If I could be of service in saving souls in any part of the world, I would willingly do all in my power”, said Nano Nagle, the Foundress of the Presentation Sisters hailing from a noble family of Ireland and who is today known as The Greatest Irish Woman of all Time.

Following in the Spirit and the Charism of Nano Nagle, The Presentation Sisters came from Ireland to be of service to the people of India. The first Sisters came to India in 1842 and set up their first foundation in George Town.

From here they moved to various parts of the city and thus it was that on July 2nd at the request of Most Rev.J.Aelen, Arch Bishop of Madras, the Presentation Sisters in Vepery Convent agreed to take over the St. Anthony’s Primary School in Egmore, which was languishing in the parish of St. Anthony’s, Pudupet. It was threatened with closure by the educational authority. This school catered to the poor specially the Anglo –Indian children of the locality.

The strength of the school at that time was just 75. And Mother Teresa Coyn with Sr. Xavier Moran, Sr. M. Cecilia Clarke and Sr. Bridget Brown took charge of the little school.

The Presentation Sisters work in five continents and in India their presence is spread from Kashmir to Kanyakumari working in schools, hospitals, villages and slums.

Today St.Anthony’s school has around 900 children, both boys and girls from lower income group. Our vision is the all round development of the individual child with great sense of discipline and commitment to hard work together with moral values. Through our education we impart to our children and parents the values of Jesus Christ, and Nano our foundress. We give importance to values like love, peace, mercy, justice and non – violence together with relationships and love for Mother Earth.

Our faculty consists of a well qualified staff who with their talents, experience, hard work and dedication teach the students not only the prescribed subjects but also help them to take responsibility for their actions through critical thinking. W. B. Yeats says: “Education is not filling up a pail, but lighting a fire.” And that is what we do in St. Anthony’s. We enkindle a fire in them and that make them go far in life. We are proud to say that St. Anthony’s boys and girls are found in every corner of the world with great achievements to their credit

Our history.

Presentation Convent Hr. Sec. School, Srinagar has a history of 84 glorious years in the field of education. We look back with a sense of gratitude and satisfaction at the enormous contribution this institution has made in the lives of all those who have passed through the portals of their Alma Mater. We now invite you to take a journey down the memory lane as we retrace our steps, to the journey which began in Ireland.

Presentation Convent Higher Secondary School is a selective K-12 independent day school for girls in Rajbagh, on the banks of Jhelum River, Srinagar. It was started in 1936 and run by the Presentation Sisters.

On 15 June 1939 the school building was officially inaugurated at Rajbagh.

The school was devastated by a fire on 12 January 1965 that completely destroyed the school building and part of the sisters’ residence. The clock tower survived. The school was rebuilt.

In its initial days the school was boarding and had a separate building for a boys' school. The school was co-educational until 1977.

The Nagle Block was inaugurated in 2009 and was put open for classes 11th & 12th in 2010.

Jubilee Block was started in 2011 to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of the school.

Mission Statement and ethos

As a Presentation School, our vision is to promote the growth of our school community – children, parents, staff and management in a Christian, Catholic/Presentation atmosphere, so that all of us may achieve our full potential as children of God and live as responsible members of society in our world

On 29th June 1829, the Presentation Sisters first came to the Parish of Castlecomer. This was the year of Catholic Emancipation and Catholics were now free to practice their religion. Catholic children could attend schools. Three Sisters from the Presentation Convent Kilkenny volunteered to set up the school in Castlecomer. These were Mother Lewis Aylward, Mother Angela Feehan and Sr. Catherine Aylward. At first, the nuns lived in a four-bedroomed thatched cottage. The nuns taught their first pupils in the sacristy attached to the parish chapel. This was situated in the churchyard and it later became The Boys’ School. For over fifty years the nuns had much to suffer from lack of accommodation. In 1879, Mr Charles Wandesford gave an old hospital in Kilkenny Street to the nuns. Part of today's school is built on the site of that hospital. In 1885 St. Mary's school was built and the remaining school buildings in 1898. In 1937, a Secondary Top under the Primary School Board was begun. In 1959, an application was made to the Department of Education for a new Primary School. After a year or two, permission was granted. The site was a vegetable garden, purchased by the nuns in 1936. The old Primary School was used as a Secondary School until Minister Mary O’Rourke officially opened the new Community School on 23rd October 1990. In the 1960s, many developments happened, e.g., the FREE EDUCATION SCHEME began in 1967, hence, student numbers increased. Also, CO - EDUCATION began. The Secondary Top ceased in 1968 and became a Secondary School. In 1996 the B.O.M. submitted a request to the trustees to extend the play area for the school. This request was sanctioned. A grant was obtained from the Department of Education and in 2000 a new playground was opened. Until 2011, the school had a Presentation sister as principal. Sr Nuala Horan retired that year. Margaret Maxwell became the school’s first lay principal and was then succeeded by the current principal, Mary Jacob. She keeps Nano Nagle’s lantern burning bright by leading the school community in the Presentation ethos.  

Uniform information

The school uniform is a blue jumper, light blue shirt, navy tie, and navy trousers for boys, navy skirt/ pinafore for girls. The children wear a navy school tracksuit on P.E. and Drama days. Remember to label all items clearly with your child’s name.

Healthy lunch promotion

Our school has a healthy lunch policy. We have two breaks during the day, to allow children to eat and top up their energy! Sandwiches, crackers and rolls, with fruit, yoghurt and/or cheese are good, healthy suggestions. Children bring water, juice or milk. Fizzy drinks, chocolate bars, crisps and sweets are not part of a healthy lunch. Don’t forget to label your lunchbox and drink bottle!

Parents’ Council

Our school has an active and very supportive council and it meets regularly. Seán Harnett is the current chairperson and Paula Renwick is secretary. Shirley Dowd is Treasurer. New parents are always encouraged to join.

Board of Management

A new Board is elected every four years. The current Board meets every six weeks and is involved in the overall management of school life. The Chairperson of our Board is Mr Pat Parle. Parent representatives on the Board are _Gerard Comerford and Martina Grincell. while the community representatives are Catriona Normoyle, David O’Rourke and Fr. Ian Doyle. Michelle O’Sullivan and Mary Jacob are the teacher representatives.

Admission Procedure

The management comprises an educational society of sisters of Presentation belonging to the congregation of the daughters of Presentation of Mary in the Temple.

The congregation was founded by two young catholic women, Francisca Butti and Maria Rossi, on an Easter Sunday, in the year 1883 in Italy. The desire to promote humanitarianism not only among their counterparts but also among the upcoming generation inspired and enabled them to get their names and work go down the pages of history. The scope of their consecrated life in the institute was to strive for personal sanctification and live in communion with one desire – to sacrifice themselves for the glory of God and service of the Kingdom (F.C). They undertook PASTORAL CARE OF EDUCATION i.e. welcoming, forming, educating, and instructing as their vocation.

Education according to them was a contended path to lead humans to salvation. Hence the ultimate goal of their educational commitment was the salvation of self and others. As consecrated educators, they cherished the values of humility, simplicity and availability in an attitude of ‘Be- hold’ and formed themselves to be educators who are caretakers or mothers generating life in the spirit of ‘Accipe’. Accipe is to accept and educate the child as a gift from God through a unique educational style that is ‘The Formation of the hearts’ so that every person through a deeper understanding may choose and experience God and be in communion with Him. In this context, their educational project was oriented towards the integral liberation of a person. This inspiration paved the way for the birth of religious institutions catering for their needs to promote the moral, intellectual, emotional and spiritual integration of the child.

Our past history reveals the unflinching commitment of the educators who have worked with determination for the formation of the youth entrusted to them. Their availability and generous service in absolute dedication is the identity of Presentation. The noblest part of our mission is not just to teach but educate. With this objective in view, the sisters of Presentation offer their services in many schools all over the country especially in Kerala, Gujarat, Karnataka, Punjab, and Andhra Pradesh.

The Presentation offers the service of value-based education to the young hearts. The school motto ” In thy light, we see light ” bears ample testimony to the secular as well as the spiritual goals of this catholic institution and the vision of the founder sisters. As our Founders took care of the young ones as though they had been introduced to them by Jesus Christ Himself, each educator is entitled to carry out our mission with absolute dedication: ‘Take this child nurse him for me and I will give you reward’! The greatness and importance of our mission are founded on this certainty.
