For most of us, school holidays are the highlights of the year. Without the term breaks,the prospect of a whole year of school will put a damper on any teenagers’ spirit. Most students pursue recreational activities that are usually neglected during school days.

Besides allowing a break from the monotony of school,holidays also rejuvenate so that we will be energised at the commencement of a new term. It give teachers and students an oppurtunity to relax and recuperate too.As for me,this holidays give me a sense of realisation on parental love and service to the community.

During the holidays,I had a golden opportunity to visit Seri Cahaya Old Folks Home which is located in a stone’s thrown away distance from my school. This place is meant to keep and look after parents that have been abandoned by their irresponsible kids who do not even know how to appreciate things that their parents have done for them when they are small and helpless. My class teacher had organised this excursion in order to cultivate some noble values among us especially the heart to service and parents’ love.On the respective day, all of my classmates gathered at the school compound.

They were exuberant and their spirit was well potrayed through their countenance. The sun rose majestically and the golden rays of the sun brought much warmth and cheer. We depart from our school at 9. 00 a.

m. and after 15 minutes travel,we arrived at the respective home. The old folks casted a glance towards us with their smiling face as if inviting us to their `permanent’ home. They looked at us with some kind of expectation and grieve.

I looked into their old and tired eyes,they seemed to be begging me for company.After greeted them,we started to clean the surrounding of the home. As the well known saying many hands make light work,we accomplished our task in a short period of time. Due to this we were able to chit chat with old folks and share our love and happiness with them.

They were very friendly and caring. Some of them reminisced their life experiences and betrayal of their children which made our heart to melt. Yet some folks still love their children though they left their parents remorselessly. One of my classmate,who is indeed a hilarios guy cracked numerous jokes.

The folks burst into laughter and they were elated ecstatic. During lunch,we served some delicious food which we brought along for the folks. I was on cloud nine as I got the opputunity to feed those who were bedridden with water or food. Tears rolled down on my cheeks when they extended their arms toward me to hug and show their gratitude.

After the hearty meal, we entertained the folks by singing and dancing. Some of the old folks did not miss the chance to show their talent. We were dumbfounded when one of the folks perfomed a rock dance.Later,we had a photo session with the folks for fond memories.

By the time we left the home,the happiness started to fade from the old folks’ faces. We reluctantly left the home. It was a enjoyable day and I got to learn some moral values from this trip. First and foremost,we should appreciate our parents and recognize their role in bringing us up.

It is meaningless to worship God without first revering one’s own parents. However, nowadays many children are dumping their aged parents by sending them to the old folks’ home due to different kinds of reasons as well as excuses.Younger society views the aged people as useless and frail. The elderly needs our care and love and we should endeavour to do our bit to cheer them up.

We should not dump our aged parents . As children, we are definitely responsible for the care of our elderly parents. Children have a moral obligation to make sure their parents are well taken care of. Didn’t they do that for us? Our parents clothed, fed and made sure we did not have to go through the trials and tribulations they went through during their youth.

Now it is the time to repay all that parents have done for their children.Parents make enormous sacrifices for the well being of the babies brought into the world. This is something that really is not up for discussion. It is the right thing to do because once we are in that position we would like the our children to take care of us.

However old they may be and howsoever difficult our condition may be,we should try to make our parents happy as far as it is possible for us. We should feed them even if we resort to begging. Bear all hardships to look after our parents. We should also never cause pain to our parents under any circumstance.

Never do anything due to which our parents may shed tears. Parents have given us their blood,wealth ,love and care,taking great pains. Because of them we have come up in life. An ungrateful person is worse than a beast.

Bear in mind no benefits accrues from worshipping God without first serving our parents with compassion,love and devotion. Furthermore, we should indulge in community services. Community service is a very important factor when it comes to bettering your society. Our life will be sanctified only when we help the poor,the sick and the down trodden.

By rendering service to society ,we can alleviate the sufferings of the people and bring about transformation in their lives. As the saying goes hands that serve are better than lips that pray. The old-age home was situated in the outskirts of the city and was close to the national highway. Srishti Drishti Care Organization, located near the Chamcham Bazaar, Haveli Nagar is a home for both orphans and aged people. Newborn babies are also left there. Visitors are allowed only for fixed hours from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm on all the working days.

On the 11th of August, to celebrate my seventeenth birthday, I went to Shri Krishna Old Age Home, 5 km away from Sarojini Market, Noida with my parents.

Shri Krishna Old Age Home provides shelter and food to nearly two hundred aged people-both men and women. Every year, I visit some nonprofit organization or nearby slum localities to help those who need help, love and affection. I spent quality time with them. And it gives me immense happiness.

We visited the old age home at 10:30 am. It was an overwhelming experience for us. Initially, it was quite difficult to digest the reality that we witnessed the elderly parents not taken care of and being neglected and eliminated from their families, societies and communities as well. We had an amazing time by singing songs and narrating jokes, narratives and stories from real lives. The people looked blissful in our company. A donation was also given by our family for improvement of the conditions of the organization. I was grateful for having such an indelible memory on my birthday.

I had an opportunity to visit a local old age home as one of my cousins was a junior volunteer for a local non-profit organization. To mark the annual day of International Service Day, all the local people were invited to provide voluntary services to the helpless and hopeless hearts.

The old age home was situated in the outskirts of the city and was a three storey building. The walls of the home were old and were poorly maintained. Nearly 342 aged people dwell in that building.

As we entered the building, all of them were involved in many tasks such as watching television, knitting, sipping tea and gossiping as well as cooking lunch for the group. We distributed some food packets and blankets among them. They shared their emotions with us, which left us feeling shattered and nostalgic.

The visit was a life-changing experience as it was filled with many emotions and sentiments along with a bunch of valuable life-lessons. The old age homes are the last hopes of old people to lead better lives.

I would like to write this post about a visit to Old Folks home since last Sunday, but I can’t find time to do it. So much things are going around, so much time are spent outside and I admit that I become tired every day especially when the evening comes. Thus, when I am sitting in front of my mac book and wanting to start writing, I will stare at the screen blankly for few minutes (around 10 – 12 mins) before typing the words. However, I keep trying at least to write as much as I can. Likewise this post was written on today and probably on tomorrow night.

A visit to Old Folks home was one of my company’s agenda and was arranged by HR since few weeks ago. The visit itself was scheduled on 31 July 2010. Prior to the few weeks before the day, HR put notice in everywhere including in lift, canteen and main lobby about the visit. They hoped to gather as many as possible people to attend the visit. Because it’s part of social works, our efforts are needed to be there to do a lot of repair works, cleaning works, caring and etc.

There was few meetings about this event as well and I was invited as part of the committee to replace my boss on arranging this event. Due to my hectic working life at Lab, I didn’t attend the meeting at all. I wished to attend but I was rushed for QA testing. And during those period, I was alone doing QA testing and have not had any internship girl to assist me. So it’s difficult position for me. However, I just registered my name to HR for participating on the Day.

The day was come and we supposed to meet at office about 9.15am. They had chartered the bus to bring us there because we also brought a lot of donation items for them, besides those tools, equipments and materials for doing repair work. Due to traffic jam and delay bus from Tampines, I arrived slightly late and worried that they will leave me. But, I did send a short message to my colleagues to wait for me if I was really late. Surprisingly, I just arrived 5 mins late from 9.15am. There were about 20 people came for the visit. I was happy to see their exciting mood for this social work.

Getting inside the bus and sitting beside my colleagues, we chatted a lot of interesting news including the news about my new internship girl who can speak very politically correct. The old folks home that we went was located somewhere near Kembangan MRT station and the name was Thian Leng Old Folks Home. After arriving the place, we all got down from the bus and helped to bring out the donated items, which were pampers, toilet tissues, body powders, toothbrushes, napkins, toothpaste, biscuits and so on. There were few boxes fully filled up with the items. I hoped it could be benefit them because they surely needed this daily items.

The place had 3 floors level and each level was occupied by different folks. First floor was main lobby, mainly for visiting, for the folks to sit relaxing while watching television. Besides, there was a kitchen in behind of the first floor for preparing their food. Second floor was occupied for female folks and they had nice pink colour wall bedrooms that suit them well. Third floor was for male occupants and they were slightly noisy with intermittent sounds coming from them.

Without many discussions, we started to get ready for the work. Basically we were divided into 4 groups of people who did different things later. The activities that we should do were:

Group A: Trim the grass and weed the garden.

Group B: Install 3 wall fans at the Home, Do repair work to the Home’s furniture, fixtures, and fittings.

Group C: Clean the beds, furniture, fixtures and fittings in all the rooms, plus the windows.

Group D: Feed the old folks and interacting with them.

I was in Group C and we were 9 people all together. Since we needed to clean two floors and it’s about 16 bedrooms. We began delicating the work between each four of us for each floor. I was with the rest to clean third floor so we took the lift and arrived there with the warm-welcome from the nurses. They had provided us the napkins with the water containing Dettol solution to clean, mop and wipe the beds, drawers, and windows. Without not much talks, we started to works. I wiped their beds and felt slightly heavy for pitying them. Their beds were pretty dirty and it seemed not changed long time ago. If I was them, I could not stay on in this environment. There were smell from the beds, the bedsheets, and the windows. I did understand that the nurses were fully occupied so they might have not had much time for these kind of cleaning. After all, I felt the folks should not be here, the children should take care of them, at least they will not feel stranded in this kind of environment.

We took about 2 hours for cleaning and our works were accompanied by the intermittent long sound from one male folk. While cleaning, I saw few of them taking a nap in their beds and some of them were attached to the long tubing in their noses. It’s really such disheartening view. But, I could not do anything except felt grateful that my grandmother was still in healthy condition and stayed with us.

A room that occupied for five old folks.

There was a photo I took from a male folk asking to be helped up to sit. He needed to take his lunch and normally their lunch were just porridge with a bowl of soup. Sighh…too plain for them. But, it might be due to their digestion and chewing issues.

Another thing that I did observe during my work was they all were tied up with a long cloth either when they were sitting or sleeping in their beds. If they were sleeping, the cloth would tie their wrists. If they were sitting in their chairs, their stomach would be tied up. I did ask the nurse why they were tied up. The reason given was the nurses worried they would fall down during their sleeping or sitting, the nurses were busy at the moment too so seldom checked on them. A view that I can’t totally forget from the day I’ll be there.

At 12 pm, we were gathering at first floor and waiting for others, especially engineering guys to finish their fixing work. I can see that all of them were seriously working and we were full of sweats. By 12.30pm, we took lunch together and sat deeply in our own thought while feeling very tired.

Later on, we continued our schedule to give out Ang Pow and biscuits to every old folk. Each person tried to participate to take his or her chance to show slightly care upon giving up the Ang Pow and biscuits. We started from the second floor till third floor. The nurses followed us and they wrote down the old folk’s name in top of the Ang Pow and biscuits’ cover. Some of them were still able to answer back and say thank you of the given gift. But, most of them, were really out of the current circumstances, they stared blankly at you and did not know what was going around them. I wanted to cry and had my tears in my eyes, but I tried to control it. It’s really sad thing for them.

Finished giving out the gifts, it’s time for us to leave and the bus came to pick us up on the exact time. We took the photo with the person managing the place and said deeply thank you for the opportunities to help them.

One important message that I learned from this visit is I wish not to leave so long till 70 plus years old. It’s sad thing when there was nobody taking care of you. This kind of place was more suitable called nursing home than old folks home since most of them were waiting for the time. Plus it’s not cheap for the monthly payable fee. It could cost from $1000 to $1500. Somehow, they really were doing nothing in there, sitting and looking at you, no much talking to each other and most of the time were sleeping in their bed. I can’t imagine this kind of life when I am growing older and I can’t imagine to place my parents there too. I will take care themselves by myself.

So, this visit is really benefit me and makes me realise on a lot of more important things in life. One of them is regard to growing old as one of four types suffering that we can’t escape. Likewise what Siddhartha saw the day before he decided to practice Buddhism.

Last week, I visited an old folks home with my schoolmates as part of our community service project. It was an eye-opening and heart-warming experience that taught me a lot about the value of life and the importance of compassion.

We arrived at the old folks home around 10 a.m. and were greeted by the staff and the elderly residents. They were very friendly and welcoming, and some of them even hugged us and thanked us for coming. We then split into groups and each group was assigned to a different activity. Some of us helped with cleaning, cooking, gardening, and laundry, while others played games, sang songs, read stories, and chatted with the seniors.

I was in the group that played games with the seniors. We brought some board games, cards, puzzles, and bingo sets. The seniors were very enthusiastic and eager to join us. They showed us their skills and strategies, and also taught us some new games that they used to play when they were young. We had a lot of fun and laughter, and I could see the joy and excitement on their faces.

One of the seniors that I played with was Mr. Lee, an 85-year-old man who had been living in the old folks home for five years. He told me that he had no family or relatives left, and that he felt lonely and depressed most of the time. He said that he appreciated our visit very much, and that it made him feel happy and alive again. He also shared with me some of his life stories, such as his childhood, his career, his marriage, his hobbies, and his dreams. He said that he had lived a full and meaningful life, but he also had some regrets and sorrows. He advised me to cherish every moment of my life, to pursue my passions, to love my family and friends, and to help others in need.

I was deeply touched by Mr. Lee's words and wisdom. He made me realize how precious life is, and how fortunate I am to have a loving family, supportive friends, good education, and many opportunities. He also inspired me to be more grateful, optimistic, respectful, and compassionate towards others, especially the elderly who are often neglected and forgotten by society.

After playing games for about an hour, we had lunch with the seniors. The food was simple but delicious, and we enjoyed eating together as a big family. We then continued with our activities until 3 p.m., when we had to say goodbye to the seniors. We gave them some gifts that we had prepared, such as flowers, cards, cookies, and photos. They were very happy and grateful for our presents, and they also gave us some souvenirs that they had made themselves, such as bookmarks, keychains, bracelets, and paintings. We hugged them and thanked them for their hospitality and kindness. They wished us all the best for our future and asked us to come back again soon.

As we left the old folks home, I felt a mix of emotions. I felt sad to leave the seniors who had become our friends in such a short time. I felt happy to have made a positive difference in their lives. I felt proud to have completed our community service project successfully. And I felt inspired to continue serving others and making the world a better place.

In conclusion, visiting the old folks home was a memorable and rewarding experience that I will never forget. It taught me many valuable lessons about life and humanity that I will apply to my own life. It also made me appreciate the elderly more and respect them for their contributions and wisdom. I hope that more people will visit old folks homes regularly and show them love and care. They deserve it.

CARING FOR THE ELDERLY- A Visit to Old Folks’ Home

On a sunny morning of 17 th March 2019, a team of members from USM IEEE Women in Engineering as well as volunteers from IEEE Student Branch had paid a visit to the Jawi Senior Leisure Home. The purpose of the visit was to provide these members and volunteers an opportunity to contribute back to the society by expressing their love to these elderly people.

The weathered faces of the elderly people lit up as we arrived at the venue in the morning with fruit baskets in our hands. Initially, the elderly seemed very shy and inward as they were not familiar with the unfamiliar faces. However, they began opening up to us as time passed by. Talking to the elderly might seem intimidating at first, however as we go further we found that we can talk to them about almost anything. They were very happy to share their interesting stories and unforgettable memories with us as they start reminiscing about the good old times. Despite being of different races, we bonded over interactive activities such as chess, game of cards and even some small talk.

Being a part of this volunteering act, we were taught compassion and understanding. By rendering service to society, we can alleviate the sufferings of people and bring transformation in their lives. Just like the old folks who might have seemed to be living life without worries but hidden behind their warm and friendly smiles are strong pining for their children. Our short presence at the old folks’ home might not make a big change, but we definitely brought joy to them in that short period of time.

The younger generation should be taught good family values especially the value and virtue of filial piety in concerning, caring for and respecting elderly through volunteering works like this.

The chef Shota Nakajima goes to bed early and wakes up early. He walks his dog for an hour and a half every day. He doesn’t drink anymore, thriving on a diet of rice with grilled fish and pickles for most of his meals, especially breakfast. Getting to this place in life, a state of peace and equilibrium, was one of the hardest parts of transitioning from his 20s to his 30s, Nakajima says, but he is happier than he has ever been — as he describes it, “You know, just chilling, cranking.”

Talking to him felt like connecting with a happier, more complete version of myself in the not-too-distant future, a light at the end of what has felt, for me, like a long and tumultuous tunnel. Recipe: Miso Roasted Salmon

An astrological concept, a Saturn return is considered a time of great upheaval — “growing older, burning out at work, increasingly higher bills, a couple of monumental life milestones,” as the astrologer Aliza Kelly has put it. According to NASA, it takes Saturn about 29.4 years to orbit the sun — or for it to return to the same spot in the sky as when you were born, signaling the end of a period of change (if you believe in astrology). As someone who is nearing the end of his return, I’ve never felt more upheaved by the colossal changes I’ve experienced from my late 20s to my early 30s, including but not limited to: new job, new apartment, new boyfriend. New life! One thing I’ve started to do that gets me a little closer to settling into this new beginning — my 30s — is eating Japanese breakfast.

The eclectic spread, called ichiju-sansai (“one soup, three dishes”), is beyond just a savory meal that soothes both soul and stomach lining first thing in the morning. These restorative breakfasts, centered on a single bowl of rice, are meant to be balanced, a careful mix of carb, protein and vegetable: say, with a perfectly steamed pot of medium-grain rice, a sliver of melting fish run through with miso, a fistful of blanched spinach draped in ground sesame seeds , a quivering onsen egg oozing yolk and, when I have the forethought, a teacup of homemade miso soup. An array of pickles pulled from the refrigerator — cucumbers, plums, radishes and whatever is in my house kimchi jar at the time — completes the meal.

The first time I traveled to Seoul, my family and I landed late at night, jetlagged, and slept on the guest-room floor of my Aunt Young’s apartment complex near Olympic Park. When we awoke the next morning, we stumbled downstairs to a dining table brimming with the most elaborate banchan, stews, fishes and pickles. I remember my aunt’s bap (“rice” or “meal” in Korean) most vividly: It was shiny, fluffy and moist, a texture I try to recreate every time I make rice for myself today. She had also made us kalbi jjim, a long-braised party dish that’s so labor-intensive you eat it only once or twice a year. As a 5-year-old, when I asked Aunt Young if I could spoon some of the rich, coveted sauce onto my rice, she said: “Of course you can. I skimmed the fat off for you.”

What does it mean to cook such an elaborate breakfast for the people you love most? It’s not just an act of service. I’ve learned recently that cooking well for yourself, or for yourself and a partner, is also a means to true happiness, a way to honor your time together by making daily life count. So listen to this: Your Japanese breakfast spread should reflect not necessarily your aspirations but your quotidian preferences, your crisper drawer at the moment, your freezer meats, your kitchen practice. I don’t always roast a fillet or brew a soup; most mornings, I can barely pour myself a cup of coffee. But when I have fish and when I have soup for dinner the night before, you can bet those leftovers will go into my Japanese breakfast.

Growing up in Japan, the chef Yuji Haraguchi remembers finding the previous evening’s meal sprinkled throughout the next morning’s breakfast, a constellation of leftovers dotting an expanse of rice. (He would later dedicate his Brooklyn restaurant Okonomi to Japanese breakfasts.) For Haraguchi’s mother, a working parent, the priority was getting three kids out the door with bellies full and future bellies fuller. That’s why she would spend most of her energy every morning cooking lunch in the form of a bento box, which often included a tamagoyaki . She would make that large folded omelet, slice it up and nestle the tender pieces into her children’s lunchboxes. The ends, which were less uniform and more scrappy-looking, would go to Haraguchi and his two sisters’ breakfasts. As Haraguchi, 43, painted this portrait of his young mother to me, I imagined my own in her early 30s, rushing my brother and me out the door toward the school bus, plastic lunchboxes in hand and sensitive stomachs filled with seaweed and rice.

Japanese people don’t call it Japanese breakfast in the way that French people don’t call it French bread. It’s just breakfast. It’s also more of an attitude, an approach to mindful cooking, than it is a recipe to follow. But should you need a starting place, miso-roasted salmon is a solid anchor for the day. With this fish, less is more: The salty, umami balm of a miso marinade is lightened with lemon zest, which lends floral bittersweetness not unlike that from yuzu. The electric juice brings tang and tenderness. As always, serve it with white rice and miso soup , then finish with a cup of hojicha in your favorite coffee mug.

If the workload overwhelms you, remember that preparing Japanese breakfast is like cooking for future you, not present you. Plant a seed or two, water them if you like, but then live your life.

Essay on A Visit to The Old Folks’ Home

Our bus stopped in front of an official-looking building with the sign “Pejabat” prominently displayed on the door. Our teacher Cik Siti got down first. We followed.

We were at the Old Folks’ Home as part of our Social Welfare Club’s activities. Cik Siti had said that it was good for us to visit the Home to get an idea of how some of the less fortunate senior citizens of our society lived. She said that most of the younger generation are too pampered and we did not know what hardship and poverty were. So the visit was supposed to be an eye-opener for the thirty or so students from our class.

Indeed it was an eye-opener. The moment I alighted from the bus I saw a group of pathetic-looking old people staring at us from an old building about twenty metres from the bus. The effect the sight on me and the others was immediate.

Normally we were like a bunch of chattering hyperactive monkeys who did not know what silence was, We were always too busy exercising our mouths or other parts of our anatomy. But that morning in the compound of the Old Folks’ Home we were all very quiet, and I understood why.

For the first time in my life, I came face to face with old neglected people. They were no different from my grandfather or grandmother from their physical appearance, but the look on their faces told a very different story.

Most of them were in no position to be physically active. So they just remained as they were when Cik Siti led us into the main building that housed the inmates. Inside the building we saw the sorry state of the residents, First of all, the whole place was untidy and a stench pervaded the air. Some old men were lying in bed, some were sitting and some were simply standing stock-still. When we entered most of them turned and stared at us, mouths agape. The rest probably were not even aware of our presence.

Cik Siti talked to a few of them. Some of them made attempts to reply, but most just stared without saying anything. The ravages of age and senility had taken their toll on many of them. They simply did not have the strength nor the interest to make conversation.

We visited the handicraft section where the more able inmates earned some pocket money by making bamboo baskets and other items. These inmates were a bit easier to talk to.

Those who were able to answer invariably told us of how they ended up in the Home in the twilight of their lives. The common cause was that nobody wanted them. Some of them had no relatives. Some cannot remember who their relatives were and some were left at the home by their very own sons who did not want to look after them! We were all taken aback by such callousness but the fact was there for us to see.

We spent about two hours at the Home. I came to realise that an old person was very much at the mercy of the young. If the old person was fortunate enough, the younger ones might take care of him. Otherwise, he was likely to end up in an Old Folks’ Home or maybe somewhere worse.

We left the Home in a sombre mood after promising to return the next weekend to tidy up the place a bit. Cik Siti was right. We were all very pampered and did not know what hardship and poverty were. Anyway, we learned something that day and the following week we did return to tidy up and make the home a better place to live in for the old people there. It was the least we could do.
