Maths worksheets and challenges for design and technology
Worksheets and challenges to support the teaching of maths content in design and technology.
Skills worksheets for secondary design and technology
Quality Assured Collection Category: Design and technology Publisher: Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)
These skills worksheets explore a range of topics linked to design and technology. Each worksheet includes a variety of tasks with examples and answers. They work well as a classroom resource, homework task and revision resource.
Maths worksheets for D&T
Quality Assured Collection Category: Design and technology Publisher:
This collection of resources provides ideas and activities to engage students in the maths content included in GCSE Design and Technology. The resources could be used in secondary or GCSE lessons, depending on the students' abilities. All resources provided by Helen Dunn ( @MrsD_Helen ) , Parkside School.
Deployable structures
Quality Assured Collection Category: STEM Clubs Publisher: Royal Academy of Engineering
These resources link ideas from mathematics to applications in real world engineering. The resources cover the broad topic of deployable structures which are structures that open up (deploy) into something of use. An obvious example would be an umbrella. There are also case studies of two engineers involved with two different types of deployable structures.
Emergency Shelter
Quality Assured Category: Design and technology Publisher: Nuffield Foundation
This Nuffield task is to design an emergency shelter, using a 4m x 3m rectangular piece of tent material, to protect three people from wind and rain. The key processes developed include: Representing - recognising where mathematics can help with the design of the shelter, for example: choosing, interpreting data, measuring and using scale drawing. Analysing - finding reliable measurements to create an appropriate product, considering different possible arrangements and working accurately. Interpreting and evaluating - considering the data, selecting appropriate data to help develop a design to meet criteria and justifying chosen design. Communicating and reflecting - producing a clear design with appropriate measurements and explanatory commentary, consideration is given to rejected designs.
Maths challenges linked to the construction industry
Quality Assured Collection Category: Mathematics Publisher: Construction Youth Trust
This collection of resources provide maths challenges for students, set in the context of construction.
Design and Technology Teaching Resources (Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4)
Our free key stage 3 and key stage 4 teaching resources for design and technology have been created to lead students through different processes with the help of real-life situations from the INEOS TEAM UK’s challenge for the America’s Cup, the Formula 1 of international sailing.
The purpose of design and technology programmes for students is to use their imagination and creativity to understand and make products that can solve real and relevant problems across many different contexts. Covering a broad range of topics and disciplines including science, mathematics, engineering and art, design and technology at key stage 3 and 4 will teach pupils how to be innovative, resourceful and capable citizens.
England’s national curriculum aims to ensure that pupils develop creative, technical and practical expertise to use in everyday life, as well as building up knowledge and understanding of skills in order to make prototypes and products for different uses. The subject also teaches pupils to be critical and to evaluate their ideas, as well as understanding the principles of nutrition and cooking.
Free worksheets, lesson ideas and other resources for teachers
STEM Crew offer multiple free teaching resources to make design and technology engaging for both students and teachers, with videos and worksheets that will challenge, encourage and teach pupils.
Our D&T Contextual Challenge has been produced to give students the opportunity to practice a contextual challenge task ahead of their GCSE NEA using the real-life example of the British America’s Cup Team. Covering three sections; Explore, Create and Evaluate, this resource explains the iterative design process before going through each section and starting again to refine designs to make them fit for purpose.
Another great resource is Materials and their uses , which covers the different objects and materials used in the construction of boats and why they are used. This is highly effective used in sequence with our other resources or as a quick learning activity.
Each resource provides a main video which will introduce the topics, the context and the challenge or learning. It will also include a number of worksheets for students to explore the different design and technology challenges these real-life experiences pose, encouraging them to explore, create and evaluate.
Explore all of our design and technology resources here.
If you would like to access these free resources, simply register and provide your organisation. You will then be able to login to watch the videos and download the worksheets for your class to use.
Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any further questions about STEM Crew, our design and technology resources, or any of our other resources.

Printable Engineering and Technology Homework Passes | STEAM Classroom Forms

Description
Are you looking for homework passes to match your Engineering and Technology classroom? Then this set of Engineering + Tech-themed Homework Passes is perfect! These passes can be used in many ways:
- At the beginning of the school year, hand out a certain amount for the year/semester that students can use when needed while also teaching them self-discipline and budgeting .
- You can use them throughout the year as incentives or rewards for positive behavior, doing well on an assignment, etc.
- These passes are great as prizes that can be given out after classroom games, thrown into random prize baskets, and more!
This resource comes in 3 different tech + engineering-themed background designs :
- Watercolor clipart
- A greyscale version of the watercolor to help keep details visible and easy to print!
Pick your favorite, print, and cut!
Helpful tips:
- When printing, if you want to maximize the margin space (depending on your printer) when the printer window opens, go to page setup -> paper size -> manage custom sizes -> and set all the margins to zero . When complete, go back to the main window and choose the print setting to "Actual Size" or "Custom Scale" to around 97%.
- Depending on how you choose to use them, these passes work great for one-time use or lamination .
- While the watercolor design looks best in color, the grayscale version prints wonderfully as well.
