1. Davidson Fellows

The Davidson Institute annually organizes its Fellows program, dedicated to identifying and supporting young minds in engineering. Successful teams in this competition can receive prizes reaching up to $50,000, providing crucial support for future research or academic endeavors. Participants must form teams of no more than 2 students and present work that matches or closely approaches a college graduate level in terms of depth, subject understanding, and presentation quality. An ideal entry, for instance, involved the groundbreaking creation of the world’s inaugural ultra-low-cost, mind-controlled prosthetic arm, which is over 1500 times more cost-effective. 2. USA Biolympiad (USABO)

For Biology enthusiasts, the USA Biolympiad offers a compelling challenge, attracting over 10,000 participants annually. Engaging in activities and quizzes across diverse topics, participants progress through two timed online exam rounds. The top 20 finalists undergo advanced training at Marymount University, with four finalists representing the USA at the International Biology Olympiad in Kazakhstan. Eligibility : Open to all US high school students.

Application Deadline : November 10, 2022 (school registration).

Competition Dates : February 1- Online Open Exam (OE), April 4- Semifinal Exam, May 24- National Finals Begin, July 7 to 14- International Biology Olympiad (Astana, Kazakhstan).

Cost : No cost for students if the school registers for USABO 2024. National exam transportation is the student’s responsibility. Students must pay country visa costs for the country that the IBO will be held in. Room and board are available for both in-person exams. Financial aid is available.

Prizes : Medals, awards.

Location : Virtual for open exams and semi-finals. National finals are in person at a host university. The International Biology Olympiad is in Astana, Kazakhstan, July 7–14, 2024.

3. Doodle for Google

Doodle for Google is an art contest where you have the chance to design a Google logo based on an annual theme . Using any art material, submit your doodle and a write-up explaining its significance . The theme for 2023 was “Express Your Gratitude Through Imagination. Entries are judged on creativity, originality, and theme communication at the State and National levels. This competition is competitive, as thousands of applicants send entries each year. US states and territories will vote for their favorite entries to determine 5 national finalists. A Panel of employees from Google will select 1 national winner out of the 5 finalists. 4. Harvard Pre-Collegiate Economics Challenge (HPEC)

Annually, teams of 1–4 high school students globally can participate in the Harvard Pre-Collegiate Economics Challenge (HPEC). This prestigious competition includes individual and team rounds on AP Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, economic news, history, research, and applications in fields like education and the environment . Besides aiding AP Economics exam preparation, participants can network, attend presentations, and interact with professors and economists. 5. The Blue Ocean Competition

As one of the most significant virtual pitch competitions for high school students exploring entrepreneurship, the Blue Ocean Competition has attracted more than 2293 participants from 135 countries. Upon registration, participants engage with mentors and peers globally, benefiting from feedback, mentorship, and support through Q&A and brainstorming sessions. Eligibility: High school students aged between 14 to 18 years at the time or at registration, including international students.

Application Deadline: 18 February 2024

Prizes: Cash prizes of $1000, $750, and $500 respectively for the top three winners, and an additional $750 for a people’s choice award winner. Certificates for participants, and awards for participating schools.

6. Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

This contest welcomes entries in diverse genres, from critical essays to short stories, advancing from regional to national levels . Local organizations host regional competitions, and winners progress to the national stage. Students in grades 7 through 12 in the U.S. can participate. Judging criteria include assessing skill, originality, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision to determine whether an entry receives an Award. Eligibility: Student in grades 7–12, age 13 years or older as of the date of entry, and residing in the United States, U.S. territories or military bases, or Canada.

Application Deadline: Deadlines vary by region and can be as early as December 1, 2023, until January 2024.

Prizes: Honorable Mentions, Silver or Gold Keys, or American Visions and Voices Medals at the regional level. National award winners attend the ceremony at Carnegie Hall, with sponsored monetary rewards and scholarship opportunities varying by genre and sponsor.

Cost: Entry fees of $10 per individual entry or $30 for a portfolio, with waivers available for eligible applicants.

7. The Plant the Moon Challenge (PTMC)

In this unique challenge, teams conduct a global science experiment using a soil simulant to explore crop growth in lunar or Martian conditions . Along with the 5kg bag of soil simulant, teams receive a pH meter, ten KN95 masks, ten pots, and access to the PTMC guide. Teams can consist of up to 10 students, emphasizing the scientific method and design process. Following a 10-week period, teams submit project reports, contributing to research on sustainable food sources for space missions. All participants are invited to a virtual symposium with NASA scientists.

Eligibility: High school students from all over the world can participate.

Application Deadline: December 19, 2023 (international registration closes), January 14, 2024 (normal registration closes)

Prizes: Best in Show Awards

Cost: Team registration fee of $405 covering up to 10 students and one kit. The cost of any supplemental materials used by teams is not covered.

8. American Computer Science League (ACSL)

ACSL, in its 46th continuous year, organizes computer programming and science contests for K-12 institutions globally. In the last season, around 8,000 students from the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia engaged in regular competitions. The season comprises four online contests , evaluating fundamental computer science concepts. Eligibility: Elementary, middle, or high school students can apply. Please ensure your school has registered for the competition.

9. United Nations World Wildlife Day Youth Art Contest

The UN World Wildlife Day Art Contest is a prestigious global competition for high school students who have a passion for wildlife conservation. Participants are encouraged to focus on a species that has thrived due to collaborative efforts. Artwork may explore the contributions of local leaders, scientists, governments, or communities dedicated to conserving biodiversity. Submissions, created with markers, crayons, colored pencils, and/or paint, are welcomed.

Eligibility: High school students from all over the world

Submission Deadline: To be announced for 2024

Prizes: The winning entry will be presented at the World Wildlife Day Event on March 3rd, 2023

10. Engineer Girl Annual Essay Contest

EngineerGirl’s annual contest focuses on engineering’s impact. The 2024 Writing Contest prompts students to explore the lifecycle of an object used daily . Entries, up to 1,200 words, can adopt first or third-person perspectives, emphasizing at least three engineering disciplines . Winners will be announced in the summer. Eligibility: Elementary, middle school, and high school students can register.

Submission Deadline: February 1, 2024

Prizes: For each age group, first-place winners will be awarded $1,000, second-place entries will be awarded $750, and third-place entries will be awarded $500

11. American Academy of Neurology’s (AAN) Neuroscience Research Prize

The AAN Neuroscience Research Prize encourages high school students to explore neuroscience through research , recognizing scientific talent and potential contributions to the field. Entries undergo two rounds of review by a panel of neuroscience professionals. The application includes an abstract (300 words max), research report, bibliography, and confirmation from a parent/guardian, teacher, and mentor . Here’s a breakdown of everything you need to know about this research prize.

Eligibility: Students must be enrolled in secondary school (grades 9–12) in the United States, regardless of age.

Prizes: Winner s will receive a $1,000 prize, a certificate of recognition, and the opportunity to present their work during a scientific poster session at AAN’s 76th Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado.

Cost: Each winner and their parent or mentor will receive coach airfare, two nights hotel, $100 per diem for expenses (up to two days), and complimentary meeting registration.

12. ChemiCo

ChemiCo is an international Olympiad-style Chemistry competition. Covering subjects like stoichiometry calculations, reactions, the periodic table, atomic structure, chemical bonding, and experimental chemistry, the competition spans languages such as English, Russian, French, Portuguese, and Romanian . Eligibility: Students from 7–12 grade, regardless of age.

13. Patricia Grodd Poetry Prize for Young Writers

The Patricia Grodd Poetry Prize by The Kenyon Review is a prestigious competition for high school sophomores and juniors worldwide. Named after former editor Patricia Grodd, it provides a platform for emerging poets to showcase their talent and gain recognition from a renowned literary magazine. The contest offers valuable support and serves as a launching pad for young writers to pursue their creative aspirations in literature .

Eligibility: Must be high school sophomores and juniors.

Submission Deadline: November 30, 2023.

Prizes: Winning and runners-up poems will be published in The Kenyon Review , and the winner will receive a full scholarship to the Kenyon Review Young Writers workshop.

14. World Historian Student Essay Competition

The World Historian Student Essay Competition is open internationally to students in grades K–12 from public, private, and parochial schools, as well as those in home-study programs. Each participant must submit a 1000-word essay on one of the provided topics, delving into its personal significance and its connection to world history. Papers will be judged on a clear thesis, well-supported with specific examples, critical thinking, effective organization, and the student’s ability to convey a personal connection and transformative experience with the study of world history. Eligibility: Students from kindergarten to grade 12 can participate.

Submission Deadline: May 1, 2024

Prizes: $500 prize to winners in addition to a one-year membership in the WHA.

Location: Virtual. Submissions can be via email or post.

15. American Mathematics Competition (AMC): 10/12

AMC stands as one of the largest and most prestigious math competitions globally, attracting over 300,000 students each year. The AMC 10 and AMC 12 are 25-question, 75-minute multiple-choice exams in high school mathematics, aimed at fostering problem-solving skills . The AMC 10 is for students in 10th grade and below, covering the high school curriculum up to the 10th grade . The AMC 12 includes the entire high school curriculum, excluding calculus . Eligibility: Students in grade 10 or below and under 17.5 years old on the contest day can participate in AMC 10. students in grade 12 or below, under 19.5 years old can participate in AMC 12.

Additionally, you can also work on independent research in AI, through Veritas AI's Fellowship Program!

Veritas AI focuses on providing high school students who are passionate about the field of AI a suitable environment to explore their interests. The programs include collaborative learning, project development, and 1-on-1 mentorship.  

These programs are designed and run by Harvard graduate students and alumni and you can expect a great, fulfilling educational experience. Students are expected to have a basic understanding of Python or are recommended to complete the AI scholars program before pursuing the fellowship. 

The   AI Fellowship  program will have students pursue their own independent AI research project. Students work on their own individual research projects over a period of 12-15 weeks and can opt to combine AI with any other field of interest. In the past, students have worked on research papers in the field of AI & medicine, AI & finance, AI & environmental science, AI & education, and more! You can find examples of previous projects   here .

Eligibility : Ambitious high school students located anywhere in the world. AI Fellowship applicants should either have completed the AI Scholars program or exhibit past experience with AI concepts or Python.

Application Requirements: Online application form, answers to a few questions pertaining to the students background & coding experience, math courses, and areas of interest. 

If you are interested in doing university-level research to pair with your competitive experience, consider applying to the Lumiere Research Scholar Program , a selective online high school program for students that I founded with researchers at Harvard and Oxford. Last year, we had over 4000 students apply for 500 spots in the program! You can find the application form here.

Stephen is one of the founders of Lumiere and a Harvard College graduate. He founded Lumiere as a Ph.D. student at Harvard Business School. Lumiere is a selective research program where students work 1–1 with a research mentor to develop an independent research paper.

The Office of Undergraduate Research will host its 5 th annual   5-Minute Fast Track Research Presentation Competition  this fall. The 5-Minute Fast Track is an academic competition that cultivates students’ presentation and research communication skills, and challenges them to describe their research within five minutes. This is a terrific opportunity for UK’s undergraduate students to learn these critical communication skills and represent the diversity of scholarly work at UK.

WIN  (first place) will receive  $750

PLACE  (second place) will receive  $500

Competition Details

** ONLY 20 STUDENT REGISTRATIONS AVAILABLE **

The competition will include a  preliminary round  on October 18, 2023  with the Top 10 students from the preliminary round advancing to the  Final Championship Round  on  October 26, 2023.

Undergraduate student competitors will present their research in five minutes, using only one static slide, in front of a panel of faculty judges and audience. The goal of this competition is to improve students’ abilities to communicate their undergraduate research effectively to a general audience while creating a compelling story about their scholarly work.

Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2023  - 5MT Fast Track Competition -  Preliminary Round    5:00 - 8:00 PM; Healthy Kentucky Research Building (HKRB) Atrium - live student presentations with Q&A from judges. 

** TOP 10 student finalists from the Preliminary Round will advance to the Final Round ** Students will be notified via email after the Preliminary Round is completed. 

Thursday, Oct. 26, 2023  - 5MT Fast Track Competition -  Final Championship Round;  5 PM - 7:30 PM; Healthy Kentucky Research Building (HKRB) Atrium.  The TOP 10 finalists will present live in front of a panel of judges.  The event will be live-streamed and recorded by UK Event Productions.   Presentations will be recorded by UK Event Production team.

Eligibility

University of Kentucky undergraduates who have completed  two full terms  of faculty-mentored research in any major are eligible to compete.

Participants must have a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior enrollment status

Participants MUST BE available to participate in the preliminary rounds AND the Championship Final Round

Judging Criteria

  • Only 1 single static PowerPoint slide is permitted. No slide transitions, animations or "movement" of any description. The slide is to be presented from the beginning of the oration.
  • No additional electronic media, sound, or video files are permitted
  • No additional props - costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment - are permitted
  • Presentations are limited to 5 minutes maximum. Competitors exceeding 5 minutes will be disqualified.
  • Presentations are to be spoken word - no poems, rap, or songs
  • Presentations are to commence from the front of the WT Young Auditorium
  • Presentations are considered to have commenced when a presenter starts their presentation through movement or speech
  • The decision of the adjudicating panel is final. The Top 10 presenters from the preliminary round will advance to the final championship round

COMPREHENSION

  • Did the presentation provide an understanding of the background to the research question being addressed and its significance?
  • Did the presentation clearly describe the key results of the research including conclusions and outcomes?
  • Did the presentation follow a clear and logical sequence?

ENGAGEMENT & COMMUNICATION STYLE

  • Did the oration make the audience want to know more?
  • Was the presenter careful not to trivialize or generalize their research?
  • Did the presenter convey enthusiasm for their research?
  • Did the presenter capture and maintain their audience's attention?
  • Was the research topic, key results and research significance and outcomes communicated in language appropriate for a non-specialist audience?

  • What: An international public speaking competition bringing together students aged 16 to 20 from more than 50 countries around the world
  • When: Registration closes in February each year; the final will be held in May

The International Public Speaking Competition is at the heart of the English-Speaking Union’s mission, bringing together oracy, cultural exchange and a hefty dose of friendly rivalry.

The competition brings the best young speakers from all over the world to London for a week of cultural exchange and public speaking contests. Established in 1980, it now reaches over one million young people in more than 50 countries across the globe, showcasing the highest standard of public speaking, while giving delegates an opportunity to meet and engage with other young people of different backgrounds and nationalities.

Finalists (national winners of the English-Speaking Union’s or other public speaking competitions in their country) must write and deliver a speech connected with the theme for the year’s competition. Past themes have included ‘Culture is not a luxury but a necessity’ and ‘The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they have none’.

How to Give a Great Online Presentation: 11 Pro Tips

Giving a presentation online is much more difficult than presenting in front of a live audience.

People get distracted easily. You can’t read the room. Often, you can’t even see your audience.

Because of this, it’s hard to engage and captivate your participants.

Hard, indeed. But not impossible.

I put together these 11 tips that will help you turn your online presentation from good to great.

And don’t just take my word for it.

Among these tips, you’ll also find the wisdom of  Nathan Gold , high-stakes presentation coach, and seasoned keynote speaker, and Gibson Biddle , former VP of Product at Netflix, now a teacher, speaker, and workshop host.

Ready to take your online presentation to the next level?

#1. Cut the number of your slides and simplify them

Don’t overwhelm your online audience with too many slides or they may easily zone out. In case you have more material, consider splitting the presentation into two sessions.

Also, make your slides minimalistic. One idea, one quote, or one number per slide is ideal. This will make the information more digestible and draw attention to what you’re saying instead of forcing people to read.

#2. Use the rule of three

A good structure helps people follow your story and understand your presented content better. Gibson Biddle recommends following the rule of three because:

  • 3 items are easy to remember
  • They help you minimize your text
  • 3 chapters provide guideposts for the content of your presentation

The rule of three will help you hold the message of your talk together nicely.

Apply it in the design of your slides (3 bullet points a slide), or use it to structure your whole presentation (three main takeaways).

#3. Fail to rehearse at your own peril

Improvisation has a certain appeal, for sure. But don’t leave your online presentation to a chance. Take your time and rehearse your talk well. Otherwise, your online gig might come across as unprofessional and messy.

I usually give as much as one hour of rehearsal time for every minute of my talk before any large presentation that I give.

Nathan Gold goes even beyond that. In this webinar, he says that whenever he trains TED and TEDx speakers, he asks them to commit to around two hours of out-loud practice for every minute of their talk.

Of course, the length and intensity of your preparation is entirely up to you. What’s important is that you’re confident about how you’re prepared. At least, though, run through your slides and content about an hour before your talk and rehearse your opening well so that you start strong.

#4. Start with a strong hook

Speaking of starting strong. Captivate your audience right from the start of your presentation. Open your talk with a powerful statement, story, thought-provoking question, or an eye-opening number.

Another great practice is to actively involve your audience in your talk right from the beginning. Let the tech aid you there.

In his webinar on how to captivate an online audience, Nathan Gold kicked things off with an interactive word cloud : Using one word, describe how you feel about presenting online.

This way, he learned something more about his audience and was able to address their concerns throughout his presentation.

To make it more impactful, he repeated the same word cloud at the end of his webinar to see how his participants’ feelings changed after his presentation. The result was remarkable. Watch it here at 31:30 .

#5. Quiz your audience

A quiz is another brilliant way to start (or finish) your online presentation. Running a quiz is fun for your participants and allows you to connect and “talk” with your audience even if you can’t see them.

Prepare a short, four to six-question quiz on the topic of your presentation and let your participants guess away. You can even motivate your audience to participate by giving away some small treats for the winners.

Tools such as Slido allow you to create your online quiz in a couple of minutes and run it during your online speech, webinar, or workshop.

#6. Use a backdrop or a virtual background

Even if the situation forces you to give your presentation from your home, avoid letting your audience peek into your kitchen or living room. You will appear much more professional against a plain wall or a special backdrop that you can install easily in your room.

If your video conferencing tool allows you to set up a virtual background (such as Zoom ), choose one that’s pleasing but not disturbing for your audience to look at.

#7. Position your web camera at eye-level

Even if you can’t always see your audience, that doesn’t mean you can’t be looking them in the eyes.

Nathan Gold advises moving your laptop/phone camera up so it’s approximately your eye level. This way, it will appear as if you’re looking right at your audience which feels much more natural.

You can also play around with tripods and stands to achieve the most comfortable position for you. For example, Nathan has his web camera mounted on a tripod in front of his computer screen which allows him to look at his slides while still being glued to the camera.

#8. Prepare secret notes

Here’s another great hack from Nathan Gold that will help you keep an eye-contact with your online audience.

If you want to keep notes to remind you about some important things you want to mention during your presentation, write them down on sticky notes and stick them behind your camera, close enough for you to read through them comfortably.

This way, your audience won’t even notice that you’re glancing at your notes (as opposed to looking down when reading from your notebook).

#9. Keep engaging with your participants

Throughout your presentation, space out several interaction points that will bring your attendees back in case they tuned out. Take inspiration from Gibson Biddle who likes to break the dynamic of his webinars and workshops by asking his audience questions through live polls .

Live polls offer you a great chance to open a conversation with your audience, get their instant feedback on your presented material, and collect their opinions.

Since people tend to lose attention when attending a presentation online, re-engaging them throughout your talk is even more important. When I present online, I space out live polls every about 5-7 minutes, as opposed to every 7-10 minutes in the live setting.

Another great way to interact with your audience is to let them ask you questions. Collect your participants’ questions using Slido Q&A and then answer their questions at the end of your online presentation.

#10. Have a wrap-up slide to summarize your points

By the end of your presentation, conclude your talk by summing up all the important messages and key lessons on a separate slide. You’ll draw the full circle and your audience will get a nice overview of what they learned.

Or, end your presentation with a call to action or a tangible next step for your audience to do. Encourage your participants to try practices that you shared, provide actionable steps they should follow, and share ways for them to keep in touch with you.

#11. Ask for feedback

Feedback is the best gift your attendees can give you in return for the learnings that you shared throughout your talk. Without it, you don’t know what your audience liked or disliked. In other words, you can’t improve.

Create a simple feedback survey and ask your participants to fill it out at the end of your talk.

Make it easy for your audience to participate in the survey. For example, during his webinar, Gibson had a QR code displayed on the screen and described in detail how the participants should scan the code and take the survey.

The feedback form can be really simple – three questions will do.

Try something like:

  • On a scale of 1-10, how did you like this presentation? (Rating)
  • What is the one thing that you liked about today’s talk? (Open text)
  • What’s the one thing that could have been better? (Open text)

If you want a presentation game that requires your listeners to talk more than you, 20 Questions is the one to play! A classic and simple activity, this game immediately boosts engagement and gets people laughing. 

Here's how to play: Have someone put an appropriate image or word on the screen behind you (this can be an audience member you trust or a colleague or co-presenter).   • Tell people to raise a hand if they think the statement is correct and sit down if they think it's incorrect.
  • Continue until one person is left standing.
  • Award the winner. 

This activity can be as short and challenging as you want. Also, if your presentation is long, you can play multiple rounds to break up your speaking time and test your audience throughout your discussion.

  • Before your event, create a list of "yes or no" questions. 
  • Once you're ready to play, tell your group to stand up (if you're doing a virtual presentation, make sure everyone's video is on). 
  • Ask each question one by one. 
  • Tell attendees to stand if their answer is "yes" and sit if their answer is "no." 

The questions can relate to your topic or be totally random. Also, if you'd prefer to thin out the number of people standing, you can take a creative twist and ask your questions by saying something like this: "Stay standing if (insert scenario)." When phrasing each question this way, the game will end with one person standing. To acknowledge the winner, you can give them a round of applause or award them a prize. 

13. Conference Opener Icebreaker 

If you're speaking at a big conference, you need an interactive game for presentations that can get everyone involved and ensure every voice is heard. To achieve these goals, you should create an icebreaker game that works for large groups .

Student Presentation Competition - IEEE SoutheastCon 2024

SoutheastCon 2024 Student Presentation Registration

The SoutheastCon 2024 Presentation Competition encourages students to present ongoing research, capstone projects, personal projects or any topic of your choice. This competition places emphasis on the participants’ effectiveness in communicating scientific ideas to an audience. This competition is totally separate from the Eta Kappa Nu (HKN) paper presentation competition.

The research presented in this presentation competition will NOT be published in IEEE Xplore and you are at liberty to choose a topic of interest for presentation. If you already have an existing paper in EDAS for review then you are not allowed to use the same topic/content for this presentation competition but you can use a slight modification of your EDAS submitted work.

The presentation competition will have two categories:  graduate  and  undergraduate presentations . Each category will have three awards: First, Second, and Third.

NOTE: to be eligible for participation in this competition you must submit the abstract using the link provided (TBD at this point). Your abstract  should not have been used in EDAS  and  should only have ONE student author  (NO additional co-authors are allowed). 

Also note that the  one-page abstract will NOT be published anywhere .

Your abstract should  not be longer than one page  and written using the IEEE  template . Please submit your abstract using the Google Form.

Students will be required to provide a  5-minute presentation  of their work at the conference during an assigned time slot. All presentations will be carried out in person at the venue.

The deadline to submit the one-page abstract is  January 31st, 2024 at 11:59PM Eastern US time .

Abstracts are invited from faculty, research scholars and students from colleges and universities across the country. The abstracts will be screened and shortlisted. Applicants whose abstracts have been short listed will be invited to present their work through Google Meet. The best project in each discipline will be awarded prizes

Guidelines for the Conference and Paper Presentation Competition

  • The programme consists of subject-wise invited talks associated with paper presentation in each subject. The Paper Presentation will be conducted in two categories viz. a)Faculty & Research Scholars b)UG &PG Students (Including those who completed the course in 2021) in various disciplines of Arts, Science, Commerce & Management
  • Cash prize for first and second positions will be given to Student Category only for the Paper Presentation Competition
  • Registration fee for the Faculty and Research Scholars is Rs. 500 and for students is Rs.100. (Fee remittance details are given in the brochure)
  • All Participants will have to upload abstracts of the original research (maximum 500 words) in the Google form during registration (Reviews are not accepted)
  • The last date for registration is 21 February 2022
  • All participants will be awarded with a certificate approved by the DCDC, MG University
  • Any number of entries can be submitted from a single institution, in different areas 8.After preliminary screening, the selected paper presenters will be notified personally through e-mail by 28 February 2022. The shortlisted candidate will have to pay the registration fees by 5 March 2022
  • The full paper of the selected abstracts and power point presentation should be emailed to the concerned departments before 5 March 2022
  • The final online presentation will be held on 10 March 2022 through Google Meet.
  • The time allotted for the presentation will be 8 minutes, and 2 minutes for discussion
  • The participants should be prepared to present the paper online using slides
