Library Movement and Nationalism at Bellary

The Library Movement in South India was closely tied to the growth of a national consciousness, of which there are several examples from the Bellary district of Karnataka. The “Bellary Club Reading Room” (1863) and the “Debating Club and Reading Room” (1889) at Bellary stated their objectives to not only include the reading of newspapers and debating their contents, but also working towards the improvement of public and political matters in the nation. Similarly, the “Sanmarga Samaj Reading Room” and “Bellary Rate Players’ Association Reading Room,” both started in 1886, organized fortnightly lectures on a range of topics, ranging from religious to political. Newspapers such as Andhra Kesari and The Hindu were available in these reading rooms which, encouraged the growth of a nationalist sentiment and an aversion to the British government. From the 1880s, more reading rooms emerged, as the nationalist consciousness grew rapidly with the establishment of political organisations like the Indian National Congress. The Swadeshi and Vandemataram movements gave further impetus to reading rooms in Bellary. By the mid-20th century, the Swadeshi spirit and message of nationalism began to be disseminated from these rooms.
