cut starlight patterns, and an updated art gallery dashboard.

In pictures, the Phantom isn’t an especially pretty car but, in person, it’s striking like nothing else on the road. There’s something about its sheer size and imposing proportions that immediately let you know it’s not like other cars. Everything about it, from the design, to the paint quality, to the materials, and even the way it sits on its wheels feels like it’s another league entirely from everything else.

The car I drove was especially stunning. Its breathtaking metallic green paint combined with black disc wheels was just the perfect spec. It looked elegant but also badass in a way that only a Rolls-Royce can.

Like Nothing Else in the World

phantom x series 2

Once I set off, though, I realized that, despite its imposing looks and absurd levels of luxury, the Rolls-Royce Phantom isn’t a snobby car. The common trope is that Phantom owners don’t drive their cars, they have chauffeurs for that. However, the driver isn’t the chauffeur, the Phantom is. Even as the driver, the Phantom coddles you, it wraps you in warmth and comfort, turning the chore of driving into a luxurious pleasure. There’s an old expression among us automotive scribes, that good luxury cars make you feel more refreshed at the end of a long drive than you were when you started. That’s only actually true of one car—the Rolls-Royce Phantom.

phantom x series 2

I drove the Phantom up the same canyon road that I drove everything else on in Palm Springs. Prior to the Phantom drive, I tested the BMW X1 , the X7 M60i, the 330e, and the 760i . In all of those cars, even the 760i, that mountain felt like work. Fun, often heart pounding work, but work nevertheless. In the Phantom, it felt so easy and effortless that it was like taking a break.

It’s genuinely hard to describe how smooth and supple the Phantom is over any sort of pavement. The only way I can accurately describe it is that it deletes bumps. You can see a bump in the road, watch the long, bow-like front end of the Phantom go over it, and it’s gone. It takes a bit for your brain to recalibrate because you’re expecting to feel the bump. But you don’t. Like it never existed in the first place.

Fun in an Odd Way

phantom x series 2

The Rolls-Royce Phantom isn’t exactly fun to drive, in a traditional sense. Its steering ratio is incredibly slow, so it takes quite a bit of steering input to make things happen. But that’s by design. Twitchy steering inputs would be uncouth, especially for a chauffeur. So Rolls wants its driver to be deliberate and almost request some steering from the car. However, once you get into a groove, it’s actually shockingly accurate and easy to place.

Don’t think that because the Phantom is pillow soft that it’s a sloppy mess when you turn the steering wheel, though. It’s quite the opposite. Rolls’ air suspension keeps body movements in check, even when you’re driving in a manner that would upset the dignitary in the back. It also has rear-wheel steering, which makes it surprisingly nimble, despite being as long as a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier and as heavy as one too.

So despite its slow steering and plush ride, you can get into a rhythm with the Phantom on a twisty road and it actually becomes rather fun. All the while, you’re insulated from any sort of outside noise, your hands and butt are free from bumps and vibration, and you’re ensconced in leather, wood, and metal. It’s fun but without any of the work of driving a sportier car.

Internal Combustion Turned Invisible

phantom x series 2

Powering the Rolls-Royce Phantom is a 6.75-liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine and I honestly don’t care how much power it makes because it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter because the engine completely disappears once you start moving. I’ll admit it sounds kinda good on startup, from outside the car, but once you’re inside, there’s no physical or audible proof of its existence. Just effortless, buttery-smooth waves of instant torque. Almost like an electric car, just with more dead polar bears.

Thinking about it now, though, the Rolls-Royce Phantom should be electric. The next one will be and that’s good. After driving the Phantom I can say that its magnificently smooth engine is its only real weak spot. Not that it’s bad—it’s a brilliant piece of engineering—it just blends into the background and you never notice it. So why not have an electric motor that’s even quieter and has more torque?

Stunning Interior

phantom x series 2

Slipping into the Phantom is special. Every surface, every switch, every touchpoint is made from the highest quality materials and built to an a unbelievable standard. My car’s interior spec wasn’t anything special by Rolls’ standard, especially when compared to the breathtaking green paint and black wheels, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t gorgoues. It’s still nicer than every other car’s on the road, especially in terms of build quality. The wood work is incredible, the metal work feels durable and premium, and all of the tech—including BMW’s latest drive—remains hidden until you ask for it.

phantom x series 2

Not only is the Phantom easy on the body, regardless of road, but it’s also easy on the mind. Screens can be hidden away, the gauges are a mix between old-school analog gauges, and even the cabin clock is analog. If you don’t want modern distractions, you don’t need to have them.

Drive the new 7 Series and it’s practically shouting at you the whole time. It’s a great luxury car but there’s so much tech and so many lights that it can almost be blinding. In the Phantom, there are no such distractions. Only pure, simple, old-school luxury.

Owners Should Drive Their Phantoms

phantom x series 2

I spent about an hour in the Rolls-Royce Phantom II and I didn’t want the journey to end. I know that most Phantom owners will have drivers to take them to and fro. However, I highly recommend you ditch your driver and do it yourself. The Phantom offers a unique driving experience that can’t be found in any other car and you’ll never experience that from the back seat. Forget the chauffeur, get out and drive your Phantom.
