Considerations for Choosing a Scary Costume

  • Theme: Choose a theme or concept for your costume. Whether you want to be a zombie, vampire, witch, mummy, or mad scientist, think about what scares you the most and which character you can effectively portray.
  • Suitability: Ensure that the costume is appropriate for the occasion. Consider the environment and the people you will be around. Choose a scary costume that will not offend or harm others.
  • Comfort: Consider your comfort level while wearing the costume. Make sure it fits well and allows for easy movement. Avoid costumes that may restrict your vision or breathing.
  • Scare Factor: Evaluate how scary the costume is. Look for elements that can enhance the fright, such as creepy masks, realistic props, or special effects makeup. The goal is to create a chilling impact on those who see you.
  • Originality: Consider how unique and original your costume is. Avoid common and overused themes, and try to include personal touches that set your costume apart from others.

Halloween costumes have a long history dating back to ancient Celtic traditions. People would dress up to ward off evil spirits during the festival of Samhain. Over time, this tradition evolved into a celebration where people would wear scary costumes to scare off the spirits. Today, Halloween costumes are a popular way to express creativity and enjoy the excitement of the holiday.

How to Incorporate Glasses into Your Costume

When incorporating glasses into your costume, there are several ways to go about it. One option is to choose a character with glasses that you can emulate. This could be a famous character from a book, movie, or TV show who is known for wearing glasses.

Another option is to use costume glasses , which are specifically designed to be worn as part of a costume. These glasses often have unique shapes and designs that can help enhance the overall look of your costume.

If you want to get even more creative, you can customize your own glasses . This could involve adding decorations, like glitter or stickers, to a pair of plain glasses. You could also paint the frames or add embellishments to make them truly unique. By customizing your glasses, you can really make them a standout part of your costume.

In addition to the glasses themselves, you can also incorporate makeup into your costume to further enhance the effect. For example, you could use eyeshadow or eyeliner to create a dramatic look that complements your glasses. You could also use makeup to create the illusion of different eye shapes or colors , depending on the character you are portraying.

Don’t forget to accessorize your glasses with other props for an even more enhanced effect. For example, if you are going for a retro look, you could pair your glasses with a vintage hat or scarf . If you are dressing up as a superhero, you could add a cape or a mask to complete the look. By combining glasses with other props, you can really take your costume to the next level.

Ensuring Safety and Comfort with Costume Glasses

When it comes to rocking your scary Halloween costume with glasses, there’s more to consider than just the spooky aesthetic . In this section, we’ll dive into the importance of ensuring safety and comfort with costume glasses. From ensuring proper fit and visibility to exploring alternative options for vision correction , we’ve got you covered with helpful tips and tricks that will make your Halloween night a sight to remember. So let’s delve into the world of costume glasses and make sure your Halloween look is not only stylish , but also safe and comfortable .

Ensuring Proper Fit and Visibility

Ensuring proper fit and visibility is crucial when wearing glasses for your Halloween costume. Follow these steps to ensure that your glasses are comfortable and provide clear vision:

1. Measure your face: Use a tape measure or ruler to determine the width of your face and the size of your glasses frames. This will help you find glasses that fit properly.

2. Choose the right frame shape: Consider the shape of your face when selecting glasses frames. Oval faces suit most frame shapes, while round faces benefit from angular frames. Square faces complement round or oval frames, and heart-shaped faces look best with bottom-heavy frames.

3. Adjust the nose pads: Many glasses have adjustable nose pads that can be moved closer together or farther apart. Make sure the pads sit comfortably on the bridge of your nose.

4. Tighten or loosen the temples: The temples are the arms of your glasses that hook behind your ears. Adjust them for a comfortable fit.

5. Check your peripheral vision: Put on your glasses and move your eyes left and right, up and down. Ensure that your vision isn’t obstructed. Adjust the glasses if there are any blind spots.

6. Ensure proper lens prescription: If you wear prescription glasses, make sure the lenses in your costume glasses match your prescription. Using the wrong prescription can strain your eyes and cause discomfort.

Glasses have been used for centuries to correct vision. The earliest evidence of glasses dates back to 13th-century Italy, where inventors created spectacles with convex lenses. Glasses have since evolved into fashionable accessories that provide clear vision and reflect personal style.

Using Non-Prescription Costume Glasses

When using non-prescription costume glasses for your Halloween costume, there are several factors to consider. The styles and designs of these glasses are quite diverse, ranging from classic and retro styles to unique and themed designs. It’s important to choose a style that complements your costume and enhances the overall effect.

Secondly, comfort is key. Make sure to select glasses that are comfortable for the duration of your Halloween festivities. Look for glasses with adjustable frames or nose pads that provide a secure and comfortable fit.

It is crucial to keep in mind that non-prescription costume glasses may not offer the same level of eye protection as regular eyewear. They are primarily for looks, so it’s best to avoid wearing them during activities that could pose a risk to your eyes, such as playing sports or using sharp objects.

Proper care and maintenance are also essential to keep your non-prescription costume glasses looking their best. Regularly clean them with a gentle lens cleaning solution and store them in a protective case when not in use.

Ensure that the design of the non-prescription costume glasses aligns with the character or theme of your costume. This will add an extra touch of authenticity to your Halloween look, whether you’re aiming for a spooky vibe or a whimsical character.

By considering these factors, you will be able to find the perfect non-prescription costume glasses to complete your Halloween costume and create a truly authentic look.

Alternative Options for Vision Correction

When it comes to vision correction for Halloween costumes with glasses, there are a few options to consider:

– Contact Lenses: Non-prescription colored contacts can enhance your costume. They come in various designs such as cat eyes or vampire red, adding a spooky element to your look.

– Decorative Glasses: If you wear prescription glasses, you can opt for decorative frames that match your costume. These can be found in various styles and shapes, from Harry Potter -inspired round frames to steampunk goggles.

– Eyewear Accessories: Another option is to use eyewear accessories such as chains or straps to incorporate them into your costume. This way, you can keep your regular glasses while maintaining the Halloween look.

Remember, whichever option you choose, ensure proper fit and visibility:

1. Make sure prescribed and fitted contact lenses by an eye care professional to avoid discomfort or complications.

2. If using non-prescription decorative glasses, ensure they do not obstruct your vision or hinder clear sight.

3. For eyewear accessories, securely attach them to your glasses to prevent accidents or damage.

Pro-tip: Consult with an eye care professional before trying alternative options for vision correction to ensure suitability.

👾 Kooky Spooks | 1980s Inflatable Head Halloween Costume

Kooky Spooks Costumes including Wunkin Punkin.

“My Dad picked out the costumes for my sister and me, and purchased Kooky Spooks for both of us. The makeup for the skin burned and itched…We were…mortified to been seen in public with the inflatable Kooky heads.” Tia for The Guardian

NOTE: When this post was first published in 2016, sources of all photos were cited via links. Some of those links are now broken or otherwise unavailable.

I have no memory of Kooky Spooks costumes. I had to share the image below on Facebook just to find out exactly what was going on in the picture. I guess I missed out on this innovative use of beach ball technology. 😁

Kooky Spooks, as the pictures indicate, featured a giant blow-up head. Kids could choose from several different characters including a black cat, an orange pumpkin, and a green monster. All the inflatable heads featured cute bulging eyes. Some costumes featured ears, horns, legs, and tentacles. The costumes also featured:

  • Water-base makeup
  • Rugged 8 gage vinyl
  • Safety Hi-glow reflective tape
  • Comfort control air cap (adjustable!)

There were nine zany costumes. Here were their names:

  • Wunkin Punkin
  • Woblin Goblin
  • Wonder Witch
  • Spacey Casey
  • Scary Spider

The Kooky Spooks were heavily marketed but didn’t stick around long. The short little capes may have been their demise. They look like restaurant bibs on some of these older kids. 😄

So funny! I was Scardy Cat at 9 years old. I do remember the face paint itching like hell. But it sure was a giggle fest getting in and out of the back seat of our little Chevette with this thing bonking around like crazy. (I grew up in a rural area – we had to drive to trick or treat. LOL)

LOL! So funny. Great story. Thanks for sharing. The Chevette really made it real. I totally remember those. Have a Happy Halloween!!

I believe there were 11 costumes, you left out Ishy Bat and Kooky Klown. You had Ishy Bat titled Scardy Cat. Scardy Cat is the yellow costume that its face looks like a Cat and usually the individual’s face is painted yellow. Ishy Bat is the costume you titled Scardy Cat, it has orange wings on both sides of its head, which is hard to see. I was Ishy Bat back in 1980, minus the black face paint. It’s very confusing and easy to get the images mixed up. I actually thought there were only 9 costumes until I came across Kooky Klown and Bone Head. They did seem to debut in 1979 and were popular until 1980. Very short fade.

If you want to view all the costumes, you can Google Kooky Spooks followed by the costumes name and hit search. Then click on ‘Images’ (next to shopping) at the top via Google Search.

Thanks for the information!! I love these so much. Wish I’d had one. I wonder why the short fade. They were just so fun with those big heads on top of your head. =) I’ll let your comment stand as correction to the post. Thanks, again. jen

Spook-tacular Halloween costume ideas for your busy college life

Byline photo of Elizabeth McCall

Halloween is just around the corner, which means “spooky season” has arrived. Like every holiday, Halloween sneaks up on us, which results in trying to find a last-minute costume. Here are some costume ideas that require minimal effort and will not break the bank.

While the “Do it Yourself” trend has taken over the internet in various projects and crafts, it is especially useful when it comes to Halloween costumes. It is an easy way to get creative and save a penny. The ultimate affordable costume is simple — use what you already have around the house. You may be unaware that you have a costume sitting in your closet, and remember, not all costumes need to be scary.

A pair of Dr. Martens, “mom jeans” and a denim jacket create a perfect 80s costume; just add some hairspray. Have a red polo shirt and khaki pants? There is your costume, Jake from State Farm. The iconic greaser costume requires four basic items: a plain white t-shirt, black pants, a leather jacket and a pair of Converse. Add hair gel and you are on your way to becoming Danny Zuko.

Maybe you want to have a more generic costume such as a witch or a pirate, then realize you have the props to pull it off. The key is to get creative with your materials and use imagination and resources. Pinterest is a great platform to search for ideas.

It is easy to become inspired by the thousands of Halloween costumes, but not everyone can afford them, or may not have all the materials on hand. Shopping at your local thrift store could help you find what you are looking for on a budget while supporting a local business.

Pop Culture

Each year, our world becomes consumed by what is trending in pop culture. These trends make the most relatable, popular costumes. To no surprise, some of the most popular trends this year are the “Barbie” movie, the Netflix show, “Wednesday,” and last but not least, Taylor Swift.

Since its debut in July 2023, “Barbie” has continued to be a hot topic. It is a straightforward, fan-favorite costume — not only Barbie, but Ken too. Barbie and Ken is a trendy yet classic couple’s costume.

Wednesday Addams is another costume that has made a comeback. The film and TV series, “The Addams Family” has served as a famous costume choice, for individuals, couples and even families for decades. Netflix’s “Wednesday,” has reintroduced the classic story right in time.

Whether or not you listen to her music, Taylor Swift is known as a pop culture icon. Unless you live under a rock, you are probably aware that the Eras Tour took the world by storm this summer. There will no doubt be Eras Tour costumes with inspiration from Swift’s countless styles from the tour.

While most pop culture costumes are based on what is currently trending, it is important to not forget about timeless pop culture when it comes to Halloween. You can never go wrong with inspiration from classic Halloween movies such as “Beetlejuice,” “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” “Halloween,” “Scream,” “Hocus Pocus,” or “The Nightmare Before Christmas.”

Simple but bold

Another idea is to dress down your outfit and dress up your face by wearing a simple costume with a bold makeup look. Halloween is an excuse to go above and beyond if you have artistic makeup skills. There are endless options to choose from, such as a: doll; clown; scarecrow; skeleton; cat; mermaid; The Joker; zombie; spiderwebs; and much more. Doing this can be time-consuming, but it is a chance for you to show off your artistic talents.

Glam makeup is a costume in and of itself. Although, nothing is stopping you from going all out with both an eye-catching costume and makeup. This interactive holiday allows people to embrace their innovative skills. Nothing is too spooky, too much, or not enough. There are no rules on All Hallows’ Eve, except for one — don’t light the black flame candle.

It can be hard to purchase gifts for loved ones during the holidays, especially as a college student. But getting creative with the type of gifts you give can help make them more affordable.
