Let in the Sun, Not the Rain: 21 Cars with Big Panoramic Roofs

Glass tops have invaded every vehicle type and segment, so you no longer need to head to the the top of the market to get a light, airy cabin.

Headshot of Graham Kozak

Once the province of luxury cars, the panoramic glass roof has proliferated across all vehicle styles and price ranges. Yes, even vans. We get the logic: In the right car, a sunroof or moonroof is good. But bigger is always better … so what if we just made the whole dang roof out of glass? The panoramic roof is the result. Some are fixed; some slide to open wide. Some are more panoramic than others. All of them let extra natural light into the cabin, giving it an airy, open feel.

There are some downsides here, especially if you’re looking for a lightweight, sporty ride: These vast expanses of glass tend to add weight, complexity and cost. Then again, so does a traditional convertible roof. But a glass roof lets in light even when it's drizzling, and it offers a quieter ride than a typical ragtop.

Here’s a slice of today’s models offering panoramic glass roofs—including a few unlikely choices.

Ford Transit Connect

ford transit connect wagon profile

The Ford Transit Connect is designed to be versatile, with work/cargo and passenger options available (and a long list of options for each). The passenger version, the Transit Connect Wagon, can seat up to seven depending on what boxes you check. And for $995, you can add a fixed panoramic glass roof to make the cabin feel a little more open for everyone inside.

Subaru Forester

Subaru built its reputation on the back of its utilitarian, rugged and often spartan vehicles. Offerings like the new Forester are still utilitarian but they're no longer spartan—or at least they don't have to be. The Forester's available panoramic moonroof isn't as big as some others here (doesn't every Subie buyer stick a bike or kayak-rack on the roof anyway?) but it's larger than the sunroofs of yore.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe

Big glass tops are widely available on the Mercedes-Benz range, and they're standard-issue on the the E-Class Coupe . Viewed from the outside, the panoramic roof blends in more or less seamlessly with the windshield, forming what appears to be an uninterrupted expanse of glass.

Lincoln Navigator

Lincoln isn't shy about offering vast expanses of glass on the roofs of its luxury vehicles, and that includes the big, cushy Navigator SUV . The available Vista Roof even opens up to let the air in. Sorry, third-row passengers: It's above the first and second rows only.

Read our Lincoln Navigator review

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

Mitsubishi isn't necessarily trying to appeal to enthusiasts with its Eclipse Cross (in recycling the name of a tuner favorite for a crossover, you could argue it's doing the opposite). Rather, it's aiming for value-conscious buyers by offering a long list of features—including a panoramic roof—at a competitive price.

The Ram 1500 is at the forefront of the luxury pickup craze. It already has one of the roomiest cabins of any vehicle on the market, period. Why not throw a big panoramic sunroof into the mix? Why not, indeed? If you're willing to pay luxury sedan-money for a work truck, anything is possible.

Rolls-Royce Cullinan

You've got to feel a little sorry for anyone building out their Rolls-Royce Cullinan . Do they select the panoramic sunroof option to see the real sky, or choose the starlight headliner, which lets you see a simulation of the celestial dome at a moment's notice? These are the sorts of decisions that keep you up at night.

Tesla Model 3

The Tesla Model 3 is the EV-maker's entry-level offering, but it gets an expansive glass roof as a standard feature. In fact, it's the only way to get the car.

Read our Tesla Model 3 review

The new Audi Q8 is positioned as the brand's SUV flagship, and that means it gets all of the brand's latest goodies plus luxury touches like frameless door windows and, yep, a big glass roof. Fortunately, it avoids most of the quirks of today's crop of strange crossover-coupes—think of it as more of a tall wagon, and the Q8 makes more sense.

Chrysler Pacifica

Chrysler gave America the modern minivan, and it's keeping the flame alive with the excellent Pacifica . There's even a new, luxurious Pinnacle trim (the entry-level variant wears the Voyager model name). What can we say? We really like this thing in all of its forms and would even if you couldn't get it with a glass top.

Jaguar I-Pace

The Jaguar I-Pace is the marque's first foray into electric vehicles and—a little surprisingly, perhaps—one of the first EVs on the market from an established automaker. It also has one of the bigger panoramic sunroofs out there, stretching basically the entire length of the cabin.

Jeep Grand Cherokee

Part of the appeal of the Jeep Wrangler is that you can take the roof off. The Grand Cherokee isn't a convertible, but the available sliding glass top brings you a little closer to the wilderness if you venture off the beaten path. The Grand Cherokee can be configured to meet a number of needs, from the track to the trail; this feature is offered on the more luxury-oriented trims.

BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe

If you're an old-school Roundel-head, the BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe is going to take some getting used to: It's based on a front-wheel-drive platform shared with Mini. Like many entry-level luxury vehicles, the base model is, well, fairly basic; if you're willing to spend more, you load it up with options. The panoramic sunroof is one of them.

Porsche Taycan

The fixed glass top for the Porsche Taycan , the brand's first EV, will eventually be an option for American buyers. For now, however, it's the only roof offered in this market. Hope all you early adopters like a little extra sunlight in the cabin!

Bentley Flying Spur

If we had to pick our favorite thing about the Bentley Flying Spur —heck, if we had to pick our top five favorite things about the big sedan—the panoramic glass roof probably wouldn't make the list. That's not to say it isn't a nice feature; we're just usually too distracted by the acres of fine upholstery, or the W12 engine, to take much notice of it.

Range Rover Sport

Land Rover's Range Rover line can be loaded up with nearly every luxury feature imaginable (and with a commensurately high price tag), and yes, that includes a vast expanse of rooftop glass. But that doesn't mean they can't hold their own where the pavement ends; even the Range Rover Sport packs a lot of off-road capability.

We could have picked just about any modern Volvo offering here as they all tend to offer a panoramic option, but we especially like the handsome V60 wagon ; there's something about the long-roof form factor that meshes well with the feature.

Cadillac CT5

You can take a few paths when building out Cadillac's CT5 sedan, the two main ones being luxury and V performance. If you opt for the former, and choose the platinum package, you'll get a dual-pane sunroof setup as part of the deal.

Honda Pilot

Get the Honda Pilot with the loaded Elite trim, and you'll get a large sunroof as part of the deal. It's a first for Honda—and probably a helpful distraction if you're carrying a couple of kids cross-country on a road trip.

Everything you need to know about the new Rolls-Royce Phantom

The eight generation of the iconic luxury saloon, what’s new with phantom viii.

Words: Jonathan Wells

We’ve been waiting over a decade for the newest iteration of Rolls-Royce’s iconic saloon and finally, late last week, the Phantom was unveiled – via a live stream, just to show that the heritage carmaker are keeping up with the times.

But even under the bonnet and inside the cabin, this nod to the future and progressive technology is fully embraced. With everything from a head-up display to laser headlights, this is a car that means business. In fact, there are so many secrets and features hidden away within the ghostly design of this latest Phantom that it’s hard to keep track. However, we think we’ve covered everything, so read on.

rolls royce phantom panoramic roof

As will most luxury saloons, the focus here is on comfort. An ‘all-new’ – which seems to be Rolls-Royce’s buzzword for this latest release – all-aluminium space frame architecture is both lighter and stiffer than the previous iteration, by 30 per cent, no less. As a result, this leads to a whole new level of comfort, and what the carmaker calls its ‘Magic Carpet Ride’.

rolls royce phantom panoramic roof

Outside, the pantheon grille remains the heart of the design, but has been tweaked slightly and, unlike all previous models, sees the grille itself integrated into the surrounding bodywork. As a result, the car looks cleaner and sleeker – with all lines flowing to this iconic central design feature.

At the back, we see a more raked design, and a subtle scallop on the rear roof. There is a tapered tail on this latest model, also, which again affords the Phantom smoother lines. Cleverly, the boot lid finisher in stainless steel also evokes the grille at the front, giving the whole car more of a unified feel.

rolls royce phantom panoramic roof

This Phantom, as a whole, has a much more futuristic feel than the older models. Rolls-Royce claim this is for the driver’s clarity behind the wheel, but we suspect they’re not too upset about the chic aesthetic perks that come hand-in-hand with refining design.

rolls royce phantom panoramic roof

12.3 inch TFT displays with LED backlighting now communicate all driver information from within chrome surrounds, a bespoke analogue clock sits pride of place in the dash, and a four-camera system with Panoramic View. And it doesn’t end there.

If you’re lucky enough to get behind the wheel of this machine, you’ll also enjoy wireless Apple CarPlay integration, night vision, a WiFi hotspot for up to ten devices, and an uninterrupted swathe of toughened glass that runs the length of the dashboard and can be used to display art.

The eighth Phantom boasts an ‘all-new’ 6.75 litre, twin-turbo V12, which delivers 563 horsepower and will take you from 0-60mph in 5.3 seconds. And, as this is kept smooth using Rolls-Royce’s latest generation of self-levelling air suspension – which makes millions of calculations every second – it’s both swift and smooth.

And, finally, the satellite-aided transmission deserves a mention, if not simply for its sheer ingenuity. With technology that originated in BMWs, this nifty piece of kit pre-selects gears based both on the general behaviour of the driver, but also on your geographical location to make your ride smoother.

Select a year

  • Lows Gas-guzzling V-12 engine, it costs half a million dollars, that hefty price doesn't even include a chauffeur.
  • Verdict The Phantom is a car so expensive that even some 1 percenters can't afford one. How's that for exclusive?

What's New for 2022?

Rolls-Royce's flagship Phantom sedan glides into 2022 with few changes, but a new option called the Privacy Suite is now available. This feature adds an electrochromic-glass divider between the front and rear seats as well as an intercom that allows for communication with the driver. A duo of 12.0-inch monitors mounted ahead of the rear passengers can be set up to mirror laptops or other smart devices, and a set of curtains provides additional privacy from those outside.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2022 Rolls-Royce Phantom starts at $457,750 and goes up to $537,500 depending on the trim and options.

One does not simply choose a Phantom—or any Rolls-Royce for that matter—off the dealer lot. No. These cars are built to the exacting requirements of the millionaires and billionaires who can afford them; these carriages of the rich are often customized down to the last detail. We won't even begin to suggest which special-order options are worth adding because, well, how would we know? We would, however, suggest springing for the Extended Wheelbase model to take advantage of its limousine-like rear-seat legroom. As they say, go big or go home.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Prodigious power is provided by a silken 563-hp twin-turbo V-12 paired with an eight-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive. Acceleration is brisk, but Rolls-Royce's claimed 5.1-second zero-to-60-mph time isn't anything you'd appreciate your chauffer trying to replicate. The Phantom is better suited for wafting along with delicate inputs to throttle and steering. To say that the ride is smooth would be an understatement—imagine being carried along on a fluffy cloud. The Phantom practically levitates over the road; it features a pothole-spotting camera that helps the suspension adapt to road imperfections in real time. It's a library-quiet, sensory-deprivation cocoon that makes you feel like part of the royal family.

2022 rollsroyce phantom rear exterior

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

A Phantom owner's conspicuous consumption is matched by the car's penchant for consuming fuel. The EPA's fuel-economy estimates run as low as 12-mpg city, although the Phantom's 20-mpg highway rating actually bests the smaller Rolls-Royce Ghost's by 2 mpg. If we ever are lucky enough to have a chance to put the Phantom through our 200-mile highway fuel-economy test, we'll update this story with test results. For more information about the Phantom's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website .

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

An interior tailored for royals can get its own custom-artwork dash. Acres of wood, real metal accents, and vast expanses of supple leather cover the cabin. Rolls-Royce offers both a standard- and long-wheelbase version of the Phantom, the latter stretched by 8.6 inches, much of which results as additional rear-seat legroom. Rear-hinged coach doors open to allow graceful and dramatic arrivals and departures. Rear-seat passengers can be treated to myriad luxuries such as deep-pile carpeted floor mats, power-adjustable seats with massage, a refrigerated console compartment, and remote controls for the infotainment system.

2022 rollsroyce phantom interior

Infotainment and Connectivity

Speaking of infotainment, the Phantom comes standard with a large infotainment display artfully hidden behind a glass panel that stretches the full width of the dashboard. It's controlled via a rotary knob on the center console. Lest you think that rear-seat passengers are left out of the technology game, the Phantom also features touchscreens that motor down from each of the front seatbacks to provide access to the car's audio and navigation systems, as well as a live-TV tuner so passengers won't fall behind on their favorite shows while on the go.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The Phantom's dizzying array of optional tech includes night vision and a distinct laser-light system, but Rolls-Royce also offers more conventional driver-assistance features such as forward-collision and lane-departure warnings as standard. For more information about the Phantom's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS ) websites. Key safety features include:

  • Standard forward-collision warning
  • Standard lane-departure warning
  • Available adaptive cruise control with night vision

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Like the Cullinan SUV and the Dawn convertible , the Phantom comes with Rolls-Royce's four-year/unlimited-mile warranty and maintenance package as standard.

  • Limited warranty covers 4 years or unlimited miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers 4 years or unlimited miles
  • Complimentary maintenance is covered for 4 years or unlimited miles

We receive many requests for sponsorship, funding and donations, and whilst we are a keen supporter of local charities sadly we cannot support every worthy cause which is brought to our attention. Home-Start Arun promotes the welfare of families in the Arun, Worthing and Adur District Council areas, to alleviate stress and conflict at home and prevent family crisis and breakdown.

This $13 Million Rolls-Royce Took Four Years to Build

If you happen to own a McLaren F1 GTR, a Ferrari F12tdf and numerous other cars, planes and yachts, you might as well commission Rolls-Royce to go more bespoke than ever before.

Headshot of Máté Petrány

The inspiration came from the cars of the "golden era," otherwise known as the short period when Europe wasn't at war in the first half of the 20th century:

The client’s desire was for a coachbuilt two seater coupé featuring a large panoramic glass roof. He was inspired by many of his favorite cars from the marque’s golden era of the early 20th Century, as well as many classic and modern yachts.
The grandeur, scale, flamboyance and drama of the 1925 Phantom I Round Door built by Jonckheere; the svelte tapering glasshouse, dramatic dash to axle proportion and up-sweep of the rear departure angle of the 1934 Phantom II Streamline Saloon by Park Ward; the elegantly falling waist-rail, swept tail coachwork of the 1934 Gurney Nutting Phantom II Two Door Light Saloon, and the flowing roofline, rising departure angle, and again the swept tail coachwork of the 1934 Park Ward 20/25 Limousine Coupé were all considered by today’s Rolls-Royce designers in the creation of this very distinctive motor car.

Land vehicle, Vehicle, Luxury vehicle, Car, Automotive design, Sedan, Rolls-royce phantom, Rolls-royce, Transport, Supercar,

Starting at the front, the Sweptail's grille is larger than any car's of the modern era, milled from solid aluminum before hand-polished to a mirror finish. The registration number certainly won't change on this one, while the crystal Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament was lifted straight off Rolls-Royce's 103EX future concept.

Motor vehicle, Automotive design, Automotive exterior, Transport, Grille, Automotive lighting, Hood, Car, Headlamp, Automotive tire,

From the side, to keep the lines as clean as a sleek yacht, Rolls-Royce managed to wrap the bodywork under the car with no visible boundary to the surfaces, preparing your eyes for the main attraction that is of course the Coupé's swept-tail back.

The Sweptail's single-piece panoramic roof is one of the largest and most complex pieces of glass ever put on a car. Framed by polished aluminum rails, it allows you to look at "generous quantities of polished Macassar Ebony and open-pore Paldao" inside the cabin. Like, a small exotic forest's worth:

Vehicle, Car, Luxury vehicle, Automotive design, Personal luxury car, Automotive exterior, Design, Auto part, Family car, Steering wheel,

Having a fancy mid-shelf with an illuminated glass lip as well as a massive hat shelf inset with luggage rails means no rear seats, but to make the Sweptail as practical as the world's most expensive intercontinental tourer should be, Rolls-Royce integrated a pair of carbon fiber panniers behind the opening of the coach doors, capable of hiding a laptop on each side. Luggage space in the trunk remains more than adequate, not unlike the 6.75-liter V12's power delivery.

The $13 Million RR Sweptback: Rolls-Royce heard that Bentley offers many bespoke options, and thought that was cute.

Elite Sedans: Here’s How The Rolls-Royce Phantom Compares With The Maybach S-Class

Let's see how the two kingpins of luxury and class compare to one another.

There aren’t many cars that can be categorized with the likes of the Rolls-Royce Phantom and the Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-class. These vehicles offer an ultra-luxury feel alongside a powerful yet subtle driving experience.

The Rolls-Royce Phantom is a house-on-wheels with half a million-dollar price tag. But somehow, it's worth it. With second to none premium finishes and royal designs, the Phantom makes up for its cost.

The Maybach S-Class, coming in with almost a third of the Phantom’s price, provides excellent power coupled with exquisite style. It may not be as flashy as a Phantom, but it definitely has what it takes to be the best of the best. Without further ado, let’s see how these two elite vehicles match up.

RELATED: Everything You Need To Know About The Rolls-Royce Ghost Black Badge

Rolls-Royce Phantom’s Performance: A Once In A Lifetime Experience

The smooth 563 HP twin-turbo V12 engine is coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive to deliver an incredible performance. Although the car accelerates quickly, Rolls-Royce's stated 5.1-second 0-60 MPH time isn't something you'd want to strive to match.

The Phantom is best designed for cruising at a gentle pace with sensitive throttle and steering movements. For the sake of comparison, consider being carried around by a puffy cloud. The Phantom's suspension adjusts to road irregularities in real-time thanks to a pothole-spotting camera. If you've ever wanted to feel like you're a member of the royal family, here is the place.

Maybach S-Class Offers A Silky Smooth Ride

Every S580 sedan is equipped with a 496 HP twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine and a 48-volt hybrid powertrain. By choosing the S680, you'll get a 6.0-liter V12 engine with 621 HP. Mercedes' 4Matic all-wheel-drive technology will be standard on all variants. The new S560's V8 produces 33 extra horsepower than the 2020 model, and the road test suggests that it has a great deal of power.

There is no 48-volt hybrid system for the V12 model; therefore, it has the same power rating as the 2020 S650 model. The new S-class is equipped with air suspension and active sound cancellation technology as standard equipment to ensure a smooth and peaceful trip. The large sedan also comes equipped with rear-wheel steering, which should make driving through city streets easier.

What Gets More Luxurious Than A Rolls-Royce Interior?

There are many ways to personalize a royal-themed interior. The inside of the cabin is decked out with acres of wood, authentic metal accents, and velvety leather. In addition to a standard-wheelbase version of the Phantom, the company also sells a long-wheelbase model, with the latter being 8.6 inches longer overall, with the majority of the extra length resulting in more rear-seat legroom.

Entrances and departures are made more elegant and theatrical by the use of rear-hinged coach doors. There is a slew of luxurious amenities available for rear-seat passengers, including deep-pile carpeted floor mats, power-adjustable chairs with massage functions, a chilled console drawer, and remote controls for the multimedia system, to name a few.

The Phantom's standard infotainment display is a big one that spans the whole dashboard and is cleverly concealed behind a glass panel. A rotary dial on the center console controls it. The Phantom also boasts touchscreens that drag down from each of the front seat backs to allow accessibility to the car's music and GPS technologies, as well as a live-TV tuner, so occupants don't miss out on their beloved programs while traveling.

Maybach S-Class Interiors Are Pure Class

Due to its larger wheelbase than the Benz-branded S-Class sedan , which is already rather huge, the Maybach S-Class offers extra interior room for passengers to sprawl out in its leather-lined interior. Although we couldn't quite describe all the luxurious amenities that will come standard in the Maybach, we can say that all versions will have top-tier leather on practically every internal surface, a 64-color interior ambient lighting mechanism, warm and ventilated front seat with massage and four-position memory configurations, heated back seats with power settings and massage, an air ionizing mechanism with a distinctive aroma, and a panoramic sunroof.

Maybach offers an additional Executive Rear Seat Plus option that features foldable tables in the rear seats, an enlarged center console, more wood trim in the back seats, and temperature-controlled cup containers for those who want to be driven. Other optional features include Maybach-branded champagne glasses, electrically controlled rear doors, and a fridge.

Mercedes' newest MBUX infotainment system, shown on a 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen, is standard equipment in the Maybach, just as it is in the S-class. Additionally, all versions have a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and an embedded reality navigation technology that provides clear video instructions on the infotainment screen as well as the head-up display in the vehicle. All models are equipped with standard amenities such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with a wireless connection, six USB-C ports, a 30-speaker Burmester sound system, a wireless cellphone charging pad, and a back-seat multimedia system.

Fuel Consumption: Maybach For The Win

According to the EPA, the S580 is estimated to have a fuel economy of 16 MPG in the city and 24 MPG on the highway. The S680's fuel efficiency has not been disclosed.

The Phantom's propensity to consume gasoline is matched by its owner's ostentatious spending. The EPA estimates Phantom's fuel efficiency as low as 12 MPG in the city, and even though the Phantom's highway rating is 20 MPG, it actually outperforms the smaller Rolls-Royce Ghost by two MPG.

The Maybach offers more engine options you can choose from, and the Phantom has a flashier and more elegant look to it. Considering that the price might not be a dealbreaker for you, you can select based on what you are looking for.

Rolls-Royce price

How much does a rolls-royce cost.

The extravagant Rolls-Royce car prices dwarf nearly anything else on the market, showcasing the opulent no-holds-barred approach deeply embedded into every model. The estimated starting price for the Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV is the lowest at $355,000, before options.

The Rolls-Royce Ghost is the brand’s so-called entry-level model, yet is still the epitome of grandeur and wealth, coming in with a reported Rolls-Royce starting price of $400,000. The flagship Rolls-Royce Phantom price starts at an estimated $465,000.

Yet these prices are far from the whole story.

Nearly every model is custom-tailored to the buyer’s demands. A single option can cost more than most new vehicles found in dealerships across the world. The final prices, while mainly a closely-held secret, can reach $100,000 or more than the starting price.

What is the most expensive Rolls-Royce?

If you want to buy the most expensive new Rolls-Royce for sale, there’s practically no limit to the amount of money you can spend. The Phantom’s $465,000 estimated starting price quickly ramps up to $540,000 for the extended version, essentially a Rolls-Royce limousine.

The Rolls-Royce Boat Tail price was the most expensive Rolls-Royce ever sold. This three-unit offering of artfully hand-crafted two-door models had an astonishing estimated price of $28 million. The sleek Rolls-Royce convertible fuses yacht design points into a timeless look.

Another expensive Rolls-Royce is the Sweptail, a truly bespoke model with just one in the world. It features an expansive panoramic sunroof that beautifully tapers toward the rear end, and sold for an estimated $13 million.

How much is the cheapest Rolls-Royce?

The Rolls-Royce is the lowest-priced sedan, with an estimated starting price of $400,000. Those looking for the absolute cheapest new model available today can turn to the Rolls-Royce Cullinan price, with a reported starting point of $355,000.

Keep your eyes peeled for the first electric Rolls-Royce coupe. Most reports indicate the stunning two-door Rolls-Royce Spectre will have an estimated starting price of $400,000.

About Rolls-Royce

History of rolls-royce.

Around the turn of the 20th century, Charles Rolls was an early adopter of automobiles and was behind the first motor vehicle dealership in Britain. During this time, Henry Royce created innovative engineering feats, including dynamos and electric cranes, before turning his attention to redesigning two-cylinder engines and producing a small handful of cars.

In 1904, the two British forces collided and created the first ever Rolls-Royce automobile using Royce’s two-cylinder design and Rolls’ financial backing and business acumen, formalizing the agreement two years later.

One of the first models started as the 40/50 but eventually took the name Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost. It solidified the brand’s reputation as meticulous, creating powerful and luxurious vehicles that are built to last.

Sadly, Rolls passed away in an aviation accident in 1910. While Royce encountered serious health ailments of his own by 1911, he persevered and continued with limited involvement in the company as it grew.

When World War I and II swept across the globe, the advanced automaker turned to create aviation engines. It quickly became one of the world’s most respected aero-engine producers, which continues today under the separate entity Rolls-Royce Holdings.

Opulent automobile construction continued as well. The 1949 Rolls-Royce Dawn Drophead is one of the best classic cars . And the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud was the flagship model from 1955 to 1966, with a gorgeous elongated hood and prominent front end draped in luxury from front to back.

The Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow took over after that, holding on strong until 1980, becoming the luxury brand’s top vehicle by volume produced at an impressive 30,057 units total. During this time, the Rolls-Royce Corniche also hit the market, becoming another long-lasting model that ushered in dramatic improvements.

In 1998, the automotive division was bought by Volkswagen and separated from the Rolls-Royce Limited aero-engines. Then in 2003, BMW took ownership of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Limited as a wholly-owned subsidiary.

Who owns Rolls-Royce Motor Cars today? BMW has retained ownership, but the luxury brand operated as a separate entity with headquarters in Goodwood, West Sussex, England.

Understanding the Rolls-Royce car range

Most Rolls-Royce cars have one-word model names, often based on spiritual entities. The first use of Phantom in a model name stretches back to 1925 and is still the ultra-luxurious brand’s flagship offering.

Other models, such as the Wraith and Ghost continue this spiritual naming methodology, as does the first-ever electric Rolls-Royce model, the upcoming Spectre.

A model that defies this convention, like it also defies the typical Rolls-Royce car body style, is the SUV Rolls-Royce Cullinan. It takes its name from the largest diamond ever discovered.

Many models, including the current Phantom and Ghost, are available with extended wheelbase variants to provide an opulent rear-row experience focused on a chauffeured experience.

Black Badge variants incorporate many darkened elements, including a blacked-out grille instead of the iconic polished metal, and often incorporate performance enhancements too, although the brand is never focused on creating the fastest car in the world .

While nearly every Rolls-Royce that rolls off the line comes with individualized specifications custom-tailored to a buyer’s every whim, the automaker has recently rolled out another level of red-carpet luxury through its Coachbuild division, producing some of the rarest and most grandiose Rolls around.

Interesting facts about Rolls-Royce

When Rolls-Royce vehicle production separated from its aero-engine division, Volkswagen Group was the high bidden that was to take over production. Yet there was one serious glitch in the plans. Due to its existing relationship as an auto engine supplier, BMW swept up exclusive rights to essential Rolls-Royce trademarks.

After coming to a limited agreement with BMW, Volkswagen built limited Rolls-Royce models from 1998 to 2003, before giving in to BMW’s dominating position.

Another interesting detail about Rolls-Royce vehicles is built into every wheel. Look closely and you’ll see that the Rolls-Royce logo is always upright, thanks to a specialized gyroscope tucked inside.

Where is Rolls-Royce made?

Every Rolls-Royce vehicle is made in Goodwood, England. The hand-built cars are produced in a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility that opened in 2003 as BMW took ownership.

Rolls-Royce electric cars

As car and motorcycle producers throughout the world turn toward electrification, the Rolls-Royce Spectre is poised to follow suit with a fully-electric platform bringing in a new generation.

The electric Rolls-Royce coupe Spectre is expected to have similar performance metrics as the whopping V-12 engines, and drivers might not even notice much of a difference since every Rolls-Royce features whisper-quiet performance.

The Spectre is expected to be the first of many Rolls-Royce electric vehicles. The company has reported it plans to produce exclusively electric vehicles by 2030.

Rolls-Royce models

Let’s go through the list of the current new Rolls-Royce models for sale, along with some of the recently-discontinued models and the icons from the past.

Rolls-Royce Cullinan

rolls royce brand rolls royce cullinan - Luxe Digital

Named after the largest diamond ever discovered, the Rolls-Royce Cullinan ramps up the size to push the Ranger Rover off the throne and deliver the first SUV from the opulent British automaker. Its grandiose amenities stand tall over the best luxury SUVs , putting this gem in a class of its own.

Drivers won’t even notice the size due to its four-wheel steering that improves low-speed maneuverability and high-speed stability. The Flagbearer system scans the road ahead to adjust the suspension to road conditions, providing an unparalleled experience that puts the effortless Lexus or Jaguar rides to shame.

The Cullinan is a battle-proven off-road monster too. Rolls-Royce paired with National Geographic to take the Cullinan 12,000 miles over three continents, conquering sand, snow, and everything in between.

Rolls-Royce Ghost

rolls royce brand rolls royce ghost - Luxe Digital

Batting in the same league as the Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-Class means you’re in the majors. So when people refer to the Rolls-Royce Ghost price as the brand’s entry-level model, it doesn’t do this impeccable vehicle any justice.

It comes with the classic Rolls-Royce coach doors, opening up the spacious interior with a touch of elegance. Every inch of this spiritual guide is adorned with premium materials, from supple leather to exotic wood inlays.

If the regular Ghost Rolls-Royce price leaves a little too much change rattling around your pocket, step up to the high-performance Rolls-Royce Ghost Black Badge variant and its nearly 600 horsepower, equal to about three Volvo cars combined.

Rolls-Royce Phantom

rolls royce brand rolls royce phantom - Luxe Digital

For cars like BMW and Audi , drivers have fun getting from A to B. But in the flagship Rolls-Royce Phantom, transportation is an elevated experience. It floats down the pavement on a cloud, encompassed by the finest amenities, and filled with a sense of wealth in every sense of the word.

For property developer Balwinder Sahni, the estimated $800,000 purchase price for his Phantom was just the beginning. He spent a reported $9.6 million to get one of the world’s most expensive license plates for it, adorned with D5, which relates to his lucky number 9.

With nearly a century of history behind the Phantom model name, you can be certain that you’re getting the very best from the most luxurious automaker that’s ever existed, easily surpassing the once gold-standard and still luxurious Cadillac models .

Rolls-Royce Spectre

rolls royce brand rolls royce spectre - Luxe Digital

As the competition for the best electric cars amps up, Rolls-Royce is stepping up to deliver the luxury brand’s first fully-electric offering. The two-door electric Rolls-Royce Spectre and its near-silent powertrain will be rolling across the bespoke production lines soon.

The starry headliner extends down to the door panels, complementing the flowing, picturesque dashboard. Most reports indicate two electric motors will dish out 577 horsepower, matching the internal combustion Rolls engine specifications.

Although the range is expected to be a little less than top EV competitors like Tesla Model S Plaid and the more value-focused Polestar , that’s not an issue for Rolls-Royce owners who would rather use a jet or helicopter for extended trips.

Rolls-Royce Boat Tail

rolls royce brand rolls royce boat tail - Luxe Digital

For the lucky few invited to create a bespoke model with the Rolls-Royce Coachbuild division, artisans bring out harmony between human and machine, fusing individual character into the entire development process.

Any model coming out of this process is special, but the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail is one of the most exclusive models to ever come out of the Goodwood production facility. Only three units exist, each uniquely crafted to owner specifications.

You might want to take a seat before finding out about the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail price. It holds the title as the world’s most expensive new car , with an astronomical $28 million estimated sticker price, surpassing the sky-high Bugatti price list .

The design nods to the past 1932 Boat Tail while incorporating J-Class yacht elements for an impressively sleek and dominating stance. Owners are issued two Bovet timepieces which can be worn as wristwatches or placed in the fascia as car clocks.

Rolls-Royce Sweptail

rolls royce brand rolls royce sweptail - Luxe Digital

Four years of love and labor went into the one-of-a-kind Rolls-Royce Sweptail, bringing out one of the most stunning designs the world has seen.

An uninterrupted panoramic glass sunroof stretches from windshield to rear bumper, tapering back into a sleek, timeless shape modeled after early 20th-century vehicles and yacht elements from past and present.

Designed and built for a Rolls-Royce connoisseur, the Sweptail was once the world’s most expensive vehicle, offered at an estimated $13 million.

Rolls-Royce Wraith

rolls royce brand rolls royce wraith - Luxe Digital

When the Phantom Coupe was laid to rest, the Rolls-Royce Wraith took the reins as the ultra-luxurious two-door model. Its sloping roofline is as gorgeous as you’d expect, and it’s one of the fastest Rolls-Royces on the roads, matching some of a Lamborghini model’s speed.

Built on the same platform as the Ghost, this model holds tight to the usual rear-opening doors and out-of-this-world customization, at least when it was rolling off production lines before 2021.

If your chauffeur will be behind the wheel, opt for the extended version’s Privacy Suite to transform the Rolls Royce Phantom interior rear cabin into a secluded sanctuary.

Most Wraith units came with the classic Rolls front grille, but the Black Badge variant adds a more subtle yet aggressive black grille along with increased performance. It’s a world away from zippy models from Porsche or Ferrari , but still a thrilling experience all around.

Rolls-Royce Dawn

rolls royce brand rolls royce dawn - Luxe Digital

Put the top down and feel the morning sun while being enveloped in the supple leather seats of the Rolls-Royce Dawn. Production of this incredible two-door luxury car is in the past, but it remains one of the brand’s most beautiful models.

A handful of specialized variants were produced, including 50 units of a Silver Bullet Dawn with design points from 1920s roadsters. An aftermarket version from German’s Mansory car modification firm lowered the ride height and amped-up performance.

There’s just no better way to let the wind rush through your hair as you effortlessly cruise down the road in one of the most luxurious cars in the world. It’s no car for kids , but it’ll let your inner joy out.

The 10 Best Things About the Rolls-Royce Cullinan

The 10 Best Things About the Rolls-Royce Cullinan

The Rolls Royce Cullinan is the most expensive SUV in the world and here are the 10 best things about it!

rolls royce phantom panoramic roof

#9 Panoramic Roof The panoramic roof or as Rolls-Royce call it, the ‘Panorama Glass Sunroof’; though it’s a standard option on most SUVs, on the Cullinan it opens a lot wider than we’ve seen before which makes it a fantastic feature. It goes a lot further back than most SUV’s panoramic roofs, with a lot of air coming into the cabin which gives the sensation of being in a convertible.

#7 Off-Road Button An off-road button in a Rolls-Royce? Well, the thought of having an off-road Rolls-Royce a few years ago was ludicrous and it’s debatable how many Cullinan owners are going to take them off-road. However, what we like about it is the simplicity of it. Just one button and Rolls-Royce will do the rest. This is the first Rolls-Royce to have a four-wheel drive system and the first time we have a Rolls-Royce you can take anywhere!

#5 V12 Engine It’s very rare to find a V12 engine in an SUV. The Cullinan’s rivals have got V8 engines including the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, Lamborghini Urus and the Range Rover 5.0 SVAutobiography Dynamic. The Bentayga comes with a W12 but the Cullinan is the only V12 SUV. It’s twin-turbo engine is the same power plant as in the Phantom and for a big car the Cullinan is extraordinarily fast. With 563 bhp, a top speed of 155 mph, the Cullinan accelerates from 0-62 mph in just 5.3 seconds. It’s not as fast as a Lamborghini Urus, but it’s how it delivers this power in such an effortless way. One thing’s for sure, if you have a V12 engine in your SUV, you know you’re the daddy!

#3 Ride Quality Number 3 on our list is the ride quality. The first thing you notice is the driving position, which is one of the main reasons you buy a Cullinan over a Phantom. You have a much higher driving position and it makes you feel much more commanding on the road. Following this you notice the quietness of the cabin. The Cullinan has 100 kg worth of sound deadening equipment, double thick glass, foam filled tyres so you can barely hear anything when you are driving. Thirdly, is that famous magic carpet ride of the air suspension on a Rolls-Royce which is so smooth and comfortable, it just glides across the road.

#1 Coach Doors Top of our list is the coach doors. The Cullinan is the only SUV in the world with coach doors. There are fantastically inviting and in the door, you get your customary Rolls-Royce umbrella. With the suicide rear doors, it’s incredibly easy to get in and out of the car. There’s a button placed on the C pillar to close the door which saves you the hassle of manually closing the suicide door.

10 Best Rolls-Royce Cars Ever Produced

Posted: January 13, 2023 | Last updated: November 1, 2023

Businessman Charles Rolls and engineer Henry Royce founded Rolls-Royce at the beginning of the 20th century , and the company swiftly earned a reputation for excellence in engineering and production both in Britain and overseas. Since it was founded, Rolls-Royce has produced high-caliber vehicles that command attention. Rolls-Royce is one of the ultimate status symbols because so few other automakers can make that claim. Rarely do we encounter an organization this ancient that not only instantly recognizes who it is, but also knows that the caliber of its output has not deteriorated in the slightest.

Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow (1965-1980)

For Rolls-Royce, the Silver Shadow marked a turning point in both design and production. It was smaller and more angular than the more conventionally attractive Silver Cloud and the first Rolls-Royce with unibody construction. The 200 horsepower V-8 Silver Shadow had the best handling of any preceding Rolls, but it was also quicker, lighter, and more powerful. The Silver Shadow is the company's signature vehicle, therefore it comes as no surprise that it is the most prevalent Rolls-Royce on our roads today despite the company's more contemporary-looking vehicles of today.

Rolls-Royce Corniche (1971-1995)

The Rolls-Royce Corniche exudes sophistication, performs effortlessly, and has more than enough room for lounging . It looks great in all fashionable settings. The Mulliner Park Ward subsidiary of Rolls-Royce used the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow's two-door model as a design influence when creating the Corniche. Although it was old-school manufacturing, this historic car had cutting-edge innovations that were unusual for the time. The Corniche's exterior was exquisite and intricately crafted. The Corniche had a classy appearance thanks to the gorgeous paint and chrome work.

Rolls-Royce Twenty (1922-1929)

The Twenty is nothing less than a work of art, and it has one of the most exquisite looks of them yet. The Twenty's design and grace have endured as the definitive aesthetic of driving during the Roaring Twenties , despite the fact that it was smaller and less expensive than the Silver Ghost and the Phantom I. The Twenty was actually the smallest vehicle Rolls-Royce ever produced, and it was the first Rolls-Royce intended for owner-only use without a chauffeur.

Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost (1907-1926)

The six-cylinder Silver Ghost established the company's one-model strategy after Rolls-first Royce's few vehicles, and it was coveted by the affluent and famous. The Silver Ghost made a significant contribution to Rolls-Royce's reputation for performance as well as luxury comfort. The Silver Ghost is regarded by many as one of Rolls-Royce's best-ever creations. The new Ghost is one of the few vehicles that makes motorized forward motion into an artistic experience.

Rolls-Royce Phantom (2003-Present)

The Phantom looks different from the previous generation from the outside. It's still enormous and intimidating, but it's a little less ferocious now. Additionally, in an effort to increase efficiency, it is lighter than its predecessor. The Rolls-Royce Phantom may be too flashy or simply too enormous for some luxury automobile purchasers, but most simply cannot afford one . If you can get past all of those obstacles, though, you're in for a treat since this extraordinary Rolls-Royce flagship has no equal in terms of luxury, unparalleled ride comfort, or quiet refinement.

Rolls-Royce Phantom III (1936-1939)

The Phantom III was the most advanced and potent Rolls-Royce before World War I , boasting cutting-edge engineering and a commanding appearance. Up to the 1998 release of the Silver Seraph, the Phantom III was the first and only 12-cylinder Rolls-Royce. The 7.3-liter engine had a double ignition system, two spark plugs for each cylinder, two fuel pumps, aluminum heads, and wet liners. Despite its size, the Phantom III operated in almost complete silence and was fairly quick. The Phantom III, like its illustrious forerunner the Silver Ghost, was capable of achieving speeds of about 100 miles per hour, an astounding performance for any automobile of the time.

Rolls-Royce 25/30 H.P. (1936-1938)

The 25/30 horsepower Rolls-Royce, introduced in the spring of 1936 , was initially proposed as a model to be produced alongside the 20/25 horsepower. It quickly found a market among individuals who valued the brand's grandeur and top-notch engineering but possibly did not require the Phantom models' higher performance. In movies like the original 1978 version of "Death on the Nile," the 25/30 is regarded as a classic vehicle from the Depression Era and is used to symbolize the opulent luxury automobiles of the time.

Rolls-Royce Cullinan (2018-Present)

The Cullinan, which is named after the biggest diamond in the world, aims to be the pinnacle of luxury SUV motoring. The Cullinan benefits from Rolls-unwavering Royce's commitment to hand-built attention to detail, material quality, refinement, and comfort; although it rides slightly higher than a Phantom or Ghost, it still has that signature Rolls-Royce feel. The Cullinan provides a satisfying driving experience while riding completely on sophisticated air suspension and is targeted at owners who are more likely to drive than regular Rolls-Royce customers. It has a crisper feel than the Phantom, tighter body control, and remarkable agility for its bulk.

Rolls-Royce Sweptail (2017)

There is nothing that can make overly cool gearheads into starry-eyed, slack-jawed kiddies like an exquisite one-of-a-kind Rolls-Royce. The one-of-a-kind 2017 Sweptail coupe, which was inspired by racing yachts, has a panoramic glass roof and the biggest Pantheon grille of any contemporary Rolls-Royce , which was machined from solid aluminum and hand polished to a mirror brilliance. According to the carmaker, the exquisitely polished and simple interior "equates elegance with simplicity." It has unusual features including an illuminated glass rim around the baggage shelf, a whole set of Rolls-Royce Bespoke luggage, and button-activated matching dual attaché bags.

Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith (1947-1959)

The Silver Wraith was a particularly remarkable vehicle for more reasons than just the fact that it was the company's first automobile following World War II. The performance was improved, but the improvements were concealed by the exquisite physique, making them invisible to human sight. Both the upgraded coil and wishbone independent front suspension and the 4,257cc overhead-inlet, side-exhaust engine created prior to the war were employed.
