Weekly assignment sheets are a great way to help our children ( and even us ) to stay on track and organized with homeschool assignments,  daily life and activities. There are so many ways that you can use a homeschool planner, but I prefer simple, and something that doesn’t take up a lot of time to use. I really like things that I can just print off and fill in, that I don’t have to exert a lot of energy to create.

I like that there are three different sheets, which will work for younger children, older children and teens. She even shows examples of how to use these. No longer will it be a pain to keep track of homeschool attendance, grades, or hours of instruction (in fact, you may even look forward to it!). You can set your own personal goals according to your state requirements . Reporting features make viewing your overall progress towards those homeschool goals a breeze.

Homeschool Planet

Looking for a lot of the same features you could get from a universal (not homeschool-specific) online planner program? Homeschool Planet has just that and more.

No more downloading all of those ad-filled planner apps to set dates for classwork or off days. You can look through the weeks, months, and days on the program and set custom settings for holidays and other days that can be events. You can also add vacation days!

For example, let's say you wanted to add an activity like a field trip or exercise. Homeschool Planet allows you to do so through its computer-based planner program. You can also add personal tasks like chores, doctor’s appointments, and even set meal times to your homeschool calendar.

Aside from the nifty schedule features of this program, Homeschool Planet has a strong interface for classes and assignments. You're able to create a variety of classes and lessons for your child, all while keeping track of their attendance, being able to grade their work, and printing out basic educational necessities such as report cards and homeschool transcripts.

Homeschool Manager has been a favorite homeschool planner app for many over the past few years due to it's flexibility, ease of use, and weekly scheduling features.

Handy Home Planner is a subscription-based homeschool planning app that was developed by a homeschooling family.  This app is easy to navigate with a nice clean look to it, especially with its feature called Agile Views. Agile Views is a container system that allows you to drag and drop items. It’s almost like your very own digital whiteboard.

Handy Homeschool Planner may seem like a simple tool, but there are many nifty perks to it. For example, you have weekly containers that allow you to place events in them following each weekday, as well as done containers that let you move completed tasks and items to that container. If any tasks aren't complete, they are moved to the next week for your child to complete; in this way, it serves like an interactive homeschool weekly planner.

You're able to live chat with your students, an extremely helpful feature if you work out of the home. It's also a great function if you're part of a homeschooling co-op. You're able to connect and view your child's progress in this application as well as manage their progress as you see fit. 

Handy Homeschool Planner also allows you to schedule tasks and chores on their planner, as well as day to day tasks your child may need to attend, such as doctor appointments, music lessons, and other functions that fall under that category. There is a calendar aspect of this app and tracking your child's hours as they progress through their work and assignments.

Homeschool Panda offers an online homeschooling planner for you to keep track of day-to-day tasks. It offers a lesson planner, calendar, budgeting, books, and you even get the option to collaborate with other homeschooling parents to develop a plan for your child.

When you log in, you're provided with a dashboard allowing you to see your homeschool schedule for the day. The digital homeschool lesson planner lets you choose how you want to schedule your lessons, giving you flexibility and freedom with your planning.

Homeschool Panda was created by other homeschooling parents, so it’s similar to being in a community of others who understand the struggles and ups and downs of homeschooling. The social networking feature allows you to get in contact with other Homeschool Panda parents and share plans. In the community forum, you can get feedback or ask questions.

The budget feature of Homeschool Panda helps you watch and keep track of your spending in regards to your child’s homeschooling curriculum and materials. This is a feature that is readily available anytime, whether on mobile or PC. It makes shopping for resources and other materials much more manageable and helps you stick to your budget.

The “My Book” feature allows you to build your own digital library. You can scan the barcodes of books to log them into the system and keep track of your child's progress on that book. You can even add books to the lessons you create.

Homeschool Tracker

Homeschool Tracker is a flexible online tool for homeschool record keeping, planning and reporting. You can input homeschool lesson plans and scheduling assignments. Homeschool Tracker makes grading more accessible and puts everything in one place. Creating report cards and homeschool transcripts is a huge plus and beneficial when you are homeschooling older children planning to go to college. 

Students are set up with their own accounts to log in and complete assignments and check them off when they're done. You can customize the program in any way you'd like that fit your planning and homeschool recordkeeping necessities. Homeschool Tracker also allows you to work with other Homeschool Tracker users to share lesson plans and customize them to you and your child’s needs.

Setting up Homeschool Tracker may take a bit of time, which might be a downside considering that you could use that time to teach rather than set up a homeschool organizer. But, they offer video tutorials on how to navigate their program and provide video tutorials for better usage.

Homeschool Tracker has different monthly, bi-annually, and annual payment subscription plans. They don't offer a free trial, but you can pay the low price for a monthly plan, then at any time.  

An interesting thing to note about this application is that the developers take suggestions regarding the content and app itself. This is a wonderful little tidbit that makes this app stand out, as it incorporates the input of homeschooling parents and, as a result, can make the experience better for current users.

Google Classroom

While I'm not a big fan of Google Classroom , I know that a lot of other techie homeschoolers love it. Many use it as a homeschool planner app by assigning work and posting files and items for their kids to view.

It has a turn-in function so that when your child is finishing up their work, they can easily submit. It displays the deadline so that your child has no problem with keeping track of due dates. 

Google Classroom has a class stream that shows all uploads from you to your child. You can attach files to assignments, as well as videos, and links to outside sources.

Google Classroom also provides you with insights into your child's progress on their work and what they have and haven't submitted. What isn't submitted is marked as missing and will stay that way until the assignment has been turned in; then, it'll mark the work as late. Your child will be able to get an overall look at their assignments and what is expected of them through Google Classroom. 

This video gives a nice overview of how to use Google Classroom for homeschooling.

  As the designated instructor, you’re able to assign grades and percentages to each assignment that your child turns in. You can give feedback and even return work so that your child can work on it more if necessary. You'll get an email summary of your child's work and achievements as the week goes on, and you're able to post announcements if necessary.

For example, if you wanted to announce that there would be a field trip or activity of some sort, you could easily do so, and your child's class stream will update to show that announcement. You can easily add and remove assignments as necessary, making homeschool recordkeeping a breeze.

Google Classroom is accessible and relatively simple to use; it's a great ‘starter app' for homeschooling families considering moving to digital homeschool planners from books and paper.

It’s also a good app for a family who has a child who is developmentally disabled or behind his or her peers when it comes to classroom work. Some occupational therapists suggest teaching developmentally disabled children to learn Google apps as a way to help them navigate through life. If your child will be able to operate a phone or tablet, then Google apps may be able to help him in many ways as an independent or semi-independent adult. 

The only downside there may be to Google Classroom for you and your child is that there is a lack of a calendar; you can tie into a Google calendar, though. It’s not going to be a true homeschool calendar, but you can sync it with your day-to-day appointments.

Well Planned Gals Digital Homeschool Planner

My first thoughts on the Well Planned Gals Digital Homeschool Planner are, “Yay; they get it!”

They say all the right things on their website. They understand the hard work that goes into running a family. They realize that homeschooling is very much a juggling act and that when you throw in any kind of oddity, be that a working mom or a kid with special needs or a parent that works a unique schedule.

The WPG online homeschool planner allows you to manage both schooling and your busy life. That's what I love about it. It's got a super-easy setup, unlike some homeschool planning apps. There are customizable courses. There are chore charts so that you can schedule chores, homework, your to-do list, and classwork.

There are printable reports so that you can see exactly what was completed and track student progress. You can print attendance reports if you live in a state that requires stringent homeschool recordkeeping.

The calendar set up is adaptable so that each user can change to whatever he or she prefers. You can choose a Google calendar-style, or use a spreadsheet view and see your lesson plans laid out that way. You can plan assignments for up to an entire year, and then move things around as needed for events, vacations, or illnesses.

If you need to be on a strict homeschool schedule, this app will help you stay on target. If you’re on a more relaxed schedule, then this app can help you make sure that you hit the necessary benchmarks. If you’re looking for a streamlined look that reminds you of a homeschool daily planner, then you can set it up to work that way.

You can try the free version before you commit, but it's pretty basic, without curriculum schedule add ons, logins for students, calendar, checklist, and cool reports. The paid version, which is $65 per year, has all the bells and whistles, is ad-free, and is updated as WPG updates their own curriculums.

Homeschool Minder

Homeschool Minder totes itself as a “homeschool management software” (doesn't that sound techie!) This app allows you to set up lesson plans for every course you make in a straightforward way. They provide you with attendance summaries, a grade book, report cards, homeschool transcripts, and even detailed lesson plans.

If you are looking for a digital homeschool planner that can keep track of not just assignments, but of chore day as well as other things, Homeschool Minder is for you. You can log almost anything into the calendar from appointments to chores, to field trips and everything in between. You're also provided with the option to create a reading list for your child to use as well.

You can add in daily and monthly activities. If you've decided that volunteer or community service hours are needed for graduation, then you can keep track of those, too!

The grade book keeps track of all of the assignments given to your child, and scores are continuously updated so that the class average stays up to date, and you can keep track of your child's progress and grade. You can also directly scan copies of assignments right into the grade book for easy grading and access! Every essential you'd need for a course is set up beforehand so you can tell before class what you'll be doing with your child and what will be worked on.

Scholaric is an online homeschool planner designed to help homeschooling parents and students organize their educational activities, lessons, schedules, and resources.

Scholaric allows users to create and customize lesson plans for each subject or topic. You have the ability to embed links and YouTube videos into your lesson plans, or add non-school activities (like chores). You can easily create custom schedules and recurring activities (which saves you time!).

This is another option you can use if you have to track homeschool hours or want a simple gradebook. You can track hours, lessons, and attendance, and also create report cards.

This was helpful! Could you tell. E more about the notebooking page? Where did it originally come from before you uploaded it to the app?

I am using Google Classroom this year. I have a love/hate relationship with it. I love that it easily integrates with Google products like Docs and Slides. This feature alone has given my dyslexic daughter independence in her that schoolwork she has not had before. I love that Google Docs and Slides can be attached directly to the assignment so when I check their work, everything is together in one place. Using Google Classroom has also been extremely beneficial for my very unmotivated son (school only), keeping him on track and accountable. I hate that there is no way to download grades for the whole year (only assignments individually). This means I have to keep track of grades separately (spreadsheets). Even with a cheat I found to duplicate assignments faster, I hate that it still takes longer than I would like to do weekly assignments for my kids. At this point, I am using it because of the benefit to my kids, not because it is easy for me to use. Any suggestions on something similar that is easier to use?

Unfortunately, a lot of these are not available as apps on my phone through Google Play. I think only 2 of them are and if it’s not on my phone in a fun & easily accessible app, I’m not likely to use it.

A master plan for the day which includes a schedule with half hour slots, a to do list, a menu planner, and a notes section.

Weekly Planner with Menu Planner on Opposite Page

Available unlined and unlined The planner is designed to be printed double-sided with the Weekly Planner on one side and the Menu Planner on the other. The Weekly Planner should be hole-punched on the left side of the page which will leave the Menu Planner punched on the right side. When your Planner is open on your desk, the Weekly Planner page will be on the right, with the Menu Planner and Grocery List on the left.

The pages are all designed to fit in a standard 8 1/2" x 11" three ring binder. If you print the pages double-sided, your clip-off grocery list will be on the back of last week's To Do list. As you finish the week, copy any incomplete items from this week's To Do list onto the list for next week and clip your grocery list for next week off so you can start your week with all of the items you need for your menu plan. Menu Planner / To Do / Chore Chart

The combined Menu Planner / To Do / Chore Chart can help you keep track of multiple household tasks for yourself and/or children all in one place. There are two pages one for the left with columns for the day's menu, mom's to do list, and 2 child columns. The page for the right has 4 child columns.

Weekly Assignment Pages

There are three different Weekly Assignment pages, with columns for one, two, or three children. If you have two students, you may choose either the two column Weekly Assignment page, or the one column and give one to each child. I suggest filling out and keeping the master assignment sheet in mom's planner, and copying the complete assignment sheet to give to each child. By using the one column Weekly Assignment page, you allow more room in each column to detail assignments.

Using the Weekly Planner with Weekly Assignment Sheets: The Weekly Planner is designed to be hole-punched on the left side of the page, and the Weekly Assignments/Unschooling Record Keepers are designed to be hole punched on the right side of the page. When your Planner is open on your desk, the Weekly Planner page will be on the right, with the Assignments/Unschooling Record Keeper page opposite the corresponding Weekly Planner page on the left. The pages are all designed to fit in a standard 8 1/2 x 11 three ring binder.

Although the planner pages can be copied two-sided with the Weekly Planner on one side and the Assignment Sheet on the other side, the most practical way to use the planner is to print the pages single-sided , and to use the appropriate Weekly Assignment page opposite each Weekly Planner page. This allows you to add other relevant pages between each week for quick reference, while still allowing both the Planner and the Assignment pages to be seen simultaneously.

Unit Study Planner and Log

The Unit Study Planner can help you organize your resources and pull it all together. The Unit Study Planner is designed to be used as you initially plan your unit. It allows you to list all of your resources, set your goals for your unit, and begin to organize your unit.

Once you have organized a list of your resources and visited the library to finalize the books you have available, the Unit Study Log can be used to record your lesson plans. It has columns to list the activities you plan to do for the unit, including the date, the activity, the amount of time planned for the activity, and any supplies needed or notes for the activity.

Although the pages can't be reworked, you could use the printer function to force the planner pages to fit on an A5 page.

Hi there! I love the planner! Thank you so much!! It would be nice to have a sheet of weekly hour tracking. The page might have to be oriented landscape, but it would be nice to have an hour column down the side and then the 7 days of the week listed beside it so I could track what was done on what day and when. You could maybe even include a total at the bottom. That way I can track my hours for the week without having to have a page per day (like on the daily tracker page). I hope this makes sense! Hello, I just moved to New York from Texas and we had wanted to look at the home school program here. It was pretty simple in Texas to where used certain curriculums and then annotated everything on Grade Sheet. Is there anything different for New York that I would have to get certified/verified to make sure my son's graduation diploma is official?

I’m keeping track of this year’s lesson plans and completed work with a homeschool assignment binder. It’s how I was able to plan the whole year in advance and not worry if we skipped a day.

Homeschooling can be a great way not only for kids to learn, but also for parents to enjoy a different type of relationship with their children. Some would say for better or for worse – haha! While I don’t have to cajole my kids to find their shoes and homework every morning in order to get to school on time, I do have to make sure they actually do the schoolwork.

To be sure, there’s a different dynamic to parenting. I struggle to make sure that all the balls are in the air when they need to be. Sometimes it happens. Sometimes I mess up.

This year I’m trying a new strategy for record keeping and tracking my kids’ work: homeschool assignment binders. 

As I mentioned the other day in talking about homeschool planning , I’m trying to make sure that my kids know what they’re supposed to do when they’re ready to do it. There have been too many weeks when I’ve been behind and not had my older kids’ assignments ready to go when they were ready to get going on their independent work.

My past method has been to keep one homeschool binder for everyone where I store attendance sheets and weekly lesson plans as they are completed. The lesson plan I wrote each week served as the child’s to-do list for the week. I filled it out in pencil, allowing for changes; they checked things off as they completed them.

The problem arose when I wasn’t ready bright and early on Monday morning when they were.

I tried to combat that by filling out several weeks’ worth of lists at one time. That didn’t work because we might miss a day here and there and then need to shift everything. Erasing and rewriting was such a pain — and a little defeating, too. I was never ahead.

I’m trying to mend my ways through these new homeschool assignment binders. I have no idea if they will work all year long, but I’m giving it a try. After one week, I feel like they will. It is taking the kids awhile to break the habit of looking for a weekly to do sheet, but I think that will come in time as we refine this system

Regardless, let me know what you think — and if you’ve done this method or have a better method for us to try or tweak.

Here’s my new system for homeschool assignment binders:

A homeschool assignment binder for each child

I’ve set up a binder for each child with dividers for every subject. I flipped through all the curriculum and lined out the whole year in a word document. I didn’t make any fancy designed form or anything like that. Depending on the subject and the book to go with, I either wrote a columned list or chart with space for writing the date completed and a check off from me.

(I now wish that I had a written lines or something so that it was clear where to check off and where to date, but I’m not printing them all out again.)

In some cases, the curriculum came with lesson plans (like the Veritas Press Omnibus ) or I was able to purchase lesson plans or download them for free, prepared by moms who’ve gone before me. For instance, Apologia Science is pretty straight forward: read the module, do the experiments, complete the study guide, take the test. I had no qualms about buying those lesson plans . The $4 has saved me hours of work, mapping that all out myself.

(And apparently, buying in June will save you money. I didn’t pay the listed price a month ago!)

I also included any study aides, flash cards, or activities that my kids will do throughout the year. I’m guessing that this is normal for some people, but I used to make copies as needed — and then my kids were waiting for me to print things. I printed it all out now so they don’t have to wait for me. I even printed out all the tests!

In some instances, I bought the copies already made for me. Peace Hill Press sells packets of student pages so you don’t have to spend precious time photocopying. I decided that it was well worth the cost of paper, ink, and time.

Here are other things I’ve developed to help plan and track each homeschool assignment:

Laminated to-do list and weekly schedule.

I printed a weekly to-do list as well as a weekly schedule for each kid in their color. (Every kid has had his own color since the dawn of time so that I knew whose folder or assignment sheet was whose.)

My plan was this: each week the child would fill out the things to do each day. They can do this independently or with me, depending on age and ability.

However, after this first week, I’m not sure if this will work out like I thought. It seems a little tedious for them to copy what’s already in the homeschool assignment binder.

I am sure this will take us awhile to get into the habit, but I want to equip them with strategies for time management and work control as well as let them have the freedom to figure out ways that work for them.

I added a weekly schedule/time budget so that they can see at a glance all the different things that go into the week: church, sports, doctors appointments, etc. For my teens, especially, I want them to start thinking through what they will do when so that they can manage their responsibilities themselves and not have me nag them about them.

FishBoy12 laughed when I told him the time budget was for his own personal development. “Ha! Yeah, that’s not gonna happen.”

Alrighty then. Regardless, we have fun laminated sheets if it ends up working to our benefit.

New routines

So, this new system is only as good as following through on the new routines that the system supports. This is not an automatic system that runs on its own. It’s going to require that the kids and I both make it work together, resulting in good records to document good work.

My hope, particularly for my teens, is that the kids will be learning life skills such as time management, goal setting, and working independently. I anticipate this being a process over the year, but it may be harder than I think it will be. We’ll see!

Weekly routine

Each student will need to fill out his assignment sheet for the week (the laminated one so we can reuse it) and go over it with me. He’ll also need to let me know if he needs any new supplies for projects and experiments. I might need to do this for the littles; I’m not sure yet.

Like I said, though, the jury is still out on having weekly to do sheets or not.

I’ll make sure that the assignment sheets are filled out at the beginning of the week and that completed assignments are checked off at the end of each week.

Daily routine

When an assignment is completed, the student will need to date it and check it off on the lesson plan as well as file any paper work in the binder. I’ll check at the end of each day that accomplishments were recorded and that papers were filed.

This went pretty well this first week. It took discipline on the part of EVERYONE, but we pretty much did a full week of school without too many tears.

I’m really excited about the homeschool assignment binders, especially because there’s no excuse for anyone (myself included) not to know what to do!

One more question…after you spent your week planning all of your kids’ school, did you just hand them, say 6 papers, one with each subject showing what they were to do, or did you reduce that to putting what they were to do for each subject each week, and keep the weekly sheets for yourself?

They’re placed in their binders.

How do you handle scheduling and planning when you get behind? Specifically, when you (mom!) are so behind that you didn’t realize that one kid (or more!) hadn’t done any math for the last week…or two? how do you manage to correct all the kids work and still manage everything else?

I don’t manage everything all the time, so I have to cut myself slack often and just keep trying.

I can’t believe I missed this one last summer! And I’m also curious to read your update. I haven’t missed that have I?!?

We do something similar to this, only with a bit more behind-the-scenes year-long planning from me (I think?). All work is divided into two kinds: Daily & Numbered. Daily is like your sheet above (except I let the book take care of the sectioning rather than me writing it out). The kids just keep plodding through each lesson (or other reasonable amount) each day. If we miss a day, no big deal; just pick it back up the next day. “Numbered” items are subjects that are more like “weekly” lessons that come out to 30-36 weeks per year (since our “year” runs for 36 weeks). Those have the entire week to be completed (like history or science), so if we miss a day, it gets bumped a day, but it gets done that week. And if things REALLY get bad, then we can do the bare minimum (like skip SOTW activities, etc.). Or heck, bump the entire week if it’s less than 36 weeks.

I plan out what is daily vs numbered and plot it all on Excel spreadsheets that are printed off every 4 weeks (because 4 weeks fit on the page), and then we just follow the charts (which get check-marks and/or stickers with completion). It’s been working great for years now. I have my days planned enough that we get the work done, but it’s not so inflexible that any hiccups throw my Type-A personality self into a tizzy. 😉

I haven’t updated the blog yet, but we are doing this same system again this year. I’ve revised the kids’ pages so they are all chart form and easier for them to check things off, date, etc. We’re still working on how best to refine their daily to-do’s. I bought everyone a kindle, so I may make their to-do lists in Evernote. Not sure, but thinking that one through now.

How did I miss this post?? It’s so helpful! Thanks for sharing… I’ve been wondering if this would be worth the time to do. I’ve had similar troubles and woes with weekly assignment plans. Our first year homeschooling I had no idea how long each lesson would take. I often over-planned and the planning time felt like a waste. This year, our 2nd year, I have a better idea of how much to do in a day, but I think this method might be really good to try. It will also help me look closely all the way through each textbook to have a vision for the entire year. Thanks for your ideas, it will really help me figure out my plan.

The kids are not as up to speed with it as I am. I still need to go over it with them every day. I’m hoping it will become a habit for them. I love it!

I went to an assignment notebook when my oldest hit 8th grade and began taking outside classes and more activities that broke up our day, my kids car -schooled a lot that year because we live 1/2 hr from anywhere. The list by day worked very well for me so if we missed a day of that subject it was easy to stay organized by writing a new weekly sheet with everything on one page without turning back and forth or erasing all my plans as I had to do using a traditional planner. I created a weekly assignment sheet for each student and on fridays I would check their work and grade tests etc. As they worked more independently I was able to grade more frequently and we did a lot of oral quizzing and discussion. My oldest loved the sheets my youngest only refers to it occasionally , but they keep me on track because I plan the whole year at a time and we work till we’re done, taking breaks and holidays as needed. In the beginning we schooled year round, but since starting high school my girls like to see how soon they can finish their plan. Lately we have been finishing between the 1st and 3rd week of may after beginning in the last part of August with a few subjects and adding more each week. I also create my own planner with stuff shared on the blogs and pages I created for myself and take it to the copy store to print and spiral bind, I use laminated pages in it for saving paper on weekly or monthly lists and plans. I used software to do much the same thing, delegating some of the older kids work to outside teachers so it was just “Latin” instead of specific lessons. Two advantages that software brought to the process were the ability to easily calculate grades and the ability to copy and paste lesson plans from one year to the next. I used grades mainly in high school.

We used expandable file folders to keep papers organized.

The curriculum we use has the related assignment pages written on the bottom of the worksheet so my kids know what to read if I am not available to get them going. We use Saxon Math and Grammar which is self-directed when I need it to be. For other lessons, I’ll put a sticky on their book and tell them what to read/do and what to do with me.

PS We use workboxes to keep subjects and papers organized.

I have done something similar for my students over the years, with varying success. I love the idea of the time budget & having the older students fill in their own assignments on the laminated sheets! It is skill I worry about. If you go to a brick & mortar school you learn to write down your assignments early on. Printing out everything they need is a HUGE time saver, even if you just schedule to do it every 8wks, or for the whole year! I am really trying to figure out the most expedient way of getting their assignments to them, them getting the assignments done, and me checking them! Hardest part of my job!

Although, I’m assuming this would be an easier process with older kids who can all read and write. 🙂 Last year I did the block planning, but we haven’t gotten to the age of giving them their assignment sheets since 2/3rds can’t read and they all still do the majority of their subjects with me. My question is, how do you ensure that you are going to finish each subject by the end of the school year? Or, does that not matter?

I do like this format and planning each week based on what is happening w/out feeling like you are getting behind.

Yes, it’s more intensive for the non-reader, but even with the readers, I am needing to really program their brains to check the lists. Time will tell.

As for the pacing, I’ve got stickies all over the place telling us how often to do something, how many lessons/week, etc. We always finish one thing early and take longer on something else. With things like math, I’m doing two lessons if we skip a day, etc.
