தயாரிப்பு - ஹோம் மூவி மேக்கர்ஸ் இயக்கம் - ஆண்டனி பாக்யராஜ் இசை - ஜிவி பிரகாஷ்குமார், சாம் சிஎஸ் நடிப்பு - ஜெயம் ரவி, கீர்த்தி சுரேஷ், யோகிபாபு வெளியான தேதி - 16 பிப்ரவரி 2023 நேரம் - 2 மணி நேரம் 35 நிமிடம் ரேட்டிங் - 3/5 செய்யாத கொலையை செய்ததாக பொய்ப் பழி சுமத்தி தன்னை சிறையில் தள்ளியவர்களை பரோலில் வந்து நாயகன் பழி வாங்குவதுதான் படத்தின் கதை. அப்பா, மகள் சென்டிமென்ட்டுடன் எந்தத் தொய்வும் இல்லாத திரைக்கதை, சில அருமையான வசனங்கள் மூலம் தன் முதல் படத்தைக் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார் இயக்குனர் ஆண்டனி பாக்யராஜ். காஞ்சிபுரத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவர் ஜெயம் ரவி. ஆயுள் தண்டனைக் கைதியாக 14 ஆண்டுகளாக சிறையில் இருக்கிறார். கொலையே செய்யாத அவர் கொலைக் கைதி. பரோலில் தனது அப்பாவைப் பார்க்க ஊருக்குச் செல்கிறார். மனைவியை இழந்த ஜெயம் ரவி மீது அவரது 12 வயது மகள் கோபத்தில் இருக்கிறார். அப்பாவைப் பார்க்கவும் மறுக்கிறார். இதனிடையே, ஊரில் அடுத்தடுத்து சில சாதிக் கட்சித் தலைவர்கள் கொலை செய்யப்படுகிறார்கள். அந்த கொலைகளைப் பற்றிய விசாரணையை பெண் இன்ஸ்பெக்டரான கீர்த்தி சுரேஷ் நடத்த ஆரம்பிக்கிறார். பரோலில் வந்தாலும் போலீஸ் பாதுகாப்பிலேயே இருக்கும் ஜெயம் ரவி மீது கீர்த்தி சுரேஷுக்கு சந்தேகம் வருகிறது. கீர்த்தி நினைப்பது போல அந்தக் கொலைகளை ஜெயம் ரவிதான் செய்தாரா ? அவரது மகள் அவருடன் பேசினாரா, செய்யாத கொலைக்காக ஜெயம் ரவி ஏன் ஆயுள் தண்டனை அனுபவிக்கிறார் என்பதுதான் படத்தின் மீதிக் கதை.

ஒரு படத்தில் ஏதோ ஒரு சென்டிமென்ட் அழுத்தமாக சொல்லப்பட்டால் அந்தப் படம் ரசிகர்களைக் கவர்ந்துவிடும். அப்பா, சிறுமியாக இருக்கும் மகள் பற்றிய பாசக் கதை என்பது இந்தப் படத்தில் கதையின் மையமாக உள்ளது. இப்படத்தின் இயக்குனர் ஆண்டனி பாக்யராஜ் 'விஸ்வாசம்' படத்தின் எழுத்தாளர்களில் ஒருவர் என்பதால் அப்படத்தில் பார்த்த அஜித், அனைகாவின் அப்பா, மகள் பாசத்தைப் போன்றே இந்தப் படத்திலும் அப்படி ஒரு பாசத்தை வைத்திருக்கிறார். அந்த சென்டிமென்ட் இந்தப் படத்திலும் வொர்க் அவுட் ஆகியிருக்கிறது. படத்தின் ஆரம்பக் காட்சியிலேயே கதைக்குள் நேரடியாக சென்றுவிடுகிறார் இயக்குனர். ஜெயம் ரவி பரோலில் வெளிவந்ததிலிருந்து பரோல் முடிந்து மீண்டும் சிறைக்குச் செல்வது வரை அடுத்து, அடுத்து என காட்சிகளை பரபரப்புடன் நகர்த்தியதுதான் இந்தப் படத்தின் திரைக்கதையில் குறிப்பிட வேண்டிய ஒன்று. நடுத்தர வயது அப்பா கதாபாத்திரத்தில் ஜெயம் ரவி. பிளாஷ்பேக் காட்சிகளைத் தவிர படம் முழுவதும் அப்பா கதாபாத்திரம்தான் என இயக்குனர் கதை சொன்ன போது ஜெயம் ரவி கூட நடிக்கத் தயங்கியிருக்கலாம். ஆனால், அவரது அப்பாவித்தனமான முகம் இந்தப் படத்தின் திலகன் கதாபாத்திரத்திற்கு அவ்வளவு பொருத்தமாக அமைந்துள்ளது. இவ்வளவு அமைதியாக இருப்பவரா பழி வாங்குவதற்காகக் கொலைகளைச் செய்ய முடியும் என மற்றவர்களை யோசிக்க வைக்கும் ஒரு நடிப்பைத் தந்திருக்கிறார் ஜெயம் ரவி. மகள் தன்னிடம் வந்து பேச மாட்டாளா என்ற ஏக்கத்திலும், கீர்த்தியின் விசாரணையை 'டீல்' செய்யும் விதத்திலும் அவரது நடிப்பு படத்தில் அழுத்தமாய் பதிந்துள்ளது. இன்ஸ்பெக்டர் கதாபாத்திரத்தில் கீர்த்தி சுரேஷா என டீசர் வந்த போது யோசித்தவர்கள் படம் பார்த்த பின் அந்தக் கருத்தை மாற்றிக் கொள்வார்கள். அவரது ஒல்லியான தேகத்தை மீறி அக்கதாபாத்திரத்திற்குரிய மிடுக்கு, உடல் மொழி, அதட்டலான பேச்சு என நன்றாக சமாளித்து நடித்துள்ளார். தனது முக்கியமான தமிழ்ப் படக் கதாபாத்திரங்களில் இப்படத்தையும் கீர்த்தி சேர்த்துக் கொள்ளலாம். அதற்குக் காரணம் அவரது முயற்சி. யோகி பாபுவை ஒரு போலீஸ் கான்ஸ்டபிளாக ஏற்றுக் கொள்ள முடியவில்லை. இருந்தாலும் சில பல ஒன் லைன்களில் சீரியசான கதையில் ஆங்காங்கே சிரிக்கவும் வைக்கிறார். சாதி அரசியல்வாதிகளாக அழகம் பெருமாள், அஜய், அதே சாதியைச் சேர்ந்த டிஎஸ்பி ஆக சமுத்திரக்கனி ஆகியோர்தான் வில்லன்கள். தமிழ் சினிமா இதற்கு முன்பு பார்த்த அதே வில்லன் கதாபாத்திரங்கள்தான். பிளாஷ்பேக்கில் ஜெயம் ரவியைக் காதலித்து மணந்து கொள்ளும் நர்ஸ் ஆக அனுபமா பரமேஷ்வரன். வாய் பேச முடியாத, காது கேளாத ஒரு கதாபாத்திரம். மற்றுமொரு சென்டிமென்ட் கதாபாத்திரம். இவரது காதலையும், பிரிவையும் இன்னும் அழுத்தமாய் காட்டியிருக்கலாம். டக்கென வந்து சீக்கிரம் முடிந்துவிடுகிறது. ஜிவி பிரகாஷ்குமார் இசையில் பாடல்கள் சுமார் ரகமே. இன்னும் சிறப்பாக அமைத்திருக்கலாம். சாம் சிஎஸ் பின்னணி இசை அமைத்திருக்கிறார். அவரிடம் யாராவது சத்தம் என்பது மட்டுமே பின்னணி இசை அல்ல என சொல்லிப் புரிய வையுங்கள். சில இடங்களில் காது கிழிந்துவிடுமோ என்ற அளவிற்கு வாசித்துத் தள்ளியிருக்கிறார். எஸ்கே செல்வகுமார் ஒளிப்பதிவு, ரூபன் படத்தொகுப்பு இயக்குனரின் தேவையைப் புரிந்து கொண்டு செய்தது போல சரியாக உள்ளது. கொஞ்சம் பழைய பார்முலா கதை, பழைய பார்முலா வில்லன்கள் என்பது மைனஸ். ஜோடியாக இல்லாத கதாநாயகன், கதாநாயகி இந்தக் காலப் படங்களில் பார்ப்பது அபூர்வம். சில சமூகக் குறியீடுகள் படத்தில் உள்ளது. குடும்பத்துடன் பார்க்கும்படியான படம். சைரன் - ஸ்ட்ராங்காய்…

ஜெயம் படத்தின் மூலம் தமிழ் சினிமாவில் அறிமுகமானவர் ரவி. அப்படம் வெற்றி அடையவே ஜெயம் ரவி ஆனார். 1980ம் ஆண்டு செப்டம்பர் 10ம் தேதி பிறந்தவர். எடிட்டர் மோகனின் வாரிசான இவர், தொடர்ந்து எம் குமரன் சன் ஆப் மகாலட்சுமி, உனக்கும் எனக்கும், தீபாவளி, பேராண்மை, தில்லாலங்கடி உள்ளிட்ட பல்வேறு சூப்பர் ஹிட் படங்களில் நடித்து, தற்போது தமிழ் சினிமாவில் முன்னணி நடிகராக வலம் வந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறார். இயக்குநர் ஜெயம் ராஜா இவரது அண்ணன் என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது

கீர்த்தி சுரேஷ்

மலையாளத்திலிருந்து தமிழுக்கு இறக்குமதியாகியுள்ள இளம் நடிகை கீர்த்தி சுரேஷ். 1980களில் மலையாள சினிமாவில் முன்னணி நடிகையாக திகழ்ந்த மேனகா, தமிழிலும் நெற்றிக்கண் உள்ளிட்ட சில படங்களில் நடித்துள்ளார். இவரது மகள் தான் இந்த கீர்த்தி சுரேஷ். கேரள மாநிலம், திருவனந்தபுரத்தில், 1992ம் ஆண்டு அக்டோபர் 17ம் தேதி பிறந்தார் கீர்த்தி சுரேஷ். டில்லியில் பேஷன் டிசைனிங் முடித்துவிட்டு அப்படியே சினிமாவுக்கு வந்துவிட்டார். ஆரம்பகாலத்தில் தனது தந்தையின் தயாரிப்பில் உருவான சில படங்களில் குழந்தை நட்சத்திரமாக நடித்து வந்த கீர்த்தி சுரேஷ், 2013ம் ஆண்டு கீதாஞ்சலி எனும் மலையாள படத்தில் ஹீரோயினாக அறிமுகமானார். தொடர்ந்து மலையாளத்தில் சில படங்களில் நடித்தவர் அப்படியே தமிழுக்கும் வந்துவிட்டார். தமிழில் இவரது முதல் படம் இது என்ன மாயம். இப்படம் வௌிவரும் முன்பே அடுத்தப்படியாக ரஜினி முருகன், பாம்புசட்டை போன்ற படங்களில் கமிட்டாகி உள்ளார் கீர்த்தி. இதுதவிர மலையாளத்திலும், தெலுங்கிலும் சில படங்களில் நடித்து வருகிறார்.

கேரளத்து புதுவரவு அனுபமா பரமேஸ்வரன். நேரம் படத்தை இயக்கிய அல்போன்ஸ் புத்திரன், நிவினி பவுலியை வைத்து இயக்கியுள்ள பிரேமம் படத்தில் தான் அனுபமா ஹீரோயினாக அறிமுகமாகியுள்ளார். பள்ளியில் பிஏ., படித்தபடி நடிப்பையும் தொடருகிறார்.

சைரன் Review: விறுவிறுப்பும் வேகமும் ஜெயம் ரவிக்கு கைகொடுத்ததா?

ஆம்புலன்ஸ் டிரைவரான திலகன் வர்மன் (ஜெயம் ரவி) சிறையில் அடைப்பட்டு கிடக்கிறார். உடல்நிலை சரியில்லாத தந்தையைப் பார்க்க அவருக்கு பரோல் வழங்கப்படுகிறது. அவர் வெளியே வந்த நேரத்தில் தொடர்ந்து கொலைகள் நடக்க, சந்தேகப் பார்வை திலகன் பக்கம் திரும்புகிறது. இது தொடர்பான விசாரணையை தீவிரப்படுத்துகிறார் காவல் துறை அதிகாரியான நந்தினி (கீர்த்தி சுரேஷ்). இறுதியில் அந்தக் கொலைகளைச் செய்தது யார்? அதற்கான காரணம் என்ன? திலகன் சிறை சென்றது ஏன்? - இந்தக் கேள்விகளுக்கு பதில் சொல்கிறது ‘சைரன்’.

வழக்கமான பழிவாங்கும் கதையை முடிந்த அளவுக்கு எங்கேஜிங்காக கொண்டு செல்ல முயன்றியிருக்கிறார் அறிமுக இயக்குநர் ஆண்டனி பாக்யராஜ். காவல் துறையின் சைரனுக்கும், ஆம்புலன்ஸின் சைரனுக்கும் இடையிலான அதிகாரத்துக்கும், உண்மைக்குமான மோதல் கவனிக்க வைக்கிறது. தந்தை - மகள் சென்டிமென்ட், ஒன்லைன் காமெடிகள், கொலை, விசாரணை, நடுநடுவே வரும் ஃப்ளாஷ்பேக் ஹின்ட் என முதல் பாதி அயற்சியில்லாமல் கடக்கிறது. ஜெயம் ரவி - யோகிபாபு கெமிஸ்ட்ரியும், நகைச்சுவையும் படத்துக்கு பலம்.

விசாரணையை மையமிட்டு நகரும் இடைவேளைக்குப் பின்னான காட்சிகளில் வரும் ஃப்ளாஷ்பேக்கும், அதற்கான காரணமும், சம்பிரதாயமாக அணுகப்பட்டிருப்பதும், கவுரக் கொலையை பேசும் இடங்களில் அதற்கான ஆழம் இல்லாததும் மைனஸ். “சாதி இல்லன்னு ஒருத்தன் சொன்னா அவன் எந்த சாதினு தேட்றதவிடுங்க”, “நான் ஜெயில்ல இருக்குறது தான் என் பொண்ணுக்கு சந்தோஷம்னா அவளுக்காக நான் அதையும் பண்ணுவேன்” போன்ற வசனங்கள் கவனம் பெறுகிறது.

தொடக்கத்தில் இருந்த சென்டிமென்ட் இரண்டாம் பாதியில் மிஸ்ஸிங். ஆங்காங்கே சில புள்ளிகளை வைத்து அதனை ஒவ்வொன்றாக இணைத்து நடத்தும் விசாரணைக் காட்சிகள், திரைக்கதைக்கு அச்சாணி.

.உண்மையில் உருகும் தந்தையாக உருக்கமான உணர்ச்சிகளை வெளிப்படுத்தும் பெப்பர் சால்ட் தோற்றத்திலும், துள்ளலான ஆம்புலன்ஸ் ட்ரைவராக இளமையான தோற்றத்திலும் அலட்டல் இல்லாத நடிப்பால் ஈர்க்கிறார் ஜெயம் ரவி. அப்பாவித்தனமாக யோகிபாபுவிடம் பேசும் காட்சிகள், மகளின் அன்புக்காக தவிக்கும் காட்சிகளில் அட்டகாசமான நடிப்பு.

கீர்த்தி சுரேஷ் போலீஸ் கதாபாத்திரத்துக்கு பொருந்த போராடுகிறார். காட்சிக்கு காட்சி வரும் தேவையற்ற கோபமும், ரகட்டாக காட்டிக்கொள்ள மேற்கொண்ட முயற்சிகளும் பெரிய அளவில் பலனளிக்கவில்லை. அவர் முழு நடிப்பை கொடுத்தபோதும், கதாபாத்திர வடிவமைப்பின் பலவீனத்தால் பெரிய தாக்கம் கொடுக்கவில்லை.

அனுபமா பரமேஸ்வரன் சிறிய காட்சிகள் வந்தாலும் கவனம் பெறுகிறார். யோகிபாபுவின் டைமிங் காமெடிகள் படத்தை தாங்குகின்றன. சமுத்திரகனி கொடுக்கப்பட்டதை மிகையில்லாமல் செய்திருக்கிறார். மகளாக நடித்திருக்கும் யுவினா பார்த்தவியின் குறையில்லாத நடிப்பு கதாபாத்திரத்தின் அடர்த்தியை கூட்டுகிறது.

ஜீ.வி.பிரகாஷின் இசையில் பாடல்கள் நினைவில் நிற்காமல் நழுவ, சாம்.சி.எஸின் பின்னணி இசை விறுவிறுப்பு கூட்டுகின்றது. கதைக்கு தேவையான பங்களிப்பை செலுத்தும் செல்வகுமார் எஸ்.கேவின் ஒளிப்பதிவில் திருவிழா காட்சியும், ஆம்புலன்ஸ் சண்டைக்காட்சியும் ஸ்பெஷல் மென்ஷனுக்கு தகுதி வாய்ந்தவை.

முதல் பாதி சம்பவங்களின் நடுவே ஃப்ளாஷ்பேக்கை கச்சிதமாக பொருத்தியது, விறுவிறுப்பை கூட்டி, கதையை சுவாரஸ்யமாக சொல்லியிருக்கும் ரூபனின் ‘கட்ஸ்’ படத்தை எடிட்டிங் டேபிளில் கூடுதல் மெருகூட்டியிருக்கின்றன. நிறைய காட்சிகள் மேலோட்டமாகவும், அழுத்தமில்லாமல் சொல்லப்பட்டிருந்தபோதும், காமெடி, காதல், சென்டிமென்ட், சண்டை என வெகுஜன சினிமாவுக்கான அம்சங்களுடன் உருவாகியிருக்கும் படம் ‘சைரன்’ ஒலியுடன் ஆம்புலன்ஸின் வேகத்தில் போரடிக்காமல் கடந்துவிடுகிறது.

Vijay Antony, whose early films, like as Naan and Salim, received high praise for their content, progressively veered toward full-fledged commercial pictures with a healthy serving of bravery and emotions. The most recent entry on the list is Thimiru Pudichavan’s movie, which, like a couple of his other recent productions, is a typical good vs. evil conflict filled with plenty of sentiment and valor.

Sub-inspector Murugavel (Vijay), from Virudhunagar, is upset that his younger brother is choosing the incorrect course of action. The younger brother flees to Chennai since he is fed up with his elder brother’s incessant advise. After two years, Murugavel is transferred to Chennai and learns that his brother works with Padma (Sai Deena), a goon who recruits children to do crimes. Due to an unexpected incident, he kills his brother and swears to transform the town’s residents’ fear of Padma. Enter female sub-inspector Madonna (Nivetha Pethuraj), who accompanies Murugavel and a few other law enforcement officers to capture Padma and release the children who are imprisoned by him.

In Thimiru Pudichavan, a fearsome criminal and a smart cop play a typical game of cat and mouse. Like every other cop, Murugavel offers advice to everyone around him, develops feelings for the protagonist, works to alter the law, and brutally beats up criminals. Although Vijay Antony, Nivetha, and Sai Deena all give respectable performances, the movie suffers from a poor narrative, mediocre production standards, and over-the-top stunt sequences.

The movie strains one’s patience with too many logical fallacies, but it does include a few interesting moments in the second half and a message for children. A lame hero with insomnia wears a wristwatch that shows his blood pressure, which determines how he behaves. A stronger storyline without odd histrionics and over-the-top action sequences would have improved the viewing experience. However, it is a relief that there aren’t any pointless duet songs or obnoxious humor tracks.

Ushiran is a film that has all the elements of a perfect action film. It has mind-blowing stunts, superbly choreographed fight sequences, and breathtaking visuals. The film is shot in beautiful locations, and the background score is mesmerizing. The chemistry between the lead pair is fantastic, and their love story is heart-warming.

The film also has a message for the audience. It talks about the importance of fighting for what is right and standing up against injustice. Ushiram is a character who believes in the law and fights for truth, even if it puts his life at risk. His dedication to his work and his love for Anbarasi are what makes him a hero, and the audience will root for him throughout the film.

Asuran Movie Review: A moderately rewarding film, but Vetri Maaran has done better

Despite provocation, a man resists taking to violence — to the point that even his loved ones begin feeling annoyed about his meekness. He prefers pleading oppressors for mercy to taking up arms. And then, when he realises peace doesn’t stand a chance, you get a rousing interval fight sequence in which he unleashes the full power of his rage. This is followed by a flashback that shows why he is the way he is. No, I’m not talking about Baasha. I’m talking about Asuran . But these broad structural similarities aside, both films are worlds apart. It’s still fascinating to see how Vetri Maaran looks to be discussing the sort of issues you’d expect to see in a Pa Ranjith film, but in a way that the people — not the politics — take centrestage. The story of  Asuran, an adaptation of Poomani's award-winning novel Vekkai ,   is so rooted (Tirunelveli) and real, it’s quite fascinating to observe how he manages to sneak in the hero-beating-up-evil-men idea not once but thrice. On the evidence of Asuran , I don’t think this ungainly marriage is yielding terrific results yet.

In Asuran , as in Vada Chennai , though the setting is rife with social problems, the focus is more on people than on their ideologies. For instance, there’s a communist character who means well, but the film’s trying to shade the character, not try and sell you communism. Asuran , for all the social issues in it, is a personal film first, with a protagonist who trades off exercising his inner asuran  — going by conventional definitions of the term — in return for familial security.

Among Vetri Maaran’s recurrent themes is loyalty to a teacher figure and consequent betrayal from either party. We have seen this in Polladhavan , Aadukalam , Vada Chennai , and now, in the flashback sequence of Asuran as well. Vetri Maaran’s heroes are usually those whose lives spiral out of control from a single event. Asuran is more of the Visaaranai mould. This isn’t about a man whose life is irrevocably altered by a single event. This is about the effects of a system that thrives in oppression. It’s set in a time, at a place, where people are dehumanised, almost literally, given how the oppressors talk of murder as ‘ vettai ’. When Sivasamy (Dhanush) and his son are being pursued by murderous men, they do so armed with dogs. At one point, they are examining footprints, almost like they are out to hunt an animal. While on animals, a dog is shown to die quite early in the film, and it’s impossible not to think of Pariyerum Perumal , especially when you notice how little remorse the responsible parties show. While Asuran may not be able to match Pariyerum Perumal ’s singleminded focus on caste conflict, it does do a great job in establishing the reality of the setting. The vast empty lands, the fields that serve as cover, the rocky hills that provide an eagle’s eye view, the thick forest… Nature is a mute observer of the unspeakable evil thriving in these lands. In a poignant scene, Sivasamy’s son reminisces a beautiful time he had had at a location, observing how the place remained the same while his life had not.

In Asuran ’s setting — as in parts of our country — something as innocuous and straightforward as walking in footwear is enough to incur the wrath of the oppressors. It’s a recurring idea in this film. Right at the beginning, Sivasamy recognises a person simply by the sound the slippers make on the ground. In another scene, his younger son suffers from not wearing them. Sivasamy’s older son beating up someone with his footwear is a pivotal moment in the story. Even in Sivasamy’s flashback, he gifts footwear to a girl he likes, and things spiral down from there. All these incidents lend so much heft to that scene when Sivasamy’s younger son, towards the end, asks for slippers, and despite being in such a tearing hurry, Sivasamy stops to do this. But moments like this work better in your head — like when the younger son is asked to deal with the loss of one pet by focusing on another, and he incisively asks if they would do the same should either of their children were to pass away. It’s an eerie scene that talks of the losses suffered by the oppressed, and how time, while comforting, also tends to make people forgetful of the hurt inflicted by the oppressors. But as I said, these scenes feel better after the film experience, as you dwell on them.

Like Vada Chennai , Asuran too talks about land grabbing, and how important it is for the powerful to gather property of the powerless. Much like in that film, the narrator steps in occasionally to make things clearer. Like when he helpfully explains that Chidambaram (Sivasamy’s younger son) has come to understand his father better. I’m not at all sure the help was necessary. Also, like in Vada Chennai , there’s a fleeting recommendation that only education can truly help the oppressed rise. After a film with graphic fight sequences that are underscored by heroic music, the education advice does ring a tad cursory here. That, however, is not to take away from the imaginative choreography of the violence in this film that leaves you squirming. A man trying to reattach his chopped arm, dogs and flies feasting on a body, sickles sinking into human flesh, a boy beaten up bloody, a close-up of a woman’s face with first degree burns… (How did this film NOT get an adult certificate?) While the slow-mo shots do get a tad indulgent, the stunt choreography is quite wonderful in this film. Take that pre-interval fight block, for instance. It’s one man versus many, but look at the slugging, the dirt, the adrenaline, all the tentative footwork, the survival instincts of everyone concerned… I also liked that Sivasamy’s violence is reluctant for the most part. In a film as mindful of such details, it’s a big disappointment that the lip sync is often a problem. Many main actors mouth something, but the dialogue is something else. It’s an astonishingly fundamental problem in the film.

I totally bought Dhanush as the older character. He really sells the frailty of age and the rage of a protective parent. I bought it that he puts familial safety over personal humiliation. In the words of Sivasamy’s older son, “ Aakka dhaan neram aagum. Azhikka aagaadhu. ” Sivasamy understands this and steers clear of the damaging effects of pride. It’s a different sort of pride, after all — of caste — that is at the centre of so much suffering.

My most favourite aspect of this film is those small moments of great depth that nobody makes a big deal about. Like when Sivasamy, after the loss of a closed one, suddenly realises that he doesn’t have a photo of them, and expresses dejection that their face will likely get forgotten. Like when Sivasamy’s wife (the excellent Manju Warrier) goes through the different stages of grief. Like when Sivasamy quietly indicates that the police generally take the side of the powerful. These are all quietly done, but let it also be said that such understated profundity here isn’t quite as powerful as, say, in a Visaaranai . In another person’s filmography, Asuran would be a reasonable achievement, but in Vetri Maaran’s, it is not. This is less an insult to this film and more a compliment to his career.

Asuran Movie Review

Another crime thriller film under the successful Vetri Maaran and Dhanush combo and another good entertainer is what we are bestowed with. This is the fourth time the combo has joined hands together and they have delivered yet again. Film maker Vetri Maaran is one of his kind in Tamil cinema who roots his characters deeply rather than weaving a plot around the centric character of the film. The director has yet again registered his signature in the recent release Asuran. With Vetri Maaran being the captain of the ship, actor Dhanush has always displayed his acting prowess and Asuran stays in that course as well.

Siva Saami (Dhanush) is a farmer who hails from an underprivileged caste in a village. Siva Saami has a violent history as a teenager and chooses to leave behind his violent life to take care of his family. Now as a father his life revolves around his family which consists of three children and his wife Pachaiyamma ( Manju Warrier ). He owns a piece of farming land and is happy with the source of income that it provides. But Narashiman (Aadukalam Naren) a rich and powerful man who belongs to the upper caste family hailing from a nearby village conspires to snatch the piece of land that Siva Saami holds so that he can set up a cement factory.

The tension between the two families keeps escalating gradually over time. Things go down south when Siva Saami’s elder son Velmurugan (Teejay Arunasalam) humiliates Narashiman on one occasion. Siva Saami is busy with finding a bride for his son Velmurugan. Meanwhile, raged for revenge Narashiman has Velmurugan brutally killed to even the scores. Though saddened by the way things escalated, Siva Saami attempts to save the rest of his family through antiviolence approach. But Pachaiyamma finds it difficult to move on from the loss of her son and suffers miserably in pain. Unable to witness his mother suffer Siva Saami’s enraged younger son Chidambaram (Ken Karunas) hacks Narashiman to death. Now the family members of Narashiman are after Chidambaram and the entire family. With having no other choice left Siva Saami is forced to walk down the violent path that he gave up at one point of his life to safeguard his family. Did Siva Saami manage to save his family from the blood seeking crooks, if so how did he do it, is what makes the rest of the film.

Asuran is not just a revenge saga, on its running time towards the end it lays light on caste discrimination, social injustice, and power politics. Though the film may not go down the lane of director Vetri Maaran’s collection of best piece of art works, it sure has the trademark of him indisputably. Even if the one liner of the plot is a done to death template in Tamil cinema, story teller Vetri Maaran’s treatment has made it a compelling watch. The first half of the flick was runny and rock solid but it was in the second half where the film lagged behind due to the flashback portion which might have been penned more cautiously.

Actor Dhanush K Raja is overtly the show stealer with his stellar performance. Siva Saami is simply one of the career best performances of the actor. Malayalam actress Manju Warrier could not have asked for a better role to make her debut in Tamil cinema. The actress has landed in a meaty role and has done justice to the purpose of being on board. Debutants Ken Karunas and Teejay Arunasalam have surprisingly put on a commendable show with ease. The rest of the cast has also delivered elevating performances which have added great strength to the crime drama.

On the technical end, musician G. V. Prakash Kumar has pushed the dreadful drama in to a gruesome one with his unnerving background score which is further supplemented by the frames of cinematographer Velraj. Editor R. Ramar has diligently trimmed the thriller drama which helps in keeping up the speedy run.

Vetri Maaran has done justice to the adaptation of the novel Vekkai, work of popular writer Poomani. Director Vetri Maaran builds up the tension in the first half with a survival drama theme where the plot moves from the perspective of an ordinary man opting to deal injustice in a nonviolence approach. It also makes the audience root for the character. Later in the second half where the inevitable mass hero moment arrives the commercial escalation takes a slight upper hand which spoils the essence of the core plot. Other than that the film is a good entertainer with solid characterization and a gripping screenplay.

On the whole, Vetri Maaran and Dhanush bags gold yet again in their reunion Asuran which turns out to be a solid sociopolitical crime thriller.
