Fantasmic! is a long-running nighttime show at both Disneyland in California and Disney's Hollywood Studios in Florida , and formerly at Tokyo DisneySea . It is about the power of the imagination, showcased by Mickey experiencing a dream during a night in which he is asleep. It originated at Disneyland in 1992 after Disneyland's entertainment department was asked to create a nighttime spectacular involving water and fireworks to invigorate the space in front of the Rivers of America . Disneyland Entertainment employed the resources of Walt Disney Feature Animation and Walt Disney Imagineering as collaborators. Much of the area around the Rivers of America needed to be reworked, including terracing the walkways to accommodate viewing and modifying part of Tom Sawyer Island so that it could act as a stage for much of the show's live-action. The show temporarily closed at Disneyland in 2016 to make room for Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge , but was brought back with completely new scenes on the park's 62nd birthday on July 17, 2017 . On April 22, 2023, the animatronic dragon burst into flames during the finale. While no cast members or crew were hurt, the dragon and much of the show equipment in their pit were severely damaged.

In 1996 , Walt Disney Entertainment in Florida partnered with Imagineering and Feature Animation to bring a new version of the show to Disney's Hollywood Studios (formerly the Disney-MGM Studios), featuring newly animated and live-action scenes. The Rivers of America at the Magic Kingdom was not conducive to a duplication of the layout at Disneyland, so a new purpose-built 10,000 seat amphitheater was built at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Intended to boost low attendance numbers at that park, the new Fantasmic! show was also seen as a needed replacement for Sorcery in the Sky , an aging nighttime fireworks show. On March 12, 2020, the show temporarily closed at Disney's Hollywood Studios and Disneyland due to the coronavirus pandemic. On August 17, the show's water feature was drained after Walt Disney World reopened during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in July 2020. However, following Disney Parks' reopening, Disneyland announced that the updated version of the show would return on May 28, 2022, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Disneyland version, while Walt Disney World announced that a newly revised and upgraded version of the show would return on November 3, 2022 at Disney's Hollywood Studios as part of Walt Disney World's 50th anniversary celebration.

The third edition of Fantasmic! debuted on April 28, 2011 and ended on February 28, 2020 at Tokyo DisneySea in Japan. It featured a new theme song and, being set in the Mediterranean Harbor area of the park, was done on a series of barges, with a central "hat" tower instead of a stage on which Mickey and other characters could appear. Prior to the start of the show, guests would engage in doing the wave to get others excited and pumped up for the event. This is quite common at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. As of 2022, some of the elements from the defunct Tokyo version are now shown in the revamped Disneyland and Disney's Hollywood Studios version as well as the Imagination song in the post-show.

Disneyland version

The show is located on the waters of the Rivers of America at Disneyland and on a stage across the waterway. A tavern and tall trees act as a backdrop for the show. To begin, lights around the Rivers of America fade and a female narrator introduces the story.

Welcome to Fantasmic! Tonight, our friend and host Mickey Mouse uses his vivid imagination to create magical imagery for all to enjoy. Nothing is more wonderful than the imagination, for, in a moment, you can experience a beautiful fantasy or an exciting adventure. But beware, nothing is more powerful than the imagination, for it can also expand your greatest fears into an overwhelming nightmare. Are the powers of Mickey's imagination strong enough, and bright enough, to withstand the evil forces that invade Mickey's dreams? You are about to find out. For we now invite you to join Mickey, and experience Fantasmic! ... a journey beyond your wildest imagination.

The show follows a dream of Mickey Mouse that he has one night while fast asleep, which begins with him in a tuxedo discovering the water and light effects while he tests them out. He then proceeds to direct the effects like a conductor. Then he shoots pyrotechnics from his index fingertips just like in the " When You Wish Upon a Star " number in the Sing-Along Songs Disneyland Fun . The show's signature water projection screens are eventually activated, onto which animation from " The Sorcerer's Apprentice " sequence from Fantasia . Musical scores from "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" and the "Imagination" theme accompany the animation as Mickey conducts animated shooting stars pyrotechnics launched from the six pyrotechnic barges on the river.

The animation then blends with live performers interpreting different flowers. The petals then become huge green leaves and combine with onscreen animation to become flora and fauna of the jungle. The projections then show Sorcerer Mickey walking into the " Circle of Life " scene from The Lion King , as Rafiki then goes and lifts a baby Simba into the air. The lighting and music change to a jungle beat, and Kaa from The Jungle Book makes his way across the island with hypnotic beams of light firing from his eyes. Accompanying this scene are three floating barges carrying King Louie and black-lit monkeys (from the Tokyo version) across the river, dancing along to the beat; with images of pink elephants playing the tune to Hakuna Matata as Timon , Pumbaa , and a growing-up Simba walk across a log like in the song, followed by more pink elephants.

The music segues to a contemporary rendition of " Pink Elephants on Parade " from Dumbo , as more pink elephants appear onscreen and in the form of performers on the island. The elephants continue to dance until Mickey discovers a magical lamp. He rubs it, causing Genie to be freed via onscreen animation. He then shows Sorcerer Mickey his powers while singing " Friend Like Me ". Some of the transformations include turning into Donald Duck and Goofy , as well as turning Mickey into Pinocchio complete with dancers that look like Minnie Mouse and Daisy Duck , as a tribute to the original Pinocchio sequence. Genie then disappears causing Sorcerer Mickey to go underwater.

Sorcerer Mickey then finds the kingdom of Atlantica . As the guests see Ariel swimming around on the projections, it then transforms into the world of Finding Nemo , as Mr. Ray takes Nemo , Dory , and the rest of their classmates on a trip to see the stingray migration. Onscreen animation then shows Cleo , Pinocchio , and Jiminy Cricket underwater. An animated Monstro the Whale interacts with live splash effects on the river. The storyline progresses as Sorcerer Mickey notices his dream becoming darker as he has sucked down a whirlpool on a spellbook. After his eyes were shown wondering where he is, a ship lost in a stormy sea at night is shown. A concussion cannon is fired from Sailing Ship Columbia , which has been transformed into the Black Pearl , where Hector Barbossa , Jack Sparrow , Elizabeth Swann , and the pirates participate in a stunt sequence as the ship makes its pass. Originally, this sequence was themed to Peter Pan , but it was transformed into a Pirates of the Caribbean scene following the 2017 refurbishment. However, you can see silhouettes of Peter, Wendy, Michael, and John flying over the moon after Sorcerer Mickey paints it.

The projections then transform into Agrabah , where Aladdin and Jasmine are on the stage as if they're flying on the Magic Carpet (set to A Whole New World ). Rapunzel and Flynn Rider , Ariel and Eric , and Belle and the Beast appear on three floating stages (transformed since the jungle scene earlier) on the river, dancing to a medley of each princess' signature song (" Beauty and the Beast ", " Part of Your World ", and " I See the Light " respectively) accompanied by lighting and water effects.

The music turns darker, Mickey in his Sorcerer's Apprentice outfit encounters the Magic Mirror as he tells him "True magical power lies within the mirror, gaze deep into your own reflection and see powers better than you could even imagine." Mickey is skeptical at first, but he eventually decides to take a look. Mickey then gets trapped inside the mirror where he eventually encounters The Evil Queen who has been transformed into The Old Hag . The hag summons Dr. Facilier's Shadow Demons as the "forces of evil" to transform Mickey Mouse's dream into a "nightmare Fantasmic." Onscreen, we see her face dissolve into that of Ursula . Ursula sings a bit of " Poor Unfortunate Souls " and joins the plot against Mickey as her two pet eels, Flotsam and Jetsam , glide across the river. Onscreen, the face of Ursula transforms into Chernabog . Animation from the "Night on Bald Mountain" sequence from Fantasia accompanies Mussorgsky's score. Luckily, Mickey eventually manages to escape the mirror.

FantasmicDragon1-Disney

Dragon Maleficent.

A pyrotechnic burst of flames heralds the arrival of Maleficent , beginning the climactic showdown sequence. Maleficent rises 30 feet from the stage and transforms into a dragon onscreen. The animation gives way to a 45-foot animatronic dragon, who rises from the stage before breathing fire onto the river. Sorcerer Mickey appears as he eventually uses his mind and sorcerer powers to destroy the dragon. As the dragon screams, the villains who have appeared are also destroyed onscreen (resulting in Chernabog vanishing away, destroying him, Ursula screams in agony as she is struck by bolts of lightning, destroying her too, The hag transforms back into the Evil Queen, causing her to also be destroyed and Maleficent falls to her death causing her to be destroyed lastly), and the sequence ends with a pyrotechnic burst from the river.

Following an appearance by Tinker Bell , the Mark Twain Riverboat crosses the stage, piloted by a black and white Mickey Mouse, dressed in attire from Steamboat Willie . Approximately fifty Disney and Pixar characters dance on the ship in a ribbon routine. The sequence is accompanied by searchlights, fountains, and pyrotechnic effects.

Mickey appears on top of the tavern (sometimes on the stage when the lift isn't working) as Sorcerer Mickey , and "conducts" laser beams, fireworks, and lighting effects that span the length of the river stage. In a flash, he disappears from atop the tavern, and re-appears center stage, resuming his tuxedo. Mickey says to the audience, "Some imagination, huh? Haha!" and with a laugh, he disappears in a flash. A final burst of pyrotechnics is accompanied by searchlights placed around the tavern and stage. As a finale, a brilliant green flash of pyrotechnics ignites on the water where the river once again becomes quiet and dark.

Disney's Hollywood Studios version

The show follows a dream of Mickey Mouse that he has one night while fast asleep. As the lights fade, a female narrator gives a brief welcome and mentions of the powers of imagination. A very faint musical note is heard, swelling and growing into a dramatic chord in the complete darkness. Once the chord strikes, two tall columns rise on stage left and right, with roving spotlights, until finally, Mickey appears center stage. He conducts various water fountain effects, until bringing up the giant water-mist "screens", which, in conjunction with a few flares, fade into the famous "Sorcerer's Apprentice" scene from Fantasia .

From there, the falling stars of the Sorcerer's Apprentice scene morph into flowers, and after a brief interlude, into a jungle scene. Elephants, giraffes, monkeys, birds, ostriches, rhinos, crocodiles, and cheetahs in black-lit fluorescent colors begin to herd in the mountain. The neon animals make noise and move around on the island while Rafiki and monkeys do a dance on floats traveling across the water, and Simba and Nala romp together on the water-mist screen. Next, a large bubble montage takes place, where scenes and characters from major classic animated Disney movies ( The Lion King , The Jungle Book , Dumbo , Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs , Alice in Wonderland , Hercules , Pinocchio , Aladdin , Mulan , Cinderella , Lady and the Tramp , Fantasia , The Princess and the Frog , Tangled , Moana , Frozen , Bambi , Tarzan , Beauty and the Beast , and The Little Mermaid ) appear in floating bubbles. An animated Monstro then appears onscreen, accompanied by a heavy musical score as he crashes through the waters. The chaotic sea morphs into Mickey lost in an overflowed room as he is whisked into a whirlpool. After Mickey wonders where he is, he makes a cry for help, and the scene shifts to a medley of Disney heroes and heroines. First is a scene from Pocahontas , with Pocahontas singing Just Around the Riverbend , then it transitions to scenes of Mulan , Tarzan , Encanto , The Princess and the Frog , The Hunchback of Notre Dame , Hercules , Aladdin , Frozen II , and Moana .

Fantasmic

Sorcerer Mickey in the Florida version.

The show then moves into classic dancing scenes with Aurora and Prince Phillip , Cinderella and Prince Charming , and Jasmine and Aladdin . Three small floats now arrive, with Belle and the Beast , Ariel and Prince Eric , and Snow White and her Prince each contained in their own float. As each float reaches the center, the spotlight shines on it, with the accompanying signature melody from each movie — " Beauty and the Beast ", " Part of Your World ", and " Someday My Prince Will Come ", respectively.

The music takes on an eerie tone as Mickey's dream takes a turn for the worse. The Queen appears and concocts a spell amidst pyrotechnics and other special effects, and turns herself into a hag. She invokes the help of Ursula , Cruella De Vil , Scar , Frollo , and Jafar . Jafar uses his magic to send Mickey to the Cave of Wonders. After escaping a wave of lava, Mickey encounters Jafar, who transforms himself into a giant black cobra to squeeze him and possibly drain him dry, appearing on both the stage and the mist screens. Seeing a magic lamp, Mickey rubs it, assuming it will help him . Unfortunately, Jafar is transformed into a genie and calls upon Hades , who laments on how "noble" Mickey's thoughts are before he calls Chernabog , who summons spirits from the dead .

As Chernabog finishes, Mickey, now in his Brave Little Tailor outfit, comes face to face with Maleficent, who tells the mouse that he'll now deal with her and all the forces of her imagination. As her pinnacle rises, she transforms into a 40-foot-tall fire-breathing dragon that sets the waters ablaze as the villains laugh at Mickey and his imagination. Guests as far as halfway back in the theater can feel the heat from the fire. Mickey, finally deciding to stand up to the villains for his dream, manages to pulls a nearby sword out from its stone (similar to The Sword in the Stone ) and creates a wall of water around the island, smothering the flames and defeating the dragon. He eliminates the villains from the dream world using the power of his imagination and his sword. The villains feel the wrath of the magical electricity from the sword; resulting in Chernabog attempting to shield himself from the light of the electricity as he vanishes away, Hades cringes in surprise from the effects as he too disappears, Jafar screams in agonizing pain decimating him as well, Frollo looks back in shock as he yells out "Witchcraft!" as he is overpowered, Scar snarls in a fury as he is overtaken, Cruella looks back in shock, yelling out "What is this?!" before also being vanquished, then Ursula is also taken down as she screams in agony while being struck by bolts of lightning, followed by the hag who transforms back into the Evil Queen causing her to also be annihilated, and finally Maleficent dies as the water splashes with a large firework bang.

Steamboat Mickey from Fantasmic

Mickey controlling Steamboat Willie.

All is quiet until we see Tinker Bell fly to restore the mountain. Magical stars sparkle in the mountain as the Steamboat Willie riverboat approaches. Then a spark of pyrotechnics ignites from the riverboat, revealing Mickey, looking as he did in the original short, controlling the boat. As it glides past the audience, various Disney characters appear aboard the boat, usually waving streamers. A celebratory atmosphere prevails amid a flurry of fireworks.

With another flash of pyrotechnics, Mickey disappears from Steamboat Willie riverboat and re- appears atop the highest point of the mountain in his Sorcerer outfit as fireworks, fire, and water light up the stage. As the finale concludes, Mickey disappears from the top of the mountain with another spark of pyrotechnics, a small explosion in the main stage and simultaneously reappears in his shiny tuxedo suit. A small applause from the crowd and Mickey says, "Some imagination, huh? Haha!" Pyrotechnics shoot out of the main stage and barges on the moat, he vanishes one last time to the final notes of the music while a cone of lights and searchlights bright up the stage for a few seconds. All turns dark once again and the show has concluded.

Tokyo DisneySea version

Like the other incarnations, the show follows a dream of Mickey Mouse that he has one night while fast asleep. The show begins with the tune of the Sorcerer's Apprentice as out of the stars, Sorcerer Mickey emerges on a tower of stars in a comet. The new theme song, Imagination plays as Mickey conducts the water and images of different characters appear on the tower. The music shifts into the instrumental Fantasmic theme and continues into Sorcerer's Apprentice as Mickey conducts the stars and sea and calls on the Magic Brooms . The waters rise and we enter the sea with Ariel singing " Part of Your World ", with Crush and his sea turtles swimming in the background. The dancing fish from Fantasia's Nutcracker suite also appears as does Jiminy Cricket in his bubble, who pops it and fills the sky with bubbles.

Mickey's eyes appear in the dark asking what's going on and the show enters the jungle. While Tarzan and Jane Porter appear swinging on the projection tower, floats featuring giant inflatable versions of Baloo , King Louie , Pumbaa , and Simba as a cub appear along with a floating Kaa . A medley of music from Tarzan , " I Just Can't Wait to Be King ", " The Bare Necessities ", " I Wan'na Be Like You ", and " Hakuna Matata " plays, eventually building up into the Circle of Life .

Mickey Mouse Tokyo Disneysea fantasmic

Sorcerer Mickey controlling the fountain at Tokyo DisneySea .

When Rafiki is about to hold up Simba though, Stitch appears instead (similar to one of the Inter-Stitch-al trailers of the film) and the music goes into an electric guitar version of Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride with Stitch conducting the water while Angel pilots Stitch's red speeder shooting plasmablasts. Mickey appears again, accompanied by the show's theme song and When You Wish Upon A Star and sets the stage for an appearance by the Genie singing Friend Like Me as well as the scene of A Whole New World . As Aladdin and Jasmine fly off, the music segues into Cinderella and a sequence based on the Disney Princesses.

After the Princess medley, Mickey encounters the Magic Mirror and asks "Who's the most powerful Sorcerer of all?" The Mirror tells him "True magical power lies within the mirror, gaze deep into your own reflection... Look closer... That's it, closer...". Mickey is then trapped inside, allowing the Witch and the villains to take control, each one appearing within the mirror. The Witch calls on the assistance of Ursula (singing " Poor Unfortunate Souls ") and Chernabog (whose appearance is accompanied with a mix of Night on Bald Mountain and " Hellfire "). The witch laughs at the power of Imagination and the last villain emerges from the mirror: Maleficent who shows the power of her imagination by turning into her dragon form. Mickey defeats Maleficent (along with Chernabog, Ursula and the Witch who transforms back into the Evil Queen) with his magic wand and the power of his imagination. He falls back into his sleeping body and with a wave of Tinker Bell 's wand, the show moves into the finale, with a reprise of the song and many of the good characters appearing on the barges, including regular Mickey. The barges stop and Sorcerer Mickey reappears on the tower, clad in a flowing white robe to conduct the final fireworks and fountains as the theme builds. Mickey then remarks "Imagination! Haha!" translated to Japanese "イマジネーション! ハハ!" and disappears, with a few notes of the Sorcerer's Apprentice theme and the final fanfare. The tower takes on the appearance of the Sorcerer's Hat and the exit music plays.

Steamboat Willie in Fantasmic 2

The characters riding Steamboat Willie at the end of the Disneyland version of the show.

Disneyland's version of the finale has included many different characters since its 1992 debut and has changed throughout the years, such as to replace older characters with newer ones.

The current finale character line-up includes Mickey, Minnie Mouse , Chip and Dale , Goofy , Pluto , Donald Duck , Cinderella, Prince Charming, Suzy and Perla , Snow White and her Prince, Aladdin, Jasmine, Aurora , Prince Phillip , Tiana , Ariel, Prince Eric, Belle, the Beast, Rapunzel, Flynn Rider, Mary Poppins , the Chimney Sweeps, Alice , the White Rabbit , the Mad Hatter , Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum , Woody , Buzz Lightyear , Jessie , and two Green Army Men .

Also, during the special 20th-anniversary performances of the show in May 2012, Roger Rabbit , Br'er Rabbit , Br'er Fox , Br'er Bear , the Three Little Pigs , and the Big Bad Wolf (all of whom previously appeared in the finale during the earlier years of the show's existence) made appearances.

Walt Disney World's version of the finale currently includes Mickey, Minnie, Chip, Dale, Goofy, Pluto, Donald, Pinocchio, Geppetto, Snow White, and her Prince, Doc, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, Sneezy, Bashful, Dopey, Aladdin, Jasmine, Genie, Moana, Belle, Beast, Ariel, Prince Eric, Tiana, Rafiki, Stitch, Pocahontas, Meeko, Fa Mulan, Elsa , Baloo, and Mary Poppins.

However, the character line-up can sometimes vary between shows as other random characters are occasionally featured instead. These include Daisy Duck , Judy Hopps , Nick Wilde , Anna , Scrooge McDuck, Alice, Peter Pan, Jiminy Cricket , Aurora , Cinderella , Mei Lee and Mirabel Madrigal .

As in Disneyland, the character line-up has gone through changes since its debut. For example: Br'er Bear, John Smith, Hercules, Megara , Phil, Bert , and the Chimney Sweeps appeared on the boat regularly in the past.

Other characters who appeared in the finale over the years include Mr. Smee , Mushu, Tigger, Br'er Fox, Fairy Godmother , Quasimodo, Lilo , Timon, Max Goof, and Robin Hood .

  • Barge 2: Chip, Dale, Clarice, Ariel, Prince Eric, Max the Sheepdog
  • Barge 3: Donald, Daisy, Goofy, Aladdin, Jasmine, Abu

Differences between the versions

Although the shows in Disneyland, Disney's Hollywood Studios and Tokyo DisneySea are similar in many respects, there are some differences between the three versions.

  • In the old Disneyland version of the finale, as soon as Mickey says "Some imagination, huh? Haha!", the cone of lights immediately turns on and fireworks from the barges surrounding the stage ignite. This caused the audience to view how Mickey "vanishes". Now, like the Disney World version, there is a spark of bright pyrotechnics as soon as the line is said. In the Tokyo DisneySea version, this illusion is created by pyrotechnics at Mickey's platform, followed by a quick release trap set within the platform.
  • The choreography of the Opening Mickey and Sorcerer Mickey in both Disneyland and Disney's Hollywood Studios are different in their own ways. At Tokyo DisneySea, this choreography is completely removed, as this show has a different opening.
  • Whereas the show is performed on the Rivers of America at Disneyland, Disney needed a new nighttime draw for Disney's Hollywood Studios. The Hollywood Hills Amphitheater built at Disney's Hollywood Studios was made specifically for Fantasmic!
  • At Disney's Hollywood Studios, the show runs for almost 27 minutes (due to the montage of Disney clips inside bubbles, the additional villains, and the wall of water at the climax), compared to Disneyland's which is only 22 minutes. The Tokyo DisneySea version runs at approximately 23 minutes.
  • The Jungle Scene with Kaa, King Louie, and the monkeys from The Jungle Book at Disneyland is replaced with a tribute to The Lion King at Disney's Hollywood Studios. However, King Louie and the monkeys do appear briefly in the bubble scene. Tokyo DisneySea uses characters from both films series, as well as video from Tarzan to accent the "Circle of Life" scene from the Lion King. The 2017 and 2022 incarnation from Disneyland and Disney's Hollywood Studios also now uses both films.
  • In 2022, the Pocahontas segment was replaced with a Heroes segment for the Hollywood Studios version of Fantasmic which utilizes scenes of Mulan , Tarzan , Encanto , The Princess and the Frog , The Hunchback of Norte Dame , Hercules , Aladdin , Frozen II and Moana . However, Pocahontas was still utilized within the beginning of the segment with Pocahontas singing " Just Around the Riverbend ".
  • Since July 2015, clips of Tangled , The Princess and the Frog , and Frozen were included in the bubble montage scenes at the Hollywood Studios version.
  • In 2017, the Rock version of "Pink Elephants" is replaced with a Dubstep remix version at Disneyland.
  • Genie turning Mickey into Pinocchio complete with dancers that look like Minnie Mouse and Daisy Duck served as a tribute to the original Pinocchio sequence. Pinocchio still appears in the undersea segment as well as Jiminy.
  • There was a little scene of Ariel, Cinderella, and Belle as belly dancers. Eventually, however, the segment was considered to be a little adult for young audiences, forcing the show to use different characters/effects from "Friend Like Me".
  • Ursula's reprisal of " Poor Unfortunate Souls " is taken out at Disney's Hollywood Studios to introduce the other Disney villains. She plays a smaller role in the Florida show than in the California one. In Tokyo DisneySea's version, her role is identical to California's version, with the exception that the song is in Japanese.
  • More villains are featured in the Florida version. Many of the additions are villains from Disney animated features released after the Disneyland version was first introduced.
  • In California, Mickey destroys the villains by pointing a sword at the Dragon and saying, "You may think you're so powerful, well, this is my dream!" before light shoots from his sword toward the villains. But as of 2017, he appears in his sorcerer form and instead makes fireworks to defeat them. In Florida, he still says this, but before he destroys the villains, he causes a wall of water to block out the island and douse the flames; he then marches over to the sword in the stone and pulls it out.
  • Instead of the Mark Twain riverboat, the characters in the Florida show dance on a smaller boat based on the Steamboat Willie boat . Tokyo DisneySea uses four barges refurbished from previous shows performed in the Mediterranean Harbor.
  • In the California version, the giant snake that comes out on the stage is Kaa from The Jungle Book ; in the Florida version, the snake is Jafar from Aladdin . Also, Jafar has a much bigger role in the show than any other villain except for Maleficent. Tokyo DisneySea uses a redesigned Kaa as a moving float during the "Circle of Life" segment.
  • Having been updated, the California version's Maleficent dragon is considerably more advanced than its Florida counterpart and has a wider range of movement. Tokyo's dragon consists only of the head and neck emerging from a mirror. It is unknown if it is a puppet or an animatronic.
  • The final battle scene in California and Tokyo DisneySea's shows differ from their Florida counterpart. While the Florida version put Brave Little Tailor Mickey against the dragon Maleficent , Sorcerer Mickey is the one who battles Maleficent at Disneyland where he uses his magic controls and Tokyo DisneySea where he, instead of using a sword, shoots fireworks from a magic wand topped with a Hidden Mickey emblem.
  • Unlike the US versions, Tokyo DisneySea's show does not open with the "Welcome to Fantasmic!..." phrase as part of the opening act; instead, it starts off with Dukas' Sorcerer's Apprentice . The narration is recited as part of the pre-show announcements in both Japanese and English, by two male voices, instead of a female voice.
  • The music of the Villain segment of the show is almost identical to Disneyland's version, with two notable exceptions: in the Chernabog scene, the music is instead a mixture of "Night on Bald Mountain" and "Hellfire"; and instead of the Evil Queen's transformation into the Old Hag, Mickey is the one who summons the Magic Mirror and the power of evil.
  • The dialog in Tokyo DisneySea's version is in Japanese. When translated from Japanese to English, Mickey's dialog in Tokyo DisneySea's version is literally the same as the US versions (except when Mickey calls the Magic Mirror and the magic of romance).
  • In the Florida and Tokyo versions, Bruce Healey's exit music can be heard after each performance. In 2017, Disneyland's version replaced Bruce Healey's exit music with the "Imagination" song from Tokyo's version, but the original exit music can still be heard in the entrance plaza in between the two theme parks.
  • Tokyo's version features Ariel (as both human and mermaid), Beauty and the Beast , The Princess and the Frog (as animation), and Snow White (Theme and Finale). Cinderella is the only featured Princess who does not appear in all three versions. Belle and the Beast are featured as animation only; they do not appear in the Finale.
  • During Walt Disney World's years Mickey has had a total of 3 three different swords. The first one that was used from (1999-2003) was thin and long, the second one that was used from (2003-2011) was remodeled and was a bit bigger and pointier, and the current one is a lot larger and has more effects that include a red light beam effect that shoots toward the dragon.
  • In early 2014, Disneyland got new World of Color fountains that move to Mickey's movements, but were shortly taken down due to problems. In 2017 the new fountains were replaced with improved versions which move more like their World of Color counterparts.
  • In late 2011, Walt Disney World was given new firework effects in the finale which includes Mickey's new fireworks that appear behind him and new finale fireworks. Likewise, Disneyland got new firework blasts at the end of the show. During the 2011 refurbishment, the show returned to 7 shows a week and was given new dragon lighting effects. During the 15th anniversary, Walt Disney World was given new lights on the princess barges, like Disneyland's, and new low smoke effects and new fire in the dragon's mouth where it hits the water, the lift at the top of the mountain was experiencing problems and now comes up slower than it normally does for the performers' safety.
  • In 2010, Disneyland was given new lasers for the finale that move.
  • In (1999-2002), Mickey disappeared with flash fireworks all around the stage and so from any angle, you could not see how he disappeared, but in 2002 Mickey was given a spark blast around his elevator to make it more magical for the audience.
  • In the intro of the WDW version, almost anyone can see Mickey coming up the lift; Disneyland's lift is so fast when the lights hit Mickey he just came up.
  • In 2017, the original female singer in Disneyland's Fantasmic! was replaced by Heather Headley who also provided vocals on other Disney nighttime shows like World of Color Winter Dreams, Season of Light and Disney Illuminations in Paris. The original female singer can still be heard in the Orlando version.

A Taste of Fantasmic!

Due to the typical rainy weather in Florida, Disney Hollywood Studios will present a Taste of Fantasmic! which contains just the fountains and launches off the preloaded pyro, as it is too dangerous to unload it. This show is about 5 minutes.

With the success of FastPass viewing for the World of Color show at Disney's California Adventure, Fantasmic! at Disneyland started to offer the service. On December 12 , 2013 , Outdoor Vending Carts converted to FastPass machines were placed along the Big Thunder Trail offering Blue, Yellow, and Green Section FastPass tickets. Only guests with FastPass tickets are allowed in the viewing areas. Limited stand by viewing is available in small sections around the viewing area. In addition to FastPasses guests may also purchase a Dining Package at Blue Bayou or Riverbelle Terrace for a reserved viewing section. Aladdin's Oasis also offers a To-Go dinner package but it only grants the purchaser access to the Blue Section. For a limited time, Hungry Bear restaurant also offered a reserved viewing section called the Dessert Party.

In 2017 , the FastPass for Fantasmic was redone with the distribution now occurring next to the Mark Twain/Columbia dock. The regular Fastpass tickets are now for just one section of the viewing area with the rest reserved for those with dining packages from Riverbelle Terrace, Blue Bayou or Hungry Bear Restaurant with Aladdin's Oasis no longer offering the Fantasmic On-the-Go package and the package itself moved to Hungry Bear.

  • From 1992 to 2016, cast members working traffic control at the Disneyland version wore shirts that were yellow with a black stripe. They quickly gained the affectionate nickname "Fantasmic Bumblebees". When the show returned in 2017, the shirts were replaced with a simpler blue design.
  • Before the nighttime Rivers of America show project settled on what we now know as Fantasmic! , a show themed around The Haunted Mansion 's 999 ghosts taking over the Rivers of America with the working title "The River Haunt" was proposed but ultimately deemed too expensive.
  • The barges in the Jungle segment is also used for the Princess segment.
  • Since January 27 , 2023 , the show area at Disneyland is also used for the nighttime firework show Wondrous Journeys .
  • On April 22, 2023, the Maleficent dragon at the Disneyland version of the show caught fire during the scene where Mickey vanquishes Maleficent in defeat, sending plumes of smoke and fire into the air. The Anaheim Fire Department was called to the scene and the audience viewing area was quickly evacuated. No injuries were reported.

Things To Do

Subscriber only, entertainment | disney: ‘fantasmic’ marks 25 years of lighting up hollywood studios.

“Fantasmic” just reached the 25th anniversary of its debut as the nighttime spectacular at Disney’s Hollywood Studios . It’s a landmark rarely reached at Walt Disney World . Even Epcot’s beloved “IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth” show bowed out after a 20-year run in 2019.

The nightly production received updates — technical and creative — when it reopened last year after an extended pandemic-prompted shutdown. Its story continues to center on the imagination of Mickey Mouse, moments of good versus evil, a dramatic dragon sequence and literally a boatload of Disney characters.

“I think what you never outgrow is the mix that ‘Fantasmic’ offers,” says Amy Ardelean, general manager of entertainment at Hollywood Studios. “You have unbelievable lighting. You’ve got still mist screens that we project on, which is a really unique way of carrying the imaging. You’ve got lifts and all sorts of special effects. You got pyrotechnics. But more than that, you literally have 49 characters a night.”

The characters from across the decades are “the secret sauce,” she says.

“People have a tendency, no matter what age, to want Disney characters,” she says.

Therefore, it’s all hands on deck for the long-standing “Fantasmic” finale, which puts the characters on a steamboat that passes in front of the amphitheater seating area. Dwarfs, chipmunks, princesses and others go through choreography (and streamer work) that rings the vessel, never leaving a blank space facing the crowd.

“When we were in rehearsal, getting ready to open it again, our senior vice president Jason Kirk came to visit at the studios, and I said, ‘Hey, come with me. They’re there in the rehearsal room working on the steamboat,” Ardelean recalls. “He watched it intently for about 15 minutes and said to both [DHS VP] Jackie Swisher and myself, ‘I will never look at this the same way again. It looks so easy. But in reality, this is a lot to coordinate.’”

“Fantasmic” first appeared at Disneyland, and then a version in a new setting followed at Hollywood Studios — then known as Disney-MGM Studios — in 1998. Earlier this year, a fire involving the dragon during a Disneyland show went viral, and the California park’s production is on pause until spring 2024, Disney says. (Fear not, “our dragon’s healthy,” Ardelean says.)

The 30-minute show includes 80 people among the entertainment cast and crew, plus workers in operations, food and beverage and merchandise.

“Many of them saw it as guests,” Ardelean says.

Among the recent changes were additions to the digitalized projections.

“Instead of focusing on the live entertainment, we really leaned into some content updates in terms of the visuals that you see. You see so many different Disney characters throughout those images that we were able to stack some of our more recent releases and get them in that way,” Ardelean says.

(Joe Burbank/Orlando Sentinel)

When the show returned late last year, the storyline expanded beyond Pocahontas’ heroism to include Elsa, Aladdin, Moana and Mulan in action.

“What’s really classic about this new scene is that each of these characters are sort of unlikely or unexpected heroes in their storyline, and with that also they change the world in really unique ways,” Ardelean says. “And so when we get to that place where Mickey is in trouble and calls for a hero, the fact that we celebrate five instead of one, I think, has been a terrific update.”

An early role for Ardelean at WDW was as a maintenance choreographer for “Fantasmic” at age 19, she says.

“There are still a handful of performers that I taught the show to who do it nightly,” she says.

“You teach these things in rehearsal rooms, and the first time that these characters are on this steamboat and reveal themselves, they all forget everything we taught them,” Ardelean says.

Part of that is facing a large, live crowd, and part of it is getting lost in the big Disney moment.

“So many of our performers are dreamers. They’ve wanted to do what they’re doing for their whole lives,” she says. “So it’s not only the vastness of the theater, but it’s this recognition of I am a part of something that has been around in Disney culture for a really, really long time.”

When Dreams Come to Life

As darkness falls, dazzling special effects transform the Rivers of America into an epic canvas for this extravagant live show.

Fast asleep, Mickey dreams he is the Sorcerer’s Apprentice. With a wave of his hands, he conducts scenes from Fantasia across enormous screens of water while brilliant sparks burst overhead. Pink elephants, swashbuckling pirates, princesses and more—including memorable scenes from Disney classics such as Aladdin, The Lion King, Tangled and Pirates of the Caribbean —appear on and around the Rivers of America.

When Mickey is suddenly pulled into the Magic Mirror, his dream takes a dark turn. The Evil Queen from Snow White conjures up some of Disney's most dastardly villains! Mickey must use the power of his imagination to vanquish his foes—and save the day.

Featuring a fantastical array of live performers, beloved Disney characters, enhanced special effects, state-of-the-art projections and superb pyrotechnics, this show will wow the entire family.

‘Fantasmic!’ Celebrates 30 Years Today and Gears up for Spectacular Return to Disneyland Park on May 28

Kelsey Lynch, Public Relations Manager, Disneyland Resort

Imagine this – “Fantasmic!,” Disney’s longest-running nighttime spectacular, is celebrating its 30 th anniversary today! That’s right – on this day thirty years ago – May 13, 1992 – “Fantasmic!” premiered to guests at Disneyland park.

“Fantasmic!” is an emotional extravaganza of colorful Disney-animated story scenes, choreographed to an exciting musical score. The waters of the Rivers of America come alive as Mickey Mouse dreams he is the Sorcerer’s Apprentice and faces dastardly villains, using the power of his imagination to save the day. Along the way, fantastic events and images as seen in stories like “Fantasia,” “The Jungle Book,” and more come to life with live performers, character appearances, enhanced special effects and pyrotechnics.

"Fantasmic!" on the Rivers of America at Disneyland park

Did you know? Some updates have been made to “Fantasmic!” at Disneyland park through the years. An enhanced version of the original “Fantasmic!” presentation premiered in 2009, featuring digital projections and the spectacular 45-foot-tall fire-breathing Maleficent dragon. The show then added even more new magic in 2017, including new scenes and featured songs such as “Friend Like Me” and “A Whole New World” from the Walt Disney Animation Studios classic, “Aladdin.”

Since its debut in 1992, “Fantasmic!” has performed nearly 11,000 shows at Disneyland park! And we just can’t wait for this “journey beyond your wildest imagination” to return to the Rivers of America soon, on May 28.

"Fantasmic!" on the Rivers of America at Disneyland park

We are thrilled “Fantasmic!” will be joining the other nighttime spectaculars – “World of Color” at Disney California Adventure park, plus the “Main Street Electrical Parade” and “Disneyland Forever” fireworks spectacular at Disneyland park – upon its return. Just one more way you’ll be able to “ignite the night” at Disneyland Resort!

Good morning the word for today is electrical. The Disneyland winning word

How about some “ Fantasmic “ merchandise??🙏🏻

Was the May 13, 1992, Fantasmic! Premier open to general public or an invitation only event? The reason I’m asking is I’ve seen a video with a commercial advertisement it that says “premiering this Friday at Disneyland.” May 13, 1992 was a Wednesday with Friday being May 15th. Thanks!

Are they still going to do Fantasmic! dining packages and is Fantasmic! going to do virtual queue like World of Color or just regular stand by?

But when will it be back in Orlando?!?? It’s my favorite.

Fantasmic! (Disneyland Version)

Fantasmic! is a nighttime show at Disneyland Park at the Disneyland Resort, Disney's Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World Resort, and previously at Tokyo DisneySea at Tokyo Disney Resort. It features fireworks, characters, live actors, water effects, pyrotechnics, lasers, music, audio-animatronics, searchlights, decorated boat floats, and mist screen projections. The narrative of Fantasmic! is a voyage through Mickey Mouse's imagination that culminates in a battle against the Disney Villains.

Fantasmic! originated at Disneyland in 1992 after Walt Disney Creative Entertainment was asked to create a nighttime spectacular involving water and fireworks to reinvigorate the space in front of the Rivers of America. The area was reworked, including terracing the walkways to accommodate viewing and modifying part of Tom Sawyer Island to allow the show's staged live action segments. The producers employed the resources of Walt Disney Feature Animation and Walt Disney Imagineering.

Synopsis [ ].

Fantasmic! takes place on the waters of the Rivers of America at Disneyland and on a stage across the waterway on Tom Sawyer Island.

The show begins with Mickey Mouse being transported into his dream. He dances and orchestrates various water fountain, pyrotechnic, projection, laser and lighting effects to the show's theme. Mist screens rise from the water, acting as projection surfaces for various scenes from Disney movies. The show then transitions into a jungle scene from The Jungle Book , featuring a 100-foot-long (30 m) puppet of Kaa and three floating barges carrying King Louie and black-lit monkeys (that debuted in the Tokyo version) across the river stage. The song transitions into "Hakuna Matata". The music then segues into a dubstep rendition of "Pink Elephants on Parade" from Dumbo , as animated pink elephants appear onscreen and in the form of performers on the island. The scene then transitions to "Friend Like Me" from Aladdin . Sorcerer Mickey watches the Genie perform tricks. Then they go under the sea as they head into the world of The Little Mermaid and Finding Nemo . A bubble floats by and Jiminy Cricket appears onscreen, searching underwater for Pinocchio. An animated Monstro appears suddenly, accompanied by a heavy musical score as he crashes through water. The sea morphs into the "Sorcerer's Apprentice" flood scene. As Mickey looks around in the dark and asks "What's going on?", a ship caught in a storm appears. Captain Barbossa then appears on the mist screens.

A cannon is fired from Sailing Ship Columbia , portraying the Black Pearl from the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Jack Sparrow, Elizabeth Swann, and other pirates participate in a stunt sequence. The scene ends with fountains that look like explosions and a cannon fired from the Sailing Ship Columbia (In earlier incarnations, the Columbia served as Captain Hook's pirate ship). As the scene concludes, Mickey paints the moon, with silhouettes of Peter Pan and the Darlings flying over it. Mickey's sorcerer hat is painted on the mist screen and the hat turns to clouds as Aladdin and Jasmine are on a physical magic carpet flying through the clouds while a rendition of "A Whole New World" plays. Then the carpet fades away and three small barges arrive carrying Belle and the Beast, Ariel and Prince Eric, and Rapunzel and Flynn Rider, with the accompanying signature melody from each film—"Beauty and the Beast," "Part of Your World," and "I See the Light".

Mickey's dream takes a turn for the worse. The magic mirror appears onscreen and tempts Mickey to enter the darker realms of his imagination. When asked if he has the courage, Mickey accepts the challenge, and the mirror traps Mickey inside. The Evil Queen, disguised as the old hag, calls all the villains to partake in Mickey's nightmare, invoking a riled Ursula who joins the Queen's plot to destroy Mickey. Ursula calls upon Chernabog, who summons deceased spirits. He then summons Maleficent, who threatens Sorcerer Mickey as she transforms herself into an enormous dragon. Onstage, the 45-foot dragon sets the waters ablaze, breathing fire onto the river. Mickey defeats the dragon, destroying the villains in the process.

Tinker Bell then appears, the Mark Twain Riverboat approaches with fireworks, and black and white Mickey from Steamboat Willie appears. Mickey then appears again to conduct a final set of fireworks and water fountains before leaving in a bright blast of fireworks.

Disney's Hollywood Studios version [ ]

The Florida version of the show takes place at the Hollywood Hills Amphitheater, with a rocky mountain and a façade of trees serving as the setting. The narrative of the Walt Disney World version is fairly similar to that of Disneyland's original version, with the show's introduction and conclusion nearly identical. However, there are notable differences throughout the rest of the show.

  • The Fantasia sequence at the beginning of the show transitions into a scene from only The Lion King .
  • The Dumbo , Little Mermaid , Finding Nemo , and Pinocchio sequences are replaced with a bubble montage of Disney animated films presented on the mist screens that includes The Lion King , The Jungle Book , Dumbo , Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs , Alice in Wonderland , Hercules , Pinocchio , Aladdin , Mulan , Moana , Cinderella , Lady and the Tramp , Lilo & Stitch , Fantasia , Tangled , The Princess and the Frog , Bambi , Beauty and the Beast , The Little Mermaid , & Frozen .
  • The onstage battle scene from Pocahontas appears in place of the Peter Pan / Pirates part. In this scene, Governor Ratcliffe and his fellow Englishmen fight against the Native Americans, followed by John Smith. As John Smith climbs to the very top of the mountain, a Native American warrior moves to strike Smith when Pocahontas appears. "Colors of the Wind" plays out the scene on the screens.
  • The climax features more villains than in the previous incarnation. In addition to the Evil Queen, Ursula, Chernabog, and Maleficent, Cruella de Vil from One Hundred and One Dalmatians , Scar from The Lion King , and Frollo from The Hunchback of Notre Dame also appear.
  • The battle between Mickey and the villains, as well as their subsequent defeat, is longer in the Florida version.
  • Snow White and her prince still appear in the princess segment, performing "Someday My Prince Will Come".
  • Mickey still appears in his Brave Little Tailor attire and uses the sword to defeat the dragon.
  • Instead of the Mark Twain Riverboat, the characters appear on board the Steamboat Willie during the finale.

Hollywood Hills Amphitheater [ ]

The Hollywood Hills Amphitheater is a purpose-built seat riverside amphitheatre at the Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park in the Walt Disney World Resort, Florida, that showcases the nighttime spectacular Fantasmic! It is located off of Sunset Boulevard, between The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror and the Beauty and the Beast stage show. The Fantasmic! stage in Florida is significantly larger than Disneyland's, featuring a man-made, 50-foot-tall (15 m) mountain on which Sorcerer Mickey stands and from which the dragon emerges. The amphitheater has 6,900 seats, with room for an additional 3,000 people standing. The moat around the island itself can hold 1,900,000 U.S. gallons (7,200,000 L) of water.

On September 15, 2015, it was announced that Pop Secret would become the official sponsor of Fantasmic! at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Prior to this, Fantasmic! was the only nighttime fireworks show at Walt Disney World without a sponsor, with Wishes gaining sponsorship from Pandora Jewelry in 2014, while IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth was sponsored by General Electric from 1999 to 2003 and sponsored by Siemens since 2005.

On March 12, 2020, this version of Fantasmic! was temporarily closed, due to COVID-19 pandemic in United States. On August 17, 2020, since Walt Disney World reopened in July 2020, during the ongoing on COVID-19 pandemic, the Fantasmic! lagoon has been drained

Alternate show: " Taste Of Fantasmic! " [ ]

The Florida version has a four-minute-long substitute show that plays when inclement weather prohibits the presentation of the regular show. The alternative show does not showcase any of the performers, floats, or puppets due to the dangerous conditions that are posed to the performers because of the possibility of rain accumulating on the stage. Instead the ancillary show is a brief summation of the conventional show; including a fountain display synchronized to "Little April Showers", a sequence integrating the "Night on Bald Mountain" music, and a finale orchestrated with all of the usual pyrotechnics and musical fanfare from the original show's conclusion.

Tokyo DisneySea version [ ]

Fantasmic! debuted at Tokyo DisneySea on April 28, 2011, replacing the BraviSEAmo! show in the Mediterranean Harbor. The show was originally planned to debut on April 23 with the park's 10th Anniversary "Be Magical!" celebration, but was delayed by the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011. Originally, Fantasmic! was planned in 2001 for the park and the story would be themed around Tokyo DisneySea but was scrapped and instead DisneySea Symphony debuted. Many of the barges were reused from Tokyo DisneySea's former nighttime Christmas show “Candelight Reflections” but were reimagined. The Christmas tree barge was used for Mickey's sorcerer hat. This barge would also be used for Tokyo DisneySea's former nighttime Christmas show “Colors of Christmas” (2012-2019). The natural gas line in the harbor and 5 water cannons originally used for BraviSEAmo! were also repurposed.

The show's score was recorded by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios, composed by Don L. Harper, featuring Bruce Healey's theme from the original Fantasmic! at the US parks. The DisneySea version has new scenes and narrative elements, including scenes based on Aladdin , Finding Nemo , and Cinderella , and the original new song "Imagination". This is the only version of Fantasmic! to not have a stationary stage, with the show taking place entirely on barges. All of the characters' dialogue and sung parts were recorded in Japanese by the characters' respective Japanese voice artists.

This version of Fantasmic! closed on February 28, 2020. It was originally scheduled to conclude its run on March 25, 2020, but was moved up due to the extended closure of Tokyo Disney Resort in response to the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan.

On July 20, 2020 the Oriental Land Company announced that Fantasmic! would be replaced by an all-new nighttime spectacular in honor of Tokyo DisneySea's 20th anniversary celebration, called Believe! Sea of Dreams. This brand new show is set to debut on April 1, 2021.

In late September, the Fantasmic! barges were spotted backstage from the monorail being dismantled, so that the barge bases could be reused for Believe! Sea of Dreams.

Mickey Takes Dangerous Fall During Nighttime Performance, Seconds Away From Catastrophe

in Disneyland Resort

Mickey Mouse in Fantasmic!

Fantasmic! is the longest-running nighttime spectacular at Disneyland Resort, delighting Guests with Disney magic with nearly 11,000 performances since its debut on May 13, 1992.

Fantasmic 30th anniversary poster

This journey into Mickey Mouse’s imagination is full of stunts, music, lights, water effects, and pyrotechnics. The show involving the last ones makes it a delicate and dangerous performance. In a recent video, we can see what was seconds away from becoming a catastrophe in front of hundreds of expectant Guests.

In a video shared by Scott Gustin (@ScottGustin), we can see Mickey Mouse running across the Rivers of America stage and slipping, taking a hard fall. Mickey instantly tries to stand up and stumbles again before being able to do so. Finally, Mickey is able to stand up and spread his arms just in time to shoot the fireworks from his hands according to the show’s choreography, preventing a catastrophe by a split second.

It’s like Mickey always says: If you get knocked down, get back up before you shoot fireworks out of your hands.

Viewers were quick to share details on this incident during their visit. User @napobiggun commented that this unfortunate event happened during the 10:30 performance on June 3 , and @SarahSaryan added that the entire crowd gasped the moment Mickey took the fall. @Magical_M_Tours said something needs to be done to correct the slippery surface on the stage, as it is concerning for Guests and especially Cast Members’ safety.

Sarah (@5arahPop) shared another video from a different angle, commenting on the unfortunate event concerned for Mickey.

While Cast Members work hard to make everything at Disneyland and all Disney Parks perfect, there can always be accidents like this. We are glad to see Mickey Mouse was able to continue with the performance just in time to shoot the fireworks as the show’s choreography intended.

The dizzying highs and frustrating lows of playing the world’s most iconic cartoon – Mickey Mouse

Bret Iwan and Mickey Mouse

The official voice of Mickey Mouse has called the job a ‘constant battle’ while giving insight as to just what goes into voicing the most iconic animated character in history.

No pressure, right?

As Disney celebrates its 100th anniversary as a company on October 16, its instantly recognisable mascot has been at the heart for almost as long – Mickey turns 95 on November 18, which was the date he made his debut in the animated short Steamboat Willie in 1928.

Since then, Mickey has been in countless films, Disney Parks parades and shows , inspired his band of Mouseketeers on TV , welcomed younger fans into his popular Playhouse and popped up in several videogames .

And that’s not to mention the merchandise, from soft toys to notebooks, T-shirts, backpacks, watches, specially shaped pencils and pens, and everything in between.

In the history of Mickey so far, there have been four official voices: Walt Disney himself, Jimmy MacDonald, Wayne Allwine and Bret Iwan, who is an artist and former Hallmark illustrator who’s been in the role since 2009.

Mickey Mouse, poster, circa 1932.

Revealing the behind-the-scenes work that goes into maintaining his vocal health so he can always be in good voice for Mickey, Iwan told Metro.co.uk at the launch event for Disney100: The Exhibition at London’s ExCeL that it was ‘a constant battle’ and something he had to be ‘aware of daily’.

‘Different weather conditions can affect me, how much I’ve been talking [and] how loud an environment is. So, when I know I have recording coming up, I’m even more cognisant,’ he explained.

He also shared that he consumes a lot of tea and cough drops, and always warms up – just like an athlete – while driving to the studio for any sessions in the studio.

However, Iwan knows he can’t always give his best Mickey on command.

Walt Disney sits at his sketchpad at the Walt Disney Animation Studios with a picture of Mickey Mouse on March 11, 1955

‘Some days are better than others – you can’t help it, truly. So it’s just kind of rolling with the punches as it were, unfortunately. I wish there was a magic Mickey pill, but there isn’t one yet!’

The 41-year-old, who is the first member of the LGBTQ+ community to lend their vocals to Mickey, calls his job ‘the dream come true I didn’t know I had’ because he never foresaw his ambitions to work for Disney panning out quite as they did.

‘I grew up being fascinated by Walt Disney and his story and being a huge fan of Mickey Mouse in particular. My dream was to be a Disney animator and as such, I set myself on that path to go to art school and to learn to draw for that reason, but I never dreamed that I would get to voice Mickey Mouse,’ he shared.

Mickey Mouse's official voice Bret Iwan on the Burbank lot of Walt Disney Animation Studios

Iwan doesn’t remember the exact moment he figured out he could do a good Mickey Mouse impression, but he does recall being unable to ape Donald Duck as well as his grandfather, who was trying to teach him at a family gathering.

‘I went home that night and I thought, well, if I can’t do Donald, then maybe I’ll try to do Mickey because I like Mickey better anyway. So, I started listening to soundtracks – I had a lot of [Disney theme parks] parade soundtracks on old albums – and I would just talk along with Mickey, as I was listening.’

He eventually became satisfied that he was ‘doing it right’, but stresses that he was ‘never really trying to perfect it intentionally, it was just something I did for fun and something I did for friends’.

‘Occasionally, when we’d go to the theme parks, I’d say, “Oh, boy!” and they’d laugh.’

It took him until he was presented with the chance to try out as an alternative to Wayne Allwine, who was in poor health, to actually consider if he could truly do it for the first time – as it’s not just a question of impersonating Mickey’s globally recognised falsetto.

Mickey Mouse

‘Truly, not until the audition did I really sit down and say, Can I do this? And can I do it for extended amounts of time? And can I act? All these questions I didn’t know!’

‘But I really thought, well, it’s worth a shot. Because why not?’ he laughed.

Disney has been marking its centenary with special celebrations across its parks, limited edition merchandise, re-releases of painstakingly restored classic films from its earlier years like Snow White and Cinderella, and its big Disney 100 exhibition stuffed full of rare props, costumes and pieces from its archives – which is set to tour the world for five years.

At the heart of this, Mickey Mouse has remained the company’s touchstone, mascot and most valuable asset, despite the entertainment giant also owning massive brands like Marvel, Lucasfilm and its Star Wars properties, Pixar, sports network ESPN, National Geographic, ABC and 20th Century Studios.

And that’s not to mention all of its other incredibly popular animated characters such asloveable alien Stitch from Lilo and Stitch, princesses Elsa and Anna from Frozen, and Winnie the Pooh and his Hundred Acre Wood pals.

Walt Disney And Mickey

Tips from a master, Mickey Mouse's official voice Bret Iwan, on how to perfect your Mickey impression

  • Get the right pitch – it’s not high and squeaky – ‘ I was recently reminded of an interview Wayne Allwine did and he says in it that Mickey is a middle-range falsetto. You can go lower, but that’s not quite Mickey, you can go higher, and that’s not quite Mickey either. He sits right in the middle. I think oftentimes people kind of shout and they go as high as possible because they think Mickey is a squeaky mousey voice. I think remembering that it’s a warm, round sound is also very helpful when it comes to Mickey. He’s not too shouty. ‘
  • Personality is key – ‘Beyond just the sound of Mickey, it’s really knowing his personality. It’s knowing who Mickey is and who he isn’t, what he would say and wouldn’t say. ‘
  • So is Mickey’s co-creator (with Ub Iwerks) and original voice, Walt Disney – ‘It’s been said before, Mickey was Walt and Walt was Mickey. In an interview Walt Disney even said, Mickey speaks for me and I still speak for Mickey – so I constantly remember that. It’s really that I’m just filling in for the boss. ‘

Why is that Mickey has managed to maintain his popularity and relevance over nearly the full 100 years of the Walt Disney Company’s mighty existence ? Iwan has a theory.

‘I think the answer lies in his simplicity. Walt Disney said he was a small personality, assigned to the purpose of laughter and I think that still holds true,’ the voice star suggested.

‘Mickey is just a warm, lovable character. He’s not faultless, he has his quirks, he’s a reflection of all of us and I think we see ourselves in him. And there’s something very appealing about this consistent character that, for most of us, has been around our entire lives.

‘His goodness, his joy, is comforting. And again those simplistic qualities – not trying to overcomplicate Mickey, but just letting him be this simple mouse, this simple person – really helps him transcend throughout history, whatever is going on.’

Iwan cites that as the factor that will probably ‘drive Disney into the future’ too.

Mickey Mouse at the Walt Disney World Resort Reopening in July 2020

Taking on a role that sees him recreate such a well-recognised voice has seen Iwan – who also painted the official portrait of Mickey in honour of his 95th birthday – come under fire from a small section of the Disney fanbase, the passion of whom results in some extremely exacting standards and preferences. They take things very (maybe too) seriously, and Iwan is not immune to their criticism.

‘I think one of the negatives of being an artist is that we put a lot of ourselves into our work, and that goes whether I’m painting or drawing Mickey or voicing Mickey. So yes, there have been times when I’ve read a comment or heard a criticism that does dig deep, because I’m highly invested in this character,’ he shared.

Iwan also insists that he is simply ‘very grateful’ to be ‘a small blip in Mickey’s grand timeline’.

‘So I just want to make sure that I’m giving to Mickey, what I admire in those who voiced Mickey prior to me. Of course I’ve had criticisms – I myself am my own worst critic, trust me. I’ve listened back to several projects and thought, “Oh, I could have done better or I should have done better.”’

Bret Iwan, the official voice of Mickey Mouse, and Mickey Mouse

He also admits that ‘there’s days when the voice just isn’t where I’d like it to be’ and he has heard that on the final edit of a project.

‘But hopefully, throughout all of those little nitpicky things, Mickey remains Mickey and his character, personality and appeal rises above any of those technical things,’ he added.

Iwan also takes the criticism onboard, and as a way to try and improve his Mickey.

‘I take each project as a learning curve, so if something has been received maybe not as well as I’d hoped it would be, I take that to heart – and hopefully let it inform the next project I’m working on.’

Having been in voice and character as Mickey for almost 15 years, Iwan has been involved in may projects, including Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Have a Laugh!, several iterations of the popular Kingdom Hearts videogame franchise, as well as newer game Disney Dreamlight Valley and current TV show Mickey Mouse Funhouse.

Mickey Mouse's Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

Iwan has a hard time singling out his favourite project among the ones he’s done so far, but collaborators certainly make an impact.

‘Again, referencing how big a fan I was when I was a kid, I’ve had the chance to work with people I’ve admired for so long, whether that be Imagineers, or animators like Eric Goldberg. I’m a huge fan of his and so anytime I get to work on a project that he’s directing or animating is mind-blowing.’

For his part, Pocahontas co-director Goldberg , who has also been animating supervisor for some of Disney’s most iconic characters, including Aladdin’s Genie and Phil from Hercules, calls Iwan ‘fantastic to work with’.

He told Metro.co.uk and other press in a roundtable for the Mickey: The Story of a Mouse on Disney Plus last November: ‘He is just one of those guys who gets the character – you don’t have to explain to Bret who Mickey Mouse is, he breathes the character, and so it’s very easy and fun to work with him.’

Animator and director Eric Goldberg with Bret Iwan, official voice of Mickey Mouse, at the D100 Exbition VIP Launch Event in London

When it comes to directing him in the role, as he did for that project, Goldberg explained: ‘What you’re looking for more is the nuance that you want for what Mickey has to say at certain points to get the narrative across. It’s not about you saying, “Oh, you’re doing that wrong. That doesn’t sound like Mickey.”

‘It’s more about what are the shadings that you can give me? I love working with Bret.’

Iwan’s dulcet tones can also be heard across the Disney Parks , including in California’s Disneyland and Walt Disney World in Florida.

‘I tend to really love doing things for the parks because those are projects that I myself can then go visit and watch the audience respond to and react to in a way that you can’t always get with an animated TV show,’ he told Metro.co.uk .

It was particularly special for him when he worked on the show Fantasmic!, which runs at the original Disneyland Park and Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida.

Mickey Mouse fires his fan-favorite hand sparklers during the first night of 'Fantasmic' returning to Disney's Hollywood Studios on Nov. 3, 2022, in Lake Buena Vista, Florida

‘To me, that was a great, quintessential Mickey performance that Wayne Allwine originated, and when they updated the show I got to re-record the lines and add some additional content.

‘I’d be lying if I said I didn’t cry when I saw it the first time because it was a very full circle moment to think of my seven to 10-year-old self. If you’d told me back then that I got to be a part of this magical journey, I would not have believed it! But the magic keeps coming, I’m very grateful for it.’

For voicing Disney’s most famous character, Iwan is able to fly under the radar without much recognition – even when visiting the theme parks and surrounded by some of the brand’s biggest fans.

‘Believe it or not, it happens very rarely. But the times it does, I’m always shocked honestly, I’m always humbled. I’m like, “You know who I am?” Because don’t get me wrong, Mickey is the celebrity and Mickey is the star. I just get to stand alongside him occasionally.’

D100 Exbition VIP Launch Event

As a fan himself, he calls any interactions ‘wonderful’ as ‘it’s like we get to share in the fandom’.

‘But also, to hear how much people appreciate the stuff I’ve worked on or the ways that I’ve contributed is very motivating to me. It’s inspiring to keep going to know that the stuff you’ve done is well received – there’s nothing better than that.

So, any chance I get to interact with fans, I’m always just kind of like, “Hey, it’s a friend!”

And who doesn’t want to be Mickey’s pal?

Disneyland's Fantasmic Performance Canceled After Mickey Set Maleficent On Fire

No one was injured by the blaze, but performances of the disneyland night time show have been canceled today as well..

Disney hopes that those who attend Disneyland leave the theme parks with fun experiences and memories that stick with attendees for. And that’s... technically what happened last night at Disneyland Park , because the Maleficent dragon animatronic quite literally went up in flames. And the culprit was none other than one Mickey Mouse.

During the second Fantasmic performance of the night, Mickey fights the dragon from Sleeping Beauty and blasts sparks at her head. Those flames began to hit Tom Sawyer Island down below, then the parts of the dragon itself. And as you can see in the video below, it didn’t take long for the animatronic to be set ablaze, and eventually its own head becomes engulfed in fire. The show then came to an early end to evacuate those in the western section of the park.

Some of speculated that a leak is what caused the fire; in other videos of the event, it’s possible to see some fluid leaking out of Maleficent’s mouth before Mickey’s sparks hit it. Those speaking to WDWT further allege that the dragon collapsed when Anaheim fire crews were attempting to extinguish the fire, and it’s possible the entire stage area for the nighttime spectacular event collapsed during the incident. Per the Anaheim Fire Department, no injuries were reported from staff or attendees.

This morning, a Disneyland spokesperson released a statement to news anchor Landon McReynolds confirming that the safety of the cast and park guests from Tom Sawyer Island. “Anaheim Fire & Rescue quickly responded, and the fire was extinguished,” said Disney. “Due to smoke and wind, attractions near the island were safely evacuated of any guests, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time.” Performances of Fantasmic previously planned for today appear to have been canceled, according to Disney’s own events schedule for the park .

Disneyland version (1992 canon)

The show is located on the waters of the Rivers of America at Disneyland and on a stage across the waterway. A tavern and tall trees act as a backdrop for the show. To begin, lights around the Rivers of America fade and a female narrator introduces the show.

In the Disneyland Version the narrator says "Welcome to Fantasmic! Tonight, our friend and host Mickey Mouse uses his vivid imagination to create magical imagery for all to enjoy. Nothing is more wonderful than the imagination, for in a moment, you can experience a beautiful fantasy or an exciting adventure. But beware, nothing is more powerful than the imagination, for it can also expand your greatest fears into an overwhelming nightmare. Are the powers of Mickey's incredible imagination strong enough and bright enough to withstand the evil forces that invade Mickey's dream? You are about to find out. For we now invite you to join Mickey, and experience Fantasmic! … a journey beyond your wildest imagination."

The show begins with Mickey in formal attire directing a water show on the river. The show's signature water projection screens are activated, onto which animation from the Sorcerer's Apprentice sequence from the film Fantasia . Musical scores from "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" and the "Imagination" theme accompany the animation as Mickey conducts animated shooting stars pyrotechnics launched from the six pyrotechnic barges on the river.

The animation then blends with live performers interpreting different flowers.

The lighting and music change to a jungle beat, and a 100-foot-long (30 m) puppet of Kaa , the snake from The Jungle Book , makes its way across the island with beams of light firing from his eyes. Accompanying this scene are three floating barges carrying King Louie and black-lit monkeys across the river stage.

The music segues to a contemporary rendition of " Pink Elephants on Parade " from Dumbo , as animated pink elephants appear onscreen and in the form of performers on the island. The elephants then seem to be puppets dancing on strings, which serves to transition into a sequence based on Pinocchio . Three large puppets are manipulated by nine performers with fiber-optic "strings" stretching 30 feet above the puppets.

Onscreen animation shows Jiminy Cricket underwater searching for Pinocchio. An animated Monstro the Whale interacts with live splash effects on the river. The story line progresses as Mickey notices his dream becoming darker.

[1] [2] Peter Pan and Captain Hook sword fight aboard the Sailing Ship Columbia. A concussion cannon is fired from Sailing Ship Columbia , which portrays Captain Hook 's pirate ship. Hook, Smee, Peter Pan , Wendy , and pirates participate in a stunt sequence as the ship makes its pass. Following the ship is an articulated crocodile barge, with the sound of a ticking clock emanating from its tail.

Snow White and her Prince, Ariel and Prince Eric, and Belle and the Beast appear on three floating stages (transformed since the Jungle scene earlier) on the river, dancing to a medley of each princess' signature song, accompanied by lighting and water effects.

The show enters its villain segment, as the Evil Queen from Snow White appears on stage, calling for her magic mirror — which appears onscreen in animated form. The mirror informs the Queen that the three princesses are fairer than she, and that "in Mickey's imagination, beauty and love will always survive."

In anger, she moves to her cauldron, where the Queen transforms into the Hag from Snow White. The hag summons "forces of evil" to transform Mickey Mouse's dream into a "nightmare Fantasmic."

Ursula , from The Little Mermaid sings and joins the plot against Mickey as her two pet eels, Flotsam and Jetsam, glide across the river.

Onscreen, the face of Ursula transforms into Chernabog from Fantasia . Animation from the "Night on Bald Mountain" sequence from Fantasia accompanies Mussorgsky 's score.

A pyrotechnic burst of flames announces Maleficent , from Sleeping Beauty , beginning the climactic showdown sequence. Maleficent rises 30 feet from the stage and transforms into a dragon onscreen. The animation gives way to a 45-foot animatronic dragon, who rises from the stage before breathing fire onto the river, which utilizes fire-on-water effects.

Mickey appears as the Brave Little Tailor and uses a sword to destroy Maleficent's dragon form. As the dragon screams, the villains who have appeared are also destroyed onscreen, and the sequence ends with a pyrotechnic burst from the river.

Following an appearance by Tinker Bell , the Mark Twain Riverboat crosses the stage, piloted by a black and white Mickey Mouse, dressed in attire from Steamboat Willie . Approximately 50 Disney characters dance on the ship in a ribbon routine. The sequence is accompanied by searchlights, fountains, and pyrotechnic effects.

Then in a flash of light, Mickey appears on top of the tavern as Sorcerer Mickey, and "conducts" laser beams , fireworks, and other lighting effects that span the length of the river stage. With a flash, he disappears from atop the Tavern and re-appears center stage, resuming his formal atti.re. Mickey says to the audience, "Some imagination, huh?" and disappears in a flash. A final burst of pyrotechnics is accompanied by searchlights placed around the tavern and stage.

Disneyland version (2017 fanon)

Fantasmic! transpires on the waters of the Rivers of America at Disneyland and on a stage across the waterway on Tom Sawyer Island .

The show begins with a faint musical note that swells into a lush fanfare, revealing Mickey Mouse onstage. Two Light towers come out from the ground where Mickey is transported into his dream. He then dances and orchestrates various water fountain, pyrotechnic, projection, laser, and lighting effects to the show's theme, until bringing up the mist screens, which fades into the " Sorcerer's Apprentice " sequence from Fantasia . From there, the falling stars of the scene bloom into flowers. Mickey then appears on the mist screens where he is standing in front of the sunset from the Lion King . T he show then transitions into a jungle scene from The Jungle Book , featuring a 100-foot-long (30 m) puppet of Kaa and three floating barges carrying King Louie and black-lit monkeys across the river stage. Then the song transitions into Hakuna Matata .The music then segues into an dubstep rendition of " Pink Elephants on Parade " from Dumbo , as animated pink elephants appear onscreen and in the form of performers on the island. The scene then transitions to a " Friend Like Me " from Aladdin . Sorcerer Mickey watches Genie perform all his tricks. Then they go under the sea as they head into the world of The Little Mermaid and Finding Nemo . Then a Bubble floats and Jiminy Cricket appears onscreen underwater searching for Pinocchio . An animated Monstro appears suddenly, accompanied by a heavy musical score as he crashes through water. The sea morphs into the "Sorcerer's Apprentice" flood scene. As Mickey looks around in the dark and asks "What's going on?", a ship caught in a storm appears. Captain Barbosa appears on the mist screens as he answers Mickey's question.

[3] A cannon is fired from Sailing Ship Columbia , portraying the Black Pearl from the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Jack Sparrow , Elizabeth Swann , and other pirates participate in a stunt sequence. The scene ends with fountains that look like explosions and a cannon fired from the Sailing Ship Columbia. As the scene concludes, Mickey's sorcerer hat is painted on the mist screen and the hat turns to clouds as Aladdin and Jasmine are on a physical magic carpet flying through the clouds while a rendition of A Whole New World plays. Then the carpet fades away and three small barges arrive carrying Belle and the Beast , Ariel and Prince Eric and Rapunzel and Flynn Ryder , with the accompanying signature melody from each film—" Beauty and the Beast ," " Part of Your World ," and " I See the Light ".

The music takes on an ominous tone as Mickey's dream takes a turn for the worse. The magic mirror comes up —which appears onscreen in animated form. Angered by Mickey's optimistic imagination, the mirror traps Mickey inside of the mirror and the old hag calls all the villains to partake in Mickey's nightmare which invokes a riled Ursula , (from The Little Mermaid ) who ecstatically joins the Queen's plot to destroy Mickey. Ursula calls upon Chernabog (from Fantasia ) who summons deceased spirits. He summons Maleficent (from Sleeping Beauty ) who threatens Sorcerer Mickey, as she transforms herself into an enormous dragon. On stage, the 45-foot dragon sets the waters ablaze breathing fire onto the river. Mickey faces the dragon, claiming that he is in control of his imagination, and defeats the dragon, destroying the villains in the process.

Everything is silent, until Tinker Bell appears. Magical stars sparkle in the tavern as the Mark Twain Riverboat approaches. A spark of pyrotechnics ignite from The Mark Twain as all of Tom Sawyer's Island is lit up in rainbow colors, revealing black and white Mickey in Steamboat Willie attire. The vessel glides past the audience, carrying several dozens Disney characters as a celebratory atmosphere prevails. With another flash, Mickey appears atop the highest point of the tavern as the Sorcerer's Apprentice as he controls a final series of water, fireworks, laser and light orchestrations. Mickey disappears and reappears onstage in his tuxedo from the beginning of the show, bidding the audience farewell and disappears once again in a bright blast of fireworks.

Disney-MGM Studios version (1998 canon), Disney Studios (Walt Disney World Canada) version (fanon) & Walt Disney’s Hollywood Studios Tennessee version (fanon)

As the lights fade, a female narrator gives a brief welcome and mentions of the powers of imagination. A very faint musical note is heard, swelling and growing into a dramatic chord in the complete darkness. Once the chord strikes, two tall columns rise on stage left and right, with roving spotlights, until finally Mickey appears centre stage. He conducts various water fountain effects, until bringing up the giant water-mist screens, which, in conjunction with a few flares , fade into the famous Sorcerer's Apprentice scene from Fantasia .

From there, the falling stars of the Sorcerer's Apprentice scene morph into flowers, and after a brief interlude, into a jungle scene. Elephants , giraffes , monkeys , birds , ostriches , rhinos , crocodiles , and cheetahs begin to herd in the mountain. Neon animals make noise and dance around on the island while Rafiki and monkeys do a dance on floats traveling across the water. Simba and Nala from The Lion King romp together. Next, a large Bubble Montage takes place, where scenes and characters from major classic animated Disney movies appear in floating bubbles. Scenes from The Lion King , The Jungle Book ( Florida & Tennessee version), Dumbo , Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs , Alice in Wonderland ( Florida & Tennessee version), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Tennessee & Canada version), Hercules , Pinocchio , Aladdin , Mulan ( Florida & Tennessee version), Sleeping Beauty (Tennessee & Canada version), The Sword of the Stone (Canada version), Cinderella , Lady and the Tramp ( Florida version), 101 Dalmatians (Tennessee & Canada version), Fantasia , Bambi , Beauty and the Beast , and The Little Mermaid pop and float across the screen.

A loud cannon blast erupts. Live characters re-enact battle scenes from the film, Pocahontas . Governor John Ratcliffe and his fellow Englishmen fight against the Native Americans, followed by John Smith . As John Smith climbs to the very top of the mountain, a Native American warrior moves to strike Smith when Pocahontas arrives; the water screens spring back up, and Grandmother Willow appears, with a quote from the movie; the lights dim on the battle, and the " Colors of the Wind " scene plays out on the screens. The show then moves into classic dancing scenes with Princess Aurora and Prince Phillip , Cinderella and Prince Charming , Megara and Hercules (Tennessee & Canada), and Princess Jasmine and Aladdin .

Three small floats now arrive, with Belle and the Beast , Ariel and Prince Eric , and Snow White and her Prince each contained in their own float. As each float reaches the centre, the spotlight shines on it, with the accompanying signature melody from each movie — " Beauty and the Beast ," " Part of Your World ," and " Some Day My Prince Will Come ", respectively.

The music takes on an ominous tone as Mickey's dream takes a turn for the worse. The Wicked Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on stage, calling for her magic mirror — which appears onscreen in animated form. The mirror informs the Queen that the three princesses are fairer than she, and that "in Mickey's imagination, beauty and love will always survive." Seeing a magic lamp, Mickey rubs it, assuming it will help him . Unfortunately, Jafar is transformed into a genie and calls upon Hades ( Hercules ) and Chernabog ( Fantasia ) with the latter summoning the spirits from the dead.

in Tennessee 2015, they added Dr Faciller, Mother Gothel and Prince Hans

[4] [5] Steamboat Willie on stage, Mickey encounters Maleficent , who transforms into a 40-foot-tall fire-breathing dragon that sets the waters ablaze. Guests as far as halfway back in the theater can feel the heat from the fire. Mickey, now in his Brave Little Tailor outfit, manages to create a wall of water around the island, smothering the flames and defeating the dragon. He destroys the villains using the power of his imagination and his sword (similar to The Sword in the Stone ). Maleficent also dies as the water splashes with a large firework bang. All is quiet, until Tinker Bell appears and flies to restore the mountain. Magical stars sparkle in the mountain as Steamboat Willie approaches. Then a spark of pyrotechnics ignite from the riverboat, revealing Mickey controlling the boat.

As it glides past the audience, various Disney characters appear aboard Steamboat Willie, dancing with golden streamers. A celebratory atmosphere prevails amid a flurry of fireworks. With another flash of pyrotechnics, Mickey appears atop the highest point of the mountain as the Sorcerers Apprentice as fireworks, fire, and water light up the stage. As the finale concludes, Mickey disappears from the top of the mountain with another spark of pyrotechnics, a small explosion in the main stage and simultaneously reappears in his shiny tuxedo suit. A small applause from the crowd and Mickey says, "Some imagination, huh? Ha ha!" Pyrotechnics shoot out of the main stage and barges on the moat, he vanishes one last time to the final notes of the music while a cone of lights and searchlights bright up the stage for a few seconds. Tokyo DisneySea version (canon)

The show begins with the tune of the "Sorcerer's Apprentice" as out of the stars, Sorcerer Mickey emerges on a tower of stars in a comet. The new theme song, "Imagination" plays as Mickey conducts the water fountains and images of different characters appear on the tower. The music shifts into the traditional Fantasmic! theme and weaves into "Sorcerer's Apprentice" as Mickey conducts the stars and sea and calls on the Magic Brooms. The waters rise and Ariel enters vocalizing " Part of Your World ", as Crush and his seaturtle pack from Finding Nemo swim in the background. The dancing fish from Fantasia' s "Nutcracker Suite" also appear as does Jiminy Cricket in his bubble, which pops and fills the scene with bubbles.

Mickey's eyes appear confused in the dark and the show enters as the show progresses into a jungle environment. While Tarzan and Jane Porter appear swinging on the projection tower, floats featuring giant inflatable versions of Baloo , King Louie , Pumbaa and a young Simba appear along with a floating Kaa . A medley of music from Tarzan , The Jungle Book , and The Lion King plays, eventually building up into the " Circle of Life " scene.

However, when Rafiki is about to hold up Simba, Stitch appears instead (similar to the " Inter-Stitch-als ") and the music transitions into an electric guitar version of "Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride" with Stitch conducting the water while Angel pilots Stitch's red speeder shooting plasma blasts. Mickey appears again, accompanied by the show's theme song and " When You Wish Upon A Star " and sets the stage for an appearance by the Genie singing " Friend Like Me " as well as the scene of " A Whole New World ". As Aladdin and Jasmine fly off, the music segues into Cinderella and a sequence based on the Disney Princesses .

After the Princess medley, Mickey encounters the Magic Mirror. Mickey asks the Magic Mirror if he's the greatest sorcerer of all and the Mirror tells him to look closer and deeper into the mirror. The Mirror and the Evil Queen then cast a spell trapping Mickey inside, allowing the villains to take control, each one appearing within the mirror. The Queen (now as the Old Hag) calls on the assistance of Ursula (singing " Poor Unfortunate Souls ") and Chernabog (whose appearance is accompanied with a composition of " Night on Bald Mountain " and " Hellfire "). The Queen laughs at the power of Mickey's imagination and the last villain emerges from the mirror: Maleficent who shows the power of her imagination by turning into her dragon form. Mickey defeats Maleficent with his magic wand and the power of his imagination. He falls back into his sleeping body and with a wave of Tinker Bell 's wand, the show moves into the finale, with a reprise of the song and many of the show's other characters appearing on the barges, including classic Mickey and company. The barges stop and Sorcerer Mickey reappears on the tower, clad in a glowing, white, fiber-optic reflecting robe to conduct the final pyrotechincs and fountains as the music builds. Mickey then remarks "Some Imagination, huh?" and disappears, with a few notes of the "Sorcerer's Apprentice" theme and the final fanfare. The tower takes on the appearance of the Sorcerer's Hat and the exit music plays.

Sydney Disneyland version (fanon)

This version includes a new storyline, new animation, and the Murphy Dragon being an different being, but still following Mickey in his world of imagination and battling the Murphy Dragon.

The show opens with a storybook opening being projected onto a water screen with Sorcerer's Apprentice music in the background. The pages shows an illustration of Mickey as the Sorcerer's Apprentice, then the page magically flips. The pages then flip faster, faster, and faster until it turns into a moving cartoon of what is Mickey getting a magical wand which belonged to his master, Yen Sid. Mickey then casts powerful magic, then suddenly physically appears (as an actor) on the Sorcerer Tower (the stage for the show which is similar to the tower for Tokyo DisneySea). Mickey then conducts water, light, and fireworks to the new theme song "Dreams".

Mickey then accidently floats out of his dream, not knowing even knowing that his actual self is sleeping. He then sees the Magic Mirror from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and asks for what he should do. The Magic Mirror says that he should go to eleven different dreams and get these objects from these dreams: an apple, a glass slipper, a spinning wheel, a conch shell, a rose, a genie's lamp, a compass, a sword, a frog, a golden magical flower, and a bow with arrows. So Mickey goes into these eleven dreams which belonged to Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel, and Merida. As soon as he got all of the things he needed, he went back to the Magic Mirror. The Magic Mirror chuckled and gathered all the items and put them in a bag. The bag suddenly turned big and looked crowded. Then the Magic Mirror disentegrated and the mirror presented all of the villains from the following princess' own movies and more Disney stuff. They put a cast on Mickey and the villains switch places with Mickey being in the mirror. Mickey opens the crowded bag and it turns out that the items turned into Disney heroes, heroines, princes, and princesses. Now Mickey and the rest can never be awakened. Everybody tries to use their imagination to comfort themselfs, which then leads to clipshow-like scene set to Tokyo DisneySea's theme song for Fantasmic! , "Imagination".

Hours later in the mirror, the mirror suddenly breaks and everybody escapes. It turns out that Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Mickey's half-brother, and Yen Sid came to rescue them (by them sleeping). Now all Disney villains (led by Pete the Ghost of Christmas Future from Mickey's Christmas Carol and the Wizard from Mickey's 60th Birthday ) found out and are in a very angry rage. All of the villains use their power to kill Mickey, but they all end in death and all of them die. But, the second before Maleficent dies, she transforms into a dragon. Mickey tries to kill the dragon, but he couldn't. So Oswald, Yen Sid, and the princesses use their powers to help Mickey kill the dragon with the power of believing. The dragon has been killed and the princesses and other good characters return to their own worlds, along with Oswald and Yen Sid. Mickey, however stays in his dream a little longer and starts imagining a celebration.

The celebration sets into the tune of the new ending song, "Believe". Then, it turns to "Dreams", then "Imagination", and finally the original Fantasmic! theme music. The celebration magically turns into the same storybook in the beginning and the cartoon shows Mickey putting back Yen Sid's wand with the pages turning more slowly and, more slowly, and more slowly, until it stands still showing a blank page. Then, Mickey is on the Sorcerer Tower remarking "Some Imagination, huh?" with a pen righting on the page. The storybook displayed on the water screen closes and it bursts into color, with water fountains and lights going in circles and fireworks coming out of Sorcerer Tower with the melody tune of Fantasmic! as the final music track. Then the show ends.

Then fireworks burst from the castle and the moat, and the show is done.

Disney World Montana version (fanon)

The show begins as Mickey Mouse grabs a magical stopwatch and sets it back to the 80's period, and he is transported to the 1980's era.

Mickey Mouse is transported by the stopwatch again, but this time, he is transported to the 90's era.

Upon his arrival, he encounters a criminal kingpin called Taurus Bulba, who has kidnapped a young girl named Gosalyn Waddlemeyer, with his henchmen Hammerhead Hannigan, Hoof and Mouth holding the hero Darkwing Duck at gunpoint.

The show ends with Mickey Mouse being transported back to his own time. "I think this watch has a few kinks in it, but...oh, well. It was fun. We all had a blast from the past! I will see ya real soon!"

Italy DisneySea version (fanon)

The show begins with the "Sorcerer's Apprentice" tune as Sorcerer Mickey emerges on a tower of stars in a comet. The theme song "Imagination" (from Tokyo DisneySea) plays in the background as Mickey conducts the water and images of different characters appear on the hat tower. The music shifts into the traditional Fantasmic! theme and weaves into "Sorcerer's Apprentice" as Mickey conducts the stars and calls on the Magic Brooms. Afterwards, we enter an interstellar starfield as Peter Pan and the Darling children appear soaring on the projection tower with Luca and Giulia gliding on Da Vinci-style planes in the background.

Mickey's eyes appear in the dark, dazed and confused as the show enters a jungle environment. While Tarzan and Jane enter the show swinging on a projection tower, floats featuring giant inflatable versions of Baloo, King Louie, Pumbaa, and Simba as a cub appear along with a floating Kaa. Music from Tarzan, The Jungle Book, and The Lion King play in the background, all leading up to the "Circle of Life" scene. When Rafiki is about to hold up Simba though, Stitch appears instead (in a similar vein to the Inter-Stitch-als) and the music transforms into an electric guitar version of "Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride" with Stitch conducting the water and Angel piloting Stitch's red speeder, which shoots plasmablasts.

The waters rise and Ariel enters the show, vocalizing "Part of Your World", while Crush and his seaturtle pack from Finding Nemo swim in the background. The dancing fish from Fantasia's "Nutcracker Suite" and Jiminy Cricket also appear. Then a golden lamp floats down to the bottom of the projection tower, setting the stage for an appearance by the Genie who sings "Friend Like Me" as well as the "Whole New World" sequence. As Aladdin and Jasmine fly off, the music segues into a sequence based on the Disney Princesses.

After the Princess medley, Mickey encounters the Magic Mirror, who tempts him into entering unseen realms of his imagination. When asked if he has the courage, Mickey accepts the challenge, and the mirror traps him inside, allowing the villains to take control, each one appearing within the mirror. The Evil Queen calls on the assistance of Ursula (who sings "Poor Unfortunate Souls"), and Chernabog (whose appearance is accompanied by a mix of Night on Bald Mountain and "Hellfire"). The villains laugh at the power of Mickey's imagination as Maleficent emerges from the mirror and shows Mickey the power of her imagination by turning into her dragon form. Sorcerer Mickey defeats Maleficent (along with Chernabog, Ursula and the Evil Queen) with the power of his imagination.

Mickey falls back into his sleeping body and with a wave of Tinker Bell's wand, the show moves into the finale, with a reprise of the song and many of the good characters appearing on the barges, including regular Mickey. The barges stop and Sorcerer Mickey reappears on the tower, clad in a flowing white robe to conduct the final fireworks and fountains as the theme builds up to it's thrilling conclusion. Mickey bids the audience farewell and disappears, with a few little notes from "Sorcerer's Apprentice" and the final fanfare playing in the background. The tower takes on the appearance of the sorcerer's hat and the exit music plays.
